So my question is, as a coach, how are we playing at Duke
University if we want to run apress break?
I mean, I was learning that.
It always seems to me that inthird grade I agree we just run
straight to the ball.
What are we doing?
We're high-profile basketballplayers.
Let's run a press break.
Let's set some off-ball screens.
Let's get each other open.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
You know, I don't see
why you don't give Houston any
credit for this.
It was entirely just, duke.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
We have been
preaching on Houston's defense
lately, but a press break couldhave helped Four guys run to the
ball.
I can't believe that.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Every one of us in
that room said Duke could not be
beat.
I think you called him afive-headed goat, if I'm
remembering correctly, I did.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
They chopped the head
off.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, they chopped
the head off of the goat.
Yeah, and then last nightFlorida beats Houston 65-63.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
That was a thriller
that was.
Now let me ask you this, Jaden, because I63.
That was a thriller, that was.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Now let me ask you
this, jaden, because I thought
the end was very weird.
Has anything like that everhappened to you, where you get
the ball for the winning shot, you go up to shoot the basket
and, instead of shooting it, hejust dropped it.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, I mean I don't.
So I guess he thought he wasgoing to get blocked.
I guess he thought he was goingto get blocked and he I mean I
don't, so I guess he thought hewas going to get blocked.
I guess he thought he was goingto get blocked and he tried to
I don't even know tried tobounce it on the ground but then
realized that it would be upand down if he took the dribble.
So I guess he decided just tonot take it.
I don't know what he was tryingto do.
I don't know what he was tryingto do.
I mean, I wasn't the nationalchampion.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
I think you have to
pass it at that point.
You either got to shoot it orpass it.
You can't just drop it.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, you got to find
somebody.
I mean, I think LJ Cryer shouldhave been the person taking the
shots.
He was your only player indouble digits.
The whole game.
Yeah, really honestly Gives ita high hand.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
So Florida wins the
national championship.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, man.
I mean I wasn't reallyimpressed by Clayton.
He had zero points at half.
I think a big piece of it thatwas Will Richards.
He went four from six fromthree at halftime and I think
that was a huge part BecauseClayton was off.
The first half they were off.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
That's because they
had great defense.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Shut them down.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Credit to them.
So I mean I guess Florida's ournational championship champion
Should have been Duke.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
What other final
words Is Cooper Flagg coming out
?
Speaker 3 (03:13):
I don't see why hey
man Coop's at that point to
where it's good problems to have.
It's his own legacy, Do youwant?
to be remembered as a greatcollege player If he gets a
natty he might have, arguably Imean it's good problems to have,
but like it's his own legacy.
Yeah, at this point Do you wantto be remembered as a great
college player?
Like, if he gets a natty, likehe might have, arguably like one
of the best college careers ifhe plays two to three years.
But like, why not go to theleague?
(03:34):
He's so young.
Like it's like he's coming outof high school if he goes to the
league.
It really is than LeBron was.
When LeBron was coming in,lebron was like 18.
So it's kind of like he gets ajump start and starts chasing
those points.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
That legacy in
general.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
That's all I'm saying
.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
How much older is
Cooper Flagg than the two of you
?
Speaker 3 (03:54):
He was 17 during the
season this year and I was 17
during this season.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
I think about that
for a second.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
His birthday's in
December, so I think his
birthday is in, so it has to belike February or January.
So I mean he's maybe a year anda month older than me.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Wow, that's pretty
crazy, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, and he's a
first-round pick, he's the first
overall pick and he's player ofthe year like undisputed.
So it's kind of wow.
I need to do better.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I don't know if
that's the moral of the story.
Just keep doing what you'redoing.
All right, let's talk someSouth River sports.
Our baseball team now is fiveand three after two wins and two
losses.
This past week we beat Meade inArundel but fell to North
County in Chesapeake.
This week we have two gamestoday, wednesday, at home versus
Glenn Burney and then on theroad versus Broadneck on Friday.
Our softball team sits at 5-4,also going two wins and two
(04:49):
losses this past week.
They will also play today, wednesday, at home versus Glen
Burnie and then on the roadversus Broadneck on Friday.
The track team is at Croftontoday and then at Saverna Park
Friday and Saturday.
Girls Lacrosse is now 4-2 aftergoing 1-2 this past week.
We lost to Marriott's Ridge andBroadneck but got back on track
yesterday versus Westminster.
They next play on Thursday athome versus Northeast and then a
(05:10):
doubleheader away on Saturday.
And we had a big one, a big winfor our boys lacrosse team last
Friday Double overtime winversus Broadneck, 6-5.
The boys now sit at 6-0.
Were either one of you at thatgame?
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Oh yes, we were both
there.
We were in attendance.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Tell me what that was
about.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I mean from my point
of view.
I mean, obviously, when I sawTrevor go down I kind of thought
we were in trouble but Ben kindof bailed us out there.
I mean just Ben Adams is a dogbro.
I mean it was a gritty game.
