(01:03):
Hey there, happy Monday andwelcome back to another episode
of the Healthy Hot Mess Mompodcast.
Thank you so much for tuning inwith me today.
I'm grateful that you are hereanother week.
Thank you for tuning in.
From the bottom of my heart.
I just wanted to say thank you.
This has been a journey ofalmost three years podcasting,
so I'm super excited and Iwanted to just share a little
(01:27):
episode about something that'sbeen inspiring me lately and I
hope that it resonates with you, because I think you know, we're
all busy doing our own thingand sometimes something that's
going on in the media orsomething that's going on in the
world can really help inspireyou to keep going on your
journey.
And I am obviously recordingthis.
It's the summer of 2024.
(01:48):
And the Summer Olympics aregoing to be taking place at the
end of July in Paris, and I, forone, have been tuning in and
watching a lot of the replays ofthe Olympic trials and I just
find it so inspiring when theytake moments and they interview
some of the people and you hearhow many times they've tried and
you see how many world recordsare trying to be and you just
(02:09):
see the passion in thesepeople's eyes and the desire of
you know, wanting to be better, wanting to strive for more,
wanting to be a gold medalist, and I just thought there was so
many like inspiration andmotivation and just positivity
that can come from looking atthe Olympics.
You know if you're on a healthjourney, so I'm kind of just
(02:31):
going to like break this up intolike my thoughts I jotted down
while I was kind of watchingthis and kind of how it could
correlate or help motivate youin your health journey, weight
loss journey, whatever kind ofjourney that you're on that you
are looking to better yourselfin.
And the first thing is all aboutpreparation, right?
Is that starting point?
Looking at all the Olympians, they all started somewhere right
(02:52):
, like maybe it was when theywere a child and they started
swimming, maybe it was in their20s they decided that they
wanted to go for gold, you know.
So, no matter where you are inyour journey, we all whether
you're an Olympic athlete oryou're just a mom trying to do
the best that you can we allstart somewhere right, and
that's just a good reminder thatyour journey doesn't need to be
compared to anyone else's andwhere you start is where you
(03:16):
start.
It's always your journey and Ithink, hearing a lot of the
Olympian stories and hearing youknow some, like I said, had
aspirations from when they werevery small children at like six
years old and some that didn'treally start, you know, even
training for the Olympics untillike in their 20s, 30s.
There's all kinds of stories, you know, you can hear if you
just really look for them, andit does inspire you to say like
(03:39):
no matter how old I am, nomatter what my circumstances are
, I can start now.
It doesn't matter what the pasthas done, what it looked like,
it doesn't matter.
This can be my starting point.
So kind of like preparing, starting, just realizing that to
be an Olympian obviously takesdiscipline, it takes consistency
, it takes goal setting, justlike a health and weight loss
(04:00):
journey, right Like consistencyis key.
I think if you actually sat downwith all these Olympians, the
one thing that they probablywould all have in common is they
stayed consistent, workingtowards their goals.
Maybe it didn't happen as fastas they wanted, maybe it took a
lot longer and it took a lot oftrial and error and it took a
lot of failures, but this iswhat got them.
You know there, the little tinygoals over time, the putting in
(04:22):
the work after day gets them towhere they want to be, and you
know that's obviously theOlympics and going for a medal
and all of those things andmaybe for you it's obviously not
a gold medal, but it's maybefitting into your pants and
feeling confident.
Maybe it's going to the doctorand having all kinds of great
lab numbers, maybe it's justfeeling like you have energy at
two o'clock in the afternoon,right?
(04:42):
Just remembering that we allstart somewhere.
We all have to prepare, we allhave to go through some of the
trials and tribulations, nomatter what our goals are.
That this is normal, whetheryou're like an Olympian or not,
right?
So just a reminder that we allhave a starting point, right?
The next thing that it kind ofreminds me of and I heard this
story after story of hearing alot of the people with their
(05:03):
training.
