You should have seen him fromwhen he first came here until
now.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
We put him out there
with Henry and he's not nervous
no, he's not.
You bring him in here and dothis and he goes to pieces.
He's sticking back out therewith Henry.
He's fine again.
He's kind of like Henry.
He wants to be like Henry.
That's probably a better term.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Have you had a good
week this week, chris?
I have had a good week.
What's the most things, what'sthe best thing that happened
this week?
Speaker 3 (03:24):

all you guys and enjoying what
we're doing Was the food good.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Oh, it was good.
Guys, we're going to settledown here and talk serious now.
I'm just rambling on.
But, chris, you're fromGastonia, north Carolina, by way
of West Virginia.
That's correct.
And Chris, was he born inGastonia?
He was born in Gastonia, so hedon't know no different.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
No, no well, I mean
he's been to West Virginia, you
know, seeing our family.
You know, all our family isstill in West Virginia.
So I mean he's been up severaltimes, but he's a true North
Carolinian.
He was born there and that'swhere he's being raised.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
And plays baseball.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Loves baseball, plays
baseball, but I actually think
he probably loves this a littlemore.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
He's doing so good,
we're going to get into that.
We're going to get into him andhow he's doing.
But your background like whatdo you do?
Tell the folks what you do andwhat's all about that Well I'm
in law enforcement.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
I graduated Basic Law
Enforcement Academy in North
Carolina in December of 99.
I worked for a couple cityagencies before I went to the
sheriff's office and I've beenthere just under 17 years.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
With Gastonia, gaston
County.
Gaston County.
Yeah, that's correct.
So you're a sheriff, that'scorrect, but now you're in the
courtroom, that's correct, you're off the road now.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Off the road.
I'll be 50 in August, so myroad days, yeah, they're done.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
And Chris, you're in
what grade Eighth going?
Speaker 4 (04:57):
into ninth.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
You'll be in ninth
next year.
You're going into high schoolfirst year, mm-hmm.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Gast, you're going
into high school first year,
mm-hmm.
Gastonia, north Carolina.
Yes, all right, not lookingforward to it, he's made that
known.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
You don't look
forward to going no, why they're
scary.
Are you going to play baseballnext year?
I'm going to try out for it.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
If you make it or not
.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
If I make it, I'm
Well.
If you don't make it, you gotsomething to fall back on.
I do, too, drive horses, chris.
How did this horse thing comealong?
Did it just kind of happen, oryou tell the story?
I don't remember how ithappened.
Here's what I remember.
Okay, we was having a barbecue, yes, and I got an email from
(05:40):
some kind of Chris Holly.
Well, you got an email fromK9Cop282.
K9cop.
That's right Asking if you allwould be welcome to come.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
That's correct
because it said customer
appreciation and I thought, well, we've not been customers, but
I had taken him and my11-year-old.
Well, now 12, birthday on the2nd and he just had a birthday,
william.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
William, that's right
.
Shout out to William.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yep, he just had a
birthday, but I had taken him
and William to the AmericanBrabant Horse Association fall
rendezvous in 22, I think.
Well, this one here fell inlove with a hook line and sinker
, but it was nowhere near thehands-on that he got here with
you guys, but I could tell heloved it.
(06:27):
He really did, he loved it.
So that's when I reached out toyou about the first annual
haste barbecue and customerappreciation.
I was kind of finding out, youknow, is that something that we
can come to and attend, or is itjust for your past customers?
Graciously, you said no, comeon, it's for your past customers
.
Graciously you said no, come on, it's for everyone.
We'd love to have you.
(06:47):
So I brought him up here and Icould tell the first time that
Henry put a set of team lines inhis hand, he was hooked.
I remember the first time itwas a pair of gray mares
perching mares out in the fieldback there.
He put a set of team lines inhis hand and I saw a different
(07:10):
kid.
I really did, and it meant theworld to us that Henry took the
time to go with him and teachhim and then let him take a shot
on his own and he's been hookedever since.
It's amazing how horses canbring people together.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Oh, it's unbelievable
.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
They really do.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
What about your buddy
in West Virginia that come with
you?
That was Aaron Dodd.
