Cathy (00:00):
Hey friends.
Welcome to episode 90.
This is a fun one today.
It's my annual health harmonyand happiness gift giving guide
episode.
Yay.
I kind of feel like Oprah when Ido this episode, except that I'm
not actually giving you thethings, sorry.
I just get to tell you all aboutthem and remember how much
health, harmony, and happinessthey actually do bring to my
(00:23):
life.
So as I was writing this episodeand as I was pulling all of the
ideas that I have, which I'mgoing to tell you, this is a
little bit cumbersome this year.
Uh, I was able to be reminded ofthose things and to instill that
gratitude for the fact that Ihave these things in my life,
these things, or ideas or, um,opportunities, I guess.
(00:44):
So.
I guess what I'm saying is I'mbringing this to you with all of
my heart.
And I've put a lot of work intoconsidering what are the things
that over the past year, ormaybe even longer.
That have really helpedcultivate.
Health, harmony and happiness inmy life that you could
potentially give to eithersomeone else or maybe even to
(01:06):
yourself as a holiday gift thisyear.
Let's get started because as Isaid, I have a lot to share with
you.
Remember that all of these itemswill be linked for you in the
show notes, and that can befound at Cairn yoga,
wellness.com/podcast.
90.
I will also put that in theinformation on this episode.
(01:28):
So you hopefully will be able tolink right to it.
Although I know that somepodcast players don't allow
those links.
So you might just have to copyand paste it into your browser.
And also I want to remind youthat some, not all, but some of
these links are indeed affiliatelinks.
So if you choose to make apurchase, I might get a little
bit of money love back from theseller or the company who the
(01:52):
product is through.
But please know that I onlyrecommend things that I believe.
In that I believe absolutelycultivate or have cultivated
health, harmony and happiness inmy life.
So this is not all about.
Uh, the money here, but I dowant you to know that.
In some instances, I may begetting a very little amount
(02:15):
back from the seller.
But not all instances.
Because this is a pretty longepisode, you might just want to
skip to the podcast show notespage and actually just skim
through it.
Uh, to be able to look at thethings and there's a description
on that page as well.
Of each item.
But it is a little bit longerepisode.
(02:37):
So a way to quickly scan wouldbe to just jump to the show
notes page and scan through, click on the things that you
think might interest.
Trust you.
Okay.
Now that that's out of the way,on with the show...
I've broken everything down, just like I did last year.
Oh.
And you know, that's the otherthing.
I will link to last year'sepisode as well, because there
(02:58):
might be some gifts that are onthat list.
That you want to make apurchase?
Of this year.
Those are all definitely stillgood options.
But I will link to that becauseit might give you some ideas as
well.
Now we're heading into this busyshopping season and into the
black Friday deals andeverything.
Honestly, some of the thingsthat are on this list, you might
(03:20):
be able to get a good deal on ifyou if you listen to this right
away.
And if you.
If you take advantage of some ofthose pre holiday sales, So do
your research.
And again, I would love it.
If you use the link that I haveshared with you to purchase, if
it's a, if it's one that I'mactually getting affiliate
commissions from, but if not,and you find a greater deal
(03:43):
somewhere else, do it friend.
I'm all about saving money andfinding the best deal.
So.
Um, Yeah.
Do what you will.
All right.
So I have grouped these intothree categories, obviously into
health, harmony, and happiness.
The first things that I'm goingto share with you today are all
involving health and perhaps howto promote health just a little
(04:05):
bit more.
The first thing I have for youguys today is actually one of my
own classes because it's comingup and this could be a great way
for you to reconnect withyourself during the busy holiday
season, or it could be a greatway for you to get your friends
together, get your girlfriendstogether and come together and
have your little holiday gettogether or celebration.
(04:28):
Um, doing something that's alsobenefiting your health.
And this is my winter solstice, candlelight yoga.
And I do this every year on thewinter solstice, which happens
to be December 21st.
The winter solstice is theseasonal reminder of the end of
a cycle.
It marks the end of one seasonalyear and the start of another.
So it's no coincidence that thisday lies close to Christmas.
(04:52):
And the end of the calendaryear, as you wrap up
preparations for the holiday, prepare both your body and your
soul as well.
Nurture yourself with a yoga andbreath work class and workshop
led in the spirit of the seasonby candle glow.
This year, I'm super pumpedbecause I am going to be holding
this class at Dan de farms, which is one of our local.
(05:16):
Greenhouses local farms and it'sgoing to be held under the
stars, in the warmth of a heatedgreenhouse.
So we're in the middle of Iowa.
It's probably going to be coldDecember 21st.
I could be wrong, but it'sprobably going to be too cold to
do yoga actually outside, butwe're going to take it inside
into the greenhouse and do it inthere.
We're going to have it decoratedwith.
(05:37):
Candlelight in one way oranother through the use of
electricity, which will bebeautiful.
And we'll just see what theweather brings.
If the night is clear enough tobe able to experience the actual
stars outside and see them aswe're in that greenhouse.
As I said, December 21st is thewinter solstice, so this might
just be one of those gifts thatyou give yourself or to a friend
(06:00):
who you can bring along with andto come and prepare yourself
physically, mentally, andemotionally for the peak of the
holiday season.
I would love to have you allthere.
This is one of those gifts thatmaybe is just for my local
friends here.
And if you're going to practiceyoga, you're going to need.
A yoga mat.
Right?
And I might've linked to thislast year.
(06:22):
If I didn't.
I know it's on my generalresource page on the website.
But there is only one yoga matthat I absolutely recommend.
And okay too, but it's both thesame brand.
I only recommend a Manduka mat.
I really, really love theManduka pro mat.
It's a little bit thicker andheavier and it's the right size
(06:44):
so that you aren't messing withor distracted by the fact that
your Matt's not wide enough orit's not long enough, or it
moves around.
It's truly the best Matt outthere.
I have both the travel versionand the Manduka pro.
And I usually just use thetravel version for traveling,
but for years I used the Mandukapro to travel and it came with
(07:06):
me.
On the airplane.
Or where, or wherever in the carthat I went, but it's the only
mat that I recommend for dailyuse.
They have a lifetime guaranteeand they'll not wear out and
start falling apart after a fewmonths, like most other cheaper
mats that you would just go buyat the store.
They're meant to be practiced ondaily and to only get better
(07:26):
with time.
The Manduka pro is thick enoughto provide comfort for your
joints yet stable enough that itwon't be a distraction during
your practice.
Some of those mats that you canbuy that are a little bit
thicker because you think youwant.
Because of the, um, the softnesson your knees or your elbows or
your back or wherever it may be,actually don't provide stability
and make it harder to balanceand harder to focus and harder
(07:49):
to.
Tune inward because you're sodistracted by the mat.
They do offer an extra longversion.
You don't have to get that.
The standard, mat.
Size is 26 inches by 71 inches.
And it will suit most everybody.
So if you're starting a yogapractice or recommitting to your
(08:09):
yoga practice with the new year,Or if you know someone who is,
this is the mat to go with.
And if you're practicing yoga.
You might also need some.
Accessories to go with now.
Not everybody requiresaccessories.