So, depending upon where you areand what you're looking to do,
it's just really looking to beconsistent with some type of
training, whether it's justmaking sure you go to bed at
nine o'clock at night or 10o'clock at night so that you get
consistent sleep.
Maybe that's what you'retraining for good sleep.
If you're training to run ahalf marathon or a 5k, it's.
(05:23):
What does that look like?
Are you putting a map out thereto reach your goal?
You know athletes, obviouslythey have coaches, they have
trainers and they have goalsthat they're working on.
They have a training process.
They have this consistenttraining day after day, week
after week, and that's going tokeep them motivated.
That's going to keep them ontrack.
That's going to keep theirhealthy habits moving them
(05:44):
forward.
Keep them motivated.
That's going to keep them ontrack.
That's going to keep theirhealthy habits moving them
forward.
So I believe that, as busy momsyou know, we're all doing this
every day with other things.
But are we being regimentedabout our own health goals?
Are we looking at it like it'sa training process?
And, like I said, it couldliterally be just that you want
energy at two o'clock, like whatare you doing?
What's your training for thatlook like?
You know, what kind of gameplan are we putting in place to
(06:05):
make sure that we feel energizedat two o'clock, to make sure
that we're getting enough sleep, that we're fueling our bodies
in a good, positive way?
You know the athletes reallystrategize and really hone in on
what that looks like.
What that map looks like couldbe something that maybe we
forget about because we're sobusy being organized and
regimented with everything elsewe have to do with our kids
(06:26):
schedules, with our jobschedules, with trying to make
time for your husband, all thesethings, and if you don't really
strategize your own health andwellness journey, it can just
easily go to the wayside.
So I think another thing, justa reminder, like I said, not
that we're Olympic athletes, buthaving a training process or
some type of system strategy inplace for where you want to go
is important.
(06:46):
Um, so another thing that I sawconsistent when I was watching a
lot of these Olympics, likewhether it's the trials for
swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, all the things
that didn't make it, but thatother sister was in her corner
(07:13):
cheering her on, and this yearthey're both going to go to
Paris.
So, having parents that supportyou, having a coach, having a
trainer, having friends andfamily all around you or someone
that can help you reach yourgoal, these people all have
support systems.
They have teammates.
In some cases, you know, theyhave coaches, trainers, all
(07:33):
kinds of people in their cornerhelping them reach their goal,
and it really speaks to thatthing where we're not just alone
in this journey.
Like, I want to be here foranybody that's willing to, you
know, reach out to me.
I think we all have, whetherit's a Facebook community.
Whether it's the baseball moms, whether it's you know women at
the bus stop, whatever it is,you can find a community of
(07:55):
people that are willing to getin your corner and help support
you on your health journey.
You just have to be vocal aboutit.
Obviously, these Olympicathletes aren't sitting at home
saying I want to be an Olympicathlete and not doing anything
or not sharing that with peoplethat can help them get to their
goal.
And I think there's no betterlike visualization as the
(08:15):
Olympics.
When you look at, every singleathlete has a coach.
Every single athlete hassomeone in their corner that's
helping them get to that goal, that's helping them map out
their journey, that's helpingthem get through the struggles,
that's helping them through thefailures.
They all have tremendoussupport systems and there's just
(08:37):
no better parallel than theOlympics to see that, because
not one person is doing it alone.
Not one person has no backing.
They're all there and they havea tremendous support system.
So, really looking to findoutside the box resources for
that, if you don't have thepositivity within your family,
if you don't have it with yourspouse, there is always a way to
find a group that will haveyour back.
You don't have it with yourspouse, there is always a way to
find a group that will haveyour back.
It doesn't have to be relatives, it doesn't have to be somebody
(08:57):
that you know.
Sometimes, in some cases, it'sbetter that it's not, you know,
because there's judgment andthere's past history and there's
just people that are too closesometimes.
So, really looking for thatoutside support that can help
you get to whatever your goalsare.
