And while you're at it, supporting the show by buying
me a coffee helps me keep bringing you valuable episodes
like this one. So thank you so much for being
here and for listening, and for letting me be a
part of your solopreneur journey. All right, my friends, today
we're diving into content types and how to choose the
(02:49):
one that's right for you and alignce with your unique
strengths and goals. But before we jump in, I want
to mention really briefly about my recent video, The TikTok Man. Now,
if you've been wondering what's next for content creators with
this major shakeup, I share what I've chosen to do
and how it's impacted my strategy. So be sure to
(03:09):
check it out on my YouTube channel, which is YouTube
dot com slash at Dimitria Zina. For a deeper dive
into why I'm leaning more into YouTube shorts and long
form video, I'll leave a link in the show notes
for my YouTube. So let's jump into today's episode, Grab
your favorite coffee or tea, and let's figure out the
best content type for you. First of all, I really
(03:42):
believe when figuring out your content type, my friend, that
you have to start with what you love. I want
you to think of a heart. I want you to
think of all things beautiful, all things wonderful and glorious
and lovely. And that's basically, in a nutshell, the things
that you love at the heart of everything you do.
What is it you do that brings you joy and
lights your fire? It makes you happy. I'll tell you
(04:05):
what I love. Whenever I am on this microphone or
when I'm on a video and I'm sharing content that
helps my listener, I love that. It just does something
to my soul. Whenever I'm singing, whenever I am writing
a book, whenever I am doing something that I know
is going to make a difference in the lives of
(04:25):
those who happen to be on the receiving end of
what I'm creating. It makes me feel so jazzed and
so good that I can do something that I can
make a difference. That little old me can make such
a huge splash in this world means everything to me.
So here's the deal. The best content type is the
one that you actually enjoy creating. So your content should
(04:48):
feel natural. It shouldn't feel like pulling teeth. Let's think
about this. Are you a writer, at heart, Then in
that case, blogging might be your sweet spot. You can
channel your thoughts into article, you can create newsletters, and
you can even repurpose your writing for social media. But
if putting words on a page feels like second nature
(05:08):
to you, then this just might be your lane. So
think about how you want to present your content in
a way that most resonates with you. Another question I
have for you is do you love to talk? If
you're anything like me, you do love to talk. And
so if that's the case, podcasting could be for you.
When I found out how much I loved just hopping
(05:29):
on a microphone and sharing my heart with listeners all
around the world, I couldn't get enough of it. I
got hooked on podcasting, and I have been podcasting for
twenty years. I love the medium of podcasting just because
it's so easy and such a great flow for the
way I think, in the way I want to present.
So then in that case, if you love podcasting or
(05:51):
you want to start, then just grab a microphone and
let your voice shine. Whether you're chatting solo or you're
interviewing guests, podcast is a fantastic way to connect with
your audience on a deeper level. And then my third
question for you would be, is being on camera your jam,
because then you want to let your light shine through
your videos. For me, I personally love all three of these.
(06:15):
I love writing, so I'm a blogger. I love talking,
so I'm a podcaster. But I also like being on camera.
I don't always want to be on camera, don't always
feel like being on camera, but that's probably why I've
determined that podcasting was the easiest medium for me. But
lately I'm enjoying being on a camera more and more
just because I can see the benefits of showing up
(06:37):
in that space, and I'm okay with that at this
point in my life. Wasn't always in that space, but
now I am, and so I do enjoy creating video.
I enjoy the editing process and the creative process and
the flow, and I enjoy adding all the elements into
the videos and bringing in my music and my intros
and outros, and I just love all of that stuff.
(07:00):
So if that's what you love doing, then maybe you
want to show up on video, maybe long form video,
but if not long form, maybe you want to try
YouTube shorts or Instagram reels or even TikTok now that
it has made a comeback. Video content might be great
for you because it allows your personality to really leap
off the screen so that your viewers can really connect
(07:23):
with you on a three dimensional level, which is very,
very different than listening to a podcast or reading something
on the screen. Just remember that your main content type
doesn't have to live in isolation. You can always diversify later.
You just start with one thing and then let that
one thing be your foundation, and then from there you
can add all the other bits and pieces to the
(07:45):
puzzle if you so wish. The next thing is asking
yourself where does your audience hang out? So knowing your
audience is super important. You have to know who they are.
