Summer Sundays are meant for freshly cutgrass ballpark dogs and the best baseball talk
you can find. So kick backwith your bacon and eggs and pour yourself
a mimosa while Phillies announcer Greg Murphyand Green Legion Radio's Chris Sack break down
your fighting fills and take you aroundthe league right now on Baseball Brunch play
(00:29):
Ballman, Plumb Power by Green leadTo Radio. We are live down here
(00:50):
at Exfinity Live right in front ofBroad Street Bullies pup Man. It is
a gorgeous day here in the DelawareValley. We're hoping to avoid understorms this
afternoon for Phillies Mets, but weshall see how mother Nature intends to treat
us today. I'm Chris Sack ofGreenlea To Radio and I am sitting alongside
my co host, my partner incrime, Greg Murphy. What's going on?
(01:14):
Murph? You know what? Igotta be honest. I woke up
the serrunting I saw these blue skiesand I'm like, what's going on here?
For the last three days, I'vebeen like glued to my weather app
just to anticipating delay after delay. We've had none and today gorgeous day out
here in South Philadelphia. And yeah, to your point, some scattered thunder
storms out there, but it lookslike we're gonna be good to go to
(01:38):
play baseball today. Phillies need awin this afternoon, win this series,
go on from there, head offto Chicago feeling good. But a win
today is a must. You know, I don't say that very often,
but I feel like, especially inJune. Yeah, today's a huge game
for a lot of different reasons. You know, you need to win a
series against the Mets. You needto do it here at home. They
haven't done it in two years, exactly right, But I haven't done that
(02:00):
since twenty twenty one. You haveZach Wheeler on the mount against Carrasco,
who has really been scuffling this year. The offense needs to come out early
and often score some runs today. They need to take it to the next
today and and show them that youknow what, you don't have our number
at this point, right. Youknow they won three in New York.
You went to add a three herein Philadelphia. You see them in September.
(02:22):
Seven games in September. We'll seeyou then. And at that point,
you know, you won't all thisat that point, you know,
things will be even up there.I think it's a big, big game
for sure. And they have oneof the guys that they need to have
on the mount today. I meanoutside of Taiwan Walker over last four starts,
and we're gonna tie out into thatin a little bit. Zach Wheeler
is the guy right now in thisstarting pitching staff that you need to have
(02:43):
a big day. And he hasn'tpitched in a week. I mean,
so like you know, he's hadthe extra rest. Thankful, you know
for that. Obviously they had theoff day on Monday, but then they
got rained out on Wednesday and hegot pushed back, so he should be
fresh, good to go. Iexpect the ninety seven ninety eight Wheeler today,
not the ninety five ninety six wherehe was sitting last week. I
think with that extra day or twothat he's getting, I think you're going
(03:06):
to see electric stuff out of ZachWhillard this afternoon, and the Phillies need
it. But we're going to diveinto the offense. They need the offensive
production. Today is the type ofday where the ball should be flying out
of the ballpark. It needs tobe hitting season because I'm growing frustrated,
just as many Phillies are Phillies fansare with this offensive production. It just
has not been there. But we'lldive for a little bit further into that
(03:28):
coming up here, because this firstsegment is brought to you by State Farm.
Here's the deal. When you combineState Farm home and auto insurance,
you save an average of eight hundredand eighty nine dollars. Yea, eight
hundred and eighty nine dollars. StateFarm agent Dave Bibusso is ready to help
you combine home and auto in SouthJersey in Pennsylvania called day today at eight
five six seven four zero five zeroone two. That's eight five six seven
(03:49):
four zero five zero one two, like a good neighbors. State Farm is
there. And the average annual perhousehold savings are based on a twenty nineteen
national survey by State Farm of newpolicyholders who reported savings by switching to State
Farm. Individual repriums will vary bycustomer, all applicants subject to State Farm
underwriting requirements. You know, Ifeel like I'm back to normal this week
because a couple of weeks ago,I was sitting on Murf's left, and
(04:11):
we've been doing the show for threeyears, and that was the first time
that I think, if ever setson my left show down here. Yeah,
it throws me off a little bit, you know, like I'm used
to the producer being over here, you being to my left, and I'm
glad to be back in this andalso, hey, we're gonna be back
down here again next week. Thisis the first time I think all season
we've done back to back shows hereexpanding lives. I know what a weird
schedule we're going through right now.So we leave what the team leaves tonight
(04:35):
for Chicago off day in Chicago tomorrow, then three games in the Chicago and
then right back home. Three gameroad trips in Major League Baseball are well
have been rare over the last twentyyears, but with this new balance schedule,
I think we have two of themthis year where we just go away
for three year because when we goto Cleveland, we're in Cleveland for three
games and come back out to bein August because we're home a ton in
(04:57):
August. We are I believe byseason take a I think we only have
six away games in August. Themonth of August. Last the Phillies have
played the fewest home games I believethis is still true, the fewest home
games in all of Major League Baseball, and have one of the best records
at home. So that's good news. You know, if you think about
what August could bring when you're playingtwenty out of your twenty six games here
(05:19):
at Citizens Bank Park, that couldbe really, really big for the Pills.
They've spent so much time out onthe road. They're playing better on
the road right now, but earlyon they didn't play well on the road
at all. And the funny thingis we only had three home games left
between now and the All Star Game, and that's next weekend against the Nationals.
You know, I can't even wrapmy head around the fact that the
All Star Game is next week. When we get back from Chicago, at
(05:41):
the end of this week, we'llhave played half the season, eighty one
games in the books. I don'tknow about you, Sach, but you
know, being here at the ballparkevery day, being with the team every
day. When you start out onthat journey each year in April, you
look at the schedule, You're like, oh, all right, here we
go. You know, put onyou're back back and let's let's get to
work. And now I look backand I'm like, where did that go?
(06:05):
That went, like, you know, in a blink of an eye.