It was a gritty game it was.
People were getting laid out, people were getting thrown to
the ground, lots of flags flyingaround.
It's a rivalry game.
(05:49):
I tried to park and there'speople parked on the grass.
There's a lot of people.
It was a packed house.
People with the fans showed up.
We even had a student section.
It was a great game.
It was a good environment.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Did Broadneck bring a
lot of people?
Were there a lot of people onthe other side of the stadium?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I didn't really see a
crazy amount.
I almost kind of thoughtBroadneck, thought they kind of
had that in the bag.
Speaker 6 (06:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
We kind of shocked
them.
Yeah, because they just like Ididn't see no kids I was trying
to come with some of my friends.
I was trying to.
I always bet on my guys andnone of them showed up.
So I mean I didn't see manystudents from Broadneck there,
but I saw some.
Of course you see parents andstuff, but not a crazy amount of
fans, no.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Big win for us.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Huge.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Yeah, what do you
guys think of this team?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
This team could go
far.
This team could go far.
I mean, it's a run of park onthe clock.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
I can't wait for that
game.
When's that game?
Do we know off the top of yourhead?
I don't I should only have itcircled on my calendar honestly,
but well, the boys will sit atsix and oh, and you know what,
we are going to spend the restof our time on hawk talk.
This week, let's meet all ofour senior members of the boys.
South river lacrosse teamsounds good, let's go my name is
(07:02):
trevor phipps.
Speaker 8 (07:04):
Sounds good, let's go
.
My name is Trevor Phipps, benAdams, ethan Marcian Broden
Miller.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
All right, fellas, so
you guys are all seniors.
This is it, yes sir.
This is our last run, so beforewe even say anything, else,
what kind of run do we have inus?
All the way, all the way, allthe way, all the way.
We're undefeated right now.
Right yeah, undefeated so far.
So far so good, all right.
So introduce or no first.
What does it mean?
Let's just start at thebeginning.
(07:28):
What does it mean to be playinghere at South River?
You guys are seniors, have allof you played all four years?
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yep, yeah.
No he didn't.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
I have not.
No, you South River lacrosse.
Speaker 7 (07:41):
I would say the
brotherhood.
Everybody on the team hasalways been best friends, never
any drama, always hanging out.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
No drama on this team
.
No drama.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Yeah, I feel like the
chemistry is there.
We just click on the field.
Speaker 8 (07:54):
I moved in a little
late.
I came in in eighth grade, butas soon as I came in.
Everybody was super nice.
We all became best friends.
We all hang out on the weekendsafter school.
It's pretty great.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yeah, for me, being a
first year, definitely feel
accepted, welcomed by all theboys.
It's a pretty cool atmosphere.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Yeah, that's cool,
that's cool.
So, as we head into the end ofyour high school career, this is
it, guys.
It went by pretty fast.
How do you think lacrossehelped kind of shape who you are
today?
Speaker 8 (08:22):
Definitely the work
mentality.
I mean, coach Campbell keeps uspretty strict on off-season
workouts and then coming intothe season he expects that
you're ready.
So it kind of just shows you itcorrelates to life Prepare
yourself for it.
You've got to deal withwhatever you've got to go
through.
Speaker 7 (08:37):
Go unprepared, don't
show up on the first day and
just expect to be ready.
I like that.
I'd say for all the teams I'veever played for and the coaches
I've played for.
It's taught me how to be abetter person and also how to
help people out, just learningnew things or any struggles or
just really anything.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
I feel like lacrosse
as a whole just helped me do
stuff when I'm tired.
How do I put that?
It made me a harder worker, ina sense.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I kind of got where
you're going.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
It made me a harder
worker in a sense, because I'm a
middie and I run up and downthe field like 100 times a game.
I feel like I just have that doit tired mentality.
So I feel like that's just kindof helped me outside of
lacrosse.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Do you ever, as a
middie, turn to the goalie and
think I'm running up and down,up and down, up and down?
You, you run three feet, youdon't even move out the cage.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
I mean, oh yeah, it's
a thought, every game All right
.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
What do you?
Speaker 8 (09:31):
guys think, what
about the goalie?
Speaker 1 (09:33):
No, you don't have to
answer me about the goalie.
How have you improved, though, over the years, and what's made
you improve?
Speaker 8 (09:40):
Well, we've all
gotten bigger and stronger,
which definitely comes outtowards your upperclassmen years
Freshman year.
We, your upperclassmen yearsfreshman year.
We all came in.
We probably thought we werebetter than we were, and it was.
It was nice and humbling whenwe got here, um, having those
older kids to kind of put us inour place and teach us what we
needed to know.
So definitely growing mentallyand physically.
I mean, you come in and youdon't really know what to expect
(10:00):
and you kind of get put in yourplace as soon as you get here
with those those older guys.
