Now let's get started on thisbeautiful journey.
(00:24):
May God bless you abundantly.
Hello everyone, welcome back toGrow, where God reveals our way
.
I'm so thrilled that you'vejoined us.
Today.
We are going to click in toanother spiritual marker, one
that I talked about in episodeone, which is my career.
(00:46):
So what does it mean to have aspiritual marker connected to
what we would call my career?
It really has to do withbringing God to work, and that
may sound strange to you.
We say that God should sit in abox and not come out until our
quiet time, bible studies ormaybe church on Sunday, but
(01:07):
really, god calls us to live anintegrated lifestyle.
So if God is truly living inour hearts and he is leading our
life, then we can expect thatGod would show up with us at
work.
And just for a little bit ofcontext, god is always at work
around us always at work aroundus.
And so the question is are weinviting Him into the work that
(01:31):
we do?
And I love the spiritual truthwhere Paul talks about in
Colossians that work is a formof obedience, it's a form of
worship unto the Lord.
And that's what I really thinkabout when I'm bringing God to
work with me is that I amhonoring Him through the form of
(01:53):
treating work as a form ofworship, that I'm doing the work
for Him.
And then what does God say?
That he will bless the works ofour hands.
So if we are not bringing Godinto the workplace, that means
chances are we could be missingout on a blessing from the Lord,
and I certainly wouldn't wantanyone to be missing out on
(02:15):
blessings from the Lord.
So we are going to click intothis.
So I'm going to give you alittle bit of overview just to
kind of start us off with mycareer.
Where did I start and where am Iat today?
And I started back in themid-90s, if you can believe it,
yes, I am that old.
I started in technology as asoftware engineer and I got to
(02:38):
work with all various forms oftechnology, from Fujitsu Kobal,
if you know what that is toWindows NT, to the first
versions of Visual Basic and theOracle database.
That wasn't really up andrunning all that often.
I had to go through quite a bitof iterations to have that
thing become stable.
But let me not digress.
(02:58):
I have been in and around lotsof different flavors of
technology, spanning almostthree decades now of my career.
But I love the fact that Istarted as a software engineer
because it really helped meunderstand the technicalities of
how do you build great software.
So if I understand that when Ihad the first opportunity to
(03:22):
start to lean in and lead teams, then I could really inspire and
understand the pains and thetrials and tribulations, if you
will, that my teams would facewhile they were building great
technology.
So it really helped me increasemy empathy for what my
teammates across my career havegone through and are going
(03:44):
through today.
I've had the privilege ofleading a team of one with five
people, and I have led teams ofover 500.
And so I've had a diverse setof teams across my career
leading at different variationsof scale.
As far as number of teammatesare concerned that I'm directly
(04:08):
leading, and also geographicallocation I have teammates all
over the world, so I get theopportunity to interface with
several different culturalbackgrounds, perspectives, just
where people are coming from.
It's helped me learn andconnect with cultures that I
(04:29):
otherwise would not have had theopportunity to learn about and
connect to and really just bringmy faith into those
relationships at work too.
So it's been just a veryfruitful career today and I
continue to love technology andwill be in it hopefully for a
few more decades to come.
But I will say that when I firststarted off as a technology
(04:52):
leader, I was not a good leader.
I grew up with children shouldbe seen and not heard.
Environment whether it would beat the larger family gatherings
or if my mom just wanted herpeace and quiet, we were to be
seen but not heard.
And then also very much commandand control.
(05:15):
Don't ask questions, just dowhat I say, and if you challenge
you could be faced withnegative consequences.
There would be discipline onthe other side of it.
So I took that command andcontrol parental style that I
was raised inside of and Ibrought that into the
marketplace because I reallydidn't have any other modeling
(05:37):
to go after until I realizedthat something had to change.
Why did I realize this?
Because I had a friendship, ateammate that worked for me, who
was a dear friend, and becausemy behavior was command and
control do what I say and Idon't want to hear from you it
(05:59):
really started to break down thetrust in the relationship.
This person actually started todisappear to mine.
I ended up being on my team andI wore away that relationship
based on my dictatorialleadership style, and I was just
stunned that the erosion ofthis relationship took place.