We're halfway through the season. It'scrazy how quickly things go. Maybe
it's just because I'm getting old.I don't know, but but man,
I can't believe we're at the midwaypoint yet. Because also, I mean,
you're, you know, second straight, You're you're back full time with
the team on the road all thetime. You know, like it's it's
(06:25):
great to see. I mean, you know, it's great to be a
part of, you know, likecovering the team like I've been able to.
I've been privileged a dude the lastfew years here on Green Legion Radio.
But listen, I want to wewant to give away a couple more
tickets, another pair of tickets forPhillies Nationals on Thursday, August tenth,
at six forty pm down here atsince In Bank Park. Listen, nobody
needs to suck up when I'm askingfor a favorite duo. You don't have
(06:46):
to say Sack and Murph, allright. It just you know, it
kind of goes without saying. It'sIt's like you prefer Spagetti and meatball.
You know, like, well, there goes my list. Yeah, you
just picked the three right off credical. But you know, in light of
the fact that, hey, thisweekend is the London series. Phillies Mets
are gonna be the London series nextyear, which is gonna be awesome.
(07:09):
Jimmy Rowlins and Chase Utley are backtogether again, and Ryan Howard and Ryan
Howard. That's all the big piece. But if I'm talking about duos,
though, you gotta go with thedouble play combination Jay Roll and Chase Utley.
So in honor of that, giveus your favorite duo. All right,
Well I have five of them, but I'll give you one right now.
We'll unveil the rest later on inthe show, but I'll start easy.
(07:30):
I'm gonna show my age here, but that's okay because I think everybody
knows that I'm an old guy.But Fred and Barney, you know,
when I was growing up, FredFlintstone and Barney Rabble were the ultimate duo,
the water Buffaloes. They were theYeah, I mean the guys.
They could do it all. Really, I mean they wrote Dinosaurs and and
Bold one their piky toes. Som Fred and Barney are are on my
(07:55):
list. They're not number one,but they're on my list. So I'll
throw that one out there. Flintstoneand Raw what a combo, all right,
I'm gonna go with Dumb and Dummer. I'm gonna go Lloyd Christmas and
Harry Dunn. Yeah, like thosetwo together, and that listened that the
sequel was was was not that good? It was. They could probably say
it was it was terrible. Butif you're gonna go back thirty years,
(08:16):
I mean that set the tone forfor comedy movies for the last thirty years.
It's untouchable. Those two were incredibletogether. Jansen is a movie buff.
Now, you don't have to gowith a movie here, but give
me your favorite duo. I'll gowith another Barney. I always loved Andy
Griffith and Barney as Well show show. Yeah, because my dad used to
watch that. I'm showing my dad'sage, yes he is, but I
(08:39):
always I love that show. Thatthat duo together was hilarious. I'm gonna
get and hey, by the way, the second segment today, we're gonna
have a guest on the show thatDivide Lives, Mike Powers. He's a
Mets fan, but I'll tell youwhat he was wearing red yesterday and an
oversized hat that would have provided likea retractable roof if rain did hit Sits
in Bank Park yesterday. Mike isgonna be with us. We'll get your
(09:01):
favorite due when we get you intosecond segment. Slash, by the way,
so I can Slashes back in studiofor us. As Mike called him
yesterday, we have a new nicknamefor Slash now. He is now going
to be known as the magic Man. How you see me now? Yeah,
there are no words, Jim magicMan, give me your favorite due?
Is that a wrestling thing? Bythe no tal Dagan Knights. He's
(09:24):
like, you're just mad because Ithought about it first. I'll go just
because of recency, uh bias.I just watched this movie a couple weeks
ago. Um Wesley s Knights andWoody Harrelson White Man can't jump here you
go. That's a good one andrecently remade. I have no interest in
seeing the m I saw it.It's you don't have to see it.
(09:45):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it'sone of those, the first one,
so I didn't see it and youdon't have to see all right, Murf.
Let's get out of the box.Let's talk some fighting Phil's baseball here.
Phillies have gone two and three sinceour last show last week, obviously
the day off on Monday and therain out on Wednesday. So and that
includes loss yesterday against Max Chers andMets. And I'll tell you what,
I can't wait for that guy toretire. I've had enough of Max Scherzer
(10:07):
during the course of his major leaguecareer going up against the Phillies. It's
funny because he gets jacked up againstthe Braves and then you know, a
Yankee lineup with no Aaron Judge init, and then he comes back to
us and he's like cy young Maxschers are all over again. Yeah,
but completely frustrating. The starting pitchinghas been phenomenal the last few weeks.
Taiwan Walker last word starts twenty sixendings, pitch, twenty six strikeouts,
(10:30):
two earned runs, and his earrais a point six nine a minute school
point six nine mirth. But let'snot start out talking about the starting pitching
like we did last week, whichwe pretty much did the whole segment.
The offensive struggles continue for the teamthat is built to mash this team has
done far from that. They're twentyfirst and major League Baseball and runs scored,
(10:52):
they're averaging three and a half runsper game. Since they had the
fifteen run outburst against the Diamondbacks acouple of weeks ago, they had a
couple opportunities where they had the braveson the ropes with Aaron Nola and Ranger
Sores with their last outings, andwe couldn't get one of those two games
because the offense wouldn't produce. What'sgoing on with this lineup here? You
(11:13):
know, it's a great question.Um, I guess if we're gonna point
to any positive, we're gonna smilefor a picture. Yes, here we
go, great radio, here wego. Uh, we got some Mets
fans in the house. But yeah, yeah, I know you guys brought
it. You brought it. Hopefullywe bring it today. That would be
ideal. I guess if you're gonnalook at one positive, and that's kind
(11:35):
of what I do. So I'mgonna spind it a little bit positive.
