Hi, this is Kat O'Leary and you are listening
to another episode of How to BeCreative. So today I'm going to
talk about my process ofwriting affirmations. Um, so
this is one of the things thatI do every day , um, as part of
, uh, ideally my morningroutine. Sometimes it doesn't
happen until, or certainaspects of it don't happen

until a little bit later in theday. Um, but I guess the, the
ideal version is really , um,for me to do these things , um,
kind of before I really startgetting ready for work and ,
um, thinking about the rest ofmy day. So, affirmations for me
are really just a piece ofmindset work. Um, essentially

the value that I get out ofthem is kind of , um, and
especially if I do them firstthing in the morning, trying to
kind of prime my brain attitudemindset for the day , um, from
like, through a positive lensso that , um, I'm coming at it
from that direction. Andregardless of what the day

throws at me, I've at leastsort of , um, you know, done
what I can to ground myselfupfront . So I thought I would
go about this by actually justgoing through writing my
affirmations for the day whileI record and kind of talking
about how I've selected eachone. So a little bit on , um, I

guess how I've structured myaffirmations, and I do write
the same ones every day . Um,in the past I've had them kind
of evolve to where, you know,let maybe , um, one of them, it
feels like something that hasreally just become second
nature to me. Maybe it's notsomething that I need to
actively think about or writein my journal every day that

might fall off the list. Ormaybe there is , um, you know,
something that I'm strugglingwith or an area of growth that
I've ident identified formyself. Um, and I might, you
know, identify , um, anaffirmation that goes along
with that. Recently, the waythat I've been sort of

(02:12):
structuring my list ofaffirmations is that I start
with , um, kind of mindsetfocused a affirmations. So
things that are really aboutkind of how I wanna feel now as
I go through my days , um, and, um, you know, maybe kind of
reminders to self. Um , andthen from there I'll do a set

of vision affirmations. Andthese are more things that I
want for myself in the future,but don't have yet. Um , but I
write them in present tense ,um, as a means of sort of, you
know , kind of trying to trickmy brain into believing that I,
not necessarily believing thatI already have them, but more

(02:54):
believing that I'm the type ofperson who will eventually have
them. Um, and then I finish onanother mindset affirmation
that kind of recenters me inwhere I am now, and , um, helps
me to move through my day fromthe present. So the first
affirmation that I write everyday is I act like I already

(03:16):
have my perfect life. So I likethis one because it's a
reminder to , um, you know,kind of value what I have now
and approach my day to day fromthat mindset, even if there are
gaps between where I am rightnow and where I would ideally
like to be. The secondaffirmation is I am fearlessly

(03:40):
and unapologetically myself,and this is just a reminder for
me to embody one of my values,which is originality. Um, I
think, you know , sometimes inlife there can be , um,
pressure or even temptation toconform or shut down those

(04:01):
parts of you that are different, um, whereas I find that , um,
my life feels the best and mostauthentic to me when I am
actually, you know , fullystepping into who I am,
especially when it doesn'tnecessarily , um, line up with
the ways that other people arethinking or going about things.

(04:25):
And on a similar note, next wehave, in stepping out of my
comfort zone, I step into mypotential. Um, so this one is ,
um, you know, kind of along thelines of being fearlessly and
unapologetically myself , um,in that it is , um, something
that requires a degree ofintentionality , um, in a way

(04:49):
that is kind of somewhat hardand often involves going
against the grain. Um, so forthis , um, it , this one really
just serves as a reminder to me, um, that I don't want to live
a life that is alwayscomfortable. Um, and that a lot
of the best things , um, thathave happened in my life have

(05:12):
really happened once I've kindof crossed over into an area
where I feel a little bit lesscomfortable , um, or, you know,
like I , I'm being stretched abit in terms of my skills. And
then the other thing about thisone , um, that's pretty
meaningful to me is that , uh,so I think, you know, the last

(05:34):
few months or last year maybe,I've really been kind of having
these sort of big pictureinternal conversations with
myself about what I want fromthe rest of my life and how do
I set myself up now? Like, whatare the things I can control
that I can do now , um, toensure that I get those things.

