How are you?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
How are you guys
doing?
Thank you, Tom, for doing this.
Hey, we're doing well.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
man, I'm excited to
sit down.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I haven't seen you in
a while man life's been good,
we're a little chilly.
Look across from us.
We've got the veteran Mr CraigDrucker.
We're going to get him on.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
We're going to get
him on.
We're watching a big screen ofall of the teams, from all the
way back to 1970-something.
Right, I got Coach Hall on myleft.
Did we have the original team?
Speaker 3 (03:12):
I think we do, I
think we saw it.
It was a little wrinkled, butwe saw that.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
I like it.
I like it.
Okay, before we welcomeeveryone else on, we need to get
a little bit of lay of the landfrom you guys.
Basketball at South River.
The boys suffered their firstloss of the season this past
week at Meade.
It happens.
North County, no, north County,I'm sorry, not Meade, north
County, north County, butregardless, we sit at 13-1.
(03:36):
Right Coach, yep 13-1.
All right, how are?
Speaker 3 (03:41):
we feeling Good.
I mean, it's never easy to lose, but I think we learned a lot
on Wednesday night about us andI'm excited to see how we
respond tonight.
And just vibing the locker roomand practice yesterday, I mean
our guys are ready to go.
You know, Wednesday night wastough Sat down early, came back
(04:05):
tied.
It had a chance to win it latebefore.
It just didn't make plays.
But you know our guys are goingto respond.
We'll learn from that and pickup the pieces We've been moving,
starting in about an hour.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Starting in about an
hour.
What are we expecting tonight?
How many people are going to behere?
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I'm excited it should
be a great crowd we have a show
tonight.
I think our student body isgoing to show up tonight.
They had a student faculty gameduring the day here.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Who won?
The student or the faculty?
I heard.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
The students won
which usually doesn't happen in
those days I'm wondering whathappened.
But really it's taken care ofin advance so the faculty can
get a win.
But I heard the students wontoday and I think we'll have a
great turnout tonight.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
I like it.
How many people?
How many people signed up?
Speaker 3 (04:56):
For I mean including
families and friends.
We're respecting 60, 70 people,75 people.
That's a lot of people.
Yeah, I think we had close to30, 35 alumni set up.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
What do you think
this means?
You're here, you're building aprogram.
I think having all the alumnicome back is a great idea.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
It's awesome, our
guys, our current guys, they
have such respect for the groupsthat over the past 4, five, six
, eight years because they'vebeen in the stand watching it
and I think a lot of theconversation we have is it's
there as much of an impact thelast seven, eight, nine years
(05:37):
the team's had.
The foundation was really builtway before that, you know, in
the program and in the schooland it's important for our guys
to see that.
You know, south River HighSchool, the South River
community and the South Riverbasketball still mean a lot to a
lot of people who were here waydown the road.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Andy, you know all
these kids I have you on because
you are the, you're kind of thespokesman for the program.
You know everybody who walks inhere, and so what?
Who are you looking forward tostopping by?
Speaker 2 (06:10):
well, the gentleman
has just walked in, jim danny
baldwin, um.
He is probably six, seven yearsolder than me and I was his
neighbor, so all throughelementary school I had the
pleasure of learning how to playtwo-hand touch football, how to
do all that stuff, throughDanny Baldwin.
He was one of the originals.
Speaker 8 (06:32):
The originals.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, so he just
walked in the gym.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
All right, so we'll
get him on.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
We got him my cousin
Ed Jones.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
He just walked in.
Not too tall, Too tall Ed, tootall Jones I.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Two tall.
So if I just make it I wasn'tsure, yeah, it was last minute,
and I think with this it getscontagious.
You know he's got 25 alumni andthey bring their spouse and all
, but then you've got some whoheard about it and just show up.
Just show up.
Yeah, they're starting to showup now I like it.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
We're going to have a
full house here.
I don't want to keep you toolong because I know you got to
get ready.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
You got to get ready.
But let me ask you this we'regoing to switch subjects.
The girls team we're going tohave.
We're going to have they'replaying right now.
We're going to get coach Zivic.
When he comes on, we'll have a,we'll have a post game with him
.
But I need to say this becauseyou and the JV girls team so I
got to give a lot of credit toyou.
I know they have other coachesand the other coaches are doing
(07:28):
a great job, but you've had agroup of these girls for a long
time now and they're playingpretty well.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
They are, they are.
They're fun to watch.
They're out there having fun.
But I tell you what thoseSavannah and Chance do a great
job, they do a tremendous job.
Not only do they teach the game, girls compete hard and more
importantly than all that, orequally as important, because it
is high level and you want tolearn and beat but they have a
(07:53):
blast playing.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
They're a good team.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Yeah, I mean my
daughter comes home and says hey
, you were pretty good.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Are they much better?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I got a new saver.
That's what my daughter tellsme.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Oh, now wait a minute
here, because I feel like I'm a
little part of that too.
Exactly.
I know I don't like that she'sreplacing both of us with them.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
It hurt but I told
you to get in, so you get in.
But yeah, they're rolling and Iknow our senior class, the
varsity level is pretty heavy.
Quite few seniors who have madea tremendous impact, but
there's a lot of good talentcoming up A lot of good talent
coming up yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
All right, I'm going
to let you go on this one.
What do we expect tonight?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I think our guys are
going to come out and fight.
Yeah, I think they're going tocome out and compete.
We've kind of gotten in thehabit of being complacent,
especially early in the gamesover the past few weeks and it's
been a point of emphasis, butit's still actually until the
snake actually bites you.
It's time to understand what itreally feels like, and
(08:57):
Wednesday night we got a slowstart and came all the way back
again, but we just weren't ableto finish it off and I think the
feeling in the locker room, yeah, I think it was kind of a
reality check for our guys.
I mean, you know it's never funlosing, but it's certainly
(09:18):
something to be learned from andI'm excited to see him come out
tonight.
I think you're going to see ateam with a lot of A different
focus and maybe it's a silverlining tonight I think you're
going to see a team with a lotof A different focus yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
And maybe it's a
silver lining.
Silver lining, if you've got tolose one, lose it now, no doubt
, before we get on.
All right, coach, you need toget ready.
I feel like you need to getprepared.
You need to get something toeat.
I already ate, don't worryabout that Get as many people on
tonight as we can, yep, andthen we're all going to come out
and watch a big victory.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Love it.
Tom Banks is doing this.
All right, this is good stuff.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Thank you, Coach.
That's Coach Darren Hall.
I got Andy Long on for the restof the evening.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Let's go, baby, let's
go.
All right, how have you been?
I've been great man.
I wanted to pledge to keep hislead.
That's pretty good to hear thisguy in the back there, yeah,
but anyway, to watch our guys.
(10:12):
Like Coach said, the lastcouple games they'll be coming
out sort of like, I'd say, sitting on a recliner and it's
been working for us.
We've been winning, but we gavethem a little too much.
And I tell you, sitting backwatching them fight that second
hand, if they play all fullquarters like that, we can't be
stopped.
Speaker 8 (10:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
It was beautiful to
see.
Speaker 8 (10:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yeah, I like it.
I think we were down by 21.
I think you might have beendown by 25 at one point 25, and
we came back to tie it and wecame back to tie it, yeah, and
then just ran out of steam.
That's a lot to come back from.
We gave them a lot up front, but that's all right.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
But no, tonight's a
great thing, man, I'll tell you.
Got a lot of phone calls today, the alumni, the alumni, and
when I just came back here tojoin you, they're coming in now.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Yeah, so we're going
to get a bunch of them on Yep.
They're coming in now.
Yeah, so we're going to get abunch of them on Yep.
Excellent, you see anybody hereyou want to jump on right now.
How about we get the JV coachover there?
Should we get some perspective?