I think about three weeks ago,the offense was twenty sixth in all the
Major League Baseball. They're not twentyfirst in baseball, so they're moving in
the right direction. That said, what we've seen so far is not only
kind of a head scratcher, Ithink, because when you look at the
talent, you know, you putthe lineup card out everything it's you're right,
(11:56):
it's crazy good, and then ithasn't produced. And I think there's
lots of reasons for it. Theyreally haven't gotten With the exception of that
short two week period start out guys, yeah, where a couple of guys
were hot, they really haven't hadtheir superstars hot at the same time.
You know, JT got hot atone point. Trey has really never been
(12:18):
hot. Bryce was hot when hefirst came back. He's cooled off a
little bit. Cascianos has been themost consistent throughout the course of the season,
and he has been good, buthe really hasn't had a whole lot
of help. And some of theyoung guys, you know, Brandon started
off on fire, but he cooledstarting to heat up a little bit again,
which is good to see. BrysonStotts cooled a little bit as good
as he was early in the season. So in order to you know,
(12:41):
score a lot of runs, youneed three or four guys up and down
the lineup consistently hitting, and wejust haven't seen that yet. I think
we will. I hope we will. They need that because to your point,
they're built to win games by scoringruns. The starting pitching knock On
Wood has been awesome and and hashelped them win a lot of games in
the month of June. But ifthis team's gonna go where they want to
(13:05):
go, they need to line upup and down to be producing. And
uh, you know, hopefully wesee it. We still have a half
a season to go. There's alot of time, a lot of time,
but you need these guys to startcoming out. I can't figure out
Trey Turner because trade, to meone of the best players in baseball,
not just offensively, just one ofthe best players in baseball. And for
(13:26):
the Phillies to bring him in hereon the deal that he did, I
was through the roof and he justhasn't, for whatever reason, clicked yet
this year. Now he's going toIt's much like Nick Castianos a year ago.
They're just too good of players tobe kept down. Um, but
hopefully we don't have to wait theentire season, right, Yeah, we
don't wait until twenty four actually findhis stride exactly exactly he's going to find
(13:52):
his stride. Nick, It tookan entire season. Hopefully Trey finds it
in a half a season because whenhe finds a stride, look out.
Because I know Phillies fans know TradeTurner what kind of player he is,
but getting to watch him every day, I can't wait to watch the Trade
Turner that I know in a Phillies'uniform every day because man, he is
(14:13):
as exciting of a ballpet player asthey get nowadays, and we just haven't
seen that yet. Yeah, weneed that electricity for sure. And I
know we've talked about the lineup acouple of times and like you know,
hey, listen, Topper is theone that writes up the lineup. I
still don't like the fact that Schwarberis ahead of him though, like you
know, in the lineup, andI know that's where I know, that's
where he's comfortable. But you're takingaway the ability of utilizing the speed of
(14:35):
a Trade Turner. When if Schwarber, you know, if he doesn't hit
a home runner, it doesn't strikeout, But if he walks and he
actually hits a single, he's cloggingup the bass pass in front of trade
turner and you know, like you'vesigned this guy and I was sitting there
like maybe fifteen twenty home runs iswhat you can expect the season at a
trade turner, which is fine, but like I'm looking at doubles, triple
(14:56):
steals, exciting baseball, exciting brandof baseball. I think they didn't give
enough time for him in that leadoffspot, which is where they had him
written up from the time they signedhim in November all the way through spring
training. That's where the ideal spotwas him to be. That was where
we needed him to be to reallyignite this lineup. I agree, um
in you know in that certainly whenTrey gets on behind Kyle, it does
(15:20):
negate some of his tools for sure. You know, Kyle has been better
in the in the leadoff role sincehe's come back, although he hasn't been
lights out. But what Rob Thompsonhas said time and time again that he
likes about Kyle in that leadoff spotis that, you know, right off
the bat, first batter of thegame threat to take the lead, and
(15:41):
he has produced in that role.Uh, you know, with leadoff on
runs the only leadoff once a game, right, So you certainly could make
the argument that for that one time, is putting Kyle up at the top
of the lineup worth it? Right? Yes, And I can see that
argument for sure. Even just flipflopping them and putting Trey in the leadoff
(16:03):
spot and Kyle at two makes aworld of difference in terms of we.
I mean the other thing you coulddo, I think I think swords would
seem more fastballs. Yeah, hewould see more fastballs if Turner is on
first base and he has the abilityto steal second. I mean, only
you can only throw over twice. So if you're gonna try, it's either
you're gonna throw a fastball because you'retrying to get him out at second base
stealing and shortber can handle the fastballs, or you got the other alternative,
(16:30):
Like listen, I'm about the onewho writes up the lineup, right.
It just it just makes more sensefor Turner to have the ability just let
him loose. Yeah, again,I can't argue with what you're saying,
because you know, as a asa traditional baseball guy, that's what that's
where we're at. That's where we'reat. You know, you put speed
up top, but the power behindthem, you know, And that's the
(16:51):
way it has worked for years. And I've said this a couple of times
over the last couple of weeks.I might have said it to you.
I think we should have to startlooking at the lineup construct a little bit
differently nowadays because they are using somuch of the analytics to build the lineup.
Now, they have reasons for whatthey're doing. It's not like,
you know, dartboard in the morning, Rob Thompson and all right, schub
(17:14):
is gonna lead off kind of thing. I mean, there is tons and
tons of analytical data that is goinginto those decisions, so they do have
their reasons. That said, wouldI be shocked that by the end of
the year if Turner's back in theleadoff spot, No, I would not.
I do think at some point theymight try that again. But until
(17:37):
they do, you know, hey, the films have won a lot of
games in June with Kyle as theleadoff guy, so it's hard to argue,
you know, if they were fiveand twelve in June with Kyle as
the leadoff guy, I think we'dhave a much stronger argument. And I
know, you know, we're doingsports talk radio, and it's important to
have takes and everything, But atthe end of the day, what Rob
(17:57):
Thompson has done year plus that he'sbeen the manager. You know, if
you're talking about pushing the right buttons, you know, eighty percent of the
time, the eighty five percent ofthe time he's pushed the right buttons.