Yes, from Clarksburg, WestVirginia, Shout out to Aaron.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Aaron.
Hopefully he's coming this year.
He is.
He's already told me he'sdefinitely going to come Good,
so he'll be here Good.
I had never been around drafthorses In West Virginia.
I was around a lot of Tennesseewalking horses growing up His
age, but I had never hadanything to do with draft horses
.
I had never fooled with drafthorses at all until I came up
(07:57):
here with you guys.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
What made you want to
go to the Brabant thing?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Just being his
grandmother, my wife's mom.
She had a Belgian quarter horsecross.
Okay, she had some trainingvery little.
But every time we went up there, this one here, he was in there
with it.
He was Carson's age size buthe'd shoot right in there and
(08:24):
just wanted to be around it.
So when the Brabant thing comeup, I mean he was Carson's age
size but he'd shoot right inthere and just wanted to be
around it.
So when the Vermont thing comeup, I thought why?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
not let's go see,
take it.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
And I could just see
it in his eyes.
He loved it, but it wasn't nearas hands-on as what it was here
.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Well, you come to the
barbecue with us.
Had a great time, had a blastFour days.
Four days, yep.
And then we kept contact.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
We did.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
And then we had a
clinic.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Well, hold on In
March.
We came back in December, rightafter Christmas remember the
26th, 27th and 28th.
I don't remember that we werehere for three more days.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Was y'all really?
We were here for three moredays, was y'all really?
Speaker 3 (09:03):
We were, because I
had reached out to you guys and
asked Okay, yeah, yeah.
And you said, yeah, you know, everybody's family should be
gone by then.
Come on.
Okay, I remember now.
So we came for three more days,he got more training with Henry
, and now it's Steve and I hearit weekly when are we going back
to Kentucky?
(09:23):
When are we going back toKentucky?
When we're going back toKentucky, let's go to Kentucky
this weekend.
It doesn't stop.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
The clinic came up,
though, in March.
Yes, and we do clinics, guys.
I don't know if you all may beaware or you may not be.
We train people to drive horses.
We train horses some, but wetrain people more.
And you know, it's not thepeople's fault.
A lot of people just don't know.
Like Chris, he'd never done it.
We want to give people theopportunity to learn the correct
(09:50):
way, and that's what we do.
But I had a clinic in March andI wanted to have a young guy or
a girl, just a teenager.
I called it a youth person atthe clinic, A youth apprentice.
A youth apprentice, that's theword I used.
They come for free.
The clinics, you know, theycost $3,000, $4,000 a person to
attend all week, but we let ayouth come for free, and I
(10:13):
picked Chris because he was.
You know, he'd been coming, hewants to learn.
I thought nothing would bebetter for him than to come,
stay with us a week and just digin and really get full hands on
with us.
So he was our youth apprenticeand of course he's a youth.
So I let his dad come with himfor free too.
Yep, and his dad come, and youknow, was here with him, and how
(10:35):
was your experience at theclinic, Chris?
Speaker 4 (10:39):
It was a good time.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
I enjoyed what I've
learned and seeing everybody
talking, getting to know theirstory, where they've come from.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
You've met a lot of
different people.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
I have.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Did you find people
familiar with the same way you
are coming in here Like peoplethat didn't know, like you
didn't know, but you learned wemet a couple like that.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah, what was her
name?
Male?
No, she, you learned.
We met a couple like that.
Yeah, yeah, what was her name?
Male?
No, she had horses.
Now, danielle, christine'sdaughter yes, she really didn't
have anything to do with whather mom did, but she didn't.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Yeah, that's right.
You've come a long way.
That's the main thing, and Ican tell a major difference this
week.
Can you give him back the mic?
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Yeah, he has come a
long way, he really has.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
He coming here this
week and he was ready.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
He was raring to go
that first day we were here, he
was ready to matter of fact, wehooked up a Percheron team you
did and we took off with him.
He was ready to go that firstday we were here he was ready to
matter of fact, we hooked up aPercheron team you did and we
took off with him.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
He was ready to go
and you all been driving some by
yourself.
We have.
We drove a lot here Like we'renot going with you.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
You all are going.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah, we went on our
own.
