(00:06):
How? Many Now the making of a good
compilation tape is a very subtle art.
Many do's and don'ts. First of all, you're using
someone else's poetry to expresshow you feel.
This is a delicate thing. You got to kick it off with a
killer grab attention. Then you got to take it up
(00:27):
enough you don't want to know your walk.
Then you got to. Cool it off a notch and.
There are a lot of rules. The problem with the best sample
song is that you knocked it out of the park so hard with
gorillas that I don't know what's even close Like that was
(00:48):
it couldn't have been better. I thought, are you talking about
samples? Yeah, I picked gorillas for
features. Shit, never mind.
See, now we're already off to a bad start to mix it.
It's a lot. It's a lot of, it's a lot of
songs, man. Dude picking 12 sucks.
So you're not feeling so hot, huh?
I'm under the weather. I'm at the end of it.
(01:10):
I've been at the tail end of it for like a day.
I got real sick like Monday lastweek and like now it's just like
this residual cough that won't go away.
It's probably long COVID. It's.
Been going on, I was on AI, was on a work call yesterday and the
person I was on the call with isalso getting over it.
But she said that it feels like she's broken a rib because she's
(01:31):
been coughing so much. You're like dude, Roost.
I literally had that last night.Like I'm driving home from work
last night and I'm coughing in the car and I'm like, God, did
I? Did I just give myself a hurt of
you? Yeah, I think that's not funny.
It's funny, but it's not funny. It's not funny, but it's funny.
Yeah, I get it. Are you?
You know what's crazy is I thinkof about 700 things.
(01:53):
All right? I got my last.
I got my last one. Oh, wait.
Yeah, I got. Game time decisions happening
over here. Game time decisions this is.
Season. Three, this is a shit show.
Closing out season 3's Flying bythe seat of our pants.
Yep, I think of so many good questions that I want to ask
you. Like just in passing, like I'm
like, oh, that'd be a good question, asked Rod.
Yeah, I love. And then things I love about
you. And then you've.
(02:14):
Always got the questions. I don't write them down and then
I'm like, yeah. Do you have any of them?
Do I have a better? Job of like, open it in the
notes tab. Yeah, OK, I should do that.
And have it in all the time notes tab.
It shouldn't be all on you to come prepared with Ice Breakers
and conversation pieces. I that's true shared experience.
All right, here we go. Ready.
(02:34):
Rapid fire, One way answer. Sports game or museum?
Sports game. Hot or cold?
Cold. Beaches or mountains?
Mountains. Pizza or burgers?
Burgers. Night owl.
Early Bird. Night Owl.
Journey your destination. Journey pancakes or waffles?
Pancakes. Big day out, quiet night in.
(02:57):
Quiet night in. Crunchy or creamy?
Creamy. That's the right answer.
OK. Bright and sunny or overcast and
rainy? Sunny.
Talk to animals or learn to fly.Talk to animals.
Pause time or rewind it. Rewind it.
Friday nights or Sunday mornings?
(03:17):
Sunday mornings. Donuts or bagels?
Donuts. Salty or sweet?
Dude that's fucking. That's the hardest 1 yet.
Both same time. Sweet.
Midwesterl Mix. Favorite Fortune?
Fortune. Driver.
Passenger. Driver.
Group or solo? Group.
(03:40):
That's all I got. OK.
Do we have to do, are we doing all for you?
No, That's that's no. That's OK.
That's just for you. We should, we should do one of
those for you on the next episode.
So though with different questions, I'll do a rapid fire
for you with different ones. OK.
Which ones of mine that I just did surprise you?
Driver surprise me. Well, it's because you're always
the driver when when we're together, but I'm always well.
(04:00):
I mean, in our setting, yeah, but I'm just saying like in
life, I. Don't know man, I'm I'm I'm
usually driving the driving force behind so.
That's what I'm saying. Do you want to be the driver or
would you want to be like, hey, I want to be in charge of the
ox, I want to be the passenger. I want to stare out the window
at the sites I go by, or I want to be the one steering the
journey. I know I tend to be like a low
key guy because I'm introverted and stuff, but I am definitely
(04:22):
the guy that like I will take over the music when it's not
good enough and not even I'll just go do it.
And I will drive physically drive cars most of the time and
I will not always. I'll let other people make
decisions, but usually how that goes is people can't make a
decision. Then I'll be like, this is what
we're doing. So, yeah, driver, very good.
All right, so for listeners, if you're not a regular listener,
(04:44):
this is Season 3, the close of Season 3.
We call it the unlucky ones because Don.
We are. We just get right into shit.
I don't even get to tell you. No, we're not getting.
Into because the ice machine. Oh, OK.
No, we're not getting into it yet.
I'm just prefacing why I'm aboutto do and about what I'm about
to do. OK, I do that.
So Don and I are going to make amixtape of songs that could have
(05:06):
been on all the other mixtape episodes.
This a mix tape's worth of songsthat just missed the cut.
However, we did have a bonus episode this season which was
our anniversary episode because we hit our one year anniversary.
Tony, Tony. Tony.
I have an unlucky audio clip of somebody that got it to me late
with a question. Oh cool, that's fun.
So we even have an unlucky anniversary clip, so I'm going
(05:26):
to play that. Now we've got a question to
answer. OK.
Hey fellas, Mike Adams here. Congratulations on your first
anniversary. Here's to 100 more.
Better late than never. My question for you is, in your
personal listening habits, how do you know when you want to
reach for a mix tape versus reaching for someone's full
album? Such a feeling.
(05:47):
Like for you, how do you know when you're in the mood for a
mix tape? That is such a good question.
How do you know you're in the mood for mix tape?
This is really funny. I I was feeling all nostalgic
the other day and I was getting off the plane and walking
through the airport in O'Hare and for some reason, as I'm
doing this and said, I was like,I have to listen to Bleed
(06:09):
American right now. Nothing happened.
Like nothing prompted me, but I needed to hear that song, those
songs in that order at that moment.
And like as I'm walking from theplane to the L train and then
the L train to my destination oftravel, it was like, this is the
soundtrack that what needs to happen in this moment right now.
(06:31):
So I guess it's just a feeling for me.
Yeah, I struggled when I was, again, I I heard the question
already, so on end I'd had time to think about it and you
didn't, which isn't exactly fair.
But I struggled at first with this because music is so
emotional. It's just whatever mood hits
you. And sometimes like you said,
like I just have to listen to this song or I just have to
(06:51):
listen to this album or sometimes the mood is a mood and
that a mixtapes are good for that, right?
Like here's a vibe I can put on a mixtape.
But my honest answer is time. If I'm busy or on the go or
something, a mixtape is easy to put on and you get a variety and
you can skip something you're not into and get something
completely different. So it's time because when I have
(07:13):
time to really listen, I tend togo for albums.
Like if I'm cooking, I'll put analbum on.
If I'm just just, if I'm going on a walk and I just want to
listen to music, I usually put on an album.
But if I'm just, if I'm in a hurry, like I'm driving from
point A to point B and it's a 10minute drive, I'm sticking some
kind of like mix on. That's my, that's my answer.