So hard for me to sit hereand really question. I understand the logic
for sure, and I'm sure hedoes too, but he's he's privy to
(18:19):
a lot more infro than I have. So as long as they keep winning
games, I don't care what theline up looks like. Honestly. Yeah,
you know, today's June twenty fifth. It's been a full calendar,
full calendar month since Bryce Harper haslast hit a home run. Nuts the
opening game against the Braves down Atlantawas the last time Bryce Harper hit a
home run. And I know it'sstarting to catch up to him a little
(18:41):
bit, you know, the questionsare starting to rise. That's twenty four
games since he's last at a homerun. And this is this is Bryce
Harper we're talking about. This isn'tlike you know, some Joe Schmo that's
batting eight or nine in our lineup, you know, the power outage,
and like you could see, it'skind of starting to wear him as the
questions start to come this week. You know, five strikeouts. He's had
(19:02):
two strikeouts in that in that Thursdaygame, the one it was like five
six feet in front of the platewith the bounce on three pitches. Um,
you know, when can we expecthis drought to end? Today?
Beautiful day here in South Philadelphia. You know it's the ball should be jumping
Carls Carrasco on the mountain. Yeah, I mean, you would think that
today could be the day. ButBryce, my dad says this all the
(19:22):
time. When Bryce is going great, is when Bryce is going to the
left side, it's Ryan Howard Likethat's that was like really, Bryan Howard's
like NBP season, get fifty eighthome runs, get twenty nine to left,
twenty nine to right. When Bryceis going great, it's like you
could tell right now his shoulders pullingout, his head's pulling out, like
everything is not in sync right now. Because I think he's aware of the
(19:45):
drought. It annoys him to noend. And that's the reason why we're
starting to see what we've seen outof Bryce to these last four or five
games. Yeah, he took acouple of swings yesterday and good swings.
They weren't bad swings. It tooka couple of swings yesterday where you could
almost see the aggression, you know, in his well, certainly in the
swing, but in his mind andhis mindset of I'm gonna barrow this up
(20:08):
and I'm gonna hit it to SouthJersey. Because I agree, I think
at this point he is aware ofhow long it's been. I don't know
this for a fact. I thinkI heard or read at some point the
twenty four games is the longest inhis career. So today's twenty four,
then that would everybody's twenty five.Okay, So yeah, so unless he
(20:30):
hits one today, I believe that'sgoing to be the longest streak in his
career. So yeah, it's absolutelyweighing on him. Bryce Harper is the
kind of guy that wants to bein the middle of it all, wants
to help the team win every singlebit. I mean, they all do,
but but Bryce takes a lot ofpride in that. And Bryce certainly
has the ability to do that.So I do think it's weighing on him
(20:52):
a little bit. I'm not asconcerned about the strikeouts. Bryce is gonna
strike out, and and he hasfaced so many left handers during this stretch.
He's seen a lot of breaking ballstoo. It's the most he's ever
seen his career. Yeah, andI think teams are seeing that he's been
so uber aggressive that they're you know, throwing him the slow stuff. They're
throwing him the breaking stuff. Andhe's been swinging over top of change ups.
He's been swinging over the top ofcurved balls and sliders obviously, but
(21:18):
you know, he also hasn't connectedon the fastballs he's seen. So Rob
Thompson has been asked this question, you know, a couple of times over
the last couple of days, andagain, you know, Rob is saying
what you would expect him to say, and that is it'll come. But
but again, I had no reasonto believe that it won't because that's Bryce
Harper. You know, he's he'snot good that you just think, Okay,
(21:40):
sooner or later, you know, this game's hard hitting him hard,
Yes it is, and uh andsooner or later he's gonna probably bust out
of it. Let's call it rightnow, Harper home run today, I'm
calling it mark it down, slash. I think Cassie Amens is gonna hit
one after that murder last night inColorado. Yeah, I mean one yesterday.
(22:00):
Well yeah, but that was afteryou know, the people in the
Titanic submarine died. Oh my gosh, stop. I mean it's it's like
a proven fact. Hastian, hehits, he hits home run the next
day side note, not approven fact, but okay, don't hang out alone
in the main game for baseball thisseason. Try hanging out at Cheerleaders with
sexy entertainers, four dollars, domesticbeers, Jamison specials, and awesome game
(22:21):

It's it's an honor to be here. You guys are amazing your legend,
man, I know, like honestly, like I look at that's just a
(24:37):
common theme. You see all theseguys Philly fans coming in taking pictures of
you guys here. So it's awesome, axfinities, very very lucky to have
you here. For sure. Iwant to go back to last segment real
quick and give you my duo.I'm not gonna say what everybody thinks.
I'm gonna say and say write andRey is because that's a who I'm gonna
go Lennon McCartney. I think that'sthe best ever. Like it. Like
(25:00):
it, huge Beatles fan. Eventhe break up one of my favorite songs
when I like London, how DoYou Sleep? Is real motion of a
couple breaking up. So I loveit all, man, I can't get
enough of it. I don't likewhat they're doing now they're gonna take some
of Lennon's old UH recordings and useAI to finish a song. I let
(25:22):
it, let it be, youknow what I mean to speak. Yeah,
it's amazing. We finally met aMets fan with the brain appreciate it.
That's good stuff. That that's areally good one. Thank Yeah.
So I had time. I hadlike twenty hits to figure it out.
So when you give me time tothat just goes to show how much Murph
loves these stupid things I put think. I like this kind. It's a
(25:45):
good one. I like it.Which, by the way, we're putting
out the caveat too. You can'tput Harry and Woody yeah too easy,
yeah, too easy. And Francyn La yeah more modern easy and you
know those guys are just it shouldbe include te Mac and Uh I mean,
I wouldn't include the Phillies announcers atthis point, you know, Yeah,
yeah, let's let's we'll stay awayhim dead. So listen. We
(26:06):
had some fun yesterday on the showMurfum so I had the privilege of not
doing it once but twice, givingout my most hated mets starting nine.
