A 51-year-old man, identified as Ramon Rivera, was arrested in connection with a stabbing spree across Manhattan that left two people dead and one critically injured. The incidents occurred on Monday morning at three different locations. The first stabbing happened around 8:30 a.m. at 444 West 19th Street, where a 36-year-old construction worker was fatally stabbed. The second incident occurred at 10:30 a.m. at 500 East 30th Street, where a 68-year-old man was stabbed to death while fishing. A third stabbing took place at 10:55 a.m. at East 42nd Street and First Avenue, where a 36-year-old woman was critically injured.
The suspect was taken into custody at East 46th Street and First Avenue after a cab driver witnessed one of the stabbings and alerted the police. The attacks are believed to be unprovoked, with the suspect initiating disputes with the victims before stabbing them.
The suspect has a history of eight prior arrests and is reported to have severe mental health challenges, raising questions about why he was not in a controlled environment. Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the failure of both the criminal justice and mental health systems in addressing such cases.
The investigation is ongoing, but police are not looking for any additional suspects at this time.