(05:54):
And , um, one of

The results that has come out of that kind of
internal dialogue, I alwayssay, 'cause I'm a Gemini , um,
has been that I've identifiedthat , um, my, like, the
meaning behind my life or, ormy primary goal in life, or
what feels like the reason whyI'm here is really to fulfill

(06:17):
my own potential. And so thisaffirmation serves as a
reminder on a daily basis that, um, you know, in order to ,
uh, fulfill my own potentialstep into my potential, I
really need to be comfortable ,um, doing uncomfortable things
before I move on to the nextaffirmation. I just wanted to

(06:38):
talk a little bit about where Ihave sourced many of these
from. So , um, there may be oneor two that, you know, I kind
of created out of whole cloth.
Um, but for the most part I'veused , um, a few different
resources. Um, so one is , um,just kind of an internet search
for random affirmation lists.

(07:00):
Um, sometimes I will look for,you know , um, affirmations for
, uh, mindset shifts or forgrowth or whatever it is. Um,
but there are also just kind oflike a hundred best
affirmations, that kind ofthing. So Google is your friend
here. I suspect TikTok is alsoa good place to look. I don't

(07:21):
think that I've done anything ,um, myself over there, but
tends to be a pretty solidsearch option for me overall.
Um, another key place, and Iwish I could recall
specifically which ones cameout of this, but , um, last
year beginning, I think on decon , um, January 1st, 2023, I

(07:42):
did this like 40 day emailcourse called the Mantra
Project that's offered by HollyWhitaker and Tammy Salas. And ,
um, both are of whom are reallygreat , um, just really smart
women , uh, very creative, verycool. And basically they just
emailed one affirmation per day, um, with some original art by

(08:08):
Tammy to accompany it. And theway that I used those
throughout the course was thatI would , um, add each day's
affirm affirmation to the listof affirmations that I was
already writing each day, andthen , um, kind of drop things
off that didn't really resonatewith me, but there were some

(08:29):
that I kept on the list thatreally did or kinda felt , um,
appropriate to where I was atthat point. Um , so I would say
a few of them are from thatcourse, and I honestly, as I
said, can't remember which ones, um, but recommend looking
into it. I think it, it may begone forever by now. Um, but if

(08:50):
you look , um, on Holly'ssubstack, which I think is just
, um, under her name, HollyWhitaker , uh, should be, you
should be able to find it. Um,if it is still available,
that's probably the quickestplace to, to locate it. Um, and
then another thing that wasn'treally a resource for sourcing

(09:10):
affirmations as much as aresource for kind of optimize ,
optimize is the wrong word, but, um, refining my affirmation
practice to get more out of itwas a course that I've
mentioned on at least one priorepisode from Jamie Rin , um,
that was called the MagicalThinking Exercise or something

(09:36):
like that. Um, I'll drop itinto the show notes. Um, but
that was really helpful for mein kind of , um, adding some
affirmations in that were lessabout my mindset today and more
about my longer term vision formy life. So with that said, the
next affirmation on my list isby shining my own light, I give

(09:59):
others permission to do thesame. So I like this one
because it is a reminder to methat , um, it's not just about
me. And so if I am feeling like, um, you know, I'm being too
self-promotional, or , um, thatthe , the work that I'm putting
out in the world isn'tmeaningful or , um, it , you

(10:19):
know, that even putting anycreative work out in the world
is somehow self-centered orself-serving , um, this is just
a reminder that by doing thingslike this publicly , um, or,
you know, doing really anythingcreatively , um, publicly, you
are showing other people whatis possible. Um, so if you're

(10:42):
the type of person who maybestruggles with sharing things
that you're working on , um,this could be a helpful
reminder to you. Um, Idefinitely find that , um, you
know, for me, it just kind ofreminds me that like, it , it
kind of almost lets me , um,get out of my own ego drama and

(11:05):
focus on the value that I couldpotentially be providing to
other people, whether it's bydemonstrating consistency , um,
simply demonstrating theability to share one's work
publicly, or even just makingsomeone feel less alone through
the specific content ofwhatever it is that I'm
sharing. And next, we have mychallenges are my greatest

(11:28):
teachers. So I think this is areally valuable one for me,
especially. So at this point inmy affirmation writing each
morning, I tend to startgetting a little angsty about
whatever it is that I have onmy calendar for the day. And
this always serves as a verytimely reminder that regardless

(11:50):
of what it is that I'm upagainst in that , um, you know,
on that particular day , uh,there's probably going to be a
valuable lesson coming out ofit. Um, and this sort of helps
me reorient my thinking aroundthe day ahead so that it's less
dread around, you know,specific things that I don't