Like yoga blocks, a bolster oryoga strap, but you might.
(08:31):
And I've been doing a morerestorative practice with my
students and clients in the endof their sessions that does
require the use of at least oneblock.
The next thing on my holidaygift giving list is yoga blocks.
You might find it useful to useblocks to bring the floor up
closer to your hands as a way tosupport yourself in some
(08:51):
postures, or if you're juststarting out and know that your
mobility is limited.
I definitely recommend having apair of yoga blocks on hand for
those times that you'repracticing at home.
Now the type of block that youchoose totally depends on
personal preference, but I dorecommend that any block you get
is at least nine by six by fourinches.
(09:12):
at tHe studio, I have differentHeights of blocks because as you
progress.
You might need to go a littlebit lower than that four inches.
So I do have that optionavailable, but if you're at home
standard nine by six by four isgoing to be the best option.
And whether you go with cork orfoam, that's your personal
preference.
The cork blocks that I havelinked to in this episode, I
(09:35):
like, because they areenvironmentally friendly and
they actually have fun.
yogic designs on them.
So there's some with an elephanton them.
There's some with a Mandela onthem.
Um, there's some with the homesymbol on them.
So you get to have yourpersonality infused into them.
Or if you know the person thatyou are purchasing them for
choose a design that mightresonate with them and wallah,
you've got a beautiful gift.
(09:56):
Now since I started recommendingyoga blocks, I will say that the
one thing that I'm not so fondof with the cork block is that
they eventually start to wearout and the little crumbs of
cork start to break off and itmakes it kind of messy.
I don't seem to have thisproblem so much with the Manduka
cork blocks.
But they are a whole lotpricier.
(10:17):
So I did not share the link forthe Manduka blocks in this
episode, but if you want topurchase those, please go ahead
and purchase those.
They are definitely moreexpensive.
They also don't fall apart as.
Much or as soon, I guess, asother cork blocks, I would say
that all cork blocks eventuallywith time wear out and start to
(10:38):
chip away or start to crumble.
But I have found that theManduka blocks do have a little
bit longer life before theystart to crumble.
The other bonus or benefit ofcork blocks is that they are
firmer and heavier than foamblocks.
So they're a little bit morestable.
But that's kind of just apersonal preference type of
thing.
If you don't want the mess ofthe cork block, then foam is the
(11:02):
way to go.
So I've linked to some foamblocks for you to check out that
are reasonably priced and thatcome into two pack.
Also Manduka does offer foamblocks.
And I do have the Mandukablocks.
In the studio.
I have the like ergonomicManduka blocks at the studio,
but they're not necessary.
And they're a little bitpricier.
And the reason I have them isbecause I have a wholesale
(11:25):
account with Manduka.
Um, So, if you are just buyingblocks for yourself or for
someone else as a gift, youmight want to go the Manduka
route because they are a littlebit nicer.
But the blocks that I havelinked to that are the foam
blocks are.
Also beautiful and come in manycolors and you can choose ones
that would fit the person thatyou're purchasing for.
(11:47):
Foam blocks are also a whole loteasier to clean than cork blocks
because you can just spray them, wipe them down and cork blocks
are a little bit harder and theydon't dry as well.
Either one it's personalpreference.
I have both at the studio that Iuse with clients and for myself
and it's just going to be whatyou feel is best for you.
(12:07):
I did mention that I started todo this restorative posture with
students and clients at thestudio that involves blocks.
The other essential ingredientin that is a bolster and a
rectangle bolster is what isideal, not one of those round.
Pillow bolsters that youmight've seen at your massage
therapist or on a bed.
(12:30):
But a rectangle bolster and Ihave two rectangle bolsters that
I actually recommend.
One is the Manduka one is theGaiam brand.
And Manduka again is going to bea little bit pricier, but there
are reasons that I like theManduka bolster even more.
So let me dive into why I'm evenrecommending a bolster before we
get too far.
As I said, I've started invitingstudents in class and my clients
(12:53):
to create a really restorativeneste almost when they move into
final relaxation at the end oftheir practice, or even just for
meditation or self care anyother time throughout the day.
Now you will be able to find areel of me teaching you how to
create this little restorativenest soon on Instagram.
It's not up yet, but it will besoon.
(13:15):
So.
Watch for that on Cairn yoga, wellness, Instagram account,
because I'm going to give you arundown of what you need and how
to set yourself up in thislittle nest.
And trust me, it's totally worthit.
Even if you are just settingyourself up to rest for five
minutes.
You need a yoga block and arectangle bolster, which is why
(13:36):
I'm offering up the idea for abolster in blocks has a gift
idea for someone on your listthis year.
That's the bare minimum that youneed to set yourself up in this
super restorative nest or superrestorative practice.
You could use two other yogablocks and another bolster.
So to support your arms andlegs.
But it's totally not necessary.
(13:56):
The real, like I said will beavailable soon on Instagram.
So watch for that.
I'm giving you a couple ofoptions for bolsters.
Like I said, because I preferthe Manduka bolster.
This is what I have at home.
This is what I have some of atthe studio.
But I like it because it's alittle bit firmer and it's not
so lumpy.
The Gaiam bolster is thicker, isa little bit lumpier than the
manduka version.
(14:17):
And it's a little bit lessexpensive.
But the yoga bolster pairedwith.
Blocks could make a beautiful, beautiful and generous gift for
someone on your list this year.
If you know that they are intoself care, if you know that they
are wanting to have more selfcare, this could be the little
(14:37):
nudge.
That helps them just create thatand gives them the permission.
Two.
Pour into themselves, even whenlife feels chaotic around them.
And I know that the new year isthe time of year that people
like to recommit to themselvesand their health.
So I want to share some thingswith you that you or someone you
love might be able to use to dojust that.
(14:59):
I'm going to give you a littlebackstory first.
I used to be a health andfitness director at Which means
I did a lot of purchasing afitness equipment.
I was easily able to see whatequipment wore out the quickest
and what had a longer life withlots of use.
One of the things that was themost versatile and honestly used
(15:20):
the most.
were the exercise bands fromgroup fitness classes to member
use to personal training clientsbands were an easy tool that
anybody could benefit from atany age.
And with any ability, whetheryou were recovering from an
injury or whether you wereactually trying to build.
More strength and endurance.
I even created a whole bootcampprogram when I was at the Y,
(15:44):
that was just using bands andfor the most part, body weight.
Um, so I know how beneficialthey can be in cultivating
strength and endurance in body, mind and spirit because you know
what you do with your body andhow you use your body.
Also creates the beliefs and thethoughts and the qualities that
we have in our lives and that wewant in our lives.
(16:04):
So the brand that I always comeback to, because I know it's a
reliable company with qualityproducts is spry.
They have been in the fitnessindustry for years and they know
what they're doing and they makereally good quality stuff.
Resistance bands along withtheir attachments can be good
resources.
If you're wanting an in-homeoption for strength training
(16:25):
without a huge expense.
I'm actually in a season of mylife right now in which I use
these resistance bands prettyregularly, because they don't
take up a lot of room at thestudio.
And I've just been needing morestrength in my life in more ways
than one right now.
