This week, some of our usual suspects (Joe Beneduce and Gav) have bottled it with some very questionable excuses — but the show must go on.

We break down the First Eleven’s loss to Ramsbottom and take a look at what went wrong, what went right, and where we go from here. We also talk through the Rishton T20 game.

We’re joined by Dr. Charlie Bithell, who’s in fantastic form for the Second Eleven. He takes us through their recent run of success, the vibe in the side, and his own performances. But then he confesses about the purple hairdryer.

(00:00):
Are you listening to a podcast? Cheers.
No, I'm, I'm in Paris. It's.
Paris. Seriously, I'm just in a bar one
second. I'll leave this lads talking

(00:20):
not. Because of the fans, not because
of anyone. Because it's an outstanding
club. Is it Tiara Ray?
And it might be in his bar. Yeah, just having a glass with
him. So I'm not sure who else is

(00:55):
coming. So well, let's let's crack on
straight away and we can see I. Think it's good because Dutch's
family in law. Is that a phrase or having a
round for? A round for.
Tea. I didn't realise what it was.
He just said he's, he sent me a message, I'll read it just says

(01:19):
I'm not coming on when we've gotbeat.
And that's all. And then Gaff sent me once says
I might walk in the dog. So it just shows you who the
loyal ones are and who aren't. So everyone welcome to lower
house cricket clubs podcast the house cast.

(01:41):
We're continuing to record once a week, which is quite an
achievement bearing in mind how busy we all are and and what
we've got on away from Laurice. But it's so enjoyable this year,
whether it's because of the weather or the performances and
it's good to celebrate, I guess. And we will take criticism if

(02:03):
there's any there and, and we will take questions.
We got meet at weekend but we are going to, you know, talk
through that defeat. But thankfully we've got a guest
on tonight who's part of a a really great winning side.
I was second 11 and he's performing really well himself.
So we'll we'll come on to him ina second.

(02:27):
As we just discussed. I don't know if it was off air
on there. I'll never know with with Joe
Martin and I am frozen. I was just thinking what I was
going to say that. You look like frozen Jess.

(02:47):
I know we've a couple of hosts down tonight, Joe Mark, Joe
Beneducci has tried his best to come on but at the last minute
has actually had to cry off. I can't get to the bottom of why
Joe Martin says that Joe Beneducci's in laws around and
that's why he's not coming on. I was of the impression, and I

(03:10):
got a little bit of information earlier this week that it's
because we got beat and how he'sbeen so excited and quite
vociferous and his comments around the Burlie game of have
spread like wildfire. I think he's a little bit
worried about coming on, but then Gav Gavis said that he's

(03:30):
away. There's some horse racing event
in the Lake District and Rachel doesn't know, but we'll see.
I'm sure we'll get to the bottomof it, but we've got 2 trusty
horse on. Gary's struggling a little bit
with his signal at the moment which gives more fuel to the

(03:53):
fire of the Rugrats for for taking the knicker and then Joe
Martin. So Joe, how are you doing?
OK. Thanks, Jess.
How are you? Yeah, good.
Yeah, really good. Like I said, I don't know if you
were recording it or not. I've had a quite a busy day
doing a few jobs and a little bit of work for another sport
which is got a bit frustrating but I had a good day with it but

(04:17):
it keeps me busy and keeps me mind going and and having good
fun so all good. Have you been up with too much
today? Have you been working?
No, I've had the last two days off.
I'm on, I'm on a I'm on a summertour of, of concerts.
So I booked the day after off because I'm very tired.
I'm very tired. I'm obviously not hungover or

(04:39):
anything but I get tired the dayafter so I need AI.
Need a lion? What a great title, a summer
tour of concerts. We're Andrea Bocelli.
Joe. No, no, I'm, I'm a bit more
rockier than that. That's just your former self.
Yeah. Yeah.

(04:59):
It's a previous life. No, I was, I was.
In fact I was with Joe Beneduccilast night seeing seeing Bruce
Springsteen in in Liverpool. I had heard a whisper that you
were over there. Yeah, I was.
It did. Did the boss perform?
Oh, he always performs. It's marvellous.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's great.

(05:21):
Were you singing? Of course, yeah, a little bit
too loudly as well and doesn't happen very often, Jess, But I
was I was well, loosely, I was Iwas dancing as well at the time.
Thought looked at it felt good at the at the time.
But there's a been a secret filmmade and it doesn't look good.

(05:44):
Jazz. OK, how?
Who has got the secret film I? Can't say, but yeah.
Is it someone at the event? Yes, of course.
Well, yeah, they struggle if they weren't.
Well, they might have sent it via WhatsApp and then deleted
it. That is a tactic that these
people do do, right? OK, well we'll we'll find out a

(06:09):
bit. If anyone does have that video,
if you want to e-mail it to Adamat Warehouse CC, we won't spread
it anywhere. Thank you.
Yeah, that might not be a good thing.
But the other thing I'm conscious of, Jess, is that
we're not allowed to talk about gardening or, you know,
vegetation. I know.
I know, but ditch is not on at the moment.
Coming on a tree. Oh.

(06:30):
Really. That's nice, Jess.
So. So our house is still with black
and potted at the minute, but we're doing all right as a, as a
detour. What have you had for your tea?
Yeah, that's a nice. That's a nice, isn't it?
We used to talk a lot like that then, but I think we got told
off for, I think we got told offfor doing that.

(06:51):
I'd rather not talk about it, Joe, if that's if that's all
right. What did you have?
I haven't had it yet. All right.
OK. I think I'm on sausage.
It was a complete disaster. Oh.
No. Oh.
No, I do like, I do like to, youknow, prep and plan and and get

(07:15):
everything in order. I've a chicken breast weight and
then I wanted to make some stir fried rice with so I got all the
ingredients of Peppers, the onions and mushrooms, everything
together. And then I made me rice, which
I'm going to throw into the frying pan and quickly heat
through. But I used best Matty rice.
Oh. No.