(07:35):
But it's not, it's not as exact as that, you know, it's not
always that way. So, yeah, it's a great question
though, Mike. Like, I find more often than
not, sometimes I feel bad when Iam ignoring what's playing in
the background. Like, I don't, I have a hard
time with background music because I usually want to pay
attention to what's playing. Yeah.
(07:55):
Like, we both work retail. So when there's like, I am so
good at ignoring music that's playing in the background that I
don't want to listen to. So it's frustrating when it's
like I'm doing stuff around the house and I throw on a playlist
and it's like, oh, I want to be listening to this, but instead
I'm focused on scrubbing the toilet.
Yeah, it was a bandwidth thing. Yeah, I have.
(08:16):
I've been having trouble lately just citing what to listen to
period. Like, I don't know if you go
through those periods, but lately, like I've really
struggled to even decide what music to put on, whether it's an
album or like a mix of something.
I'll just, I'll just sit and like flip through my my Spotify
playlists and my artists and stuff.
And I don't know, it's been weird lately.
(08:36):
Nothing struck me specifically. I wonder if it's because the
weather's been so freaking up and down, dude.
It was like, I think. That's why I'm sick.
It was like hitting spring and there was cold and there was
spring and there was cold and then it rained and then it
fucking snowed and then it was 66 here and then it was like
what is going on? Yeah, yeah.
But I got a case of the full spring ready for ready for warm
(08:56):
weather. If listeners didn't go listen to
the anniversary episode, I highly recommend it.
I thought it was a lot of fun. It was a lot of stuff like that.
It was a lot of questions that we answered and and some
comments from people. And I've gotten really good
feedback on that episode from people.
They were stoked and. Here it is just you and I again.
Just you and me again. Yeah, yeah.
Obviously the sample of just thetwo of us, either the original
(09:17):
or the featured one with Will Smith and Jayden.
Probably the the featured one because I think I did we play
this one before last time it wasThe Golden Girls.
(09:40):
Oh, that's right. That's so perfect.
So perfect. And you were dressed like Ted
Lasser. I.
Was dressed like Ted Lasser. Yeah, was.
That fucking Halloween. Is that how long ago it?
Was Halloween That was yeah, that was into season 2.
Feels like eternity. You go.
Yeah, So what? What else do you got?
You said you had one more thing.I heard the word ice.
Ice did. I not hear the word ice.
I was complaining about something you.
(10:01):
Were saying you were you. You didn't want to get the mix
tape going yet because you had something else.
Yep, Yep. You get that brain fog going,
don't you? You got that?
I'm recovering from sick. So I was on the plane flying
home from DC like I'm, I'm so congested, right?
Like I'm slightly better now, but I probably still sound a
little nasally. But when I was flying home, I
(10:21):
am. I already feel so guilty because
I'm the sick guy on the plane, right?
And I'm messed up, you know? You got, you got to do it, you
know? Which sucks because now I'm
struggling to breathe. I'm coughing into this mask and
like my nose is running. So like the top of the mask is
fucking wet. It's like it couldn't be
grosser, right? I can feel like an asshole and
(10:41):
it is just a cold. Like, it's not like it's nothing
more than that. I just have a cold, you know, if
I take cold medicine, I feel better for two hours and then
the I wait two hours feeling shitty for me to be able to take
my next dose of cold medicine. Yeah.
So. Oh, I remember we were talking.
We talked about a bunch of stuff.
I also watched. Wait, where was I going?
(11:03):
Oh, and so the pressure of the plane as well as the congestion,
I felt like my fucking head was going to explode.
I was pretty sure my head was going to explode on the
airplane. And then that would have been a
way bigger situation. It's a.
Horrible feeling when you're, especially when you're landing
or like when the pressure's really changing, dude.
It was so bad. Sometimes legitimately feels
like your your sinuses are goingto explode.
(11:23):
Yeah. And then the.
Second thing is that we talked about movies to not watch on an
airplane. Have you seen my old ass?
No Adorable movie. Adorable movie.
Aubrey Plaza. So premise of the movie, 18 year
old girl works on her family's farm getting ready to go away to
college, going through what every 18 year old does and
(11:46):
decides that she's going to do shrooms with a couple of her
friends and does shrooms and meets herself at 39 like on her
shroom trip and herself at 39. Puts her contact information in
her phone so they communicate through the whole movie.
Wild 18th. Self and 39th Self is that is
(12:07):
that main character Aubrey Plazaor is it somebody else?
No. Aubrey Plaza is like the
secondary character I've seen. Clips of So I've seen clips of
Is there a scene where they meet?
Around the fire where? They're like together and they
meet Nick Kroll's character. Is he in it?
OK, never mind. I just saw a clip of a movie The
other day where this woman and Nick Kroll are in, like, the
desert. And Nick Kroll's talking to this
(12:28):
young woman. And the older 1 was like, who
are you talking to? And he's like that, that young
woman sitting right next to you and she's like, you can see her.
And the conversation is that that's her projection of her
younger self, and nobody else has ever been able to see her or
something like this, this whole weird thing.
And I was like, what am I watching right now?
But OK, so that's a different movie then.
OK, but. My old.
Ass. My old ass, it's very sweet,
(12:51):
it's very funny. It does pull at the heartstrings
a little bit. There were some bouncy shoulders
on the plane, like as as Certainmoments were starting to get me,
but it was a great but. Is it one that I could watch on
the plane and be like, mostly, mostly smile?
I'm not going to start bawling. Mostly smiles and laughs.
See, this is what I need. I need, I need.
I don't just need movie recommendations.
I need specifically movie recommendations for airplanes
(13:13):
like I want one for a flight. This is more of this in my life.
Comment on this episode please and give Don and I because like
I, I find myself just re watching movies I've seen before
to not take the risk. That's exactly what I did on my
way there was I watched The Wedding Singer.
Yeah, you, you watch something familiar because it's it's less
risky. Right, but.
Sometimes I do want to watch something new and I don't know
(13:35):
what to watch. I mean, you're just guessing,
you know? I've had two in a row that were
bad choices and that they were both really good movies.
Do a bad. Plan.
Yeah, I know. But last last flight I was on, I
went through the action movies and everything was.
Like. Just not not good so.
And you don't you do just what'sprovided to you on the plane.
(13:56):
You don't download shit going into it.
I. I I do both.
I I'll I do both. I usually come with a handful of
things downloaded, but the problem is the download ones.
I try to save action movies thatare downloadable for my
streaming services because that's what I watched at the
gym. That helps me get through
workouts. Is is watching action, like act
things that you don't have to think about at all.
(14:17):
And it's just exciting in action.
So my brain is focused on that and not what it feels like at
the gym. You know what I'm saying?
So I try not to waste the actionmovies on planes so much.
Comedies are good for planes. I recently watched them Zero
Dark 30 at the gym. Did you?
Yeah, stuff like that. Never saw it before.
It's like what the fuck? And that's, you know, based on a
(14:38):
true story. I just watched I got.
No business with this the. Mechanic Resurrection, which was
the sequel to the Mechanic, which was a really bad action
movie in the 1st place. Jason Statham, one of those like
I used, I used to be an, I used to be an assassin and now
they're trying to rope me back in, but there's a woman
(14:58):
involved. Uh oh.
