And welcome back to another episode of Ham Radio, a Stranger

(01:30):
Things podcast. On today's episode, we will be
breaking down the Stranger Things 5 date announcement
teaser trailer that we got at Tadum on May 31st.
Yes, and we are very excited to do our full scale breakdown.
We did a bit of a a mini breakdown when we recap Tadum,
but this is our full breakdown which we are very excited about.

(01:52):
So we start off the trailer withJoyce and will.
We see that Joyce's brown corduroy jacket from season 1 is
back. Her outfit and hair here look
very similar to season 1. So I think that's definitely a
call back. I'm really excited to get some
mini Joyce and Wilson's because we didn't get any in season 4
and we didn't really get much inseason 3.
So the camera starts on Joyce and we see her talking and she

(02:17):
says I think about that night all the time, the night it came
for you, the night all of this started and we'll response.
Everything changed. We failed, but we need to be
ready. I think this is very interesting
wording here because Joyce doesn't say he or that thing or
that monster. She says it came for you, which
basically what we got in season 4 and the speculation about, OK,

(02:39):
is the thing chasing Will Vecna or is it the Demogorgon?
Or is the Demogorgon chasing Will and Vecna kind of
facilitating that? There are questions left after
what we find out in season 4. So I think the word choice here
of it is very intentional and I'm excited because I think
we're finally going to find out in Season 5 what the thing

(02:59):
chasing Will was like Demo Gorgon, if it's Vecno, or some
combination of both. Yeah, and I find Joyce's
phrasing of this very interesting.
I mean, obviously this is just a, you know, a clip of a larger

(03:23):
conversation that they are having in this scene.
And we also don't even know whatepisode that this scene comes
from. So there's not a whole lot of
context that we really have to go on here because it seems the
way like she she says it, it sounds like they were in like
the middle of a conversation. So we don't know like what

(03:45):
prompted this conversation, but I I do think it's very
interesting, like you said, how she phrases it like it came from
you instead of like usually she would have said like that thing.
So I mean, I feel like maybe confirmation that yes, the
Demogorgon that the show tellingus, yes, the Demogorgon was the

(04:07):
one that took Will. Now, there's still a lot of
shrouded in mystery of what, youknow, caused the Demogorgon to
take Will, but I think this is the show's way of confirming
like, no, it was not not Vecna directly.
It was the Demogorgon that came and took Will on that night in

(04:29):
Season 1. But really I, I find what she
says here so very interesting and compelling is because you
know, I feel like for the past three seasons, like seasons 2-3
and four, we as an audience havekind of been made to think that

(04:51):
Joyce like has kind of put all of that behind her because she
doesn't really, she doesn't really bring it up.
Like certainly in season 4, she doesn't bring any of that up.
So it's like, you know, we're sort of made to believe like
she's just kind of let that go and she doesn't really think
about it anymore. But I really like how they're

(05:11):
like reaffirming like, no, it's still something she thinks
about. And I think it's not because of
what necessarily what happened to him.
I think it's because it's the why it happened to him.
And I think, you know, Joyce is a very smart lady, like, and she
understands that it came for Will for a specific reason

(05:38):
because it wanted him. And unless they put an end to
this is still going to keep coming back for Will.
That's kind of how I interpretedline that she says here believe
so yeah, it's like it's not for her.
It's not OK that you were taking.

(06:00):
It's still the the why and she still, you know, it's still a
fear that that she has about something, you know, else
happening, happening to Will and, and not just like from
season 1, but I mean, season 2 as well.
Like he was possessed and all that.
And because it wanted to possessing, you know, the mind
flare. And so, yeah, I found that very

(06:22):
interesting. And also it sets the tone for
season 5. Like, hey, we, we are going back
to November 6th, 1983, you know, when all this started and just,
you know, this the show's subtleway of, of, you know, bringing
the audience into the fold, which I really appreciated.
And I think you're right, this is the middle of a conversation.

(06:43):
Definitely. And I really like how the show
handles trauma. And we really saw that in season
4 especially. Any kind of trauma or grief is
not linear. It comes and it goes.
It can hit you all once and thenthere can be times when it's,
you know, out of your mind. And I do appreciate that they
could show that evolution because I feel like you look at

(07:03):
season 3, right? It's kind of out of sight, out
of mind. But then or you see it hit the
characters really hard. And I, I really like that
because it's, I think to me a more accurate depiction of grief
and trauma. Then you often get to see a lot
of times in media, it showed as either something that, you know,
you're crying, sobbing, angry, or you're numb, or you're like,

(07:26):
you're dealing with it, but thenyou doesn't come up again.
And really, if anyone's experienced, you know, trauma
and grief in real life, it's notone thing.
It comes and it goes. Certain things can trigger you
or set you off. And so I, I appreciate that they
show that kind of that roller coaster of emotions and the way
that those things can and, and will impact you.

