Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, welcome
back to the Hawk Nation.
I'm.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Tom Frank, I'm
Grayson Frank and I'm G McDuffie
.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
And this is Hawk Talk
and we are talking all things.
South River High School sports.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Hawk Talk is brought
to you in conjunction with the
Athletic Department at SouthRiver High School.
Merrick Creative, yourend-to-end creative agency
dedicated to amplifying brands'authenticity through branding,
marketing and public relations.
Chad's Barbecue and MarylandRemodeling Expert.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Normally, you know,
we're well underway in spring
sports.
We have not had a chance toofficially kick off with our
athletic director, David Klingel, because we had a lot going on
in the winter and I haven'ttalked to you since this.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
No, a ton it's.
You know it was.
I felt like I was neglecting myspring sports because the
winter sports were doing so well.
Yeah, but that's a good problemto have and they'll have their
time coming up in April and Mayto shine themselves.
But we had a great winterseason, obviously, and a lot to
celebrate and a lot to look backand just you know, the memories
(00:59):
are awesome, yeah.
And I need to say this to you onbehalf of all Seahawks
Brilliant idea to load up fivebuses full of kids and bring
them to that game.
I think it just made a hugeimpact.
(01:20):
Actually, probably about 14years I worked in a media room
and I I knew a lot of stuff totell them as far as what to
expect.
Uh, just like little thingsthat you don't like.
We prepared by going, likereading the starting lineup in
here, showing them how to lineup all that kind of stuff,
things that you, you don't wantto be overwhelmed about and
(01:42):
thinking about when you go there, because it's uh, it's an
overwhelming place to go intothe first time.
But then to, uh, I was back inthe tunnel with them and then,
when they can look up, and theyactually saw the group of
students like in the uh up inthe upper section before they
can come down in the game beforeit was uh, it was a cool
feeling to see them, see howexcited they they were, but it
(02:04):
also gave them a little bit.
Somebody's got our back tonightand let's roll, and you know it
took them a while, but like Ithink I was listening to your
podcast while I was in Floridaand you know Zivic, a lot more
confident than I am just sayingthey're going to break, they're
going to break, they're going tobreak.
And he was right, they did.
Just saying they're going tobreak, they're going to break,
(02:25):
they're going to break.
And he was right, they did.
And you know our depth and justthe ability to roll eight
players at their five that nightwas, you know, was a difference
.
Yeah, it was a lot, plus all thekids in the stands, it was more
than it was eight eight plusall the all the girls that were,
you know, on the team and then, you know, then we had probably
about you know, a thousandpeople in the stands that were,
you know, had their backs aswell.
(02:45):
So it was a good, great night, great for the school.
And obviously, you know, winning, you know you never want
to go to that game and loseyeah, because you never know
when you're going to get back.
And you always got to win thatone, yeah, and we've been pretty
successful in win and you knowthey did it that night, which
(03:06):
was awesome.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
So we're going to
have a big banner go up.
When's the banner go up?
Speaker 4 (03:09):
So we're going to,
you know, we're going to put it
up.
I think we're looking at nextyear's schedule because I want
to do it when the girls are likefrom college, because all of
them I mean we had nine seniorswe have a home game December
18th, I believe, which a lot ofthem will be home, uh and uh,
you know, we'll try to do itthat night where we kind of
unveiled the banner, introducedthem.
(03:30):
Uh, we're going to honor themat the lacrosse game this Friday
night.
Uh, at halftime of the boysgame, uh against Broadneck.
Uh, I always like to do thoseagainst Broadneck and Smyrna
Park to uh make sure they knowthat we won a state championship
.
But you know it's greatcompetition in the county.
But from them provides, youknow, great, you know, the
(03:51):
ability to perform undercircumstances like we did.
So iron sharpens iron andthat's how we kind of view our
opponents.
I like that.
It's December 18th, but we'llhonor them this week at the
lacrosse game.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
On this.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Friday night, this
Friday night, yep, big one
against Broadneck.
Yeah, we got to beat Broadneck.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Always Got to, always
All right.
So we're going to dive in onspring sports, although I do
want to add another thing.
The new website is up.
It is Very impressive.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, I had nothing
to do with it.
It's uh just getting used tosome of the new things with it,
but uh I like the calendar.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Everything's
everything looks good, so it
looks good, have you guys seenthe new website.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I have a little idea.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
I have not all right,
they're not the best co-hosts
in the world for nothing.