Like, you know the, you know themovie.
And I watched the bank job recently too with I just went on
a Jason Statham kick cause consistency, consistency with
that guy, you know? What you're going to get, I
hope. I hope the Meg works its way in
there somehow. I've never seen the Meg, man.
I've avoided that because I'm like, God damn, I'll probably
watch it. What do you mean I'll probably
do it. I'll do it.
Giant shark. The Meg Giant.
(15:20):
Shark, come on. I'd rather watch deeply.
It's not a shark, it's a megalodon.
Oh. Sorry, Megalodon, you want to
get this thing kicked off? Yeah.
Let's talk about music. Do you like little gimmicks?
I can make that happen for you. How was that?
No. We need to know like what is it?
(15:40):
So I make stickers for people and companies alike.
I've been working with tattoo shops and clothing brands making
their stickers for them. So if you have a small business
or a tattoo shop or a clothing brand or a podcast that you want
to advertise for, there's big things from little gimmicks and
the fact that you haven't used that once.
And the tagline for the Instagram is a fucking
(16:02):
abomination. See.
I'm purposely not doing that. I don't want you to have any
stamp on what I'm actually trying to accomplish here.
What a Dick, Doug. If they mentioned how to make a
mixtape podcast, what do they get?
They get. 10% off their order. There we go
doug@littlegimmicks.com. That's the best way for me to
see your request. Big things from little gimmicks.
Buy some stickers, maybe B minus, sometimes good, sometimes
(16:24):
maybe shit. I've.
Loved our stickers. I slapped those things on a lot
of urinals and they they've beenfucking great.
Hold up, hold up to piss great. There's your average, there's
your new tagline. That's.
The that's the advertisement, that's.
That's the tagline. Little gimmicks they hold up to
piss great. So I I'm going to sequence this
mixtape at the end and I go first because you went first in
(16:48):
the last unlucky ones. Double thank God.
So do you have the the random generator thing ready to go?
Fucking not a chance. That's your job on these, man.
I don't know how. You do it, yeah.
I got it. So I'm just going to pause and
wait for you. What is our What's our episodes
through numbers episodes #25 it.Is. 25 through 3820. 726 was the
(17:14):
last unlucky 1, so it's 27 through 38, OK. 27 through 38
let me know when you're ready I'm.
Ready. OK.
Go 28 Sweater weather Sweater weather my.
Sweater weather pick is the zombies.
She's not there. But it's too late to say you're
(17:35):
sorry. How would I know?
Why should I care? Please don't bother trying to
find her. She's not there.
Well, let me tell you about the way she looked, the way she had
turned, the color of her hair. Her voice was soft and cool, her
eyes were clear and bright. Which was one of my honorable
(17:58):
mentions. So.
You did I. Asked you if you picked your
honorable mentions and I. Said I picked 2.
I said I picked 2 and this is one of them.
So this song, do you know the zombies?
Do you like the zombies? Oh.
Yeah, oh God, yeah, the zombies is live for today as well,
right, They had. A few hits.
They weren't ever like massive. I feel like they got bigger
after they weren't a thing anymore.
They did time of the season, summertime, and she's not there
(18:22):
and you. Pick.
She's not. There's yourself I pick.
She's not there. I don't think they did live for
today. It's not coming up.
What did you? Live for today.
But the Zombies have that like their names appropriate because
even though they're kind of thatold, old style rock'n'roll like
early Beatles kind of vibe like that stuff, it's got this edge
of like creepiness to it, you know the.
Grassroots did live for today, yeah.
(18:43):
The grassroots. So they just feel very, you
know, autumn to me. Yeah.
It's like, it's the, it's the like creepy side of autumn, the
autumnal, like Halloween. Vibe.
Thing yeah so it's got that great beat the in that song
that's great I love like a vocalpercussion in a song this might.
(19:04):
Have been the first introductionof Who's Your Daddy as well.
Yeah, I mean, do. You know, if who's your daddy
exists anywhere prior to this, that's the that's the time of
the season that's. The time of the season, yeah.
Which show? So.
So is the percussive thing. I just, I'm, I'm we're talking
about a different zombie song. Both of us, man.
We are on it today, man, we are on it today.
(19:25):
I just do. I want to switch it to time of
the season then. Switch it to time of the season,
you know. What I'm switching it to time of
the season. What's your name?
(19:51):
Who's your? Daddy, I like she's not there.
Which? Is also a great autumnal song
it. Really is, you know what we're
both talking about time of season.
Let's just make it time of the season.
Time of the season. So it's time of the season now.
It's got that percussive thing, it's got that door's esque
keyboard in it, it's got who's your daddy in it that might.
Have been the 1st that hey, you know what that might have been
(20:12):
the first time first instructionof who's your daddy.
It might have been. I mean, there's a lot of songs,
a lot of songs did that creepy like Daddy reference back in
early rock'n'roll, but I don't know if anybody ever said who's
your daddy? Yeah, man, there's like little,
everything's like little girl this.
You've noticed that about like 50s rock'n'roll and stuff.
It's a lot of like referring to women as like little girl and
(20:34):
stuff. I guess it's because it's all
written from like high schoolersperspectives, all those old like
rock'n'roll songs, you know I'll.
Have you know that I'm getting so good at muting my coughs
right now and muting my nose blows, Yeah.
Everybody Don just blew his noseand didn't make a sense, didn't
make a peep, didn't make a peep. It's like anything that would be
on the American Graffiti soundtrack is calling women like
(20:56):
little girl and stuff and feels like that was a creepy, weird
thing they used to do. But yeah, maybe it is.
I went. A little on the nose with my
sweater weather song. What was?
Your soda weather song going to be.
Fall Children by AFI you. Know the.
All Hollows VP, which is my second AFI contribution to a
mixtape. But I I like, I don't love using
(21:17):
artists twice. There's enough artists that we
shouldn't have to use artists twice.
There's enough music that we shouldn't have to.
But they are usually linked to like we're both doing a bad job
Gotham. But they are linked to like
individual stories. So nothing says sweater weather
like the all Hollows VP. I don't mind repeat artists, you
know, sometimes, like I, I agree.
(21:38):
Trying. To avoid it, what about?
Direct picks of repeat songs directly you yourself have
contributed by. The same person shouldn't happen
and yet I've done it and and yeah, I know this season, but I
repeat artists like if it fits for the mixtape, it fits for the
mixtape. I do agree and I think we both
do a good job of trying to not pick artists multiple times.
But it's going to happen with guests though because we can't
(22:00):
expect guests to know every single song picked on the show
so it's going to happen. They don't.
Have access to our Google doc. Yeah, and AFI is perfect.
Of course AFI fits this. And by the way, if you Google
the first song to say who's yourdaddy, according to the AI
overview from Google, it says the phrase who's your daddy has
been used in songs since at least 1968, but the phrase dates
(22:22):
back to 1681. Sex workers used to use the
phrase it's the 17th century, but the first song, according to
Google, is the zombies time of the season in 1968.
Well done. Done.
Yeah, first time. 1st. Time you suit your daddy in the
song. Well done.