(12:13):
wanna do. Maybe it's a meeting,maybe it's , um, a difficult
conversation with someonepersonally , um, that I, I have
been putting off. Um, whateverit is, writing this affirmation
always gets me out of thatheadspace and into one of
valuing an opportunity forgrowth. And then the final

(12:36):
mindset affirmation in thisgroup is I am capable of
manifesting my dreams. Sothat's just a reminder to
myself that what I want inlife, I can get it, it is
possible. Um, and from there ,um, you know, it just kind of
puts me in a head space where I, um, you know, am am more

(12:59):
optimistic. Okay. So fromthere, I move into what I call
vision affirmations. And I'mnot gonna go through all of the
specific ones that I write ,um, partly just for my own
privacy. Um, but for these, andthis again is , um, the , uh,

(13:22):
process that I got from JamieBarron's magical thinking
ritual. Um, but basically Istarted by making a list of ,
um, you know, a few things thatI want in my life that I don't
have yet. And then I assignedan affirmation that I wrote ,

(13:43):
um, for each of them . Um, sofor example, if you , um, you
know, you wanna travel more,you wanna be like very well
traveled, you could write like,I travel internationally every
quarter or something like that.
So the key is to write them asthough already presently true.

(14:06):
So for me, for example, I willgive one , um, real example.
Um, one of mine is I go toParis every year, so I love
Paris. Um, I went already thisyear. Um, I didn't make it
there last year. I did go forabout 10 days in 2022 for my
birthday. Um, but I just feelvery at home in Paris and would

(14:28):
like to make going to Paris.
Um, part of, you know, things Ido every single year. So , um,
for me, I'm kind of lucky inthat I live in New York, so
it's a relatively easy and notcrazily expensive flight. Um,
the good things, the good thingabout European cities like

(14:48):
Paris is that there are a lotof inexpensive , um, boutique
hotels. And so that is sort ofan achievable thing for me. Um,
I'd say it's like one of thethings that are on the list of
vision affirmations that , um,it just feels like one of the
easiest to achieve , um, fromwhere I am right now. Um,

(15:10):
whereas there are some othersthat , um, maybe are a little
bit, you know, more oflong-term goals for me. Um, so,
you know, for example, if likeyou want to be a published
author, you might write, I am apublished author, or , um, if

(15:31):
you want to be an entrepreneur,you could write, I am an
entrepreneur, and I'd probablyget a little bit more specific
, um, you know, with thingsthat are relevant to , um, the
types of work that you wannado. So if you want to start a
tech company, I would write,you know, I'm a successful tech
entrepreneur. Or if you want towrite a book about your

(15:56):
experience as an au pair in theuk , um, you could write an
affirmation based on that. Soit's really , um, very personal
in terms of what makes sensefor you. Like, what is your
vision for your life, and , um,and then how do you translate
that vision into a list ofpresent tense affirmations that

(16:18):
you can write every day untilyou have achieved those things.
And then once I'm done with thevision affirmations, I close
out with one final mindsetaffirmation, and that is I meet
every day with high vibrationenergy. The purpose of this
affirmation and the purpose ofclosing with it specifically is

(16:41):
to reground myself in thepresent after writing out those
vision based affirmations. Um,and also to remind myself , um,
because kind of similar to ,um, you know, what I mentioned
earlier with my challenges aremy greatest teachers. I, you
know, by the time I'm wrappingup my affirmative writing for

(17:03):
the day, it is just about timefor me to get in the shower ,
um, get ready for my commute towork , um, and to sort of shift
my brain into sort of my day today and starting to , you know,
I find myself kind of startingto stress about , um, you know,
certain aspects of that day orweek. Um, and so this

(17:28):
affirmation I use as a tool for, um, reminding myself that one
thing I can control, eventhough there may be many things
throughout the day or week thatI cannot control, is that , um,
I can control my energy. Andit's pretty much always true
that if I step into my day withthe best possible energy, I

(17:54):
will have a better dayregardless of, you know, the
specific external circumstancesthat I might have to deal with.
So that is how I go about myaffirmation writing. Again, I
do these every day . Um, I have1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,

(18:15):
11, 12, 13 that I now writeevery day. Um, it still only
takes me about, probably onlyfive minutes or so to write all
of these. Um, and , um, I dofind that it, it does help put
me in a better mindset to takeon whatever the day has in

(18:36):