And this particular set ofresistance bands comes with
extra light to extra heavyresistance.
(16:46):
And it also comes with a dooranchor handles and an ankle
strap.
So you can use the bands for atotal body workout.
When I'm working with a privateyoga client, and I noticed an
area of weakness.
That needs more than what we'rejust doing on the yoga mat.
I can easily work with them on aband exercise that can help
supplement their practice, whichis a beautiful thing.
(17:07):
And this is another reason why Ilove these bands.
So if you're wanting to get backinto some healthy routines in
the new year, or, you know, someone who could benefit from
these or needs their ownexercise bands replaced, because
I have found that most peoplehave exercise bands at home.
They do have a shelf life andthey do wear out and.
And if they break, when you'reusing them, it's not fun and
(17:30):
it's not good and it's not safeand it could seriously injure
you.
So it's essential that even ifyou have bands at home, that you
check them out, that you knowhow old they are, that you get
rid of them before they get tothat point, that they are so
worn out.
That they might injure you ifyou're using them.
I just went off on a tangentthere.
I'm really sorry.
So, If you're in the market forbands or want for exercise bands
(17:52):
or want a way to beginincorporating a little bit of
strength training back into yourlife or into your routine.
Exercise bands.
Hands-down.
A very good place to start in avery good thing to introduce
back into your life.
And if you are the type ofperson who already has a
(18:12):
beautiful health routine, beautiful wellness routine that
you follow.
Perhaps you would consideryourself a little bit of a
health nut already, then thesenext things that I'm
recommending actually might befor you or for someone who is
like you, because I thinkanybody could benefit from
taking super greens.
And especially if you are inthat place in life where you're
(18:33):
a little bit further in yourhealth journey If you haven't
introduced super greens intoyour life yet, perhaps now is
the time.
Or if you know someone who is ahealth nut, and you know that
they don't take super greenspowder, maybe this is the time
that you give them this as aChristmas gift.
We have been taking greens in apowder form for quite some time.
(18:55):
And honestly, I have seen thebenefits in our overall health
since beginning to take them.
Power greens, powder supportimmunity.
They boost energy, they offerprobiotics and they support your
body in the way it processesstress, which is a beautiful
thing because it supports itfrom the inside out and gives
you the ability to be healthieron the inside so that your body
can tolerate stressfulsituations, even better.
(19:18):
I take super greens everymorning in my adrenal cocktail.
And I can definitely tell adifference in digestion and
ability to fight off illness.
And there's a whole host ofresearch out there on
SuperGreens and of course, Thereare a lot of options for brands
that you can purchase for supergreens as well.
But this Jocko brand is thebrand that we choose to use
(19:42):
because of the flavors and theprice.
It's kind of middle of the roadprice.
And because my husband alreadyhas used this brand of
supplements for years, for otherthings, Um, so he did all the
work and figuring out that itwas a trusted brand, but mostly
he.
But mostly he knows who JockoWillink is.
(20:02):
He has met him.
He, uh, believes in his messageand what he brings to the table.
So that's kind of why he chosethat brand.
And that's why we use that brandquite honestly.
I've included links for atwo-pack option, which is a
peach and a pineapple option orpineapple coconut option.
And I've included links to theindividual canisters.
(20:25):
Now we have this setup withAmazon to do a subscribe and
save.
So every month we get twocanisters and two canisters.
Make it exactly for Matt and meboth.
To be taking super greens everyday.
And.
Right on schedule.
Amazon delivers the next packagewhen we need it.
(20:48):
So it's kind of convenient andit is just an investment in our
health that we find essentialright now, especially with
having young kids at homebecause.
They bring home so much stuff.
And even if we do get something.
I feel like our immune systemsare just better able to fight it
off more quickly than when weweren't taking SuperGreens.
(21:11):
Now we also do other things likeice baths and, um, breathing
and, and intense breath work tohelp stave off illness.
But SuperGreens.
Definitely plays a role in allof that.
For what it's worth.
If you have someone in your lifewho you love and who has maybe
thought about taking greensbefore, but hasn't, maybe this
is the gift that you give them,or maybe you give it to yourself
(21:34):
because you want to try takingthem.
And who knows?
I'm not kidding sometimes.
They're deeply discounted onAmazon.
So you might get a really gooddeal on them.
Absolutely.
Now, if you want to drink thosegreens from a water bottle, I
have just the water bottle forthat.
I don't usually drink my greensfrom water bottle because I do
them in a mixer bottle.
But you might, there wouldn't beanything wrong with putting them
(21:56):
in a water bottle, shaking itup.
And there you go with yourgreens.
And I have just the water bottlefor you.
The simple, modern 32 ouncealuminum water bottle is the
water bottle that I have and Icarry with me everywhere.
And it actually fits in myrefrigerator water.
Thing, which is perfect.
My kids is don't.
(22:16):
They have a 40 ounce waterbottle and it kind of drives all
of us bonkers that they don'tfit in the.
The refrigerator waterdispenser, but my water bottle
does, and I absolutely love it.
the other things that I loveabout this water bottle that I'm
recommending are that it comeswith both the straw option or
the chug spout.
So you get to choose.
And depending on what I'm doing, determines which one I use.
(22:41):
When I'm driving in the car andI'm going to be driving the car.
I use the straw because I don'twant to be tipping my water
bottle while I'm also trying tofocus on the road.
So it's really very versatile.
And another reason that I likedthis water bottle when I was on
the hunt for a new water bottle, because my glass ones broke.
Was because it doesn't have abig, giant logo from some other
(23:02):
company on it.
So I found a color that I lovedand then I just had our local
screen printing company, put thebrand or the logo for my
business on it, by engraving iton it.
Then I could still fill my waterbottle with all the stickers I
wanted to match my personalityand.
Wallah.
(23:22):
I've got a water bottle that hasme written all over it.
They have lots of colors, so youcan pick one that helps you
create the intention you want inlife.
And you might not know thisabout me, but I love to ride my
bike.
I have, since I was a kid, itwas my favorite thing to do
actually, when I was a kid.
I definitely don't ride as muchas I used to because well, life
(23:44):
with three kids.
And even when we do all go outfor a family ride at the ages
that my kids are out, we stillhave a tagalong and a Burley.
So it's definitely a two adultride if all the kids are coming
and this isn't always possible.
Nonetheless, any chance I get...
love to ride my bike.
And one of the things that I nowfind essential to writing is my
(24:06):
phone.
For safety, so I know how farI've gone, and for tunes.
And I have a little bag on mybike that I've used in the past
for my phone, or I'll use thepocket in my Jersey, but I like
to be able to see the screen.
More easily than stopping andtaking it out of the carrying
bag or out of my cycling Jersey.
so I finally broke down thispast year and invested in a
(24:27):
handlebar phone holder.
And I say invested because ofcourse I overthink purchases and
I want to make sure that I amgetting just the right one for
me.
So it's a process.
And sometimes I find it hard topurchase things that aren't
absolutely essential that justadd to the fun or convenience of
something, because I think thatmy money could be spent in other
(24:49):
ways that are more essential.
And yes, I realize that this is.