All right. So that one's that one's done.
Next, next song. Random number generator ready go
(22:46):
31. 31 is deck the hall, so the tree decorating Christmas one.
Tree Decorating Christmas 1 was Donde Esta Santa Claus by Augie
Rios. Mamacita,
(23:20):
Mamacita. Yeah, man.
Augie, Augie. The, I heard this for like the
first time, like in my late 30s.Yeah.
And then I had I went down this massive rabbit hole of trying to
find out why, trying to find outwhy the reindeer have different
names. A bunch of oblixen.
(23:42):
A Pedro Oblixen Ole Ole Ole. Yeah.
What'd you find it was is it notjust a joke?
I thought it was just like a cultural joke thing.
It's not a joke, it's just different, different words
that's made its way I. Guess I.
Think. Christmas lore is bananas it.
(24:02):
Is wild dude like all the different cultural things Kris?
Kringle, Krampus. Bufana.
She's the she's the witch in Italy.
Who in Italy there's a witch too.
Bufana, dude. Yeah, there's all kind of.
Shoes out and. There's Black Pete in one.
Is it Norway with black beat I? Don't know dude.
Don't go down that rabbit. They still it's like a it's been
(24:23):
a big thing lately because the Black Pete costume is people
putting blackface on. Oh.
That's not dude people get. Mad and then they're like, no,
it's but it's called, it's different.
It's different and then people are like, bull is not different
because you're still putting blackface on is.
Yeah, dude, Christmas lore is absolutely wild.
Christmas. Lore is nuts.
Where did coal come from? Why?
Why are you getting coal in yourstocking if you're bad?
(24:44):
Is it just like the shit that hefound in the bottom of the
fireplace? Why does Santa come down a
chimney? Do you have a chimney in your
house? No.
Did you have a chimney in your child at home?
I don't I. Never had a chimney like.
I think for a child. That's genuine concern of like
wait hold on mom, we don't have a chimney how is this man going
to get into our house to leave presents for me I.
Think that's why it was a chimney though, because back
(25:04):
back in the day it probably was like well how did does Santa get
in We lock our door and then there was like well he comes
down the chimney okay and then chimney started to go away.
Every house had to have a chimney at one point.
That's how you heated your house.
But. I guess.
I think the coal, I'm making this up, but I think the coal is
probably like that era's versionof socks.
Like you get a gift that isn't fun.
(25:26):
It's utilitarian because you weren't good, so now you're just
going to help heat the house or something like that.
It's like socks now. Like no kid wants socks or
underwear. They want a toy.
I I could be making that up. I well, I am making that up, but
I could be right. I could be wrong.
I just pulled from my ass So, somuch wild.
Laura, I had Andy Williams. It's the most wonderful time of
(25:46):
the year. Oh.
That's really good. That's great Christmas tree
weather. And I'm so happy that I'm back
to feeling good about Christmas.I'm excited.
Christmas for this year, yeah. You only got, you know, nine
months to go, but hold. On a second Alexa, how many days
is it until Christmas? Christmas.
Is in 292 days 200. And 92 days 2. 92, Baby 2. 92
(26:08):
Did she? Just give you the date of
Christmas, yeah? December 25th, 2000.
OK, thanks. I can mark that on my calendar,
make sure I don't which day it is this year.
Thanks. Amazon Woman.
Next OH. Number generator, random number
generator and go 33. 33 is bye bye bye.
So that was the best of 2024. I had high viz.
(26:31):
Mine's a lie, do. You want to give us a chance?
To try cross the line just to get by, it's off the field.
We've rinsed to try. What?
(26:54):
Is truth when your mind's a lie? What is truth when your.
Mind's a lie. Oh, I can't wait till it's not
so. High Viz, have you heard them
before? Do you know them?
No. So High Viz is auk band.
They're like, they're like, they're like a punk band.
(27:17):
You know, it's, it's, it's punk rock, but it's your song.
Mine's a lie. Which is.
Off their new record, which is not a very punk rock song, which
is why I like it, they they their new record started to
incorporate elements of like post punk, like, you know, Joy
Division and the Cure and stuff like that a little bit with even
almost like indie rock pop stuff.
(27:38):
But they still, their singer still has this like really raw
punk vocal tune and stuff. But the record they put out this
year is just really, really good.
It's it's like all these punk bands that are starting to do
artsy stuff like Idols and Tyvizand like Fontaine's DC and these
bands have been. Around too long 2018 or some of
their first releases so no for. Sure.
(27:59):
And it's just. A new band that's cool they.
Are they are and they're just really talented and this this
record got a little buzz for sure.
I think it got a mention on that.
Did you listen to that 2024 draft that was like Yossi, Rob
and one of the other guys like to producer guys that the.
Last one that I listened to for the draft was Soundtracks.
Did they draft soundtracks? They drafted soundtracks.
(28:22):
Yeah. So this is before this was a New
Year's thing they did and they did that.
They did this basically like we did.
And one of them had high vis either on their list or as an
honorable mention. So it's got enough a little bit
of buzz, but it didn't like makea huge splash over in the US
necessarily outside of certain kind of circles.
But it's really good shit. People shouldn't listen to High
Vis if you're if you're in a punk and heavy stuff, you'd like
(28:44):
him. If you're not.
If you're into more like just edgy, I guess I'll call it
indie. I think you like Hibiz too.
Edgy indie. I can't wait to see that pop up
on our Google doc of OF. Styles.
Of music because you've really done a great job of Banda AL 9
being described as foreign rock and also Phantom Gram being
(29:05):
Electro indie. Electro indie, that's what it
is. Yeah, and I love that.
Also face to face DAF sampler isFrench house so you're really
killing the Daft Punk. Is French house that's what it
is. Damn it, I.
Know I'm trying, I'm recognizingyou.
I appreciate. That.
Genuinely that our genre category has gotten so deep of
(29:29):
different styles of genres and the goal was to say who does a
better job picking more genres of music and the.
Longer we go on it's it's irrelevant because we've all
picked, we've both picked so many different genres now at
this point, but new. Found glory in Here is Easycore.
That one's a little tongue in cheek because they kind of
invented that genre as a joke, but now people actually
reference that style of pop punkas easycore, so.
(29:52):
Got. It, you know, if somebody picks
all time low, I'll put that as Easycore too.
You know I love that. All right, who are you going?
To pick so sorry, what was your 2024 best of Oh?
See, I want to do Teddy Swims, but that album that he put out
came out late 23. But I was going to do Teddy
Swims and I was going to do I lose control because that song
is just such a good like blue eyed soul song.
(30:15):
Like he crushes that song I bought.
His Christmas album this year? Oh.
On vinyl it's good, but that album technically came out in 23
so I can't do Lose Control. His name a song can't do that.
Also billion listens on that onealready.
Jesus Christ, good for you, Teddy swims.
I guess you don't have to have every, but what's that?
Because I picked it? I guess you don't have to have
one that actually came out in 2020, no?
(30:36):
That's OK, but my second choice we talked about at the beginning
of the last episode was Spirit World.
Oh. Yeah, yeah.
Cool. Western stars and the
apocalypse, and they're fucking rad.
