This week, your favorite heretical quartet—Abish, Moroni, aaaAAAaa, and Abigail—take on the juicy chaos of D&C 98, the revelation where Joseph Smith tells the Saints to turn the other cheek… after they’ve already been tarred, feathered, and handed eviction notices in Jackson County. As always, the GASP crew isn’t here to make excuses for 1830s colonizer drama, but they will unpack the religious gaslighting behind it all.
We kick things off with Abish introducing the week’s themed cocktail, the Tarred and Feathered: a dangerously delicious coffee liqueur dessert drink with iced mocha, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and shaved coconut (a.k.a. edible feathers). Think Starbucks meets early American mob violence. It pairs surprisingly well with carne asada fries and midweek existential crises.
Scriptures
Moroni tackles the scrippies with classic eye-roll energy, diving into the context of D&C 98 and its suspiciously well-timed revelation from 900 miles away. He breaks down the events in Missouri, the Saints’ escalating beef with the locals, and whether Joseph’s “divine knowledge” maybe came from… a newspaper? He also calls out the vague references to tar and feathering that the text definitely doesn’t name names on. Ghostwriting from God? We’re skeptical.
Church Teachings
aaaAAAaa reads directly from a Church manual about the “causes” of the Missouri conflict, complete with Protestant pearl-clutching and some subtle (not subtle) racism. It’s a Greatest Hits list of frontier sins: profanity, gambling, cockfighting (lol), and the real kicker—being poor and Southern. Cue some Appalachian shade and a necessary roasting of the Church’s revisionist history.
History
Abigail brings us the story of Harvey Fletcher, the devout Mormon physicist who helped invent stereo sound and, unintentionally, this podcast’s audio quality. He may have tried to hear God more clearly, but ended up giving us the dulcet tones of Google eyes and ice clinks. Thanks, Harvey. Science wins again.
It’s a rich episode full of mob violence, mocha cocktails, and Mormon mythmaking. Drink up and stay irreverent.
