Many times we have a strong urge to please others, but unfortunately it can be at our own expense -- putting our own needs behind everyone else's. While not a clinical diagnosis, people pleasing goes beyond kindness, generosity and altruism. Mothers are a prime target. We all want to love and be loved. However, when we adapt our behaviors to gain favor and sacrifice our own needs, we can get addicted to feeling useful, loved or important. But this can be harmful, especially when it becomes compulsive and lead to codependency, among other gut and GI related disorders.
