Speaker 1 (00:06):
Childhood, one of the most innocent times in our lives,
a time for fun, laughter, and a time for games.
But what games? Sure there was tag and ring around
the rosie, but that was it. Perhaps you're forgetting something
so sinister that you locked it away in your memory,
hoping you'll never be forced to relive it ever again.
(00:30):
So you remember Bloody Mary. The game we all used
to talk about playing as children, although many of us
were actually too scared to play, has been around for
a long time. However, it only became well known and
established in the United States in the nineteen seventies for
unknown reasons. But it didn't take long for this legend
to sweep America off her feet. Soon people were seeing
(00:54):
Mary and numerous TV shows such as the cult classic
The X Files, and more reason like Supernatural and Charmed.
The legend of Bloody Mary is one that gives me
chills just thinking about it. My fear soon became all
the more justified when I learned of the dark history
behind this dark game. Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary.
(01:21):
Do you want to play? My name is Edwin. Here's
a horror story. Much like any other game, there are
rules that must be followed to ensure success. But in
(01:42):
this game, these rules don't only allow you to succeed,
they make sure that you live to tell your experience. Now,
there are multiple different ways that you can play this game,
but the most common way goes as follows. If you
want to summon Bloody Mary, the most optimum place to
perform the rituals in your bathroom. The reason for this
(02:03):
is because you need a room that can block out
all light and become pitch black. With most bathrooms not
having any windows, this makes the task much more achievable.
After you decide on the location, now you must gather
the proper materials. In order for it to work. You
have to have some way of generating a lasting flame.
(02:25):
Usually a candle is the easiest option, and you will
also require a mirror, another reason why a bathroom is
the best place to play the game. Once night falls,
bring all of your supplies to the bathroom and make
sure that no one else is in there with you.
Block out all possible sources of light, and light your
(02:45):
candle in front of the mirror. Now it's time, when
you feel brave enough, look up and make icntact with
your own reflection in the mirror. Begin chanting Bloody Mary
thirteen times, slowly getting louder and louder each time you
say her name. After you finish, look up at the
(03:06):
mirror again. Make sure you're not standing with an arm's
length of the mirror unless you want Mary to grab you.
If you survive, quickly extinguish the flame and leave the room,
making sure to never use that mirror again. What if
you didn't see anything, Well, there are other variations of
(03:26):
the rules that may just work for you. The real
question is do you really want it to work. If
it were me, I would have thanked my lucky stars
that nothing happened. For those of you that answered yes,
then here are a few more options you can try.
Instead of playing any time at night, try playing the
game at exactly midnight. If that doesn't work, there are
(03:49):
a few ways to change your chanting method. Try chanting
her name three or seven times while running the sink
water and spinning in place each time you say her
name some odd reason, and if nothing else has worked
yet and you still haven't seen anything in the mirror,
it tried changing the word just chant. For example, Instead
of just chanting her name, repeat the phrase bloody Mary
(04:13):
I stole your baby, or even I believe in Mary worth.
If you have any concern for your soul, there are
a few things you can try that may help dispel
mary spirit and save you. Here are some tips to
survive you're encounter with Bloody Mary. As soon as you
(04:33):
finish the ritual. If you ever want to be able
to use that room again, you can try smudging it,
which is a Native American practice of cleansing a room
by burning sage. Instead of burning sage to cleanse the room,
you can flick vinegar in the corners of the room.
The third thing you can do that will help save
the mirror is drawing across with soap on it for
three nights in a row after you play the game.
(04:56):
The most important thing to remember is that you must
never I mean never break the mirror. I mean unless
you want to set her freight. When it comes to rituals,
the legend of Bloody Mary was not the first one
that involved mirrors. In fact, mirrors have played a larger
(05:19):
part in history than we thought. Years ago, during the
eighteen hundreds, Europe was already crawling with their own superstitions
involving mirrors. For example, there was a way for someone
to supposedly see the face of the person they were
destined to marry. All they would have to do is
wait until nightfall, then walk up a staircase and pass
(05:40):
the mirror at midnight. When they passed it, they would
see one of two things, either their future spouse's face
or a skull. But you were unfortunate enough to see
that skull, it meant that you would die before you
ever got to marry. Now. There are many different versions
(06:01):
of the Bloody Mary legend and who she really was.
There are a few that are the most common. The
first one derived from the alternate chant i mentioned earlier,
the story of Mary Worth. She was a woman who
lived during colonial times when suspicion of witchcraft was rampant.
(06:24):
Mary lived in a cabin just outside of her village,
where she was known for selling herbal remedies. Even though
she sold stuff that was supposed to heal, that part
didn't stop the townspeople from fearing her and calling her
a witch. Eventually, little girls in the town started to
go missing, and everyone suspected Mary, though she claimed to
(06:46):
have no knowledge of what was happening. But was even
more suspicious was that she was slowly starting to look
younger than her old, haggard appearance. Things all came to
a climax one night, though, when the miller's daughter woke
up hearing a strange noise that no one else could hear,
but she found herself being drawn to its sores. Her mother,
(07:10):
incapacitated at the moment, shouted for her husband to follow
their daughter because she was heading into the forest. After
a crowd of other farmers joined the father who was
chasing his daughter, he noticed Mary in the distance, standing
next to an oak tree with a wand in her hand.
