(01:18):
broadcaster Greg Murphy, Murph, howare you doing this morning? I'm doing
great. Phils are playing well.It is a gorgeous day. It's been
a pretty nice couple of days hereat the ballpark. Comfortable, great crowds,
yes, and another shell out crowdtoday, So forty two thousand plus
will be screaming down the Cardinals throats. And uh, you know, if

(01:38):
you don't think that makes a difference, you're wrong, because it does.
It's a tough place to play.So it's been it's been fun. It's
been a good homestand so far, they need to keep it up. You
know, the Angels coming to towntomorrow. They got a chance to sweep
the series. It's not a rubbergame today. Yes, for the first
time in a long time on aSunday, we're not worrying about trying to
win the series. On a Sunday, they can go out today and finish

(01:59):
off sweet because this Cardinals team wowa truth and they have you know,
they're they're believe it or not, they're fourth in the National League in ops.
Yeah, I heard Franskie saying thatlast night. That is hard to
believe. It's it's literally the Braves, the Dodgers, the Phillies, and
then the Cardinal, which makes sensewhen you look at record standpoint. I
mean, you know the Phillies, yes, and then and then there's Cardinals.

(02:23):
However they're but hey, listen, this first segment is brought to you
by our good friends at State Farm. Here's the real deal. When you
combine State Farm home and auto insurance, you can save an average of eight
hundred and eighty nine dollars. StateFarm agent David Busto is ready to help
you combine home and auto in SouthJersey and Pennsylvania. Called Dave today.
Eight five six seven four zero fivezero one two. That's eight five six
seven four zero five zero one twolike a good neighbors. State Farm is

(02:46):
there An average annual per household savingsare based on the twenty nineteen national survey
by State Farm of new policyholders whoreported savings by switching to State Farm US.
Old bramans will vary by customer andall applicant, subject to State Farm
underwriting. Requirements. All right,Murrah, we're back to a tick could
give away on this Sunday morning. You know it took the week off last
week with it. We're gonna giveaway another pair of tickets for the Phillies

(03:07):
and Fading Florida Marlins Miami Marlins onFriday, September eighth, at seven oh
five. Uh yea. I takeit like a badge of honor when you
give me this. You know, when you say, hey, I really
like the topic this week. It'sa good one. Sometimes I don't know
if you're actually just you telling methe truth. Thought I would tell you
if I hated it. No,I would tell you I haven't gotten that
one many times. But hey, give me your best one hit wonder.

(03:29):
Yeah, it could be a bandwith a song, an actor, actress
in a movie, an athlete wouldone great season or a run. They
never duplicate it. Give me yourgive me one of your top five.
So when I read that, I'mthinking, Okay, that's easy. You
know, every we all we alltalk about one hit wonders. Oh hey,
this is a one hit wonder andthere's tons in the music world,
right but but but you kind ofexpanded it a little bit which I which

(03:51):
I really appreciated. And you know, it could be an athlete, it
could be a movie, it couldbe a movie star, whatever. And
so this became very difficult for me. I spent I spent a lot of
time trying to figure out a lotof times. Yeah, I mean it's
certainly more than four and a half. Sometimes on it sometimes you pull into
yeah. Yeah. I didn't haveanyone to help me today, so I

(04:11):
had to do it all myself, and I tried very hard not to you
know, just google the list.I tried really hard to pull it from
my brain, which I was ableto do. Take me some time today.
So I'll give you one. Andso I have two from the music
world, two from the sports world, and one from the world of cinema.
Let me give you one of themusic ones, because I think they're
the easiest. Believe it or not, uh survivor. I had the Tiger,

(04:36):
right. They have never had anothermajor hit, but yet I had
a Tiger remains one of the mosticonic songs in American and won a Grammy
and it won I think it wonan Oscar as well. So you know,
you talk about a song that's linkedto a movie obviously, the movie
Rocky I Can't Hold Back by Survivors. A great song, come on,

(05:00):
I'm on, I like it allright, but but but you get my
point. I mean, yeah, like talking top hit that has transcended decades
and decades and decades and and andand young folks to that. You know,
young people today know that song, can sing that song and understand the
relevance of it. So I hada Tiger from Survivor my first one Hit
Wonder. I've got four more, but I'll get into I'm gonna go with

(05:20):
the sports world, which is nosurprise even though this was sparked yesterday on
my four and a half hour ridehome from my mother in laws, and
you know, the song came onand my my wife was like, one
Hit Wonder, and I'm like,oh right, because honestly, I mean,
you know, Bob Barker passed away. We could do that, you
know, as far as like bestgame show, favorite game show, we
could we could have fun with that. But I believe we've done that already.

(05:41):
So I was like, you knowwhat, one Hit Wonder does sound
good? Uh? Stick in theworld sports, Jeremy Lynn sans A good
one. I mean, it waslike, you know, twelve to fifteen
games he set the world on fireand then like lie sanity, Linz Sanity,
and then out of nowhere, itjust completely faded. It was gone,
you know, and in a flashof an eye. What do you
got for me? Slash? Ihave two, but I'll stick it to

(06:02):
one. I'll do a sports one. How about take Away from the Crown?
Peyton hillis yeah, and you saidsomething before the shot. I didn't
realize he was on a Madden Maddencover for the Brown and then he has
to help me the most irrelevant matcover of all time. There. He
was a beast though, and thenhe had, you know, a little
stint with the Giants and then Idon't know what happening. What year was

(06:23):
was his big year? Uh,let me try and pull it up.
Probably twenty thirteen. So fantasy ownersin twenty fourteen hate Peyton hillis right,
I got the number one pick.I'm taking hillis it goes before they alight?
So twenty eleven fantasy owners, Ifeel you pain because I guarantee he
was a tough fretry pick in mostleagues zero, a little down, and