(07:36):
Oh, it would have just mushed up, I reckon.
Will it? Oh Joe, you should have seen it.
You were like Mashed potato. So you had chicken potato cakes
it. Seemed that way, yeah.
I'm just glad I wasn't feeding anyone else because it was
horrendous. So thanks very much for bringing
that up. It tasted all right, Jess,
though, would it? Well, you know, you know what

(07:58):
I'm like. I don't, I don't throw anything
away, but I struggled with the last couple of my falls out the
chicken. But but no thanks for bringing
that up. Duke should be really happy that
we're talking about our feed andour food.
Let's get on to the cricket. Gary, are you back with us?

(08:22):
We should do. We could do with a tumbleweed
going across the screen there and that noise.
I don't know if you can add it Adam or Joe like in a Western.
Yeah, we'll be able to add it in.
Yeah, no problem. I'll.
Find a bit like a bit like this. That won't come out well on the

(08:45):
thing, but you know. Yeah, you get my gist.
So Gabby obviously can't come onand just discuss if you watched
any of the game on on Sunday Rammy at home Joe Martin.
I don't want to pre empt or to push my views or my thoughts

(09:05):
around the game. Just tell me how you've just
talk. Summarise the game and how it
went. Yeah.
So there's obviously a quite a lot of rain about at the
weekend, which which meant that, you know, things are always
difficult to to kind of plan anddecide what you what you want to

(09:27):
do. I still think in the, you know,
how we play, you know, batting first is always the thing that
we want to do, put pressure on on the on the opponents and put
pressure on the bowlers. And it probably didn't go as

(09:50):
didn't go to plan as as, as, as we'd like happen.
And you know, you've got you've got 11 batters for a reason.
And the conditions were, you know, challenging, I guess, to
say, to say that. And, and Rammy bowled, Rammy

(10:10):
bowled really well. Rammy bowled really well too.
But we, but we, we kept fightingand we and we got to 160.
Joe Hawke battered extremely well.
Henry and Tom in the in the middle order did a did a good
job too. Charlie Cotton and and Paddy,
Paddy did did well as well. So it got us to 160, which which

(10:33):
we thought was was a defendable total in the 38 overs.
And, and unfortunately in the, in the in the second innings, we
couldn't quite defend it. The Pro Bowl really well, Pat
Bowl well, Tom Walker Bowl well and I think we did.

(10:54):
We, if I'm being honest, Jess, we didn't.
I don't in my opinion, I don't think we got a lot.
I don't think we got a lot wrong.
I think it was one of those games where I think Rammy
played. I think Rammy played pretty
well. I think they battered well in
those middle overs, didn't rotate to the strike well,

(11:15):
pushed, pushed ones into twos and and so on, hit boundaries.
And it was, I think it was just one of those days where things
didn't quite fall, fall in our, in our favour.
There are a few things that could have gone our way and they
didn't. So just a case of, of, of

(11:36):
writing it off and, and startingagain this, this weekend.
It's like, and this isn't an excuse, but slightly chaotic,
obviously with Dan being injuredas well.
So you, you, you know, you have plans to go into the weekend
and, and they've changed slightly when you, when you get
a, when you get a who did, who did a great job.

(11:57):
It was a really nice chap and a very good bowler too.
But yeah, one of those games, they're always good games
against Rami and I think they I think they played pretty well.
Fair assessment, join my view. I watched, you know, probably
3/4 of it and I did question, you know, and at least I will

(12:18):
be, I will stand up to be scrutinised once again about the
logic in batting first. But I agree with the I agree
with the sympathy. I do provide a little bit of
sympathy around that in the weather forecast did say, you

(12:40):
know, an hour maybe of blustery showers and then to come good.
I think that came out an hour late.
Yeah. Which time we'd probably, you
know, obviously Ben was out quite early.
Frankie was looking quite good. Henry was looking good and
solid. Tom, you know the pro got out
early and Charlie, but it was not easy batting.

(13:05):
No, I think, I think it was unhelpful as well, Jess, that
there was some quite heavy showers.
Yeah. That each one lasted probably
about a minute, yeah. But but we were kind of taken
off and then within that minute we're pulling the covers on and

(13:25):
then being asked to take them, take them off again.
It really hard to make any kind of decision in that, in that
kind of scenario. All right?
Because, you know, you've got a source of, there's a really fine
balance, but you know, it disrupts your flow and, and, and
it means that you've got to, youhave to kind of reset and, and,

(13:49):
and start again. So yeah, it's, yeah, it was,
yeah, it was challenging. And who knows if we had those,
those stoppages, whether whetherwe might have got another 20 or
30 runs, not sure. Yeah, I love chatting to you on

(14:11):
these podcasts because I can read you.
Like when you don't want me to come in, you waffle on in a
really good way. In a really good way.
I agree with you. You know, I'm not sure around
the batting or bowling, it's so difficult.
But Gary and myself used to discuss it.
The worst conditions to play cricket in his wind, You know,

(14:34):
the rain, they drag you off or you're playing in drizzle.
It's not that different. You know, the pitch is OK, but
when it's really windy, it's difficult as a bowler.
There's no momentum. The fielders all feel isolated
and that's what happened. I think for that, what I think
Ben expected to be the 1st 10 overs became 2025 overs and then

(14:59):
the last 15 overs or 20 overs, you could see the pitch played
great and the batting became easier.
So I get it all. It's the worst decision in the
world, Gary. You know, going back when you
were skipper, those games where the forecast is a bit
unpredictable because of the thewind mainly and the little

(15:21):
storms that come along, they were just a nightmare, weren't
they? Yeah, they were.
And I don't know whether we're just bad memories of those
times, but they seem to be. Happened more often and used
them as a bit of an excuse, but not they were.
You can tear people across the pitch, you know, if somebody's
move trying to move the field orbatters of calling or, you know,

(15:44):
stuff like that. Just people trying to encourage
you didn't carry. Yeah, we're hard work.
Just didn't feel like being out there.
No. And also, Joe, I'm sure you
weren't criticising the umpires at all around coming off.
No, no. No, no, I knew you wouldn't be.

