(00:02):
On this episode, let's talk about root awareness, what that
is, how to utilize it to have better sexual health and stamina
and strength. This is the Holistic Alpha Male
Optimization podcast where we help you unleash your true power
as a man. Hey guys, welcome back to the

(00:26):
show. I'm Steven Mathis.
Thanks for being here with me. Let's talk about our root, a
root muscle. First of all, what is that?
What am I even talking about? I know there's absolutely going
to be some of you guys who are like, what the hell are you
talking about? What I'm talking about is our
pelvic floor, right? The muscles that make up our
pelvic floor. This is a very, very important

(00:46):
part of our body, not only for our sexuality, but in a lot of
ways it is kind of the foundation of our body.
If we look at the the trunk partof our body, what joins that
with the lower part of our body and what really forms the floor
of the trunk of our body is our pelvic floor, right?
This is a very, very important part of our body.

(01:06):
And energetically it is also really our energetic foundation.
It's our energetic root in a lotof ways.
So that's why I like to think about it as our root.
First of all, it's a lot easier to say and think about root
versus pelvic floor. And it doesn't sound quite so
clinical, but I also think energetically, if we think
about, you know, if you're watching video or if you're not,

(01:28):
I'm surrounded by trees at the moment.
And in a lot of ways we're just really fancy plants.
And one of the ways that we're kind of like that is we have a
route, right? We have this energetic route
that connects us to source. It connects us to source energy.
So with a tree, it has these physical roots that stretch out
into the ground and connect it with source energy, with the

(01:50):
nutrients that it needs. One of our roots is actually our
pelvic floor. So that is our root muscle.
If you've been listening to the show for a while, you know that
I often call it that. If you haven't been familiar
with that, you know, going forward, let's talk about root
awareness and why it is so important to have root awareness
in order to improve our sexual health.

(02:12):
And not only our sexual health, but actually just that the
health of that part of our body independent of sort of a sexual
stimulation, arousal kind of part of that.
Because it is very important to maintain the health of that part
of our body for a number of reasons, including things down
the road like urinary incontinence and all these other
things. But energetically also when our

(02:32):
pelvic floor, when our root is healthy and when energy is
flowing through our root freely, and when we have a root that is
strong yet relaxed, we're strongyet relaxed, energy flows
through us. And when our root is tight, when
there's a lot of tension and stagnation there creates tension
and stagnation in our entire being and certainly in our

(02:55):
sexuality. So if you have struggled with
premature ejaculation, you almost certainly have some
tension in your root that would be really good to get rid of.
You may also benefit from strengthening your root muscle
and certainly if you have ever wanted to have better erections,
if you want your libido, your drive to be better,
strengthening your root is absolutely an important part of

(03:18):
that because when you have a strong root physically, you'll
have a strong root energetically.
And the reverse is true as well. One of the reasons I'm convinced
and I don't have data studies toback this up.
I'm convinced based on my understanding that one of the
reasons that guys erections tendto get worse as they age is
because the muscular weakness that we experience as we age

(03:41):
throughout our body. If we don't counteract that,
that starts to happen in our in our root muscle as well.
And I call it our root muscle. Just a reminder, it's a whole
bunch of muscles. We don't need to get super
technical. We can just think about our root
muscle. And by the way, let's take a
quick moment and clarify how to feel this right.
If we're going to have awareness, which we'll talk
about a little bit more in a moment, how to practice that and

(04:01):
how exactly it plays into havinga relaxed muscle, a strong root
muscle. First of all, how do you feel
this? If you squeeze to stop the flow
of urine, if you squeeze midstream when you're peeing,
you're squeezing your root muscle, you're doing a root
squeeze. If you were to try to kind of
push out, like to pee harder or faster or push out a fart, kind

(04:23):
of that push kind of action thatis a root push.
And then in the middle is this relaxed kind of state.
So I know a lot of you guys are familiar with your root.
If you're not, that's how to find it.
And let's talk about becoming even more familiar with it and
having better awareness of it. Because the better awareness you
have of it, the more you can guide it with your intention to