Um, as you go through highschool, it kind of shapes itself
and you figure yourself out asa person where you stand.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
I feel like we came
in as freshmen Me, ethan, jacob,
connor we all made JV, trevor, made varsity, and after that
season you had what 40 goals.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
You had 40 goals your
freshman year, yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:24):
So he set the
standard pretty high, that's a
good standard yeah.
So I mean, like practicing withevery day like gets us better,
I mean, but yeah, the standard'salready set high because of him
.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
So we just got to.
So 40 goals your freshman year.
I got to ask how aboutsophomore and junior?
Speaker 7 (10:37):
Sophomore year I had
53.
And then junior year, I had 60.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
So 60 is what we're
aiming for.
That's the number to beat thisyear.
All right, that's a big number.
Oh yeah, that's a big number.
What advice do you guys give tothe freshmen now?
So you just went through it.
I guess you came in here as afreshman and those seniors kind
of helped mold you to who youare.
How are you doing that for now, this year's freshmen?
Speaker 8 (11:05):
We've got a pretty
young team.
We lost a lot of guys last yearso we brought up a lot of
younger guys and it's kind ofjust explaining to them that we
didn't really bring them up tohave a stellar season and be
that guy.
It's bringing them up and we'regetting them ready for their
year next year when they have tostep up and we've got a lot of
young guys stepping up this yearthat having to play positions
they probably shouldn't be inbut I mean they're all working
(11:28):
hard getting to where we needthem to be and it's cool to see
all the young guys stepping upand filling that role that an
upperclassman should be taking.
So it's cool to see everybodykind of work together and I mean
there's mistakes made becauseyounger kids and stuff happens,
but everybody's willing to workhard and work through it and
Coach has done a great job, kindof like acclimating these
(11:49):
younger guys into their rolesand I think they're doing a
great job filling them.
It's just keeping them positiveand not really letting them get
into their heads.
Speaker 11 (11:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (11:59):
That's a big part of
it.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
What kind of advice
do you guys give to these young
bucks?
Speaker 8 (12:06):
A lot of it's like
simple stuff, like stick skills
and stuff.
That's just stuff you do athome hitting the wall after
practice.
You have a bad practice.
Try not to get on them too hard, but just encouraging words go
hit the wall or you've got toput the work in after it.
It's just kind of encouragingthem to go out on their own and
figure it out on their own.
Not everything just happens atpractice.
Speaker 7 (12:25):
I'd probably tell
them when they go out there to
just play and not think, becausethat's usually what I take it
Like I go and it's worked forthe past four years.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
It's worked pretty
well for you.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I say, just like,
take it all in, just play day by
day, because like they're goingto wake up tomorrow and they're
going to be a senior.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
That's true.
Have a time with it, yeah, justhave fun, yeah.
Speaker 8 (12:50):
So as we approach
senior, night, which is not when
is senior night two weeks, twoweeks.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
So it's not.
That's not right around thecorner, but it's pretty close.
Like what kind of emotions doyou feel this will be?
You've went through seniornight at football, yeah.
So now you're going through it.
This is the last one you'regoing to go through yeah, I mean
it's really crazy to thinkabout honestly.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
A lot of emotions
it's gonna be crazy, be crazy.
Speaker 7 (13:06):
A lot of emotions
because I mean we're like at
this point we're pretty muchdone.
Speaker 12 (13:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
And it feels like
yesterday we were just freshmen
like coming in here.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
And now you've got
yeah, a month left, yeah,
Everybody says it don't let itpass you by.
Speaker 8 (13:17):
But I mean I'm sure
all of us here can relate.
I mean that it's done, it'salmost done.
It's pretty crazy to thinkabout and I know it's kind of
corny, but everybody says it.
It does pass by so fast, sofast four years, and when you
can still remember vivid playsor moments from almost four
(13:40):
years ago, it's pretty cool tothink about and it's special to
be a part of.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
So yeah, yeah,
alright, you gotta give me some
of those memories, give me someof your favorite moments from
here at south river.
Speaker 7 (13:51):
They can be wild one
of them's definitely have to be
last year, when we beat savernapark anytime you beat saverna
park.
That was probably one of thetop memories I've had here yeah,
that's a great memory.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Uh, I'm gonna think
about a funny memory when I got
pulled up, um, first practice.
I got pulled up, I forgot whowas dodging, but Leon Tang was
guarding him and he just fellover the net.
The net came down with him andI was just crying, laughing.
It was the funniest.
Actually, in another run lastyear, nick Sweeney came from
Gonzaga first day of practice.
Trevor was going to get goingat him and then, like he did,
(14:23):
like a split roll, nick fellover the goal and then coach
Campbell was just like welcometo public school.
Speaker 8 (14:28):
It was kind of a cool
moment At Nick Sweeney.
Yeah, it was a really coolmoment, to be honest, probably
forgetting my helmet.
Speaker 7 (14:36):
Oh, that was probably
one of the funniest moments we
played Broadneck right after wegot pulled up Wait you showed up
at Broadneck.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
You were out going
out to play and you don't have a
helmet.
Regional championship.
