you know, hey, listen, short staffing on a holiday weekend, this
is what we have to do tomake things happen. I like the Thanks
Slash for producing today's program and livefrom the Ballpark, my mic co host,
my counterpart, the man with theplan, murfh how we filmed this
(01:19):
morning? Oh dude, I didn'tknow I was supposed to bring a plan.
I don't have a plan. Inever have a plan. I'm doing
well. Doing well yesterday here atthe ballpark was a lot of fun.
Obviously, you put up nineteen runson the board and the guys are energized
and the fans were energized. Whatwe have four home runs yesterday as well,
(01:42):
which is always a lot of fun. So but now I got to
go back and do it again, right, you know, you have to
win this series. It gets ateam like the Nationals. They have the
opportunity today to do that. Let'ssee them go out there and make it
happy, get the work done.Murf is live from the broadcast booth,
the radio broadcast booth at Bank Parktoday. So we might have some drop
ins. There might be some youknow friend and past friends of the program
(02:06):
might be stopping by. We mightget some bunny air action. If you
guys are checking us out from streamyard, we'll see what happens. You
guys, if you want to tunein and watch the show as it happens
live. Hopefully there's some good stuffto come. Normally I love it when
Fransky drops in because normally he hassomething good to say. Well, for
the record, I have slaid alarge bureau in front of the door and
locked it so that no one couldget in. But we'll see. They're
(02:29):
very resourceful guys, so we'll see. Well, we'll find out. Maybe
someone drops in mission impossible style throughthe ceiling towels up there. Yeah,
this first segment is brought to youby our good friends over at State Farm.
Here's the deal. When you couldbind State Farm home and auto insurance,
you save an average of eight hundredand eighty nine dollars. State Farm

All applicants subject to state farm underwritingrequirements. MERV. It's time to give
(03:15):
away some tickets here on the programyet again this week, and I figured
I'd touched back on to our ourour childhood, you know, I was,
I was having kicking some ideas aroundlast night as I was contemplating doing
the run sheet this morning. Andyou know, those formative years as a
sports fan tend to happen somewhere betweenmiddle school and high school. You know,
we have a lot of influences,a lot of heroes growing up,
(03:38):
and obviously we learned, we findout much later in life that the true
heroes are our mom, our dad, you know, who are providing for
us, and you know, policeofficers and firefighters and you know, emergency
personnel. But when we're children andwe're sports fans, it's it's our sports
heroes and those that make every singleday watching sports complete and absolutely jew So
(04:00):
I want to touch on on thoseangles there, you know, our middle
school or high school formative years.Murph. I know you got a top
five for me, but give meone of your five, all right,
Well, this actually is a littlebit before middle school. I kind of
ran the whole range because I figuredI was a kid until about twenty nine,
So I've got gone from age nineto twenty nine. Is that how
(04:23):
long your your education at Saint Joe'slast it? Well, yeah, pretty
much. It took me that longto get through. But hey, you
knows, as Larry likes to say, um, you don't you have to
grow up, but you can beimmature forever. And then that's that's something
that we all should strive for.So um so I that's a little bit
of a hint for folks at home. And then I've spanned a couple of
(04:45):
decades here, but I'll give youthe one when I was nine years old,
and he's really the first guy thatI remember really understanding, all right,
this guy is an athlete. Heplays baseball, and he's my favorite
player. And now he's actually afriend, and it's Greig Lazinski and he
was my easily my favorite player. We've talked about that before on the show.
(05:08):
Loved Greg, and I think partof it was because we had the
same name, and as a nineyear old you kind of think that's kind
of cool, right, But hehit bombs and uh, I just started
you know, when I was nine. It was nineteen eighty and they were
getting you know, they were obviouslyvery good over the last couple of years
in the seventies and then get tothe World Series and win it in eighty
and that really kind of solidified mylove for baseball and for the Phillies.
(05:30):
So Greg Lazinski was my favorite playerand one of my favorite people to this
day. So he's on my list. Yeah. And see this is all
encompassing, too, right, Imean it's it's across like multiple generations,
multiple you know, people, differentages, different age brackets, you know,
different sports. It doesn't have tobe baseball. But I'm gonna go
with my first favorite professional athlete ofall time, and that's Darren Dalton.
(05:55):
I love Dutch. He was like, you know, growing up like ninety
three, that team right there.I was seven years old that year and
that's where my first love began forbaseball and for the Phillies. Um,
and you know Dutch when he gottraded away in nineteen ninety seven to the
Marlins, I loved every bit ofhim winning that World Series there because he
was he was owed that it washe earned it. But when he went
(06:16):
into that clubhouse and and Dombrowski hassaid this over the years, Um and
Jim Leland that you know, theynever saw somebody walk into a clubhouse and
just it was like to be therefor like, you know, not even
a long period of time, butjust command the respect and and sit there
and say to everybody, hey, listen, there's too much talent here.
We are better than this. Andthen they go on to win the World
Series in Game seven against the ClevelandIndians. Uh, what a what a
(06:41):
phenomenal you know, person athlete.Um. You know, it's a shame
what happened with him, with youknow, with the brain tumors. But
I love Dutch. He was hewas the he was the man growing up
before Chase Utley officially became the man. Yeah. Jim Eiseneright tells a great
story because, you know, hewas also down with the Marlins at the
same time that Dutch was, andobviously here with the Phillies at the same
(07:01):
time as well. And he tellsthe story that Dutch was there about three
or four days and he called ateam meeting and he kind of said what
you just said to the entire team, guys. You know, I look
around this room. There's a tonof talent in here, but what the
heck are you doing? And youknow, to be able to do that
when you walk into a major leagueclubhouse and you're there for four days,
(07:24):
that is some kind of leadership anduh and it worked and they went on
to win the World Series. Soyeah, pretty impressive. Absolutely, Slash,
you got one for me over there. Yeah, So are we sticking
just a baseball or is it allall right? Then I'm gonna have to
go with my man weapon X BrianDawkins always you know, I know it's
(07:47):
low hanging fruit. He's one ofthe best Eagles of all time, but
growing up, man, I alwayswanted to be like him and play like
him. Even of osis backyard football. No one got hurt though. That's
a good one. Yeah, thatcertainly does not fall under my childhood.