Like, I've been listening to that more when the time fits.
Yeah. Spirit World was a blast for
stumbling onto that one. Yeah.
Number generators. All right, number generator.
(30:56):
My turn right your. Turn.
Go 30. 30 All about the bass. I wanted this one bad.
I wanted this one. Was this your favorite episode
we've ever done? It's such.
A hard question. It's my.
It was my Yes, I think it is. Yeah.
I think, let me, let me rephrase.
I didn't have the most fun recording it.
(31:17):
I had a great time recording it.I wouldn't say it was the most
fun though, because I it was there was a lot of pressure, a
little nervous. There were.
Nerves for sure, I think. It was our probably our highest
quality output of an episode. That's what that's what I'll
say. I think this is the best thing
we've made. I.
Don't ever want to tell Doug that he's done not Doug's little
gimmicks Doug, but other Doug. I don't ever want to tell other
(31:38):
Doug that he's done a good job at anything because I don't know
he how he carries that big fucking head is around.
But how to make a mix plate? Like I feel like that was my
strongest showing as well as just an incredible fucking
episode. Yeah, great theme.
Everybody had good time with that one.
Everybody. Had good songs like that is a
(31:59):
great mixtape, but my second like there was a lot of pressure
going into the Rob Harvilla episode just we're recording
with somebody that we're we're both really stoked to spend time
with I I. Would also throw out just fun
recording. I think the first episode with
with Jess where everything went fucking horrible in hindsight is
(32:20):
now fun. At the time was not and then Meg
the one the one we just did lovesongs only she said was Meg was
blast. She's awesome.
I had a great time doing that episode.
So good and and I'm I'm with youon the BBQ.
The mix plate one was a fuck, was a blast to record.
Yeah, when Doug comes base if he, if he doesn't even come, if
he doesn't take it up a notch. Never a three time guest for
(32:44):
Doug I. Think he is already going to
take it up a notch because he already knows his next theme and
it's on the books? Well, it's not on the calendar
yet, but it's on the What's coming up bass.
Line I went with cool songs. I think for my first all about
the bass episode, you know, likelike I didn't I take that back.
I didn't go with cool songs, butI went with like very personal
(33:06):
songs that I love bass lines from.
And I'm going to go so on the nose and say Smooth Criminal by
Michael Jackson. I I'm into it because it was one
(33:43):
of my, it wasn't what Billie Jean was one of my honorable
mentions on that episode, but Smooth Criminal was was, you
know, that was on my list. I was debating but it's
fantastic dude. Yeah.
Like it's a little bit more likeI don't know what would you,
what would you describe it as a little bit more commercially I
think acceptable. Sure.
More, as you know, a few of the other ones were a little bit
(34:05):
more like these are the cool kids songs.
I'm going to put Lacquer Head byPrimus on here.
Whereas like, shit, there's nothing wrong with Smooth
Criminal, but Michael Jackson? Absolutely.
Not it shouldn't matter. And what a what a baseline, you
know, Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
I mean, that's. What it was about great bass
line. I like that the bass line is not
is the bass and the melody. I want to look cool.
The fact that he didn't know a lot of Primus made me feel kind
(34:27):
of cool. Yeah.
Yeah. Should it have?
No. Absolutely not.
But I But it did I. Like to imagine that he just
listens to Cavin to antenna by Cavin now.
And I don't know if he does, butI feel like we talked it up a
lot and I somewhere in my in my gut, he's out there driving his
kids around listening to antennaby cave in because.
(34:47):
I hope that he's listening to Antenna by Cave In while wearing
some of his How to make a mixtape apparel I.
Hope so too. We listened to something he did
one of the new episodes and you and I had the I listened to it
and had the same thought. And then you text me and you
were like, do you think he said that because of our he was
talking? About Incubus, he.
Was talking about incubus. He.
Was talking about the bass player of Incubus.
(35:09):
Which came up on an episode and I'm.
Hoping that that is what led himto that, but I don't know what
his timelines look like. No idea.
But. I'm, yeah, I was talking about
Dirk Lance from Inquis. I'm taking credit for that.
I'm saying I influenced how to make a mix tape or no?
I influenced 60 songs well. I had what was yours?
I it's it's been an honorable mention twice to this point.
(35:31):
And so that's kind of 1/3 time, but I was going to do Redbone.
Come get your love. So I've got to get that on a
freaking mixtape, man, so I can stop thinking about it.
So I guess we'll see if I end upwith love songs or not on this.
Although I had another song downfor that, so maybe I'll audible.
I don't know what's next that. Is a great fucking baseline.
What? Smooth Criminal or?
No, Come and get your love. Get.
Your love, isn't it good baseline?
(35:52):
It's a great baseline Doo. Doo Doo Doo.
Great, there's some great fucking photos and I'm too on
Spotify. God damn.
OK, back to the random number generator.
Ready. Go 27. 27 is first episode of
season 3. Go outside.
With Doug little gimmicks, Doug,I was going to call him and like
(36:13):
just have the like a recording in the background and say, Doug,
we need a new commercial for season 3.
Do you have anything to say? And he would have been like, you
know, not really aware that we were going to record it.
And I would have recorded him and he just said, I don't know,
something about stickers. I guess there's.
Nothing stopping you from still doing that.
I mean, I'm just saying. I'll probably still do that.
We do need a new little gimmickscommercial for season. 4 You
(36:35):
keep saying season 3. This is the end of Season 3.
Season. Four, we're going to Season 4.
We're all Season 4. We're.
We're vets, we're grizzled vets at this point season.
Vets. Darling by hound mouth it's.
(36:57):
Cold it's die. It's deep in his way if you
don't let someone in. Darla by who?
(37:19):
Darlin. Like Darlin?
Hey there, darlin by hound mouth.
Hound mouth. Hound mouth.
Yeah. Darlin, especially when you get
to around, I mean, it's the whole song, but you get to about
like 49 seconds in. Yeah, he goes in this like
gospel influence thing and that.Oh, it's nice.
And the chorus is great. Yeah, I don't have any
(37:40):
experience with Houndmouth. They're like, I didn't actually
know this about them. I'd listened to them for a
while. I didn't know this, but they're
actually from Indiana originally, but I think they
live in Nashville now. I think they're like transplants
and they, you know, to where this sound kind of lives And
they. Yeah, they Sedona was their kind
of big hit. They just put out a song like
(38:01):
the last couple weeks. Second biggest listening city in
the United States? Chicago.
Chicago. Yeah, they just put out a song
with Liam. What's his name?
Or Liam? Saint John.
I don't know if you know him. He's like a country artist
called Devil in Disguise. That's really good.
I almost picked that for this, but yeah.
Did you save it for featuring? No.
I didn't. I have a different one for
(38:22):
feature, but Darlin's very like early morning campfire cooking
breakfast on the fire, you know? That's the vibe of.
That one that's like you're doing some sausage links and
some paint griddle cakes on the on the campfire in the morning
pork. Chops and pancakes, so.
It's like it's sunny, so maybe you're underdressed because the
sun's out, but it's actually pretty cold because it's it's
(38:44):
camping. And then you got to go get
yourself a little little blanket.
You ever? Fuck with chicken and waffles.