Right there, we're gonna gothrough all of our teams, gotcha
.
Feel free to add in somecommentary.
You guys have some insideperspective on some of these
teams.
Where do you want to start?
Speaker 4 (04:41):
I'll let you choose
geez we can start with.
We'll start with my favoritesport.
Do you guys know what that is?
Baseball?
Baseball.
It's just got back from a nicefive-day trip to Florida to
watch my Phillies.
I got the computer here tellingme what they're doing right now
.
Not many people know they play162 in baseball and part of my
(05:05):
goal is to watch at least partof each one of those 162.
Because you know, what I loveabout baseball is it's every day
and it's you know, you got tobe consistent and that's the you
know reason I played, I lovebaseball, I played baseball and
that was my favorite sport.
So, talking about the Seahawks,I think we're 3-1 now, 3-1.
(05:26):
3-1.
We had a nice extra inning winlast week against Southern, or
Harwood as Coach Hall likes tocall them, harwood, and you know
we were.
I mean kind of a story aboutthe early spring.
We've been sick like as far aslike illness, with our teams
Whole as far as illness with ourteams.
Whole school, really Wholeschool.
Yeah, it's been going aroundand baseball was.
(05:47):
You know.
I know we were down a couplestarters the other day.
I know Lutterby was out atsecond base, you know Jonah
filled in at third and we have afreshman, gavin Kuntz.
That's stepped up big time.
Now, you know I don't like to,you know, give freshmen.
You give freshmen too manyprops, but that kid's going to
(06:07):
be a player.
Just watching him play, hismannerisms, his ability to move
around.
Then his older brother, prestonon the Hill, started that game
for us.
We've got a good group.
Coach Harris does a great jobwith them.
Nolan Hooker, starting shortstop, got some good news.
He had an elbow issue in theoffseason.
I think all the tests have comeback where he's healthy.
(06:30):
And just to have him in thelineup he usually pitched for us
, but just to have him in thelineup, the ability to play
shortstop for us, it opens up alot of things for Coach Harris
and his ability to move aroundthe lineup and Nolan can hit.
And Deshaun Branch leading off.
He pulled his hammy the otherday running the first late in
the game but hopefully he's okaybecause that guy can hit.
So yeah, we're going to beright in it.
(06:52):
Give teams the run for theirmoney, and the thing about
baseball in our county is thatwe have a lot of good teams in
our region with Decatur and JMBennett.
There are no easy days for us,so you know they'll be right in
it, though I think that thisgroup's got a lot of promise and
potential.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
And we got Meade
today at home.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Hopefully.
Yeah, we're dodging lightningand hopefully rain and you know,
hopefully we get it in by.
You know, get it in by 7o'clock tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
And then we're on the
road versus North County on
Wednesday and then back homeagainst a Rundle.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Rundle big one on
Friday.
They get to play a Joe Cannonon the turf on Wednesday night
against North County.
You know, yeah, they're, youknow baseball.
What I love about baseball, too, is like we lost a tough one to
Northeast on Tuesday last week, but you get to come back right
into the next day, right and youknow, and, for instance, like
(07:46):
chesapeake lost to us, they comeback the next day.
Baseball is a game where andyou watch a lot of it that the
best team doesn't always win.
It's the team that has the bestday over the course of the the
season, the better teams but,you can get beat by the worst
team.
Uh, that that can't happen in alot of sports.
It's based on pitching.
(08:06):
You know being fundamentallysound and you know doing all
those good things.
It's a thinking man's game andI'm not a thinking man, but
that's why I love it.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
So that's our
baseball team right there.
Well, we got to talk aboutsoftball.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Softball again.
Softball is one of my favoritesports to watch here.
It's a quick pace.
I like our team a lot.
I want they beat chesapeakelast.
Uh, last, uh, I think it waswednesday three to two.
Um got a good group of seniorsuh.
Katherine lippincott, cj harris.
Uh, hannah grambo.
Uh, cj and hannah have been onthe varsity for four years.
Uh, they were part of theregion championship team four
(08:44):
years ago.
And then they've got a goodgroup of young kids Avery Ford
behind the plate, addy Binkopitching Avery, I'm sorry.
Ava Zimmerman playing firstbase, callum Morano at short.