I covered Brian, so I couldn'tput him on my list, but it's
(08:09):
certainly a good one. Yeah. The closest thing to anybody really actually getting
her was Algie Crumpler, which isstill the greatest hit I've ever seen in
my life. In order to winthose tickets, you must answer in the
comments section on the Green Legion RadioYouTube channel. The Green Legion Facebook page
or our Twitter handle at Green Legion, our collective favorite answer will win.
At the beginning of this final segment, Murv, we're getting out of the
box now, let's talk some fightingfills. And while we're doing it,
(08:33):
we might as well break some newshere for those that haven't seen it.
Infielder Cody Clemens has been optioned downthe Triple A unfortunate. You know,
Cody has played pretty well for usover the last couple months without you know,
in the absence of Rheese Hoskins andthe and the newly added back to
the roster now Derek Hall, Who'sgoing to be batting in the eight hole
today. That's a pretty deep lineup. When Derek Hall is bat in eight.
(08:56):
You know last year he was battingclean up when Bryce Harper went down
and he was DH And for us, that right there kind of gives me
like the idea that we have twoclean up hitters in this lineup. Now,
what do you what are your thoughtson that one? Murph, Yeah,
absolutely, I mean we all knowwhat Derek Hall can do, and
certainly it's good to see him backup here at the big leagues. Cody
Clemmens I mean you have to tipyour cap to the way he played.
(09:18):
I got an opportunity up here andreally took advantage of it. Unfortunately,
you know, at this time ofthe year often it's a numbers game.
I know it was a difficult decisionfor the organization to decide to go ahead
and do this. Uh, Codyis a very popular guy in the clubhouse,
but so Stark. So you knowhe's gonna come right up here and
he's gonna be, you know, immediately right back in the mix. And
(09:41):
they need power in this lineup. You know, you put yesterday aside where
they got the four home runs, but they do need power. Obviously Haul
can provide that for you. Andto your point, yeah, he's batting
eighth in the lineup tonight or today, and it's it just goes to show
you just how much off defensive powerthis lineup, hatch. And we saw
(10:01):
it yesterday again with the nineteen runs. They just need to see it a
little bit more consistent. Yeah. And so also I think this is a
you know, a trial period forDerek Call to prove that he should be
the first baseman moving forward. Iknow Bryce Harper is slated to probably play
first base at some point along theline. But you know, hey,
if Derek Hall can play the positionand he can hit, you know,
(10:24):
this will allow them to use theirassets in other ways that you know,
like the farm pieces or you knowwhat they're looking to trade away as far
as prospects are concerned. I knowwe've been talking about it, and you
know a lot of people around Philadelphiaare thinking about it. Bryce Harper goes
to first base, and you canjust move Schwarber rate into the DH role
for the rest of the year, and then you're shopping for a left fielder.
But you know, this team rightnow, if they can get themselves
(10:46):
together, if you know, TreyTurner can put himself off the mat a
little bit here. I know he'sbeen hitting better lately, but it's still
not Trey Turner yet. You know, Schwarber is inching closer to the Mendoza
line. We're coming around like oneninety now. He's got over twenty home
runs. Bom had two home runsyesterday. Uh. You know, Bryson
Stei has been hovering around three hundred, and Nick Castiana's has been you know,
incredible, and eventually, at somepoint Bryce Harper is going to hit
(11:07):
another home run in this lineup. But you know, instead of maybe having
to think about you know, atsome point along the line, you know,
maybe they can mix and match Haulat first base and you know,
and and Bryce Harper at first base, and they can you know, co
DH there. Maybe you get anoutfield piece that can go and play in
left field. Um. You know, if haulk and sit on the bench
against a tough lefty uh and Schwerbergyou know, could be the DH that
(11:30):
day. However, they feel thatthey can need to put it together,
but they need to find some thingsout over the next few weeks. Whether
they're gonna need to add at firstbase or if they're gonna add out in
left field. Certainly they're gonna needto add some starting pitching depth somewhere along
the line. Yeah, you know, I think a lot of these decisions
are um. You know, firstof all, you have to wait to
(11:50):
see what's available out there and ifthat particular player fits what your needs are.
I know there's a lot of talkabout, you know, bringing in
a left field I'm not I'm notexactly sure that that's what they'll do.
Um. You know, defensively,if you have Harper playing first base.
Then you're not gonna have Schwarber outa left field and Christian Pace is as
(12:13):
good of a left fielder as you'regonna find defensively. I mean, you're
not gonna go out and find someonea whole lot better than Christin Poce defensively.
And you also have Brandon Marshtick willbe able to play left field as
well, if you wanted to makethat move on different nights. So to
me, I think it really isstill up in the air. Obviously,
(12:33):
pitching is king. If you cango out and find someone that you think
makes your rotation better, um,then I think you go out and do
that. But that said, theidea that someone like that might be available
is you know it, we'll see, you know, everybody needs pitching,
and how much is it cost too? Yeah, and and and that's the
(12:54):
thing. So I do not thinkthey're going to mortgage their future to find
a fifth starter. I would besurprised if they did that. And look,
let's let's keep our fingers across thatChristopher Sanchez can continue to to do
what he's been doing, and thenhopefully he's a bridge to Andrew Painter,
who may be late in the seasonmiddle of August September can come in and
(13:18):
and you know, kind of fillthat back end of the rotation spot.
