In this episode of Hawk Talk, South River High School's girls basketball coach Mike Zivik shares the exhilarating story behind their state championship win, outlining a journey from a challenging 2-5 start to ultimate glory at the University of Maryland. The episode delves into the team's development over the season, highlighting the strategic coaching, mental resilience, and unwavering community support that fueled their success. Coach Zivik’s tactical use of the team’s depth to wear down opponents played a pivotal role, particularly in the championship game, where South River’s frequent rotation of players contrasted sharply with their opponent's reliance on a few key starters, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback.

The championship's setting added an extraordinary dimension to the victory, as the team walked the same tunnels as Big Ten legends, buoyed by the vibrant support of five busloads of fans from their hometown and the local community cheering from The Turtle in Edgewater. Coach Zivik highlighted the psychological strength of the team, emphasizing their ability to stay positive and composed under pressure, which was crucial to their comeback and ultimate victory. This episode not only celebrates their tactical success but also paints a vivid picture of the emotional and community-driven aspects that contributed to their memorable championship run.

This episode also marks an exciting transition for Hawk Talk as host Tom Frank welcomes new co-hosts Grey Frank and Jaden McDuffie, who bring fresh energy and perspective to the show. Their enthusiastic participation in a March Madness draft competition adds a fun, interactive element that basketball fans will appreciate as they debate tournament predictions and strategies.

We've got a good one for youhere today.
We have the state championshipwinning coach, mike Zivik, on
and we're going to hear allabout the championship run.
But first we got a funannouncement for the spring
season.
I'm going to have two co-hostson the show here with me.
They're going to have their ownsegment.
They're going to try toincorporate, they're going to

(00:41):
try to hang with me here.
We'll see if they can.
All right, we got welcome toHawk Talk.
We got Gray Frank and we gotJayden McDuffie.
What's up, fellas?
What's up?
What's up?
What's up?
How we doing?
You ready to do this?
I'm ready, let's go, let's go.

(01:02):
All right, we're going to.
Team is coming off achampionship season.
How are you coach?
You're still.
Are you still on cloud nine, orwhat's going on?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Oh yeah, there's very few moments that could equate
to what happened at lights.
Yes, a hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So let's go back to that for a minute.
We had a.
We had absolute craziness lastFriday night at the University
of Maryland.
I mean, what a game Was it?
Anything you expected?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
About yes, yes and no .
I actually thought they'd breaka little sooner.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
You thought the other team would break a little
sooner.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yes, I thought we'd wear them down.
I give them credit that theylast in three quarters.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Oh, I like the mentality.
So take us through the wholeday, like, take us through from
like the beginning to the end.
I mean everything from gettingon the bus to showing up.
I mean we had a crowd therelike I've never seen before.
Like, just take me through thevisuals from the time you got on
that bus until the time you gotback on that bus.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Get on the bus.
That's when the nerves startedkicking in a little bit.
I'm glad we got there early,we're able to watch a very good
boys game and because the firstgame went to overtime, that game
was pushed back.
Just being there, like walkingthrough the tunnels, like this
is where players walk around.
It's just, you know, you seethese legends that have played

(02:28):
in the Big Ten and they walk thesame tunnels that you just
walked.
So that was kind of cool and itactually kind of calmed me down.
To be quite honest.
Well, being there I saw a lotof familiar faces, a couple of
coaches, ads that I know thatcame up to talk to me and
congratulated me.
So it definitely relaxed mevirtually.