And you pretty much do that everyday of your life anyway. You wake
up and you're like, here e, here e, here are the ten
mets I've hated my entire life.God bless my wife for having to listen
to that hundred sixty five days ayear. Next year's a leap year,
so she gets an extra day.So I'm gonna give Mike an opportunity because
(26:30):
I was on. I was recordingthe show with them yesterday for an hour.
But you didn't get the opportunity becausewe had like the seven line Army
guy who was a dad captain showedup. It was It was definitely entertaining
for sure, with the Sheffield shufflerthat was alongside me for most of the
show. Yeah, so I wantto get your top five most hated Phillies.
I think this would be funny here. Yeah, that's fair, So
(26:51):
I am from Jersey, well originallyBrooklyn, but I lived most of my
life near Lakewood, so I hadthe privilege and honor to watch Ryan Howard
developed just smashing home runs in thatballpark. So one of my least favorite
Phillies and I understand why the Philliesdid it was Jim Tommy because interesting,
Yeah, because it prolonged his minorleague career. And as you know,
(27:12):
like, uh, in my eyes, I think Howard is a Hall of
Famer. I'm not gonna lie.I think he might have to get in
there with like the veteran thing orwhatever. But if he had that extra
time in Citizens Bank, I thinkit would have meant more. You know,
I remember Rays and Right as amet fan coming up. They were
improven yet, but it would havebeen cool to watch him cut his team.
(27:32):
Two things about that though, Okay, Howard did get the bath hole
from Tony, yeah, and thatwas Charlie two of them. Yeah yeah,
but Tommy being here was a presenceon him and doing that with the
bat point. And I mean thePhillies at the time were being known that
they were known as being cheap, you know, through two thousand and two,
and they had to sell out astadium that they were going to tear
(27:53):
down in two thousand and three, and they had a new ballpark in two
thousand and four that they had tosell tickets for and get people cited about
the team again. Tomy I saysall the time, and my dad like
doesn't understand. He says, it'sa wall of mediocrity. And you know,
like Tony had like two great yearshere and he's on the Wall of
fame. But him signing here changedyour trajectory of that Triti era of Phillies
(28:15):
baseball. That's that's accurate, uh, And that's exactly why they went out
and got him. I've had longconversations with Ed Wade about how that process
all, you know, kind oftook place, with rubenamar Jr. Who
is one of my partners now alsovery much involved as the assistant general manager
at that time, and to endto hear why they went after Tomy's fascinating
and how they went about it andhow they found out and the electric workers
(28:37):
over. Yeah, it did changethe way the Phillies organization viewed themselves going
forward. No longer that small marketmentality, which and we've seen the fruits
of that ever since it's so interestingyou say that, Mike, and I
think it's a really thoughtful way ofapproaching that list, starting with Tommy,
because Tomy is probably People ask meall the time, who's the best player
(29:02):
he ever covered? Who's the bestguy you ever got to cover? And
I always say the combination, andit's not even close when I stopped to
think about it. Of best peopleand best talent, put together Jim Tomy
in a runaway because he's one ofthe best human beings you'll ever meet,
and he is one of the bestone of the best players I've ever played
this game, right, you putthose two things together, and I had.
(29:23):
I was lucky enough to cover himtwo times here in Philadelphia. So
awesome guy. But hey, youcan hate him for the reason to hate
him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love it all right. It
was just amazing watching Ryan Howard dowhat he did in the Miners and I
had a front row seat to it, literally, and the Lakewood Blue Clause
retired his number rightfully so immediately. But I'm like, man, this is
(29:44):
I know Philly will do the rightthing, but I feel like his legacy
definitely was put on hold. AndI get it n help and they did
that. They did that the Uglytwo. Yeah, I'm sure he's somewhere
on that list as well. Wellit might be number one. Yeah,
yeah, I'm gonna get him itspoiler alert, I'm gonna get into that.
So I created to give us aShot network. It's a podcast network
that allows guys like me or peoplethat are trying to figure out how to
(30:07):
create a podcast. They could useus to really create that platform. And
it might be something simple like youknow, they don't know how to make
graphics, they don't know how toget their voice out or even upload a
podcast and where there to assist,But they give us a shot. Part
is from the Utly Noah Syndagarde mikedup umpire thing where ter gotta give us
a shot. So if it wasn'tif it wasn't for Utly, I wouldn't
(30:32):
have a network. So I loveHoward you love like I'm just like you
know what I think under that ifit wasn't for if it wasn't for Utly,
Wilmer Flores would ed up gotten toplay shortstop the year you Guys went
to the World Series in twenty fifteen, because he did exactly what all Mets
fans wanted him, wanted the Metsto do was the bench to Hata,
(30:52):
like they had enough of him, knowing, oh my god, he's been
like one in fifty one eighty andyou know he did you guys a favorite.