Another thing that I noticed isand you know, you've heard this
(09:18):
time and time again likeathletes get injured.
Athletes, you know, have issueslike whether it's mental health
issues or whether it's like aphysical issue.
Or I saw one of the track andfield.
There was like a false startand the person was disqualified
and that's devastating, right, like absolutely devastating.
You worked so hard and you hadthis huge setback and what I
kind of noticed from a lot ofthese stories that were being
(09:38):
played and what you're hearingand kind of what you see play
out, even in the media, sometimes with some of the
Olympians, is that it's reallyit defines you as a person, with
how you handle these setbacks, right, like how you overcome
these challenges in your journey, because at some point they
probably have all had an injurythey had to overcome.
(09:59):
They probably had some type of.
Maybe it was a false start, maybe it was just like something
in their personal lives thataffected them, getting into the
mental game again.
Maybe it was a mental healthissue, things that have happened
that they've had to overcome, that they had to work through
and you know, for them it's inthe spotlight a lot of times and
for us we have the luxury ofnot having that.
But we will all have some typeof setback.
(10:20):
We will face adversity in ourlives, but it doesn't mean that
we should just throw in thetowel on our health and wellness
.
So it's really saying, ok, thisis a situation, this is where
I'm at, but how am I going toget past that?
How am I going to handle thissetback?
What kind of mental, you knowthings am I going to do to help
me get past this hurdle?
(10:41):
Whether it's maybe getting atherapist, maybe it's confiding
in your spouse, maybe it's justreaching out to that person and
sharing.
Maybe it's going to physicaltherapy if you have an injury,
maybe it's looking for a coach.
Whatever it is for you that issetting you back.
It's really how we handle thesetback, as opposed to the
actual setback, because in reallife we've all had hard days,
(11:02):
right, we've all had issues,we've had trials, tribulations,
all those things.
But I really respect theathletes that are able to come
forward with their challengesand they're able to, you know,
share it in hopes to help otherpeople, and I really think it's
how they're handling that andthey're coming back stronger and
better than ever in a lot ofcases.
And I think that really speaksto you know the mom journey too.
(11:25):
We are all in this.
You know fast-paced world kidsneeding so much from us, jobs
demanding more and more.
You know finding time pacedworld kids needing so much from
us, jobs demanding more and more.
You know finding time for aspouse and have a healthy, happy
marriage, all of these things.
And then something could comein and upset that and it's like,
well, you're the last thing onthe list, but instead it's
really looking at that as likehow can I put myself first that
(11:46):
I'm in the best headspace, thatwhen these setbacks do happen, I
can face them head on, I knowhow to handle them, I know I can
move past it and you're goingto be stronger for that.
And I think in a lot of caseswe see that the athletes are
actually stronger afterovercoming something.
Another thing that I've noticedis, you know, obviously, being
(12:06):
an Olympic athlete, you aregoing after those medals,
especially the gold right, andthey just celebrate those
milestones with such joy.
That is obviously the end goalof what they're trying to reach
for.
It's what they've been likedreaming of all their lives and
they're taking those moments toactually acknowledge all of
their milestones, all of theprogress, all of the hard work
(12:29):
and even if they have a setback, they're still acknowledging,
like maybe they didn't get thegold, but maybe they got silver,
and they're just acknowledgingand so proud and they just exude
the celebratory time in that, instead of just like kind of
beating ourselves up, which iswhat I think a lot of us do, we
do as a lot like moms.
In a lot of cases, if we don'treach the pinnacle of what we
(12:49):
dreamed of, like if we don'tlose 10 pounds but we lose eight
, we're kind of like, oh, I justwish we lose last two pounds
and we focus on the negativesometimes.
But I feel like they are reallyabout being their personal best
, about achieving the smallgoals, celebrating those wins,
and you know I've talked aboutthis on a lot of the podcasts
before, but it's really focusingon the small wins and sometimes
(13:13):
for these Olympians it's justthe journey of actually
qualifying for the Olympics.