(02:49):
I think it relaxed the kids.
Now I knew once the gamestarted it was going to be a
different story, because thenthe lights come on and those
nerves come right back up.
But I mean, we just, you know,we had a game plan, our game
plan, going in.
I think I told you same gameplan we had at first team
indicator.
Just wear them down.
They have five really goodstarters and they didn't have

(03:13):
much else and we their fivestarters played 30 minutes each.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, they did.
They played a long game.
They were noticeably worn downby the end of that game.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
And we played.
We had three kids in 20 minutesand everyone else was in the
teams.
So we had five kids that werein the team.
And I'll tell you this mucheven some of our kids were worn
down.
I mean, it's very.
Reagan asked me to come out ofthe game at one point, but she
shouldn't hire him.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
So can you imagine the other team?
Yeah, yeah, what'd you guysthink of this game?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
uh, I mean personally , it was a great game came down
the wire.
Uh, just to see.
You know, key, come in theclutch key came in the clutch.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
That's d1 key.
Yeah, d1 key, I like that yeah, that environment was crazy.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I wasn't there, I was on a visit, but then I was
watching my phone, knew my momwe're in the mall.
We got lost because we were sofocused on the game.
We found our car after the mallbut we were so tuned into the
game.
The comeback was crazy.
It was great for our communityand you know, like you said
before, like the fans, that wasthe other thing.
Once we got going it was justover.

(04:21):
The fans got into it and webrought a crowd that's big props
to Klingle.
He had five bosses come.
I mean the whole community cameout and supported.
I know even back in Edgewaterthey were playing the game at
the Turtle.
So, like it was a pretty.
Yeah, it was a pretty good deal.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
I mean, who was at the Turtle?
Everybody was there.
Everywhere I looked, I saweverybody.
It was amazing.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
There were some other people that weren't able to
make it.
They watched a great game withthe Turtle.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
They did and it was a great game.
I mean it was.
I got a little nervous, I'll behonest with you, when they got
up a little bit, but thenkicking it into a whole other
gear in the fourth quarter wasjust impressive.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Honestly, I was never nervous.
I just Look at this guy, Ibelieve.
No, I was never nervous.
I just Look at this guy.
No, I believed what we weregoing to do was going to come to
fruition.
It just took a little longerthan I thought.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
That.
It did that.
It did I mean what Give me the?
I mean how was that bus rideback?

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Oh, that was.
I mean, you know, I talked to acouple coaches that have won
the state championshipbeforehand Brennan O'Connell,
duke's guy, he coaches atPikesville Girls and I coach at
North Point and you know, Iguess the thing, the common

(05:37):
theme among all of them wasenjoy it and do not make it too.
Try not to make it toostressful.
Because the one coach saidafter I won it it was more of a
relief than happiness Because itwas like this weight was taking
off me, because I put this hugeweight on my back and I
couldn't, I didn't even enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
I can see that that's good advice.
I didn't think about that.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
I mean it is because you put so much focus and time
into it.
It's just like you want this tohappen and you can't, and you
don't even get to enjoy it.
So, luckily, I talked to somepeople.
I mean, we had set up, likethey came out of the tunnel
right at the end of the gamewhen we knew, that's when we
went back and talked because weknew that they were going to
hand out trophies.
So like we were definitely moreprepared for like just the

(06:20):
nuances of what, how the day wasgoing to go about, than the
other team was too that probablyplayed a big difference.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Um, I do have to ask you the thing that I think most
uh fans were wondering what, what, what, what was with the
choice of uh sock color?

Speaker 2 (06:36):
uh, I've been wearing , uh, I got my snack socks.
I've been wearing them all yearand I went with my favorite
Sour Patch.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
You had Sour Patch.
I didn't realize they were SourPatch candy socks.
So where does the trophy go?
Is the trophy still with you?

Speaker 2 (06:56):
No, no, it's at school, it's sitting in the main
office.
We'll probably put it in thetrophy case at some point.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
You didn't bring it with you.
You should have at least had itfor a week or two.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
No, no, no, it stays there.
I didn't do anything, I justshowed up these girls they
wanted it.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
They did want it, and that was awesome to see.
So I hate to look forward.
But the Divine Nine are gone.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, yeah, they're going to have some big shoes to
fill.
I definitely think wedefinitely have some capable
kids.
It's just going to come down tolike, how do we gel together?
Because we're a tight team.
I think that played adifference.
We never got down, even when wewere losing.