(06:46):
he didn't do anything. I'll tellyou what. Though one recently though he
did almost die, he saved hishe saved his two children. Well,
I mean that's that's pretty yeah, yeah, pretty big time, but big
time he got he got them outof the water and then he had like
a water as long as you knowwhat that's right, I do. I
remember reading that story. I didn'trealize that with them. Well that that's
great, that's great. But yeah, one hit wonder for sure. I'm

(07:09):
not gonna you know, I'm not. I don't want to brag, but
I do think I have the ultimateone hit wonder coming from the world of
sports. And I was coming uplater in the show that's called that's what
we call tea. I like thatyou did that. You did that yesterday
when when they were determining the fantasyfoot draft order from the Phillies and you
know, tune into the pregame showto find out. Six hundred other people

(07:31):
put it up on Twitter before Icould do. That's how I found out.
But hey, in order to windowstickets, you must answer in the
comments section on the Green Legion RadioYouTube channel, the green Legion Facebook page,
or our Twitter handle at green Legion. Our collective favorite answer will win
at the beginning of our final segment, real quick, I would be remiss
not to wish a happy fortieth birthdayto my sister Janice. Uh. They

(07:53):
are coming back from Mexico. Theyjust spent the last five days down there,
so you know it must be nice. So hopefully I can do something
like that from my fortieth although mineis mine is in like, you know,
the Dead Winner, I completely hatethat's a better time to go.
Yeah. Possibly, but my fortiethbirthday is just right around the corner.
It is. It's behind me,but but it's still just right around.
Did you see Michael Parkin wish ahappy sixtieth birthday last night? Ricky bell

(08:18):
Yeah, Ricky Belle and I areabout the same age four Y, I
got the Big Friday, I gotthe Big three. Thank you, thank
you. I'm gonna make this thisshows all about me. Happy birthday.
Yeah. You know what, Actuallyyou're not the biggest news of the of
the show this week. It's JohnJansen got a haircut. Yes, Johnny,

(08:39):
I'm just trying to go out.I'm sure he looks very handsome now.
Yeah, not that he didn't before, John, you know, yeah,
Yeah, let's all right, let'sget out of the box here.
Phillies go four and two this weeksince our last show. Obviously, they
lost the final game of the inthe lowly classic Admitti interesting in the ninth
ending up, and then they alsohad a shot to win Wednesday's game,

(09:01):
And man, that still ticks meoff just a little bit. And I
told you last night you're getting happysack today. So I'm not gonna sit
here and you know, you know, meander about too much about Wednesday's game,
even though we'll dive into it justa little bit here coming up.
But they do have a shot tosweep today and go five and one all
his home stands so far with theAngels coming to town, but the flair
for the dramatics, some of theeasiest wins of the season, and then

(09:24):
you know, man, a goodold fashioned walk off by Trey Turner on
Tuesday night. The way this teamis played. And I was doing some
of the numbers here this morning.Phillies lead all of baseball and comeback wins
since the All Star break. Theyare third overall for the entire twenty twenty
three Major League Baseball season with thirtyseven come from behind wins. That's including
last night's getting where they were downone nothing, and they're tied with the

(09:45):
Marlins for most ninth inning comebacks witheight. Yeah, and resiliency. We've
talked about this all season, resiliency, but I think the most amazing part
of that particular stat is that thelast eight wins for the have been comeback
wins. Eight straight wins they've hadto come from behind. They had five
s three games where they give itruns in the first inning. Yeah,

(10:07):
And so it you know, andresiliency is a big part of championship teams,
and and this team is. Wesaw it last year too, but
this this year, I think evenmore so, this team's ability to never
really be out of the game, well, certainly out of some games.
We haven't had that feeling with thePhillies team. I mean, you're right,
me and you have talked about thisthe last couple of years, but

(10:28):
we haven't had those feelings of youknow, you're down five, six,
seven, nothing, and you feellike those those downtimes a decade where we
didn't make the playoffs, there weresome downtimes during that stretch, and you
were a lot of the times youwere down there on the field with them
three. Nothing. You know,in the early parts of the game,
pretty much you're dead in the water. We haven't felt this way in about

(10:50):
fifteen. You're putting on the rerunsof like Third Rock for the Sun or
something like seriously, no, butbut let me ask you a question.
You're always asking me questions. Letme ask you this question because I'm interested
to see how you would answer this. Right now now, I'm not talking
May, and I'm not talking earlyJune. Right now, bottom of the
ninth inning fills her down. Youknow, maybe you get a run around

(11:11):
second, you're down a run ortwo. Who do you feel confident about
when they come to the plate.Trey Turner, yes, Bryce Harper,
yes, not Cassianos. I washappy the other night when Turner came through
because I knew Cascianos was on deck. And Castianos has has been huge for
us this year, sixth in theNational League hits, and he was our

(11:33):
loane All Star representative, very welldeserved. But for me, going up
against guys that can throw that loanaway breaking ball and he'll flail at it,
that's fair. I think that's fair. Stot bom Marsh, Yeah,
yeah, exactly, So, Imean we just named JT not right at
the moment right now, agree andSharper hit or miss. Yeah, yeah,

(11:56):
so we're in lock step. Iwould agree with everything that you just
that's five guys, five out ofnine, and then you know whoever that
that sixth guy is. I probablyhave more confidence in Jake Cave if he's
going up against the righty, thenI do. If it's Cassianos or Schwarber
in that spot, which is whichis crazy, well, I wouldn't go
that far, but just a littlebit because he's been hot late when three

(12:18):
weeks yeah, when he's swinging thebat, well, you know, he
stays, he doesn't chase, andand he barrels balls up. I would
agree with that. Schober. Tome, it's it's the strikeout that that
gets Schwarber right. You know,so so often in a big moment.
More home months this year than singles. It's crazy, right, I mean

(12:39):
it's crazy and doubles, right, you know, obviously more home runs and
doubles too. But anyway, Istill have confidence in Schwarber to an extent,
and I think that's what you said. If he comes up in a
big spot with the bases loaded, you know that they have to pitch to
him. Yeah, they have tothrow him a strike. And if they
do throw him a strike, veryoften he can do some da Castianos.