And then they got threefreshmen that are going to help
(09:05):
them out right now.
Kendall Killman will see sometime at third, I believe, and
then the two corner outfielders, jalen Elliott and then Sloane
Kelly, whose sister playsvolleyball for us.
She's going to be another goodone.
Like I said, freshmen They'vegot some good young freshmen.
And that's a good problem tohave right, because you got them
for four years and they'regoing to be a problem for other
(09:26):
teams for four years.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
And they started off
at 3-2.
3-2.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
And then they should
win today against Meade North
County and then Arundel onFriday at home will be a big one
for them.
That's usually a tough game andI think we're ready for it.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
All right.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Where do you want to
do boys or?
Speaker 1 (09:47):
girls.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Let's start with the
girls okay, girls, they're three
and, oh, right now, undefeated.
Uh, you know, they were in aweird spot early in the season
because, uh, three of theirplayers, uh, played basketball,
oh so, and they were practicingup until saint patrick's day,
which was the first day theycame out.
They couldn't do seven on sevenbecause they didn't have enough
players.
So, yeah, it made it a toughkind of coaching transition, but
(10:11):
I also think that is going tohelp them in the long run,
because the three people theygot Adela, who's going to
Campbell, claire, who's going toHigh Point, and then they
picked up Reagan Ogle, who'splaying for the first time in
high school that can only makethem stronger.
And then the girls that wereplaying the first, you know, two
(10:31):
weeks of the season they got tobe dependent on more than they
might've would, maybe, wouldhave if those girls were around,
uh, watching them.
Last week they beat MountHebron for the first time, uh, I
think at three or four yearswe've lost to them by one goal.
Uh, for the first time, I think, in three or four years, we've
lost to them by one goal threeyears in a row, and then we beat
them by one goal in overtime.
And what was satisfying aboutthat is and, like I said, reagan
(10:54):
hasn't played a lot of lacrosse.
You know she hadn't played forall four years.
And the first practice, youknow, annie came to me and was
like I don't know where I'mgoing to put her and I just said
to her I was like you'll find aplace, yeah.
You know she's an athlete, you'll find a place.
You know, first, scrimmage, you've struggled a little bit, I
mean, obviously they haven'tplayed in a while.
And then I looked out thatnight and she's out there
(11:16):
playing at the top of their zonedefense, just giving the
division one players on theother team a hard time, and then
she takes two charges, picks upa ground ball.
I mean, just does what she didin basketball in that respect.
And then, and then AnnabellaBurke, who's, you know, I don't
think gets as enough credit asshe she deserves she is, she is
(11:38):
a goal scorer, left-handed, andshe put one away in overtime and
uh, you know she's, she's goingto be one of our better players
this year.
And yeah, she's going toChristopher Newport to play, uh,
next next year.
So I you know, I think thatwith the seniors I think you had
Kelly Weber, savannah Stallings, kaylee Stewart, and then they
got a good goalie as well RileyKane, who is a sophomore and
(12:03):
very calm, cool and collectedback there and holds it down
pretty well for us.
Do you think they?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
can make a run here.
They can.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Yeah, I mean Sprinter
Park's tough.
I mean we're not going to lieto ourselves.
If we're playing them today, they're favored right.
But I was surprised how fast wewere last week when we played.
I was impressed with our teamspeed.
Some of the other kids LieslWeiss, played a great defensive
(12:29):
game that day, lauren Reedy, youknow, and I'll fail to mention
everybody, but you know I wasimpressed by our team speed.
I think you know, as long asyou know, it's going to take a
great game to beat a team likeSaverna Park, beat a team like
Broadneck.
But I think that these girlshave it in them.
They have a bunch of winnersand when you have winners you
have a chance.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Yeah, so and we got
to move on to the boys.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
Yep, I mean, I just
heard you talking to them and
they're uh, yeah, we had all theboys in here that that episode
will come out next week, okay, but we had all the seniors on
and uh, good, good group of guys, they are a group of seniors.
Uh, you know the um I was.
And you talk about having achance when you have the best
player on the field, you alwayshave a chance, and phipps is the
best player on the fieldwhenever we go on the field.
(13:14):
So I, you know, I always, I,you, you know Trevor's a goal
scorer, you know.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
And then we have-
Couldn't believe the amount of
goals that he said.