Speaker 8 (14:47):
There was a little
mistake in the locker room.
My helmet was grabbed.
I didn't grab someone else'shelmet and, yeah, my dad brought
it to me before the game, though.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
So you did get it
yeah.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
I did get it All
right.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
I mean, for it being
my first year, I definitely
think the bus rides are prettyfun.
My favorite moment so farthere's probably only this game
on Tuesday, or what was thatWednesday this past week?
Yeah, we played North County.
North County was Friday.
Who did we play northeast thisyear?
Speaker 7 (15:22):
Mount.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Hebron.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
No yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
When he took that
shot.
Anyways, I took a bad shot.
Speaker 8 (15:29):
Yeah, it was pretty
funny.
It was like 20 yards over thegoal.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Just 20 yards over
yeah.
Speaker 8 (15:33):
Sorry, a little more.
He was aiming for 214.
Speaker 7 (15:36):
I'd say the team
dinners are also some great
memories too.
Those are always really fun.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
I hear that from
every sport Team dinners are
kind of where it's at.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Team dinners in
Beverly Beach.
We all get together, boys andgirls across and a bunch of
other sports.
We go down to Beverly andthere's a nice beach down there.
Everybody hangs out when it'ssunny out.
We usually do it during thespring when it starts getting
nice.
Everybody's been all cooped upall winter.
We go out to the beach and havea good time.
We bring spike ball and stufflike that.
(16:09):
That is cool, it's great to getall the out there.
Yeah, how about your coaches?
How have your?
Uh, what kind of impact is yourcoaches had on you?
Uh, the coaches do a great jobhere.
Um, massinio, he's really funny.
He's kind of the the guy you.
He definitely can get strict, which we all know, um, but he's
got a good sense of humor.
He's.
He's always he.
He spends a lot of time likethinking about us in the
offseason, whether it's talkingabout plays and stuff with other
(16:32):
coaches and some of the formercoaches.
He reaches out to them so heputs in a lot of work with that.
He's also a local guy, sothere's some common activities
to do around here, so he'salways talking about that.
Coach Campbell's been great forfour years.
He believed in all of us.
He gave us all great words.
Freshman year gave us a lot ofinspiration and he's definitely
(16:55):
helped drive us to be who we arenow.
Speaker 7 (16:58):
I'd say Coach
Campbell's definitely not afraid
to break you down, but he willbuild you up eventually.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
That's good.
Speaker 7 (17:04):
And he always does
mean well, but he's definitely
not afraid to yell at you.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
That's pretty rough
sometimes too.
Um, we all love him, though.
You all love him now and, andand he's he's gonna guide you
hopefully to a uh, some, somebig wins this year it's tough
love tough love.
For sure, for sure.
What's about?
What are you gonna miss mostabout your teammates?
Speaker 5 (17:26):
just being with each
other the boys I'm playing with
right now.
Probably some of my bestfriends Played four years
together.
Speaker 8 (17:33):
Going to college next
year, still see each other in
the summers, but it just won'tbe the same Won't be the same,
everybody's going to go out.
I mean, I really don't hang outwith too many more people than
the guys on our team and acouple of the other sports teams
, but we're a pretty tight group.
We do a lot together vacations, hanging out all summer, we're
on the boats all around here andI don't know.
(17:54):
We just kind of do everythingtogether.
It just kind of happens.
It's been like that for fouryears now.
Yeah, all right.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
So what's next for
you guys?
College, where are we going?
Speaker 7 (18:04):
I'm going to towson
to continue playing there.
You go to owson, salisbury, toplay too.
I'm going to salis.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
I'm going to Towson
to continue playing there you go
Towson Salisbury to play to.
Speaker 8 (18:10):
I'm going to.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Salisbury, I'm going
to the community college.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
There you go.
Hey, that's good stuff, Allright.
So what do you want people toremember about this class?
What are we going to rememberabout these guys?
We're going to look back and go.
The graduating class of 2025lacrosse team just as the bell
rings.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
That's a good one
that we were state champs yeah,
that is a good one also that wewere state champs.
This will be the year.
This is good.
Is this gonna be it?
Speaker 1 (18:35):
can we win two state
championships in two different
seasons?
Speaker 5 (18:38):
basketball girls,
basketball boys, lacrosse I say,
if it's the year, this is ayear this is it.
Speaker 8 (18:43):
Yeah, this is it oh
god, I hope you guys do class.
Yeah, we don't have too manyjuniors on the team.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
No, we have a couple.
This is it I mean next year thesenior class.
Speaker 8 (18:53):
It's not looking too
big.
So this year's the year we'repretty strong on offense Defense
is strong.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
We've got a good
goalie and a good foe go.
Speaker 8 (19:06):
It's been like that
for 10 years.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
All right, let's go
beat Suburban Apart.
Speaker 10 (19:10):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
I can't say I hate
Suburban Apart, but I don't like
Suburban Apart.
We all do, all right.
One final message.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
You can say anything
you want to say.
