El virus del Nilo Occidental se transmite únicamente a través de la picadura de mosquitos infectados — no se contagia de persona a persona. La mayoría de las personas infectadas no presentan síntomas, pero aproximadamente 1 de cada 5 puede experimentar fiebre y síntomas similares a los de la gripe. En casos más graves, puede causar inflamación del cerebro, especialmente en personas mayores de 60 años o con el sistema inmunológico comprometido.