(16:05):
Yeah, I knew you wouldn't be because.
You don't go off I. Don't think, I don't think
you've criticised anyone, even King Herod.
I think you you let him off. He wasn't a bit low jazz, I'm
sure he had his. Strengths, but but I do feel,
you know, the umpire and they did stand there in a proper

(16:26):
downpour on at least two occasions because you could see,
you know, everyone could see that the clouds were going to
blow off. But you just it's not only
possible, but I've got to reiterate what you said.
Joe Rami played well, they stuckat it.
You know, you could they could see that, you know, our our

(16:46):
momentum and our rhythm was going.
So it once again, and I keep saying this at every podcast,
the standard of cricket is outstanding, the way that
they're stuck at it in difficultconditions.
And I will not make any excuses. Most sides going back 1015 years
and include ourselves as a batting side, you'd almost not

(17:09):
give up, but you would play rashshots, you would something Daff
would go on. But Henry stuck there and
battled through that knowing that it could get better and the
pitch did get better. Rami definitely had the best bit
of the pitch as far as batting wise goes, but I genuinely

(17:30):
thought up to maybe 10 overs at the end of their innings we were
going to beat them. But I think that, you know,
fielding and and wholeness battered very well at the end,
you know, how did you find that?Did you try all sorts of things,
Joe? Yeah.
I mean, we were in a we were in a, in a I'll just go back to the
umpire point Jess for one second.

(17:51):
Yes, definitely not criticising the umpires because they're in a
no win situation where they stayon in the rain.
The fielding side are not happy because they're drenched wet
through. And if they come off the batting
side aren't happy because they think it's going to blow over in
a minute and we can carry on. So there's a no win situation.
They've just got to make the decision that that they that
they think is right and that's and that's fair.

(18:14):
Yes, I would say for, for probably 25 overs, maybe 30
overs of of Rummy's innings, I, I had no doubts that we were
going to win the game. Either we were going to bowl
them out or, or or even restrictthem to that.

(18:36):
But they built small partnerships throughout, didn't
really give the wickets away. If you like, you know, through a
rash shot or, or, or whatever the, you know, we had to, we had
to actually, we, we worked really hard to try and get
those, those wickets. So yes, I think, you know, we,

(18:58):
we swapped the ball in around. We brought people on.
TomTom Walker came back on and and got the pro out.
You know, Pat started really well up front, the Pro Bowl, the
Pro Bowl bowl really well as as well.
Ben came on for an over to to see if he could, he could get
anything through. And but yeah, sometimes you've
just got to kind of hold your hand up and and say well, well

(19:21):
played. And then and, you know, they
played, they played well. So yeah.
Yeah, I agree. And and a good win for them.
You know, I think before that game they were certainly they
bought some two or three and that's how strong the league is.
And, and going forward, that's what we've all got to look
forward to. Thanks very much for your

(19:42):
synopsis there, Joe. I want to move on to the guests.
We've not even introduced him, but it is so important that we
get across here around the, the,the structure of the club and
how you know, well, it is being, you know, the, the, the, the,
the. Younger players are coming

(20:02):
through, so the second team player who's who's phenomenal
this year and some of his performances.
CC Bissell. Hi Charlie, How are you doing?
Hi, James. Thank you for having me on.
I'm good. Thank you.
No problem at all. It's it's a pleasure to get some
of you know, we've had Declan onand and we talk around the the

(20:23):
second team and third team as much as we've as much as we can.
How pleased are you with the start that the same team have
have had? I mean, as a team we're all
overjoyed with the start we've had.
I think after what was a really tricky season last season to to
reform group together as a team. And you know, I think it's ten
in a row now including our friendlies.

(20:45):
So it's the dream start really. But I think we're all still
cautious, that we can't get complacent and need to kick on.
Yeah, no, it's but you know, so it's a good way of looking at
it. You know, 10 games in we
including a friendly seven gamesin the league, top of the league
by 10 points, 17 out of seven. Declan seems to have developed

(21:10):
as a as a skipper, a little bit more confident in his own game
is coming on. He was a little bit shy when we
had him on. How much has that influenced the
way that the team are playing? I think it's massive.
I mean it was always going to bea bit of a tricky first season
for Deck coming into being skipper.
I think with a young group of lads, especially having played

(21:31):
with Deck through the ranks, it's establishing that sort of
being a mate but also being a skipper.
But he stuck it out. He's, you know, been making some
great choices on and off the pitch for the team and he's been
contributing with the bat and the ball.
So I think naturally he's progressed quite well and as
time goes on we're maturing as ateam and hopefully long may it
last. Yeah, no, I agree.

(21:54):
And I think it was 23, I think it was Charlie, you were skipper
and, and you're doing so well inyour studies and going through
university and, and you're now over in Leeds.
And is, is that still correct that you travelled from Leeds to
just play for fellow house? Yeah, so I studied up in
Newcastle, so I spent five yearsup there whereby I travelled

(22:18):
down every weekend to play. And then now the last two years
I've lived and worked in Leeds. So, you know, I was being
skipper, you know, and I'm stillhappy to to be biassed when
deck's not there or be a senior member in the changing room
despite only being 25. But yeah, I think having deck
here, being able to sort of be present at more training

(22:40):
sessions, more on the ground is certainly helps as a team.
I bet and maybe you're taking a little bit of pressure off off
yourself. It's difficult.
I'm aware. You know, you got training on
your own back in Leeds. You and you may you get, you
know, you're going to the the outdoor Nets.
You keep yourself fit and you keep working at your game.