I just think it's you know, just the rest of your life.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
Yeah, like I said
earlier, take it day by day,
just have fun with it.
Speaker 8 (19:29):
Talk about not being
scared to come and try out.
I mean, it's your first yearplaying.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
I mean it was a lot
of back and forth like 50-50,
whether I wanted to play or not.
But I do really think it was agood decision choosing to come
play.
Met up with a pretty cool groupof guys, so pretty happy.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
Yeah, up with a
pretty cool group of guys, so
pretty happy.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
Yeah, I'd also say
just don't take anything for
granted, all right.
Well, listen to your own advice.
Don't take anything for granted.
Every game is gonna be a toughone.
Yeah, I want a statechampionship.
All right, guys thank you thankyou
Speaker 14 (20:00):
all right, all right
um.
Andrew patterson, number nineplay midfield.
Speaker 12 (20:06):
Jacob Dillon.
Speaker 13 (20:06):
defense number four
Will McCormick, number three I
play close defense Sam Sollersnumber six I'm a D-middy.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Nice.
All right guys.
What's it mean to be playinghere South River lacrosse?
Have you guys all played allfour years?
Speaker 5 (20:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
All four years.
What's it mean?
Speaker 12 (20:24):
It's just a
brotherhood.
After the first year, likeafter playing with each other
for so long, you just create abond with everybody and it's
hard to break that, especiallywith like all of us have played
together, like half of us haveplayed together since youth.
You just already have thatfriendship and the friendship
just goes on.
It's just like everyone's closewith each other.
It's not like you're trying tocompete out with each other
(20:46):
which you are but you're justall friends at the end of it.
Speaker 13 (20:49):
Yeah, you're a team.
Speaker 14 (20:51):
Every day.
You're hanging with your boys, you're eating, you're practicing
together, do team dinnerstogether, so you just really get
a close bond.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
The alumni is pretty
cool.
Walking around Edgewater peopleare recognizing you, saying
what's up, when's the next game?
It's cool to have everybodyaround.
Speaker 13 (21:10):
I think also the
bond with the younger guys and
the older guys is good too, because I remember, I have
memories from seniors when I wasyounger and now I like making
the freshmen have fun too.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Yeah, so what's some
of the biggest lessons?
That's kind of shaped who youguys are being part of lacrosse.
Speaker 13 (21:22):
Don't miss spring
break.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
That definitely gets
me you haven't had spring break
in four years, have you oh?
Speaker 6 (21:28):
I haven't, I've had
it every year, probably doing
everything fast.
If you're going fast, it'sharder to mess up.
Speaker 12 (21:39):
Yeah, if you're
going to make a mistake, do it
100%.
Don't second guess yourself.
Just go one way without tryingto yeah, trying to go both ways.
Speaker 14 (21:47):
Just do one thing
and we can critique it from
there, it's just yeah, if you're, and if you're, if you're going
to do something, do it right.
Don't kind of give it halfeffort, because even if you're
going full speed and you'redoing the wrong thing, it's a
lot harder for the coaches totell told us that one yesterday
how have you seen yourselfimprove over the over the four
(22:07):
years?
Speaker 13 (22:09):
I changed the whole
position, so I don't know if
that's an improvement orimprovement that's improvement
but I think I've gotten smarteron the field.
Not the best, but smarter youdefinitely get more comfortable.
Speaker 6 (22:20):
Like walking into a
game freshman or sophomore year.
You definitely feel in yourstomach a little bit more, but
as seniors now like during thenational anthem or during
warm-ups you're definitely morecomfortable in that situation
that's okay what advice you'regonna give to these young guys?
Speaker 1 (22:38):
you're talking about,
like, befriending these guys
and helping them along.
What advice do you give tothese young guys?
Speaker 13 (22:42):
you're talking about
like befriending these guys and
helping them along.
What advice do you give to them?
Um, do you have something tosay?
You have to eat right now, ohjust enjoy it like enjoy school,
I think, because, like I'm notI'm not the biggest fan of
school and like I always, never, never look super forward to
lacrosse, but I love it when I'min it, like I'm enjoying it now
yeah, once that whistle blows, all the nerves go away.
Speaker 14 (23:01):
you, you can't work
yourself up before the game too
much, cause you know that, likeyou know, once you're on the
field you just lock in and youplay.
Speaker 12 (23:07):
Yeah, I think you
have to be a little
uncomfortable, like if you'rejust comfortable going into it,
you're not doing it a hundredpercent.
Like you gotta be uncomfortableto play.
Like cause not everything'sjust given.
You gotta Not everything isjust given.
You've got to work to that.
You don't always start offwhere you want to start and
you've just got to work to it.
So, just like, don't getdiscouraged like just because
you're not starting yourfreshman year or something like
(23:29):
that.
Just like whether you're on JVvarsity.
Just like, keep working to it.
Like we have a freshman thisyear.
He's doing really good like offthat's like probably the best
thing you can do.