If he's healthy, that would beterrific. Can't have any broadcasts we've done
from ex Afinity, and we don'tget as much you know, like routiness
as what we're getting into background rightnow, in an empty citizen's bag park,
completely empty, there are three peopleover here, probably about a hundred
(13:39):
yards away from me, and theyare so loud it's unbelievable. Three teenage
girls and I don't know who they'rescreaming. They're screaming for Price. They're
screaming for you field. They're screamingfrom you. They're not They're screaming at
Price's having a catch down on thefield right now. Yes, so I
think they've run out of steam.Let's sounds great, somber. Over the
(14:03):
course of the last week, thePhillies have been five and one, nice
rebound after the you know, thekind of the rough stretch that they had
there. Um, you know, the two losses against the Braves, and
then hey, listen, the Mets. Did they gift wrap a couple wins
for us last weekend? Sure thingI'll take it all day long, especially
that meltdown in the eighth inning, which was wonderful. Um. You know,
(14:24):
as the Mets continue to slide inthe National League East and in the
wild card standings, we're gonna talkabout the Mets and the Padres coming up
on our second segment, as wellas uh Bobby Bonia to day being yesterday.
But the Phillies now or six gamesabove five hundred, they're eleven games
behind the scorching White Hot Braves. It's insane how well the Phillies have played
over the last month and they've madeup no ground on the Braves at all,
(14:46):
very little. Now against the Marlins, they're behind the Marlins three um,
you know, the three games rightnow in the in the in the
wild card race for the top wildcardand for second place in National Leagues,
and they're right behind the Dodgers andthe Giants did race. At least,
we've got three months left in theseason. We've got plenty of time.
The Phillies have found their footing. They're back on the right track, and
(15:07):
they've done it against teams that theyshould be doing it against. This next
week against the Rays and the Marlinsin Florida. It's gonna be a tough
week going into the All Star Break, going up against those two teams,
especially with how well the Marlins haveplayed, No doubt about it, it
is gonna be a tough week.I mean, obviously not looking past this
(15:28):
afternoon. Take care of business, win this series, beat the Nationals,
do what you need to do here. But then yeah, you turn your
focus to a race team that hasbeen one of the best teams, if
not the best team in baseball allseason long. And then the Marlins,
the one team you know that's rightahead of you in the National League East
standing. So it's a big weekfor the Phillies. And I feel like
we say that a lot. Wehave said it a lot over the last
(15:50):
couple of weeks, but just wasirrelevant, which is awesome, exactly right,
You're exactly right. It means thatthese games matter. We are,
what eighty two game games into theseason, so officially into the second half
of the season, and the Philshave some work to do still, but
I think you said it right. They've kind of found their footing and hopefully
(16:11):
they can keep it and go intothe All Star Break strong. You'll remember
last year they went down to Miamiright leading into the All Star Game and
won all three. If I'm notmistaken, as they headed into maybe all
three or two, it was definitelytwo or three. Yeah, yeah,
I think it was all three, but but I'd have to check that.
But anyway, you know, hopefullythey could do something similar this year.
(16:33):
It makes you feel good with theway that they've been playing on the road
as of late. I mean, they started out the season thirteen and twenty
three on the road. They're nowon a nine game heater on the road,
which is their longest winning streak onthe road since May of nineteen eighty
four. Listen, I know thestarting pitching has been great, you know,
and winning those last three against theDiamondbacks, you know, and then
(16:53):
going into Hope, Oakland and sweepingthem, and now going the Cubs and
return into favor. Last year theCubs win six and against us, we
took We've taken care of business againstthem this year five and one. But
man, I knew the starting pitchhas been great and the bats have been
timely. But is there something thatthey're doing different on the road that can
attribute to the success lately of gettingthem? Now one game under five hundred
(17:15):
on the road, which you know, great baseball teams play five hundred baseball
on the road and take you know, obviously you want to have a winning
record, um, you know, the decent winning record. You know,
you're not gonna say, hey,one game over five hundreds of winning record
at home and you're gonna make theplayoffs. But you know, take care
of your business on the road. That's what they've been doing over the last
month. Yeah, and I don'tthink they're doing anything differently. I mean,
(17:38):
short of the uh, the superstitionthat was that was kind of hanging
around for a little while where theyweren't taking VP out on the field,
whether it be home or on theroad. You know, they kind of
kept that going because they kept winningand so they didn't want to mess with
that. They've they've now since startedtaking VP on the field again from time
to time. But other than that, no, I us think they're playing
(18:00):
better baseball. I mean, acthe said it a million times. The
baseball season is a marathon. Itis so long. It's one hundred and
sixty two games. You know, you could lose thirty in a row and
then still make the postseason. Becauseyou're gonna lose sixty that you know,
during the season regardless, you knowthat, well, if they get their
(18:25):
act together, but yeah, no, probably not. But the point is
you just you just have to keeplooking forward. Looking back doesn't do you
any good looking forward. And Ithink this team, you know, the
veteran guys on this team do areally good job with that. I think
the coaching staff, led by RobThompson does a really good job at that.
Like you know what, flush it, it's over. You know,
(18:49):
Friday night you score one run.Frustrating night, one for eight with runners
in scoring position. You waste agood outing from your number five starter.
But they get over it quickly andthey come back out the next day and
they get the job done. Notevery team. I think this team learned
(19:10):
that last are continuing it this yearreal quick. Before we go to break.
The Phillies had the man on themound today to win this series.
You know, Ranger Suarez has beenphenomenalist this courtesy of Crossing Broads Bob Wankle.
Over his last six star forty inningspitch twenty nine hits, six earned,
ten walks, thirty seven strikeouts,a one point three five array and
(19:30):
a point nine to seventy five whip. Pretty fantastic. Ranger. Suarez is
just the guy that you want tosee on the hill today to win this
series in Washington before you go downto Florida. And if you could provide
us an update, I wasn't priviedbecause everything that's going on on Twitter right
now with these rate limits and allthat crap, I haven't been able to
see what's what exactly is going onwith Zach Wheeler Removed yesterday after five innings,
(19:52):
eighty five pitches. I know thePhillies had a huge lead. Was
that just more precautionary kind of givenhimself avrizone way after giving up three runs
in the the ending prior? Ohyeah, absolutely. That's the only reason
he came out of yesterday's game,UM is because they had a at that
point, yeah, fifteen run leadat that point. Uh, stave some
bullets, you know, live livefor another day kind of thing for Zach
(20:15):
Wheeler. UM, you know, get some guys that haven't pitched in the
bullpen, Dylan Kobe, Jeff Hoffman, get them some work as well.