Something that I am workingthrough on a spiritual level as
well, but.
That's just how I am.
But this little device makeswriting with my phone so much
more convenient.
So I want to pass it on to youbecause it would make a good
gift idea for someone.
(25:09):
Who is maybe like me and doesn'toften treat themselves.
To the things that are just niceto have and not essential.
Actually my husband purchasedthis
Cathy Overdub (25:19):
phone holder
Cathy (25:20):
first because his brother
had this
Cathy Overdub (25:21):
phone holder and
Cathy (25:22):
he really liked it.
So I can have my husband'sbrother to thank for taking all
of the decision-making work outof it for me.
And, I actually can think mysister as well, because I used a
bike holder on her daughter'sbike and I didn't like that one.
So I knew, which one I kind ofwanted to go with.
Nonetheless.
(25:43):
If a bike
Cathy Overdub (25:44):
phone
Cathy (25:45):
Mount.
For your handlebars is somethingthat might interest the cyclist
in your life.
Then check out the link for theone that I recommend.
AnD finally, and this kind ofgoes along with the biking
thing, but when I'm doing justabout anything active, I've got
at least one ear, bud, inlistening to something, whether
it's music or a podcast or abook in my head.
(26:07):
But the problem with havingearbuds for me is that I have
real small ears and regularearbuds never seem to stay in my
ears.
And I know this is like a supersilly problem and you probably
don't have this problem becauseI rarely meet someone who has
small ears like me, but I justcannot wear regular earbuds.
They absolutely do not stay in.
Even if I'm just sitting at mydesk, they don't stay in.
(26:29):
I have small ears.
So once I find earbuds orheadphones that I know will work
for me.
I have to stick with them.
So I'm going to share with you.
The earbuds that I actually use,I use the J labs sport earbuds
because they have a ear hook onthem and they stay in my ears.
They have pretty good soundquality.
And although I'm not superimpressed with the microphone,
(26:52):
when talking on the phone, theircapability to let me listen to
whatever device I'm wanting tolisten to is great.
And you can control the volume.
From the headphone itself, aswell as turn noise canceling on.
And they even have a be awaresetting.
So when you are wearing both andyou still want to be able to
hear what's going on around you.
for safety issues, especially ifyou're out running or biking and
(27:14):
you need to hear, the thingsthat are going on around you.
Then they have that option.
I usually just wear one ear, bud, when that's the case.
But it's available and it'spretty cool feature.
they also have a long batterylife and their sweat proof.
I have noticed that because thevolume is adjusted by touching
that ear hook and the play stopfunction is also adjusted by
(27:37):
touching the ear bud, that on anoccasional windy day.
If my hair is not all contained.
It has changed the volume orstarted or stopped whatever I
was listening to.
Just by my hair touching it.
So they're pretty sensitive, butoverall, I've had these
(27:57):
headphones for a few years andthey definitely make listening
on the go much more enjoyableand help me enjoy doing those
things that I do for health evenmore.
Okay.
Let's get into the gifts thatnow communicate.
Harmony in your life.
You know, we're all about selfwork around here, and I want to
share something that may notnecessarily be considered a
(28:18):
gift, but something fun to doduring the holidays to
understand yourself a little bitmore.
I know the holidays get hecticand you can easily find yourself
trying to please other peopleand do it all.
Wait.
You might always find yourselfdoing this.
So maybe it's just magnifiedaround the holidays instead of
paying attention to what'sreally most important and
(28:39):
essential.
That being said, it's still funto do the things that aren't
essential while also rememberingthe why behind it.
Like I just said, sometimes Ihave a hard time buying things
that aren't essential.
That are just for fun or justnice to have same thing with
doing things for yourself.
Now, I will say that I am muchbetter in my life about doing
the things for myself that arejust nice to do or fun to do.
(29:03):
Um, so I know that progress isbeing made in my life.
That being said, I know thattaking the time to do things
just for fun or just becausethey're nice to do can be a
little bit tricky depending onwhat your do it all inner power
animal is.
Yep.
I said do it all inner poweranimal.
(29:24):
If you are a do it all person, you need all the more reason to
remember to do things just forfun.
And this is a fantastic way todo just that.
Instead of scrolling when youneed a break in your day, take
five minutes and take the, do itall inner power animal quiz that
my coach Deb Blum created.
My animal is the elephant, whichactually doesn't surprise me.
(29:46):
Considering elephants are mysecond favorite animal behind
turtles.
And if I'm honest, it mightactually be a tie between those
two animals.
And.
It doesn't surprise me.
Because of what the elephantstands for according to Deb.
Cathy Overdub (30:00):
The elephant is
Cathy (30:01):
a beacon of reliability
and integrity, inspiring others
through your commitment anddedication.
And the affirmation that shepairs with the elephant goes
like this.
I release the need for rules andexternal expectations and trust
in my own wisdom.
Totally spot on.
I am the rule follower and to myfault, actually.
(30:24):
So definitely.
Um, the elephant describes me.
That affirmation is definitelysomething that I need to remind
myself of daily, especiallyduring the holidays.
And there's a whole lot moreinformation that you get when
you find out what your innerpower animal is, and how to go
about using the qualities of itfor your benefit, instead of
(30:45):
focusing on the challenges youhave, and she even includes a
list of TV or movie charactersthat are the same inner power
animal as you.
So it really could help you getthrough the holidays because you
might just understand yourself alittle bit more and then give
yourself a little bit of grace.
And there are five other do itall in our power animals.
And I'd love to hear what yoursis.
Share it in the comments of theshow notes.
(31:07):
If you do end up taking thequiz, it's just a fun thing to
do.
And after you find out what doit all in our power animal, you
are, you might have found outthat rest or really embracing
downtime is not your forte.
So I've got something that canhelp you with that.
This is another perfect gift togive yourself for the holiday
season.
My friend, Melissa Weinman ishosting a free winter recharge
(31:29):
virtual pampering week for momsduring the holidays.
Take some time for yourself andindulge in relaxation and self
care.
All the winter recharge contentdrops on December 26th and runs
until December 30th.
You don't have to show up at aspecific time it's available for
free for the entire week.
So when you do have time toenjoy it, you can enjoy it at
(31:53):
your leisure.
I know that week of Christmascan be busy with kids home and
visiting relatives.
So what better time than to planrestorative time in for
yourself?
If you sign up for the winterrecharge, then you already know
you have something that you canturn to, to help give you that
space for replenishing yourselfso that you can pour into others
(32:14):
and fully be present and enjoythe people that you are around
during the holidays.
It's a time when you can closeyourself in your room and maybe
watch and take part in somepampering for yourself.
There'll be a variety ofpresenters and I'm actually
going to be leading a session onfinding calm in the chaos.
Each session is prerecorded soyou can watch or listen whenever
(32:36):
you have a little downtime.
I'd love to have you take part.
It's a beautiful free gift thatyou can give yourself to
recharge your batteries andstart the year off as your best.
Speaking of the holidays.
Do you want to be able to flowthrough the holidays instead of
just endure them?
To be able to find calm in thechaos.
That is inevitable.
When the kids are out of schooland schedules, even if you don't
(32:58):
have kids, are just not thesame.