The wand was producing a strange glowing light. It was
(07:33):
pointed towards the miller's home. When she noticed the crowd
was now running after her with pitchforks, Mary began to
flee back to her cabin. It was too late. Farmer,
now in fear for his daughter's life, grabbed and aimed
his rifle, shot Mary in the hip with a silver bullet.
(07:55):
Once they surrounded the now wounded Mary, they dragged her
away and burned her at the state. Right before she perished,
it is said that she cursed the village, saying that
if they ever spoke her name in front of a mirror. Ever,
again she would return for her revenge. After her death,
(08:18):
the morning villagers raided her cabin, where they found rows
of unmarked graves full of the missing children. Now the
suspicious return of her youth finally made sense. The blood
of the children she kidnapped were keeping her young and beautiful.
(08:43):
Another version of who Bloody Mary was comes from a
story that takes place a couple of centuries later, right
after the Civil War. Let's learn about the tragic story
of Mary Wales. In this version, Mary Wales was not
only a beautiful young woman, she was also very kind,
(09:05):
and she was born to old man Wales and his wife, Virginia. However,
he hated his daughter because when she was born, Virginia
died due to childbirth complications, and for that he blamed Mary.
One night, he came home especially drunk and angry, and
he burst into her room, stabbing her to death in
(09:27):
her bed. Her screams were drowned out by the cries
of the animals in the farm next door. When he
left her body, she was covered in blood and her
head was nearly severed from her body. The next day
he picked her up and buried her body in the basement.
(09:47):
Soon after her death, he learned that just because she
was dead, that didn't mean that she was gone. For
multiple nights, she would appear in front of him, shouting
father and attacking him, causing him to flee his barn.
One time, while he was shaving, she even appeared in
the mirror and slapped him. After a short while with
(10:10):
no incidents, old Man Wales assumed that her spirit was
done with him, but he was wrong. It was very,
very wrong. After appearing in their house again and trying
to attack him this time, she followed him to the
barn When he fled the house. When he turned around
(10:31):
there she was staring at him and pointing to a
noose next to him. With that, Mary exacted her revenge.
She was able to end the life of the man
who took hers. Both of these stories have no historical
contexts whatsoever, but it just so happens that there was
(10:54):
a real woman in history with the nickname Bloody Mary.
She was married Tutor or better known as Queen Mary,
the First of England, who reigned from fifteen fifty three
to fifteen fifty eight. Mary was an illegitimate child of
(11:17):
King Henry the eighth and Catherine of Aragon. Mary had
a very difficult life. She was plagued with horrible menstrual
pain and irregularity her entire life, and was treated like
an outcast. When she was finally able to seize the
throne at the age of thirty seven, she knew that
(11:37):
she had to marry fast and produce an air to
secure her power. She married Philip of Spain, who was
much younger than her at the time of matrimony. With
her efforts and prayers, Mary was delighted to find out
not long after that she was pregnant. Sadly, when the
time came for her to deliver, nothing ever happened. She
(12:01):
never bore a child. Eventually, even her baby bump started
to shrink. Mary thought that God was punishing her, when
in reality she suffered from pseudocyesis, or phantom pregnancy. She
wanted to be pregnant so badly that her brain tricked
her body and she developed all of the signs and
symptoms that every other pregnant woman presents except for a fetus.
(12:28):
So how does she get the nickname Bloody Mary? Well,
not only were her horrible menstrual problems a contributing factor,
The more common reason is because she brought forward the
Mary and Persecutions. This was when hundreds of people were
accused of being Protestants and then burned at the stake.
And this was because Mary was trying to restore Catholicism
(12:50):
as the primary religion of England. With all of his
death on her hands, there was no surprise the public
soon gave her the nickname Bloody Mary. Just like with
other famous legends, Bloody Mary has her own set of
alleged encounters. While searching all over the web for stories,
(13:11):
we found a few that may just give you nightmares.
First one that set out to me was the story
of Lauren and her friend and her words that were
feeling experimental one night whether they were out on the
road and they stopped at a gas station with an
outdoor restroom, and they decided to try summoning Bloody Mary.
(13:32):
The cold night air burned in their lungs as they
entered the dark, damp restroom. It was clearly empty. They
couldn't shake the feeling that they were not alone, their
mission clear in their mind, so Lauren turned off the
light and they both approached the mirror. After splashing it
with water, they started to spin around and repeat Bloody
(13:55):
Mary three times. After they finished, Lauren's friend and to
flush a toilet while Lauren continued to stare into the mirror,
only to realize that what little she could see of
her reflection was slowly turning red. When her friends started screaming,
they both ran outside the bathroom, fearful for their lives.
