 Activating the Publicius Memory Grid

Objective: To practice combining vowel imagery, directional consonants, and imaginary circles to encode information using the Jacobus Publicius method.

Recall the Foundation:

  • Directions with "AB" sounds:
    • East: ABA / ABU
    • South: ABI
    • West: ABEL
    • North: ABO
  • Visual Vowel Symbols:
    • A: ladder, compass, arch
    • E: crab, spinning wheel, saw
    • I: column, fish, tower
    • O: bell, fruit, triangle
    • U: man with stretched-out legs, rake, wine press

Consonant Circles:

  • Circle 1 (Review):
    • B (east)
    • C (west)
    • D (south)
    • F (north)
  • Circle 2 (New Assignment - Imagine these in a new "circle" or mental space):
    • L (north)
    • M (east)
    • N (south)
    • P (west)

Exercise Steps:

Step 1: Internalize the New Consonant Circle

  1. Close your eyes and mentally visualize a new circle.
  2. Place the letter L at the North position. Say "L North" out loud a few times.
  3. Place the letter M at the East position. Say "M East" out loud.
  4. Place the letter N at the South position. Say "N South" out loud.
  5. Place the letter P at the West position. Say "P West" out loud.
  6. Repeat this process until you can quickly recall which letter belongs to which direction in Circle 2.

Step 2: Practice Combining Vowels and Circle 2 Consonants

  1. Pick a Vowel Image: Let's start with 'O' - the Bell.
  2. Mentally combine 'Bell' with the consonants in Circle 2, associating with their directions:
    • Imagine a Bell ringing loudly from the North, where the letter L is. Think: "OL" (like "Olé!").
    • Imagine the Bell swinging to the East, near the letter M. Think: "OM" (like "Om" meditation).
    • See the Bell falling directly South, near the letter N. Think: "ON" (like "Onward!").
    • Picture the Bell to your West, where the letter P is. Think: "OP" (like "Op art").
  3. Say these combinations out loud: OL, OM, ON, OP. Notice their subtle sound differences.
  4. Repeat with another Vowel Image: Now, try using 'U' - the Man with stretched-out legs.
    • Imagine the Man stretching to the North (L). Think: "UL".
    • See the Man reaching to the East (M). Think: "UM".
    • The Man sitting heavily to the South (N). Think: "UN".
    • The Man leaning to the West (P). Think: "UP".
  5. Say these combinations out loud: UL, UM, UN, UP.