Oh yeah. Big fan, love chicken.
Waffles. Let me tell you what makes as
good of sense but doesn't get any recognition is pork chops
and pancakes. We've talked.
About this before you've always been a pork chops and pancakes
advocate we've. Talked about it on the podcast.
(39:04):
I don't, not on the podcast Personal life's.
I'm pretty sure we've done pork chops and pancakes or talked
about. I don't.
Know I don't know how or why it happened, but I was on a camping
trip with a bunch of good buddies, yours and mine, and did
you know you can buy? You could buy, I don't know if
you still can. You can buy pork chops in a can.
I know not not pork chops in a can.
Pancakes in a can. I've heard of pancakes.
(39:26):
It was like a whipped cream. Can shake it up and then you
make pancakes. Yeah.
We it was exactly the moment you're describing.
You're underdressed. It's a little chilly, but the
sun's out. We made pork chops and pancakes
for breakfast and I don't know why we picked that as something
we were making, but it worked sofucking good, dude.
(39:46):
It was fantastic. That's.
Amazing. What do you do?
So like applesauce with pork chops is a thing, right?
People do that? What if you did apple butter
because it's pancakes. God damn we just did Maple syrup
which still worked. So which would?
Work great, which would work great and you could do both.
You could do apple butter and Maple syrup.
That would go well together. Now I want to try apple butter
(40:07):
and pancakes and pork chops. Damn.
What was your song? What was your Go Outside song?
Mine was the end of the party and the song is literally after
the party by The Menzingers. I went through our list to see
if I have ever had The Menzingers on a mixtape and I
haven't, but I've probably put The Menzingers on honorable
mentions 30 times. Still.
(40:29):
An honorable mention because they still are not on a mixtape,
we just. Both got a couple perpetual
honorable mentions. They were that band that I found
like when I, I was probably in abit of a musical and I found
them and like latched on to him pretty hard.
And I've probably seen them moretimes recently than anybody else
and just related with them more than anybody that I've been
listening to for a while. And they just hit everything
(40:51):
just right when I needed something new.
And so the men's singers kind ofare always like a go to, but
after the party it's just a fucking fantastic conclusion of
an outside bonfire song. Yeah.
So would you know what else would be a great one that I just
thought of? Like as you're packing up the
car and you're still, you're kind of trying to wake up.
(41:14):
What's the Against Me song that starts with the Party's Over?
Is it? I don't know.
Shit, did we talk about Florida?Sync No Did we?
Talk about sell out on a recent episode, The book We.
Did the book? Yeah, we did.
We did. OK, I finished it.
We're going to. Go see, you know, we're seeing
Laura Jane Grace when we go see Murder by Death.
She's she's opening, she's open.Yep.
So excited for that. Yeah, it'll.
(41:36):
Be great, all right? Next.
Here we go random number generator and go 2920. 9 is
karaoke. Yes, I wanted this one so bad.
All right, I did karaoke well too.
Bad because you just got the last one.
God damn it. Damn.
It. Son.
Of a bitch. I got all excited.
You're right. This is your turn, son of All
(41:56):
right. That's fine.
I get to mention it anyway. But.
Again, because I was a bit scrambly in the fourth quarter
and you had a serious influence on this.
I'm going to do the Killers, Mr.Brightside.
(42:36):
Oh, I had to influence. Why?
Because. You sent me a video, you singing
it. I sure did.
Singing your heart out. You and a bunch of our good
pals. Yep, it was a good one and.
Then I had this was one of the ones that I did have.
If you want to bring the house down in karaoke, you sing The
Killers Mr. Brightside. If you want to have the entire
audience sing at a sporting event, you play The Killers, Mr.
Brightside. The Killers Mr. Brightside is
(42:57):
our generations don't stop believing.
Yep. Did we talk about this on the
podcast on the I? Think it came up.
I think it came up. I don't remember.
We talked about don't stop believing as a no go for
karaoke. It's.
Not it is a no go. There's too much musical
interlude, 100%. Right, 100% and I do, I think
this did come up. I think you mentioned this is
(43:18):
the this is. Our generation, some kind of
our. Generation's, yeah, but it is a
better karaoke song because it doesn't stop.
It doesn't. And it's it's same way.
Mr. Jones by the county crows doesn't it's.
Singable, for Mr. Brightside, isalso one of those songs that,
like even the bat, even a reallybad karaoke year, can do pretty
well karaoke because the melody is so level on this song.
(43:42):
Sure, you know what I'm saying? And, but, and you're right, the
crowd's going to participate. You only need to memorize one
verse in chorus because it's just the same thing twice.
You don't. So you don't even have to look
at the screen with this song. You just, you just know it.
You've got it. Just.
Throw it out there. You didn't look it up, did you?
What? I didn't look anything up.
OK. How many plays do you think?
(44:02):
Gosh, I don't know, 3 billion? 2.5 billion you.
Want you want to be really depressed then?
Baby look. Up look up Imagine Dragons top
songs. I don't want that.
And I don't know why I somebody mentioned them the other day and
I don't. Want that?
Look this up and I was angry Tell the tell the audience what
(44:22):
what I. Imagine Dragons are to me what
Disturbed was to music. Yeah, Imagine Dragons was.
Single fucking person that listens to Imagine Dragons the
same way I didn't know a single person that listened to
Disturbed but they're both just massive bands and I don't
understand how. But ruin ruin all the listeners
days too by telling them how many plays their top five.
(44:43):
Songs Believer 3.3 billion. Demons 2.6 billion.
Thunder 2.6 billion, Bones 1.4 billion Enemy 1.7 billion Can
you? Believe that shit dude.
Who? Their top five all all have
basically a billion and 1/2 or more.
Their top song is 3. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold
on. I'm I have their top ten.
All of their top 10 songs have over a billion listens.
(45:06):
It's unreal dude, it's unreal. Who and their top song listening
to? Imagine Dragons 56 million
monthly listeners. Who is listening to this band?
But their top song having more plays than Mr. Brightside is
mind blowing because Mr. Brightside is like one of the,
in my mind, the most listened tosongs ever.
OK, here we go. OK, cool, this gives me some
(45:26):
transparency. South Paul.
Brazil #1 listen to #1 listen toarea.
Mexico City #2 City, Australia, Santiago, Columbia and London,
Great Britain are their top fivemost listened top five most
listened cities so I. Guess it's just not the US
Basically just. Not the US, because the US
(45:48):
realizes that they're a dogpile all.
Right, so I my I. Guess the five.
Listen to artist in the world inthe world.
Man. In the world.
My honorable mention for this came from that same night that I
sent you the videos. Mr. Brightside brought the house
down South. First off, the very first song,
karaoke. That wasn't by the guy hosting
(46:08):
karaoke, right? So the very first, like people
that went up, they did fucking don't stop believing.
And then they did a really horrible job of it.
So that did not start the night out well, but the night went
really well. There was one song that brought
the entire bar down harder than Mr. Brightside did.
Harder than Mr. Brightside and I'd I'd never thought of this
song for karaoke. Completely new idea to me and it
(46:31):
absolutely murdered. So props to the two women that
did the song. You've highly influenced my
karaoke from here on out. Cee Lo green fuck you.