So for all those reasons, that'swhy he left the game. UM had
the game been much tighter. ZachWheeler pitches into the sixth seventh probably um,
you know, probably those two moreinnings in that game. Uh,
if you know, if they neededhim too. But but yeah, that's
(20:37):
the only reason he left. Okay, and then your your thoughts on range
of Swarres in this heater that he'son. It's been awesome to watch.
I mean you really at this pointfeel so comfortable handing the baldiver injur squars
and saying, hey, go getus a win. Right. It just
feels like every time out there,he's in complete control. And um,
(21:00):
it's you know, if if Zachand Aaron and and Taiwan could continue,
you know, to be solid likethey have been, and you know you
have Ranger doing what he's doing thisrotation, Um, it's going to be
it's going to be the reason thatthey win and get into the postseason if
they can continue to do what they'redoing right now. Um, we thought
(21:22):
this offense was going to be thecatalyst, and it still might be,
but right now, this starting pitching, this rotation, I think you can
put it up against virtually anyone's inbaseball and you'd feel pretty good about about
what you've got so um it's it'sawesome. And yeah, coming in to
win a series on a Sunday dayafternoon in front of their home crowd.
(21:45):
Yeah, put Ranger Swarz on themount for me and uh and I'm feeling
good. Ranger swarrez is June remindsme a lot of Cliff Lea's June in
twenty eleven. It's just not thera isn't quite there. I think the
Cliffs was like point four. Butthe performances and the clutch starts that he's
given us, you know, it'spretty probably replicated right there. But hey,
(22:07):
don't hang out alone in the mankfor baseball this season. Try hanging
out at Cheerleaders with sexy entertainers, four dollars, domestic beers, jamison specials,
and awesome game day experiences all seasonlong. That's right, Stop in,
before, during, or after thegame, not only to see your
favorite entertainers, but also your chanceto have the best game day experience.
Cheerleaders open daily from noon until twoam. Coming up on the other side,
(22:29):
we're gonna talk about a couple ofteams that are a little bit of
a mess right now. Between theNew York Mets and San Diego Padres.
And how much money is Bobby Boniacollecting every July first until he's seventy two
years old. We'll touch on thatright here. I want to two point

hate dirty windows dot com. That'swe hate dirty Windows dot com. Murph,
I want some injury updates here, sor Anthony Dominguez, Andrew Painter,
(24:02):
Noah Song. What do you gotfor me on those three pitchers? Well,
Sir Anthony is making progress, whichI think is uh, probably the
most important right now. So todayhe is supposed to do what they call
a touch and feel bullpen, whichI you know, he's gonna try to
(24:22):
throw all those pitches and you know, kind of maybe doing up and down
to give himself a little bit ofa game kind of feel. And if
that goes well, they do anticipatethat on this coming road trip they'll throw
an actual bullpen, which is thenext step before he would go out on
a react. That'll probably throw acouple bullpens before he goes out on a
rehab. At this point, Idon't think we see Sir Anthony until after
(24:45):
the break, but probably Yeah, and probably right after the break he'll be
ready to go, So that's goodnews. Andrew Painter continues to do his
work down in Florida, just bullpensevery other I do not think he's thrown
more than thirty pitches in a bullpenyet, but I do think the next
step is for him to increase thatto forty five. But he is throwing
(25:07):
all his pitches, no complaints inthe elbow, so he's continuing to get
stronger. They'll stretch him out alittle bit more, a little bit more,
but they're gonna take it very slowwith Andrew Painters, so we got
to be patient. I don't thinkwe're gonna see him anytime soon up here.
Whether or not he gets into somegame action down there remains to be
seen it. And Noah Song,I didn't check his line from last night,
(25:30):
to be honest with you, buthe did pitch one inning in Clearwater
last night. It's the second timehe has pitched one inning in a game
down in Clearwater. The first timehe had a one two three inning with
I think I believe one strikeout. So you know, this is a guy
that hasn't pitched in a couple ofyears. In competitive situations. So just
getting him out there on the fieldand facing a live hitters is a win.
(25:51):
And they have about twenty five moredays to figure out what they're going
to do with No a Song beforethey would have to offer him back.
I was going to say, becausehe's a Rule five pick, so this
right now is considered a rehab assignmentwith him building himself up. And now
after twenty five days, they haveto make a decision whether to put him
on the active roster or they haveto offer him back to the team where
(26:14):
he was selected from. Isn't thatcorrect? That's correct, Yeah, yep,
that's exactly right. So, um, you know, they still have
a couple of weeks and they'll they'llput him through the paces and we'll see
what he can do. And thenif they believe he's a piece that might
be able to help them not onlythis season but in the future, then
perhaps we see him up here aspart of the active roster. If not,
(26:36):
then yeah, he's going to haveto be offered back. It's incredible
the amount of arms that the Phillieshave added to this bullpen over the last
few years. When when they addedin Dave Dombrowski, to the front office
as President of Baseball Operations. Oneof the things that had one of the
stigmas about Dave Dombrowski was the factthat he never really had like a like
a great bullpen. Like it wasn'tsomething that that he cared much for in
every stop along the way here weare. I mean, this is something
(27:00):
that Phillies fans and you know,God media members alike, we've been saying
for the last ten plush years reallyfor me, ever since we lost that
NLCS to the Giants in twenty ten, they needed more electric arms in the
back end of their bullpen, andand they have them. I mean,
look, they don't have serr AnthonyDominguez right now. And you've got guys
that come out Craig Kimbrell, GregorRossolo, Jose Alvarado, Junior Marte,
(27:26):
even even Hoffman. I mean, like these guys are coming out and then
and they're throwing you know five ninetysix, ninety seven, ninety eight,
you know in Soto and Alvarado's caseto throwing triple digits. Uh. And
then you know you got guys therecoming out right now like Andrew Vasquez.