It was your rallying cry, youguys in the World Series, which
screwed up the Cubs going to theWorld Series in twenty fifteen, which was
supposed to happen because Back to theFuture two set us. Yeah, with
that whole situation, like, um, yeah, the Mets definitely capitalized on
(31:12):
that. They brought Ruben Tajada outof the dugout with like a Mets cane
and he looked like a veteran comingback from war and yeah, so there
was yeah, but but also poorguy. It ruined his career. I
don't think he barely touched the majorsafter that. Again, so the first
place, you don't wish that onanybody, certainly done and quite frankly,
(31:34):
you know, utly didn't wish thaton anybody. You know, really was
a different kind of player. Yeah, he was an old school guy and
and you know, whether you lovehim or hate him, oh I would
love him if he was on myteam, you gotta hate him if he's
not. And yeah, yeah,go ahead, because we were gonna obviously
get back to OK. Yeah,so I'm gonna go really quick, Uh
(31:56):
John Kruk only because for the samereason you guys don't like Hey John,
for the same reason you guys probablydon't like Keith R. Nandez. I
mean, it's just that it's hisbooth presence. I'm a first baseman at
heart, left handed, so Iloved his performance on the field. But
uh, you know, they're bothhomers. So if you're if you like
(32:20):
the other team, you're not gonnalike the other guy. I've seen so
many uh things with Keith Nandez's headon it, especially when he said,
uh, Phillies played terrible baseball andthen you guys ended up in the World
Series, right, So both sidesalways give it to you. And unfortunately
where I live, well, Iguess fortunately for U the broadcast, I
have to listen to Philly's announcers ifthey're playing the Mets because I get blacked
(32:44):
out from the New York side,so I'm forced to listen to to you
know, two more, two more, two more. Uh, So we
got we got Howard, we gotKruck. Yeah, I know, paper
Ole ruined my child hood. Uhnow, careful, I could see your
(33:05):
brain going. I was trying towonder was he around your mind a little?
A little man? Do I know? I felt like that. Man.
The only thing after two thousand asa Met fan, the only thing
you could work even care about, where these Philly Mets matchups. Right.
Man would come into Shae Stadium everysingle day and just Rake. So it's
(33:25):
just like, you know, that'sit man. So that obviously for that.
And and then my last one, because he was right, was Jimmy
Rollins the team to be. Imean to say that you're putting a target
on your back and they came outand did it, so you can't be
mad. Like we said the otherday though, uh you got swept by
(33:45):
what the Rockies? All right?Right after that? Oh yeah we did.
Oh yeah, I mean, hey, it was it was a lot
of fun, so much it was. It was a great time. Remember,
you know, in a learning experience, I think teams need to learn
how to win, how to getinto postseason, then how to win in
the postseason. Yeah, well letme ask this, so that that's the
list and it's a great list.If you had to put number one,
(34:07):
is it Rollins or is it Utly? Wow? I think it's it's it's
got to be ugly. Yeah, okay, just because, like you said,
you can't you love him if he'son your team. Yeah, you
absolutely hate him at these He alsoowns real estate there at city Field.
And yeah, they took the libertyto move Utley's corner closer to the plane
(34:27):
wall once he was gone. Weneed to we need Utly to lease that
out to Shoreber at this point, you know, make that Shoreber's corner.
Um. I don't know if yousaw it like or I don't know if
you saw it either. Sack. But a really great article in The Athletic
this week by Ken Rosenthal. ChaseUtley is living in London now as an
MLB ambassador, but a big partof the article is about, hey,
(34:50):
Mets fans, give this guy abreak at this point, and and and
he kind of puts out an olivebranch. Uh do he does? Yeah,
you have to read the article. He says, Look, I know,
I know it's water on the bridge. We both love baseball. I'm
a baseball fan, you're a baseballfan. Can't we all just get a
long kind of thing. It's aninteresting article. And then Rosenthal ends the
article and all and I'll spoil earthere, but he's like, yeah,
(35:12):
that's not gonna happen. Yeah, there's been too many darts stung in both
directions. You know. The oneguy that did do that, well,
Chipper Jones. He named his kidShay because he owned us. Yes,
and uh, you know, andwe call him Larry. But it's become
a little bit you know, he'she does get a mixed time. Yeah,
time heels all wounds at some point. Um, so maybe twenty five
(35:36):
years from now we can show hisface in New York City in light of
that too. I mean, listen, we we hate the Braves just as
much as we hate you guys. But from a rivalry standpoint, I know
that it's funny because a lot oftimes, when the Phillies are good,
the Mets suck. Yeah, whenthe you know, when the Mets are
good, the Phillies sucks, rightlike that stretch of baseball if they had
(35:57):
there for a few years, um, and now it's back. Yeah,
And as bad as the Mets areplaying right now, the Mets are a
good team. Yeah, and Idon't I'm not counting them out at all
this season. I really believe thatthey're going to be in the mix near
the end. Probably not not forthe division. And I'm not necessarily sure
fourteen out the brave Man tee toget hot, yes, for sure.
But but but I do think they'regoing to be in the postseason mix.
(36:20):
And I think that's great for baseball. I really think it's great for Bett
Now. I hope we beat theNets when it's all said and done,
but but I enjoy when both teamsare good, and I think both teams
are good right now. MLB recognizesthat, and that's why it's endloaded September
Mets Phillies. They're gonna cash inon that from a broadcast standpoint, for
sure. The problem I have isnow next year we're gonna lose a few
(36:43):
games to London, right, sowe're not gonna be able to fill up
this beautiful ballpark or the one inQueens. And then also, like this,
the schedule how it is now,so we're not getting as he lost
the games, so it is kindof sad we're not going to see each
other again until September. Yeah, and I hear you, but I am.
I like the balance schedule for alot of reasons. Uh, and
I think it's important now with somany wild card teams, you almost have
(37:05):
to do it that way, youknow, quite frankly for the national leaguest
right now, it's the best thingthat could happen because if not a team
from the Central, you know,it's gonna still second wild card spot because
they're gonna beat up on on thereally poor teams. Um and I for
one love the fact that the MedicineFills are gonna play in London next year.
Yeah, just awesome. I can'twait. I mean, it is
(37:25):
just wish I wish there was moregames out my wife. My wife is
trying to already promote bud Light BaseballBrunch in London next year, all as
long as Quinby's there and he's bringingthe gear. I don't feel like doing
that this time. But just realquick before we go to break and we
say goodbye to Mike here on theshow and listen, we're all we're all
dads, you know, we lovebaseball. We hate the Braves. So
(37:46):
last week was Father's Day and uhso the Braves had designated uh Charlie Culberson
for assignment on the day where hisfather was scheduled to throw out the first
pitch. Instead, they designated assignmentand they let Michael Harris's dad do the
honor. Talk about cold hearted, what a what a sham of an organization.