So we're going to talk to you,not as an alumni, although you
are an alumni.
Speaker 8 (11:15):
Yes, sir, yes sir,
2016.
2016.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
2016,.
Speaker 8 (11:20):
But you're also our
Braden Carew.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Yeah, we're on.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Let's go All right.
So you've got to give us.
We've talked about the varsityteam.
We've talked about the girlsteam because I have to.
You know, our JV girls teamstill undefeated.
Studs, studs.
Speaker 8 (11:36):
Two of the best
coaches in the county as well.
They are.
They are.
Tell us about your team.
So my team.
You know we're real young.
We only have five sophomores, only three returning sophomores.
One actually got hurt TylerSuggs Shout out, tyler Suggs.
But I'm real young.
I have a lot of freshmen, but Ihave a lot of good freshman
talent Devin Woodyard, dylanDaniels two very promising young
(11:56):
talents.
Devin Woodyard's also a varsityfootball player, so very good
athlete.
I also have Cam Hout.
Cam, who, tal, is a sophomore.
He's kind of like our, he's thedad of our team.
Yeah, keeps everybody together.
He keeps everybody going.
He locks us in in practice.
Um, we have a six foot eightsophomore.
Uh, nicholas yotter he's great.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
I saw that big kid
he's very big.
Speaker 8 (12:15):
Uh, last year he got
sick, um, he lost a lot of
weight, so he's kind of gainingthe back and getting his
basketball back you can't teachsix, eight, though can't teach
it.
But great rim protectors gotgreat hands, got great feet, so
he's going to be a problem here.
Junior and senior year forvarsity, I'm sure.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
So, coach, how do you
do it?
I mean, it's hard to coach JV.
Speaker 8 (12:33):
It's very hard.
They take your best players.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
They bring them up to
the varsity Four of them.
But I mean, that's great, you've got to keep working with
these kids.
And then you sit on the benchfor the varsity game.
You're input in there.
Speaker 6 (12:45):
And it's going to be.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
I mean, you're going
to know these kids as they move
their way up.
No doubt they're going toremember you as the coach.
Speaker 8 (12:50):
Yep, I like to think
about it as I'm putting my
fabric with the varsity as well.
Our overall, our captain isDarren Hall and he's the is
going to make everybody veryelite, but I like to think I
have a little bit of the process.
I've coached jonah, I'vecoached jamie, yeah, I've
coached jake, um, I've coachedhank, I've coached a couple of
the young guys that are nowmaking varsity.
(13:11):
So I take it as a positive onme when my young guys that are
sophomores make varsity, becauseit's like I got them for a year
, polished them up a little bit,and then darren can steal them
from me after that and we can gowin games on the varsity level
there you go.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Yeah, there you go.
So what's the outlook?
Where do you sit right now?
Speaker 8 (13:27):
you're eight and
we're like uh, eight and seven,
seven and seven something likethat about 500 yeah we've had
some inconsistency but you knowwe win some games.
we're a three-point shootingteam so sometimes you know your
ninth and tenth graders 14, 15year olds they sometimes come
out and we hit a lot of threesand sometimes we come, come out,
we don't hit too many.
We have one guy that's superconsistent, merrick Norton.
He stays between 10 and 15points every game.
(13:49):
He's going to come out, he'sgoing to shoot with confidence.
He's going to play very hard.
That's something you can'tteach as well.
We've got a lot of promise andwe're just a little inconsistent
, but we'll get there.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
You'll?
And what are your thoughts onthe varsity team?
We're going to bounce backtonight.
Speaker 8 (14:02):
We're going to bounce
back tonight.
I've made some bold statementsbefore and this, in my opinion,
is possibly the best South Rivervarsity basketball team we
could ever see, until maybe nextyear when our three juniors
become seniors.
I've seen a lot of goodbasketball.
I've been around Edgewaterforever and I've been coming
here since I was five.
I've seen a lot of girl teams.
I've been coming here since Iwas five.
(14:23):
I've seen a lot of girl teams.
I've seen Bree Bolden play.
I've seen Jahair Jones play.
I've seen all these differentkind of guys play.
My junior year team won about15, 16 games.
These teams would smoke everyteam I've seen.
You're proclaiming right now oneof the best, if not the best,
South River team that you'veseen ever In my 26 years, coming
around for 21 years, this is byfar, in a way, the best boys
(14:49):
basketball team I have ever seen.
How do you react to that?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
you know, as an
alumni player yeah I agree with
him, but I gotta tell you, um,it's the coaching as well.
I mean these guys.
I had the pleasure of watchingb and he shares the coaching
responsibility with Kobe.
Yeah, and both of those guys Iwatch play.
This guy can shoot lights outthe way they do the kids, the
(15:13):
way the kids respond to them.
That's what it's all about.
Wow, you guys are doing a greatjob.
And if you look over here toour right, him and Kobe's family
is responsible for that.
Spread over there.
The mom handmade the mac andcheese and Kobe works at Mission
Barbecue and he was able topull some strings.
Speaker 8 (15:36):
So that's what I like
about this the guys are all in,
yeah, and I want to say onemore thing.
I know that Cash and Trey andBlake and all of them are going
to listen to this and they'regoing to say they're going to
text me.
Those are my guys.
I've known them for a long time.
I grew up with the Herndonsisters that are now Leonard and
Brown, but I grew up with them, grew up with the family.
Trey Cash, blake I love youguys.
Your senior year team was great, but this team's got some
(15:57):
talent.
They got a lot of Jamie Finsmaybe the greatest shooter I've
ever seen, and Jonah Hall thepoise of a 16, 17-year-old kid
on the court is incredible.
And they're all juniors andthey're all juniors.
And then shout out my guy, jakeEvans as well.
He holds it down at the point.
He has his ups and downs buthe's the heart and soul of the
team and our rim protector.
(16:17):
At 6'2", being Alec, I mean heplays his heart out as well.
Yeah, I like it.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
I'll tell you.
Another cool thing is all thosenames that he just mentioned.
The guy that's never been putin the game.
He's the BG&E of the team Everyday he's the first one there.
He keeps it going.
So from A to Z on both of theseboys' teams they're tapped in.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
I like it.
They're tapped in.
I like it.
We're going to have a fun restof the season, no doubt.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
No doubt let's bring
home a ring to South River Boys
basketball.
Wouldn't that be great?
Let's go a county championship,a regional championship and
then ultimately let's get DarrenHall that ring and let's get
those three juniors that ring.
That would be something, nodoubt.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
All right the girls
as well.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Yeah, let's get it.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
Yes, sir, All right I
got some special guests here.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
now I got the coaches
of our I think, the number one
cheer team in all of Maryland.
Please introduce yourselves.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Hello, I'm Coach
Carly, coach Beverly.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Coach Beverly, How's
it going All right?
So we were supposed to havecounties.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
This past week but
didn't happen.
Yeah, got delayed.
Yeah, when are we set to do itnow?
Speaker 11 (17:26):
Monday Monday At
Chesapeake High School.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
At Chesapeake High
School, yep.
What are we thinking?
Speaker 7 (17:33):
The girls are looking
good.
They're really trying.
We had a great full out thislast practice and we have our
warm-up comp at Spaldingtomorrow and then back in on
Monday for counties.
Now.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
Spalding on tomorrow
and then back in on Monday for
counties.
Now wait a minute.
Would you have had the Spaldingthing if the county thing was
happening this week?
You would have done it anywayjust to prep for the next thing,
for regionals.
Knock on wood.
All right, knock on wood, butnow it's good, because now you
get like a whole other thing todo before we go to counties.
Speaker 7 (17:58):
Yeah, because the Ken
Island Invitational got
canceled.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
So we only ended up
with our competition.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
That was it yeah,
before counties I enjoyed the
competition.