He had his freshman, sophomore, junior and then the senior year
he's going to get.
He's got to get 60.
He has to get 60.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
And we got Patterson
in the face-off X and Marcion
scoring goals.
And then again you have to havea goalie on the cross and we
got one and you know Connor andand blue behind him, they, they
might be two of the best goaliesin the County.
Connor Connor has been astellar standout for three years
and you know, I mean, you got aguy that can stop the ball.
(13:49):
You got a chance and we have, like I said, you got the best
player on the field, you got achance.
And I really think that theseguys just listen to them.
They're, they're good group,tight group, and I'm looking
forward tomorrow night be thefirst time I see him in person
this year against marriott'sridge and then obviously on
friday against broadneck.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
It's a big one for us
yeah, four now to start the
season.
Now, what do you guys think ofthis lacrosse team?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
uh, sky, keep winning
.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Gotta, gotta kill
broadneck friday yeah, no, it's
a good group of kids.
I mean, a lot of them have beenon varsity for years now.
So, especially like he wassaying, you got Trevor Phipps
best player in Maryland, in myopinion you got Ben facilitating
, you got Andrew Pattersonwinning every faceoff, you got a
great goalie.
I mean we can go as far as wewant, as long as we stay
together, and clearly they're agood group, and so I feel like
(14:33):
we had a really good shot thisyear.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Yeah, talk about
winners too.
Ben Adams is a winner and youwatch him play football.
You watch him.
He is 100% go all the time andhe's going to have a great
career at Salisbury when heplays at the next level.
But he's like a glue guy thatjust holds our team together and
(14:57):
, like I said, winners, thereare a bunch of winners and you
know when, when you got thosetypes of guys with that attitude
, it, you know, I think thingsturn.
You tilt your way towards theend of the season.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
Yeah, all right,
let's move on to.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
we got we got tennis
with track first.
All right, tried, a lot ofpeople came out for track, right
, it's like our whole school.
I think it was like eightpercent of our school tried out
for track this year.
Um, which which just makes itgreat because I know coach uh
fountain makes it a welcomingexperience.
Uh, I know my daughter runs andshe's not a runner but she
(15:30):
loves being around.
It keeps I think it keeps a lotof kids in some shape for their
other sports that they play, butalso opens the door to them to,
uh, you know, see that maybethis is something that I can do.
Uh, I know, I know that therewas a couple of field hockey
girls that did that, uh, duringthe uh, during the winter, and a
couple of them it reallyexcelled Uh.
And then you have, you know, your, your your mainstays, like
(15:54):
Owen Infante, charlotte Bunting, colleen Cresswell, shannon
Cresswell.
Those kids are that's theirmain sport and you can tell
right, they excel at it and youknow they go like Charlotte's
going to Towson and then Owen'sjust signed with Trinity.
So their opportunities at thenext level are right there in
(16:18):
front of them and I, you knowit's a great group of people,
great group of coaches and uh,you know it's hard.
It's a hard one to talk aboutas far as team results and stuff
, because everybody's in theirindividual, uh, individual
aspect of it but uh, but youknow when they do compete as a
team right.
Yeah, they do, and they do a lotof invitationals and you know
(16:43):
it's tough to keep track of teamwise.
It's one of those sports thatyou know is at the end of the
year it's more team orientedthan it is during the year.
But you know they're going to,they're going to compete and I
think we'll have a great season.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
You guys didn't want
to go run or throw a shot put or
something.
Coach all made us run.
Enough in basketball season.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Sound good on that
fair enough, all right, and then
we got, we got tennis, tennis, that we're three and oh, yeah,
yeah, we, I mean in our coaches,uh, leanne and leslie, they
always they do a great job withour kids.
Um, it's a great experience.
They, they're always having fun, um, they're, they're in,
they're in a spot too wherethey're going to.
Uh, we have a number one girl, taya, that is, she's great.
Uh, she's going to compete atthe at the County level, state
(17:29):
level.
Uh, you know, what's great isthat you have a mixed doubles
teams and doubles teams where,if you go to one and I highly
recommend that you do you justsee the pulling for each other,
and I feel like they have agreat chance.
Obviously, like every othersport, smyrna Park and Broadneck
(17:51):
, crofton are all up there, butthey have a chance to compete at
the county and state level thisyear with the best of them, and
I expect Leslie and Leanne toget the best out of our team.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
So, according to my
calculations here, you take
softball and baseball out of thepicture and we're undefeated.