(38:07):
Yeah, you know, it's funny. I saw that headline last week,
and I guess I didn't quite understand. I didn't realize that that's exactly
what I ouch. That's brutal.On Father's Day. He's gonna throw about
the first pitch, and they designatedhim for assignment on Father's Day morning.
So dad gets sent down too, like you've already that's like again, throw
(38:32):
the first pitch down and and makingI don't think he got it. I
don't think you got it there atthe time. But Mike, Mike,
it's a it's a pleasure having youon the show man, great talking.
Looking forward to doing more content withyou in the future. Goils Mike.

to start listening to that show sowe can get back in the wing column
after last week. Yeah, Ineed all the help. I can get.
(41:12):
This is why I don't do itfor real. Yes, all right,
so let's finish out your your fiveduos. Mur give us to give
us the other four on your list, all right, in no particular order.
Okay, never is Nope, Igave you Fred and Barney already.
H you did Fred Flintstone and BarneyRubble they're cool. Uh. This is
another one that kind of brings soundsso short that they were that cool,
kind of had the hesitation. Ilearned everything about being cool from Fred and
(41:34):
Barney, so you know, kindof shows you you could go yogi and
Boo Boo go, Hello you go. And I never liked that Booboo was
a was a painting the button, all right, Jack and Diane, Okay,
yeah, yeah, paint a pictureof the life that night, you
know. But like no, Jackand Diane, because it brings me back
to some great times in my life. That song was a huge hit at
(41:58):
at the time. I think itwas on the radio last night when I
was oh and yeah. It stilllives to this day. It's a great
My kids love that song now.Uh so Jack and Diane they live on
as a great for sure. UmSummer days, Gin and Tonic, right,
or Bourbon and coke or whatever youwant, whatever, whatever, but
I'll go Gin and Tonic on asummer afternoon. That's a pretty good combo,
(42:22):
no doubt. Uh. The BluesBrothers, Okay, all right,
have you ever seen there? Youprobably haven't seen the Blues Brothers. I
have movie, great movie, um, very funny Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi
back in the day, but youknow, also a part of Saturday Night
right for a long time. Anduh, they were just hysterical and and
and their humor still lives today, like it works even today. So for
(42:45):
that reason, I put them onmy list. And finally talking about cool
mavericking Goose right tone, yeah,so uh, and I kind of relate
a lot more to Goose, whichsays a lot about me. But but
you know, Mavericking Goose together, they were a great combo. So uh,
that's my fun sounds great. Wedidn't get any butt kick butt kissers
(43:06):
on the list this week, soI know, but you still wanted to
see I still would. It stillwould have been nice to see somebody say
sacking. But then but then again, I'll go on to your Instagram and
like one of your pictures you'll befine, self deprecating, no doubt about
it. All right, So herewe go. We got Batman and Robin
(43:27):
Yeah, peanut butter and chocolate.Okay, Cheech and Chong, Walter White
and Jesse Pinkman. Now that's apretty good common I know. But after
you ran about breaking bad last week, Ralph Kramden and ed ed Norton the
Honeymooner. Yeah, great, BlackThunder and White Lightning. I don't even
(43:49):
know who I mean, uh,Summer All and Madden. Oh, it's
a good one. But I didsay I didn't. I personally wasn't gonna
do any announcers were good. Butthat is a good one. Okay.
So all right, so where areyou going? Okay, So that's our
list right there? Um, whatwas the first one? Again? Batman
and Robert. The second one peanutbutter and chocolate. That's pretty good.
(44:09):
I mean, I like Reese's pieces, all right. Black Thunder and White
Lightning are from Major League two.Just to clare ever, that's our buddy
Louis Domingez, so you can yellat him after the show. Oh we
will. I'm gonna go. I'mgonna go against what I said. I'm
gonna go Madden summer. I'm rightthere with you. Yeah, no doubt
matter. Congratulations Mike. Oh,Mike here at the program, and it
(44:32):
pays off for him to come downhere. He's here. He's here pretty
much every Sunday. And we wereall just talking and I said, yeah,
I'm gonna stay away from announcers becauseyou know, but that that was
the best one. I don't saythe name along with it. Yeah,
No, we don't ever. Idon't ever want to know who's sending the
email address. That way I canget your tickets Allrngratulations. All right,
Marc, let's get to our picks. Were today's action in Major League Baseball.
(44:55):
We both went wanted two last weekand we both scored one point.
So you're now it's sixteen and elevenwith eighteen and a half points and half
points, um, and I amnow seventeen two half points is a point
for the record. I learned thatat Saint Joel's. Oh is that all
you learned your in your education?Oh? And the Gin and Tonic thing
I learned. But I have athree and a half point lead on you
(45:20):
in the in the point standing,so I'm only one game up on you,
but in the points, which iswhere it matters, where matters,
three and a half up on you. So why don't you give me your
first pick for today? All right, I'm gonna go backwards. I'm gonna
go start with my over under today, my over under. And again,
I'm a terrible gambler, and Idon't gamble in real life. Pirates and
Marlins, the over under in thatgame is seven. It is right,
(45:44):
So so should that scream take theover and right? And they played to
the under the first two games,I believe, I think they it was
like four to three yesterday. Ithink three one or three two, like,
yeah, low scoring series so farin Miami. All right, so
as a season gambler, you wouldsay, go over right. I mean,
I know the line is saying, probably telling me one nothing. She's
(46:05):
all right, Well, I'm takingthe over over under seven on the Pirates
and the Marlins. You know, before we went on air, this looked
pretty good. Cubs minus one sixtyfive in London versus Saint Louis. Now
they're down six four? Is that? I don't want to throw my neck
out, but the Cubs are winnersof eleven to thirteen. Stroman was on
the hill nine and four two pointtwo eight ERA this season, and they're
(46:29):
about to lose three this week tothe Phillies. So I figured I'd give
them one more win before we goto Chicago and wipe up the floor with
them. But right now not lookinggood. But before the show it did.