It's always a great time, it is.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
I've only been to
your competition, but I tend to
think your competition is betterthan all the other competitions
.
Is that true?
Speaker 11 (18:16):
I mean, I don't
think we're better.
We run a very well comp.
We're very organized.
No, I think it's very organized, maybe a little OCD.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
I think it's
extremely well organized.
Anybody who's never come out toone of these has to.
Yes, because if nothing, elseyou sit there and you listen to
really loud music.
Speaker 7 (18:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
And I kind of enjoy
that.
Speaker 7 (18:35):
There's a lot of
talent and a lot of great teams
that come and it's good to seesome of the Inter-Royal County
poor counties.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Yeah, and I do have
to apologize to Severn Run, who
we play basketball to, butthat's not my fault.
This is their first year.
Speaker 11 (18:50):
I kept saying
Severna Run, but it's Severn Run
.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
I don't usually make
mistakes like that, but they
threw me off.
And then the Wolves.
They're bright orange.
Speaker 11 (18:57):
Well, they just are
standing out.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
They are standing out
.
Speaker 11 (19:01):
They are.
It's very exciting for them.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
All right, they are
standing out, they are.
It's very exciting for them.
All right, so tell me aboutthis year's squad.
Speaker 11 (19:07):
I mean we're
crushing it.
I mean we're doing as best wepossibly can.
I mean winter season's winterseason what?
Speaker 8 (19:15):
does that mean?
Speaker 11 (19:18):
So you deal with a
lot of illnesses throughout the
schools and missed practices andnot full team practices, which
we know is difficult in cheerworld.
Yes, you have four basketballteams, you have wrestling, so
getting into the main gym topractice is very tough to get
into, so we squeeze any time wecan.
So winter is always harder, butwe get through it and we'll be
(19:40):
fine.
Speaker 7 (19:41):
You're going to be
fine.
Yeah, we're soaking up the nextlike three weeks, especially
with our seniors.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
Yeah, this is it.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
For four years, so
it's yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
This is it right.
You're done after this season.
You don't do like a thirdseason in a row.
No, we don't.
Speaker 11 (19:52):
No, I mean and
they're exhausted.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (19:55):
Their bodies are
just tired.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
I mean tonight here
for the big game.
This is going to be fun.
This is going to be a packedhouse tonight.
I think we're going to destroySevern Run, but that's just my
opinion I'm putting it out therebefore it actually happens.
Speaker 11 (20:10):
You manifest it, I'm
going to manifest it.
And we'll be back here at 7.15to get ready to go to the
Spalding AM.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
Good that's good,
that's what you need to be doing
.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Alright, tell people
about counties.
Can they still get tickets?
What times it start?
Speaker 11 (20:24):
Tickets are sold out
.
Sold out.
They've been sold out for days.
Yep, wow.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Sold out.
Speaker 11 (20:29):
At Chesapeake High.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
All right, and what
any do we want to talk about
where we think we could place.
Speaker 11 (20:35):
We're always hoping
for top three top five.
I mean it's Anne Arundel Countyso Shoot for number one.
Well, let's go for number one,I mean that would be great.
Yeah, but we also respect thetalent that's in Anne Arundel
County.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
All right.
And how about this?
Because I've learned this now.
What is your?
I don't know what the number iscalled, but the max that you
can get Are you allowed to talkabout that, 120.
Speaker 11 (20:54):
So 120.
Speaker 7 (20:55):
So do we have a
difficult thing.
We're doing Diffic closer tobeing maxed out, completely
under difficulty, and it comesdown to technique, all technique
.
I think the most exciting part, though, for us as a program is
our JB competing for the firsttime in over a year.
Those coaches have taken girlsthat have never cheered before a
(21:15):
day in their lives and theyactually look amazing and they
are ready, excited, for counties.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
They looked very good
at the South River showdown
yeah, they did.
Speaker 11 (21:25):
I think only one
girl has cheered before.
That's it, or one or two, butthat's it.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
That's kind of
amazing.
Those JV coaches better coachthem up because you get them
there.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
They're doing great
the team's doing great.
Speaker 11 (21:38):
The coaches are
doing great.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
It was a good start.
Speaker 11 (21:42):
Number one Shoot for
number one on.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
Monday for number one
Absolutely On Monday night.
Speaker 11 (21:46):
Yes, monday night.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
I love.
It All right, good luck.
Speaker 11 (21:49):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Boom, that's our
South River cheer team coaches.
Let's do it.
All right, andy.
All right, we got some morepeople at the table here.
Introduce us here.
All right, buddy, they're thelegends man.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
They're Mr and Mr
Woodland Beats.
So the gentleman to my right, tom.
I played ball with him when weused to play at the Edgewater
little what was it calledEdgewater down there across from
Adams London Town Public House.
He was the coach.
I think we were seven years old, so we got Tom Rose and Steve
(22:31):
Rose, aka Moose Moose.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Oh, I've heard about
you, Moose.
Oh, I've heard some stories.
Yes, I have, and I'll tell youthey ran the gamut really.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
I'm going to tell you
.
So, tom and I he lived on thesame street.
Up the road Mom made the bestone thing about his mom made the
best cheese toast ever.
That's what we ate cheese toast, before every game.
But I've had the pleasure ofplaying with Tom since
7-year-old.
And then he surpassed me, hewent and played college ball,
(23:05):
and Moose was my first coach andcoached all the way up until he
, when we grew up, he became thehigh school coach too.
So he coaches in baseball.
Oh okay, high school assistantin baseball.
Oh okay, high school assistant.
You got the legends here, wegot some legends here.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
All right.
So you got to tell us whatyou're up to right now.
Now you're a former coach.
Now you went on to coach atmany different places.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Yeah, several places.
All right tell us about this.
So I left here, then went andplayed for the community college
, left here, then went andplayed for the community college
, played basketball there fortwo years and transferred to
Goucher where I played for twoyears and after that I was
fortunate because my communitycollege coach was Mark Amatucci.
He went to Calvert Hall afterthat.
So I worked there for two years, then went back to Goucher, was
(23:50):
an assistant.
Then I was a head coach at OurLady Mount Carmel High School
for 13 years.
We had a lot of success there.
Then moved over to Goucher, wasthere for eight years, kind of
stepped away from that.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Now I'm a special
education math teacher at
Dundalk High.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
School up in
Baltimore.
What years did you coach atGoucher?
So let's see Grace 2015-16 upuntil two years ago.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Oh, so very recently.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
Yeah, yep.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Okay, so you're
familiar with Coach.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
Curley.
I am familiar with Coach Curley.
Yeah, we had some pretty goodgames up there.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
All right, Now I
played basketball with Coach
Curley back in the day.
And now he's a Juniata and I'llbe heading up there tomorrow
actually.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
Yeah, he's done a
nice job up there.
He's got a nice gig going.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
He's been there for
23 years now.
Yeah, something like that.
Yeah, alright.
And then you, sir Moose, yes, sir, what are you up to now?
Not just retired now and justenjoying it Watching TV?
Do you get out to many of thegames?
Nah, this is my first one.
First one, basketball.
Yeah, alright.
Now have you guys beenfollowing this team?
I've been following this team.
(25:01):
I've been following a littlebit.
I mean, they seem to be doingpretty well.
So, yeah, we're ranked in thearea and it's really good.
We just had a guy on he's thejv coach assistant right on the
varsity, who just made a, made abig statement.
He said this team is the bestteam he's ever seen at south
river.
Wow, that's a pretty bigstatement yeah, that is all
right, tell me about your teamswhen you were playing here.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
When I played here,
we weren't very good Okay so
we're not even in comparison.
We were competitive, you know, but we just didn't have all the
pieces that we needed.
Yeah, I mean, back thenAnnapolis was just a big power.
I mean they were winning statechampionships consistently.