(13:01):
The one thing I'll say about Nickand I agree that it's hard at this
moment to feel confident. If we'retalking about it, may I think we
all would have said absolutely, yeah. Yeah. The thing about Castianos is
he is chasing out of the zone, not as much as we saw last
year, but he's still doing itto an extent. But he knows it.
And that's what I love about NickCastianos is he's like, he's like,

(13:22):
I know they're gonna throw him inthe pitch down in a way,
and I still can't And he hassaid this on the air, I still
can't hold up sometimes. And youknow, baseball is you know, we
say it all the time, Baseballis really hard, and hitting a baseball
is really hard. I love theway Nick, even in his downtimes,
can be so self work. Somany players are not. Nick is so

(13:46):
self aware of what he's doing welland what he's not even when he's not
doing it well, and he knowswhat he's not doing it well, and
he can't fix it. At themoment, he still understands what he's not
doing. Well. I think that'scool. He had he had a strike
got the other night where the ballstarted started on the outside corner, coming
out of the pitcher's hands, andit just it never even had a shot

(14:07):
at being a strike. It wasa complete frisbee. And I'm like,
what you see? I know,I know, but but they all do
it, because you know, theyall have their moments with it. They
all do. I mean, eventhe best hitters, maybe with the accession
of a guy like Tony gwyn orsomething like that, but even the best
sitters chase. I mean, MikeTrout chases. You see it a lot.
You know, you see him swingingup balls in the dirt and you're

(14:28):
like, this is one of thebest hitters in baseball. Harper had one
to bounce three feet in front ofthe plate season And part of it is
because you're you're you're thinking about,he's gonna throw me a fastball here,
and then he throws you a youknow, a slider in the dirt or
a changeup, and you're just like, you've already committed to the fastball.
That's what makes hitting a baseball sodarn hard. But uh but I think
it's cool. How you know,we agree there are a lot of guys

(14:52):
in this lineup right now that youfeel pretty confident about it in a big
moment. I mean, what's bonebatting this year? Three sixty six with
runners to scoring because it's just beenoutstanding and and and Bryson Stott. I
mean we talk about had You're you'reright that because you're going to it that
at bad that he had in theGiants game fourteen pitches. Fo. Yeah,

(15:15):
it's tremendous. He's a guy thatjust understands and strikes on so well.
But he's also a guy that understandswhen when he gets I mean,
he has more two strike hits thananybody in baseball, the most in baseball.
I think he has somewhere around seventytwo strike hits. I think that's
insane. And we're talking about aguy in his second year. What what

(15:37):
Bryson Stott has become, uh inin the big leagues as a big league
ball player, I think is soexciting for what's to come in the next
couple of years. I Mean, you can make an argument he's been the
team's MVP this year. Yeah, and and and I think the the you
know, second places. I mean, Bryson, if he continues to do
what he's doing, I was gonnasay he might get there. If you're

(15:58):
talking about from day one to daynow, it's it's it's Bryson. And
I mean, like you know,he had especially earlier in the part parts
of the season, was really himand Cassianos were carrying that offense until Bryce
came back, and then like youknow, we're gonna dive into Bryce Harper
and all that stuff. But Imean, if you look at it right
now, why are we why arewe where we are right now? It's
because of guys like Bryson Stott, what Cassianos did the first half of the

(16:21):
season. Yeah, no doubt.Look look at the top of this wild
card stand sands right now. ThePhillies are seventy one and fifty eight on
the season and this week four andtwo. But they've gained ground on everybody,
even even the Diamondbacks. We've loston a ball last night, Yes,
yeah, they were up four two, but then and then and the
Reds tied it in the top ofthe ninth, and then they went up

(16:44):
seven four in the top of thetenth, and then the Reds and then
the Diamondbacks tied it in the bottomof the tenth, and then the Reds
wound up getting a ball that broughthome the game winning rock. I was
watching that. We had a coupleof times, well they weren't home,
so it's it's close to a vote, right it does put them out.
But right now they're sitting in theCatbirds seat. I mean they're three up
on the Cubs, three and ahalf on the Diamondbacks, four on the

(17:07):
Reds, and then those teams thatare like right on the outside the Giants
now five and then six and ahalf on the on the Fish and it's
just like, it's incredible to seewhere they're at. I wish they would
have done something like this, andthey peaked quite kind of like this a
little bit earlier in the season towhere the division was still a realistic possibility.
But for what it's worth and wherewe're looking to go, just get
back to the postseason. But thatWildcard series here, three games at the

(17:30):
Bank, and we've seen the crowdsall season long and back to last October.
Nobody wants to play here, Nobodywants to come in here and face
this team in the three game series. Absolutely, and you know the fact
that all three games will be herein Philadelphia. It's not like it's two
and one, right, you know, because someone could steal a game and
then go back home and and andhave that advantage. But all three games,

(17:52):
if you're the number one wildcard, the all three games here in Philadelphia,
I think that's it's a very bigadvantage. Larry Anderson and I had
this conversation on The Most Game Showlast night. But the way the schedule
broke this year for the Phillies earlyon, I mean, we were we
have been on the road and youknow, up until the All Star Break,
way more than any other team. And they were able to kind of