(07:41):
We never got down.
We never got upset at ourselveswhen we made a mistake.
We just played an X-play, anX-play, an X-play, and I think
that really helped us.
When the other team, when westarted clawing back and getting
closer and closer, you couldsee them get a little frustrated
with each other.
The kid made a bad pass, ormissed a shot, or didn't play
defense and that was never thecase with us and or didn't play

(08:02):
defense, and that was never thecase with us, and I definitely
think that played into it.
So you know I've got my workcut out for me again and we'll
have to form a cohesive unit and, you know, go out there and
hopefully defend that title.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Well now, what are you going to do with your time?
You got nothing to do afterschool every day.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
No, that's not true.
Now I'm helping coach track formy son's school, my son's
dollar school.
You're coaching track?

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Yes, that should be interesting.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
I mean, I was a runner so I did it.
I mean there's two things youtell them to run and run faster.
There's not much to it.
Yeah, little technique, Littletechnique, Get off.
Look, I do long distance.
I do some field events.
I did have to learn how tothrow a shot put.
I taught kids how to throw ashot put.
That's about it.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
That is about it.
Now we're off to spring sports.
We're going to miss basketball.
Basketball was fun this yearGirls team, boys team.
I mean, I kind of think we're abasketball school.
At this point Everybody sayslacrosse.
I don't know about that.
I think we are a basketballschool.
Now lacrosse.
You can prove me wrong.

(09:16):
This year we're going to see it.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
We're going to.
I mean basketball, you know, Ithink both teams are going to be
stacked pretty good next year.
Football team's looking prettygood.
I mean we got a lot theschool's definitely there's a
good group of athletes in it,that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
So what do you?
What do you tell?
What's your?
What's your last statement hereto the fans, to the all the
players that you're going to becoming up next year, you're
going to have a good programhere for a number of years.
What do you tell them?
They get fired up.
I mean, you are now a statechampionship winning coach.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Nah, I'm still the same person I was before that
game, and you know, just to thefans, thank you.
I mean, the six men reallyhelped, that's for sure.
Our bench, our fans, everyone.
They gave us that energy to getthrough that fourth quarter,
that's for sure.
And to the kids coming up,let's get to work.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
I mean, I already see some of these kids in the gym.
We're already starting up.
I know I like that.
I like that.
I like it too.
What do you guys think?
Any, too.
What do you guys think?
Any other questions do you have?
I mean this you guys are in anew situation.
You're co-hosts of hawk talkand you got a teacher and a
coach that basically has toanswer any question you give him
hey, these are big shoes tofill.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Let's go, fellas just off the top of my head yeah
yeah, um, would you say theopposing crowd at all was a
factor.
I mean they definitely theywere loud.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
They were loud.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
No, no, they were loud Like at the beginning of
the game.
I was like holy crap.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
I'm like they're yelling Our fans are yelling
back and forth.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
I'm like it was a great atmosphere.
I loved it.
It was a college atmosphere, ahundred percent.
If it was like at, let's justsay, towson, it would have been,
you know, like, because wedidn't have the upper bowl.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Yeah, I'll tell you what I saw.
The only the only thing thatthey outdid us in, in my opinion
, is their crowd was a littlebit more coordinated.
They they had, they had adedicated hype man.
Who who is who is telling themwhat, what things to do we need.
I think, if we go back to astate championship, we need a
dedicated hype man.
You guys need to work on thatnext year.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Hey, I'm going to tell you guys this too I think
this is where we need to likekind of we're having this
success.
We need to like harness this.
It's one of the things thatI've always been not down on,
like just kind of frustratedwith our school, like the school
spirit.
I think we can have more.
When I played back in highschool, like you couldn't get

(11:49):
into the gym, it was, I mean, now, granted, it was a smaller
gym and a smaller school, butlike you couldn't get in.
It was, you know, kind of likeplaying at St Mary's every year,
yeah, and people were justcoming out, coming out, kind of
like playing at St Mary's everyyear, people were just coming
out, coming out.
We only had 300 kids in theschool, so we're a small school,
but I mean, yeah, I want toharness this.
Get the people out for football, field hockey, soccer, let's go