I really didn't understand itand at the time I had a deep
(06:23):
faith then.
Obviously it's grown over theyears, but I would still say I
had a deep faith.
It was real, it was authentic.
I was studying the Bible, I wasgoing to church, but what wasn't
resonating is the discipleshipthat I was getting while I was
studying and learning scripture.
I wasn't always consistentlyapplying it to work.
(06:44):
I would apply it to how I wasparenting my children.
I would apply it to friendships, you know, in my community or
the relationships that I had atchurch.
But when it came to loving yourneighbor at work, I really
didn't know how to do that.
I didn't know how to havehealthy boundaries in line.
How do you love across, youknow, boss type employee
(07:05):
relationships.
So I had to learn a lot, butthe loss of that friendship due
to my poor leadership stylereally just woke me up.
It opened my eyes to I neededto learn how to lead and I
needed to learn what God saidabout leading.
And so that's what I did.
(07:26):
I went on this journey and I'vebeen on this journey for a
couple of decades now, because Istarted in leadership right
around probably your 2000.
I started just really exploringlike what did I have to change
about myself at the workplace tofor people to see my faith in
action, even if I wasn't talkingabout my faith?
(07:48):
And that's what I mean.
How do you bring God to work?
It's by your actions.
People can speak louder thanwords.
Your, your actions are theoutflow from really what's
inside of you, and so if youractions are not marrying up with
what the word says, thenthere's no way that people will
be able to see the God in you,and I had to learn that.
(08:10):
And so what are some of thethings that I had to stop doing?
And some people out there whoare listening, who work with me
today, might find this comical, because I am known at work today
for one who does not swear.
And, matter of fact, whenpeople swear around me at work,
it's often followed by anapology to me, even if there's
(08:31):
like 15 people in the room, andso I'm definitely known for that
today.
But it wasn't that way.
A couple, you know, years, youknow a couple of decades ago I
was a sailor with the best ofthem.
And what do I mean by sailor?
It's often said that you put abunch of people out on the
sailboat in the Navy and you'regoing to find some foul language
(08:52):
.
Well, you would have found foullanguage coming out of my mouth
, not proud of it, but it's true, and I would say one of my most
cringy words that I hear todaymakes me just go inward is the F
word, and that word actuallyfrequented my mouth quite a bit.
So, by the grace of God, to hisglory, he really, I would say,
(09:17):
convicted me to stop swearing.
And people may find that funny, but at the end of the day, god
says in Ephesians 4.29, we cancheck myself later.
I believe it says that leteverything you say being an
encouragement to those who hearit.
And you know, foul language canactually put up a barrier from
(09:39):
hearing just the goodness andthe truth of the Lord because
it's not pure of heart.
So I was definitely convictedand I made that language change
to honor God and peoplerecognized it and it started to
create an opportunity for peopleto say why are you no longer
swearing?
And that led to conversationsof faith and so God naturally
(10:00):
just started showing up withoutme having to be premeditated
about how do I bring him to workwith me.
The next thing.
So, for those who know me,again, this might make you take
a pause and take a seat, but Iused to love me some Marlboro
lights.
Oh yeah, I could smoke with thebest of them.
I loved the nicotine and it was.
(10:22):
It was a way to help me staythin and it also was a stress
relief for me.
And I again God startedconvicting me and I knew that my
temple was His and that helived inside of me and that I
really started to.
I needed to honor my body, tohonor the Lord, and I also had
(10:43):
little children.
I was a model for them and itwas.
It wasn't good, it just was nota healthy healthy excuse me
lifestyle choice, and so thatwas the next thing I did is I
quit the Marlboro lights.
I'm proud to say that I havenot picked up one since 2007.
Took me a while to to knock thehabit, and I did, and I'm super
proud of that because that wasprobably one of the hardest
(11:07):
habits that I've had to kick tothe curb and again, by the grace
of God, I've been able to dothat.
The next thing I did was moreabout my approach to
relationships at work, and thiswas, instead of making it all
about business, it would be moreabout what was I learning in
(11:28):
the morning during my devotionaltime.
So I'm pretty pretty, very mucha morning person when it comes
to when I choose to spend mytime with the Lord, and I've
been doing it consistently nowfor years.
