Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the land of 10,000 lakes, a remarkable movement
was born.
Welcome to Hometown HeroOutdoors.
We are dedicated to honoringour military service members,
veterans and first responders byproviding them with
unforgettable outdoorrecreational opportunities.
We believe those who haveserved and sacrificed so much

(00:24):
for our country and communitiesdeserve a chance to reclaim
their spirit and find healing inthe great outdoors.
This is Hometown Hero Outdoors.
Welcome to the Hometown HeroOutdoors Podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Here is your host, chris Tatro.
Hello everyone, welcome back.
This is our official kickoff tothe Hometown Hero Outdoors
podcast season three.
That's right, this is our thirdseason already.
Kind of hard to believe, but Ihave our podcast producer here,
who is Phil Ewert.

(01:15):
Phil and I go way back.
I actually began to work forthe Federal Reserve Law
Enforcement Department and Philwas my first line supervisor and
we've been friends ever since.
What is that Phil?
2008, 2000 something?
Yeah, I think it was eight, because it was right after I got
back from Iraq.
I got hired about six monthsafterwards and then you became

(01:36):
my boss.
But, phil, why don't you say hito everyone?
Tell them who you are, what youdo for HHO and what your
personal life looks like?

Speaker 1 (01:43):
yeah, absolutely so.
A few of you have seen me onthe podcast before.
I've filled in for Chris nowand then when he's been out.
But for those who haven't seen,my name is Phil Leeuwert.
I am the podcast producer.
I do the voiceover for HHO anda lot of behind the scenes stuff
that has to do with media.
I don't take the video, but Ido some of the editing, a lot of

(02:07):
the audio, scissor wheels, those sort of things.
You'll see me pop up now andthen and maybe fill in for Chris
, Maybe not this season.
This season's been goingswimmingly, but as needed I jump
in.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
And I throw you wild ideas here and there.
You do, and then you probablyroll your eyes real hard, which
I can't hear, thank God, andthen you help me out.
So I appreciate that that'sright.
Yeah, it makes good team andit's pretty cool too, just
because of how things come fullcircle.
You know, when we began workingwith each other at the Federal
Reserve, you know you told meabout your history with your

(02:44):
degree in broadcasting and howyou've always been very
integrated into the broadcastingworld and wanted to do more
with it.
But now you're more engagedwith your voiceover work and
things you do.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Yeah, so I have a side business as well, called
Philly Word Productions, where Ido professional voiceover and
media production, and thatincludes everything from
e-learning for companies, audiobooks, commercials, all the
above, and so I'm very thankfulthat I can give some of that
talent to HHO in that role.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And we certainly appreciate it because we need
the help and you know, I thinkthat one of the things that
helps set aside Hometown HeroTours from other organizations.
I think that we have a verygood media relations or media
group that we work with betweenrogue productions and yourself,
and we're able to capture thoseexperiences that people have
when they're out in the outdoorsand then also on the podcast,

(03:35):
and we're very appreciative ofhaving rogue productions, dale
and yourself here to help us andyou guys work together
occasionally.
And tomorrow you know, I knowyou can't make it, but we have
another meeting with anothermedia group coming up here who's
going to help do some PSAs forus in the near future, so
excited for that.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Absolutely.
Yeah, it's been fun workingwith Dale and obviously you guys
have had that opportunity withthe Mattson documentary, which
was phenomenal, and we have someother future events coming up,
you know, with some otherveterans that are going to also
be filmed, and so we have somegreat opportunities in the

(04:12):
future to provide content thatour viewers and listeners will
get to hear and see.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Yeah, yeah.
So let's do a little backing uphere.
We're going to talk about thepodcast, the season here, but
also who.
Hho is Hometown Hero Outdoors.
You know we've got threeseasons in Self-admittedly, our
first season's a little rough, but you know what?
We're all novices trying tofigure it out and still feel
like novices, but I think we'vegotten better.
So the organization though youknow we facilitate outdoor

(04:38):
recreation for military servicemembers, veterans and first
responders.
First responders include ourlaw enforcement officers, our
firefighters, ems, emergencymedical services, and we bring
them into the outdoors.
Nothing is reserved just to onething that we do in the outdoors
.
Our bread and butter doesrevolve around hunting and
fishing, but there are many, many other things that we do.
We've done things like hot airballoon rides.

(05:00):
We've done snowmobiling, we'vedone dog sledding trips.
There was just a air balloonrides.
We've done snowmobiling, we'vedone dog sledding trips.
There was just a gator huntthat occurred down in Florida.
Our vice president, sean, didthat.
We had a east coast trip withthe Wicked Tuna.
Captains took out some membersof HHO.
There was an elk hunt that justconcluded out in Colorado.
So there's a wide variety ofdifferent things we do.

