Hey friends, welcome back toHolly's Highlights.
I am so glad you're here.
So let me start today with aquestion.
Have you ever had one of thosedays where you just thought,
this will just take a fewminutes?
And then suddenly it's hourslater, and you're wondering
where your day went.
Yeah, that was me recently.
Let me tell you what happened.
I needed to pick up a simpleprescription for my vet.

(02:33):
I called ahead, I thought I'djust run in real quickly, maybe
two minutes tops, grab it and beout before closing.
Easy, right?
Except it wasn't.
I got caught up with otherthings, and I ended up arriving
right after closing time.
I was too late.
And instead of just grabbing theprescription and heading home, I
then had to drive to theemergency vet hospital across

(02:55):
town to get the refill.
Now here's where it reallyspirals.
I walk in expecting it to bequick.
After all, this is just arefill, and they were the ones
to originally prescribe it.
But as they checked me in andjust said, it'll just be a few
minutes, those seem to be theirfamous last words.
I ended up waiting in that vethospital for well over two full

(03:17):
hours.
Over two hours just for a couplebottles of pills.
And let me tell you, I wentthrough all the emotions.
Frustration, annoyance,self-blame.
I kept thinking if I had onlyleft 15 minutes earlier, I had
things to do, dinner to make, emails to send, my son to pick
up from an event, and a millionother little things tugging at

(03:39):
me.
But then something happened.
I sat there, quiet, still, andit hit me.
This is life.
We think we're in control.
We think we're on schedule.
And then suddenly we're waiting.
And more often than not, thosewaiting times, they're the
moments when God is trying toteach us something.

(04:02):
So let's talk about waiting.
Did you know that a Timex surveyshows that the average person
spends about six months of theirlife waiting in line and over
two years on hold with customerservice?
Two years.
Waiting is part of the humanexperience.
And yet it's something we alltry to avoid.

(04:23):
We distract ourselves, rushahead, we even get angry when
life hits the brakes.
But what if waiting wasn't awaste?
What if it was actually doingsomething?
Well, today I want to walkthrough those three truths about
waiting that just might changehow we see it.
The first one, waiting revealsour character.

(04:45):
Let's be honest, most of usdon't like who we become in
waiting rooms, whether it's intraffic, at the DMV, or even
waiting on a dream to come true.
We tend to get impatient andeven short-tempered, even
bitter.

But here's the thing (04:58):
waiting reveals what's already inside
us.
Our small frustrations intraffic might actually mirror
how we handle the bigger delaysin life.
Are we quick to complain?
Do we default to control mode, trying to force things?
Or can we sit in the pause andtrust that something good is

(05:19):
being worked out?
As Aristotle once said, patienceis bitter, but its fruit is
sweet.
And Leo Tolstoy, the two mostpowerful warriors are patience
and time.
And of course, the scripturesays, Isaiah 40, 31, but they
that wait upon the Lord shallrenew their strength, they shall

(05:39):
mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
Waiting isn't weakness, it'srefining.
Number two, waiting buildsstrength.
Think about how muscles grow.
They don't grow when we'recomfortable sitting there on the
couch all kicked back, they growunder resistance.

(06:02):
The same is true for ourspiritual and emotional muscles.
Waiting stretches us.
But in the stretching, we'realso being strengthened.
There's actual science behindthis too.
Research from psychologists showthat learning to practice
patience doesn't just improveyour relationships, it reduces
stress and it increaseslong-term life satisfaction.

(06:22):
Pretty wild, right?
So that delay, that season whereit feels like nothing's
happening, it might just be yourtraining ground.
And number three, waitingredirects our focus.
Now, back to my story, sittingin the vet hospital, feeling
helpless and annoyed.
There was literally nothing Icould do to speed up the

(06:43):
process.
But I realized I could choosewhat I focused on.
I had a couple of choices.
I could sit there scrollingendlessly, numbing the
frustration, okay, until mybattery died in my phone.
Or I could choose to be present.
I could reflect.
I could even pray.
That latter one, that's what Ichose.
I prayed for my dog.
I prayed for my kids, my family,my friends, some coworkers.

(07:06):
You see, waiting slows us downjust enough to notice what we
usually miss.
The people around us, the quietvoice of God, our own thoughts
and hearts.
Psalms 46, 10 says, Be still andknow that I am God.
Stillness doesn't comenaturally, but when life makes

(07:28):
us wait, it's often aninvitation to rediscover it.
So here's the question I want toask you today.
What's your waiting room rightnow?
Maybe it's a a job you'veapplied for, but you haven't
heard back.
Maybe it's a relationship thathasn't quite come together.
Maybe it's a prayer that feelslike it's hanging in the air

(07:50):
unanswered.
What if, just what if, thiswaiting season, it's not
punishment.
What if it's preparation?
So let's look at three simpleways to reframe the next time
we're feeling stuck waiting.
First off, ask, what is thismoment teaching me?

(08:10):
So instead of the frustration, choose curiosity.
Two, equip yourself for thewait.
Carry a small journal, save ascripture card in your wallet,
download a podcast episodeyou've been meaning to listen
to.
Um, Holly's Highlights podcast,perhaps.
But use that time for somethingthat feeds your soul.
I actually keep a book on handin the car, in my work bag, in

(08:33):
the hospital go bag, you nameit.
I have a book there.
And then three, don't waste thewaiting.
Use it.
Growth doesn't come from speed,it comes from presence.
So be present in the pause.
Now, as we wrap up, let me askyou again: what's one waiting
room that you're in right now?
And I'd love to hear from you.

(08:54):
Send me a message at hello athollykirby.com or drop a comment
on the post promoting thisepisode on Facebook, which is at
Holly's Highlights, or onInstagram, which is at Holly
Kirby.
What is your waiting seasonteaching you?
And remember, Exodus 14, 14, theLord will fight for you.
You only need to be still.

(09:16):
Friend, don't despise thewaiting rooms of life.
They're not wasted.
They're where purpose is forged.
Thanks for spending theseminutes with me today.
If this encouraged you, share itwith a friend who just might be
in their own waiting room rightnow.
Until next time, stay faithful, stay present, and trust that God
is at work in your paws.

(09:40):
Thank you for joining me on thisjourney of life.

and equipping so you can go outand live your life full of
purpose.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