Just like working alone, because practice is one thing,
but you've got to work alone.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Yeah.
So how are we feeling You're inyour senior year?
We've got senior day it's stilla couple weeks away but how's
that going to feel Like?
You've seen it so many times, with all the seniors on your
team walking with their families?
Speaker 14 (24:02):
How's it going to be
?
A little bit bittersweet, butat the same time, like Jacob
said, we've kind of been playingtogether for all four years, so
I think it's kind of be alittle happy, a little sad, but
we have a strong bond, so we'regoing to get through it.
Speaker 12 (24:14):
Yeah, bittersweet's
the right term.
It's going to be hard seeingeveryone go, but you just got to
make a positive impact for theones coming up for the next year
, because that's what I lookforward to All the seniors.
Previously, they all guided meto the right direction for this
night, and that's just where Iam now, and it's perfect.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
I like that Can't say
anything better.
Speaker 13 (24:38):
That was a pretty
good answer.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
That was a great
answer.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
That was a great
answer.
All right, you got to tell mesome funny moments.
Got to have some good, specialfunny moments to share.
Speaker 6 (24:46):
Donovan Driscoll last
year it was regional semifinals
Scores his first goal invarsity, runs around, pops off
the field and throws up.
That was the highlight.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
That was the
highlight of the season.
Speaker 14 (25:00):
That was the season
right there, yeah, another
Donovan Driscoll story, you know, bombing one 20 feet over the
cage right into the woodsagainst a rundle up by 20 with
about a minute left.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
Same game, same game,
same game.
That's a heck of a game Givehim the Brody one.
Speaker 12 (25:14):
It's good, oh yeah,
brody.
Speaker 13 (25:17):
Yeah, last game,
same thing Flew, flew far.
Speaker 12 (25:20):
First shot ever for
point lacrosse.
I think it went in the uprightsfrom what I saw in the video.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
I think he just told
us about that.
He admitted to it.
God admitted.
Speaker 14 (25:28):
Yeah, he admitted to
it, I think my freshman year,
Connor Chick getting carted offin the game to go take a poop in
the fourth spot.
That was a great one because hecouldn't walk there himself.
Speaker 12 (25:47):
He had to go that
bad.
He had to go that bad.
I'm trying to think about it.
Is there anything funny at teamdinners?
There's got to be somethingfunny at the team dinners.
Senior assassin is pretty funnyduring team.
Oh yeah, oh, last year's seniorassassin there there is some
546, 546 questionable call jamescommando he.
He was trying to get one of ourteammates out, but it wasn't
after practice, so he got in alittle argument with the
teammates.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
You stuck up for your
teammates.
Yeah, coach.
Speaker 6 (26:10):
Campbell filmed a
video saying the practice ended
at 5, not 4.45 or whatever itwas.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
I like it, so he
wiped it off.
It's sticking together likethat.
Speaker 13 (26:18):
And kids were
wearing goggles under their
helmets and like floaties.
During practice it was bad.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
That's kind of fun.
All right, tell me about yourcoaches.
How have your?
Speaker 13 (26:28):
coaches helped you
improve.
I think Coach Campbell keeps usreally accountable.
I think, that's just a goodlife skill, that he's treated us
or taught us justaccountability.
Keeping myself in check.
Speaker 14 (26:39):
I mean, when you
mess up, you're definitely going
to know it, but you're alsodefinitely going to know what
you did wrong.
So I mean you can treat them aslearning experiences.
You can't take, you know, theyelling too personally, because
the guy was just trying to helpyou and then, as soon as that
whistle blows, it's like youknow next play.
Speaker 12 (26:56):
Yeah, like when you
mess up, he doesn't just like
yell at you to yell at you,he'll like explain what you're
doing wrong and it's your turnto actually like put that into
effect like what he's teachingyou, because you can't keep
making the same mistake over andover again.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Yeah, All right.
What's next for you guys?
Speaker 6 (27:17):
I'll be going to
College of Charleston for
business marketing.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Ooh.
Speaker 6 (27:21):
I'm figuring it out.
Speaker 12 (27:21):
I'm going to Flagler
for lacrosse for finance.
Speaker 14 (27:24):
Yeah, I'm most
likely going to Georgia for
mechanical engineering.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
There you go.
All right, what do you wantpeople to remember about this
senior class?
Your teammates had a veryone-word answer, but it was a
very strong one.
Speaker 10 (27:42):
What is that?
Speaker 6 (27:44):
I want to win a
championship but it was a very
strong one.
What is that?
I want to win a championship.
There it is, that is true.
There it is.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
State ship Get the
ring.
Can we do?
Speaker 14 (27:49):
it Definitely?
I think so.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
Definitely.
Speaker 12 (27:52):
All right, with no
sacrifice, what?
Speaker 14 (27:53):
day?
Is it today, march 31st?
Speaker 1 (27:54):
March 31st, you can
call it today Month and a half.
Month and a half until achampionship run.
I like it All.
Right, guys.
Anything else?