(12:13):
.
Let's get people out, like getinvolved in the school.
I think it will help outeverything.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
I agree, love the sound of that Love, the sound of
that Love, the sound of it.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Did you have a question, jay?
Yeah, I have a question.
I have a question.
So we went down to where, southCarolina Yep, y'all played some
tough teams.
How do you think those gamesreally helped y'all push for the
state run?
You know what?
At one point we're 2-5.
That's right.
Think about that.
Think about that.
We're 2-5, and we're gettingbeat up, but we're losing games

(12:45):
by 3-5 points.
We just couldn't close it outand it was getting in our kids'
heads.
I thought At that point I waslike we just need something
positive, just somethingpositive.
And we got the last one downthere and then we came back and
then we got Ann Atlas andstarted rolling and I definitely

(13:05):
think they shaped who we wereand I'm glad we had those games.
They helped us in the endbecause in that last game we
were losing, we weren't freakedout.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Yeah, for sure.
That is crazy.
You were two and five at onepoint.
I had forgotten about that.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yep, woo and all winnable games.
Point, I had forgotten aboutthat.
Yep and all winnable games, allgames.
Honestly, if we played all fiveof those games at the end of
the season, I think we win themall.
They're great.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
We just weren't ready to win then yeah yeah, it's all
about peaking at the right time.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
Yeah, the evolution of the team throughout the year,
just like march, that's rightand look at that.
That's a perfect segue marchmadness this guy's already good
March Madness.
Now you're not even watchingany games right now.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
I'm going down right now.
I was watching some of my house.
Who do you guys like?
I'll tell you my team.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Now, okay, let's talk about who we like, and then
we're going to have a littlecontest here.
We're going to play.
Okay, all right, I'll explainthe rules in a second.
Okay, let's go around the room.
Let's start over here withJaden.
Who do you like?
Who do you like, just ingeneral, in general, in general,
who's going to win it?

Speaker 3 (14:10):
I really, really, really, really like Auburn.
I really like Auburn.
I like their bench energy.
I know they got a couple olderguys.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
I know they got a couple younger guys.
I feel like that combo of theold and the young I feel like
that will take them far in thisone, especially the bench energy
.
That's what you really need.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Sometimes the starters aren't clicking.
You need somebody to come hit ashot.
Change momentum.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
They got Todd Pettiford coming off the bench
and I feel like that's going tobe huge for them, so Auburn.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
You're going with Auburn.
Auburn, I think I got to takeDuke.
I mean, if you look futurewizard Cooper Flagg, he's near
unstoppable.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
I hope he's the future.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
I mean, they just have so many five stars
surrounded by them.
I mean they're in a perfectspot to succeed.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
I hate agreeing with you, but I do like Duke, but I
like Florida.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Man.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
Florida is tough and they played the best conference
and they won the best conferencetournament they can close out
games.
They can close out games.
They got a lot of players.
I agree.
I like Florida sneaking up onsome.
I don't know if they'resneaking up on anybody, but I
like Florida who you got.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
This is funny.
Every one of us is taking a oneseed.
I'm going Houston, they'regoing to get it this year,
houston.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
Houston.
You think they're even going toget by Gonzaga.
Yeah, oh yeah.
Who said Gonzaga's going to win?

Speaker 2 (15:31):
They are the and I'm a big Gonzaga fan.
I love Mark Q.
They're one of the.
So there's only a couple teamsthat could win.
According to previous years, you have to be top 10 in Ken
Palms in offensive defensiveefficiency.
Houston's one of them.
The funny thing is the othertwo teams are Duke and Florida

(15:53):
Florida.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
No, auburn.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
No, auburn, no, auburn.
Auburn had a scary one today,so maybe that refocuses them.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
That could refocus them.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Yeah, you're right, I was hoping they'd lose.
Funny story Two Churches.
Last year I went down May haveskipped one or two practices
Went down to the Bahamas towatch Watch Maryland play and
they were playing at the one.
We stayed at the Atlantis.
So the Battle for Atlantis wasthere and Auburn was there and I

(16:25):
actually ran into Pearl and Igot a picture of Bruce Pearl.
Ah, Nice guy.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
Nobody mentions Maryland.
Here we are in Maryland.
We were all just at theUniversity of Maryland on Friday
night and nobody mentionsMaryland.
Can Maryland make a run?

