Thank you, and thank you forlistening to and sharing with
others Holly's Holites podcast.
Hi friends, I recently surviveda month where the aftermath left
me well completelysleep-deprived.
I was lacking social engagement, such as lunch out with my
friends and even getting to dothings with my family that we

(01:29):
enjoy, such as going to the newmovie release of Twisters and
even getting to attend church onSundays.
Now, the result of all of this?
I found myself getting reallygrumpy.
Now grumpiness can look likedifferent things and different
people being moody, irritable, frustrated or, for some, even
anger can present itself.
Now, of course, we've all heardit before as to what to do to

(01:52):
avoid being grumpy.
For some, it's things such asavoiding alcohol, caffeine and
other stimulants, whether thatbe drugs, tobacco, et cetera.
Most of us, it's going to begetting more sleep.
And then there's theidentifying what makes you
grumpy, so those triggers or anypatterns you have, and to do
that you can either journal orsimply make a mental note.
And then, of course, that whenthese triggers happen, to do

(02:16):
what helps you so, such asremoving yourself from the
situation or focusing on yourbreathing.
For some it's meditation, beingalone, listening to music,
talking to friends, taking awalk, reading.
I personally enjoy spending timein God's Word.
Now, some scriptures that helpme is, first of all, philippians

(02:36):
2.3,.
Do nothing out of selfishambition or vain conceit, but in
humility consider others betterthan yourself.
And Proverbs 11, 25,.
The generous will prosper.
Those who refresh others willthemselves be refreshed.
These remind me to focus onothers, not on myself or
whatever is making me grumpy.

(02:56):
The second one I like to lookat is Psalms 46, 10, be still
and know I am God, which simplyreminds me to stop to sit and
just allow my entire being tosimply be still, something that
is often against our very go-go.
Take action, nature right.
And then the third is Romans 6,12, do not let sin control the

(03:20):
way you live.
And Ephesians 4, 26,.
In your anger, do not sin.
Do not let the sun go downwhile you're still angry, and do
not give the devil a foothold.
These remind me that, whateveremotion I'm feeling, not to give
way to it or to where ittravels down a path of sin, and
definitely not to let Satan havean opportunity to use it.

(03:41):
Now one thing to clearlyunderstand and remind ourselves
here emotions can be healthy andnormal.
We do have to learn how torecognize, to process and handle
our emotions.
Though In the movie Snow Whitewe're introduced to seven dwarfs
, can you name them?
Okay, here we go One, two, three, four, five, six and seven

(04:10):
.
Okay, we'll see how you did.
But have you ever wondered why?
They're all representative ofemotions, feelings and even
qualities that we can have inlife.
Well, an article ingeeksforgeeksorg breaks it down.
So here we go, let's see howyou did.
First one, doc, who was wise.
The second one, happy, who wasjoyfully optimistic.

(04:32):
That third one is Sleepy, well, just that, a slumbering dwarf.
The fourth one, bashful, who'sshy and timid.
Fifth one, sneezy, the dwarfwith a perpetual cold.
The sixth one, dopey, thesilent yet expressive dwarf.
And, of course, that seventhone, grumpy, the cantacruz,
contrarian.

(04:53):
Well, 78 years later, moviessuch as Inside Out are still
having main characters basedaround joy, fear, anger, disgust
, sadness, for the intent, asABC News puts it, that all
emotions are valid and serve apurpose.
So how do we recognize, processand even handle such emotions

(05:15):
purposefully?
Well, first step, recognizethat we go through different
seasons of life and with thoseseasons of life, it is okay to
not be okay.
Listen to that again it is okayto not be okay.
Keep in mind that it's justthat, though it's a season.
So often people walk throughlife trying to push aside a

(05:39):
feeling.
They tell themselves it's notokay, or they shouldn't feel
that way, or they might eventhink such feelings make them
feel weak or less than, or theyrun to go, get help to this
feeling is wrong, my friend.
Recognize it and give yourselfpermission to feel it.
It is perfectly healthy to feelthe emotions that we feel.