(18:14):
hold their own, hold their ownkeep their head above water, keep their
head above water, and they playedwell enough that when the schedule turned after
the All Star Break, and Imean, we've been home the month of
August almost entirely. We've had thinkwe've had one road trip in the month
of August, and it was ashort one, a seven day road trip.
And here we are playing like twentyone games and all and all of

(18:36):
a sudden, you know, separatingyourself, because this team does play.
Right now, the Phillies are thirteengames over five hundred collectively, right they
are thirteen games over five hundred atCitizens Bank Park and thirty three and thirty
three on the road. So itjust goes to show you how well they
play here at home. And Ithink now you know it was a tough

(18:56):
road to home early, but nowthat the schedule has kind of broke back
towards the Phillies way with all thesehome games, it couldn't have happened any
better for that. Yeah, hey, and just real quick, because we
did have some technical issues earlier. This first segment was brought to you by
our good friends over at State Farms, Paul Dave today. Eight six seven
four zero five zero one two. That's eight six seven four zero five zero

(19:18):

Not struggling. He's just he justspent a few days out in Vegas with
brakes. Oh yeah, Jansen,I was thinking of this song that you
end the line change with as well. That was one of my answers.

hate Dirty Windows dot com. Allright, Murph, So I kind of
teased it as we were coming backon, but I didn't do it on
air. Bryce Harper, and We'vebeen looking at the lineup from the last

(21:55):
week here and one thing I've beentrying to find it, like like Matt
Gilbert or Todd's Lucky or you know, like Alice Faffee, somebody to ask
the question to Rob Thompson this weekabout why Bryce hasn't played first base all
week long? Asked every single day, that question has been asked every single
everything. I've been looking forward onTwitter and I can't find it. Well,

(22:17):
you know, if you tune intothe pregame show each day before the
fighting Fils. Franski asked Rob directlythat question every day and again he's daching
again today. Yeah, okay,So, so the answer is pretty simple.
They are mildly concerned about stiffness andBryce Hart first back. Bryce.

(22:41):
Bryce is the kind of guy,He's very obviously in tune with his body,
as most of these guys are.But He's also very honest about when
he's feeling well and when he's not. And he went to the fills,
he went to the trainers and said, you know, about a week ago,
I guess it was maybe even alittle bit longer. He had a
little bit of stiffness in is back. And Rob's feeling is this, if

(23:04):
if he's swinging the bat the wayhe is, and you know, he's
been remarkable, he can still swingthe bat with this back stiffness. Rob
would rather take a healthy Bryce Harperin the lineup and Shober and left,
then take a chance in putting Bryceover at first with the little bit of

(23:26):
a bulky back and using Shoreber asthe DH for him. You know,
it's all about weighing probabilities. Howcan we get this win? What is
more beneficial to us? And hebelieves that if they put Bryce out at
first base and for whatever reason hetweaks his back or it becomes fatigued and

(23:47):
he can't play the next day, that's more of a detriment. So where
he goes in the I L you'drather have Yeah, And this is not
I mean, certainly everything I've beentold, this is not an ilse situation.
This is not something that is goingto rise to that level. It
simply is wear and tear daily playing, you know, every day on your

(24:10):
feet kind of thing. And theyjust want to keep Bryce wrapped in bubble
wrap and use him in the lineupuntil the moment that they have to deploy
him, which probably isn't until midSeptember, you know, for the stretch
run and the postseason, because youwill see him play, I believe the
bulk of unless he's still hurting.I think you'll see him at first base

(24:33):
the bulk of the postseason. Theyjust are in a position where they can
they can be careful right now.And and you know, so you say
to yourself, well, what isit about first base that you know might
cause some issues for Bryce? AndRob said, honestly, the biggest thing
and it sounds simple, but youknow, at the major league level,

(24:55):
when we all played bass, youknow, you all played the games and
stuff, but at the major leaguelevel, every single pitch, every single
infielder, you're on your toes. You're on your toes and you're bending at
your back every single pitch. Sothat's one hundred and fifty times a game.
And if they can avoid that fora period of time and allow him
to get whatever stiffness is in thatback out. They're gonna do that,

(25:18):
and that's where it is. Theyare not concerned. I said on the
show last night, there is almostno level of concern. It's really just
it's just an abundance of caution. That's what it is, which is great.
Yeah, I like hearing that, because the Phillies are a better team
when they can when they can putMarshot and left and they could put Rojas
and center now defensively, there's somuch better. And then you know Swarber

(25:41):
is dhing. But the fact thatwe know this I like. I like
hearing that. Yeah, it's notkilling the team right now, like with
him not being at that's the key. So as long as they continue this
little stretch that they're on playing goodbaseball and they can get away with Harper
dhing, I think they're going todo it. And then the moment they

(26:03):
feel like, okay, we can'tget away with it anymore, then I
think it changes. So so BryceHarper now talking about the statistics here,
everybody wants to sit there and saythat you know, he had lost the
power stroke and he wouldn't get itback until twenty twenty four. Well,
here in August, he's matting threesixty one, nineteen runs, score at

(26:26):
eight doubles, a triple, sevenhome runs. One of them is the
inside Parker, which his back lookedpretty good on that eighteen RBI. It's
kind of like Stella. He's gothis groove back and he looks really he
looks really good right now at theplate. They should have stat last night
on the Fox The Fox Show withhim and Turner almost identical numbers for the

