Who gets to determine who are the members of the church? In the centuries before the Reformation, the gathered church typically included all the members of society. Against the Catholics and Magisterial Reformers, who assumed a level of cooperation between the church and the state, the Anabaptists believed that the church should be free from the influence of the civil magistrates and untainted by those who professed faith but lived unholy lives. The Anabaptists worked to maintain a pure church by practicing voluntary membership, church discipline, and a separation of the spheres of the church and the state.
Join us as we explore the early Anabaptist view of the church with Nathan Zook, pastor of Hamden Mennonite Church and professor of political science, international relations, and American government.