So the county was talented, meade was very good, um, and you
(25:37):
know, we just they were just adifferent caliber.
I mean it was a lot better whenI went to community college and
played with some of those guysrealizing, you know, a lot more
fun, a lot we were playing withthem, I guess, yeah, yeah yeah
so yeah, but I mean, you knowandy sells himself short a
little bit.
He was a really good athletewhen we were growing up.
Um, you know, it's cool becausewe played everything together.
I mean, we played baseball, weplayed basketball, um, you know,
(26:01):
I used to.
He was a great pitcher.
I used to be the catcher forhim.
Um, you know basketball, wewere kind of twin towers.
We were in elementary schooland then he grew a little bit
and I didn't grow for a longtime and then finally I did grow
.
Um, but it was cool.
His mom was really involvedwith what we did.
And then you know, I call himSteve, but everybody knows him
as Moose.
He coached us to be.
He used to throw us all in thevan.
(26:21):
I remember that was one of thethings pick everybody up.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
You know he coached
us in everything, so we're
better people because of it yeah, I don't know how he coached
for so many years because notonly it was the light blue van
and a lot of us.
He would pick everybody up inthe van, We'd go play, but
before we'd play back then youhad a $50 steak and egg and
(26:44):
cheese biscuits.
He'd take us to lunch.
He was the guy and I'll neverforget.
My freshman year I got cuttrying out for basketball.
We didn't have AAU or do any ofthat.
I remember Tom seeing me inschool.
He's like, dude, come over.
And I walked up to McRodan.
It was snowing in November andwe would take these snowballs
(27:08):
and we would stand back and wewould try to hit his backboard.
And he's like if you could hita backboard with this snowball,
you could put the ball in thehoop.
And he was.
You don't know it and I neverhad a chance to tell him, but he
pushed me and I made it.
Remember we moved varsity, oursophomore year.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
That's fantastic.
So what's it mean for you guys?
I mean alumni night, what'sthat mean to come back?
I mean, this thing goes back alot of years.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Oh yeah, definitely
For me.
I think it's different than him.
I mean, he's got a long historyhere.
For me to come back and justsee it and see how different it
is, but also to walk the hallsand feel how nostalgic it is.
It's always cool, because whenyou're walking, the halls it's
(27:58):
probably not that much different.
It's not that much different, you know, but it's.
You know.
It's one of those things whenyou always go back to a place
you were, it doesn't seem as bigas it was when you were there.
Yeah, you know how gigantic, but I mean it's still.
It's cool.
You just memories come back toyou and you get to see people
that, um, you share memorieswith.
So that's always cool aboutthat, yeah, for sure.
But he's, you know, he's got along history here.
I mean it's, it's cool.
Mean people know him, you know,by Moose.
It's funny, you know, it's justamazing, it's good.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
So, Moose, tell us
about, I mean, what were some of
your favorite memories here, some of your best teams.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Well, I started
coaching baseball in 89.
Then I went to girls basketballin the year 81, or I mean 91 or
92.
I forget, or 81, or I mean 91or 92.
I forget, but I mean, and thenI quit or stopped, like in 2020.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Yeah, so you were
coaching up until 2020.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
So, you're not that
far from being removed.
Yeah, nah, I think I coachedbaseball until 21.
Yeah, I think it's fun.
I mean they're good Good kids,a lot of bad teams, but I mean
they were good Good kids, a lotof bad teams, but I mean mostly
good teams.
One time we went 0-20, and thennext year we were 15-5.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
That's coaching right
there.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Yeah, that's what I
said.
Yeah, but you know, we had goodpeople, had a good person in
front of me, coach Dunn.
I've heard a lot of storiesabout Coach Dunn.
Tim Poole was the coach ofbasketball for one time and a
couple other guys.
They had a good team whenDarren was, I think, a sophomore
(29:28):
, darren Hall the coach yeah, hewould have been a sophomore.
Yeah, I think he had a goodteam with Al Lee, who was just
an amazing person.
Yeah, an amazing basketballplayer and baseball player.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Yeah, we've heard a
lot about Coach Hall's team back
in the day.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
That's probably the
best I can remember.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
That's the best one
you remember.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
Yeah, there's some
that should have been better,
but just never gelled oranything.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
Yeah, all right.
Well, hey, we appreciate youguys being here.
Let's get a big win.
Let's go watch a big win.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Let's go watch it.
Go Waterland Beach, babyWaterland Beach.
Speaker 7 (30:02):
Appreciate you having
us All right.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Thank you, sir Yep.
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
All right, we are now
joined by the girls' varsity
coach, Coach Zivic coming rightoff the court right into here.
Post-game interview.
I don't even know the finalscore 62-22.
62-22?
Yes, All right, so we had arunning clock at the end.
I take it All right.
Who were the big scorers?
(30:26):
Give us a lowdown.
Speaker 12 (30:29):
Burke had 13.
Hawkins had 11.
Oval had 8.
Skyler had 8, West at 7, andthen we had a couple people at 4
, 2, and 1 sprinkled in there.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
All right.
So you've got to tell me herelet's talk about the early
season.
We haven't talked all season.
Speaker 12 (30:50):
No no we haven't.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
I've been waiting for
you.
Speaker 12 (30:52):
Hey, you know my
number.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
I feel like you've
been ducking me a little bit.
No no, no, we had some earlyseason stumbles, but you're back
up and running.
Speaker 12 (31:00):
Tell me about the
season so far, I wouldn't call
them stumbles.
They're learning experiences.
Okay, and we played really goodteams, yeah, and the thing
would I have liked to come outon top of all of them?
Yes.
Would I have liked to come outon top of at least one of them?
Yes, but that being said, weplayed them good teams, and we
(31:20):
represented South River.
There was no blowouts.
We were there.
I think the biggest loss wasseven.
Speaker 8 (31:27):
Dude, we were in
every game.
Speaker 12 (31:28):
Yeah, we were in
every game, yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
And so what can we
expect?
Moving forward here?
You expect moving forward here.
You're on a little bit of a runright now.
You're in the county, though,so a little different.
Speaker 12 (31:36):
Yes, it is a little
different.
We're doing what we're supposedto do.
We're a good team.
We're supposed to beat teamsbecause we're just better than
that.
There's no way around it, yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
We're at Alumni Night
.
We've got all the boys teamcoming in here.
Now what does Alumni Night meanfor you and for the program?
I mean you're growing somethinghere.
Speaker 12 (32:02):
It's awesome.
I still talk to some of myplayers like friends on Facebook
.
You know the book face always agood place and you know it's
awesome.
I've been here for a while.
I wasn't from here, but I feellike I am a Seahawk through and
through.
You know I didn't go up throughthe ranks but I've been here,
(32:22):
I've put a lot of time in andyou know I'm proud of what the
kids have come through here andthat's the biggest thing.
I mean these kids now aredoctors, some of them are
engineers, of them are work forthe uh, capital police.
You know they have new careers.
Some of our certain families, Imean it really is awesome to
(32:45):
see that kind of stuff.
I mean I had the pleasure tocoach a couple of them, their
kids, at a camp this summer, sojust things like that like
coming full circle.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Yeah, that is cool,
that is very cool.
Well, coach, we need to haveyou on again.
We need to have a full showwith all that goes through Coach
Jivic's head.
Speaker 6 (33:03):
You don't want that.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
As we continue on A
good win right here, who do you
got next?
Chesapeake, chesapeake.
That's going to be a good one, though, right or not?
Speaker 12 (33:12):
We're going to take
care of business, you're going
to take care of business.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
All right Coach.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
You know, I wanted to
say something to Zivic.
He doesn't know it, but when Ibecause when I went to school
here Zivic wasn't here.
Yeah, I come back nikeherndon's oldest daughter,
chance.