(26:48):
month of August. And this iswhat we dreamed of as Phillies fans and
broadcasters coming into the season, becauseit's not just one straw that stirs to
drink. You've got two and they'reworking pretty good right now. Yeah,
and and and again. You knowif there I was thinking about this this
morning. You know, when whenI finally retire from the Baseball Brunch radio

(27:10):
program, which I hope is,you know, fifteen years down the road.
But when I finally do, you'renot dumb with me yet, not
yet, not yet. If there'sone thing that I can leave with with
our listeners, it's that baseball isa long season and there are ups and
downs and and living and dying withwith every game and even every week with

(27:33):
a baseball team is really kind ofwasted energy. It's it's a it's a
big picture kind of thing. Soyeah, I mean, you know,
you look at what Trey and Bryceare doing in the month of August,
and it's what we all envisioned theseason would be like. But in reality,
it was never going to be.You know, break in May,
and those guys are producing like thatand in or April and May and June

(27:57):
and July and August, and youknow they're gonna have ups and downs,
and we saw the downs and nowhopefully we're seeing the ups and they can
take it through September. Don't besurprised if Trey Turner goes into a slump
again for a period of time.Don't be surprised if Bryce's Stott or Alec
because it could happen. But butthe way they're producing right now is what

(28:22):
we thought. Okay, if thisoffense can all click at the same time,
or a couple of the big guysclick at the same time, here's
what's gonna happen. And that's what'shappening. Five runs a game. I
think they're averaging right now. Idon't know what our record is in August.
I know it's good, but youknow, it's just the little things
that we hoped would happen are startingto happen now. And that's a pretty

(28:45):
good time for them to start happening, right you know, here we are
with four weeks left to go inthe season. You know, hopefully they're
peaking at this moment and they staypeaked for another six weeks or so.
I know, Zach Wheeler had arough first inning up in Williamsport last day,
but last night and and really therest of that game afterwards, I
mean, he did get you throughseven innings and then last night he got

(29:06):
you into the eighth. But withthe eleven run lead, you might as
well just preserve the bullets. Butman, his fastball his last two starts
is getting back to where it needsto be at ninety seven ninety eight is
where he's averaging right now. It'skind of like, you know, like
you were saying, like you know, preserving Bryce and put him in that
ball wrap. Zach Wheeler kind ofknows his body and he knows where he

(29:30):
needs to kind of ratchet it up, and last year he needed the two
to three week prieve. This year, I think he's kind of just did
enough to get him to this pointand the six mat rotation help. Yeah,
and it's helped, But now he'sjust starting to ratch up eighty pitches
last night sixty four strikes, tenstrikeouts. There's seven. He gave up
a solo shot to a kid forhis first major league I wasn't a bad

(29:55):
pitch. I mean that was downin and at the knees. The kid
went down and got it. Tippedyour cap. But man, I heard
Franski and La talking about last nightthe chase rate. I think it was
like on the curveball, I thinkhe threw I don't have the exact number,
so don't hold me to this, but if he if he threw fifteen

(30:15):
curveballs, I think they swung inthis ten or eleven times on the curveballs.
We had him on the postgame showlast night, and you'll hear a
little bit of it on the pregameshow today too. But he was talking
about coming out of the bullpen. He knew that, he knew he had
his velocity, his arm felt good, he knew he was gonna be able
to you know, the fastball wasgonna be there as long as he had
command. But he had a realgood feel for the curveball coming out of

(30:38):
the bullpen too, And he said, you know, JT just said,
let's ride the curveball because it's workingright now. He said he only threw
like two or three cutters last nightout of those eighty pitches because he didn't
need it. He did not needthe cutter. Stuck with the two seam
fastball, the four seam fastball, and the curveball for the most part.
And yeah, he was filthy lastnight. And after the game, I'm

(31:02):
sure folks heard Rob Thompson dropping thehey, better start looking at this guy.
In the Cy Young conversation we talkedabout, Yeah, I think about
a month ago and he was topfive and Cy Young gambling odds, I
think right now top three. MaybeI don't know what the odds are,
but I mean Blake Snell, SpencerStrider. Yeah, yeah, and by
the top two right now, probablythe top two. But he is in

(31:23):
the conversation. And what I saidon the show last night is if he
pitches like that five or six moretimes, oh he's gonna be top of
mind in the conversation for sure.Yeah, and Philly has also made a
bit of history yesterday with their threehome runs. They now have forty eight
for the month of August, whichis taken over for the you know guy
that that drugger, not the offensivejuggernaut, the twenty nineteen September Phillies.

(31:47):
I thought that was so weird.I remember, we've faded down the stretch
in September twenty nineteen, and herewe are hitting forty six home runs in
that month. You probably know theanswer to this, but do you know
what hear? Eight home runs byBamboo br Milk all Old brad Miller.
I think he had three in onegame in September five Toronto. Yeah,
I don't, I don't. Itmight have been I think it was against
Toronto. But yeah, when Iread that, I'm like, wait a

(32:08):
minute. The Phillies franchise record forhome runs in a month is held by
the twenty nineteen team. That seemedso odd to me. But now it's
held by the twenty twenty three team, and and and they're adding so what
do they have forty seven? Fortyeight? Now the record was forty six

(32:29):
three more games to go in themonth of August. Yeah, I mean
they could today and three against theAngels. Yeah, so all in August.
Yeah, I don't Yeah, yeah, I tell you what the week
thirty first is on is coming upon. Okay, but hey, the
Angels are coming to town and thebig news of the week with you know,
like terrible news. Yeah, well, good news for three days we

(32:52):
don't have to see him pitch. But good news for the Phillies, Yeah,
for sure, right, but forthe game of baseball as a whole.
Torn ucl again. Now, they'renot saying that surgery is necessary at
this time, but we've seen thistoo many times, domine guys, Dave
Robertson, probably Cliffly, you know, with his almost dozen Yeah, it's
just like we can rehab it.We can do this the first time,