We took a Percheron team outBelgian team and then yesterday
we took a team of halflingersfor a pretty good long ride.
Excellent, excellent team, andthey are for sale.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
They are indeed.
They are still here.
So that was a good team.
They are a good team, they'revery good.
One thing that sticks in mymind is was it December when we
brought those mules back andy'all was here?
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yes, you and Henry
went, or you went and picked up
that team of gray mules.
Yeah, and I talked to my wifein my better half.
She's the better part of me.
Thank you, honey, for lettingus come like you do.
Right after Christmas we cameup here and you went and picked
that team of mules up and youwere tired, you were sleeping,
(12:47):
you passed out on us.
And Henry was tired as well.
But he said, here, hook them up, take them, you all, take them
for a drive.
And we were gone.
What, chris?
Three hours on that team?
I mean it was a long time andthey were great, but he wanted
to do it.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
He was ready to do it
.
What stuck out to me was goingdown the hill down here.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Well, now, we got a
little crossed up.
I know Henry's directions, youknow him, he talks a little fast
and you know, go down here andturn right and then go over
there and make a left.
We got down to the bottom ofthe hill and I said, chris,
which way did Henry say go?
I don't remember.
I said, well, just turn up thehill.
We got up the top of that hill.
(13:29):
Stephen didn't have a cluewhere we were at.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
What stuck out to me
was Halen.
Young Hill down here is like a13% grade.
It's huge.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Straight up and he
drove them down that hill by
himself.
I was sitting in the back.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
The video you sent me
.
Yes, it's a video on him andthat takes a lot of brave.
You know you've got to be brave.
It takes some nerve, trust, butthat shows me that a kid has
learned a lot in a few times.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
And he.
But that shows me that a kidhas learned a lot in a few times
.
And he's coming right on.
He's like a sponge when, whenhenry starts talking, he's a
sponge he wants to know he lovesit.
You know, henry talks, hismouth closes and his ears open
what do you think about plowingat the clinic?
Speaker 2 (14:09):
that's the first time
you plowed.
It was fun getting the plow.
My first time I did it I wasnervous trying to fall off the
plow.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Bouncing all over the
place.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
You guys can go back
and watch this stuff.
A lot of what we're talkingabout is on YouTube and I can
put the links in the descriptionof the podcast here on Apple
and whatever.
But if you go to our YouTubechannel and type in our Barbecue
, customer Appreciation or ourclinics, there's full-length
videos on there and you'll seehim his first time plowing.
I've pretty much got him onvideo every time he's here,
(14:45):
pretty much.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
You have.
He also drove a team.
We came in December, you made avideo with him, with a team of
Belgians, and as soon as thevideo went up, that team is now
in California to miss.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Jerica or Jerica
Jerusha, jerusha, that's right.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Jerusha's horse rides
yes, california, she's got that
team.
She does.
He made a video and she cameand bought them, and that's the
first time he had ever seen thatteam.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
One of them was a
stud, one of them was a mare
that's right, and when they lefthere they were a gelding.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
He was ading.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Let's talk about that
a little bit.
Chris, did you?
Guys?
You may not, you may know youmay not, but we castrate our own
horses.
If we got a gelding here or astud colt here that needs to cut
, we're not going to call a vet,henry, doesn't he's?
He's good as any vet in thecounty or country.
(15:40):
I mean, he can do it just aswell as them.
So we cut that horse when Chriswas here and little Chris got
to experience that.
What was your thoughts of that, chris?
It was a crime scene.
You didn't like it.
No, did you help or just watch?
Uh-uh, you didn't like it.
No, did you help or just watch?
Uh-uh, you ain't helping.
(16:00):
I'm not helping that.
What was I Sleep?
I sleep out here in the truck, yes, well, you all done that.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I wish I'd have been
here to video it for you two.
You should have seen it.
Stephen John Mark got the firstone cut and he spun that
scalpel around and went to handit to Chris and Chris's eyes
were as big as 50-cent pieces,he said.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
I can't do that.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Would you watch it
again and try to help again?
No, you wouldn't.
I wouldn't do that to a poorhorse.