But and when I walked into thegym I was late and I'll it, it
was halftime, so it wasn't abuzzer beater, but it was a
(33:36):
halftime before they go in halfcourt shot and I watched the
express and on coach, I was likeman, I've never met him.
It's pretty cool.
Now she's the jb coach, coaching for the varsity coach,
so it's a pretty special thingit's a pretty funny.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
You remember that,
don't you?
Speaker 12 (33:51):
yeah, I mean I, you
know I'm lucky to have them
chance.
Savannah, you know they camethrough, they know what to
expect.
They're doing a great job withour JV one county right now the
only undefeated team.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 12 (34:05):
I love it too, the
county champions last year.
They're gonna try to defend itagain this year.
That's fantastic, I'm pumpedfor them yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
All right, Coach Okay
.
Speaker 12 (34:13):
Go get something to
eat.
Oh, I'm starving.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
We're going to get
you back on, okay, because we're
going to go for a stretch runhere.
I still feel special things onthis team.
Okay, I agree All right.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
All right, andy, who
we got now.
We got it.
We got it.
We got Mr Zandy Baldwin, tomBresnahan with us right now.
And I tell you, growing up atWollongong Beach, I remember
Moose said when I walked down tothe beach I had to pass his
house and his house, and everytime we did we wouldn't go by
him unless we give me thefootball.
So these are the guys I wastelling you to help make me who
(34:51):
I am.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
All right.
So you got it All right.
Guys, first you got to tell mewhat you're up to now and what
year did you graduate 83,.
Speaker 6 (34:57):
both of us 83.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
All right.
What are we up to now?
We both still live here.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
Oh yeah, I have four
daughters.
You go Got a bunch of grandkidsthat'll probably come here.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
So you are a South
River in and through.
Speaker 6 (35:11):
Yeah, Been here since
75.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Outstanding.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
I've had three to
graduate from here.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
All right.
Speaker 5 (35:17):
I live in Selby.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
All right, so I need
to know a little bit about your
teams.
How are your teams comingthrough here?
I'm seeing pictures all night.
I think I saw your team upthere.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
We were up in there.
Me and Danny grew up togetherin elementary and all the way
through, and what we did back inthe day was compete.
We competed against each other,Our friends.
We had a friend group of justballers and no matter what sport
we were doing, it could befootball on the street,
basketball, any playground.
(35:47):
Like Andy said, we'd walk bysomebody's house, just you know.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
Let's go, let's go
Pick up D.
Speaker 6 (35:54):
Yeah, and somebody
was getting bloody or hurt,
busted up.
But you know what, we got inthe same car and we were buddies
and that was it.
After the game, the practices,we were hung out together.
It was tight-knit.
We had a tight-knit knit andthat's what made us good.
Yeah, camaraderie we had withour sport.
He, he played the same sports Idid, except for I was a
(36:15):
baseball guy and he was alacrosse guy.
We both played football andbasketball, so three sports.
But uh, we, I was there for himin lacrosse and he was there
for us in baseball, that kind ofstuff was what.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
What got us going all
right, so tell me some of your
favorite memories.
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Well, I guess
basketball-wise would be first
team to beat Southern Boys at.
Southern.
They came down to beat ourbutts, but we went down there
and beat them.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
They were a good team
.
Speaker 1 (36:44):
Did they still have
that little tiny gym?
Speaker 6 (36:47):
I guess that gym's
done changed.
All of us stand in the room, only you stand behind the
baskets back then.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
And I think in 83, we
it was the 82 season, but yeah,
that was the 82 season but 83season.
We still hold the best recordfor the school at 18 and 5.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
Which might be broken
this year.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
So you were 18 and 5,
and that's the best record ever
.
Speaker 6 (37:09):
Uh-huh.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
Oh, that could be in
jeopardy this year what?
Are we sitting at right now?
Speaker 5 (37:13):
I think last year,
two years ago, what 18-6?
Or last year 18-6.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
We were talking on
the coattails.
Speaker 5 (37:21):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
And we were talking
about it, then too, Like you
know, it doesn't, we don't mindseeing it.
We like the talk with SouthRiver.
You read the paper You'regetting out there on social
media?
I want to hear it.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
I want to see it, so
it doesn't bother us, and maybe
you'll start listening to thepodcast now.
Speaker 6 (37:39):
Yeah, I've got to get
into that.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
Yes, you do so.
Wow, I didn't realize thatwe're chasing a record here
right now.
Now we had somebody on earlier.
I'm just going to keep sayingthis because he made a bold
statement and he said best teamever at South River is the guys
who are about to take the court, and they have a lot to prove
yet.
Speaker 6 (38:01):
But what do you think
of that statement?
Well, watching a couple games,I'm going to say they got a good
15 kids, 12 that can play.
Speaker 5 (38:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (38:08):
We kind of had that
too.
We had size, A couple of size.
The game was a little differentthen.
I can see we spread the floornow a lot more than we ever did.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
They're shooting
behind the point line Constantly
.
Speaker 6 (38:24):
We were more set up
in plays and running through the
post.
Sometimes he was our point, sowe ran through him too.
So, I was just a bench playerby a chance.
I'm just an off-the-benchhustle guy, you know.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
Well, the cool thing
is, if I could add, you know
you've got Coach Hall who'scoaching you, who did wonderful
things.
But when I came up, we playedat Edgewater Elementary we
played here.
These guys were thescorekeepers.
They flipped that quarterElementary.
We played here.
These guys were thescorekeepers.
They'd flip that card upAnytime I'd do something wrong.
Them guys would come over to meespecially.
(38:56):
I remember Danny going no, noman, you've got to turn around
and do this.
And then Tommy would get me inthe second half.
So collectively, these olderguys would help shape us.
So it's just a pyramid.
Now, these guys, they can't dothe hard because they got them,
they got them, they got me.
So they're almost bulletproofand they listen.
Well, but it all started righthere.
Speaker 6 (39:18):
Y'all the first team
79 was the first year we got
together.
Yeah, 79, 80, well, I wasn't onthe team.
Then I got cut my JV year andthen made varsity 10th grade.
So that's kind of weird, butyeah, it was the first year.
We were one of the first fullyears, full years.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
And still hold the
record for wins.
Speaker 6 (39:39):
Yeah, we had a good
group.
Like I said, it was tough and Ithink to go back to this group
here today, a lot of it has todo with good parenting, if these
kids are listening and doingthe right thing, good coach too.
Darren's a good guy.
I'm glad we got him.
I used to come up here andwatch him play.
When he was playing, I'd be inthe stands watching him yelling
and hooping and hollering.
(39:59):
I'm a yeller.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
So what do you think
about alumni?
I mean, I like this.
This is a fun thing.
I want to see more people outhere.
Speaker 6 (40:07):
Yeah, it would be
great to see more Once we I
think next year maybe we get itto where we get more time to set
it up.
Yeah, you know, because I justfound out this week.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
I've been saying,
maybe a Saturday, yeah, maybe.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Yeah, maybe a
Saturday afternoon game.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
Do something a little
bit before the game or after
the game, one or the other orboth.
Speaker 6 (40:29):
Yeah, it's a good
thing, no matter what.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (40:32):
It's great.
It's great to see so manypeople, and so many people care
about this community and arestill part of it and still have
kids that have all come rightthrough South River.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Yep, yeah, doing
different things, but we're
still here, you know, and hiswife, Danny's wife's, right over
there looking at the thing shecame through here Big softball
yeah and we tried to get her on,she wouldn't come over.
Well they're back in the year.
That's all right.
That's all right All rightfellas.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Thank you, I
appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
Appreciate.
You Enjoyed the game.
Danny was the athlete of theyear in 83.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
Athlete of the year
in 1983.
Speaker 6 (41:05):
That dude could do it
all.