And do you want to do all ofthat, but don't have a ton of
time to dedicate to whatever isgoing to get you to that place
of flow?
I thought so.
Here's another gift foryourself.
I teach a weekly 30 minutebreathing class that can help
you slow down tune into yourinner guidance and what you're
really needing and use yourbreath to get there.
(33:21):
And the best part each class isrecorded.
So if you can't make it inperson, you can listen whenever
you have the time.
Although, if you can make it inperson all the better, because
you are taking ownership of youractions and creating space for
change to actually happen onyour calendar.
It happens on Wednesdays and youcan find all the details on my
website or in the link in theshow notes.
(33:44):
The next thing on the list thatspeaks to harmony and flow in
your life is a set of hikingcards.
I've been eyeing these cards forquite some time.
And if you recall last year, Itold you about the native spirit
card deck that I like to playaround with and often take
hiking.
Well, a fellow yoga teacher.
And nature lover and amazinglife guide, who I believe also
(34:07):
has some training in forestbathing, and also has a yoga
studio in small town iowacreated this beautiful deck of
cards to take with you on hikes.
Michelle Wilson with radiantwellness solutions created these
cards and they are designed togive inspiration to you before
or during a walk or hike andguide you deeper into your
experience through connectionand mindfulness.
(34:30):
These would make a greatstocking stuffer or gift for the
person in your life who loves tospend time in nature and maybe
even loves to hike.
They come in a beautiful littlebag and box and are about the
size of a deck of cards sothey'll easily fit into your
hiking bag.
Listen on for the hiking bagthat I actually recommend.
(34:50):
Now that we've talked the funit's time to talk a little bit
more structure.
I want to share with you myfavorite place to get my planner
for the year.
Because as you know, friends, the new year is coming right up.
So if you haven't thought aboutpurchasing a planner, don't wait
until after the new year.
Sometimes I have done this andhonestly it works much better if
you buy your planner beforeJanuary 1st.
(35:12):
But now is probably the time toget out there and purchase it
because the company that Itypically buy my planner through
always has some good deals forblack Friday and cyber Monday.
And that company, which I lovelove love is called plum paper.
They have customizable planners.
You'll pay a little bit morethan the planner you pick up
from the box store.
(35:33):
But if you're like me and liketo have your planner and look
and feel how you truly will useit to its maximum.
Then it's totally worth it.
I customize mine to align withmy flow process for productivity
throughout the week and day.
So I can start the day settingintention and prioritizing my
top three.
Then I schedule out what I wantmy day to look like and end with
the gratitude or reflecting onmy blessings.
(35:56):
I went back to a paper planner acouple of years ago and still
also use my Google calendar, butI find that my brain remembers
things better when I write itdown and science backs this as
well, by the way.
And it gives me a spot to writedown my, to do's and my God's to
do's for me.
I like the way that I can see myweek laid out on a paper planner
(36:17):
versus my phone or desktop.
And I've ordered from thiscompany for years and they only
continue to evolve and getbetter and better and better and
add more options andfunctionality, so that you can
make your planner as adaptableand you, as you want it to be.
I customize everything from theoutside cover to the way the
pages are set up inside.
(36:37):
And when I'm disciplined to useit, it works great.
But I know all too well, thestruggle with discipline is
real.
Yes.
Even for me.
And it's when I'm not maximizingthe use of my planner, that life
also feels more chaotic aroundme.
So I know that using a planneris essential for me and being
able to write things down andget them out of my brain.
(36:59):
You've heard me say this before.
Is the way also that I can feelclearer and feel calmer and less
chaotic about life.
This company truly, allows youto create a planner that brings
you joy and productivity eachtime you use it.
So check it out.
It's called plum paper.
(37:19):
plum paper.com is their website.
And honestly, you probably wantto block out a little bit of
time in your calendar toactually build your planner.
Um, or decide the structure thatyou want.
But it's so worth it.
Friends.
I'm not even kidding.
It's so worth it.
I fill my planner every yearand, um, Yeah, this is the
(37:39):
company that I have found andI've used lots of other
companies, but this is thecompany because you can
customize your planner that Iabsolutely love check it out.
All right.
If electronic planners.
Are more your style.
Then the next thing on my listmight be the thing for you.
Now.
I use a Google calendar.
We use Google calendar foreverybody in our family, we keep
our ducks in a row as far asscheduling for our family.
(38:02):
But you need a device to havethat Google calendar on, and
that could be your phone or itcould be a computer.
And I want to tell you that.
I've had a surface pro for acomputer for many years.
And it finally started to dieout.
It was a surface pro for.
Okay.
And last year it finally startedto die.
Um, but because I love it, lovedit so much.
(38:24):
I didn't even have to questionwhat kind of computer I was
going to get next.
I now have a surface pro seven, which wasn't the newest model
when I bought it last year.
Um, but it was an upgrade and itwas in my price range.
And it can do all the things Ineeded to do, including
producing this podcast.
And I know that it has a tonmore functionality than I even
(38:44):
know how to use.
But I do love it.
It makes getting my work doneseamless and does connect to my
phone as well.
So I can access documents andapps on both devices on one
screen.
Now you apple people out there.
I know this is like old schoolfor you, you know that all your
apple devices connect.
It's not as easy necessarily forAndroid users.
So I will say that the surfacepro does a nice job of allowing
(39:09):
that functionality to connectthe phone with the computer.
So if you're in need of a newcomputer or device for Christmas
or someone, you know, is this isa great option and it's
reasonably priced and, and it'sportable as well; it's light.
It can go anywhere and there aresome great case options out
there for carrying it around andfor keeping it safe, if you are
going to move it around a littlebit more.
(39:31):
And I'll to round out thissection on harmony.
I've got some books to sharewith you.
The first one, I sped throughreading this past year because
it is a short little read, butit's filled with so, so, so, so,
so much goodness.
and I probably, as I waswriting, this was thinking, I'm
going to just read this againquickly at some point in the
near future, because it is verygood.
(39:52):
It's Don Miguel Ruiz's his bookcalled the four agreements.
in this, he unpacks his thoughtson the source of self limiting
beliefs, as well as.
Uh, beautiful code of conduct toend the suffering that we place
on ourselves so that we canindeed live with more health,
harmony and happiness in life.
These are four simple thingsthat we all can begin to become
(40:16):
more aware of and create littleshifts in the way that we
perceive and approach life.
It's a beautiful reminder thatwe are all connected.
And just to honestly, a goodcode of conduct for living by it
makes a beautiful gift foryourself or others.
And it's literally a littlebook, so it could easily fit in
a stocking.
(40:36):
I know that I got this book frommy husband last year.
It had been on my wishlist andhe.
Purchased it for me.
Last year.
And I I'm so grateful that hedid because it was, I wasn't
expecting it.
It was just one of those booksthat was on my list that I was
like, Hey, someday, I want toread that book, but.
My husband is really good at.
(40:57):
Crafting.
Um, thoughtful.
Gifts and.
He had put together, curatedthis.
This beautiful gift package forme.
And it had this book in it.
So.
It's another thing that maybecould be combined with.
Something else.
