Jani Ortlund (00:01):
Welcome to He restores my soul with Janney
Ortlund, where you can findencouragement for your busy life
through God's renewing mercy.
Hello, everyone. If you arelistening and you are a leader,
I want you to pause the podcastand go to our website to copy

(00:25):
off enough copies for each ofyour members to have two copies
of the worksheet entitled, "MyWeekly Schedule." You'll find it
on our website, under podcastnumber 146. Go do that right
now.

(00:46):
Well, I just want to thank thoseof you who send in your
questions and comments. We'vereceived wonderful comments and
a few questions as well. One ofour listeners, in Kenya, asked
how she could join up with anonline discipleship group. She
didn't understand how to dothat, and I had to email her

(01:06):
back that we don't have thatcapacity (though I wish we
did!). So, I'm sorry! At themoment, we can only listen and
try to figure it out.
For those of you listening, Ijust want to suggest again, that
For your worship time this week,I'd like to encourage you to
you gather a friend or two andlisten together. You can discuss

(01:26):
things and say your memoryverses to each other, and pray
think together about a song youcan sing as a group. Perhaps
for each other, and then nextyear, you can share what you've
learned with others. So even ifyou don't have a large group to
there's one you sing in yourchurch, or maybe you can look
do this with, gather anotherfriend and try to get her to
one up online or in a hymn book.
In my group, we sing a blessinglisten with you, and then you
can work on it together.

(01:53):
over each other from Numbers6:24-26. We sing it to a tune
that I learned as a child, andit's really easy for the rest of
the members to learn. It's aprayer we like to pray over each

(02:19):
other; a prayer of blessing aswe're concentrating on priority

two (02:28):
our love for the Body of Christ. The idea is
that you can all embrace andsing together.

Colossians 3 (02:43):
16 says, Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly, teaching and admonishingone another in all wisdom,
singing psalms and hymns andspiritual songs, with
thankfulness in your hearts toGod.
Did you get that? Singing psalmsand hymns and spiritual songs,

(03:09):
with thankfulness in your heartsto God. Don't miss out on this
musical dimension in your timestogether. If you are
participating in thisdiscipleship series alone, I
suggest you find a Christianhymn or a praise chorus and
listen to it yourself withthankfulness in your heart to

(03:30):
God. Go ahead now and pause thepodcast to take some time for
this.
Now, we want to go right intoaccountability. Go over your
assignment from last week. Talkabout your six quiet times and
your verses of meditation. Whydon't you pause the podcast and

(03:56):
do that right now? See howeveryone's doing with their
quiet times. Are you readingthrough the Bible together? Are
you staying on line witheverybody else in the right
passages? If not, how can weencourage each other? How can we
help each other? And then shareabout your verses of meditation.

(04:16):
Have they been particularlyhelpful to you this week? Go
ahead and do that now.
Next, work on your memory worktogether. Your books of the Old
Testament, say them together outloud. And then say Romans

12 (04:34):
9-21 out loud together. See how you're doing with that.
Finally, discuss the bookassignment that you had. Make
sure that everyone understoodwhat pages you were to read.
What did they get out of it? Didthey find anything confusing?

(04:55):
What was helpful to them?
Okay, now that wasaccountability. You caught up on
some of your assignments. Now, Iwant everyone to take out your
lifetime and short term goals, just get them out there in front
of you. I want you to reviewthem together and discuss how

(05:20):
you have done with those youwanted to have finished by March
1. Go ahead, pause the podcast, and do that right now.
Next, I want you to take out apiece of paper and revise or
write new short term goals thatyou'd like to have done now, by

(05:42):
June 1. If you, or anyone inyour group needs time to think
this through, make this part ofyour assignment for next week.
Allow as much time as needed tomake this successful and not
burdensome. Pause the podcastwhile you work on this.

(06:06):
Alright, were you able to writeout a few more short term goals?
Remember, you take those fromyour lifetime goals, from which
you have written year longgoals.
Now, I want you leaders to handout the worksheet, "My Weekly

(06:26):
Schedule," that you copied off.
Hopefully you copied off two foreach person in your group. Now,
this might be a littlecomplicated, so really think
carefully. I'm trying to explainthis as carefully as I can. You
might need to listen to it twiceto make sure you understand.

(06:48):
Find the day of the week you aremeeting on, on your weekly
schedule, and move to the nextday. Now, put the date of each
day at the top of the paper, starting with tomorrow. For
example, if I do this lessonwith my group on Thursday, March

(07:13):
10 (which I think I probablywill), we will take our weekly
schedule worksheet and put March11 on Friday, March 12 on
Saturday, March 13 on Sunday,March 14 on Monday, and so on,
until we come to our next timetogether on Thursday, March 17.

(07:38):
Do you see how that works? Thenhave each person fill out her
schedule for the coming week, atleast as much as she can
remember.
Then put the weekly schedulesaway while you share prayer
requests. Go ahead, turn off thepodcast, and share these

(07:58):
requests, taking your time, asI'm not going to teach today. I
want to give you plenty of timeto share and pray together. Then
before you dismiss your group, come back onto the podcast for
your assignment.
I hope that was a good time ofsharing. I hope you're becoming
more and more safe with eachother and vulnerable. I pray

(08:22):
that you're learning how tohonor one another and bear one
another's burdens.
Now here is your assignment fornext week. Again, let's have our
six quiet times. We want that tobecome a life-long pattern. And
let's keep our meditation versebefore us, whether it's on our

(08:44):
bathroom mirror where we put onour makeup, or in our kitchen
where we do our cooking, or inour car where we do our driving.
Keep your meditation verse infront of you. Review or perfect
(keep working on if you need to)Romans 12:9-21. We want you to
store that up way deep in yourheart. And read the next portion

(09:10):
of your book that your group isreading together. We're reading
Bonhoeffer, but I hesitate totell you where to read, because
I think each group is probablychoosing its own section to read
according to your needs.
And then finally, well really, there are two more parts to this

(09:30):
assignment. Take out thoseweekly scheduled papers that you
worked on, and exchange withsomeone else in your group.
That's who you will pray for asshe goes through her week. And
then, that blank paper, thatsecond weekly scheduled paper

(09:52):
that you have, take it home, andbring it back for next week to
share. You're going to exchangeit at next week's meeting. But
write out your schedule. Youmight want to write your three
or four short term goals thatyou're working on as well, on

(10:13):
that calendar, so your prayerpartner can pray for you.

So here's your assignment (10:20):
your six quiet times, your meditation

verse, Romans 1 (10:23):
9- 21. Read the next portion of your book that
you're reading together, exchange your "Weekly Schedule"
papers for this coming week, andprepare a weekly schedule for
the following week to bring withyou to meeting next week.

(10:44):
And may the Lord restore yoursouls as you enjoy communion
with your heavenly Father, hiding his Word in your hearts,
and praying for each other. Godbless you.