I mean that guy throws nothing butstrikes. But the bullpen has been phenomenal
this season for the Phillies. Itreally has. And you know, I
(27:48):
think the game has changed, obviouslyin the last ten years or so,
where bullpens had become such an importantpart of championship teams. And I don't
think it was always like it certainlyneeded good arms in the back of the
bullpen, but it was really moreabout starting pitching, you know, back
fifteen twenty years ago. Nowadays, teams that have great bullpens or the teams
(28:10):
to go deep in in the postseasonand win championships. And I think,
you know, Dave Dombrowski, beingthe baseball guy that he is, has
adapted to that and realize how importantit is and in a manner of what
a year and a half has wellmaybe two years, has rebuilt this bullpen
into what has is one of thebetter ones in all of the National League.
(28:32):
So yeah, it's it's good tosee they got some some electric arms
out there. And you mentioned AndrewBasquez. I had him on the postcard
the pregame show a couple of weeksago, and we were joking, I
said, you know, you gotall these guys that throw you know,
ninety five to one hundred every timeout, and then he comes out and
he's more in the eighty nine toninety two kind of range, and he
(28:52):
goes, yeah, that's that's whyI'm affected because they see, you know,
all they see is gas and thenI come out and not thrown nearly
as hard, but he is thrownstrikes and he's able to be very effective.
So yeah, it works. It'sbeen great so far. I got
one week left until the All Starbreak here now. I believe today is
the day where they're going to announcethe remaining members of the National League in
(29:15):
American League All Star teams, Sotoday should be the day. I know
it's a log jam in the outfieldin the National League. A lot of
players are having great seasons, butthe Phillies should be represented by Nick Castianos
in the season that's he has giventhem so far. He is the team
MVP offensively for this lineup so farthis year. I would be extremely disappointed
(29:37):
not to see Nick in Seattle. He has earned it, you know,
with all this media scrutiny that hewent through last year to come out and
have the season that he's had throughthe first three months of this year.
It is well deserved to see NickCastianos in Seattle next you know, next
week for the for the All StarGame and representing the National League in the
Philadelphia Phillies. Yeah, and andI think that's what we will see.
(30:00):
I'd be surprised if Vick didn't makethe team. I know, you know,
outfield is a tough position to makeas an All Star just because there's
so many good outfielders out there. But no, to your point, Nick
has been terrific all season long, and he's a deserving All Star this year
for sure, and really the mostdeserving Philly to make feel And that's not
(30:22):
always how it works, but youknow, hopefully it does work this year
in that regard. You know,Rob Thompson's going to be the manager of
the National League team. The coachingstaff is headed to Seattle. He would
think there'd be a little bit ofinfluence. You know, he doesn't get
to pick anybody, but he wouldthink that if the folks that are making
those selections might say, hey,Skip, you know, what do you
(30:44):
think in is it Nick? AndI think Rob would probably say yeah,
at this point, Nick is probablythe most deserving and who knows the Phillies
might get you know, more thanone headed out there to Seattle. I
mean, I think about Alvarado's certainlygot a shot. Craik Kimberrell's got a
shot to be on the All Starteam. Offensively, yeah, prison stot
too, and all of these guyshave an opportunity or a chance to be
(31:07):
there. But I do think Nick'sprobably the most deserted. Absolutely all right,
So let's get around the league herefor the next five to six minutes
before we head into our second break. I crunched these numbers the other day.
What in the world is going onin San Diego this season? Since
advancing to the NLCS last year againstthe Phillies, they already combine and this
is including them losing in five inthat series, they are combined thirty nine
(31:27):
and forty nine since that moment intime. Since Game one of the NLCS,
they are eleven and a half gamesout of first place in the National
League West and eight games out ofthe final wild card spot in the National
League. What is going on withthe Padres and all of that talent that
they have on that roster? Yeah, you know, I don't know.
I don't have an answer. Imean, we've broke the Padres, which
(31:48):
is kind of cool. And yeah, you know, we just destroy squads
we we couldn't break. We couldn'tbreak the braves. Well, we might
of help breaking the braves. They'repretty thumb but yeah, you know,
it just goes to show you that, first of all, you know,
just having an expensive roster does notnecessarily mean you're going to win. You
(32:13):
have to have we're diving well,I mean, but but the Padres are
as equally. Uh, you know, when you look at the Padres and
the Mets, they are so similarin terms of the disappointment with the amount
of money that they have put intotheir rosters and where they are right now.
Now, look, there's still ahalf to season, and there is
(32:34):
a ton of talent on both ofthose teams, and so I hesitate to
put the death knelt on them quiteyet. However, they have a lot
of work to do and a lotof teams to jump over if they're going
to get back to this wild cardrace. So it'll be interesting to say.
I wish I had an answer asto what the Padres issue is.