If somebody I looked up to asan athlete, I prided myself on
trying to be the best ineverything Hard, it was him.
I followed him.
He was the man.
Speaker 5 (41:15):
I like it.
Speaker 6 (41:15):
I appreciate that,
john, you can play any sport.
Yeah, don't matter, doesn'tmatter.
It didn't matter then, it don'tmatter, now you can play
anything.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
I remember you know
like my dad would make my uh
bounce back goals out of conduitelectrical safe.
I'll never forget.
I walked by and danny wastaking his lacrosse ball off of
this tree a round tree and itkept coming back so yeah, how
hard that is so he figured itout that kind of way and I was
always inspired to you.
(41:52):
I appreciate that.
Good job, bud yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
All right let's get a
win.
Yes sir, and then I'm kind ofrooting for the record to be
broken.
Speaker 6 (42:02):
We'll win tonight.
We'll win tonight and I want tobeat the Smyrna Parks and the
Frog Nacks.
Speaker 1 (42:06):
Yeah, I do too.
I do too.
All right, we got a good onecoming up, good deal, thank you
guys Appreciate it.
All right, andy, we might havemy two favorite coaches of any
coaches at Toss River.
I'm saying it right now that'ssuch a compliment.
I know I've been talking aboutyou guys the whole time because
(42:26):
you are the only undefeatedbasketball team left.
I'm not trying to put too muchpressure on you.
Speaker 10 (42:30):
I was going to say
can you knock on wood Knock on
wood.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
Pretty good season,
so far right.
Speaker 10 (42:36):
Yeah, yes.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
Alright, we're here
talking about basketball, we're
here talking about the coaches, but we're also talking about
alumni and you are all three.
Speaker 10 (42:43):
Yes, yeah, alright,
what year?
Speaker 1 (42:45):
Tell us your year
that you graduated.
Did you both play for CoachSimmons?
Speaker 10 (42:48):
We did yeah.
Speaker 8 (42:50):
Man, he's been here
for that long.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
Not when I should
have said that.
Speaker 10 (42:52):
All right, what year
I graduated?
In 2016.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
2016.
Speaker 10 (43:00):
I graduated in 2015.
In 2015.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
All right, and what
are we thinking?
How's the year going?
Let's talk about your teamfirst.
Speaker 10 (43:08):
I think it's going's
going great, I mean the nice
part is we're so deep yeah andwe have a lot of games coming up
.
Next week we have four games, and so I think you do have four
games.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
That's kind of crazy,
it's a crazy week is that all
just because of cancellationsand all that?
Speaker 10 (43:22):
yes, no games and
then also because two teams
don't have a jv team, we had toschedule an out of county game.
So that's where the like wherethe John Carroll Friday game
comes into play.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
So we don't really
know what are we expecting, what
teams are we looking out for?
Speaker 10 (43:38):
I think John Carroll
and Polly should both be good
games.
Speaker 7 (43:40):
They should be good
games.
Speaker 10 (43:41):
Chesapeake should be
good as well.
They're undefeated right now.
Speaker 1 (43:45):
No, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (43:47):
Well, before we go
any farther, I don't even know
that we really asked who we'reinterviewing.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
I just told him my
name because I told him that my
two favorite coaches.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
Do a proper
introduction.
Well, the reason I'm sittinghere thinking we've got to stop
a little bit, because you callthem coaches.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
Yeah, what do you
call them?
Speaker 2 (44:09):
Well, a friend would
even not do this justice.
So Chance and Savannah Herndonyeah, what do you call them?
Well, a friend would even notdo this justice.
So Chance and Savannah Herndon.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
Yes, the Herndon
royalty.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
So Cash was a.
He didn't even come.
These are the Herndon girlsthat I had the pleasure of
hanging out with the parents tocome watch play here and, like I
was telling you when you wereinterviewing Zivic, I was was
late came in the gym.
It was halftime.
Savannah he'd won up from halfcourt and it went in and I
(44:38):
watched that emotion and thecoach was celebrating to be able
to see did you guys rememberthis.
Yeah, she did all right andthey both went on to play at the
same college.
Yes, I had the privilege Sundayto go to the biggest, coolest
baby shower ever Because, as youcan tell, tess is probably two
(45:03):
weeks away from having anotherbaby.
Speaker 10 (45:05):
Hey, I guess
February 14th you did.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
It's that close.
Speaker 10 (45:10):
I'm five weeks away
technically, but I don't know.
Speaker 1 (45:14):
The last time we
talked you said that you had
planned it.
So counties are like the daybefore or something like that
the county should be just a weekto the date before my due date.
Speaker 10 (45:22):
So we'll see.
My goal is to make it.
I mean.
Speaker 1 (45:25):
All right, worst case
scenario, I can step in.
Speaker 10 (45:27):
Yeah, okay, perfect,
I All right.
Worst case scenario I can stepin.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
Yeah, okay, perfect,
I'm ready to step in.
Speaker 10 (45:29):
I told her I was
like I don't know if I can stand
up.
The last time I stood up waswhen Cash was playing.
Speaker 1 (45:35):
Oh, no, no, I don't
stand up.
You have to stand up.
Oh gosh, I like to just sit onthe bench because I like to get
a seat better, that's all I like.
Speaker 10 (45:42):
The last time I
stood up was league at wise and
they needed me to stand up andcoach them and I got a technical
and almost got ejected so she'sin the hospital.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
You get thrown out
all of a sudden.
Speaker 10 (45:56):
I'm the coach there
you go I can do it first county
championship under your belt.
How was?
Speaker 2 (46:00):
how cool would that
be I'll tell you the story one
of the one of the coolest thingsthat they bring to the table
they've actually are doing now.
They're both teachers.
You're a teacher, she's ateacher Harwood.
Speaker 8 (46:17):
We'll get you here
eventually.
Speaker 10 (46:20):
I try every year.
Speaker 8 (46:21):
Really.
Speaker 10 (46:22):
I really like it
there.
I do, I do Really, I do, Ireally really enjoy the people,
I'm a good recruiter but she'smore.
They try Well the enjoy thepeople.
I'm a good recruiter but she'swarm.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
She is.
They try.
Well, the talk would be as fastas a ball in a podcast session.
Is that you girls are like?
All you want is still on thefeet.
Speaker 8 (46:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (46:39):
It's amazing.
You guys are great we had lastyear.
Our girls are great.
We have so much fun with them.
We were talking about it theother day.
We fun with them.
We were talking about it theother day.
We haven't had the opportunityto practice in a while, just
because of games and snow andeverything I miss practicing
with them.
I miss having those momentswhere we see them get better.
(47:01):
It's awesome.
I do too.
Seeing their progress overpractice is crazy.
They've really improved thisyear, jv teams especially, you
get to see such a progressionthroughout the season.
It's awesome.
Speaker 1 (47:12):
Yeah, it is awesome
and you guys have a hard job.
Jv coaches are that's a toughjob the best players they steal
from you and then you've got toget them ready, in essence, to
become there.
But you've done a good jobbecause look at this team, this
team's been progressivelygetting better.
The varsity, the JV hey man, wegot a lot of good years in
front of us.
Speaker 10 (47:32):
There's a lot of
good players coming up.
Speaker 1 (47:34):
It's so exciting,
yeah, all right.
So what do you think?
Give us your insight on thevarsity team.
They just got a win.
They're on a little bit of arun here.
Speaker 10 (47:41):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
How far can they go?
Speaker 10 (47:43):
I think I mean
really far, especially in
playoffs, like Especially inplayoffs, like I definitely see
another repeat countychampionship.
Speaker 1 (47:49):
Oh, that would be
nice.
Speaker 10 (47:50):
That would be so
nice.
I think it's in their courtLike they get to determine it.