Yeah, yeah we got some sportshere.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
We do, and baseball
and softball.
Like I said, you play so manygames Going undefeated.
It's unlikely you go to a statechampionship game in baseball.
Usually that team has four orfive losses throughout the year
and it's just a matter ofcatching fire at the right time
in those sports and hopefully wecan do that in May.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
And then I always
like to mention bocce, which is
a fun thing.
Great, thing, I went out last.
Mention Bocce, which is, whichis a fun thing, great thing.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
I went out last I
think it was uh last Wednesday
or last Thursday and I actuallypracticed with them, rolled,
rolled the ball around with thema little bit.
Uh, it's just a great group ofkids.
Um, they that we have our.
What's cool is their first tosenior night and they're going
(18:59):
to be having their match out bydown by the flagpole.
The girls jv lacrosse is goingto be playing at the same time
and then senior it will rollright to senior night.
So we'll get uh, those, they'llget the opportunity to hear the
music play and all that kind ofstuff.
Um, mr goodwin is coaching theteam and it's a perfect, uh,
perfect, you know, arrangementfor him and and he loves it.
And I, I know I was with Wiley, one of our, uh, one of our
(19:19):
athletes the other day.
And Mr Goodwin, he has aEnglish accent, he's like boy,
he's funny, you know, and andthat that's you know, that's all
that's what it's for, you know, and, and I think you know, we
don't, we're not based onresults here.
Some schools base themselves onresults in bocce and unified
bowling and tennis.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
We, we are not we're
just having a good time we're
having a good time.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
If we win, great.
If we lose, that's fine.
Uh, we just want to have ourkids have a great experience
outstanding.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
So that's our spring
sports.
Now I got to get into somethinghere.
We're in.
We're in ncaa season right now.
We got lots of basketball.
We had a little contest lastweek with coach civic.
I do have the results for allthose who are wondering.
So let me run down the resultsvery quickly.
I'll be honest with you.
I was in last place.
I had 19 points and I'm done.
I'm done.
(20:05):
Coach Zivic had 21 points, butstill has Houston.
But I can tell you right nowhe's not going to catch our
winner.
In third place, jaden came upwith 39 points and is done.
And in first place you took itby one point 44.
Done, one point, bro, old mess.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
I think was the team.
You will see Sean Pabuela, he'sthe man he is, the man Never
put my trust in you, Ash.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
what are we talking
about today, fellas?
I want to talk about thesematchups.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
These were some great
games over the weekend.
Walter Clayton Jr from Florida.
He's got some ice in his veins.
He is clutch, he's a dog.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Definitely has a
little Steph Curry in him.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Yes, he does.
So what are we thinking here?
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Final four I mean, I
think we can all agree the
clear-cut favorite is Duke.
I mean, they're incredible.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
I think Duke and
Florida are on a collision
course, philly.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
Duke, like turnover
issues, can't make a shot and
they still win by 20 for Alabama.
It's ridiculous, it's stupid,it's insane.
They have four or five stars ontheir bench.
Coach is great.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
They got flag.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
They got flag.
I mean, they have Isaiah Evanscoming off the bench, which is
insane.
Somehow I don't see anybodyeven.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
So we're saying
clear-cut winner over Houston is
Duke.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
I will say, houston's
defense does impress me a lot.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
Yeah, they held their
opponents an average of 51.2
points per game this year out ofall the games, so I feel like I
mean that was the lowest in thewhole tournament.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Now wait a minute.
Are we going to give anyseniority love to Houston?
Houston has a coach who won hisfirst NCAA game before the Duke
coach was even born.
Speaker 4 (21:42):
I think that's right,
Cooper flag man, houston's
defense is tough, but I thinkDuke's defense.
That's the reason they've madeit this far.
They usually bow out a littleearlier because they're all
about the three ball, notplaying defense, and they can
lock you down.
The one big player I like, guyGillis from Purdue that
transferred to Duke.
(22:03):
Big player I like gillis frompurdue that that transferred to
duke.
Uh, I think he gives them alittle bit of uh like leadership
and you know they're not justbased on the freshmen.
Uh, yeah, I like.
I don't like duke, but I likethe way they play.
Speaker 5 (22:15):
They play tough I
think, yeah, I think.
