Cathy (00:01):
Yoga is not just what happens on the mat in a gym.
But yoga is meant to be a lifejourney.
In this episode, you'll learnwhat a yoga instructor is, what
a yoga teacher is, why they'redifferent and how to know which
one is right for you.// Heyfriends.

(01:21):
Welcome to episode 77 of thepodcast.
I am glad you're here.
Today we are back on the topicof yoga.
Something that I am verypassionate about and have
explored, I guess if you will.
For, oh, I don't know, the past,18 or more years at least.

(01:45):
Yoga is just such a differentpractice than any form of
exercise.
But.
The way I teach yoga, it isintentional movement.
And it also encompasses a wholelot more than just that
intentional movement.
And that's what we're gettinginto today.
We're going to talk about thedifferences in a yoga instructor

(02:07):
versus a yoga teacher.
Before we get into that topic, Ihave a little bit of
administrative work that I wantto bring you into the loop on.
We're going to be switching thepodcast to two episodes a month
instead of four episodes amonth.
So instead of getting an episodeevery week for now, you're going

(02:28):
to be getting an episode everyother week.
You can still find a ton ofgreat content that I'm creating
and putting out there onInstagram and Facebook and in
the Facebook community.
So the social media.
Accounts for Cairn yoga wellnesswill be the place to find that
content.
But for the time being.

(02:49):
We're just reducing the numberof episodes each month and we'll
get back to weekly episodes atsome point.
But for now an episode everyother week is what's going to be
happening.
And I hope that you considerchecking out some of those other
avenues where you're able to getcontent, whether that's through
email.
Instagram or Facebook.

(03:09):
On with the show.
So the difference between a yogainstructor and a yoga teacher is
what we're talking about today.
Now you might use those wordsinterchangeably.
A lot of people do.
But every time someone says thatI'm their yoga instructor it

(03:30):
kind of makes me cringe just alittle bit.
And that's just me getting in myown way.
I'm sure.
But I want to let you know thatthere is indeed a difference
between a yoga instructor and ayoga teacher.
Maybe it's my little ego voiceinside of me jumping in to say,
no, no, no, I'm not just a yogainstructor.
I'm so much more than that.

(03:52):
And maybe I need to quiet thatlittle voice just a little bit.
But also, I think it's just thefact that as a society, we don't
generally realize or understandthat there is actually a
difference in an instructor anda teacher.
And so I want to lay that outfor you today and help you
understand the difference andhelp you maybe even use this

(04:17):
information to decide which oneis right for you because
perhaps, maybe a yoga teacherisn't right for you.
But the yoga instructor isexactly what you need and it's
adequate for what your desiresare and for what your needs are.
So let's dig into it.
A yoga teacher does more thanjust teach a fitness yoga class

(04:39):
in a gym or a club.
We guide you in a journey ofself discovery and understanding
starting with what happens onthe mat.
Starting with that intentionalmovement.
That's how we begin to guide youthrough this journey of
self-understanding and selfdiscovery.

(05:00):
On the other hand.
Yoga instructors or people whomay teach yoga in a gym or club.
And that's where it ends.
But a yoga teacher acts as aguide on your life journey of
self discovery.
And that's the key difference.
But I wanna break it down foryou even further.
So listen on.

(05:20):
Anyone can go out in front of agroup of people and teach yoga
class or teach basic yoga movesand postures.
They might even be able to teachsome pretty complex yoga moves
and postures.
They might be able to stringthose postures together.
Haphazardly and create a certainfeeling in the people that

(05:41):
they're leading.
But a yoga teacher takes thework you do on the yoga mat and
helps you translate it into selfdiscovery.
You might be at a place in youryoga practice where you're
simply coming to the mat becauseyou want that movement.
That's okay.

(06:01):
That's okay.
So maybe you would consider youryoga teacher and instructor at
that point.
And this was not in my notes andI'm simply riffing now, but
perhaps that's what you need inthat moment is just to be able
to do the physical, to get tothe mat.

(06:21):
To go from point A to point B,where there is a distinct point
A and point B.
Maybe the yoga teacher is beyondwhat you need at that point.
And that's okay.
An instructor is someone whogets you from point A to point B
within a relatively short periodof time.