Um, I know he had given me somebath salts, I think, oh, that's
(41:18):
another thing that I could haveput on here.
He found a great company thathas these amazing bath salts.
Um, And I think paired that withthis, and it was just the most
beautiful gift.
Communicating.
The importance of self care.
And rest and, um, It's amazing.
(41:41):
It's like he kind of knows meor.
Maybe like he's lived with mefor a while and understands me
and understands where I'm comingfrom.
So I'm very fortunate to havehim in my life and, um, that he
gave this book to me because itis a beautiful book and I
recommend it to anybody to read.
It's short, it's quick.
Um, Check it out.
(42:02):
And the last book is anotherbook that I received as a gift.
And I absolutely love it.
If you have someone in your lifewho appreciates the Bible and
spends time with God, this is abeautiful version to tune into.
This is not the whole Bible.
It's just the new Testament, butit is the first nations version
of the new Testament.
(42:23):
And, oh my gosh, you guys, it islike, Listening to a native
story around a campfire.
And it makes some of the storiesin the new Testament.
So much more understandable, even though the new Testament is
a lot easier to understand thanthe old Testament, but this
version of the new Testament.
Is absolutely.
(42:43):
Beautiful and so easy tounderstand.
I've been telling everybodyabout it.
One of my friends who lives in adifferent state?
Just sent me a message one dayand said, Hey, do you have this
first nations version of the newTestament?
And I said, no.
And she said, I'm sending it toyou because I think you would
absolutely love it.
And if you know me.
And you know how much I lovethose native spirit cards, um,
(43:04):
that native American culture.
Just resonates with me.
And, um, so this is a beautiful, beautiful version of the new
Testament.
And even if you're not a Biblereader, it's written in a way
that is just sounds like storiesabout different tribal leaders.
And ah, it's beautiful.
(43:25):
I can't say enough good thingsabout it.
I highly recommend it.
That rounds out our harmonysection.
Of the podcast and we're stillgoing strong.
So we've got happiness.
And I'm going to tell you thatin this happiness section, some
of these things are amazing andthey are so fun.
So I'm super pumped to, um, totell you about them because.
(43:46):
Oh, my goodness.
I got to tell you about sometoys in a little bit.
Um, and then just other thingsthat, that just, just bring joy
to my life, bring happiness and,and help me.
I just remember how possible itis to be content in wherever you
are in life, whatever seasonyou're in.
So the first one is thePatagonia Atom sling bag.
(44:07):
This is my favorite, favorite, favorite bag for everything you
guys.
I don't carry a purse anymore.
I used to, and I used to have,oh, boatloads of persons.
I love them.
I love to.
Oh, change them out all thetime.
And somewhere along the road, itwas after I had kids.
I decided this is not for me.
I don't want to be that personanymore.
That has all the purses.
(44:29):
So I don't carry a purse.
I usually just carry my phonebecause I use a case that keeps
my most used cards inside of it.
I'm going to link to that aswell.
But when I do need a bag, likefor traveling or hiking or day
trips with the kids.
This is my go-to.
I have other cross-body slingbags and.
Oh, they just don't compare tothis Patagonia bag.
(44:52):
Um, it's a cross body bag.
That's not too big and it's nottoo small.
And I received it as a gift andit's honestly, one of the best
gifts I've ever received.
My sister is usually prettyfantastic at shopping.
In fact, she would tell you.
Um, if, if she weren't apharmacist, she'd probably like
to be a personal shopperbecause.
She's amazing at it.
She really is.
(45:13):
And I'm not to say this.
I mean, like anybody can saythey like shopping.
Right.
But I don't know.
She is.
She's good.
Hands down.
She's good.
So, um, I can thank her forintroducing me to this bag
because she had one and I saw itand I'm like, oh, I really like
that bag.
And then sure enough.
My next birthday.
Voila.
I received one.
Um, I like it because I can clipmy water bottle to the back of
(45:35):
it or onto it.
So when it's on my back, thenit's got clips across it.
And so I can clip that waterbottle that I already told you
about.
On the back of it.
I can also clip a hat to it.
So it's functional in thatregard and it fits everything
else that I might need-- thosespirit cards I talked about now,
my hike, like a Yogi cards.
it can fit sunscreen, a journalor a book and some snacks.
(45:56):
Um, it's got a small outerpocket and a divider inside of
it to keep things separate and akey or a chapstick pocket on the
front strap.
And it comes in a variety ofcolors and it would make any
adventurist in your life.
Happy.
I'm sure of it.
It is a very nice gift and itwould be a very generous gift to
(46:17):
give someone.
But, um, It's amazing.
It's amazing.
And it goes right along withsome of the other gifts that
I've told you about today.
All right friends.
Now, the next thing.
When you can't get out.
And hike as much as you'd liketo be, or get the natural
sunlight because you live in theMidwest or in the Northern
(46:38):
states, basically anything aboveAtlanta, Georgia.
You might need a little extrahelp getting the necessary rays
of light that you need to feedthe mitochondria in your cells
for energy.
So you might need this nextitem, which is the Varilux happy
light Lux.
I got this as a gift again, lastyear I got it as a gift.
And, um, last winter was thefirst winter that I used this.
(47:01):
And.
I noticed an incredibledifference in my mood, in my
energy.
Um, just by starting to use it.
Uh, I use it 15 to 20 minutes aday in the morning, and I think
it really does help.
Light therapy has been shown tohelp with seasonal effective
disorder by regulating yourmelatonin and serotonin levels.
(47:22):
Which can also boost mood andalleviate symptoms of depression
associated with the change inseasons.
Light therapy also helpsregulate your circadian rhythms.
When they're thrown off fromeither early morning waking or
staying up late at night and itmight help with insomnia.
And non seasonal depression.
But for me, I noticed that I hadmore energy during the day and
(47:43):
it helped me wake up in themorning a whole lot faster, and
it boosted my mood for the mostpart during the winter months,
when there is less light.
Hands down.
One of the best things I starteddoing to contribute to my
happiness in the colder monthsand if seasonal effective
disorder affects you, or youstart to feel a little bit more
blue during the winter monthsand you just feel down.
(48:06):
Then this might be something tocheck out and maybe this is
something that you either giveus a gift or you just buy for
yourself because it is truly, truly beneficial.
I mean, I noticed a differencein the days that I don't use it
versus the days that I do useit.
So, um, it's definitely worthchecking out, but I like this
particular model because it hasa timer on it, so I can.
(48:28):
Turn it on.
I can adjust the light.
On it, there are differentlevels of the brightness of the
light and different hues.
So it can either be a, a cooleror a warmer light, and then you
can set a timer on it.
So it's very handy because whileI'm doing my morning journaling
or devotion time, Turn it on.
And I sit there and I do mything and it turns off when it's
(48:50):
done.
Um, and it's, it's absolutely.
A blessing.
So very much the happy light, the very Lux happy light.
Is something that, um, you mightconsider.
Now I mentioned that I don't usea purse and I usually just have
my phone, and the case that's onit.
And the case that I have alsocarries my cards.
(49:12):
I've had a case like this for myphone for quite a few years,
because I've stopped carrying apurse and this one's nice and
slim.