They were up four nothing, nowdown six four. So second pick,
all right, second pick for me. I'm gonna go with my underdog
and again Orioles Mariners. You know, I you know, Seattle's a good
(46:51):
team. Worlds are a pretty goodteam too. That games at home for
Baltimore, Yes, and Baltimore isthe underdog again. It's like, that's
weird? Is weird? Now theyare a slight underdog. There's plus one
oh five, But I'm gonna takethe Orioles to win at home, finish
that series up and uh and takethem as my underdog and keep my fingers
cross. I know you took theunderdog. I took the under Okay eight
(47:12):
and a half in that game. The first two games they've gone over in
this series, so Odds is saying, uh, you know, Kirby Bradish.
Kirby's got three point two ninety Bradishthree point eight eight, I expoth,
I expect both teams to show upand pitch today for the first time
this weekend down there at Cannon Yardslast pick. All right, finally,
and I know you're gonna give mea hard time. And yeah, but
(47:32):
why wouldn't I? God, Iknew this was coming as soon as I
saw the line. As I sawthe line, why wouldn't I? I
know, I know, Mike,Why wouldn't I take the Phillies over the
Mets today? That's my favorite? At one nine White. I mean,
that's just smart. That's just smart. No, it's smart because I have
to root for you to get onepoint this week. I have to root
(47:53):
the home team. Brother. Unfair, Yeah, this is unfair. Okay,
all right, I'll give this oneto you. I'll give you a
point because I'm gonna I'm gonna havefour that the Rangers are my underdog.
Pick today up at New Yankee Stadiumto plus one hundred on the road.
Nathan Eovaldi Garrett Cole. What apitching matchup that's gonna be. But the
Yankees offense since Judge went down, absolutely is putrid. It stinks. The
(48:17):
Rangers can Rake and Garrett Cole issusceptible to the long ball. I expect
the Rangers to rake enough today towhere they win that game. Can you
believe it? Five pounds of whata sex to five and the wild things
(48:47):
are, bihead? Can you believeit? Can you believe it? Nope?
John Jansen just broke that kid's nextwith how loud the speakers were,
and he turned around and like, gave good job, John Way to grab
the attention. Here, I'm boutmy baseball brunt. We will force this
radio show on you. With theend I can or not shove it right
down your throat. Damn it,you're gonna eat this, all right?
(49:09):
So two things we found interesting fromthis past week in Major League Baseball.
There was a lot especially the listtwo nights. Yeah, Cincinnati Reds.
Yeah, man, special stuff.Yeah, give you your first one,
all right. Well, the firstone is focusing in on the Cincinnati Reds
because Elie dave La Cruz just continuesto marvel major League baseball and he's only
(49:29):
been up for two and a halfweeks at this point, and he has
done some amazing things. How aboutthis. Here's a complete list of every
twenty one year old player in thehistory of Major League Baseball to hit for
the cycle, Mike Trout, EllieDave la Cruz. Well hit for the
cycle with SENI am circumstances and steala base and steal a base, right,
But I can't imagine the list ismuch longer without the stolen base.
(49:51):
Yeah, yeah, probably not, probably not, but and steal a base.
But yeah, he's just been he'sjust been electric so far. And
the Cincinnati Reds are winning baseball gamesas well. Did you see what Joey
Vato said. He's it's like he'sa kid a game playing on he's reborn.
Yeah, he you know, he'sjust so excited to be around these
guys. So he's been pretty spectacularto watch so far. The third shortest
(50:13):
amount of games ever played for aguy that hit for the cycle and first
time and we thought our drought waslong with David Bell nineteen years, first
time that had read it hit forthe cycle since Eric Davis back in nineteen
eighty nine. Nineteen eighty nine, some pretty goat ball players have gone through
Cincinnati. Do you think he didit for David Bell? He said,
Look, I know you don't havethe record anymore in Philly, but I
I gotta do it. I gotyou that right there, I got your
(50:36):
skip. Yes, he was playingfor his manager. Speaking of that game,
Okay, the Braves, okay, collected fifteen plus hits, scored ten
plus runs, hit five plus homeruns, had a three home run,
inning, stole multiple bases, committedzero errors, struck out ten plus opposing
batters. No other team in MajorLeague Baseball history had did all that in
(50:57):
the same game. Prove it andthey lost, and they and they lost.
Wow, that's courtesy. It's agrand stats. That's a great line.
How did they figure that stuff out? Seriously? They they actually when
we think that we don't have lives, those people really don't have lives.
Well, thank goodness, where wewouldn't be able to do this second?
Right? All right? How aboutthis most five hit games in one season
(51:20):
by one Major League baseball hitter.Tie Cob had four, stand Usual had
four, Tony Gwyn had four, and Eatro Suzuki had four, and Luis
Rise has three five hit games thismonth this month, I mean four one
easily the best hitter in baseball,no doubt. I mean he needs to
(51:42):
do it for a longer period oftime than the last two seasons, but
working on becoming one of those guysthat we talked about twenty five years from
now. Say, I got towatch Lewis rys play. What a hitter
kind of thing. I mean,he's unbelievable. I'm at the cycle here,
Eli season. The only time I'veever seen that in person, This
one is Curtesy Sarah Lang's. TheAngels twenty one runs and the third and
fourth innings were tied for the mostin and the two winning span in a
(52:06):
game in Major League Baseball history. That is now tied with the June sixth,
eighteen ninety four Pittsburgh Pirates also didit in the third and fourth.
Only other team with even a twentyrun such span was the June twenty six,