It's just, you know it,Baseball's one of those games. It's not
(32:59):
like football, and it's not youcould almost chalk up the four top teams
in the NFL every year and theNBA and probably be well, maybe not
the NHL as much, but butbaseball, it's just there's always teams that
you think you're gonna be here andare here, and that you think you're
gonna be down here and are uphere. So um, it's it's remarkable
(33:21):
to watch. And uh, itwill be the first team that comes in
after the break here in Philadelphia,so hopefully they stayed down for a little
while. Did you select the Metsto make the playoffs and your picks this
year? I think I believe Idid. Ye, I believe you did,
and I said no, I saidno. And man at rotation,
they're like twenty six in baseball,uh this season, so you know,
(33:44):
eighteen and a half. They wentinto June three and a half behind the
Braves. They're eighteen and a halfgames out of first place now and then
National League's they're nine games out ofthe final wildcard spot. And this right
here, this is baffling. Rightnow, the A's forty million dollars payroll
while the Mets have a Major Leaguebaseball record setting three hundred and sixty four
(34:06):
million dollars pay roll in twenty twentythree. The A's went nine to sixteen
in June, while the Mets wentseven and nineteen. Justin Verlanders said this
week quote, I don't think anyonesaw this coming. Chris Sack of Greenleager
Radio and Budlight Baseball Brunch all thiscoming. Did you really see this much
of a demise for them? Imean, average age if you're starting pitching
(34:29):
staff was seventy three coming into theseason. I mean, I did see,
you know, the demise of Verlander. Now, Scherzer against the Phillies
is a different animal, different beast, but he hasn't been that great against
other teams. But it's incredible tosee what the Mets have been, what
kind of mess they've been this season, especially the eighth inning meltdown that they
(34:49):
had against the Phillis last Sunday.Yeah, and you know, they did
lose a huge part of their teamgoing into the season, losing Edwin Diaz.
You know, he was a guythat shortened games for them and they
obviously miss him tremendously. But itis it's remarkable because you think about Peter
Alonzo and the season. He's havinga very good season, and it's just
the rest of them can't get theiract together, or we can't consistently get
(35:14):
their act together. So it's,uh, it's must be very frustrating if
you're a Mets fan. But I'lltell you what, it's extremely entertaining from
my season. So we're getting ina preview right now of today's national anthem
singer. She sounds she sounds reallygood. So so let me tell you.
It is Miss Team USA that issinging a national anthem today and she's
(35:37):
being accompanied by Miss America on theviolin. So they're both down on the
field of right now rehearsing. Yeahand uh yeah. So it's a little
star power bringing the anthem to us. I love it. Maybe they were
the ones beautiful for Maybe they werethe ones that were screaming at Price earlier.
No, no, no, realquick before he had to break.
(36:00):
I'd like to wish everybody a happybelated Bobby Bonia Day from the bond Light
Baseball Brunch crew and everybody from Greenleyg Radio. The sixty year old Bonia
collected another one point one nine millionfrom the Mets yesterday and has another twelve
years left the payments coming his way, which is another fourteen point three million.
(36:20):
For twenty thirty five. The Metsturned a five point nine retain salary
five point nine million retain salary inthe twenty nine point eight million over twenty
five years. A quarter in aspot track on Twitter, incredible, he's
making five hundred thousand from the Oriolesevery July first two murs, Hey,
you know what, I wish Ihad his agent. You know, good
(36:43):
for Bobby Bonilla. You know,it's one of those stories that you know,
comes up every year and we allreact to it at some level.
And my take on that is goodfor Bobby Bania. You know, I
don't know Bobby never. I don'tthink I've ever had an opportunity to talk
to him. But he he madehimself a good deal. He was smart,
(37:07):
and you know what, let's spreadthis out and uh, we're gonna
do We're gonna do it the game, but let's spread it out and uh
and and you know, keep mein a pension of a million to the
million two or whatever it is.Every year. I'm bustling. You know,
I wish I wish I had hisage. See This is what you
get. You don't get this anywhereelse on any other program in the Delaware
(37:30):
Valley when it comes to baseball talk. This is why we're your pre eminent
baseball source. You get in stadiumreactions such as this with Murph being on
the broadcast, and I got Slashstanding up and took his hat off.
He's got his hand over his heart. You know, I'm just happy that
Slash is not a communist. Ifyou know, and and I and I
(37:51):
also should be doing the same thing. We often, you know, we
have the rehearsal here every day. They rehearse at this time every day.
Um, and most often it's youknow, everyone knows it's rehearsal and put
two job done down here. Yeah, you will certainly pay the respects come,
(38:17):
get no doubt about it. Igotta make sure I was gonna take
off my hat, but I don'tthink anybody wants that glare coming off my
head. But hey, listen, the Green Legion. We're here to tell
you it's time to make your reservationsfor another amazing Eagle season. Head to

Murf made up some ground in ourstandings last week and I feel dirty for
(39:23):
it. That's why I'm going tohave to try and make a rebound today

pitched really well. Up A rangerswears on the mound today I'd be two
(40:12):
hundred and forty seventh birthday to America. As we get the trumpets right now
heading on sounds great, that's missthat's Miss America that's playing that. Nope,
no, that this is a trumpet. Noationals in another general because yeah,
yeah, God, bust in Americaall right, hitting all the tryouts
here right now on bud Life BaseballBrunch, which all it out. Hey,
(40:37):
it is summertime, summers in fullswing. Make sure you guys get

set amongst a casually sophisticated bar,a cozy ala carte dining room, and
(40:57):
the only mellow lounge in Townsend. Then let make sure you guys check them

Or call them at six zero ninetwo six three seventy two nine.
That's six zero nine two six threeseventy two nine for all your reservation,
dining or entertainment question the questions. The Luvedlam Hotel your new oasis in Seisle
(41:20):
City. All right, let's goahead, let's get to it. Let's
get these tickets away for the PhilliesGiants on August twenty first. And this
the topic this week is your favoriteathlete growing up as a kid, or
in merse case, a twenty nineyear old kid when he was when he
was still hanging out doing beer bongsdown and at Saint Joe's. Tell yeah,
(41:44):
good stuff. So we gave,we gave our picks earlier. Murph
is gonna give us the remaining portionof his top five. All right,
so I gave you Greg ol Zinskialready. He was my favorite player growing
up starting at about nine years old. When Greg left the Phillies, the
guy that came into replace him becamemy favorite player. And that happens to
be another friend of mine now, which is kind of remarkable. Gary Matthews,
(42:07):
the Sarge, when he came inin eighty three and was such a
big part of that team that wentto the World Series. I just loved
the way he played. I lovedhis uh, his bravado and his attitude.