I think that we will win ourregion that is something we
haven't done since the 80s, Ibelieve, is that right, I think
82.
Don't quote me, wow, it's beensince the 80s.
But I feel like, especiallybecause we played those harder
(48:10):
teams early on, our record doesnot reflect how good we really
are.
Speaker 1 (48:14):
I would agree.
Speaker 10 (48:15):
So I think it was.
We lost five games by a totalof 21 points.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
And so we had a lot
of close ones.
So Civic was just on heresaying all that.
Speaker 10 (48:22):
But I also think
that benefited us because we had
those moments of actual gametime practice when the score was
close.
So when the score is close inplayoffs we're going to have
those moments of actual gametime practice when the score was
close.
So when the score is close inplayoffs, we're going to have
those moments and we're back on.
Speaker 1 (48:34):
I agree, I agree.
And then the other theme oftonight has been we had one of
the your JV coach from the boysmade a big statement and I have
to keep bringing this up becausehe made a big statement.
He said that this currentvarsity boys team is the best
team that he's ever seen atSouth River.
What do you say, having you'veseen a lot of teams come through
(48:56):
and they got a lot to prove, yet because we're not through
with the season yet, yes.
Where do you, what do you thinkof this boys varsity?
Speaker 10 (49:04):
team.
I love the way this boysvarsity team plays.
I think that they always havesomeone who can score.
Even if someone's having an offnight, it doesn't matter,
someone else will step up.
But I have to be biased.
I have to say that Cash'ssenior year was the best boys
varsity team that we've seenhere.
I was going to say the samething.
(49:25):
I think Cash's senior year is ahard one to beat.
But I will say this team alwaysfinds a way to win.
They always find a way to win, which is an amazing trait to
have.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
Yeah, now Cash, if
you're listening, there's been a
lot of debate about this.
I did also discover I didn'tknow this was it 1983?
1983.
1983 still has the best, themost wins.
No, the best record it's 1883still has the best, the most
wins, no, the best record in thehistory, and I guess Cash's
team tied it but had one moreloss, yes, so they still hold
(49:57):
the record, but they're sweatinga little bit with these guys.
I can imagine because this is agood team.
Speaker 10 (50:02):
I mean they have a
good record to start the season.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
All right, end it
with this.
You have four games next week.
Speaker 10 (50:09):
Four games.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
Give us the rundown.
Speaker 10 (50:12):
So Tuesday we play
Chesapeake.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
That's going to be a
good one, right.
Good win 10-1, 8-1, somewherein that number.
Speaker 10 (50:18):
I think your JV's
undefeated right now, so it
should be a good game, I think.
Speaker 1 (50:21):
I just checked it out
they're 8-1.
They have one loss.
Who it was to, though?
Speaker 10 (50:26):
I can't remember
either.
Speaker 1 (50:28):
Yeah, but you never
know these websites and I'll
take a break.
So maybe they were defeated, Idon't know True.
Speaker 10 (50:34):
I know that varsity
was undefeated until recently.
Speaker 1 (50:36):
Is this a new thing
that Chesapeake basketball has
been good?
Speaker 10 (50:40):
Yeah, also.
They haven't gotten to the bulkof their schedule yet.
So I think here, at the end,we're going to yeah.
Speaker 11 (50:47):
All right.
Speaker 10 (50:48):
I might fluctuate a
little bit.
Yeah, and then Thursday'sCrofton.
Speaker 1 (50:51):
Okay, I'd like to
beat Crofton Me too, All right,
if I can just put a request in.
Pound me Like, beat him by like80.
So when?
Speaker 10 (51:00):
Chance says pull the
press off, do not.
Speaker 1 (51:08):
I'm going to be
players in the past, hey.
Speaker 10 (51:11):
I will take any
excuse to keep the press on.
Keep the press.
Speaker 1 (51:15):
I actually love when
you guys keep it.
That's probably a bad thing tosay, but I love when we keep the
press on.
Speaker 10 (51:19):
She tries, she would
do it the entire game.
I would.
Speaker 1 (51:22):
Yeah, I hate that
running clock too.
Speaker 10 (51:24):
Yeah, it goes so
quick.
It's up and there's two minutesleft.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
It's like I
understand, I understand All
right, crofton.
Speaker 10 (51:30):
And then Friday John
Carroll, okay, and then
Saturday is Pauly.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
Are both Friday,
saturday, here.
Speaker 10 (51:35):
Friday's away.
Speaker 1 (51:36):
Friday's away.
Speaker 10 (51:37):
It's four o'clock,
so we have to leave school early
, all of the things.
Speaker 1 (51:42):
Players like it,
parents not so much.
Speaker 10 (51:43):
Yeah, all right, and
then probably Saturday at home
at 10.
Speaker 1 (51:47):
Okay, I'm okay with
that.
Speaker 10 (51:49):
Yeah, we can work
with that, not too, early, not
too early, yeah.
Speaker 1 (51:52):
All right.
So come out and watch this JVteam, because they're doing
something special.
We're going to go back.
We're going to try to getback-to-back county
championships.
Speaker 10 (51:58):
Back-to-back county
championships.
Speaker 1 (51:59):
That's the plan, you
guys should be walking around
the school there.
Yep, we got there.
Thank you both.
Thank you for having us.
We're going to go watch a biggame, Yep big game and we're
going to see if this team doesbetter than Cassius did.
Speaker 10 (52:13):
We'll see Alright,
thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (52:17):
We got another player
here with us.
Speaker 2 (52:18):
We gotta introduce
yourself.
Speaker 1 (52:19):
Alright, you gotta
introduce yourself and your year
.
Speaker 9 (52:22):
Russell Thung 95
graduating 95, Russell.
I like it.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
I like it how you
doing.
Speaker 9 (52:29):
All right.
Speaker 1 (52:30):
All right.
Speaker 9 (52:30):
Come to see a good
game.
Support my old teammate, greatcoach, that's right because you
played with Darren right.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Yeah, I remember we
talked last year.
You're a returner.
You're a return guest on theshow.
Thank you for coming back again.
What's it mean for you to comeout each and every year?
Speaker 9 (52:48):
You're here for
alumni, love the sport.
Would like to come to moregames, but probably support more
when I live in Pasadena, soprobably support when you're
playing off the roads for someroad games.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
So tell us about your
teams.
Speaker 9 (53:00):
You played on some
good teams here, definitely
Freshman year, playing withAllie I think Darren was a
sophomore then, yeah, and AllieEbony Hicks Darren was still a
man then also, but we had agreat team then.
Corey Davis, one of my bestfriends, yeah, had a lot of nice
talent on that spot.
Rob Randall.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
And what year was
this?
What's your best team that youwent through here with?
Speaker 9 (53:26):
I would say the best
team.
I don't know about the bestrecord, but my freshman year
with Allie and Hicks and DarrenI guess my junior year, darren
and Rob's senior year was a goodyear too.
Well, my sophomore year.
Speaker 1 (53:43):
Because our debate
tonight has been what is the
best team to ever come throughSouth River.
Speaker 9 (53:49):
I mean, I look at
that being like I'm not sure if
you guys are Cowboys fans.
Speaker 1 (53:55):
We are definitely not
Cowboys fans, especially on the
eve of the Commanders game.
Speaker 9 (54:00):
I just didn't want to
be disrespectful.
Emmitt Smith is considered oneof the greatest running backs
because of stats, yes, but Istill put Bo Jackson and Walter
Payton and all those guys overhim, okay, okay, okay Okay.
So the record might not show, but I put teams that I played
against.
There's a lot of teams in ourhistory here, all right.
(54:22):
So who?
Vardy and them also had a greatsquad and they were like a
foundation for it.
Speaker 1 (54:28):
So you still got to
give me the answer, though.
What, in your opinion, is thebest team, regardless of record,
that has ever stepped foot onthat court at South?