Oh absolutely murdered at karaoke dude.
Everybody in the bar had their middle fingers in the air.
Wow. Everybody was screaming.
I was like, Oh my God, I'd neverthought about this song.
(46:54):
And it's such a good. He's a bit.
Problematic he is. Do we still he's?
Problematic, but as a karaoke song?
As a karaoke. This was another thing that I
wanted to talk to you about. You need to go and listen to the
episode on from Friday of the Daily about the Prince
documentary that's never going to be released.
It's only 30 minutes long. Just an incredible portrayal of
(47:18):
who Prince was as a person. It's a nine hour long
documentary. The director and Netflix
collaborated with the Prince estate to like create the
documentary. And then when he started to like
socialize what he had done, fucking Ezra.
I can't remember his last name. He did the OJ documentary.
I can't remember what his name is.
(47:39):
But when he put it out, the Netflix and the estate are like,
Nope, we're not doing it. But it's it sounds incredible.
OK #1 listen to artist in the world.
Who is it? Lady Gaga.
Bruno Mars. Taylor Swift.
Bruno Mars. I've looked this up before and I
should have known that, yeah, it's Bruno Mars, I think.
Taylor Swift is lower than I thought she is 1/2. 3 Is that
(48:04):
based on monthly listeners 8. 9 She's 9 right now.
She's very. American, I think.
She's like the. She's like the reverse Imagine
Dragons. I feel like she's such an
American. Like listen to two artists.
Yeah, you know, probably. Yeah, that's true.
Anyway. Dude consider consider Cee Lo
fuck you for karaoke sometime even if he is problematic.
(48:25):
You're you're the one singing ata karaoke, not him.
That's true. I also threw Garth Brooks
friends in low places as an honorable mention.
It's. Classic.
It's it's a classic, but I'm excited.
To hear that Cee Lo brought downstuff.
There's a dude I never mind. There's a dude that did a Johnny
Cash song, and I forget what song it was, but that's what, I
can't remember which one, but hehad that.
He had a bass. He had like a Johnny Cash style
(48:47):
voice, so he crushed it too. Hearing somebody who can
actually sing Johnny Cash right sing Johnny Cash is pretty
awesome. All right, you want to do the
next one? Yeah, the rated number
generator, which I think. Is me this time OK?
Yeah. Go 30. 4. 34 is there's no X in
mixtape, so spoon, you've got your cherry bomb.
(49:11):
Get yourself to bed, blow out that cherry bowl or light.
Could be so fair. Let it go alone.
(49:37):
It's not fair that I got this one because I didn't really have
any backups to what I picked on.I mean, that's one kind of is.
I mean, it is this one does makeme think of the next so, and I
don't really listen to Spoon anymore, but I don't like you
and Leonor had more. Huh.
There's. Still 1.3 million people that
are listening to Spoon I mean. They they had that huge moment
(49:58):
when this album came out that this song is on, which is Gaga
Gaga, Gaga. I always want to do 1 less Gaga.
Yeah, it seems like there's too many guys, like 20. 17, like
between probably 2007 and like 2017, that like decade.
Their spoon was actually pretty big.
Like they were like one of thoseOC bands, you know?
(50:19):
Yeah. Were they?
Yeah, I don't think they ever performed on the OC, but they
their music was definitely on there.
They were right up that alley oflike that indie rock revolution
thing. Why?
Did I think Spoon was like a 90salt rock band?
No. Dude, they're like they're,
they're they're 2000s, 2002 thousand 10s, yeah.
(50:39):
Indie rock stuff, yeah. Crazy, I had two for this one.
OK, there's an artist, his name is Hayden.
OK, the album that I picked the song off of came out forever ago
and then he just did a 20 year anniversary of it.
So that would have meant he did a 20 year anniversary because of
(51:01):
the original is gone. So 20 year anniversary in 2016.
So that means it came out in 1996 and the song as bad as they
seem, but that's the song I'm picking for.
There's no X in mixtape, but there is a song on this album.
I fucking dude. Every single time we talk about
something on the mixtape podcast, I feel like I've
already talked about it. We're at a point now where I
(51:23):
feel like I have no original content anymore.
Do I have any original content? Have we talked about the song?
Have we talked about the song Skates?
Not to my memory, okay. Following the mix tape, I want
you to go listen to the song Skates by Hayden.
I'm just going to leave it at that, that's all.
I don't think. You've ever talked about Hayden
on the podcast, so okay. All right, good.
That feels good then. Yeah, my.
Second one for this would be theDetroit Cobras.
(51:45):
He did it dude. I.
Haven't thought about the Detroit Cobras in a long time.
They're. So, well, that woman passed
away, which is so sad. But, and I guess they're still
doing stuff, but they have a male vocalist now, which doesn't
feel the same. And if you're going to change an
entire everything about your band, like I guess you're not
changing everything, you're justchanging your vocalist.
(52:06):
But you can't be the Detroit Cobras anymore, is that?
Can I say that? Yeah, I, I, I try not to judge
bands to do that because I don'tknow what their history was or
what like, you know, but but I mean, I totally get what you
mean. Like if the if it sounds that
different too, how can you keep the same name?
They put on Detroit Cobras, put on a new song in 2024, and it
(52:27):
looks like it's like maybe a collaborative song with a band
called the Pee Wee's, which I have no relationship with the
Pee Wee's, but it's the Pee Wee's and the Detroit Cobras.
Maybe they're evolving, I don't know.
The Peewees have a ton of shit out though.
Looks like I've got some exploring to do.
No, the Peewees don't have that much going on.
(52:47):
Maybe the Peewees is who the Detroit Cobras is evolving into.
I don't know, but it's worth a listen.
Yeah, but those are my 2 songs. Hayden bad as it seems, but
you're going to go listen to Skates after the podcast and
then Cobras. He did it.
Ready. Yep.
Random number generator go 353435. 35 samples, start
(53:08):
chopping. This is you samples.
No, this is you. I just picked a spoon.
Oh shit, the source material is Anytime, Anyplace with Janet
Jackson. OK, And then the song Do you
know it? No poetic justice, Kendrick.
Anytime. You can get it you can get it
(53:29):
you can get it you. Can get it.
And then no, just no, just no, no.
Just what's wrong? Oh shit, yeah.
(53:57):
Does this count on the? Nose can.
I this is the first time it's come up.
I technically you're putting this on a new mix tape, so I
guess it does count, but I picked a Kendrick song on that
episode. I'm going.
To say it counts because this isa new mix tape fair.
Enough. Oh, but.
I you're saying I didn't well itremind I just want to remind you
that I have added this song to my list right now, 5 minutes
(54:18):
into this episode. I.
Know you did, that's how prepared for.
What we're going into, yeah. But in theory this is like songs
that maybe could have made that mixtape, but this one couldn't
even have because it. Couldn't have even made that
mixtape but that's. OK, because you're technically
this is a new mixtape and you could argue that you wanted to
use this one. It couldn't because Kendrick was
already picked. Oh.
(54:39):
Fuck it, I'm just gonna end up pulling something out that's not
even really good then if that's the case.