Anything, you got a live mic infront of you.
Speaker 13 (28:07):
You got something
good.
Speaker 12 (28:09):
I don't know Expect
a state championship.
Speaker 6 (28:14):
Yeah, be ready for it
.
Yeah, be ready for the statechampionship.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
All right, we're
going to be ready for it.
We're going to be watching.
Speaker 13 (28:18):
Thank you, all right
guys, thank you.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
Thank you All right
Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
All right, let's
start down here.
Give me your name, your numberand your position.
Speaker 11 (28:28):
My name's Donovan,
I'm number 40, and I play
offensive midfield.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
My name is Dakari,
I'm number one and I play
defensive midfield.
Speaker 9 (28:37):
My name's Colin, I'm
number 25, and I play defensive
midfield.
Speaker 10 (28:41):
My name's Colin, I'm
number 25, and I play defensive
midfield.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
My name's Connor,
number 33, and I'm a goalie.
All right, the goalie.
We were talking about thegoalie a little earlier.
That's great yeah.
Speaker 10 (28:53):
All right.
So what does it mean to playlacrosse here at South River?
It's always been special to mebecause I grew up watching these
games.
My dad's a head coach, so I'vebeen coming here since I was
like five years old and I'vealways had like, wanted to play
here, so like ever since.
Speaker 9 (29:10):
I started, it always
just like meant something to me.
Yeah, it's been really coolgetting to know everyone on the
team through like four years ofplaying here.
I like moved here in eighthgrade and I played one year rec
but then I didn't really knowanyone then.
To you know, four years beinghere, I just really like the
family and community that Ibuilt.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
Through my four years
of being here it was like
welcome arms, because I didn'tplay lacrosse until I got to
high school and the coach waslike really good at helping me
like learn how to play lacrosseand getting me used to
everything.
Speaker 11 (29:39):
I've only been
playing the sport for three
years.
I started my sophomoresophomore year and I started on
JV.
It was pretty fun.
And then like I'm just glad thecoaches like just helped me and
like I got introduced to thesport at like with a good
coaching squad and yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
So how do you guys
think lacrosse has helped you
through high school and hasshaped you into who you are
today?
Speaker 10 (30:07):
I don't know, but I
think it comes with like a
little bit of a little bit oflike integrity where, like hold
you accountable, like you haveto at least have a 2.0 or less
than two to stay on the team umbut yeah, I just I think it like
helps hold you accountable.
Speaker 9 (30:21):
Yeah, yeah it's
definitely gave me, like, some
motivation in school.
You know, keep my grades up and, like you know, represent the
team.
Well, you know, don't doanything bad because that
reflects poorly on the team.
Speaker 10 (30:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
It just really opened
my eyes to let me know that
like you got to like make surewhat you're doing is like not
going to come back and affectyou or your teammates.
Speaker 11 (30:41):
So you just got to
be open-minded it just made me a
better person overall because, like our coaches just always
tell you to like do the rightthing, and you know like when
you're representing south riverin your chest, just always do
like the right thing, yeah yeah, how have you, how have you seen
this team improved over theyears?
Speaker 1 (31:01):
this, this group, you
got.
Speaker 10 (31:02):
You got a big senior
class here um, I think like at
the beginning, like sophomoreyear, we were kind of like, I
don't say like divided up, butlike we weren't as close as we
are now, like like sophomoreyear up to senior year.
I think we've all kind of likeclumped together as a group.
I think it helped buildchemistry.
Speaker 9 (31:24):
Yeah for sure.
Over a couple of years, everyone getting to know each
other more and more.
It helped build team chemistry, which I think resulted in us
playing together better.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
Yeah, I just think
that a lot of them played
together when they were youngertoo, so like they already had
experience together.
Speaker 11 (31:45):
So once we all came
together and put the pieces
together, it's been working yeahI mean, you can obviously see
the chemistry and the team ifyou just watch one of our games
and, um like, yeah, it's just agreat group of guys what advice
do you give the young guys tokind of create that chemistry?
Speaker 10 (32:03):
um, I don't know, I
like spend time like outside of
just practicing games together, like you could like hit the
field on like a random day justfor like an hour or two, um, and
definitely spend some likeother extracurricular curricular
activities together yeah, forsure.
Speaker 9 (32:21):
Like you know, just
spending time with your
teammates and bonding outside ofpractice or like outside of
school is really important.
That way, you know, you guysget to know each other.
Be better friends, you know, bethere for each other more.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
Yeah, like he said,
just bonding because I feel like
teams with stronger bonds gothe farthest.
Speaker 11 (32:40):
Yeah, and like it's
just good to be with your team
outside of practice a lotbecause it just it can translate
on the field all right.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
So your seniors we're
gonna have senior night in a
couple weeks.
Did you ever think you weregonna be here, like where you're
the guys going across the fieldwith family or friends or
whoever you're with, to becelebrating your senior year?
How's that gonna feel Idefinitely.