Also, I see a lot of comparisonto the team with zion
williamson, rj barrett, uh, camreddish.
With those guys, though, it'skind of like there's three of
them, of course, and they werestacked.
They were phenomenal.
Zion was phenomenal, they weregreat, but when Cam Reddish was
off, they really couldn't shootthe three ball.
I feel like you got ConnKnipple, isaiah Evans coming off
(22:36):
the bench, tyrese Proctor is onthe roll.
So it's kind of just like ifCooper's not on, then he's on
and then he's on.
It's like a five-headed goat.
You can't chop off all theheads, man.
It's like it's impossible.
Honestly, it's impossible toguard them.
So if you're playing them, you're going to need to be
hitting all your shots andyou're going to play.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
We haven't talked
about.
I know your your personalfavorite Sorry if he's less
saying, I don't know how topronounce his name Johnny broom.
I know you're a big fan of him.
I am a big fan, but I mean, towards the end of that game you
could see a little issue withhis arm.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
And he plays for
Auburn's going to beat Florida.
Speaker 5 (23:21):
I mean, they're old,
one dude's, real old, so he
should have his experience.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
I like old teams.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
I like Tahad too.
I have Auburn going to thefinals with Duke, but Tahad's
really good.
I like Tahad off the bench.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
So we're split here
Auburn and Florida.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
I like Florida, but
Florida, florida.
Auburn.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
Auburn.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
And then are we all
taking Duke, is that it?
Speaker 5 (23:43):
Duke's just going to
win it.
Duke's going to win it.
I can't, we can't all take Duke.
I'm sorry, it's just impossible.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
I want to say Auburn,
but I don't think I can do it.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
I hate taking the
favorite, but it's just obvious.
If they lose I'll be so shockedI'll put my whole, so all of
OCTOC is going with Duke.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
Yeah, slam the door.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
That's it, folks.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Well, I mean speaking
of favorites.
This is the second time everfor whoever didn't know, all one
seeds have made the Final Four.
The only time that ever hashappened is in 2008.
The Phillies won the WorldSeries in 2008.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
So now we're bringing
it back to base amount, ain't?
Speaker 5 (24:23):
somebody's back Yep,
that's a crazy stat.
That's a crazy stat, yep.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
That is a crazy stat.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
The big thing, I
think that on this tournament
too, is the lack of upsets, andI think that NIL has played a
big part of that.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Ah, don't get me
started on this now.
Speaker 4 (24:37):
We can get into this
right now, like you got Jacoby
gillespie uh, you know who's agreat player for maryland
already transferred, but he's,you know, like he's already.
He was where was he?
At belmont last year, andbelmont used to be the team that
beat the the the 13th.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
They used to be on
the 14th you heard a lot of
belmont players on other teamsin the tournament and that's why
a team like belmont is notgonna not gonna exist anymore
yep, and that's.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
That's the.
That's the problem with the NIL.
As far as tournament goes, Ithink you know you saw like this
weekend it was one versus two,one versus two, one versus two,
one versus three, very boring, and you know, hopefully it
creates the games yesterdayweren't great, but you know,
hopefully it creates good FinalFour games, but it's just
disappointing in our earlyrounds.
(25:23):
You want to see upsets yeah, atleast a couple, but we didn't
see that.
Speaker 5 (25:27):
Yeah, I feel like the
nil stuff is just like it's
wild, because I've heard aboutsome of it with the college and
recruiting and stuff.
Yeah, I was talking to this onecoach and he was at sam houston
for football.
Yeah, um, he had players on histeam, he wanted to keep and
they stayed for a year, but atsome point there's a million
dollars thrown in their face andthese weren't like first round
picks.
(25:47):
He's just guys, how do you turnit down?
How you turn out a milliondollars with an 18 year old, 19
year old kid.
So it's hard, it's definitelyhard for them.
I feel like this money's kindof taking over the game.
It's kind of high school'sbecoming college.
College is becoming theprofessionals and professionals
is becoming its own brand newthing.
So it's, it's a lot.
It's definitely a lot.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
One thing I hate
about the N I hate, I despise it
is um.
I mean we have three NittanyLions fans here, so we know
Pabuela left before the seasoneven ended.
Same with Pippen's kid withMichigan.