(23:02):
And I can see the benefits of that with with some of your
performance, you know, you know, the leading wicket taker and
getting some serious runs now aswell.
You you got a 50 odd the week before last and four wickets.
That's some performance that Charlie have you, that feel when
you're, you know, when you're winning games like that for

(23:22):
second team almost on your own. I mean it, of course, it feels
great. I think all bowlers fancy
themselves a bit as a batsman. So all three winter, that's
definitely part of my game. I've been trying to trying to
improve, you know, work in these20s and 30s, not outs into
getting some good scores down atthe tail.
And I think the game quite suited me coming into bat, you

(23:44):
know, needing steady the ship somewhat and carried through and
you know, I was well supported down the order.
Braden came in battles for a bitof time, Joe Masson came in,
scored a quick 15, took some pressure off me.
So that was excellent. And then with the ball, I mean,
obviously grabbing the wickets is is a part of our game that we
all want to develop. I think coming down into the
second division this season, we all know that perhaps there'll

(24:08):
be some less traditional cricketshots played and a bit more
direct bowling that's needed. And I think it came on at 50 for
9 and got a few wickets. Then Ollie Williams came back
on, you know, really dried up the batters which has been
excellent at this season. Same with deck standing at the
other end. So I guess, yeah, while it's
good personally to take the wickets and Long made the last,

(24:28):
I think it'd be wrong for me to say that when it on my own.
It's, you know, when we bowl, webowl in tandem, we bowl as a
unit. And this season, seeing the
likes of Ollie Williams and Yanis come on especially has
been has been great for the team.
Yeah. And, and, and as you say, it's,
you know, even at your age you're classing yourself as a

(24:50):
senior player. These younger players will
benefit and you will naturally, you know, experience shows us
that you'll naturally get the performances where you get two
or three wickets or 2020 runs just to to benefit the the team.
Have you Can you notice a big difference in the second
division and the First Division even within the 2nd 11?

(25:14):
I think so. I think you know, you know that
every, every second 11 is going to have at least one or two good
bowlers who could probably play in either division.
Same with the batting. I think that the tail can
sometimes be a little bit longerin some of the sides, but that
being said, you've still got to bowl and you still got to get
them out. I mean, you know, we last
weekend against Baker, we bowledwell, got into the tail and then

(25:36):
I got hit for the biggest 6 I think I've ever been hit for of
the score box over the houses. So it goes to show that anything
can happen. And at the end of the day, you
still got a red ball and a bat. But I think, you know, part of
it is as a second team we've grown in confidence in games
that perhaps last season we would have lost.
We're digging deep and we're pushing through and and I think

(25:59):
maybe being in the second division is something that's
going to benefit us quite well in the long term this season.
Yeah, it's funny you should say that.
A couple of, you know, people who watch first and second team
a lot have said that. You know, whilst the promotion
was fantastic, was it 20/22/23, playing in that first First

(26:20):
Division was maybe a touch too early for some of the younger
lads. So, you know, getting, getting
this experience, keeping the place together, I think that's
important, keeping them and Declan's doing a, a good job on
that. And I'm sure you're, you're
helping out as much as you can. And you know, I, I failed to
mention at the start of this that, you know, you're still in

(26:41):
the cup as well as the first team.
So are you all eyeing up a nice little cheeky double and then a
a trip to Blackpool for the weekend?
It it would be great. I mean we've got a tricky game
in the next round at home against Little Bro and they seem
to be doing quite well in the First Division.
That being said, we've we've gothigh confidence at the moment.

(27:02):
We're playing well, you know, ifwe beat those, who knows, it'll
be it'll be lovely to have a cuprun.
We'd love a cup final down here. We've been to watch the first
team play, plenty of them, so hopefully it'll be our turn to
bring home a bit of silverware. Yeah, well, it'd be fantastic
and it's good to see because that does breed, you know,
confidence and and enthusiasm within the thirds and the

(27:26):
fourths and then any of the junior sides.
Again, you know, credit to the grain staff with with regards to
where the pictures are in our dear guys.
It used to be 17 even. We'll be at the bottom of the
square and left alone. It wouldn't even be rolled.
Gary, you would be gobsmacked atsome of the pictures that the
the seconds and thirds play on now.

(27:47):
I mean even me and you would have got a few runs back then.
I don't know what you think. They must be belters then,
because. I.
Think he gained some runs with don't matter what we're playing
on. Yeah no, it's, it's good when I
was up there the other way we can had a chat with Stan and was
out in the middle and stuff and you could see it was just

(28:08):
evident the the hard work that'sgoing into it all and and and it
and it you're right. The centre of the square was was
the first team's domain. And and you know you weren't
even allowed to get anywhere near it during practise or or
certainly like say second or thirds games.
But if they if they want to playfirst match, you know end up

(28:28):
being in the in the 1st 11 senior cricket and better
themselves, then, you know, getting the same conditions and
and everything else. It just stands to reason that
you know it it sets them up for,you know, going and playing on a
faster, harder, bouncy, maybe not bouncy down at Laurice, but
but you know, a belt in wicket because that that was a shot.

