in such ways.
Happy New Year's, my friends.
Well, is everyone ready for abig football game this weekend?
I know my son's team is playingfor the third year in a row, so
if you have any guesses as towho he is rooting for.

(01:25):
But of course, there is a lotof excitement going on in our
house, with some rivalry.
Let's say, we're alreadyprepping decor and food and
getting the invites out for theparty.
Now if your team is playing, chances are you're pretty stoked
to cheer them on, but most ofus gather simply for the
fellowship, the food and, ofcourse, those commercials.

(01:47):
Now, if looking for a goodrecipe, I welcome you to join my
monthly email over onwwwhollykirbycom.
That's H-O-L-L-Y-C-U-R-B-Ycom.
I send out an email everysingle month and one of the
things that is in that is ayummy recipe related to that
month.
So head over there, as thatemail will be coming out here

(02:09):
shortly this week.
But in addition to all thepregame fun and for many post
game celebrations, there areactually a few takeaways we can
learn as leaders from this biggame coming up.
Number one don't let thingsoverwhelm you.
You know some things we canschedule out, but there will be

(02:30):
critical decisions we need tomake, quick thinking that often
will need to come into play, which we just can't plan for,
and a lot of pressure we'regoing to face.
But don't let it overwhelm you.
Plan for as much as you can, prepare the best that you can
and this often even includes theworst case and the best case

(02:53):
scenarios, or in case ofemergency planning too and then
prioritize for it.
We can often remove a lot ofthe pressure or factors that can
overwhelm us, simply byprioritizing for the task at
hand, such as I only schedule somany speaking engagements
during a certain period of timeso that I don't overwhelm my

(03:14):
family life dynamics.
Same thing goes for work.
If I have a big event coming up, I prioritize that and plan the
days leading up to and daysafter accordingly, so that I
don't overwhelm my team.
So plan for what you canprepare, how you can, and then
prioritize where you can.

(03:36):
Second tip have a positiveattitude.
Henry Ford said whether youthink you can or you can't,
you're right.
Be optimistic, be positive.
Tips to accomplish this caninclude picturing yourself
having a positive outcome, removing negative talk and
thoughts that go through ourheads, so don't even allow them

(03:57):
to cross your lips or your mind.
Goes to that scripture versetake captive your every thought
and make it obedient to the Lord.
Same thing here Remove thosethoughts, remove whatever might
be tempted to come out of yourmouth and then doing things or
putting up reminders to you thatwill help you accomplish this
mindset and attitude.
For some this may be scriptureverses, others it's quotes.

(04:21):
For me, it's encouraging notesfrom my children and my family
as leaders.
We's quotes.
For me, it's encouraging notesfrom my children and my family.
As leaders, we have influence,so those we lead are going to
follow the tone we set.
So what you do will reflect onwhat your culture is going to
look like, what mindset you wantyour team to have, what image
you want your company to reflect.

(04:41):
It all starts with you and yourattitude how you're going to
lead by example in having thatpositive mindset.
Number three be open to growingfrom those around you.
Now my son has a saying abovehis desk at home that reads be
strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you

(05:03):
need help and brave enough toask for it.
We have opportunities to learnfrom failures, to learn from
successes, to learn from coachesin life, as well as learn from
our own team.
But too often we can misslearning and growing
opportunities because we aren'topen to them, or we aren't
watching for them, or we have apreconceived limitation as to

(05:28):
who we can learn from or what wecan learn.
We do not want to be thesmartest person at the table or
in the room.
Surround yourself with thosewho you can learn from.
Be open to what you can learnthroughout each and every part
of your day, especially thoseunexpected encounters.

(05:49):
Once again, others are watchingus to see if we have humility
to admit when we are wrong, openness to be vulnerable with
our struggles, and even if wehave a growth mindset, by being
teachable by young and old, experienced and non-experienced
in our profession or out of ourprofession.
Educated, uneducated, be opento growing from those around you

(06:14):
each and every day.
Number four communicate,communicate, communicate.
Now, research shows that ittakes someone hearing something
seven times before it finally isingrained in them.
We can never over communicate, but we can easily under
communicate, and there'll bedifferent ways in which we need

(06:36):
to communicate too, fromdifferent learning styles to
even what we're expressingneeding to be done so in a
different manner.
It's like the definition ofinsanity doing the same thing
again and again, yet expectingdifferent results.
Sometimes we need to change theway we're doing it in order to
achieve the success or that endresult that we're hoping for.

(06:57):
So communicate a lot, in manydifferent ways and even
repetitively.
And number five be resilient.
When we fall or fail, get backup and try again.
We have sayings all over ourhome that have helped us

(07:18):
persevere things in life For mydaughters.
She believed she could, so shedid sign that she reflected on
years ago during a tough season,we can do hard things which is
framed as an image that my sonused to get his homework done
during COVID and still sits onhis desk A sign my mom made for

(07:38):
me that still sits on my kitchentable proclaiming I refuse to
sink To, even bracelets ourwhole family wore during my
dad's cancer treatments,reminding us of Philippians 4.13
, I can do all things throughChrist, who strengthens me.
Having grit and determination, finding what motivates or
inspires you to keep going, allcombined with flexibility and

(08:01):
patience and coping skills, theycan help us be resilient in
whatever comes our way.
Don't let things overwhelm us.
Choose to have a positiveattitude, be open to growing
from those around us,communicate, communicate,
communicate and show that youare resilient.

(08:23):
As head coach Green Bay Packers, vince Lombardi, said, leaders
are made.
They are not born.
They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of
us must pay to achieve any goalthat is worthwhile.
If you will not settle foranything less than your best,
you'll be amazed at what you canaccomplish.

(08:45):
Here's to the leadershipchampion in you Go, get them.
Thank you for joining me onthis journey of life.
I hope that today's highlighthas been encouraging, inspiring
and equipping so you can go outand live your life full of
purpose.