(07:49):
And I'm really excited for five to see all that come together
and for them to get some answers, but also also the
audience to get some answers, which I think will definitely
help the characters like heal and and move forward.
I mean, that trauma and that grief will always be there.
But you know, finding answers, finding truth, finding what's
really been going on, finally putting an end to everything.

(08:12):
I think we'll we'll definitely help them in that that healing
process. So intersped with Joyce and
Wills voices from this scene, weget scenes from seasons one
through 4. I would get the most scenes from
seasons one and four, which I think is very telling.
As a Duffer Brothers have said that season 5 will bring things
full circle. So from season 1 we get the

(08:33):
search party looking for Will, Joyce and Jonathan looking for
Will in the woods, The boys and L biking at night, The boys
finding L in the woods, Joyce and her Christmas lights, Hopper
and the first responders at the quarry, Brenner and the
scientists at the lab, 11 in thewater tank, Will's abduction and
the van scene. Then from season 2 we get the
boys dressed up as Ghostbusters at the middle school, Hopper in

(08:54):
the tunnels, Will in the now memory with the mind flare,
Nancy and Jonathan at the lab, and 11 closing the gate.
From season 3 we get the gang atthe hospital and the star court
mall, the my player again, and Belly's death.
From season 4 we get Max at Belly's grave, Eddie in the
upside down, Vecna in the crew house attic, Steve landing the

(09:14):
upside Down, Max running from Vecna, Nancy shooting Vecna,
Elle throwing off the guards, Hopper fighting the demagorgon,
Murray with his flamethrower, Max levitating at the cemetery,
and Elle and the others on the hillside.
You know what I found very, veryinteresting while like in that
part of the date announcement teaser, when they started

(09:36):
showing all the, the clips from the previous seasons, other than
the fact that at that point I was like thinking, Oh my gosh,
this is all it's going to be. Just they're just going to show
like flashback to other seasons, which I would have been very
disappointed at, but thankfully we didn't.
But whenever they started like showing the the flashbacks,

(10:03):
Joyce is in voice over when she says The night it came for you.
And overlaid to her voice over is that scene of when Mike,
Dustin and Lucas find Elle in the woods.
Just found it very interesting that.
Yeah, for sure. And I had the same thought too,

(10:23):
about when the teaser trailer started playing and they were
showing the clips from previous seasons right after we got the
part about Joyce and Will talking in season 5.
And I checked and the clips lastfor about a minute.
So they're about half the trailer.
So I, I think a lot of fans likeyou and I had that sense of, Oh

(10:44):
my God, it's all we're gonna get.
Just Joyce and Will and the restless, just a clip show.
That that was my thought too. And I was very happy and excited
when it, it changed from a clip show to new footage from Season
5. I I think we all was a bit of a
bit of a fake out, I guess, in that I think they were trying to
show us kind of what stuff mightcome up in five and what

(11:07):
direction they were going. So it hits harder, I think when
you get the new footage from season 5 that comes the
second-half. But yeah, I also had that
thought while watching. I was like, Oh my gosh, if I
just sat through a lot of cringe, that was at todom for
this. I mean, it's going to be fairly
frustrating, but luckily we did not get that.
Thank, thank goodness. And I also agree with you that I

(11:30):
think there is more to Will. An 11 story is based on what
we'd gotten in foreign interviews.
I thought back in 2022 was OK, that there was going to be these
parallel storylines where, you know, it would take two halves
of a hole to solve this. I know a lot of people were
thinking, oh, it's going to be Will and Elle are going to be
the focus to be more of a team up.
And I would have been fine with that too.

(11:51):
But I'm excited that I was rightabout that.
They're following through because seeing this two halves
of a whole, these parallel journeys coming together in the
end to defeat this this evil, I'm really excited for that.
And I think it gives both Noah and Millie a chance to shine
alongside Winona and David, which I'm really excited for.
I think it's like a great use oftheir talents.