I mean leaving before, beforeyou still had a chance to win it
all, and you're you're enteringthe portal yeah, that was uh
ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Creating chaos, yeah,
definitely disappointment when
you know it creates a me culture.
Uh, and that's that's a toughpart about it is that you know
you're trying to build stuff, but you know you can't blame the
kids either, because it's justa system that they're you know
the system that they're givenand when somebody is is waving
that money in your face thatyou've never seen it's life
(26:45):
changing money.
Yeah, and uh, you know yougotta sometimes you gotta do
what you gotta do in that case.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Sure, would be nice
to be a senior or junior is a
pretty good basketball orfootball player, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
And the other.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
Thing is the other
part I don't like about it is
it's.
It's.
It's really hurting high schoolathletes.
Uh, you know, if you're good, you're gonna like, if you're one
of the top kids and but likeyou're gonna get, you're gonna
get the love.
You're gonna get what youalways got when the recruiting
aspect of it, plus the money.
But it creates the the abilityfor the college coach to go
(27:20):
poach from other teams that arein college already, a kid that's
been in the college weight roomversus a kid that hasn't been
yet and it's you know.
You even see it down at theDivision II level and you know
Frostburg, with Sonberg goingfrom Lafayette to Frostburg, and
you know they're looking forthose types of kids at the
Division II level as opposed topossibly looking for the next
(27:43):
high school kid, which hurtsthose guys.
Now, kids like Jaden, they'regoing to find their way because
they're good, I mean, and thatthat coaches want them.
Kids that are, you know, likeyour borderline kid they might
have trouble yeah.
Speaker 5 (27:58):
So the the portal,
definitely it's kind of it's.
It's just a trickle effect nowbecause you got kids like that
could come out of high schooland maybe get developed and play
division one basketball, butnow they're getting pushed on
the d2, d3.
So once now they turn intojuniors and seniors, now they're
the ones getting pushed into d1and it's a reset for the kids
in high school that are on thecrisp too.
So it kind of just keepstrickling.
It should keep getting worseand worse and worse.
(28:18):
And I'll start into this onecoach and they look at maybe
five for basketball, make it.
They look at maybe like twokids for scholarship max a year.
Just even look at and they gostraight.
Some just go straight to theportal like they don't even look
at high school anymore, whichis crazy.
But I mean the coaches gettingpaid to win now and if their
jobs are on the line, they gotone now.
So of course they're gonnathrow money at these 23 year
olds that have had the collegeexperience, like he said, weight
(28:41):
room, the classes you know he's, he's like his character's good
and bad.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Now the flip side of
this it could get a lot harder
too, because my prediction isthat it's going to become less
and less Division I teams.
We already saw St Francis isdropping down to Division III, I
think, because they just can'tput the money in.
That it's going to take, andnow you might have even less
spots and who knows, maybe thereal basketball is going to be
played at Division III, right.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Honestly, when did
they implicate the rule?
I know it used to be once youentered the transfer portal you
had to wait a year, correct?
And I mean I'm all for thetransfer portal.
People like Joe Burrow theyreally took.
I mean they definitely used itand it definitely worked.
I mean look at Burrow.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
But I think I would
like to see that rule come back
where you have to almost say, wait a year, there's a penalty
to something.
Yeah, there's got to be somesort of deterrent to just, you
know, keep transferring andtransferring and transferring.
You know, like I said, I don'tblame the kids that are doing it
now, it's a system, it is whatit is.
But like you look at universityof maryland now with with their
coach leaving for villanova, they don't have, they don't have
(29:53):
a roster.
No, like you think about acoach, they don't have a roster.
Whoever, whoever comes in isgoing to most likely bring in
their guys from their old school.
Which is it it creates?
What I don't?
What I think it creates is itcreates a bunch of teams and not
programs.
It's it's almost impossible tobuild a program anymore because
you're constantly building ayear to year team.
(30:14):
It's it has like free agencyand and and professional sports,
but different because it'severy year you have to recruit
your own, to keep your own, plusgo out on, go out on the, at
least in professional sports.
You're signing guys the fourand five years and you have a
plan.
There's no plan now.
It's year to year.
Totally I agree.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Enjoy your high
school experience.
It's rough out here man, it'srough out there.
It was real rough.
All right, guys, I can't waitto hear what next week's topic's
going to be.
I'm already ready.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
No, you're already
ready.
