On February 19, 2024, I went for a routine, screening mammogram. That evening, I got a fax report that changed my life. I had a breast mass. Fast forward, my mass was triple receptor positive and I needed chemo, then surgery, radiation, a year of targeted therapy and then 5-10 years of estrogen suppressive therapy.
When Carrie and I started this podcast, I had already been through 2 cycles of chemotherapy. At that point, I was still feeling like I could keep up my usual pace. For those of you who don't know me--I'm typically the energizer bunny. Truth be told, my brain thought that but my body was having none of that. I just could not keep up and things started to fall by the wayside. As my energy level plummeted, I turned my focus to the "must do" list and away from any of the extras. That's why our podcast has been on hold.
My cancer journey is just that--a journey, a marathon. It has completely changed my thinking. My "I can do anything--and I don't need any help" attitude does not work with my new reality. I have come to realize that my attitude needed to change to "If I want to do the things I want to do, I need help--I can't do it all myself or the way I used to do it." I will tell you, firsthand, that this is an incredibly bitter pill to swallow for someone who has always valued independence. But when faced with the choice of not doing vs. doing differently, it didn't take me long to change my attitude.