(28:50):
You come from seconds and it's hard enough stepping up against,
you know, season senior players and a professional.
Then if you're playing in on a track that is just alien to you
because you have been used to itbeing slow and low and a bit
green and stuff and it's coming on three times as quick on to
bat, then that can be a shock initself.
So yeah, good to see that they're getting opportunities in

(29:13):
the in the in the on the square and getting, you know, good,
good tracks for them. One thing I wanted to ask you,
Charlie was deck was on the other way can sport very well.
You know, it came across almost sensible and he he, what was
what, what made me chuckle was his honest assessment of some of

(29:34):
people in the team. And you know, Jess and I, you
know, we'd, we'd often say things, you know, in a dressing
room and one or two warm truths at times to try and motivate or
just, you know, set a standard or whatever.
But deck seemed to do that quiteopenly on on record with with

(29:54):
with stuff. But what's it like playing, you
know, with, you know, the deck, like if you where you've been,
like you say, mates with him, etcetera.
Is there any issue there on pitch?
How's how's his tactics? How do you view his his his
match day performances? So I mean.
On the whole good, you know, I think what helps with Deck,

(30:18):
especially with some of us, all the lads with mates first and we
know that no matter what we're going to leave everything out
there. His decision on the pitch, he
took me off at Bake Up and over sooner than I think he should
have done and we had a few wordsbetween us.
But that's all all buried and dead now.
I think ultimately we all want the same.
We all want to kick on. We all want to win as a second

(30:38):
team and I think Deck has grown this year as a captain.
He certainly listens to to the likes of myself.
See me KIRO, if we we pick something up that you might not
have picked up. But yeah, on a match day, I
think, you know, we don't all play there to wear white and
chase the red ball around the field.
We play that because we're a setof mates and and it certainly

(31:00):
shows. Yeah, no, it's it's it's it's
good to see that. And I think what the
conversations are having we're up there.
We we when I was up there the other weekend, we we, you know,
a few of the ex players, non players, people who who are
watching, who got a, you know, atrust as we are in these
opinions these days. They, they were speaking very

(31:22):
early, you know, 3 or 4 of you who like you say are a bit more
senior in that team now and really setting, setting your
stall out and everybody else following.
So, so yeah, credit to you. Well done.
Cheers. Yeah, it, it, it is just shows
what a fantastic game cricket is.

(31:42):
I'm just looking through variousscorecards and you know, the,
this is a similar team, Charlie,to, you know, last year or maybe
the year before when you know, you, you got promoted and there
was some players struggled, you know, they weren't getting fifty
runs in a season and because of age and but it's also the

(32:04):
momentum. You look at that same team now,
the squad that's there and, and I'm not including maybe two or
three players. Sorry, the phone fell over.
I'm not including two or three players who might come.
You know, you might come from the first team, you know, get
Metcalf, Deck, Stannett, Will Norcross, Keegan Shawkat

(32:24):
yourself, Braden Watson, Danny SIM, you know, Olly Williams,
Yannis and Jackson that they're all, all of you who are
potential to get in the first team.
If if the momentum doesn't carryon, Charlie, do you?
Can you see people, Kathleen? Can you see people?

(32:45):
You know, you lose two or three games and it goes back to the,
well, it's not down to me, it's his fault or, or is it that team
spirit that can get you through that bad patch, that little
dodgy patch? I think having come out the
right end of last year we've grown a lot from that
perspective. I think, you know, you've got a
set of lads there as you mentioned, who were all aspiring
to be first team cricketers. You've got a set of lads there

(33:08):
you know could and should be knocking at the door and
potentially even banging it down.
I mean, we get a few bad results.
It's going to happen. We're not going to win every
game for the rest of time. Yeah.
I think, you know, if you look at the end of last season when
we were pushing through where we're stringing a couple of half
results together, it may be a bit too late.

(33:29):
I think we've come into the season with a real fresh mind
and you know, you name a lot of names there and there's, there's
even more of a deeper squad, youknow, the likes of Joe Clark and
Lewis Clark who both played Harvey Elliott's.
Well, you know, you've got a lotof players there who are wanting
to be a part of this growing side who are wanting to kick on
with the cricket. And I do feel that even if a few

(33:51):
poor results come our way, we've, we've got the friendship
there and, you know, the, the spuds really to, to kick back,
which perhaps we didn't have last year.
And that's so important, you know, I admitted the good, you
know, the 13 players who are doing well and and these some of
these kids are under 15 who are pushing you guys.
And I don't know, there's injuries or work commitments.

(34:13):
So it's fantastic to see. So Charlie, really appreciate
your comments and and your coming on.
If I don't, if you don't mind, we we've probably got another 20
minutes to discuss a few other bits and bats.
If you want to stop on we do open a live chat for questions
so if you want to stop on whilstwe just go through a few other
points if that's OK. Yeah, that's fine.

(34:34):
Cheers fellas. Brilliant.
Thanks very much. Just.
Mention it to the rest of the team.
Charlie carry on winning becausewe only pod with winning teams
right? And the first team let everyone
die in a weekend. Joe Martin's hiding in the
corner, head in shame. So you boys, you're, you're
flavour of the month all right. Nice one, there's plenty of lads

(34:55):
who want to come on, believe me,he's.
Pretty popular, Jess, a number of people that say whether they
can come on or not. I mean, you, you're turning into
like a, a Parky or a David Froststyle.
You know, you're delving into big topics.
You're going to be in, I don't know, Sudan next week covering,

(35:15):
covering the civil war. And you'll be, you'll have like
a, you know, a bulletproof jacket with press on it.
I think he's more Graham Norton than David Frost.
I was thinking more if I carry on I'll end up being sat in a
park. Never mind being Parker, I've
well, I wanted to come on to thethe podcast and the and what

(35:40):
people are discussing it, it. It's fantastic that, you know,
we keep going down the club, even on Sunday when the weather
wasn't that great, because we doget good conversations, people
talking about various things andit's whilst Joe Martin we we
converse almost daily about whatwe can have on and what we

(36:01):
can't. It's not all about us.
And to get some history on, you know, I'd urge people to read
the history section on the website, some of the stuff that
Anne Cochran puts on there and the different memories are
outstanding. And we do intend before the end
of the season to get some sort of a history podcast going.

