Sobrevoando o lago ressecado de Murac na Califórnia, ele atinge uma velocidade de Mach 1,06. Mas seu recorde não foi homologado pelo fato que seu avião não havia decolado por seus próprios meios e sim de um bombardeiro B 29 para poder economizar combustível.
