Audrey McCracken (00:00):
Hello and
welcome back to Grace for My
Home.
I'm Audrey McCracken, and whata blessing it is to be back with
you again this week.
I hope and pray that you'redoing well, you and your family.
Today I wanted to read to youthe story of Zacharias and his
wife Elizabeth.
And you may have you may knowthis story, but today I just
(00:24):
want to share a few things withyou, a few a few encouraging
things from this story.
And so let's start in Lukechapter one, starting in verse
five.
It says, In the days of Herod,King of Judea, there was a
priest named Zacharias, of thedivision of Abigail, and he had
a wife from the daughters ofAaron, and her name was
(00:46):
Elizabeth.
They were both righteous in thesight of God, walking
blamelessly in all thecommandments and requirements of
the Lord.
But they had no child, becauseElizabeth was barren, and they
were both advanced in years.
Now it happened that while hewas performing the priestly
service before God in theappointed order of his division,
(01:09):
according to the custom of thepriestly office, he was chosen
by Lot to enter the temple ofthe Lord and burn incense.
And the whole multitude of thepeople were in prayer outside at
the hour of the incenseoffering.
And an angel of the Lordappeared to him standing at the
(01:29):
right of the altar of incense.
Zacharias was troubled when hesaw the angel, and fear gripped
him.
But the angel said to him, Donot be afraid, Zacharias, for
your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will
bear you a son, and you willgive him the name John.
You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his
(01:52):
birth, for he will be great inthe sight of the Lord, and he
will drink no wine, and he willbe filled with the Holy Spirit
while yet in his mother's womb.
And he will turn many of thesons of Israel back to the Lord
their God, and it is he who willgo as a forerunner before him
in the spirit and power ofElijah, to turn the hearts of
(02:16):
the fathers back to thechildren, and the disobedient to
the attitude of the righteous,so as to make ready a people
prepared for the Lord.
So here is this priest and hiswife, who are well advanced in
years.
He's drawn by lot to offerincense in the temple.
(02:38):
And as he's doing this, anangel appears before him and
tells him something quitespectacular.
And I love the way that theangel says in verse 13, Do not
be afraid, Zacharias, for yourpetition has been heard, and
your wife Elizabeth will bearyou a son, and you will give him
the name John.
(02:59):
So the angel was saying, TheLord has heard your prayer, he's
heard your cry, and he hasanswered your prayer for a son,
for a child.
And Zacharias is, he's tryingto figure this out.
And we know from the context ofthe passage that this was
obviously a prayer that he hadprayed, but it was not a prayer
(03:22):
he had prayed that morning.
Because it goes on to say thathe was troubled by this, and he
told the angel, How can this be?
Because my wife is past those, the year of ch the years of
childbearing.
How can this be?
So this is a prayer that he hasobviously prayed many times.
(03:43):
And here God is sending anangel from heaven to say, I have
heard your prayer and I amanswering your prayer.
And Zacharias is not, he's not,he's confused.
And I just think this is such awonderful illustration of how
(04:03):
God does things in his own wayand in his own timing.
You know, we have things thatwe greatly desire, and we pray
for those things and we hope forthose things.
And sometimes those things donot happen the way we want them
to happen or when we want themto happen.
(04:23):
And we may even give up onthose prayers and just decide it
it wasn't God.
You know, this wasn't theLord's will for my life.
And we move on.
But God hasn't, and God hasn'tforgotten those prayers.
And we can tell from thispassage that Zacharias did not
pray that prayer that morning.
(04:44):
That was not something he'dprayed that morning or that that
week or even that month, or oreven that year, or perhaps even
that decade.
That was a prayer that he hadput in God's hands and forgotten
about, or just tucked away andsaid, Well, you know, it it
didn't happen.
But God didn't forget.
(05:06):
God still remembered, and inthe right timing, God answers
that prayer.
And he doesn't just answer thatprayer, but he answers that
prayer in spectacular fashionbecause he says, Not only are
you gonna have a son, but yourson is gonna be the forerunner
of the Messiah, of the promisedone.
(05:27):
And he is gonna prepare thehearts of the people to receive
my son.
He is going to bring peopleback to me.