(33:15):
the first time. Crazy the thing. Uh, he's gonna play the rest
of the season, and for Idon't want to say for selfish reasons,
they're out of the race, Buthe plays the rest of the season.
He's gonna be the MVP for thesecond time in the American League. He
could probably sit out the rest ofthe season, gets surgery tomorrow and it
wouldn't matter, he'd still be yes. Do you think he's lost any value

(33:37):
on his incoming contract? I mean, I know he's the Oh yeah you
think so. I still think he'sthe attraction. But whether he pitches in
twenty twenty four, twenty twenty five, it doesn't matter. I don't think
he ever pitches again. WHOA,I don't I don't think. I don't
see Joho tani. I mean, okay, will he pitch again, Maybe

(33:58):
he pitches a little bit, hasa full regular major leagues. I think
that your thirty starts a year.Personally, I think the unbelievable experiment that
was shoheo tany two way player isover. I can't imagine this is his
second Tommy John surgery. He isstill the best or one of the best

(34:20):
hitters in the American League, andhe's going to get paid that way.
But he was going to get paidas one of the best hitters in the
American League and the best pitcher inthe American League. So he's not gonna
get that now. So that sevenhundred million dollar contractor I think that has
I think he ends up losing closeto three million dollars. Now he's going

(34:45):
he and his representatives are gonna say, I'll be back and I'm gonna pitch
again. But if you're an organizationbringing him in, can you pay him?
Is that the investment you're looking tomake, right? Can you pay
him on a hope and a prayerthat he can pitch again at that level

(35:05):
and stay healthy. I just thinkat that point it becomes a bad business
decision for most teams. You know, he's gonna get a ton of money
and well deserved, and I'll neverhave to worry about money again. So
it's not as if you know he'sgonna go for broke exactly. But yeah,
no, I think it cost hima couple hundred million dollars. And
I feel terrible because he has beensuch a good thing for the game of

(35:30):
baseball, and he's such an ambassadorfor baseball as a global game. By
all accounts, he's a great personality. He's everything you want, and it's
a shame. But he's gonna comeback and still be one of the best
players in baseball. But I thinkit's gonna be mostly a one way kind
of thing. Absolutely, And thenthat sad news. Steven Strasburg announced his

(35:51):
retirement the other day. I meangood for the Phillies in the long run.
I mean, but I mean likehe hasn't pitched the last four years
outside of thirty one and a thirdinnings pitched. And it's not like he's
not gonna get paid. He's gonnacontinue to make thirty five million dollars annually
through twenty twenty six, and thenhe gets twenty six point six million and
twenty twenty seven, twenty twenty eight, twenty twenty nine. Yeah, you
know what, you know, thesad part is, you know, those

(36:14):
those great guys down there down theninety five, you know highway, they
didn't ensure that contract, so they'reon the hook for all of it.
It's so beautiful talking about bad business. You know, I've never been a
I appreciate what Steven Strasburg was asan athlete and as a picture. I've
never been a fan of Strasburg, and that probably has mostly to do because

(36:36):
he played for the Nationals during thatperiod and it was their peak when when
we were when we were in ourvalley. I don't think you think back
to me Steven Strasburg. You know, two goofballs ten years from now,
who were doing a radio show ata Bar on a Sunday morning and they're
doing a list on one hit wonders. It might still be us, it
might still be up. They're godwilling, right, But but Steven Strasburg

(36:59):
might be on that list because tome, he was He was a flash
in the pan his rookie year, you know, pretty exciting, and then
he gets hurt, and then hecomes back and he was good. And
then he had the World Series yearand he was outstanding, and he took
him to the World Series and theywon the World Series and that made his

(37:19):
career. But then he hasn't beenable to pitch shit. So to me,
he's kind of a one hit wonderin a lot of ways. I
don't I won't remember Stephen Strasburg asa, you know, unbelievable player if
from his era. I'll remember himas an unbelievable talent that never was able
to because of health reasons. Yeah. Yeah, all right, So the

(37:40):

on Baseball Brunch and some of usare leaking oil with our picks the last
couple of weeks. And for once, it's not murph. This is one

(38:22):
of two point five Fox Sports ofGambler Baseball Brunch, brought to you by
cheerleaders. Gentleman's Club will be rightback after these messages. If you can
wager on it, we're talking aboutit. It's the Gambler. The needed

(38:44):

in his apartment drinking beers and singingthis song like he does with Google Dolls.
Is what he is. What hedidn't Vegas great great of the pool.
Yeah right, I think it's sittingin the bathroom. Tell what you
said? Well, maybe it couldbe both, who knows. Yeah,

(39:07):
let me scrat be here a minute, especially if Johnny's had some taco bell,
which we've done shows quick time. All right, Final sevement brought to

(39:50):
The lovel Them Hotel your new oasisin Seaisle City. Merv Give me
the rest of your top five onehit wonders, one hit wonders, and
you put the caveat for f thatare you know, just joining us that
it didn't have to be music. You know, you think of one hit
wonders. You think songs, right, you think bands that had one big
hit and and obviously there's hundreds ofthose. But but you expanded it,

(40:10):
which I thought was cool. Sofrom almost any walk alive. So yeah,
I have I have five already gaveyou the eye of the Tiger Survivor,
and I'll mega mega hit for fiftyyears and and and still going strong.
They didn't really do much after that, all right, So that's my
first one. Uh, let megive you one from the world of sports.