(36:22):
I can't you know, as much as we keep talking about it, I think
on Sunday and another three or four people mention how grateful
they were they were towards all of us and especially, you know,
Fran and Bethany and Grace and then they would say Gary at the
end of it for that podcast. So please keep listening and

(36:45):
keep giving us some some help and advice as what you would
want on Joe Martin, me and you would would listen to the
history and talk about it forever.
And it's probably a little bit unfair to talk about these two
whilst they're on, but Gavin andDuke just aren't interested at
all. How can we change that, do you

(37:05):
think? I don't know if they're not
interested, Jess, it's people have different interests, don't
they, You know, So I'm sure, I'msure they'll be, they'll be very
keen on on that kind of thing. I don't know.
Can we just force them to listento it physically?
Yeah. If we just like to follow them

(37:27):
around, follow them around with the recording.
Well, I was thinking more of tying them up in your room and
then just playing it until it's finished and then they have to
leave. I'll leave that with you, Jess.
You seem to have a knowledge of that kind of thing.
In the old days it used to happen to me and Gary by the
elder states people, you know, clearly we can't do that mate.

(37:51):
Stan tells a funny story, Jess. I should probably let him tell
it, but essentially they used to, they used to when he first
went into the second team, they used to boot him and his mum
heard about it and she had a, she had a disagreement with Alan
Suthers and they and they reached an agreement that they
could carry on kicking him as long as he wore his box.

(38:16):
Hello. They used to have a kit bag.
I mean me and Gary remember the kit bag and they would put
people in it, put people in the kit bag.
I mean, rumour has it your brother got rolled down the
stairs at Nelson in the kit bag.I believe, yeah, I believe so.
I don't know who did it. Just do you.

(38:37):
I think standing captain of the day or some somebody like that.
Yeah, it probably was. He was frustrated.
But he has no recollection of that game at all.
Gary. We were talking about it last
year at Middleton. Middleton.
He had concussion by the end of it.
No, no, the the the the perpetrator.
No, OK. Had no idea.

(38:57):
And I said because you played a game in the second team when you
came back, didn't you? You know I would insert a name
there. But you know, we, I'm sure you
can all guess who it is. No, I never did.
I never played in the 2nd 2 after that after I'd finished,
so I had to traipse through Lancashire League website trying

(39:18):
to find this game that he playedin.
He bowled very well. Nelson there.
You go 2006 apparently, yeah. But yeah, you know that history
side. I've just been searching through
here and was watching the European, well, not the European
Cup final. It was that Mickey Mouse game
that should have been played up low, timely between Spurs and

(39:39):
Man United and this and the commentators mentioned about an
old Spurs. I don't think he was even the
manager. He was a coach or something
similar, Billy Brocklehurst or someone.
And he had connections to Law House.
He'd actually played at Law House in the 40s and 50s.
So that's worth a good read. And we will do it, Joe.

(40:01):
We will get, you know, those youknow the different aspects on
because that's what spectators want to want to listen to.
We have had a poll out asking questions of of the fans see
what they want to do. Has anyone anything they want to
discuss before I put this on? The only thing that I will say

(40:23):
chess is that we we had a reallygood win on the Friday night in
the T20 against Richton here we.Go.
Let's talk about that. It was a tricky, it was a tricky
wicket and we got 100 and 2000 and 30.
Hockey battered well. Hockey battered well.
Again. I can't quite remember the
scores, but you know, quite a few people, quite a few people

(40:47):
chipped in to get us to that, toget us to that score.
And then and then we bowled extremely well as well.
Sure. Kat bowled well, Pat bowled well
and you know, TomTom bowled wellas well and hockey did.
Everybody bowled well. So it was a really good, really
good win and it was a great and it was a good night as well.

(41:11):
There was plenty of people watching.
And then we are at Nelson this Friday.
So when the podcast will go out tomorrow or today, it will go
out on Friday. So we're at Nelson in the
evening. How are the players looking
forward to the the T20 this yearJoe?

(41:35):
That's a good question. I don't really know.
I mean, I think people people doreally enjoy playing in it
because it's you tend to get good crowds and we get good
crowds anyway. But the more more people come
for the, for the T20 games and you get more casual, casual fans
on as well. It's just a really good
atmosphere, I think and, and it gives people a bit of freedom to

(41:58):
play how they, how they want to and, you know, play with the
really hard pink ball and it goes really far.
I think I've heard, you know, I don't know anything about.
I don't really know anything about, but apparently it goes
far when you hit. It does seem to come off the
back differently. Is there any explanation for

(42:21):
that in your in your view, Joe? I think it's just a harder ball.
It does. It stays harder for longer and
it, it doesn't soften up like a,a normal red Duke ball does.
I mean, we, you know, you get, you get a practise bag of, of,
of balls, you know, that you've used throughout the season,

(42:43):
don't in your carry on. So we've obviously got sets and
A and a normal red set and the, the pink balls, although you
know, they're a little bit scuffed and whatever, they're
still, you could still use them as like spare balls if you
wanted to and they're still really hard.
So I think that's probably, I think that's probably it, I
would say. Yeah, yeah, possibly because it
does no matter where, you know, even it's not just at Law House

(43:06):
or other T 20s within the Election League.
I've watched a few games, you know, locally around Manchester
and it does seem to ping off thebat, whether it's because it's
evening time or or whatever. But no, it's a it's an
interesting subject. Did you ever played in T 20s,
Gaz? No, no, I said I played in one.

(43:26):
They forced me to play in one. Thanks, Gaz.
I can't help you there. It looks like you're getting
you're getting your training offJoe Martin.
The reason I ask is because it'sso early into us.
I remember we that I don't even know if it was a friendly and I
got I got Co opted on to play ina game of corn.