And so Gary Matthews was the nextguy after Lesinski for me, and
so they're both on my list.Sarge and I was working up. Sarge
is one of the coolest dudes, one of the coolest guys. I mean,
(42:30):
like he let us wear his hisWorld Series ring. Um, you
know, god, this is probablyabout sevent eight years ago now. We
were playing Giant Jenga with him andMilt Thompson over next twenty Live. Great
guy, great dude. Loved himas a broadcaster too. He was he
was always always, always a joy, always a pleasure, and he just
loved that draw. Well well youknow, it's just a great stuff with
(42:51):
him, so much fun to bearound, all right. So they're my
two baseball guys on my top five, and I have two football guys and
now I'll go back to now yearold Murph. And my favorite Eagle was
Ron Jorski. I just I lovedRon. I went to training camp with
my uncle and my cousin I believebefore the eighty season, or maybe it
(43:12):
was right after the eighty season, and I got his autograph on on the
jersey I was wearing, which washis jersey, and I'll never forget that.
And uh, you know, Ronobviously still very much a big part
of the sports community here in town, and I've had the opportunity to be
with him many many times. AndI hosted his golf tournament for years.
Um. They the Ron Jorski CelebrityChallenge. I was the host of that
(43:35):
on television. So I got toknow Ron. Uh and you know as
an adult as well. But Ronwas one of my favorite players growing up.
And uh, and you know, quarterback of here. There's a trend
in this week's show. It's peoplethat you've befriended later on your life.
Yeah, well not the next two. So okay, that trend is now
over, um because the next guywas Randall Cunningham. So Randall was obviously
(44:00):
much after Ron and I was inhigh school at the time and then college
when Randall was playing, and uh, just you know, the ultimate weapon,
right, I just loved to watchhim play. The Eagles were pretty
good for the first time in along time when he was there. If
he hadn't gotten hurt that one season, I guess that was ninety one.
(44:21):
If he hadn't got hurt ninety one, there's a chance that they get to
the super Bowl that year. SoRandal Cunningham and I will tell you that
when I was a senior in highschool, somehow, some way, I
did not have a limousine for mysenior prom and we had my buddy had
a connection through his mom with RandalCunningham, actually with Randald Cunningham's limo driver,
(44:45):
and Randal gave us his limousine forthe night. Wow and called us,
called us in the limousine, youknow, and phone in there.
Yeah, and he was like, hey, I just wanted to tell you
guys, have a great time. But so you know that that was kind
of cool as well. But Ilove Randall before that, and he just
kind of showed what kind of guyhe was as well by helping out a
(45:05):
bunch of kids around from time.So and then finally, uh, this
is the one that goes into myadult years. But my favorite athlete over
the last twenty years has been TigerWoods and I just you know, I
was just getting into golf when heburst onto the scene and watching Tiger play,
you know, if it was likewatching Jordan play, it was like,
(45:28):
you know, watching the greatest playerof more than a generation, one
of the best to ever play atSo Tiger, to me, it's always
going to be on my list becausewhat he did for the game of golf
and what he did for my lovefor the game of golf is off the
chart. So Tiger is on mylist. It's nothing like Tiger wearing red
on Sundays on them for a meeting. Yeah, it was incredible to this
(45:52):
day. Yeah, to this day, still no doubt about it. All
right, So let's run down thelist here. We've got a nice hefty
list this week, all right,So here we go, Tony Taylor,
Michael jack Schmidt, Kurt Schilling,Scottie Pippen, bo Jackson, Mia hamm
(46:12):
Ken Griefe Junior, Larry Boa,Nolan, Ryan, Alan Iverson, Randall,
Kobe, Eric Lyn Dross, MarkSpitz Wow, well list, yeah,
and we had a couple others,a couple always said Dutch and b
Doc but obviously we've already we've alreadyexpunged on them. So this is the
list that we're going off of rightnow. Who do you who are you
(46:35):
thinking? Who are you leaning on? But there are so many that you
could pick from Mill's list, Butmy decisions already made up because someone named
one that was on my list, and that's Randald Cunningham. So I'm gonna
have to go with Brandon, allright. So for me, I'm gonna
have to go Eric lynd Ross.Eric lynd Ross is the reason why I'd
love the Flyers, um, youknow. And then it carried on through
Simone Gangye and Claude Grue and andnow you know, hey, Mishcoff,
(47:00):
I saw you had, you know, Oliver bunk bunk on with you yesterday.
So that that's good stuff. Ilove seeing that. So I go
Lynn Dross, Murf goes Randall,You're the tiebreaker. I know where this
is going. Gone Randall. Iknew he would go wrong. He really
he went round. He's not ahockey guy. If I would have said
AI, he probably would have said, AI, Yeah, no doubt about
(47:22):
it. Yeah, so yeah,I probably right up there for me.
So congratulations Sean Henderson. I don'thave to go far to get your email
addressed. It was Sean you sentme the list. All right, So
let's get to our pick for Sunday'saction today. I'm gonna I'm gonna downward
spiral right now. The last fewweeks, I've gone down into every single
week. Um, you know,I got lucky on that under last week
(47:45):
eight and a half for the Marinersand the Orioles, while Murph went to
him one last week. And it'snot just like he got two points.
He hit his underdog, which wewere laughing about, dour and break because
the over under you were leaning sayingthat that under seven look too to be
true. I said it was probablygonna be a one nothing game. Wound
up being a two nothing Marlins victoryover the Pirates. But hey, nonetheless,
(48:06):
in the standings, we're tied eighteento twelve right now. But I
still have a point and a halfon you. As I have twenty three,
you have twenty one and a half. Can Murph overtake the lead this
week? Murph, give me yourfirst pick. I'm just reeling you in.
I'm just reeling you got cocky.I'm reeling hey man, we got
we got we got the Marlins overthe next week. So yeah, reel
me in as we're reel in thefish. There you go. All right.