You have to really dive deep into understand and your
customer avatar, which I do talk a bit about on
some of my previous shows and on my YouTube. So
(08:07):
I do talk about finding your customer avatar, which I
think is a really important part of building your business,
so you know who you're talking to. But if your
audience is scrolling Instagram, you might focus on creating visually
captivating posts or reels, and if there are professionals on LinkedIn,
perhaps you want to make blogs or videos and maybe
that will work better for you on LinkedIn, maybe even carousels.
(08:28):
Your audience's habits can guide your strategy. For example, while
I'm a podcaster at heart, I know my audience loves
engaging with content on YouTube and LinkedIn, but with TikTok's
recent uncertainty, I've been leaning into platforms where I know
my audience is active, like YouTube or even LinkedIn for example.
In fact, my latest video about shifting strategies due to
(08:51):
the TikTok band dives into this in more details, so
make sure to give that video a watch, which I'll
leave in the show notes. My next tip for you
is to experiment and around. So we're going to talk
about experimentation for just a moment, because your first content
type might not be your forever content type, and that's okay.
The beauty of being a content creator is the freedom
to pivot. Try blogging for a few months, see how
(09:13):
it feels, and then give podcasting or video a shot.
Sometimes you don't know what you truly love until you
try it. Remember, you can always repurpose your content, so
that blog post it can become a podcast script or
an Instagram caption and that YouTube video you can snip
it into reels or stories. So just play around with
(09:35):
your content until you feel super confident and comfortable with
where you are. And again, I can't reiterate this enough,
but the freedom to pivot is everything, and you do
have that freedom. You can make the changes you need
to make on the fly. Even there's so much freedom
in your solopreneur journey. And because you're not doing your
(09:56):
journey anybody else's way, but you're doing it your way,
it makes it all the more awesome for you and
for those listening and watching and being exposed to who
you are. It's just a beautiful process, not only to
create on the creative end, but for those who are
watching and are on the other end of the stick.
They are the customer. They are your client, they are
(10:19):
your viewer, they're your audience. They love you, and so
what you're bringing to the table to them is making
a big difference in their lives and so they really
don't mind flowing with you. So if you want to
switch your content types and you are not feeling that
the podcast is where you want to continue putting your
energy into, then it's okay. Let your audience know that
(10:41):
you're switching to videos. Let them know that you're going
to be creating blogs and a newsletter, and that's how
they'll be in touch with you. So just be in
touch with your audience and engage with them and let
them know when you do have to make a pivot,
that you are changing gears and that they can follow
you somewhere else. You have the freedom to play around
and move things around your business as you wish. And
(11:01):
then I want you to factor in your resources. So
let's talk some real talk, my friend. Your budget and
your time are big players in your decision. For example,
blogging requires minimal tools. You need a laptop and you
need a hosting platform. That's just about it. Really. As
(11:21):
long as you can Google and use chat, GPT and
anything else that can help you come up with fresh
ideas for your blog posts, you don't really need much else.
But with podcasting you do need a little bit more.
For example, what you'll need is a microphone and editing software.
So that's going to cost a little bit. That's going
(11:42):
to tap into your budget a bit more. And if
you're using video to reach your audience, well, the investment
can go as deep as your wallet allows. There's all
kinds of gadgets for your YouTube channel that you can
buy into and you don't need it all, but the
temptation is definitely there to get better and go bigger.
(12:04):
So I'll tell you what I use for my channel. Currently,
I'm using my phone and a ring light and I'm
editing on Adobe Premiere. That's all I'm doing. In Adobe Premiere.
There are all sorts of options for changing the way
your video looks, so you know, getting that cinematic appeal,
or changing some of the hues and the color hues
(12:28):
and all of the little things that go with video editing.
And I'm just playing around with Adobe Premiere. I don't
really know it that well. I know it well enough
to cut and paste and add an intro and outro
and just pretty much edit the sound and some of
those things, but as far as the more technical color grading,
I'm just learning how to do some of that stuff.