Sometimes it's going to theOlympics and just having that
experience and knowing that nowthat you've been there, you know
how to come back next timestronger and get that medal.
You know celebrating thosemilestones along the way and not
getting upset if you don'treach exactly what you wanted,
(13:35):
but recognizing all the hardwork and progress that we've put
in all along the way, like allthose workouts, all those steps,
all those nights of good sleep, all the things that you're
doing to work hard on yourself.
We need to take a second andacknowledge them.
We're always acknowledgingthings for others, but we're not
really good at acknowledgingthem for ourselves and giving
ourselves a pat on the back.
(13:56):
Another thing that I noticed istypically what it seems like
when they're being interviewed.
But you hear their stories.
They are like focused onobviously getting to this step,
but they have a longer termvision of everything that they
want.
Right, they're looking at likethese are just small steps that
are going to get me to a journey, but they're not just like this
(14:20):
is all I want and then I'm done.
They're always reaching formore.
They're always striving to bebetter, they're always striving
for the best version ofthemselves.
It seems like and I think that'sjust a nice reminder that it's
okay to be a visionary, it'sokay to dream big, it's okay,
it's awesome to want to be youknow, fitting into your jeans,
fitting confident or feelingconfident, having energy at
(14:41):
three o'clock in the afternoonit's amazing to want all those
things and we should want thosethings.
But too often we go through themotions of life, just dealing
with feeling fatigued, feelinglike garbage, gaining weight,
not understanding why, and wedon't take a second to say, hey,
what was my goal and what werethe steps that I was taking to
get there.
Instead of just going throughthe motions, they are really
(15:03):
focused on health and wellnessbeing a lifelong journey, really
focused on health and wellnessbeing a lifelong journey, not a
sprint, but the marathon to theend, and how they can enhance
their journey, how they can makeit better, how they can enhance
their physical attributes, howthey can enhance their training,
how they can enhance feelingbetter, having more energy,
striving for all of those thingsthat we all want but we often
(15:26):
forget about.
So I think, looking towardsthat long term vision and being
okay to dream and being okay tosay like it's great if I don't
get to the end end goal, but I'mgoing to work my butt off to
try to get there, because I knowat the end it feels so good,
and I mean, for the most partthat was kind of the notes I
took, things that were wereinspiring to me, just kind of
(15:47):
things I noted.
But I hope that you know, insome capacity you can tune in to
the Olympics and findinspiration from something, find
motivation from someone's story, from a certain sport Maybe
it's.
You want to get involved inrunning and the marathon runners
just astonish you with how fastthey are and it just blows your
(16:09):
mind and you want to just likesay you know what, I'm never
going to be an Olympic athlete, but darn it, I want to run a
race this year.
That's great, right, like itdoesn't have to be to be an
Olympic athlete and that's notwhat I'm saying.
I'm not going to be an Olympicathlete, I have no intention of
it, but I think it's an amazinggoal if you have that right.
But for us moms just literallytrying to better ourselves, I
(16:30):
think it's okay to dream, it'sokay to want more, it's okay to
feel good, and we shouldn't feelguilty about it.
I've spoke about that a lot andI truly believe that we all
deserve to feel good, andsometimes it's just about taking
that time to really researchand figure out what is it that
makes us feel good and whatmakes us feel like garbage, and
really focusing on that.
But, all in all, I hope youguys can watch the Olympics,
(16:54):
find something in there thatinspires you and use that as a
motivator.
Use it as a tool to just remindyourself that this person
started somewhere too.
They came out of the womb anddidn't know how to walk, just
like you.
Honestly, like we really thinkabout it, we all kind of start
the same way.
Some people just do more withit than others, right?
(17:15):
So just a reminder anything ispossible.
You can do this and everyonestarts somewhere.
I do want to leave you with onething that I talk about on this