(06:01):
So recognize the emotion thatyou're currently walking through
.
The second step is going to beprocessing the emotion.
You know our core memories, ourexperiences in life, even fears
, insecurities and dreams.
They're all going to play partin contributing to the emotions

(06:22):
we feel in the various seasons, the depth of that emotion and
even the temptations as to whatto do with that emotion.
Now avoid the comparison of howothers around you deal with the
emotions or even what thatemotion looks like for them,
because you're each coming fromdifferent viewpoints, paths that
led you to where you are todayand even purposes for walking

(06:44):
through the emotion that you'refeeling.
The purpose is not to not feelthe emotion, but rather we can,
as 2 Corinthians 10, 5 says, take captive our every thought
and make it obedient to Christ.
We can ask ourselves why do Ifeel this way, or what led to
feeling this way?
What do I need to do as aresult of feeling this way, or

(07:04):
even, do I need to do anythingas a result of feeling this way?
So, once you've recognized itnow process it.
The third step handle theemotion.
Now, while it's perfectlyhealthy to let yourself feel the
feels, so to speak, it's okayto speak up and even ask for
help too.
Now my kids have heard me saybefore I just need a little

(07:27):
mommy timeout, and my prayerwarriors have received numerous
texts of prayer, hand emojisasking them for prayer.
They don't need to know all thespecifics or even the emotion,
necessarily, but they can knowI'm asking for them to just stop
and lift me up in prayer.
Just having someone to reachout to can make a world of
difference.
So build your network.
You're heard, as you've heardme say before and in my book

(07:49):
Facelift.
Have those around you that youcan go to, that you can trust
and they're there to be able toreach out to when you need to.
My dad used to advise peoplethat he'd counsel to even write
a letter.
Write a letter with all youremotions and your feels.
Just don't send it to anyone.
Often, being able to just getthings off of our chest can help

(08:11):
us recognize, process andhandle the emotions we're
feeling.
Now, this is often why peoplechoose to journal and remember
how we handle.
The emotion will lookdifferently for each of us, and
that's okay too.
So if you're not a journaler,that's okay.
There's other ways, right?
The key is to handle theemotion in a way that doesn't
cause you or others harm andthat is healthy in the long run.

(08:34):
Don't allow yourself to sit inthem up too long, though.
That's where we can spiral downa slippery slope into woe, is
me, depression and other depths.
Rather, recognizing, processingand then handling the emotion
allows us to keep putting onefoot forward in front of the
other, making progress, allowingthe emotions to build our
character, and forward in frontof the other, making progress,
allowing the emotions to buildour character and develop

(08:56):
perseverance and have a healthy,well-balanced outlook on life.
Emotions and all this can oftenbe what trips some parents up.
They don't allow their childrento either experience emotions
so that helicopter parent or,worse yet, they don't allow them
to learn how to process andpush forward through the various
emotions.

(09:16):
Emotions are a part of life andthey are a part of growth, and
they're also a part of buildingus as a healthy individual.
So will I stay in the grumpiesforever?
No, it's just a season.
But having the grumpies doesallow me to appreciate the
emotion of joy even more, and itallows me to not only count my

(09:36):
blessings, so to have gratitude, but also be mindful of others
around me and sensitive to theiremotions too.
As American football widereceiver Josh Gordon said, I am
a human being with feelings andemotions, scars and flaws, just
like everyone else.
Now a little caveat here ifyou're recognizing, processing
and handling your emotions isjust still feeling like a

(09:59):
daunting task, feel free toreach out to your local
resources, whether that be afamily member, teacher, church
leader, resources for your jobor, if you've used all of those,
even a counselor.
Focusonthefamilycom offers manyfree resources thanks to their
generous donor support.

in, whatever emotion you'reexperiencing, recognize it,

enjoy the journey you're on.