(40:31):
And this I don't know if it'llruwful feathers or not, but the
nineteen ninety three Phillies, as acollective group, they were a one hit
wonder, you know. And we'sgoing to give you a weggie when you
get over to the ball if youcan catch me. He's not very quick
nowadays, so I don't know.He could say he keep saying he could
raise Schwerber. Oh that'd be ahell of a raise the three of us.

(40:52):
You know, you could you couldtime that with a sun dial just
don't pull an Angela Galdy and belowboth to see who can actually crossed the
fitness. Yeah, it's a racefor glory for sure. Can we do
that for charity? No, wecannot. You know, Shure would win
that race going away, which iskind of scary, it is. Yeah,

(41:13):
nineteen ninety three Phillies. So youknow, you think about how many
guys on that team had career yearsto get them to the point. You
know, ninety two not very good. They've had added the guys in ninety
three and ninety four, you know, with a strike year, it was
a weird year or so. Butreally it's the one time in that eighty
three to two thousand and seven wherethey made playoffs. You hear that that

(41:36):
that saying catch lightning in a bottleand they are the ultimate we caught lightning
in a bottle team. That ninetythree team a bunch of grizzlebold ventures.
You know Harry's line, Uh,you know the wonderful band. Yeah,
and that's exactly what they were.So so the ninety three Phillies are on
my list. Has a one hitwonder I'll go back to the music.

(41:57):
This is my least favorite on mylist, But it's pretty amazing. You
know that stupid song Gangham style.Yeah, right, everybody knows, right,
everybody knows that song, right, that dude, Okay, we got
we got, we got some Ganghamgoing. He's he's made a ton of
money off of that. He isworth because of the one song. He
is worth sixty million dollars, thatdude. And and it wasn't even a

(42:22):
song. It was one of themost dance one of the most viewed videos
on YouTube. Right, yeah,I mean it's a it's a song in
the dance. I mean, atleast it's a song in the dance.
I mean it's not it's not thecash Me outside chick. Okay, I
don't know what that is, cashMe off side? How about that?
I don't know that, okay,But she was on like more or something.

(42:42):
Your point. It is a songand a dance. But because I
was gonna go with take on Mefrom Maha, Yeah, because again Mega
hit number one video in the historyof MTV. But but that was it
for them. But anyway, Ididn't go with that, okay, So
that that was Gang of Scots sixtymillion dollars. I went with him for
the world of movies. Whatever happenedto Cuba Gooding Junior? He comes in

(43:06):
at no I mean, I knowhe was in the other movies movie,
but he won an oscar in hisin his first performance with Jerry McGuire,
and you thought, all right, here's this young talented guy, and where
did you go? One hit? What wasn't his first? What? What?
Oh? Gladiator? Okay, allright, all right, So I

(43:30):
think radio What Dreams May Come?Uh? I mean the movie again,
an Oscar? This is the movieby on this stack, I think Cubano
Gooding Junior. I expected him tobe a megastar, like like Michael Jordan,
Michael B Michael B. Jordan,and and he wasn't. I think

(43:52):
he should have spent six to sevenminutes on your list instead of four to
five. I'm getting the list.I'm getting his IMBD right now, all
right, give me your other one, hey, Cuba, one hit wonder,
Buddy, one hit wonder, allright? And finally in the world
of sports, I think the numberone. It's hard to argue that Buster
Douglas wasn't I mean literally a onehit wonder, right, I mean he

(44:15):
beats Mike Tyson in a fight wherehe was you know, one hundred to
one underdog, holds the title, fights one more time as the heavyweight chant
and loses to a Vander Holyfield andnever holds the title again. One hit
wonder in the world of sports. So I'm going with Buster Douglas. There
we go. Here's what we're lookingat, because I don't think any of

(44:36):
them were on what we have, all right, So Blinded by the Light
by Man for Man Nicky by TonyBasil Brady Anderson of the Orioles. I
thought of him, but it wassteroid induce So I don't do that fastball
the way Toto Africa Semisnic Closing Timeand five Miles by the Proclaimers, Soft
Cell Taine It love, Yeah.I mean, they're all one hit wonders.

(45:00):
I don't like any of them.I'm a big fan. I love
the song blinded by the Light. When I'm out, I'm listen to the
oldie rock station. I'm on thepatio, yes, all right, and
you know I'm smoking a cigar. It's a great, great song. All
right. If I'm going with thatlist, which I guess I have to,
I would go go mine, whichis much better. I can't give

(45:23):
you the tickets you go to everygame. Yeah, okay, I'll stand
out front and handabout on that list. I'm going Africa total okay, all
right, Slash give me a tidebreaker. Henderson knows where I'm going Africa.
But Toto is not a one hitwonder, all right? Right, yeah,
but that's Rosanna. Which one is? Man for Man? All right?

(45:47):
It's cool. So I'm blinded bythe light. Man for Man fair
enough? He would need three ticketsfor me. I give you four.
Last week get out, all right? That is Keenan Hart Keena congratulations.
Yeah, Keenan Harman is the onethat want to take it, all right.
So we got we got a rollhere, all right, So we
gotta roll, Murth you went toin one last week missing out in your
underdog mets. I see how itis. We gotta roll because I'm kicking

(46:10):
your no. No, it's okay. We got plenty of times to what
we need to do. All right. You're twenty six and twenty eight in
the season with thirty three and ahalf points, now, all right,
I went owen three for the secondconsecutive wee and I'm sorry, my mic
cut out? What what did youjust say? In three for the second
consecutive week. I'm struggling right now, twenty eight sixteen on the season with
thirty five points, so I havea point and a half over you right