He's gonna prepare their heartsto believe.
You know, last week I spokeabout belief and how we must
trust God.
We must believe that God givesus an opportunity to believe.
(05:51):
And that's that's so importantin the kingdom.
It's so important in thekingdom that we believe.
It's important to God, andthat's how we receive the things
that God has prepared for us iswe believe that He has He has
given us these preciouspromises.
And so by believing them, webecome partakers in them and we
(06:12):
walk in them.
But usually before we believe, there's a lot of groundwork that
has to happen in our lives andin our hearts.
And often God uses the thingsin our lives, some are good and
some are not so good, to prepareour hearts to receive his word.
You know, there were years thatI wasn't serving God, but he
(06:36):
was still working in my heart.
You know, I turned from God andI decided I'm just not sure
about that.
I'm not sure if I believeanymore, but he still believed
in me.
And I wasn't, you know, I therewas there was a time when I
gave up on God, but he did notgive up on me.
And even through those times,he had his hand on me and he was
(06:58):
preparing my heart for what heultimately called me to do.
And he was preparing my heartto believe.
And I love this story ofZacharias and Elizabeth because
it shows that just because wehave given up, just because we
think, well, God didn't answerthat prayer, doesn't necessarily
mean that he didn't.
(07:19):
Sometimes it's just not the waywe thought it would be or we
wanted it to be.
And often it takes longer thanwe think it should or we want it
to.
But he answered that prayer inspectacular fashion, and he had
a bigger plan.
He had something much biggerthan Zacharias had in mind.
(07:40):
And so God sends his angel tosay, I have heard your prayer
and I am answering your prayer.
Isn't that beautiful?
Isn't that beautiful how God'splans are better than our plans,
his ways are higher than ourways, and he cares about the
things that that touch ourhearts.
(08:01):
And I love also the way it saysthat Zacharias and Elizabeth,
they were godly people.
They obeyed to the best oftheir ability under the old
covenant.
They were faithful and theybelieved God.
And just because God didn'tanswer their prayers didn't mean
(08:25):
that they didn't continue tolove and serve him and be
faithful to him.
You know, they didn't turnbitter and turn away.
They continued to obey, eventhough God did not do the things
for them that they asked for.
They continued to be obedient, they continued to believe.
They didn't just serve Godbecause God gave them what they
(08:48):
wanted or because God answeredtheir prayers in the way that
they wanted him to.
They decided that they weregoing to be obedient and
faithful even when things didnot go the way they wanted them
to.
And in this culture, and inmany cultures today, having
children was very significant.
(09:10):
It was looked upon even as acurse to not have children
because that was seen as theblessing of the Lord to have
children.
And so to not have children, there was there could even have
been speculation of well, whydon't they have children?
You know, what's wrong withthem?
And and it doesn't spexplicitly say that in the text,
(09:31):
but in their day in thatculture, that's not too far
fetched, but they remainedfaithful.
But in verses twenty four andtwenty-five, it says, After
these days Elizabeth, his wife, became pregnant, and she kept
herself in seclusion for fivemonths, saying, This is the way
(09:51):
the Lord has dealt with me inthe days when he looked with
favor upon me to take away mydisgrace among men.
So it was considered a disgracenot to be able to bear
children, and God, when you whenshe least expected it, took
away that disgrace and thatshame.
(10:13):
And God told Zechariah in verse14, he said, You will have joy
and gladness, and many willrejoice at his birth, for he
will be great in the sight ofthe Lord.
And he even told him he willhave the spirit of Elijah, he
will be anointed to do what Ihave prepared for him to do.
(10:37):
You know, and I love the waythat it says that he will be
great in the sight of the Lord.
And that's what's important,not that we're great in the
sight of man, but that we'regreat in the sight of the Lord.
And even before they found outthat this child was coming,
Elizabeth and Zacharias wasgreat in the sight of the Lord
(10:57):
because they put their trust inhim, because they were faithful
to him, even when it seemed thatperhaps God had not been
faithful in answering theirprayers.
You know, God has great plansfor us, he loves us, but he also
has a master plan, and heweaves us into that master plan.
(11:18):
God has a plan for you, and hecares about you.
