And after not getting selected the first time I applied to test pilot school, when I got the word that yes, I'm on the list and I'll be going to test pilot school starting in June of 1976. I was just positively thrilled. When I first saw a drawing and artists concept of a space shuttle flying a re-entry, flying at 40 degrees angle of attack with all the fire and flame around it coming back to land, I looked at that and I said, I have not been interested in being an astronaut before because they were flying capsules, BUT NOW I AM” -Hoot Gibson.