(12:12):
So I'm I'm super excited for that.
And I, too, would like to know what happened that night in the
lab because you make a good point that OK, Brenna pushed her
too far, but if she was in a tank, she couldn't have gotten
herself out of the tank, it doesn't look like.
So somebody would have pulled her out.
And then did she immediately runaway or do they move her
somewhere else for safety? And then she was able to like, I

(12:35):
don't know, they didn't secure the room or something and she's
able to bust out from there in the ensuing chaos.
But if that thing's wreaking havoc, the lab, how did it not
get her? Unless we know that Doctor's
controlling things. Or maybe he intentionally let
her escape, made sure that it didn't hurt her so that he he
could get to her later. Because he clearly needs Will
and Elle alive for something. I think that's pretty clear at

(12:58):
this point. He would have killed them ages
ago if he didn't absolutely needthem alive.
So I'm very interested to find out in season 5 why is he
keeping them alive? What is going on there that he
needs them for? What has he been orchestrating
here? And getting back to what Will
and Drish are talking about in the clip, Will says that they

(13:19):
failed. And I think the we fail part is
about season 4, not the previousseasons.
Because up to that point our heroes always won and they saved
the day by the end of the season.
And season 4 is really the only season we have where they think
they've won. And then we see everyone meet up
at the end and realize, no, I mean, we, we didn't win.

(13:40):
I mean, they didn't lose exactly, but they kind of just,
you know, push things off. It was a stopgap measure, not a
full win like it had been previously.
So I'm really interested to see more about what Will's talking
about there. Is there another quote failures
or something else that's happening between 4:00 when we
pick up in five that's happened where they've tried other things
and those things have failed or something has failed.

(14:02):
So I'm really curious to see what the quote failure is that
he's talking about here. And then we have the date
announcements and the barn scene.
So we've got Joyce in her corduroy jacket and a final
shirt while holding her trusty axe.
In front of her is a bulging wooden door that's bolted.
Looks like something is trying to come through it.
Behind her, from left to right is what looks like Will Robin,

(14:25):
an unknown person. Above her in what looks like a
loft space filled with hay is Derek Turnbow.
Jake Connolly, who plays Derek, can be seen in the same rainbow
striped outfits. You know they're behind the
scenes pics and footage where Derek, Erica and Robin are at
the barn and later on in the teaser trailer museum in that
outfit as well. There's also a previous behind

(14:46):
the scenes pic of what appears to be a stunt double in the same
shirt at the barn. So based on the episode Titus, I
think what we're seeing here is the Turnbow trap scene where
they are using Derek as bait as part of their mission.
In a previous behind the scenes pic, there's a billboard covered
in vines that reads Turnbow Development and Realty.
New development coming soon witha smiling family underneath.

(15:08):
Since we've never heard of the Turnbow family before now, my
guess is that the family built alarge part of Hawkins and Vega.
Targeting Derek has something todo with what happened when his
family moved there in the 1950s.It's also possible that if
Derek's family bought, sold and built a good chunk of Hawkins or
all of it, then his family wouldhave access to plans,

(15:31):
schematics, that kind of thing. Which if you were trying to
figure out how to infiltrate something or, you know, let's
say there's something to do withlike a fault line that you know,
they need to know about or something about topography,
that's a good place to find thatinformation.
So I'm wondering if maybe his role here is part bait but also
part information. It's also possible that the it's

(15:55):
also possible that Turnbow Roti sold the Krills their house when
Henry and his family moved there.
And then Vecna needs something from him.
Like we know when he kills people and attacks them that he
gains things from them, their abilities, their memories.
So maybe there's something that Derek has as part of that family
that Vecna needs or is trying toconfirm my feeling between the

(16:18):
title and the way they have him positioned where you can see him
and he's, you know, behind them, but he's kind of protected.
But you can see him if you came to the barn door and you've got
everyone flanking her from behind.
Next, we have a scene of Karen and Holly.
In it, we can see Karen holding a frightened Holly as the lights
flash around them. Holly is wearing the same shirt

(16:40):
that we saw her in in the behindthe scenes teaser trailer, where
she comes down from her bedroom into the kitchen and looks
scared. In the behind the scenes teaser,
her hair looks drenched, but in this shot her hair is dry, which
seems to indicate that this scene with Karen takes place in
between those two scenes. But there's not as much to
unpack apart from confirming what we already know.

(17:00):
I would hazard a guess that they're either something's
happening to Ted here or something is coming at them
because or there's something about Karen's past because I
mean Holly supposed to only be about 7 years.
I mean, I don't think she's beenalive long enough to have a past
like I have a tortured past thatVecna could be using, especially

(17:21):
from what we know that she's, you know, kind of the protected
younger child. And while she has picked up on
the weird stuff going on in Hawkins, she's also has that
carefree this to her. Like at the end of four, she
says to care and you know, but mommy, it's snowing.
She still has that child like innocence at that time.
So I, I don't think there's anything in Holly's cool past.