He cares about me, but we are apart of his master plan, and he
wants to show us our place inthat beautiful plan that he is
weaving.
You know, he does not wasteanything.
(11:39):
There are no wasted years withhim.
Perhaps there are things inyour life that you always
thought God wanted you to do,but as the years have gone by,
it seems that those things havefallen to the wayside or they
those dreams have died.
But I want to challenge youthis week to pray that the Lord
(12:01):
would bring back to life thosedreams, those desires that He
placed in your heart, and thatnow, even when maybe it seems
like you're too old, maybe itseems like that time is gone,
that God would breathe freshbreath over all of those dreams
that are from him, and that theywould spring back into life,
(12:22):
and that there would be a newhope and a new joy in your heart
as he birthed something new inyou this week.
You know, there are many thingsthat in the last few years God
has done in my life that I I Iwasn't expecting it.
You know, I thought that thesethings are over, this time is
(12:46):
over, but God said, No, I'mdoing a new thing.
And, you know, he delights indoing unexpected, he delights in
bringing unexpected blessingsat unexpected seasons and
unexpected times.
You know, he loves to do thingsin wonderful fashion, you know,
(13:07):
where we would just take asmall blessing.
Sometimes he'll withhold thesmall blessing because he has
something bigger in mind.
And that's the kind of God weserve.
He's awesome, he has a masterplan, but sometimes it seems
like he does things spontaneous, but usually it's just because
we don't know the master plan, you know, and he cares about us.
(13:30):
And he he cares about all ofus.
And he will use us to preparethe way for others.
He will use us to plant seedsthat will later grow and bring
forth fruit, but he will alsouse the hard things, the things
(13:51):
that we wish were different, toprepare our hearts, to get us
ready for the things he has forour lives.
You know, nothing is wasted.
Nothing is wasted, even thehard times, even the hard days,
even the unanswered prayers.
They're not prayed in vainbecause God uses those things to
(14:12):
prepare us for greater things.
He loves you so much.
He loves us so much, and he isa good father.
And I want you to put yourtrust in him this week.
And before I let you go, I wantto tell you about something
special that's coming up.
I'm going to host anothercovered in prayer event, but
(14:32):
this time I'm going to open itup to all women, not just moms,
because during the summer whenwe held our first, there were a
lot of women who reached out tome and said, I'm not a mom, but
I'd like something like this.
And so this time I want to openit up to all women.
No matter your age, no matter, you know, if you have kids or
(14:52):
not, we would love to pray withyou.
And I would love to meet you.
So we're going to have our nextcovered in prayer event for all
women on Saturday, November15th at a Wake and Coffee Bar
from 5 to 7 p.m.
And that's in Mollin, SouthCarolina.
It's going to be a sweet timeof fellowship, a time to slow
(15:13):
down, to connect, to praytogether.
If you came to the last one, then you know how powerful it
was.
And if you missed it, I'd lovefor you to come to this one.
Bring a friend, come and joinus, and I think it will bless
your heart.
I think you will be encouraged.
I don't have the link and andand the registration set up yet,
but I will by next week thistime.
(15:34):
But I just want to go ahead andput that in your ear so you
could hold the date if it'ssomething you'd like to
participate in.
And I'll have more informationon that next week.
But I hope and pray that youhave a great week.
I hope that this word has beenencouraging to you.
And I just want to pray for youbefore we go.
Father, I thank you for myfriends.
I thank you that you hold thewhole world in your hand.
(15:56):
God, we're just such a smallpart of the plan that you have.
But I thank you that we are apart and that we're important to
you.
And God, you made us on purposefor purpose.
And I pray for these sweet onesthat are listening today.
Lord, I pray for your hand onthem.
I pray that you would revivehope in their heart, that, Lord,
(16:17):
you would blow your fresh windin their cells, Lord God, that
things that they thought weredead, that prayers that they
thought were just not answered,God, that you would revive hope
in those things.
God, that you would show usthat nothing is lost, that we're
not too old to do what you'veasked us to do, that you have a
good plan for us because you aregood.
(16:38):
And we just thank you, Lord.
We just thank you.
And I pray, Lord God, this weekthat you would cover us, you'd