But there's always a lessonthat God teaches me every
morning, and what I've learnedis it's a rainbow word, and that
(11:50):
means it's an on time for nowword that I'm not only supposed
to apply to my life, but chancesare, god is going to have
someone directly in front of mewho's going to need that word,
and so I started to payattention to what people were
going through or you knowchallenges, or you know periods
of joy and I could connect itand relate it directly back to
(12:13):
what I was learning that morningand it was wild.
I started to connect the dotsto literally what God was
telling me in the morningthrough my quiet time, to what
was being lived out not only inmy life but in the lives of the
people around me, and so itreally created this cool
atmosphere for me again tonaturally sew into people the
word of God, because God wasgiving me real time word for the
(12:36):
people that were directly infront of me.
And it is just, it's incrediblewhen you start to see those
seeds that you're planting andthen, over time, the seeds
sprout, they're watered, theharvest starts to come and I've
seen many, many people who havenot had faith, who I've worked
(12:57):
with, find their faith and I cansee, just through how God works
, that he used me as one of hispeople to plant those seeds and
it's really cool.
So just being aware, you knowchanging, you know, not just my
morning time is not just for mebeing fed, but it's for me to
(13:17):
feed others, my family, mycoworkers and then just anybody
God is putting in front of me.
He also really started to gearup my heart, not just to pray
for the people that I loved mostwho were connected to me, my
family but really start to seemy teammates from a spiritual
(13:37):
lens where I could say that youknow these folks very well could
be the people that God iscalling into his family and I
need to love them as God lovesthem.
That's why God says love theLord, your God, with all your
heart, mind and soul, and loveyour neighbor as yourself.
And so to do that, well, how doyou start to grow a heart of
(13:59):
love for the people that you'reworking with?
Well, for me, it was prayer, thepower of prayer.
I literally, for every teammatethat I have and that I work
closely with, I have a prayerwall and I have their name on it
.
I have a declared scripture andI pray over these people.
I do it today for the teammatesthat I work with.
I pray over them all the time.
(14:21):
I could be sitting in a meetingand I could quietly just be
praying as the meeting is goingon, just because I know that God
is always at work around us andI'm always inviting him into my
meetings, my conversations withpeople.
I let him do the leading, withthe Holy Spirit to the leading.
But I had to start that manyyears ago, that practice of
(14:42):
starting to see people how Godsees them.
And that starts with prayer.
When you start to pray overGod's people and God does what
God does, he opens the door forus to share our faith if we're
willing and ready.
He says, to shod your feet withthe gospel of peace, and so
when you are ready, he will opena door that no man can shut.
(15:07):
And next thing you know, you'rein the workplace and you're
sharing your testimony of faithwith someone else who needed to
hear it, because next thing youknow, they're starting to gain
faith.
And that's how it works.
That's God's economy.
He works in and through hispeople.
So we need to be ready to, youknow, be obedient to the work
(15:27):
that he's calling us to, andthat means God has to come to
work with us.
The other thing that is reallycool that I have seen throughout
my career is the fact thatpeople generally, when they,
when I'm in relationship withthem, when I get to know them,
they start to trust me becausethey know that my heart is for
(15:52):
their best interest.
It doesn't mean that I alwaysget it right, it doesn't mean
that I always know what the bestinterest is, but they trust
enough to let me in, and thenthat just further opens up doors
.
Sometimes it's the questioncomes will you mentor me
spiritually?
Will you host a Bible study?
(16:13):
Can I join the Bible study?
Can you teach me the Bible?
And I have just had theprivilege of seeing many people
come to faith and grow in theirfaith.
Many people have a faith, theyclaim Jesus, but they don't
really know what it means tofollow him, and they don't
really know what the first steplooks like, and so God will
create an opportunity for thatfirst step to be taken, and that
(16:38):
I have the privilege of youknow leading it, leading that
first step, which is really cool.
The other thing that I just loveis when God opens the door for
me to invite someone to come tochurch with me.
So if someone has a faith, they're curious, or they're
starting to come to faith, or Idon't know if God just presses
it on my heart that no, this isthe time I want you to invite
(17:00):
them, and I do, and I haveinvited people of all faith
backgrounds to church.