(06:43):
They help you reach a specificgoal.
Maybe that goal is weight loss.
Maybe that goal is being able totouch your toes or just simply
being more mobile.
Whereas a teacher is concernedwith your benefit in a broader
sense.
And perhaps over a longer periodof time.
They may have a more holisticapproach to the outcome.

(07:06):
Rather than focusing on aspecific number of steps to
take, to get to an endpoint.
So it might not be as clear cutas come to class three days a
week, do this, this, and thisand you're going to achieve
this.
And that's often what we seewith instructors.
They have a clear path, a clearset of goals or benchmarks to

(07:31):
hit and to reach in order to getto an intended outcome.
But with a yoga teacher.
They're more concerned with yourexperience on the way to
wherever the end may be.
And quite honestly, if I'mtalking.
Honestly here.

(07:52):
The end is actually death.
Right?
And I know that sounds morbid, but when you begin practicing
yoga, although there may come apoint where you are fully
self-actualized.
And I know that sounds morbid, but when you begin practicing
yoga, although there may come apoint when you are fully
self-actualized that may not bedesirable for you or for the

(08:15):
majority of people out there.
So that being said, The end goalcould be just the end of your
life that you are seeking to bea more whole and complete.
And loving kind, compassionateunderstanding individual.
Over the course of yourlifetime.

(08:36):
So it's not necessarily a pointA point B.
To train for this, take thesesteps to get to here.
Yoga means union specifically.
Union or the interconnectednessof all things.
Which of course means the unionof the body, mind and spirit.

(08:58):
Those elements being seen as allone whole unit.
So a yoga teacher may focus onmore holistic practices, such as
yoga theory, spirituality, meditation, breath, work, and
mindfulness.
Whereas a yoga instructor mayhave more of an emphasis on the
physical aspects of the practicealignment postures, and making

(09:19):
it more physically demanding.
However a great yoga teacherincorporates all these things
when teaching or working with astudent and does so.
Uh, by reading the room or whatthe student needs on that day,
the student who walks throughtheir door, the client who walks
through their door.
A great yoga teacher is going tobe able to feel the energy and

(09:43):
sense.
And ask the questions in orderto know what to put in front of
that client or student on thatday.
It's being able to know what toput in front of the student,
even if it's not in the planthat was prepared for the
session.
Now, I'm not saying that aninstructor couldn't do this as
well.
I'm just saying that aninstructor's focus may not

(10:05):
likely be as holistic as ateacher's focuses.
It may not include all of theother elements such as breath
work meditation, coaching, understanding the mind or where
the student is coming from inorder to get them to the vision
of where they want to be.

(10:27):
By reading the room or theclient on a particular day, the
yoga teacher often has a moreindividualized or personal
approach to guiding a studentaccording to their unique needs
and intentions on that day.
Whereas an instructor may take amore standardized approach.
Another way that yoga teachersand instructors are different is

(10:48):
that a yoga teacher has likelygone through a higher level of
training than an instructor.
And instructor may have receivedtheir training through a gym,
club or organization that alsocertifies in other physical
practices like group fitness orpersonal training, but someone
who considers themselves a yogateacher has likely had a broader
scope of training.

(11:08):
Which also included yoga theory, philosophy and history, along
with other spiritual practices,as well as anatomy and
physiology.
So as well as the alignment andposture and sequencing that the
yoga instructor may have gonethrough there's no specific
certificate or licensure foryoga teachers actually, but

(11:29):
there are registering bodiesthat recognize teachers who have
done so many hours of trainingand who continue to learn and
continue to deepen theireducation as a lifelong journey.
That's how to differentiatebetween a yoga instructor and a
yoga teacher.
And I hope that painted a clearpicture for you of what the

(11:50):
difference is, but there's oneother word that I want to bring
into this that often gets thrownaround with maybe just little to
no understanding of what itactually means.
And that's the guru.
So, where does this word gurucome in when it comes to talking
about teachers, Uh, guru isindeed a type of spiritual

(12:14):
teacher that often has aspecific spiritual path that
they are taking a student downto achieve a higher state of
consciousness or spiritualawakening.
And gurus are often thought tohave a more intimate
relationship with the student.
Knowing the student on a morepersonal level as almost a
sacred bond.
This does not mean they have anintimate physical relationship

(12:37):
with the student at all.
I know that there have beeninstances where this has been
the case in the past, and I'msure there will be instances in
the future where this is thecase where the teacher student
relationship crosses the line.
That's not what we're talkingabout here.
That's not what a guru isconsidered to be.