Speaker 10 (33:03):
I feel like it came
really fast, like watching all
the ceremonies growing up and Icouldn't wait for it and then
like freshman year came and thenlike sophomore year I was on
varsity and then watched allthose guys go through and then
kind of just felt like itskipped to now where it's like
right here on the doorstep.
Speaker 9 (33:22):
Yeah, it's definitely
surreal, like I just remember
watching, you know, the seniornight, like last year and stuff,
and it's crazy how quickly youknow it's now our time yeah for
senior night.
Speaker 4 (33:32):
I mean not really
unbelievable, but um yeah, no,
it's crazy yeah, it's crazy howfast like the time just
approached us, because, like itwas like I felt like you were
going to be in high schoolforever, and now that we're
ready to leave, it's kind of sada little bit.
Speaker 11 (33:48):
I'm with Dakari on
that.
It just all flew by.
I just remember my first timeplaying wall ball, sophomore
freshman year, and I was justthinking there's no way I'm
already senior week's already intwo weeks.
It's crazy to think about.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
So you guys got to
have some good funny stories for
him.
Yeah, he's ready for that.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
My favorite memory
was last year against Sorondo so
Donovan, he was like he went toa dodge and he shot the ball
and it was like nowhere near thegoal.
It was hilarious, it was like20 feet off it was not too long
after that he comes off thefield puking.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
I think we might have
heard that a couple times
already.
Speaker 11 (34:32):
No, I came off the
field puking after I scored.
I scored versus Arundel thesecond time.
We played them in the playoffsand then I came off the field
puking, so two different times.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Two different times.
There you go how about anythingelse.
Speaker 10 (34:47):
There's a couple
times where one of the other
seniors, jacob, he'll get broken.
He's a defenseman and he'll getmessed up.
He'll be in the wrong place andhe'll get scored on and he'll
take this walk of shame over tome and it's I don't know.
I always think it's funny.
Like, regardless of like whatthe situation is, he'll be like
(35:10):
walking with his head down, dragging his stick.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
It reminds me like a
sad puppy at least he's coming
over to you, he's acknowledgingyou.
There you go.
Um, how about your coaches?
What kind of impact is yourcoach's?
Your coach is your dad, sothat's kind of interesting.
Speaker 10 (35:27):
I mean, I've had dad
as my coach since I was four
years old and he's been with meall the way through high school,
so it's nothing really new tome, but he's always someone I
can fall back on and someone whoI look up to as well for advice
or just something to yeah, coach Campbell's been great.
Speaker 9 (35:49):
Through the few years
on varsity that I've had with
him he's really helped me in mylacrosse journey and, just to
prove, as a player, he knows mystrengths and weaknesses and he
tries to help me build on that.
And he knows my strengths andweaknesses and he tries to help
me build on that.
He tells me I'm coachable so Ican fix what I do wrong.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
So I really
appreciate that.
I really appreciate Mr Campbelltoo.
He's one of the main reasonsI've played lacrosse, because he
gave me an opportunity freshmanyear and it was just fun being
around him and the rest of theteam, so I enjoyed it.
I just stayed with it.
Speaker 11 (36:26):
I mean, yeah, we
have a really good coach and
staff I mean Campbell, Vicinio, coach Kelly, coach Bear they're
all just such great coaches.
It's just again, I think, likethey can help us with our
weaknesses and tell us what weneed to get better at.
And they always tell us we'recoachable, because if we weren't
(36:48):
coachable then we wouldn't beable to grow from our mistakes.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
There you go.
What's next for you guys?
Speaker 10 (36:55):
I'm going to St
Mary's College of Maryland to
continue playing lacrosse.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
I'm probably going to
Towsonin and then I'm gonna
major in exercise science andthen hopefully become a pt I'm
probably gonna go to uh anoranocommunity college and further my
studies I'll be working in thetrades.
Speaker 1 (37:16):
My friend's dad owns
a plumbing company all right so
called perfect plumbing thereyou go run your first ad for
perfect plumbing.
All right, what do you wantpeople to remember about you
guys, this class in particular?
Speaker 10 (37:30):
yeah, last year we
beat sabrina park for the first
time in nine years that's thefirst time in nine years yeah,
since we won a statechampionship, um.
But like I think we beat them12-6, which is like, yeah,
pretty crazy that is crazyconsidering that we lost 13-5
the next time we played on yeahbut I hope that, like people,
(37:53):
kind of remember that because itwas a great game to be a part
of and maybe we have a littlebit of the championship run in
us.
Yeah, I mean, I feel good aboutthis year.
I think we have our strongsenior group to look up to and
we have a couple ofunderclassmen who are ready to
step up to the plate.
I like you guys.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
All right, last words
you can say anything, come
support.
Speaker 4 (38:17):
I love my mom, I love
my parents.
Speaker 9 (38:20):
I love my mom.
Speaker 11 (38:22):
I love my parents.
I'm appreciative of South RiverLacrosse as an organization.
Sweet.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
I like it.