It could be an atheist, itcould be an agnostic, it could
be a Muslim, it could be a Hindu, it could be any faith outside
of the Christian faith.
It doesn't matter.
If God puts someone on my heartto invite them to my church
(17:20):
which is a Christian, you know, based faith I'm going to invite
them in and from there I havejust let God do the rest,
because it's all his work to doanyway.
So what I want to do now is justtake a moment and I want to
share with you some scripturesthat you can use to anchor
yourself in, to give youconfidence, to start to be
(17:43):
intentional.
If you haven't, to bring Godwith you to work, let him live
in and through you.
And if you're already doingthat awesome, I encourage you to
keep on, because God has suchan inheritance for you in His
kingdom.
So the first one collage in 323through 24.
Whatever you do, work at itwith all your heart as working
(18:06):
for the Lord, not for humanmasters, since you know that you
will receive an inheritancefrom the Lord as a reward.
It is the Lord Christ you areserving.
He is so faithful.
I didn't even realize that wordinheritance from the Lord was
in that verse and I justprophesied over whoever's
listening that if you arebringing him to work with you,
(18:28):
you have an inheritance thatwill be your reward.
Praise the Lord.
The next one is Deuteronomy 2812.
The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty,
to send rain on your land inseason and to bless all the work
of your hands.
You will lend to many nationsbut will borrow from none.
(18:50):
This is incredible.
When we follow the ways of theLord and we work for Him, there
is nothing he can't do.
He opens the storehouses ofheaven.
That is so encouraging to me.
It's encouraging to me that, inan economy that we are looking
(19:11):
at day in and day out, whereit's unstable, the macro
environment is unknown, thestock market is all over the
place what we can rest on is, ifwe are working for the Lord, he
is going to protect us, he'sgoing to provide for us and he's
opening the doors of heaven.
That's encouraging.
Next one John 1335.
(19:32):
By this, everyone will knowthat you are my disciples.
If you love one another, ifwe're praying over people, if
we're seeing people how God seesthem, they will know that we
are the disciples of Christbecause we love one another.
I have two more scriptures foryou.
Second Thessalonians, 3.7through 8.
(19:56):
For you, yourselves know howyou ought to follow our example.
We were not idle when we werewith you, nor did we eat
anyone's food without paying forit.
On the contrary, we workednight and day, laboring and
toiling, so that we would not bea burden to any of you.
So this is saying that we arenot to have a free pass in this
(20:18):
world.
That God blesses when we work, and work is worship unto Him.
And lastly, matthew 1032.
Whoever acknowledges me beforeothers, I will also acknowledge
before my Father in heaven.
Think about all the people thatyou work with day in and day
out.
It could be your teammates, itcould be vendors that you're
(20:41):
interfacing with.
It could be customers.
It doesn't matter who you'reinterfacing with.
If we're not giving testimonyof our faith and witnessing to
who Jesus is, we're missing agreat opportunity and I would
never want to get into heavenand just have the Lord, and I'm
sure it's going to happen.
There's people that I didn'tbring the word of the Lord to
(21:04):
the testimony of Jesus to when Ineeded to, for fear or whatever
the reason may be.
Maybe I just wasn't aware andpresent to what he was doing in
a moment.
It was a missed opportunity andI just thank him that his grace
and mercy covers all thosemissed opportunities, so that he
will know that my faith.
He will say to me good, welldone, good and faithful servant,
(21:26):
that you acknowledge me beforeothers, so therefore I will
acknowledge you before my Fatherin heaven.
It's absolutely incredible.
So some of the questions that Iget frequently when I talk about
or encourage people to bringtheir faith to work is have I
ever met resistance Meaning, have I ever gotten trouble?
And I love this question likeam I going to go to the
(21:49):
principal's office, like in highschool?
And I actually had to do thatquite often because I was a very
strong personality.
But to the workplace, theprincipal's office, I would
liken it to HR, human Resources, and I apologize to my dear
colleague right now who leadstalent at our organization.
If you're listening, you know Ilove you and I think the world
(22:12):
of your organization.
But I'm going to liken it tothat being called, called into
the principal's office.
And the answer is absolutely Ihave.