(48:28):
So I've gotta start with my underdog, and I'm gonna take It's the
Orioles and the Twins playing today, and I think and the Oils are at
home, and I think most peoplewould think maybe the Orioles would be favorite
in this They're not. Twins arefavorite. Sonny Grass won the first yeah,
twin, Yeah, I know, but Twins. Twins won the first
two games. It's hard to sweepthe team, especially at home getaway day
(48:51):
for the Twins. Oriols are stayingpoot. So the Orioles are plus one
oh five. I'm taking the Oriolesas the Orioles also haven't scored in this
series. They lost seven nothing andone nothing back to back days, and
swerving swerving Cole Irvin is pitching forthe for the Orioles today. I'm gonna
go with my favorite to start out. I'm gonna take the Dodgers minus one
ninety five at Kansas City Tony Gonslinversus Brady Singer, who's probably one of
(49:14):
the worst starting pitchers in Major LeagueBaseball. I'm gonna take the Dodgers to
take down the Kansas City rules inKansas City today. Give me your second
pick. I can't believe that's onlyone ninety five, to be honest,
all right, I'm waiting for yourfavorite. Last week, you had an
one ninety with the Phillies. Allright, I'm going one nine five two.
Just one makes a little bit moresense. Toronto over the Red Sox.
(49:37):
The Red Sox are looking for asweep as well. They've won the
first two games in this one,but Toronto is the favorite this afternoon.
Gossman is pitching for the Blue Jays, and I think that's a big reason
why. So they're one minus oneninety five, but I'm taking the Blue
Jays to be the reds All right, sounds great. My underdog for this
week is going to be the Raiseplus one ten at Seattle. Now I
(49:58):
can understand the reason why being underdogs, you know, but you know they
split the first two in the series. Luis Castillo is pitching today for Seattle,
which is all the reason why Whyis they just a minus one thirty.
That should be a higher higher linefor Seattle today. It should be
at minus one fifty, minus onesixty. I don't care how good Tampa
has been this season. I'm gonnatake Tampa plus one ten today to win
(50:21):
the series in Seattle. Give meyour over under all, right, over
under today. Rangers and Houston, two teams that can really swing the bats.
The overunder is nine, which isa high number, but they've been
under in the first two games ofthis series. So we got one guy
with a ten RA on the mound, another guy with close to a five
ERA on the mound. So I'mgoing over nine Rangers in Houston. Big
(50:45):
offensive explosion down there in Texas. Two to one Rangers today, you hope,
Yeah? I do. I do. Actually, I'll take I'll take
what eight to nothing or a sevento one, Yeah, we'll take that.
I'm going over nine as well. But this one is Giants Mets up
at City Field, Ross Stripling ohand two with a six point eight a
(51:07):
ARRA, David Peterson two and sixwith a seventy arrah. They were nine
even on Friday Night under yesterday.Take the over tonight. Can you believe
it? The pounds of water sixto five and the wild pace RBIA Can
(51:40):
you believe it? Can you believeit? Two things that we found interesting
from this past week in Major Leaguebaseball. Murph, give me your first
one, all right, Ronald Goun, you're Junior Justice having an outstanding season
for the Atlanta Braves, and he'sdoing things that we've never seen before.
How about this. He's the firstplayer in Major League Baseball history with twenty
(52:01):
plus home runs and thirty five plusstolen bases before the All Star break.
That's pretty remarkable what he's getting donedown there, no doubt about it.
Another guy that's truly special major Leaguebaseball Shohei Otani on Japanese Heritage Night at
Angel Stadium. He did the followingsix and the third innings, pitched ten
(52:22):
strikeouts, one earned run, andat the plate pretty modest three for three
for two home runs. Yeah, yeah, pretty amazing. But I mean
we could do him every week. It's yeah, it's just ridiculous with you,
all right. This one comes fromSarah Lanx and it also has to
do with Shohei Otani most home runshit in a calendar month since nineteen hundred
(52:45):
who also struck out thirty batters inthe calendar month. Okay, so here's
your list. June Shohei Otani thisyear fifteen and thirty seven, twenty twenty
one, June Otani thirteen and thirtythree, twenty twenty three, May Otani
(53:06):
forty four and twenty twenty two.August. Yeah, you guess, dude,
Otani eight and thirty one. Soyeah, again, doing things that
we've never seen before. I'll probablynever see again. They reported the other
day that someone was saying that likeeleven years, five hundred and fifty million
dollars, and someone said that's low. It's gonna be in sand Way,
he's gonna get. Damigo Roman forthe Yankees pitched a perfect game, which
(53:30):
is the first one since twenty twelve. So what happened the last time a
perfect game was thrown? In twentytwelve, the Astros were still in the
National League. Bryce Harper and MikeTrout won Rookie of the Year honors.
Are A Dickey won the National LeagueCy Young Award, Chipper Jones was in
his final major league baseball season, and mcguel Cabrera won the American League Triple
Crown. How about that and Istarted with the Philadelphia Phillies and the team
(53:55):
went downhill. We don't talk aboutwhat about that Irish luck? Murph.
That's right. Let's take a lookat the week ahead because we're talking about
positive things. We're not talking aboutMurse TV tenure with the Phillies when they
didn't make the playoffs at all. We're talking about upside ever since he started
doing a broadcast with me over thelast few years. So let's look at
the week ahead. Today's rubber matchwith Ranger Swarres on the hill against the
(54:17):
Nationals. We have an off dayon Monday before we start a six game
road swing to finish off the firsthalf the unofficial first half in Major League
Baseball season with the three against theRays and three in Miami. Big week
on the road. Let's get overfive hundred on the road this season by
handling our business both in Tampa andwith the Marlins. Four and two road
trips sound good to you? Yeah, I think four and two would be
(54:40):
would be terrific. I think anyonewould sign up for that right now.
If you if you escape three andthree, I think you can live with
that, especially if the two winsare in Miami. You know, more
importantly, win in Miami. Ifyou're going to drop a couple of games,
drop him in Tampa. It won'taffect you as much. Obviously you're
chasing those Miami Marlins. But yeah, Born two would be terrific. Give