(17:43):
I mean that that could be using maybe something in Karen's sure,
but I don't know if that would be as scary for Holly.
So I feel like if that is it, there's got to be something else
that he's doing to scare her or freak her out.
And it does make me wonder basically that scene we got of
Holly in the kitchen from the behind the scenes teaser, if
something does happen to Karen here or maybe something is

(18:06):
happening to Ted, just because of the her expression, the way
she's freaked out, but also kindof a bit not backing away, but
she's not lunging forward. So that would be my guess.
And since we have that behind the scenes shot of Joyce and
Karen talking in the kitchen andKaren looks really odd, like
almost doll like, whereas Joyce looks normal.

(18:28):
I'm wondering if maybe it's a vision of of some kind.
You know, we know he messed withNancy by showing her visions of
monsters and her family being murdered.
Maybe it's maybe it's Nancy. I'm like, maybe he's doing the
reverse here. He's showing them something
happening to Nancy and and Mike, but it's happening in their
living rooms where they're like confused because Nancy was in a
Vecna trance when that happened to her.

(18:49):
But if they're in the like kitchen slash living room, it
would be weird to suddenly see that.
So maybe something like that where he's using the reverse to
like scare them or to try to convince them that this has
happened and they're like confused as to what they're
they're seeing. There's an interview that Gayton
did a while back where he was talking about the setup for
Season 5 and how in Season 1 thething that was underlying

(19:13):
everything was we got to find Will.
And he said there's something like that for Season 5.
And he obviously couldn't say what it was at the time.
But if it is Holly going missingand they are bringing it full
circle in that way, I could definitely see that being it
that if it brings it full circle.
But also it's it's a bit of a, you know, a a different
adventure in the sense that in Season 1 it was OK, where is

(19:36):
Will, what happened? What's going on?
Where is in Season 5, they're gonna know it's Vecna.
But as the description for the season says, you know, he's
disappeared. His plans and whereabouts
unknown. There's they spend, you know, a
year and a half to figure what this guy's doing, and then he
snatches up Holly. My impression is that this would
be a surprise to them that there's nothing that's indicated

(19:57):
Holly prior to this, which if that is the case, I think it's
very clever because we've seen little things over the season.
That seem to indicate that Hollyis aware and and knows more than
maybe she's letting on or then maybe people around her think
that she does or willing to see.So it would make her a good
candidate. In fact, I was going to grab
somebody that she would know things he might need or if he's

(20:20):
trying to get to 11 and will if he's trying to draw 11 out.
If that's part of the plan. Holly's definitely a good
candidate, sadly because she knows enough to be valuable and
is loved by these people so much.
They'd do anything to go get herback, but not enough to maybe

(20:43):
see all the red flags Like you know in fact is taking a
different form. Or we know how manipulative he
is and how he makes things look like other things.
She'd be young enough and just naive enough to not know that
that's possible for him to bamboozle her in that way the
way he did with 11 back in the the 70s.
So she would be a good candidateif that's what he's after.

(21:04):
And to me it would make sense for why Karen has a bigger role
this season and why they did focus on her a lot in season 4
to set this up. Personally, I think if they are
doing that, I think we will get some kind of scene in episode 1
right after the jump, like picking up in in spring of 86
where they do feel Karen in. Because I feel like if I haven't

(21:24):
done that and then Holly goes missing, that's a lot of
exposition and explanation to get through.
And it wouldn't really be believable that Karen would just
like 100% get on board with all this craziness.
But if they've explained what's going on to her the previous
year and then this happens, I feel like that creates a better
jumping off point for her character and would explain why
we're seeing a lot of night shoots.

(21:45):
We're seeing what could be a lotof Wheelers scenes.
We see a lot of like Buyer's Wheeler interactions going on
here, which would make sense if that's what's going on.
All right, so Next up we have Lucas sitting at Max's bedside
at the hospital. Max's arms and legs are no
longer in cast and it appears that her broken bones have
healed. This bodes well for perhaps her

(22:07):
eyesight and perhaps her face may have healed as well.
We don't know. But it does look like physically
she is on the mend. And it seems like the challenge
here is reaching her mentally asher physical body appears to
either have healed or is healing.
Lucas is wearing the red and white jacket we saw him we saw
him in in other behind the scenes pics.

(22:28):
It's appears to be a core look for him this season.
This hospital room looks different than the one we saw in
season 4, which could mean they've moved Max to a long term
care room, which if she's still in a coma a year and a half
later, would make sense. So the room you're placed in
when you're receiving direct care after something happens
would be different from a longerterm or longer care room.

(22:51):
So that's what this indicates tome and that's our show.
