Speaker 4 (01:17):
Welcome back.
This is DJ Tyler and we aregoing to discuss cancer and its
impact on our lives.
Cancer is a complex diseasecharacterized by the
uncontrolled growth and spreadof abnormal cells.
It can develop in almost anypart of the body and affects
individuals differentlydepending on the type, stage and
location.
Despite advancements in medicalscience, cancer remains one of
the leading causes of deathworldwide.

(01:37):
Treatment decisions are oftencritical and can significantly
impact patients' quality of lifeand survival prospects.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
Cancer touches lives in ways few other diseases do,
prompting a rigorous pursuit ofbetter treatments and eventual
cures.
Lately, the focus has beenshifting towards more targeted
and less invasive treatmentoptions.
Let's begin with a discussionon targeted therapy.
Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which attacks all rapidly
dividing cells, targeted therapyzeroes in on cancer-specific
molecules and pathways criticalfor tumor growth and survival.

(02:14):
Let's hear from Dr Mary Gupta,a researcher in general health
and molecular oncology.

Speaker 6 (02:20):
Thank you for inviting to your podcast again.
It's always a pleasure.
Thank you for inviting to yourpodcast again.
It's always a pleasure.
Targeted therapies are designedto interfere with specific
molecules necessary for tumorgrowth.
These drugs often result infewer side effects compared to
traditional chemotherapy becausethey aim directly at cancer

(02:40):
cells, leaving healthy cellsrelatively unharmed.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
Thank you, Dr Gupta.
Another revolutionary approachis cancer vaccines, which are
designed to either preventcancer or treat it by
stimulating the immune system toattack cancer cells.
Next up, we have immunologistDr Richard.

Speaker 7 (02:57):
Lee, to train the immune system to recognize and
destroy cancer cells, thoughstill largely in the
experimental phase, sometherapeutic cancer vaccines have
shown promising results inclinical settings.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
This brings us to the role of genetics in cancer
treatment, specifically in thepromising field of clustered,
regularly interspaced, shortpalindromic repeats and gene
editing technologies, whichallow for precise modifications
to cancer cells.
For an insight into thesetechnologies, we reached out to
Dr Emily Tran, who is activelyinvolved in gene editing

(03:38):
research.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Thank you, dj Mikey D , for the invite.
I love your show and listen toyour daily motivation podcast
all of the time.
Show and listen to your dailymotivation podcast all of the
time.
Okay, clustered, regularlyInterspaced, short Palindromic
Repeats.
Technology has the potential tocorrect genetic mutations
associated with cancer.
This form of treatment coulddrastically improve outcomes and

(04:00):
may even provide solutions forotherwise untreatable forms of
cancer.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
The role of genetic information doesn't stop there.
The advent of whole genomesequencing offers incredible
opportunities for personalizingtreatment plans.
By identifying geneticmutations, researchers can
develop drugs that specificallytarget those forms of cancer
cells.
As we look ahead, collaborationamong scientists and

(04:25):
institutions remains crucial.
Look ahead collaboration amongscientists and institutions
remains crucial.
Global networks share vitaldata that accelerates the pace
of discovery, ensuring thatbreakthroughs become therapies
as soon as possible.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
As I mentioned previously, cancer treatments
generally aim to remove ordestroy cancer cells, control
the disease or alleviatesymptoms.
The most common treatmentmodalities include the following
One Surgery Involves removingthe tumor and surrounding tissue
to eliminate cancer from thebody.
2.
Radiation therapy Useshigh-energy rays to target and

(04:57):
kill cancer cells or shrinktumors.
3.
Chemotherapy Utilizes drugs tokill or slow the growth of
rapidly dividing cancer cells.
4.
Immunotherapy it enhances thebody's immune system to of
rapidly dividing cancer cells.
Four immunotherapy it enhancesthe body's immune system to
recognize and fight cancer cells.
Five targeted therapy Focuseson specific proteins or genetic
changes in cancer cells to blocktheir growth and spread.

(05:19):
Six hormone therapy Inhibitshormones that fuel certain
cancers, such as breast andprostate cancer.
Seven stem cell transplant itreplaces diseased bone marrow
with healthy cells, allowing forhigh-dose chemotherapy.
Opting for cancer treatment orforegoing it entirely involves

(05:39):
several emotional, physical andpractical implications.
This is even true in my case,as I too am considering the
options.
With treatment, it can extendlife expectancy and improve
survival rates, especially forearly stage cancers, where
intervention can result inremission or cure.
While treatment can lead toside effects like fatigue,
nausea and hair loss, managingthese effects can ultimately

(06:02):
lead to better long-term lifequality as the disease is
controlled or eradicated.
Engaging in treatment providesmany patients and families with
a proactive approach to fightingthe illness, often offering
hope and a sense of control.
Here is what I researched goingthrough cancer without
treatment.
For advanced stage cancers orwhen guidelines suggest limited

(06:25):
benefit, some individuals mayopt for palliative care focused
on symptom management andmaintaining comfort.
Avoiding aggressive treatmentscan circumvent the adverse side
effects, preserving a morenormal lifestyle in the short
term.
The decision not to pursuetreatment can stem from personal
, ethical or quality of lifeconsiderations, focusing instead

(06:46):
on family time or personalprojects.
In my case, I had gone throughthis two decades ago and had a
bad experience.
The decision to undergo cancertreatment or not is profoundly
personal and should be guided bymedical advice alongside an
individual's values andpreferences.
Be mindful that some cancersare treatable.

(07:07):
Ultimately, a thoroughdiscussion with oncologists,
family and possibly mentalhealth professionals can provide
clarity and confidence in thedecision-making process.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
It's a very exciting time in cancer research, with
optimism growing that the nextmajor breakthroughs are just
around the corner.