The.
The case that I'm linking to,you know, I don't even know the
brand.
Um, but it's for a Samsung S 22.
And it's a case with cardholder.
Uh, I can't pronounce the brand,so I'm not even going to try,
but it's one that I found onAmazon and I really, really do
(49:34):
like it.
I think it's great.
It holds two regular thicknesscards with one smaller card.
So I hold my debit card, mylicense and my library card,
cause it's a little bit thinner.
It comes in quite a few reallybeautiful colors.
So there are lots of options.
I don't have an iPhone optionbecause I'm an Android user, but
I'm sure there are options outthere that resemble this, that
(49:54):
you could get.
This would be a great, greatstocking stuffer.
It's inexpensive, superinexpensive.
And, um, For me, the simplicityof not having to carry much with
me.
Makes life just feel lighter.
Makes me happier to not have tocarry all the burdens or all the
stuff around with me.
Um, It opens me up and opens myenergy up.
(50:16):
So the phone case, totally, totally a good thing that brings
happiness to my life.
Now the next thing.
Is, something similar to, theheadphones that I already told
you about.
But it's a bit different.
We got a waterproof showerspeaker for my husband for
father's day.
And this little thing is sofantastic.
(50:40):
We mostly keep it in the shower, but we could easily bring it out
on the kayak since it iswaterproof.
And it's small, it's got decentsound actually for a little
speaker and it's easy to use.
We used to bring one of ourother speakers, like our Bose
speaker into the bathroom, whenever, we were showering or
getting ready and you have toturn the music up so loud when
the speaker is not in the showerwith you.
(51:01):
That I hated it because Iwouldn't turn music on.
Then because our daughter's roomis on the other side of our
bathroom.
So I wouldn't turn music on thenbecause I didn't ever want to
wake her up.
If she was sleeping or disturbher.
So having the speaker in theshower makes getting ready or
even shower time.
So much more convenient tolisten to, and you don't have to
have the speaker blasting justto hear the music over the
(51:24):
running water.
And this is kind of one of thosegifts that you don't always
think about.
But for the person who may be alittle bit harder to buy for but
also likes to listen to things.
On their phone or on theirdevice, this might be a really
good option.
It's relatively inexpensive.
It could make a stocking stufferor could just be a good dad gift
for, um, a dad or husband thatyou don't know what to get
(51:47):
anything for because maybe theyhave everything or they just buy
the things for themselves.
So, this little waterproofspeaker has really good reviews
and good reviews from us aswell.
We have no qualms with it.
It's it seems to do the trick.
Pretty well.
Speaking of getting ready.
For many years, my sister and I,yes, the one who is the shopping
(52:10):
expert.
Called ourselves hairdryer,snobs.
We'd go back to visit ourparents.
And the hairdryer that wasavailable for us to use was just
crap.
It wasn't powerful.
And it took a for ever to dryour hair and like our hair would
just be limp and Ugh.
It was just not good.
So we quickly realized that wehad to bring our own hairdryer
(52:32):
whenever we traveled home.
And it's funny because we didn'thave this conversation and
might've been like when we wereboth in college, um, we would
just naturally bring our ownhairdryers and then.
In one encounter in the bathroomwhen we're both drying our hair
or both wanting to dry our hairor needing to.
We were like, oh yeah, we haveto bring our own because mom's
hairdryer is so terrible here.
(52:53):
And then we started to realize,oh, we're kind of hairdryer
stops.
Um, I don't remember whathairdryer we were using at that
time in our lives when, when we,um, discovered that, but it was
a good one So eventually thosehairdryers from the first time
we started realizing that wewere hairdryers, snobs died out
and my sister had a newhairdryer and I still thought my
hairdryer was pretty dang good.
(53:14):
And I loved it, but I canremember being at my mom and
dad's and.
Um, We at this point then, Atthis point in our lives, we had
started communicating like, oh,we're both going home.
Are you bringing your hairdryer?
Am I bringing my hairdryer?
She had said she was bringingher hairdryer.
So I was like, all right, I'mgoing to leave mine at home.
Used hers and her hairdryer was.
(53:35):
Amazing.
Amazing.
It was this Rusk weightless one.
actually my sister'shairdresser, I think recommended
it to her.
So I would just plan on herbeing home when I was home and
use her hairdryer whenever shewas home.
Um, long story short, she endedup giving me one as a gift years
ago.
And finally, just finally, thisyear we ended up giving my mom
(53:57):
one.
I don't know why it took us solong, so many years.
To get that woman a decenthairdryer, but we finally did.
So I'm sorry about that, mom.
And I'm glad you finally havethe amazing hairdryer that we
love as well.
Um, but perhaps it was becauseshe doesn't have as much hair as
we do either way.
We now have the Rusk weightlesshairdryer, and it is the bomb
(54:22):
diggity.
Yes.
I just said bomb diggity.
It's the best hairdryer outthere well, at least in my
opinion, um, it's amazing.
This Hairdryer, the Ruskweightless hairdryer is powerful
and is definitely at the top ofthe list in the hairdryer world.
So.
You're going to pay a little bitmore for it.
But it is so worth it.
And you know what, it's lessthan a hundred dollars.
(54:43):
So here's the thing it's lessthan a hundred dollars.
So it's not like it's not thatexpensive in if you're thinking
of.
Um, hairdryer appliances and howoften you buy those, you don't
really buy hairdryers thatoften, at least you hope you
don't.
And if you have a good qualityhairdryer, you're not going to
have to buy a new hairdryer asoften.
So wimpy dryers, just leave yourhair flat and limp.
(55:04):
And this dryer is so much theopposite.
It would make any woman withhair happy.
I'm telling you.
So check it out.
If you've got a woman who ishard to buy for in your life.
Maybe check this hairdryer outbecause, um, it's amazing.
And when you're done in thebathroom and you're ready to get
dressed, you'll need socks thistime of year if you're in the
(55:25):
Midwest.
And a few years back, I foundthese positive affirmation socks
and gave them to quite a fewpeople as Christmas gifts.
If you've been around here atall, you probably know how much
I love affirmation.
So of course.
These are right up my alley.
These socks are called notes toself socks.
they're great for the people inyour life, who you want to make
(55:45):
sure they know just how specialthey are to you all the time.
Or maybe those people who geekout on positivity and or self
work, kind of like me.
Uh, you can start your day beingreminded of how awesome you are
and end it by kicking up yourfeet at night and being reminded
once again, how amazing you are.
This company,, notes to self hasgift sets and socks geared
(56:08):
towards specific professions.
So it might be an ideal gift togive teachers or coaches,
nurses, or first responders, ormaybe your student.
they have everything from infantand toddler socks to
compression, socks, to athleticand ultra low cut socks.
This is a 100%.
Woman owned business.
And I believe they're actuallylocated right here in the
(56:29):
Midwest in Kansas.
And the socks are also made inthe U S of a, which is so
wonderful.
And the company regularlydonates to nonprofits, including
women's and homeless sheltersand children in need.
So it is a very, genuine andauthentic company that is out
there to actually spreadpositivity in this world.