(14:16):
Was a head light again, her friend finally noticed why
Lauren's reflection was turning red. Much either horror, they realized
that it was because her face was actually covered in
blood due to tiny, deep fingernail scratches all over her face.
(14:36):
Needless to say, that was the last time they ever
try to summon Mary. Another story that gave us chills
was Marissa's story. According to her, she was just finishing
watching an episode of the famous show Goes to Whisper.
It was actually about the legend of Bloody Mary. Feeling
inspired by it, Marissa decided that she wanted to try
(14:58):
and scare her friend. In an effort to achieve this,
she looked into her living room mirror spent around three
times enchanted Bloody Mary. Nothing happened, unsurprisingly, so she went
to the bathroom to try again and her friend warned
her not to be close the door, shut off the light,
(15:18):
and repeated the chant yet again. Looking into the mirror,
this time she saw nothing. She was just about to
turn the light on when something in the mirror stopped her.
Looking closer, Marissa saw a black and white woman staring
at her with her mouth wide open. Expecting a scream
(15:41):
from the woman, Marissa stood still, waiting. Nothing happened. Then
the apparition lifted her arms toward Marissa. She noticed something.
Her hands were covered with bright red blood because her
fingernails had been torn off. Her heart now pounding faster
(16:01):
than it had ever been, Marissa felt hands grab her
from behind. Screaming, she turned on the light and ran
out of the bathroom. It turns out not only did
she scare her friend, but she ended up terrifying herself.
(16:22):
So with everything we've learned about her so far, the
most basic concept seems to have been overlooked, and that
is just what does Bloody Mary look like? There are
many different ideas about Bloody Mary's image, such as she
either takes on the appearance of how she died as
a corpse, she appears like a haggard witch ready to
(16:44):
steal the souls of her unlucky victims. With all of
the different concepts out there, there is one constant that
has always described in the way she looks. She is
always covered in blood, always, whether it be on her
face or hands. Blood is, without a doubt, the one
(17:05):
constant and Bloody Mary. What happens to you when you
play the game also varies based on who you asked,
as you can now infer based on the earlier stories
submitted by people on the internet. Some claim that she
tries to grab you or strangle you. Some say she
screams and curses you, or tries to steal your soul. Lastly,
(17:27):
other claims that she either wants to drink your blood
or scratch your eyes out. No matter the consequence or
playing the game, I think everyone can agree that none
of them are pleasant. Now let you know everything there
is to know about Bloody Mary. Want to play? Timing
(17:55):
is perfect as you wait it all day for this
the claw. It's about to strike midnight, as you hear
the wind howl outside and the trees beat against the
side of your home. Carrying a candle and lighter, you
make your way up the dark stairs and into the
cold bathroom. An odd mixture of fear and excitement fills
(18:17):
your chest as you head into the bathroom and close
the door. Excited to finally play this game since you
never did as a child's but fearful you may see
something that you will never be able to forget. Making
sure the room is devoid of all light, you grab
the lighter. You ignite the candle and set it in
front of your bathroom mirror, creating an eerie tone to
(18:40):
the room. You're ready to start. Slowly lifting your head,
you make eye contact with your reflection and begin to
chant into the mirror. Bloody Merry, bloody Marry, Bloody Marry,
getting louder and louder as you make your way up
(19:00):
the sinister number thirteen. You go to lift your head
up again and look in the mirror. You need to
find that you can't. Frozen with fear, you feel as
if your head is being held down by cold, frozen fingers.
After an intense minute of struggling, finally gain the strength
(19:22):
look out. Your body is trembling with fear. Your eyes
are dilated trying to see in the dark mirror as
your labored breathing fills the deafening silence. We're fully ready
for something to jump out at you or grab you
from behind. You stare into the pitch black mirror. You
(19:43):
need to find nothing, absolutely nothing to breath. You didn't
realize you were holding seeps out of your lips as
you silently laugh at yourself. Of course, nothing would happen.
What are you expecting? You blow out the candle and
(20:05):
open the door. Just as you're about to leave the bathroom,
something catches your eye. Will look like a hand swiped
at the mirror, or at least you thought it did.
Are you kidding? It's just a legend. Shaking your head,
you step out of the bathroom, leaving all those silly
(20:27):
thoughts behind you. When it comes to this legend, why
are we so captivating by it? Why do so many
people find it fun to play the game, even when
they know the most likely outcome. There are many possible reasons,
but perhaps the most logical one is that it fulfills
our human desire for excitement or the thrill of being scared.
(20:53):
No matter the reason, there are some things that you
just don't mess with, or else you may find yourself
in the mirror, the dark, the door that just won't open,
you're really sure enough said her name. Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary,
(21:15):
Bloody Mary, Bloody Blood. This episode of Horror Story was
researched and written by Medel Inguera and it was originally
published for A Dark Memory, the original version of this show.