That's not your cup of tea.
No, I'll pay someone to do it.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Forget about it.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Maybe that's not your
cup of tea.
No, I'll pay someone to do it.
Forget about it.
Maybe you'll come around sayingyou'll start doing it with
Henry, maybe.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
Maybe I think you
will.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
This week, though,
has been a different booger.
He's just been pretty much.
This week's been a good week.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
We have had a blast.
It's just more seat time forhim.
Yeah, it's just More trainingtime for him.
Yeah, it's just More trainingtime for him.
To us, when we come up here,it's like we're coming up to
visit family.
That's exactly what this feelslike.
Well, that's the way it shouldfeel.
That's the way we want it tofeel.
Well, you've done a good job ofmaking it feel that way.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
We want all of our
customers and all of our.
You know, if you're just ayoutube subscriber and you,
you've never bought nothing fromus.
You're still part of us.
If you listen to this podcastand you've never bought nothing
from us, you're still part ofour big circle.
You don't have to buy a team orbuy harness, buy wagons, buy
anything to be a member of ourcommunity.
(17:35):
We welcome everybody and thesetwo are a prime example and you
have done an outstanding job.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Your families, the
Martins, the whole community, I
mean we are truly grateful forthe way you guys take us in and
let us be a part of yourcommunity while we're here.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
You're kind of
learning a little more than just
us while you're here too.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
I have, we have, both
of us, we have.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
You're learning where
to go, yep, and where stuff is.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
I tell you when I
first come up here and you all
would tell us to run down toSunny Valley, run to the store
and get this.
Well, how do I get there?
I mean, it was, it was a maze.
That's exactly right.
I was trying to find my waythrough a maze.
Now Stephen can say, hey, rundown to Goldenrod Feed Store and
pick this up for me.
I know exactly where it's at.
(18:25):
I know where to go, you knowwhere Show Walters is.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
Oh, do I know where
Show Walters is.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
I've got a big list
to hit at Show Walters, before I
go back to North Carolina.
Are you taking more home?
Well, I'm taking a whole bunchmore home.
You better go tomorrow.
Some fellas I work with haveput in an order.
Oh Lord.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
So we're coming to
see you.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Show Walters, I've
got to go buy brats.
Oh, brats breakfast sausage,beef jerky.
He wants beef jerky.
Their jerky's good, I know itis.
James Ray bought a pack of beefjerky the day before yesterday.
It didn't last 30 minutes outhere.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
And we got another
guy coming in too here in a
minute.
That's here with us this week,mr Andrew.
He'll be episode 17, so staytuned, he'll be the next one.
But super good guy that's hungout with us all week.
Another member of the community.
Yep, it's like we're buildingsuch a good.
I don't know.
(19:23):
We're just building a solidfamily here.
I don't know, it's justhappening and I didn't plan on
it happening this way.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
You made a statement
back in October with something
like you get a lot oflike-minded people together,
great things happen.
Truer words have never beenspoken.
Yeah, we've had some good times.
We have met some wonderfulpeople and just bonded with
(19:50):
draft horses and mules.
Those animals bring peopletogether like nothing.
It's crazy how it works.
It really is, and this yearthere's going to be people here
that you know from last year YepPlus, I think, isn't this
year's barbecue supposed to bebigger than last year's.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
It's going to be
pretty big.
I don't know how many it'sgoing to show.
You know how it is.
Yep, but you know you gotfriends coming, like Leonard

from Cleveland, from Cleveland,utah.
They bought an excellentpurchasing team.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
That's a good thing,
and he sent me a couple videos.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Did you see what he
just bought this past week?
No, I got the video Michellesent to me.
He got a plow, a disc, a mowingmachine, a whole truckload.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Well, he sent me
videos of him taking that team
in the gray wagon that he gotfrom you and.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Henry and he's
picking his kids up at school
with that team.
And then they invited him tocome back to take the whole
school for rides and he had todo it by grades.
He did the first and secondgrade one day, the third and
fourth grade the next day.
I tell you, you all sold him afirst-class, top-notch team.
The people we got here.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
He goes over and sees
his sweetheart.
Yes, he does.