(43:48):
And we were, I think we were wearing something like Chantelle
polo shirts from from from Nicky's works and, you know,
proper shell suit bottoms. I'll never forget it.
But it's changed so much now theway that this smashing.
But it would be good jaw to get back into the that finals
weekend and make up for last last year I guess.

(44:09):
Yeah, I think. We had that.
We had that Express Cup competition that was 16 overs, 4
Ballers, 4 overs. I mean, I mean in that game,
just you. That that was the closest thing
I think we got to the shorter format stuff.
Yeah, OK. And I think that was probably 8

(44:31):
ball overs. I think that's.
Yeah, probably. Yeah, it will.
Like Finals Day all on one evening or one day, wasn't it?
It was, yeah, Berlin, Nelson Coven and those playing in a
semi final during the day. I think it were a bank holiday
and then the final at at night and used to get a lot of people
on if the weather was good, but sometimes when it was freezing

(44:53):
cold and you didn't get anyone on.
But these are the sort of thingswe need to discuss or to get the
people, the spectators to, you know, to come and let us know
what they want to what they wantto hear and tell us about the
guests. We've got this gaffe as
promised. He's got a plan in in place to
get quite a few of the seconds and thirds to come on and talk

(45:17):
about development cricket, whichwill be fantastic.
We're desperate to do whether it's a live podcast or market
risky, but a podcast with the fans in the clubhouse 1 during a
game or or one mid week. So we are working on that.
So I'll move on to a couple of questions we've had in before.

(45:39):
You know, I round up the finish off the podcast and come back to
to Charlie, Joe and Garrett. A question was in about the the
draw the 100 club. How can you, hey, can you join
it? Because I've asked so many
people. This is from someone called Dave
Wells. Dave, we just ask any of us or

(46:01):
ask someone down in the club, Stan or Joe Martin and you can,
you can join it. We have plenty of numbers
available. It's not limited.
It's £5 a month and we pay out it's about £450 a month and then
two bumper prizes of 800. We've got 2 new members for the

(46:21):
for the draw which I will disclose the next actual draw
which will be the end of June. And we spoke there about some of
the spectators that want to get on.
One spectator said, can we do the podcast and do it with some
younger ones? Because we think that you, me

(46:42):
and Joe Martin are taking the Mickey and you and you don't get
on at all. But that's why Joe always
disagrees with you. I don't know what your thoughts
are on John. That joy.
It's anonymous though. Yeah, I mean, I mean, we have a
famous dislike of each other, right?
Just. Yeah, yeah.
We don't really talk or get on and that's why you always sit on

(47:02):
the fence for me. I mean, yeah, that can't be
right, can it? We talk about each other's
tomatoes. Yeah, we do.
About each other's tea. Yeah.
So, but that was anonymous. So they can't even put their
name on. And then before we move on the.
Yeah, exactly, exactly. We had, I think it's been leaked

(47:22):
that Charlie was on the the podcast tonight.
So there's a question for Charlie.
Again, it's anonymous. I apologise.
So you don't have to answer it, Charlie.
But if any house class listenersare in the market for any new
all singing, all dancing purple hair dryers, can Charlie give

(47:45):
them the heads up of where the best place is to buy them?
And I'm not sure what that means.
Charlie, can you can you give usthe heads up of where to buy
them? Yeah, I think that's a story
that probably should share. I think must have been 2021
under Matt Hope, Spellers skipper and think Dukes and they
change your room etcetera. And my then partner I was

(48:06):
meeting a family for the first time and it was after a game of
cricket so I wanted to to look my best to go and meet these and
unfortunately left my own hair dryer in Newcastle so had to
borrow my mum's which was a bad idea in the first instance.
So I wait till fines are over and tried to sneak into the
corner with a bright purple glitter hair dryer and I think

(48:30):
it must have been filagity spotted me from the other end of
the changing room and said what the something is that I think I
must have got fined about 40 lbsfor it.
Over the rest of the season and and right being so in future
I've learned to wear a hat. So for any young lads coming
through at lower house, if you want to look good after a game,
don't do it with a hair dryer. Is that true?

(48:51):
Do you really have a hair? Dryer.
I brought a purple hair dryer once.
Once only. You but I think your comment
just was I left my hair dryer home in Newcastle.
Yeah, yeah, I left my own one there.
Never again. You and Gary, ever been your own
hair dryer drive? Jesus.
Well, I've got to Charlie, I've got to admire your honesty and

(49:16):
and how quite easy it was to getthe confession.
But not only did you confess to set offence, it looks like you
want some tic's as well because you'd previously brought your
own. Yeah, you know, You know what, I
think 20 year old Charlie was quite naive in terms of what the
second team changing rooms wouldbe like and I think Matt Hope

(49:39):
quickly put a stop to that. Brilliant.
Brilliant. No, Charlie, you've accepted
that so well, it's good that youknow the good that we can.
We can laugh and joke about it. And I can assure you, you
probably will be hearing it about it for the next 10 years,
never mind the last two or three.
And. Jason Gary, what's the when you

(50:01):
were playing? What's the What's the strangest
thing anybody pulled out of their kit?
Kit bag? Wow.
If it can be broadcast. What a great question.
I think Phil Astin had about a 30 year old bottle of Old Spice.
I'm not sure if that's classed as strange or more typical, but

(50:24):
yeah, that was odd. Thank you, Gary.
I'll tell you what we mean. You need to think about this
because I've got about 6 already.
Dog chew, Dog chews. Oh dog chews.
Yeah, we don't need to go any further.
No, absolutely. Accrington Cricket Clubs 6 foot

(50:44):
mirror off the wall. Yeah, somebody managed to get
all the way back to lower eyes without realising they had a six
foot mirror in the kit bag. And force the wife to drive it
back. Oh dear.
I mean, the the year we're having this discussion at

(51:04):
weekend and we won't mention thepro, but there's all sorts of
Smints and different hygiene products going in a certain
person's kickback One year Joe that was that was quite maybe
something we could send out to the players that Joe and then
Charlie might feel a lot better at the end of it because he will
take the limelight off him. I think I'd finally just stopped

(51:27):
being fined about that for years.
And so Chase. We'll be able to do like a Radio
Two Bank holiday countdown. Yeah, yeah.
Of the best ones. Yeah, the top top 50 because,
yeah, the the I can't even startto to continue to broadcast
because I'm thinking of other stuff.
I mean, there's a lad and I can mention it.