(12:50):
So it's really all playing around for me and figuring
out what looks good and how to add things in
and save it and export in the formats that I
want and the false that I want. This is all
just learning on the spot and learning as I'm working,
you know, learning as I go. So I don't consider
myself an expert in all of these things. But I
(13:10):
did have to take time, which is a commodity, you know.
I had to take my time to learn these things.
Also had to put some money into it, because Adobe
Premiere is not free. The Adobe Creative Cloud is a
monthly subscription. And then of course, like I said, I
have my iPhone and then I have a ring light
that I paid for. But that's about it. Now. If
(13:30):
I wanted to go bigger and better, I could buy
expensive lenses and I could have even more ring lights,
or I could you know, tap into some other editing
software as well, such as descript or riverside. There's all
kinds of things that I can do. But this is
how I'm doing it. And for my podcast it's a
little bit different. You know. All I've invested in is
(13:52):
a nice microphone. So today I'm using a blue Yetti
and in the past I was using a Sure S
and fifty eight and those were my initial investments. And again,
I have my laptop and I have internet access, so
I mean, what else do I need, really, and besides
my podcast hosting, And so when you factor in your
resources and see exactly what you need. The good news
(14:14):
is that you don't need fancy tools to start. When
you figure out exactly what you need, then it helps
you to lay that foundation for where you're going in
your business. So you're not scattered and attempting to buy
any and everything. You know what you need, the basics,
and you just get started. And that way there's nothing
holding you back and there's really no blockage to your
(14:37):
getting where you need to go. You don't need fancy
tools to start. Your phone is your best friend. So
I've created great content with nothing more than just my phone,
a ring light, and some editing apps and this blue
Yetti microphone and of course my podcast hosting and YouTube.
That's really all I need. So factor in your resources
and this is going to help you figure out where
(15:00):
you're going and what kind of content you're more likely
to create and that you're willing to create. And my
last step for you is to align with your business goals.
Think about your goals. Do you want to drive traffic
to your website? Is that a goal that you have.
Is your website a part of your strategy? It should be, probably,
but it may not be the number one strategy you
(15:22):
have right now. So think about what is your biggest goal.
And if driving traffic to your website is your main goal,
then blogging an SEO might be your best bet. But
if you just want to build trust and connect more
on a personal level with your audience, then video or
podcasting might be the way to go. And don't forget
(15:43):
your content should serve your lifestyle. So if you're a
busy mama or you're balancing a full time job and
you're just doing this solopreneur thing on the side creating
your content as part of your side hustle, then your
content should most definitely serve your lifestyle, and you need
to choose something that fits your schedule. So maybe that's
(16:05):
audio over video because it's easier to do audio sometimes,
or maybe it's shorter written pieces instead of long drawn
out blog posts. It's whatever fits your needs in the moment.
So I have started doing something recently, which is creating
a little homework assignment for you at the end of
each podcast, just because I think it's a nice way
(16:27):
for you to be able to package everything I've said
on a show and put it into action for the week.
So I'm going to give you a little homework this week,
and if you decide that you want to do this,
I'd love to hear back from you on my YouTube channel.
Just go ahead and add a message or a comment
underneath this episode on YouTube. So your homework for the
week is to reflect on what you love to create,
(16:50):
what excites you the most. I want you to really
think through this process. And then the second thing I
want you to do is think about where your audience
spends their time. So is your audience on YouTube, is
your audience on Instagram? Figure out where they're hanging out.
And then the third thing is to experiment with one
content type this week. Just one, just one. That's all
(17:11):
you need to do. If you can just do one
content type, then it's a stepping stone to being able
to create all types of content in the future. Because
remember we said that we start with one and then
we diversify later. So i'd love to hear what you
decided to do. You can either, like I said earlier,
leave me a message on YouTube or leave me on
(17:32):
DM on Instagram, any way that you feel best to
get in touch with me. I'd love to hear from you.
Let me know what content type you're diving into this
week and how it feels to you. Thank you so
much for hanging out with me today, my friend. Don't
forget to subscribe to the podcast and you can do
that in Apple Podcasts. You can also check out my
YouTube channel at Dimitrio Zinca for more tips on living
(17:54):
the solopreneur lifestyle. And until next time, keep creating, keep shining,
and keep elevating your business. Talk to you soon and
to your online business success.