Speaker 2 (16:42):
Can our local?

Speaker 1 (16:43):
school make a run.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
I don't think any Big Ten team can make a run.
The conference is not thatstrong.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
That's a take right there.
That's a take right there.
All right, here's what we'regoing to do, All right Okay give
it to me.
We have four people.
We're going to have four-rounddraft.
We each.
We have four people.
We're going to have four rounddraft.
We each have to pick four teams.
Okay, all right now, here's howyou win.
You got to collect the mostpoints, but here's how points
come.
We take the the round so andyour seed so, if you're if in

(17:12):
round one, you get the seednumber times one.
In round two, you get the seednumber times two.
In round three the sweet 16 youget the seed number times two.
In round three the sweet 16,you get the seed number times
four.
In the elite eight get the seednumber times five.
In the final four, you get theseed number times seven.
And in the championship game, you get the seed number times

(17:33):
eight.
So if you think about that, anumber one seed might take you
all the way out.
But, man, if you can pick up a12 or a 13 or 11, and they only
win one or two games, you couldget some more points.
You could get some gold.
So what's our order going to be?

Speaker 2 (17:46):
here We'll go with the young bucks first.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
How about we'll snake it, but we'll go youngest to
oldest.
Which one of you guys is theyoungest?

Speaker 3 (17:56):
October 28th, 07.
Oh, I'm the youngest.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
All right, so we'll go Jaden Gray, and then what?
Maybe me?

Speaker 2 (18:04):
I'll be the oldest.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
We'll go Coach Civic and I'll go last.
I'll go last as the old guy,We'll get the next one and then
I get the number one pick afterthat.
All right, so Jaden is up firstwith his pick.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
All right, after a long time of data collected, I'm
going to have to go with UNC.
I feel like they're a low C,but they can compete with
anybody.
I mean, that's UNC still, man.
I know they barely lost to Duke, even though they have the flag
and all that, but they cancompete with anybody in the
country.
They're 11th seed.
They probably won two or threegames.
That's a lot of points.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
I feel like that's the best team I can take off the
bat.
So North Carolina, the numberone pick.
People might not like thisgoing two, especially because
they have a rough journey.
But give me a penny in theMemphis.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
Oh, you're taking Memphis this early.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
Led by PJ Haggerty, averaging 21.8 a game.
He's a baller.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Guy's got some stats for us.
All right, coach, you're up.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
So I'm going to come back to that one.
I'll go with Houston.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
You're going to take Houston.
He's taking the one seed.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
That's fine.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
All right, I'm going to take Ooh, this is a tough
one'm gonna take a two seed.
I'm gonna take st john's.
I was gonna go there.
Good job, I like it st john's.
And well, I get.
I get two back to back yeah, back.
Definitely definitely helpsthat all right, st john's, I

(19:36):
don't want to take someone inthat same.
All right, I'm gonna.
I'm gonna go'm going to go alittle crazy here.
I'm going to take a 13 seed.
I'm going to go with Yale.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
I've seen them play.
No, they got some dogs.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Yale and St John's.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
I'm sticking up in that northeast area they got a
16 kid left the yards in 20 ofthe game and they have defense
player here on the team.
He's a dog.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
I've seen him play.
I think you guys are countingout Texas A&M.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Like this St John's and Yale.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
Yale's legit I got mine.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
We go back to coach, so I'm thinking.
Here's a little stat for you, since the playing game happened,
one of them has made the Sweet16.
That's why I was pissed.
I'm going to take the other one.
Xavier, you're going withXavier.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
They're very consistent.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
I don't know.
I don't know if I like that one.