(51:48):
Your your Uncle Ian had one of the finest metal boxes I've ever
seen that he used to carry around in his bag everywhere.
It's a more dents and and bumps in it proper iron metal box with
like a cream form around the outside that was a beside the

(52:10):
sight to behold itself. But no, Charlie, it's so good
that you know, you can you can embrace that.
And you know, I can't tell you where it's it's come from other
than maybe a bit of a clue. So Nil Warcross.
Yeah, that rings about. If you can.
If you can work a few letters around, but it is it's all good

(52:33):
for. Thanks very much, you guys.
We've been on for nearly an houralready and don't seem to have
we're not made a draw. We've not a Gav or Duke John,
but I've really enjoyed that. Charlie, keep this up, keep it
going, not just with your form and well you're doing with bat
and ball, but also keeping the second team as going and you

(52:53):
know, let's have some fun, whether it's on the podcast, we
can get a few of you on and and keep that going.
Congratulations, you're doing a great job there.
Charlie, any final comments fromyou?
No, no, just cheers for having me on that.
It's been been great. Good luck, Darl.
Thanks for coming on. Joe Martin, you're looking
forward to this weekend. You've got the the T20 tomorrow

(53:15):
against Nelson and then the double header on Saturday and
Sunday. You're looking forward to that?
Yeah, I think this weekend you could describe us as on our
travels again, new way games, how enjoyable are all getting
progressively further away, further away, short trip to

(53:37):
Nelson, slightly longer trip to Rochdale and then you have to
charter a flight to get to Netherfield.
Yeah, it's a long way that yeah, but I'm sure you'll be fine and
I'm sure you'll give all your best.
I think before we cut the cricket side of it off, Joe, the
spectators and listeners will beinteresting to know how Danny's.

(53:59):
We're aware that he's broken hisa small bone in the bottom of
one of his toes. How is that looking?
How did it happen? And you know, have we got a time
scale for for how long that willtake to repair well.
Thankfully we've got a doctor onso we can ask, we can ask him
what he what he needs. It happened on Friday night and

(54:22):
I got jammed on and, and and andbroke his, broke his toe.
I'll be I wasn't paying attention at the time so I
didn't realise that it happened. And when he was walking off
quite gingerly, I thought he pulled his hamstring but
apparently not a small factor ofthe talk.

(54:44):
Charlie, how long are we lookingat?
I'd have to see the images, but I think you know, hopefully, I
mean, doctor will probably say four to six weeks, but you never
know. If he cuts a hole in the end of
his boot, we will see. OK, so there we go.
And I do believe. The medical corner Every week we
get Charlie to discuss medical issues of players.

(55:07):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Myself and my brother Matt are
this first in the queue every week, but I believe that, yeah,
that's the right about right. Charlie has the bone.
Fine. Can I add he's all right?
Yeah, I know, I know. Yeah.
And it's. Raining tonight, you know,
throwing up some stuff so. Good and and getting some pros

(55:27):
is never easy and it's difficultfor Matt Stanley and Ben to work
all that sort of things out. But it is you know, like you
said, I mean the the pro on on Sunday second ball book could
clearly play when you're lookingat these figures and then also
the way bowled. So it is an opportunity to see a
couple of new faces and and not go back to the dark, cold days

(55:48):
of when me and Gary used to be wandering around low timely,
looking for someone who could could come and help us out for
for £25. So it is a little bit of a
difference. And let's hope he's back, you
know, before the end of June andwe can have a real push for, for
all the trophies that are there anything else you want to add
Joe, before we we conclude this episode?

(56:09):
No. Not really.
We've had a thoroughly enjoyabletime, Jess.
Good lad Gary, thanks for comingon again.
You've you're an ever present. Now we might have to have a
recount of every who comes on the most now Gav keeps missing
walking his dog. Anything you want to.
Add Gaz. No, not really.
Thanks Jazz. Apologies.
Just the silence at the start which I was just humouring.

(56:34):
Charlie Gansley. Just give him a bit more
material for his impersonations.Yeah, it's funny that I might as
well just mention it for the spectators and it's unfortunate
that we can't put it out there. 1 drunken night a weekend ago we
had the young lads taking the Mickey out of myself, Gary, Joe,

(56:56):
Gavin Duch and someone recorded it.
But there's far too much swearing and inappropriate
material on it. So I spoke to the culprits at
Weekend Henry, Matt and Charlie, and they're adamant.
They're adamant. They want.
Sorry here, Tom. Yeah, sorry.

(57:18):
When he all goes out for his. Podcast.
Yeah. So Tom Walker, Henry and Charlie
Gansler and the I played it to them and they couldn't stop
laughing, but they were absolutely gutted because of
some of the language. So they really don't want it to
go out there. So we might have to do it again.
But it is funny. Some of the Henry does a

(57:41):
fantastic Joe Martin, it is absolutely fantastic.
But anyway, we'll see if we can get that out there.
We are still early June when we recorded this with another two
or three weeks before we can do the draw.