Speaker 9 (54:39):
River.
I would say my freshman year, your freshman year, yeah, my
freshman year.
Speaker 1 (54:44):
You'd go up against
anybody.
Speaker 9 (54:46):
I was just a
defensive player on that team
but like I looked at HowleyCorey Davis, like I said at
Allie Corey Davis, like I said, one of my best friends.
He's also a great guard as well.
We had depth.
We had bench Fred Goodson, wehad a lot of depth.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
He was a bolster on
us, yeah definitely I'll tell
you another one.
See, each person we interviewis pretty cool, but I walked in.
He says he's from Pasadena.
Yeah, I ended up coaching somelittle ones and we were invited
to go to this tournament andeverybody.
So we see these kids warming upand I didn't see the coach yet
(55:21):
and everybody's sweating.
He's a group of kids and thecoach called out and I look over
at his head and I'm thinking tomyself he gives back and I'll
tell you.
they smoked us and we wereundefeated right around this
area.
We went to Pasadena.
I said that's all you're goingto learn is by losing anybody
(55:42):
can win and just go to TastyFreeze and have ice cream.
When you lose, you go to thegrind.
He put water on me so bad man.
I still remember.
Speaker 9 (55:50):
He's still in pain
for that.
Once we got older, he got hisget back.
Speaker 5 (55:54):
He got his get back.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
And it's a pleasure
to always see you with the kids
and I remember because Igraduated in 1989, and I
remember coming back and sittingin the stands and watching this
group and I got to tell youstats is what's driving this
team, team, but the heart thatteam he had with them guys, they
had to know they had some heart, they had some heart yeah,
(56:17):
kenny dumb will tell you thesame thing.
Yeah, he, uh, you know fred'sover there at the green turtle
working this young man.
They had some heart yeah theydid.
Speaker 1 (56:28):
So what do do you
think about the team that your
old teammate is building hereand the program that he's
putting together here?
Speaker 9 (56:35):
at.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
South River.
Speaker 9 (56:36):
Definitely it's
through the roof, like he's
doing a great job and like theguys are always buying into the
system.
When I played, we could sayeverybody bought into Mr Dunn's
system, but not everybody.
Some people had their ownagenda and stuff.
But he did a great job ofblending a lot of, I guess,
different egos and stuff likethat.
(56:58):
I just always looked at myselfas a football player, not a
basketball player.
I love to dunk.
I'd take two or three dunks over20 points any day, just to get
the crowd hype Just to get thecrowd hype yeah and be a
defensive player.
We need a little bit of just toget the crowd hyped, just to
get the crowd hyped, yeah, andbe a defensive player yeah.
Speaker 1 (57:15):
We need a little bit
of that.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
We need a little bit
of that right now.
We've had Jaden a couple timesthere.
We do it.
Yeah, his dunk is spectacular.
I'll never forget the dunk hedid at 90.
Just dunking was never back hit, he dunked it.
I mean to tell you the way hecame into this game.
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Yeah, we got to get
loud tonight.
We got another big one tonight.
They are chasing some statsright here.
This team could be the best, the most winning team in the
history of South River.
We're sitting at what?
13-1?
Speaker 2 (57:46):
13-1, but we're 13-1
at one of the highest level
tournaments.
Speaker 1 (57:51):
Oh, I know, I know
that was fantastic.
I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 2 (57:55):
I didn't have to work
but to get on the TV at night
to see them guys winning againstthe guys.
Speaker 1 (58:01):
Against teams from
all over the country.
Speaker 2 (58:02):
Yeah, oh man, it was
breathtaking.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
It was exciting.
Speaker 2 (58:05):
So it's big?
Yeah, it's big league.
Speaker 1 (58:06):
Yeah, it's big league
.
We got a big one tonight.
I think we're going to beatthem pretty bad, but we'll see
Hopefully.
Speaker 2 (58:12):
We're going to remain
humble.
We're going to eat your mouth.
Speaker 1 (58:15):
You need to remain
humble?
I don't need to.
I'm the guy on the podcast.
I can say whatever.
I want to say there we go.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
Thank you for coming
out again, always a pleasure to
see Every alumni game.
Speaker 1 (58:27):
That's awesome.
Appreciate it and let's go getanother win.
Let's watch this team play.
Speaker 9 (58:31):
Definitely All right.
Thank you, sir.
Guys, have a good day.
All right, you too.
Speaker 2 (58:35):
All righty.
Well, tom, I have the privilegeof introducing you to the
mascot.
When I played, he was themascot for us.
The mascot, yes, this is theone and only Craig Drucker.
Speaker 1 (58:50):
Craig, welcome to
Hock Talk.
Thank you for being here.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
So, craig, when I
graduated, you were one of the
ones.
I just was like I'm going tomiss him because he's a plethora
of knowledge.
He knows stats from everything.
Well, now Craig is a big fishworking at Safeway, so I have
the pleasure to see him.
Every time I go to the grocerystore he emails me.
Every game can tell youanything, but Craig is here.
(59:20):
Craig, you were very valuablewith everything that you brought
, which I think we got aquestion going out there what do
you think the best basketballteam at South River?
What year was that?
Speaker 1 (59:32):
91-92.
91-92.
Okay, tell us about that team.
Russell Tung, darren Hall.
I don't have too much memory.
Eamon Hick, seen at Game.
Wing Shot Larry Gross, and wejust had Russell on.
Yes, so you're going with thatteam as the best that ever
played at South River.
Same wing shot Larry Gross, nice, and we just had Russell on
yes.
Yes, so you're going with thatteam as the best that ever
(59:54):
played at South River yes.
Now how do you compare thisyear's team?
I would say equal par, equalpar.
Speaker 5 (01:00:05):
But they haven't done
it yet.
They have not.
Yeah, also, lucy Potomac.
That was a heartbreaker.
I had to come, yes.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Yes, it is.
What did you think about beinghere tonight?
Speaker 6 (01:00:18):
Because we're
privileged to be here tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
Yeah, thanks.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
What do you think
going forward?
How do you think we're going todo tonight against everyone?
We're going to kick their butts.
I love it.
You heard it from Craig.
Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
You heard it here
first.
That's right.
Speaker 5 (01:00:34):
Craig, what is your
favorite memory here at South
when Evan Hicks did the game, when he shot against Glenn
Burney?
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
You know Craig.
I used to watch him, in thecoldest of weathers, walk up and
down the football field and hewas like Kenny Dunn's
right-handed as soon as we'd getdone he'd be right here in the
gym.
He was at every one of ourbasketball games.
He would put the mascot suit on.
And I'm telling you, when yougo to Safeway and you tell Craig
, he'll come to you and he'lltell you everything that went
(01:01:03):
wrong in that game.
Speaker 1 (01:01:05):
Here's what I
appreciate about you, craig.
Yeah, I don't know.
I've seen you a lot.
Every time I come in, I'mwearing a college or a high
school.
I appreciate that you give methe knowledge.
I sometimes come in with PennState, I sometimes come in with
Virginia Tech, I come in withSouth River and you always got
an interesting fact for me.
That's what makes my day comingthe safe way.
Thank you Absolutely.
(01:01:25):
Well, hey, I appreciate youcoming here.
Yes, let's go get a win.
Yes, and then give me aprediction.
Give me a prediction of thenumber of wins.
Speaker 9 (01:01:34):
This team will get by
the end of the year.
Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
I think they finally
get to 20.
They get to 20.
20?
You heard it, you heard it here20, which makes us what we have
to be 21-1.
But does that put us as statechampions?
Yes, we have to win 20 gamesfirst, then the playoffs.
The playoffs are a muchdifferent animal, all right.
So you're saying a plus 20season, right?
(01:01:58):
Yes, yes, I love it.