(04:45):
be healthy and strong and relaxed.
And most guys, in my experience and conversations that I've had
and I know where I came from, most guys are kind of
disconnected from their root. Like, yes, it's part of us and
it affects us and we're used to all, if I have to pee really
bad, I can probably feel that squeezing and holding.
I can feel the squeezing and pumping when I ejaculate.
I can make a baby feel it squeezing when I get an erection

(05:07):
or aroused, those kind of things.
But there's not really a consciousness and awareness of
it for a lot of guys. And I know there wasn't for me
for a lot of years. This comes from one simple
thing, which is practicing bringing our awareness to that
part of our body. Just checking in, the more often
you check in mentally with your awareness with this part of your

(05:30):
body. And you can do this with like a
little background part of your awareness.
It doesn't have to take the, it's not like you have to stop
whatever you're doing to do this.
You can do this as you live yourlife and kind of have this
background awareness where you check in a little bit with your
root. And when you check in, what I
would suggest is just listen, check in and listen and pay

(05:50):
attention to, oh, was there sometension there and I can release
it. The vast majority of the time,
that's going to be the case if you can't really feel your route
at all. And for a lot of guys, in the
beginning, especially if you're working on sort of strengthening
your libido, getting away maybe from the effects of porn or the
effects of excessive ejaculationor whatever, a lot of guys don't

(06:10):
really have a major awareness ofthis muscle, even when they they
get it when they can, you know, when they stop peeing midstream,
they understand. Yeah, that's my root, but
there's not really an awareness of it.
And if that's the case, it's likely because it needs to be
strengthened because when it is very weak, you're not really
going to feel a lot there. The stronger it gets, the more

(06:32):
you're going to be aware of thisstrength and potency that is
there and this muscle or these group of muscles that are there.
So when you check in on a regular basis with your root and
you listen, you're going to learn stuff, right?
What you're probably going to learn is that you have some
tension for sure. And that likely throughout the
day, you're probably quite oftencarrying a little bit of kind of

(06:56):
a squeeze. And that is one of the reasons
why a lot of guys will struggle with premature ejaculation is
because there's this inherent built in kind of bias towards
that squeezing and pumping because we're constantly
carrying that throughout the day.
When this when that carrying of a little bit of squeeze becomes
a lot of squeeze. And when it becomes more

(07:16):
extreme, it can really create significant problems and
significant really health issueswhere tension builds up to such
a degree that it not only causespremature ejaculation that's
like out of control, but it can really cause pain and discomfort
and a lot of issues. So relaxing our root muscles
very, very important. So the primary thing that I

(07:37):
would suggest as a response, most of the time when we connect
is in the moment, relax. But then bigger picture, when we
connect and we listen, we're going to be able to tune into,
OK, how strong does my root really feel?
Is it really strong and do I have a really good control of
it? Can I squeeze it, push it, relax
it, squeeze it, push it, relax it and be exactly where I want

(07:58):
to be at any place along that scale at any moment in time, no
matter what is going on, no matter what stimulation is
happening, no matter where I am on the arousal scale.
Do you have that kind of controlof your root muscle and is it
very, very strong where you can feel?
I mean, if you've exercised and you've trained, you've lifted
weights, whatever, anything thatyou've done, you can feel when
you get stronger, when somethinggets stronger, it's like there

(08:20):
more, you know, you get maybe like you think of a post workout
pump, that feeling of being veryconsciously aware of that muscle
being there. Do you have that with your root
muscle? If you don't have that, it
probably could stand to get stronger.
Speaking of getting stronger, the way to get stronger with
your root muscle fundamentally is to practice squeezes.