(12:59):
Traditionally in Easterncultures, once a student begins
to follow a guru, that's thepath that they take to learn
from that one person to comeinto a higher state of
consciousness.
When we practice yoga, are weseeking to come into a higher
state of consciousness?
In a way.
We're seeking more understandingof who we are as people.

(13:20):
So in a sense that may beconsidered elevating your
consciousness.
But that doesn't mean that youhave to seek out some sort of
guru.
Remember how I said that theguru is someone who takes you
down a specific path.
A teacher can very much stillhave a close relationship with
their student and know them wellon a personal level, that's part

(13:41):
of what makes a teacher, ateacher and not an instructor.
But the energy behind therelationship is a bit different
between.
When talking about teacherversus guru, the teacher is a
guide and the expectation thatthe student learns only from
them isn't necessarily the case.
Whereas.

(14:01):
At times if you're placingsomeone in that guru position,
it may mean that you are onlyseeking out their knowledge and
only seeking out their path orway of being.
Not the case with a teacher.
A great teacher will understandand know that there is likely a
time when you will move beyondthem and need to find other

(14:25):
teachers and guides to help themon their spiritual journey as
well.
So if you're looking to learnyoga, get clear on what your
intention is for seeking out ayoga practice or class.
Yoga is often one of the firstelements that draws people in to
be getting to understand andtransform themselves.
They come to yoga, seeking totouch their toes and end up

(14:49):
changing their lives.
Knowing the difference between ayoga teacher and instructor is a
big part of cultivating the selfdiscovery journey you want to
take and how you intend to usethe practice in your life.
As I said at the beginning, ifyou indeed, really are wanting
to just touch your toes thenperhaps a yoga instructor is the
way to go.

(15:10):
But you'll likely have to keeptrying and may even get
discouraged when you get stuck.
Because a great or even goodyoga teacher knows that you
think that touching your toes isall you want to do, but in all
actuality, nothing will changeunless you start to do the
deeper work to uncover andrediscover the parts of you that

(15:30):
need healing and transformation.
Because remember, as I said atthe beginning, yoga means union.
All parts are one.
Transformation happens with justtaking the first step towards
what's six feet in front of you,as you might've heard me say.
For you, that might meanstarting with the foundation,

(15:50):
which could be beginning topractice a yoga sequence that
you can do consistently, thatwill help you explore what a
regular yoga practice can do foryou.
This doesn't have to be acomplex sequence.
It can be as simple aspracticing a sun salutation.
And I've actually got a simpleversion of the sun salutation
recorded and ready for you tobegin practicing with you can

(16:12):
grab it at Cairn yoga,wellness.com forward slash sun
salutation.
And that will allow you todownload a video to follow along
with, to begin moving through asun salutation.
After you moved through severalpasses of the sun salutation,
take a few moments to pause andwitness the result.
You might even journal on yourobservations.

(16:34):
Remember, one of the four stepsin flowing with life, even when
things don't meet yourexpectations is to witness the
outcome.
And that my friends is one ofthe places where journaling and
reflection come in.
You might even do this in thedaily rhythms tracker, that
little handy tool that I'vecreated to help you.

(16:55):
Align with your rhythms.
As I have created space in thereto track your intentional
movement, as well as any otherrhythm you might want to
explore.
But the sun salutation is abasic yoga formula that can
either get you started with ayoga practice.
Or perhaps encourage you to getback on the mat if you've taken
a hiatus from practicing forawhile.

(17:18):
So check out the downloadablevideo in which I walk you
through exactly what to do andhow to breathe with your
intentional movement.
I will link to it in the shownotes.
Or you can check out the shownotes page, which is Cairn yoga,
wellness.com forward slashpodcast 77.

(17:38):
Now, you know, the differencebetween a yoga instructor, and a
yoga teacher, why they'redifferent, and how to know which
one is right for you.