And one of the my teammates itwas someone who actually worked
for me.
She made a complaint on me thatI was really being forceful and
(22:34):
it made her uncomfortable thatI was always talking about my
faith and she wanted me to stop.
She did.
She wanted me to refrain fromever mentioning anything about
my faith at work.
And so I received this feedbackand at first I was.
I didn't know how to reallyprocess it because I really
(22:55):
didn't see myself as forcing myfaith on other people, which I
never would want to do.
That, you know, you can't makesomeone believe in God.
I mean, that's God's job, notmine.
But what I do try to beintentional on is to be
authentic, and so if there's aconversation taking place and it
prompts me to think ofsomething in my faith, then I'm
(23:18):
going to share, because that'sjust who I am, but it's never
intended to be aggressive oroverreaching or to impose my
faith on someone else.
And so what I did is I heardthe feedback and then I really
spent some time in prayer and Ifelt the best thing was to
actually have a real authenticconversation with my employee.
(23:41):
And so I took the person tolunch and I just said hey,
listen, this is a safe space.
I never want to make you feeluncomfortable, but I just want
to have.
I just want to click in deeper, like what is really going on?
What's making you uncomfortable?
What are some examples?
I don't want to, you know, unnaturally force faith on you.
So just help me understand yourperspective, so, one, I can
(24:05):
respect you and I can meet youwhere you're at.
And then, two, you can, youknow, maybe listen to my
perspective, where I'm comingfrom, and we can, you know, find
balance together, because Icertainly don't want to just
turn off who I am and anyway, that approach and believe it was
God led, just opened this doorto this incredible conversation
(24:27):
and trust was just ignitedbetween the two of us.
And it was beautiful.
And, you know, not everythingturns out this way, but this
person came to know the Lord andI got to witness her faith
journey, going from someone whowas pretty opposed to the
Christian faith to fullyembracing it and walking it out
(24:48):
today and actually leading herfamily in the faith.
And it's beautiful and just oneof my dearest friends today.
And so the resistance yes, I'vemet it.
I'm sure there will.
I have many other stories, ofcourse, as well, but that one is
just special to my heartbecause the person on the other
side, you know it, just God usedit to blossom an incredible
(25:11):
relationship that I'm trulythankful for.
I've also done the other thingwhere I thought someone was a
Christian and I was just reallybold in my faith and I was
always excited and sharing andDidn't even realize that the
person you know was a baby, babyChristian.
And the faith that I justexuded actually spurred them on,
(25:36):
and now they are a beacon inthe church, they are a pillar of
faith, and had I known thatthey were not where I thought
they were from a spiritualmaturity perspective, I probably
wouldn't have shared as much.
So that is a lesson where Godwill keep you naive to get his
(25:57):
work done, and I'm thankful forthat because had I known again,
my flesh would have gotten theway.
And Then the other thing have Iever received, you know,
support from my teammates whenit comes to maybe?
I'm in a really hard spot and Ineed love and support from my
teammates and the answer is yesand amen.
(26:17):
My family has gone throughseveral things, most notably
when it comes to teammatesleaning in hard.
Is I mentioned During episodeone that I have a son, who was,
who has seen many miracles, andI'm talking Miracles that you
would see in the New Testament, and I'll talk about those in
(26:39):
future episodes.
But point is, as he was bornwith a congenital heart disease.
He's had north of eightOpen-heart surgeries throughout
his life.
He has met God multiple timesand I have been on multiple
teams at various seasons in ourlife when those teams what my
son would go through you know apoint where he's on full-life
(27:02):
support we don't know what'sgonna happen to him and teams
would rally behind us Just inlove and support and honoring
where we're at, and they got tosee the result of God, the
miraculous happen.
It's been absolutely incredible.
So, again, god is just.
He blesses both ways.
You know, I'm a blessing attimes to those who need to hear
(27:24):
the testimony of faith and thenI am blessed by those who return
in love.
So those are just a fewexamples of you know what does
it actually look like to be inthe workplace and have God with
you?
I'm gonna pivot and just talkabout what you can do today if
(27:47):
you are feeling, you know, drawnto bring God to work with you
and it just some of this isgonna sound so basic, and why?