(08:41):
So practicing squeezes might look like very intentional
practice. Where you use an A like on iOS,
there's an A called stamina STAMENA.
Basically, it's just timing different lengths of holds on
the squeeze side as well as the push.
And so practicing and working with your root muscle might look
like something like that. You might even do it throughout

(09:03):
the day. So for example, let's say you're
practicing your root awareness throughout the day.
You check in and yes, you realize, OK, there's a little
bit of relaxation, but maybe youtake a moment right then to do
two or three or four or five reps of strong squeezes and then
you go back to that very intentional relaxation.
You might also incorporate it while you're training.
I would very much suggest that when you're lifting weights,

(09:27):
doing any kind of exercise, thisis the energetic floor of your
body. It is also very, very important
from a core strength and stability kind of standpoint.
Your pelvic floor really is the root of that as well.
So if you look at something likePilates, there is a very
intentional teaching and practicing in Pilates of

(09:48):
engaging the pelvic floor, the root, right?
So it is very important and beneficial from actually the
standpoint of getting better results when you're training of
being stronger, being more stable, of having stronger
energy because that floor of your energy is stronger.
But that's also a great time to get stronger, to get your root

(10:09):
muscle stronger by incorporatingthose squeezes into your
physical training, your edging practice as well is going to
increase the strength of your root and certainly the
connection with your root and your awareness of it if you're
doing so in a mindful way. So if you're edging and you're
not really paying attention to that at all and you're not

(10:29):
really checking in with it, thenmaybe it's going to get
stronger, maybe you're going to get better control, maybe you
won't. You might actually get a little
bit worse in terms of the control side because you're not
really guiding it. A lot of guys, especially when
they first start edging, if theydon't have some kind of guidance
otherwise we'll get any pattern of sort of squeezing that root
muscle throughout their practiceto some degree or another.

(10:52):
Whereas we want to actually be almost the opposite of that.
We want to be most of the time in a relaxed state or as often
as possible, not only throughoutthe day, but in or edging
practice insects as well. And then in very specific
intentional moments, then we're using that squeeze to draw that
energy up. So it's throughout the day,
having awareness of it, relaxingit, practicing squeezes.

(11:15):
You might use something like a timer app for and you can look
up if you're on Android or if you're on iOS, you can look at
Kegel training apps. One thing to be aware of whether
you're using an app or you're just doing training throughout
the day is we do want to train both sides.
So from an intentional exercise kind of standpoint, we want to
train the squeeze side as well as the push.

(11:37):
One note on that, on the squeezeside, we want to be in essence
stronger and stronger. As long as we can come back to a
place of relaxation on the push side, there's really no reason
to be real strong and forceful with that at all.
It's more of a, we just want to be able to engage that and
engage it on a regular basis. So practicing a bit of a push
and a bit of a, a strength in that just a moderate amount can

(12:01):
be beneficial. So again, whether it's
throughout the day, it's in youredging practice, it's when
you're training, it's when you're having sex, whatever else
you're doing, the more often youcan become aware of what is
going on with your root and thenguide it with intention to a
place of relaxation, to a place of intentional strength in the
right moments. When you choose to engage that

(12:22):
strength, the healthier you're going to get your pelvic floor
from a, you know, clinical kind of standpoint in terms of
urinary incontinence and all of those things and avoiding excess
tension. You're going to be healthier
from that standpoint. If you're listening, you're
checking in, you're paying attention, you're guiding what
is happening in your root musclewith awareness.
And yes, you're absolutely goingto start to have much better

(12:43):
sex. You can increase your libido,
improve your erection quality, reduce premature ejaculation.
So much of all three of those things actually are based in a
better, healthier, more connected root muscle that we
are more aware of, that is both more relaxed and stronger that
we have absolute control of the connection with.

(13:05):
It doesn't do its own thing, that doesn't have a mind of its
own. That's being led by our
intention. That is a very, very important
foundation to having better sex in all the ways.
So pay attention to your root, be aware of your root, guide it
with intention. I would love to hear your
feedback, your questions, your thoughts.
