(00:00):
Hi, I'm Tyler Simone and this is the Happily Self-Conscious podcast, the show where it's
(00:06):
cool to be self-conscious.
As a personal development enthusiast, I love to learn how I can become better in all areas
of life and I want to share with you transformative tips and tricks to help you also become your
best self.
Together, we'll learn how we can become more self-conscious.
Let's do it.
(00:26):
Welcome to episode number 16 of the podcast.
(00:46):
I hope you're doing well.
For today's episode, I really wanted to talk about discipline.
As I get older, as I get more clear on what I want my life to look like, my goals, my
desires are becoming more clear, being disciplined has become so, so important and I realize
(01:10):
that without discipline, without the drive to keep going or the ability to discipline
yourself to make sure that you're doing what needs to be done, nothing gets accomplished.
Discipline can only take you so far.
Writing your goals down, they can only take you so far, but discipline will get you there.
(01:33):
And the thing about it is that discipline is something only we can cultivate for ourselves.
There are so many things happening in life all at once for all of us, but having discipline
is what allows some people to progress and the lack of it is what keeps others from progressing
(01:54):
in life.
Discipline may start with motivation, but it doesn't stop there.
Motivation is equivalent to starting a car.
It feels good.
When you start the car, you're ready to go, literally.
You are in the car, you have an idea of where you're going, you turn your favorite song
(02:15):
on and you have a journey ahead of you.
But once you've got the car going, you have to drive to get to where you're supposed to
be going.
Getting in the car is not enough.
Starting the car is not enough.
And that's similar to motivation.
When the motivation to do something runs out, all you have left is your discipline to keep
(02:41):
going no matter what.
And discipline is interesting because when you take actions in the direction that you
want to go, you get more excited about it.
And that creates motivation to keep going.
And because you're seeing progress from taking those actions, discipline, it sort of develops
(03:02):
in order to make more progress.
This beautiful cycle starts once you get into it.
But without taking those actions, discipline can be really hard to cultivate, especially
if you have trouble with maintaining personal drive.
I was watching a video recently where Jim Rohn was speaking about this and he mentioned
(03:26):
that it doesn't matter how smart you are or how much you know if you don't use it, position,
status, your education level, your income level, none of that matters if you don't have discipline.
And it's so true.
You have to apply what you've learned.
It's called applied knowledge.
(03:47):
But the root of all of this is choice, really, deciding to continue, deciding that you want
something so bad that you're willing to continue to pursue it.
Do you love to read, want to get more into reading or just really enjoy personal development
(04:08):
like I do?
I invite you to join me over in the Happily Self Conscious Book Club, a free virtual book
club brought to you by bookclubs.com, designed for anyone who is looking to connect with

(04:29):
ways that we can become so much more effective in the way that we show up in the world, personally
and professionally.
We are all so different.
We're in different stages.
We've learned different lessons so far, but we do have one thing in common.
We are looking to become even better, smarter and more efficient.
(04:50):
I will be joining you and the other book club members live once a month to discuss our most
recent book club pick, which will be an inspiring and life changing self help novel.

(05:36):
When you've gone a long time without pursuing something, yes, it can be hard to build discipline
because you have no results that prove that your efforts are actually worth it.
You might have little to no proof that what you do actually matters because you haven't
done anything you truly deem worthy in a while, but we can't expect to see results without
(06:02):
putting the work in.
There are circumstances where people are given things that they honestly haven't worked for,
but that's not the case for most people.
And in those types of situations, success, quote unquote, whatever that means doesn't
last because there's no discipline to sustain it in order to hold on to something that you
(06:24):
desire.
You have to be disciplined in your effort to maintain it.
When your discipline waivers, things start to fall apart.
And so self discipline is truly a lifestyle, I guess it's a way of just being.
It's a daily choice that must be made to obtain and maintain your deepest desires.
(06:49):
One of the things that I've been disciplined with lately is waking up at 5am, bright and
early every day during the week.
Do I always feel like getting up at 5am?
Heck no, but I do know that it is the only way that I can make sure that I get through
the morning routine that I created so that I set myself up for a productive and positive
(07:13):
day, keeping this promise to myself and choosing to be disciplined in this way has allowed
me to move toward my goals and it's proven to be very necessary for me.
The way that my day flows now is so much better and that alone gives me more of a desire to
(07:36):
stay disciplined, but there is no way that I would have discovered that if I hadn't made
the choice to stay disciplined in waking up at 5am.
I truly think that it is feelings that stop our discipline, that and life circumstances
of course.
And yes, life is not always smooth and things happen, that's the case for all of us, but
(08:01):
there is something to be said for the ability to do it anyway.
Keeping a promise to yourself is huge and that is self-discipline.
We all have that dark side of us that speaks up when we're trying to do something new or
something that is actually in our best interest, it's the enemy within.
(08:24):
That voice can be so loud, it can make us feel like what we're trying to do isn't worth
it or that we're not worthy or question why we want to do such a thing in the first place.
But if we listen to this voice, all bets are off.
We can't even reach discipline.
(08:45):
Every time that enemy within you speaks, you have a choice to do it anyway.
To take the step, despite what it's saying to you, this is what separates those who accomplish
their goals and those who don't bother going after theirs.
There is this great book that I think you should read, it's called The Motivation Manifesto
(09:09):
by Brendan Burchard and it goes through the nine declarations to claim your personal power.
The nine declarations are, we shall meet life with full presence and power.
We should reclaim our agenda.
We shall defeat our demons.
We shall advance with abandon.
(09:30):
We shall practice joy and gratitude.
We shall not break integrity.
We shall amplify love.
We shall inspire greatness and we shall slow time.
Doesn't that sound good?
The topic of discipline is woven throughout that book.
It comes up multiple times and I think that that is for a reason.
(09:55):
Discipline is at the root of all progress.
It's the reason why anything gets done and the reason why all things continue on.
Now that I mention it, I need to reread that book.
It's so good.
One thing that has helped me stay disciplined is making declarations to myself.
(10:19):
When you make a declaration to yourself, you make a promise.
You are declaring something that you want and it's really hard to go against that.
Your internal self won't allow it without causing a negative emotion.
It honestly feels terrible but it does work in your favor when it comes to discipline.
(10:41):
To become more disciplined in something, we have to move forward.
We have to take steps.
That is the only way.
Take one action and then another one and then another one and it just keeps going and keep
going no matter what is going on.
Sometimes you might have to get a little aggressive with yourself.
(11:05):
Not in a hurtful way of course but with tough love because discipline is relentless.
I personally think women can do this a little bit more.
Men tend to be brought up with some level of tough love but when it comes to us, discipline
is not necessarily rough.
(11:27):
You might be encouraged but not nearly as tough but in my experience that doesn't really
cut it when times get rough or when you're not feeling as upbeat.
But it's our job to find that drive within ourselves to push through.
That is discipline.
(11:47):
The quote for today is, small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to
great achievements gained slowly over time.
As always, thank you so much for listening and for spending this time with me.
I am so grateful for you and I hope to see you here next week.