Because it is.
It's literally back to thebasics is what God talks about
Honestly, and the TenCommandments right Know your
teammates.
Take time to get to know people.
(28:07):
Love people.
You can't love someone if youdon't know them, and so you got
to know them.
Do you know how many kids theyhave?
Do you know their children'sbirthdays?
Do you know what their favoritecolors are, their favorite
hobbies, their vacations, theirjoys, their dreams, their
aspirations, their sorrows?
Do you know them?
And it takes time to To get toknow people.
(28:31):
I will say this, though the moreyou know people, the more trust
will be exhibited in the higherperformance you will have on
your team.
You will be raising up highperforming teams.
It's just a result.
When we lead the way the Lordtells us to lead, the fruit and
performance bears itself.
(28:52):
Naturally, there's always goingto be time where your teammates
need you, needs arise.
We are in a fallen world.
There's tragedy all around us.
So can we step up and meet thebasic needs of our teammates
when they need us?
Can we give them a handwrittencard?
Can we give them a meal?
Give them gift cards for gas ifthey need gas?
(29:13):
What?
What resources do they need, and how do we make meet those
basic needs as a team?
Invite someone to a Bible study.
If you feel like God is openinga door, invite them to a Bible
study, and if there's not onehappening that you can invite
them into start your own.
Start your own Bible study.
(29:34):
Maybe this is the time we'regot a saying it's time to get up
right.
Go from what do we say, get offof the, the milk of faith, and
let's step into the meat andpotatoes of faith.
So maybe you should start aBible study and invite some of
your teammates into it.
Pray like I said before, pray byname, with scripture over each
(29:56):
teammate.
And you may be thinking toyourself there's so many
scriptures, what scriptureshould I pray over my team?
Ask God.
God will tell you and you can.
You can sense, you know what issomeone walking through, where
are they at in their life and ifyou're not, you know here in
the clarion call from the Lordof what scripture it is.
Use your friend Google.
Google is always good If ateammate is struggling with X.
(30:20):
Google good scripture for X andjust start declaring that
scripture over them every day.
Invite someone to church withyou.
It's always great.
We am my church here inCharlotte, north Carolina.
I go to Freedom House and wealways Say sit with me.
So we have sit with me cardsand vitamin.
I'm gonna save a seat for youand I want you to sit with me
(30:42):
and share your faith.
Just why do you believe?
You know it's not.
You know people don't want tobe beaten over the head With you
.
Know, believe, believe, believeif they don't really even
understand the heart behind it.
And so share.
Why do you believe?
What have you walked throughthat has gotten you to a place
for why you believe?
And if you don't know why youbelieve, well, maybe this is the
(31:06):
very next step in yourrelationship with God for you to
explore with him.
Why do you believe and you gotto be anchored in that.
It's so very important Sharewhat your relationship with God
looks like.
Do you do a daily devotion?
Is it in the morning, like me,is it, or is it at night?
Do you celebrate with God whensomething goes well?
If so, what does that look like?
(31:27):
What does celebration look likeor mean to you?
Do you cry out to God whensomething is going wrong?
Does it bring comfort?
Why?
Just these simple things thatwe can share with people about
our relationship with God Reallyhelps to spur people on and
bring them into relationshipwith the Lord and Stand firm in
(31:52):
your truth.
Let it be wrapped in love allaround you.
I mean, people Don't want toknow what you're against, they
want to know what you're for,and sometimes we Miss the
opportunity to love someone wellbecause we're trying to be
right in a conversation Aboutwhat we're against and we can't
(32:16):
even help people move forwardtoward what we're for.
And I think if we really lookat what Jesus did he spent more
time teaching people about whathe was for and helping people
get out of their sin and movetowards relationship with God
then, um, you know really browbeating them with what they were
(32:40):
against.
And so those are just a couplethings that you can do to take
what you've heard today and moveit into action.
God revealing your way at work.
I hope you enjoyed it.

really good conversation aboutit, but he is a CEO who knows
how to love his team and heknows how to love well, and he
loves the Lord with all hisheart, mind and soul, and it was
just a beautiful, delightfulConversation that we had
together.
It was an hour long, so I amgonna break it into two parts.