(46:31):
now, So give me your firstpick for the day. Closing the gap.
All right, here we go myfavorite today for no apparent reason other
than it just seems like such amismad. Yeah, we both we throw
to the same thing. Houston Astros. We're only minus one seventy over the
Detroit Tigers. I have no goodreason other than the Houston Astros are a

(46:52):
hell of a lot better than theDetroit Landers pitching. Oh see, I
don't even know that. This ishow I can belod and the Astros need
this game, so so I'm thinkingthe Astros over to George is my favorite.
All right, I'm gonna go withthe Rangers. I'm gonna stick in
the American League West. They're inMinnesota. Jordan Montgomery's pitched really well.
He's going up against Bailey over theyone yesterday. They're gonna win the series
in Minnesota. They're better than Minnesota, and they again, just like the

(47:15):
Astros, they have to win becausethe Mariners are red hot, the best
in baseball over the last month anda week. It's insane what they've been
doing. They're nuclear right now.That's a pretty good that's a can I
say, that's a gut seat pick. Absolutely, that's a gut pick.
Alright, underdog. I've got Milwaukeeand San Diego playing today. Michael Watkin's
pitching for San Diego, which andhe's been good. He's been very good.

(47:37):
He's ten and two. Yeah, but the Brewers are the underdog in
this game, which I can't figureout. So I'm going Brewers over San
Diego as my underdogs. All right. I'm gonna go with the Nationals,
who are another one of the hottestteams in Major League Baseball since the All
Star Break, to sweep the Marlins. The Marlins has been struggling, David

(47:58):
Robertson has been struggling since he wentdown to the h you know, to
South Beach, South Beach. I'mtaking the Nationals at plus one forty five.
You're over under. I like theMarlins in that game, all right,
over under. For no reason otherthan I close my eyes and put
my finger down. Dodgers and theRed Sox nine and a half runs,
which seems like a ton of runs. So I'm taking the over because i
have no logic whatsoever. I'm goingover eight and a half. Angels mess

(48:22):
Canning with a four point six oneear ray against Peterson the five point five
nine array. They stink. Bothof them can kind of hit. So
I'm gonna go over eight and ahalf up at City Field? Can you
believe it? Five pounds of oneat six to five? And the wild

(48:55):
things RB I had ten year.Believe it? Can you believe it?
Two things we found interesting from thispast week in Major League Baseball, Murph,
give me your first one, allright. We talked about Julio Ardaiguez
and what an amazing stretch of gameshe had over the last you know it
crossed into this week. How aboutthis. He improved his batting average from

(49:15):
two fifty six to two seventy eightin that six game span, his on
base percentage from three nineteen to threethirty six, slugging from four thirty two
to four to sixty two, andhis ops went up almost fifty point seven
fifty one to seven ninety eight insix games. That's amazing. See,
I'm gonna go with the Jay RodShow as well, but it's also going
to add in the misery that isYankees fans. Okay, so last week,

(49:38):
Julio Arriguez in his in a fourgame stretch had seventeen hits, five
runs, twenty five total bases andtwo home runs. The New York Yankees
in that same four game stretch seventeenhits, four runs, twenty five total
bases, two home runs. It'sa good one, all right. We've
talked about how good the Braves are, especially in the first inning this year

(49:58):
first inning one hundred and twenty fourrun that's the most of any team in
any inning. But it's happening inthe first inning. They have thirty six
home runs in the first inning, cheaters, thirty six home runs, eighth
and seventy seven hits. That's mostof any team, and they've scored seventy
six more runs in the first inningthan any other team. Cheating. I'm

(50:19):
gonna I'm gonna pay some homage hereto Bob Barker. Did you know that
Babe Ruth hit four hundred and seventysix home runs after Bob Barker was born.
Well, I didn't know that becauseI saw it this morning. Yeah,
good old Bob bark come on downman. Probably one of my favorite
movie scenes ever, him and happygold Mom. Yeah. Yeah, It's
so funny that there's a whole generationremember Bob Barker for happy Gilmore when we

(50:40):
all remember him obviously for the prices, right, but r I p hey,
look ninety nine years sign me upalmost made it to one hundred.
December would have been one hundred four. Ye. Philly's trying to break out
the brooms rooms today against the Cardinalshere at home. Otani and Angels coming
in for three all day Thursday beforethey go back out in the road Milwaukee
next week, big series in Milwaukee, you know, especially if you're looking

(51:04):
at maybe the Reds of that comesmake a run at that Anal Central and
the Brewers fall back. We're oneand two against the Brewers, big weekend
next weekend going into that series. One name we didn't mention today Aaronola.
He pitches today against this Cardinals team. I really am excited to watch Aaronola
pitch Dominis the Cardinals just like Wheeler. He does and and I really think

(51:25):
he's start I believe, and I'man Aaronola guy. But so I'll front
still that no, but I am. And so we've been over it three
years. But I believe he's he'sstarting to ramp it up a little bit,
starting to figure things out, andI think he's gonna I think he's
gonna have an outstanding game today. That's my prediction. What's your what's your

(51:45):
line? Come mere line? SoI think he goes h seven and two
thirds. He allows four hits, one, two runs, walks one,
and strikes out eight. I likeit. There you go. I like
it all right, Mary, shakeyour brother. Another another Sunday in the
books, we did it with theBaseball Brunch Gang, and sitting over here

(52:06):
with the Magic Man Kyle Nunnamaker andJohnny quaff back in studio on the board,
and my beautiful nieces out here hangingout with us on this Sunday morning.
I'm Chris Sacker Greenley to radio andlike a three to one pitch to
Ryan Howard, we are out ofhere. We'll see you guys next week,
same time, same network, sameBatchanna Yep. Another owner in the

(52:27):
night, the night in the Night.

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