(05:22):
It's just not refined tohunting and fishing, and I
remember that we've had peopledo some kayaking, canoeing trips
, the boundary waters, so ifit's outdoors, horseback riding,
yep, yep, and it's kind of coolbecause a lot of these things
and topics that I just broughtup are people that we engage
with, um, in these activities inthe outdoors.
We have some of them that comeon the podcast and do discuss

(05:43):
not only their ventures but alsohow they're helping others as
well.
Pretty exciting, absolutely, and I think we've now eclipsed
5,000 people that we've taken tothe outdoors since we started
in 2017.
And that's a big number.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
It is a big number and this, I believe, is our 50th
podcast, that's incredible.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
That's's incredible, that's pretty incredible.
But that means we have stuff totalk about and that's good.
But hopefully we're making adifferent difference in the
world, making a dent andreducing that stigma.
Revolving around mental health, the theme of the podcast and
everything that we're doing,it's a little bit different this
year.
Over the past years it was veryspecific to a lot of post-trip
or adventures that we would getrecaps on, and not that those

(06:27):
weren't important they still areand we still do that but we're
kind of changing the dynamic tothe podcast a little bit.
This year the nature of thepodcast is more regarding around
people who have served in anyof those military or first
responder careers, have hadmental health hurdles, and talk
about their adventures, adventures through that and how
they engage in the outdoors.
So that thing really hasn'tleft.

(06:48):
But we really focus on abroader group of people and just
not confined to the trips thatwe do this year.
I'm excited about it.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Absolutely Well.
And when you look, startlooking at the list of the names
of people that are going to beon the podcast this year, it
it's pretty star-studded.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
I mean Brett Reeves with MeatEater, you know he's a
law enforcement officer did30-plus years and he has Country
Life, a podcast that he engagesin with MeatEater.
I mean that's pretty cool,that's big time.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
We have a young musician who's on the podcast
this year, who's playing steelguitar for a rather famous guy
named Cody Johnson, and thisyoung man's name is Harrison
Yount and he's got a story totell as well.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yeah, and the relation with that too is, you
know he talks about his musicaljourney but also his love for
the outdoors and his passion forour military and first
responders, and he actually wentthrough the police academy
while he was doing his musiccareer, trying to engage and
level that up.
So he has a piece of that pietoo to talk about.
You know his experiences andwhy he has a passion for what we

(07:58):
do as an organization.
So it's pretty cool.
It is very cool.
Well, who else we got here?
So we know we talked aboutClint Romache.
You know Clint came to our galathis last year in March in
Minnesota.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
He's a Medal of Honor recipient.
Excuse me.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
And he's a fantastic human, easy to talk to, just
humble to be around him, andhe's humble to be here and be
able to share his experiencesand give back to the community
and support nonprofits.
But that's a two-part podcastand we have something else in
the works with Clint and we'restill trying to finalize that
but we haven't got that quitefar but it's coming in time.
But other individuals that wehave we have Scott Gieselhardt.
He's a retired firefighter whohad a huge mental health journey

(08:44):
.
He was addicted tomethamphetamine, attempted to
commit suicide on one occasionand ended up finding sobriety
and coming back from that andsharing his experiences with
others for mental healthpurposes.
We have Abijah on the backsidewith Sally Mixon we did equine
therapy.
She's on the podcast this year, but the list goes on.
Lots and lots of good peoplemaking impacts in the community,

(09:05):
trying to help others.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Absolutely, and we do interject a little humor.
We have a firefighter, Fenton, who's going to be on our podcast
too, For those who haven'theard of him.
He does a lot of funny stuff on, I believe.
What is it?
Tiktok, Instagram and?
Pretty much any social media, yeah, a yeah, a little little
behind the scenes offirefighting and a lot of comedy

(09:28):
, and so he's another guest wehave this year yep, he relates a
lot of things that heexperiences on the job and turns
it into humor.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
You know, and no, we don't get out of this life alive
, right?
So you might as well laugh atthings that you experience.
You know, you see these memesor videos that people put out
there for satire and you're like, yep, I get it, it's pretty
funny.
But he's a good guy, you know, and he also represents fire
department coffee, which is ahuge fire coffee department that

(09:57):
this national, and uh, he's agood company.
That's a good company that hesupports and uh, helps other
first responders and whatnot too.
But man, who else we got ontrying to think here?