(56:51):
And it is beautiful.
They have a great story.
they're nice little notes toself to remind the wearer that
they matter in this world.
And that just brings happinessto whoever has them.
Now, onto the really fun stuff Itold you we were going to be
talking about fun stuff here itis the games and toys.
Okay.
I am sharing only games and toysthis year that both adults and
(57:15):
kids would enjoy.
Even if you're an adult, thesegames are ones that anyone of
any age can enjoy, for the mostpart.
Our kids got a ninja line lastyear for Christmas, and it is
seriously one of the best gifts.
You do have to have two trees ortwo posts that you can tie this
ninja line to.
(57:35):
But they can do all theclimbing, balancing and swinging
on it that they want.
And honestly it supports myweight even.
I can even play on it with thekids and I think my husband
probably can too.
Um, it's just a matter of how itgets tied up and how high off
the ground it is.
Um, but if you've got some kidsin your life, this is a great
option and it will get themoutdoors.
Or if you have a big enoughbasement, It could get them
(57:57):
active this winter even.If youcan tie it up inside in a
basement somewhere.
But it will get them out thereand moving their bodies.
And I honestly think that theyeven have a$10 off coupon going
right now, if you go out topurchase this, and my guess is
they'll have sales for blackFriday and everything.
The next thing that I want totell you about is the Hasbro
(58:18):
Buppet game.
Oh my goodness.
Oh my goodness.
I love this game.
This is a game that you can playsolo or against someone else.
And there are five or sixcommands.
The computer in the game makesyou do, and the levers or knobs
on the game that correspond withthe commands-- either bop it,
spin it, twist it, flick it, orpull it.
And as you go, the commandsbegin to speed up.
(58:40):
So it's a game of not onlymuscle memory, but of also
speed.
Now, when I was growing up, someof my cousins had one of these
and we were constantly trying tobeat the high score on it.
We didn't have video games, butwe did have this at their house.
This was generally at they're asecond home.
And so there wasn't a whole lotof TV watching happening or
video games being played becausethe idea was to be there and
(59:04):
relax and be on the water ordoing things like that.
But there are times when youhave to have indoor games and
indoor things to do too.
And bop it was the best game.
It was so, so much fun.
So for whatever reason, it cameto mind last year, before
Christmas.
And then I was on a mission toget my son one for his birthday,
which is three days afterChristmas.
(59:24):
If they still made them, Ididn't even know if they still
made them, but for whateverreason, the Bobbitt tune came
into my head.
And, uh, then I was hooked and Iwas on this mission and I had no
idea if they even still madethem, turns out after
researching, they do still makethem.
And I started looking last yearin November, and I saw that they
(59:44):
existed.
And purchased it, but it said itdidn't know when it was going to
be available to ship.
Luckily, one of my friends whois also a teacher had a couple
buckets in her fifth gradeclassroom to use during indoor
recess.
And she gladly handed them over.
Now I understand why she handedone over because, um, they are
noisy little toys.
(01:00:05):
But they are fun.
And they can be taken in thecar.
They can be they're easilytransported.
They can be played.
By anyone, but she gave it to usso that we could have a physical
gift to give him for hisbirthday, because I didn't know
when this new bop it was goingto be arriving.
It turns out it didn't arriveuntil like February or March or
something, but.
Since we've had both of them.
We have spent hours.
(01:00:27):
hours.
playing them.
And, um, they are just fun foreveryone and it appears that
they are more readily availablethese days.
And I don't think you'll have towait two or three months to get
them.
But they are available.
They're out there.
It's called the Bop It! Extreme.
Um, and it's a game of skill andspeed and memory, and O helps
(01:00:48):
your, helps your, your braindevelop those, those pathways
that as we age.
Sometimes are not as fluid.
And so if you are aging and evenif you don't have kids at home,
this could be a fun little gameto sit around and play with your
spouse or significant other.
That's great.
Now another great.
toy for the family is theperplexes maze ball.
(01:01:11):
And I am specifically talkingabout the rebel maze ball today.
Um, it's amazing.
Ball game that you have to tryto move this tiny silver ball
through a series of mazes insidethis clear plastic ball.
And it's tricky and everyone inour house has a fun time using
this and playing us.
And there are different levelsto try and get that ball through
(01:01:34):
or to.
But there's a lot of differentversions of the perplexes maze
balls.
There's even a Rubik's cubeversion that makes you have to
twist the block and get thesilver ball where it needs to
go.
We have this version as well, but I haven't even attempted it
because it looks so tricky.
And, um, I haven't ever evenmastered the rebel maze ball,
(01:01:56):
but it is possible because.
I'm sure Matt and Huck have, have mastered it.
Um, But I always seem to drop inthe same, drop the ball in the
same place, but it's a funthing.
The rebel, from what I candetermine is one of the base
versions that isn't ascomplicated as the other, so
it's a good place to start, butthese maze balls, Um, we were
(01:02:16):
introduced to.
Years ago from one of ourfriends and, um, It is, it is a
beautiful gift idea.
It's.
Totally fun.
Um, So if you, if you areinterested and you want.
Something, I've also included alink to the, uh, The.
(01:02:37):
Spin master perplexes fusionthree by three, which is like
The rubik's cube version of thismaze ball.
It's more challenging.
I haven't tried it, but I knowthat the, um, original perplexes
maze balls are a great time andare fun for everybody in the
family.
So definitely.
Promoting that happiness and therelease of those good feeling.
(01:03:01):
Hormones like dopamine andoxytocin in your body.
THat rounds out the happiness.
Section.
Which actually rounds out theentire episode, friends.
This has been.
Along episode.
So thanks for staying with me.
Um, I gave you a wide range ofideas, so pass this episode and
(01:03:21):
post onto others.
And some, you might just want togive to yourself or do yourself
like the inner power animalquiz.
That's just a fun little thingto find out about yourself.
I hope this holiday seasontreats you well and that you're
able to slow down and really bepresent for all that happens
around you.
(01:03:41):
One last thing before we go, ourfamily also likes to put an
emphasis on experience gifts andbelieve it or not after hearing
this list, because it's a lot ofthings on this list.
A lot of what our extendedfamily likes to do for us is
experience gifts.
In the past, we've also done anexperience file for our kids.
And this is a simple, easy thingthat you could do, uh, for your
(01:04:04):
family or for your kids.
I purchased one of those littlepocket type accordion files.
And label each tab with a monthof the year.
Then in each pocket, I puteither a coupon or a gift
certificate for some sort ofexperience or adventure for our
family to go on.
Some of the coupons are homemadethat I've just printed off on
card stock.
(01:04:24):
Some of them are actual couponsfor local businesses or things
that we could, that we areplanning to go on.
These don't have to be bigthings.
They can be things like a tripto the ice cream shop with.
Ice cream shop gift cards in it,or a trip to the rec center for
swimming with.
rec center day passes, or evenjust a little coupon for a
family bike ride that we thenprioritize during that
(01:04:47):
particular month.
You're likely creative and canthink of things that would
resonate with your family, butit can be a great way to
encourage not just the gettingof stuff, but the connection and
potential that comes with doingthings together throughout the
entire year.
