I had the pleasure of sitting with two surgeons from the NeuroSpine Institute, Dr Michael Kern and Dr Paul Taylor, covering their unique professional insights as well as personal experiences.
Did you know 1 in 6 to 1 in 4 Australians report having back problems. Lower back pain is the most common muscle skeletal complaint seen in general practice in Australia! A significant portion of these individuals with lower back pain, 10 to 40%, developing persistent disabling symptoms.
Given these statistics, I think it’s clear to say the significance of the work Dr Taylor and Dr Kern are doing. This is why I am excited to share this conversation with you!
Firstly I will introduce Dr Michael Kern. Michael was born and grew up in Neckarsulm, a small town in Southern Germany.Michael undertook post fellowship training in spine surgery, paediatric and epilepsy surgery at the Westmead Hospitals in Sydney. He specialises in surgery for brain tumours.
Secondly, Dr Paul Taylor, an experienced spinal surgeon. Paul has extensive training in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgery, both gained in Australia and internationally. Alongside Paul’s surgical experience he has had an exciting journey through joining the British Army as a Paratrooper and being deployed during the Rwandan massacre in 1994. Before the Australian Army then recruited him to command the Parachute Surgical Team. Which allowed him to gain citizenship and stay in Perth, his home ever since.
My conversation with Dr Michael Kern and Dr Paul Taylor at the Neurospine Institute, provided first hand insight to the passion and driving forces shown within Neurospine institute and the initiatives they are delivering to empower and support patients in their journey.
I am excitement for what’s to come within this surgical space and the changes patients will experience. It is humbling and refreshing talking to specialists who value the work they do and constantly look to make positive and profound changes. Overall, there is a huge amount of value everyone can gain from listening to our conversation.