Speaker 1 (10:08):
yeah, we got the wicked tuna.
Uh, we got uh because theyhelped us out with one of our
trips.
We're going to be talking to atleast one of their captains
hopefully a couple of theirsupcoming this season yep, yep,
and you know.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
So when we shoot to do these podcasts too, we have
no idea how long they're goingto take.
Usually we at least aim for atleast 30 minutes and over time
the last couple seasons.
When you start these podcastswith different individuals, you
don't know how people are goingto react when they talk on these
podcasts and you don't know ifwe're going to talk about
everything in under 20 minutesor less or if it's going to take
hours.
So most of these average about45 minutes to an hour.
Today's podcast is not going totalk about everything in under

(10:42):
20 minutes or less, or if it'sgoing to take hours.
So most of these average about45 minutes to an hour.
Today's podcast is not going tolast that long.
We just want to kind of giveyou all a glimpse into what this
next season looks like and talkabout the organization and the
different things that arehappening.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah, well, and let's take a look back though Season
two.
There's some amazing interviewsthat we did in season two.
There's some amazing interviewsthat we did in season two of
our podcast.
So for those who are new to ourpodcast, I encourage you to go
back and listen.
A guy named Pete Ripmaster onand that was a two-part series
as well, where Pete ran theIditarod 1000 race on foot I

(11:17):
mean a thousand miles.
He wrote a book about it.
It's, it's great, but uh, healso talks about a lot of mental
health things and what he dealtwith on the trail.
We talked to a retired Navy guywho's right now dealing with
cancer and his struggles inmental health and dealing with
that and his journey, and youknow there's a lot of other

(11:40):
things that we talked about.
We had what was the the rod theyoung men that were making the
fishing rods.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, Gold standard outdoors Joe.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Yep, and that was.
That's a great episode wherethey talk about custom building
fishing rods.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yes, speaking of Joe, we actually did a Mille Lacs
fishing trip with Joe this pastsummer here in Minnesota.
We got five law enforcementofficers together.
Some were medically retired, got their kids to go with and
went to Mille Lacs.
We did a day of fishing onMille Lacs and it was amazing
Really good fish Huge smallmouth, bass, walleye but Mille Lacs

(12:16):
is a world-class fishery allaround.
But at the end the next day Joetook out some fishing rod
blanks and we all built fishingrods with the kids and they'll
take them home.
So they're pretty excited aboutthat way, cool yeah yeah, well,
for our listeners.
we're super excited about this.
You can follow all of ourpodcasts on any of the major
platforms.
We have it on apple, spotify uh, there's no longer a google

(12:40):
podcast platform but on anymajor platforms.
And then also, we are going tobe releasing these every other
week, so stay tuned.
We have several of them.
These are going to last forquite a while and I'm excited
about it.
You can follow us on any of thesocial media platforms as well
LinkedIn, facebook, instagramand you can watch us on YouTube.
But we're super excited aboutthe program and everything

(13:00):
that's here to offer, and Ithink that we're going to wrap
it up here, phil.
Anything else that you want toadd?

Speaker 1 (13:06):
Yeah, actually I do want to give a shout out.
We do have three sponsors thisyear for our podcast, yep, and
so those three sponsors areO'Neill Electric out of
Stillwater.
We're very thankful for theirsponsorship.
The Minnesota Police and PeaceOfficers Association is a
sponsor, as well as RelentlessDefender.
Who wrong arm, where are we athere, does our shirts?

(13:28):
So, yeah, we're very thankfulfor all three of those folks,
those organizations, stepping upand helping us out this year
with our podcast.
Hho is an organization thatoperates on a pretty shoestring
budget and their sponsorshiphelps us kind of pay for stuff

(13:51):
like our hosting and some ofthose things that come along
with the cost of having apodcast that you can listen to,
and we're very thankful.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
And it's our first year doing sponsorship, so we
are grateful.
Thank you for reminding usabout that, Phil.
I'm usually used to youinserting your voiceovers for us
and I don't end up bringingthem up during the podcast
because we have them embedded.
So thanks for doing that.
But is there any last othercomments you want to bring up
there, Phil?

Speaker 1 (14:15):
No, that's it.
We're going to have a greatseason, looking forward to it
and, like you mentioned, notonly can you listen to our
podcast, but there is also therecorded version, the video
version that's on YouTube.
They're always going to bereleased every other week the
very first episode which you'rewatching right now, october 30th

(14:36):
, and then the rest are going tobe every two weeks after that.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
Absolutely.
And just one last thing Thankyou to all our volunteers in the
organization.
You know we don't operatewithout them.
Nobody here makes a dime.
All of us are engaged day today in what we do for our
operations.
They take everyone to theoutdoors and then they also
attend events for theorganization too and help spread
our word.
Everyone's got a big heart andthey care.
So I just got to say thank youto our volunteers and everyone

(15:00):
that gives and donates to theorganization too.
But I want to say thank youvery much and, uh, you know what
we're excited for the seasonnext week, or the kickoff of the
first episode, was scottdieselheart.
We brought him up about thefirefighter earlier.
He is, uh, started the programsinging color again and I'm
excited for you guys to listento that and get to know scott,
the program that he provides.

(15:21):
So with that, thank youeveryone and I hope you enjoy
the season of the Hometown HeroOutdoors podcast.