But we're gonna let it. We're gonna let it.
No, we're. Gonna let it slide.
It's a great song too. So that helps me let it slide
because I love this song. OK, good.
I didn't. Know.
That sample, Janet Jackson, I had no idea.
So. Are you serious?
I'm going to know now and now I'm going to listen to it.
I'm going to be like, obviously this does.
(54:59):
The sexiest Janet song of all time.
Oh, you don't remember this video?
I'm not saying I don't, I'm saying I just probably never
realized it. Yeah.
Look up Janet Jackson anytime, anyplace.
Of course, see, this is what's so cool about this.
This and this kept up. Dude, Clinton, the amount of
times, OK, I've got to say this because I get to watch the video
(55:20):
while I'm editing and we don't put the video versions out for
every episode. No, I don't put the video
versions out for anything exceptthe like the special episodes
because I don't want to make ourguests feel like we've had
multiple guests that didn't really want to be on video First
off. And like, I don't want to create
inconsistencies and stuff, but what people couldn't see is that
Clinton would have the reaction.Whenever Clinton was mind blown,
(55:43):
his reaction was to take his headphones off and like,
physically react, but he wasn't making a sound so the audience
couldn't see it. So there's moments of almost
silence where it's because Clinton is reacting hard to
something. And it was so awesome and so
funny. Cut all of Clinton's reactions.
I should. Cut him.
I should do a cut. That'd be fun.
He but he he kept being mind blown at what at the samples,
(56:06):
which I'm experiencing right nowbecause I don't know how I never
noticed that sample in Poetic Justice.
I've heard this. I love this album.
I've heard this song so many times and now that you say it's
a Janet Jackson song, I hear it.That's that's what I hear now.
I just hear Janet Jackson. If you want to take it a step
further, go watch this video. The Poetic Justice video.
No, the Janet video anytime, anyplace.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is 1993 Janet.
(56:30):
That's I want to. I want to watch a clip of it
right now. Oh, I remember this video.
Just the screenshot. I remember this video.
I remember watching this on VH1.Dude, yeah.
You probably shouldn't have like.
Probably shouldn't have been. Nope.
Yeah, I remember that. I remember this video very much.
In. Fact.
I remember, I, I vaguely remember, like you.
(56:52):
Remember what? I never mind.
I remember this. I remember this video.
No, it wasn't going to be dirty. It wasn't going to be dirty.
No, it wasn't. I just it was going to be corny.
Like I just remember rooting forthem as a couple in this video
being like, yeah, I like really cute.
But now I'm watching the video again.
I'm like, is it all just in themhaving sex?
This is all the different placesthey had sex you.
(57:13):
Just wanted them to be friends. They're a.
Good looking couple. Little Roderick says I want
these guys to be best buds. I'm.
Rooting for these two. I'm really.
I'm really pulling for these kids.
That's funny. All right, I had I had wax
Taylor Quesa raw for this. What was that?
You know that song quesa raw? I don't know if you listen to
(57:36):
it, you'll know it. It's just it was your pick.
So it doesn't. I don't get it.
So doesn't doesn't really matter.
Doesn't really matter, only. Four left here.
Shit, really. Yeah.
All right. Yep, I already crossed that off.
(57:57):
I absolutely recognize this Wax Taylor sample.
Yeah, the sample. 'S from a song called Case or A2
by some like old Jazz Singer. I forget who it is, but.
Have you heard, Oh shit, they talked about him last week
Tonight, the guy that sings the song, I wish I could remember,
he made-up a song about the like.
(58:17):
It's a very quick sample of likewhat to do about how fucked up
the US is right now. And like everybody is cutting
their own samples of his song and it's just him singing.
If I can find the clip, I'll send it to you because it's
fucking fantastic. It's super funny.
And like everybody is like now building it into like big song
samples. I like little viral moments like
(58:37):
that, like the Bad Intruder song.
Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I love that. I just watched it this morning.
This is a little different because it's not samples, but
this morning I watched I've, I've, I've everybody's seen this
a million times at this point, but the, the video where the
woman is setting up her camera and she actually backs into the
corner of her bed and screams. But.
It's it's a perfect pitch note and people cut in, Yeah.
(59:00):
Like that Note for the. Song.
Yeah, this is like to stay in the live one.
Yeah, yeah, totally. So it's really good, so.
Funny. There's 4 left.
Let me make sure I know what Ford is.
We've got the other Christmas song.
Yeah. So it's it's.
I can give you the numbers. It's other Christmas, it's dance
car, it's songs you throw in love and it's featuring artist.
Yep, Yep, correct. OK, here we go random number
(59:21):
generator go 36. We went 343536.
Another love song. OK, I have you know what?
I'm going to audible here what Iwas going to do love as a
battlefield, but I'm going to docome and get your love by
Redbone and get this bitch on a mixtape.
I'm going to I'm going to get this thing on a mixtape or go in
(59:42):
Redbone. Always the bridesmaids with this
(01:00:20):
song, but now, now they get to be the bride and I.
Still had Don't have a Menzingersong on a mixtape?
You're gonna. Have to make that happen.
I'm gonna. Have to make that happen.
Well, good for you getting Redbone out there.
Yeah, you know, it's, it's, it'sa band that if people don't
know, I think they they should because it was that's an all,
all Native American band. 60s. All Indigenous, Yeah. 60s and
(01:00:44):
70s, and they were pretty big. I mean, I don't know if they had
any other really big hits. Like Come and Get Your Love is
their massive hit, but everybodyknows this song.
If you think you don't, just listen.
You know the song, I guess you would have heard a clip of it by
now, but it's got that kind of earth, wind and fire vibe to it,
even though I don't think they were really necessarily like
that. Kind of what?
They weren't really a funk band necessarily.
Sure. Their first four most listened
(01:01:06):
to songs on Spotify are different versions of Come and
Get Your Love. Yeah, if.
You've seen Guardians of the Galaxy, You know the song.
You know the song he's dancing during this one and, like.
Yeah, yes, I forgot. Yeah, this is on Guardians of
the Galaxy. Good call.
Prominently featured, like you said.
Yeah. For.
Sure, absolutely great. It's a great fucking song.
(01:01:27):
Yeah, great bass line, even though it's not on the bass
episode, but yeah. I think this is another artist
that's been an honorable mentionof mine 'cause I searched the
dock and it doesn't show that we've had an Avet Brothers song,
but I did The Ballad of Love andHate as mine.
Oh. OK, cool.
Yeah, yeah, you you had the AvetBrothers as a honorable mention
for the Go Outside episode for sure.
(01:01:48):
I remember that. So they have been honorable
mention, Yeah, before this. Is my honorable mention this
time for Songs with Love in the title.
You should go listen to the songas well.
First is Hayden Skates, second is Do you know the Battle of 11
Hate? I do.
I, I do. Have you, have you ever seen?
I I saw them live last year, actually.
I totally forgot about that. It was really good.
(01:02:09):
It was just that, like, I think sometimes they tour with a
bigger band maybe, and sometimesthey just the brothers.
Just the brothers, yeah. That's.
Cool. It was really good.
It's not my it's not like one ofmy main genres.
Like I will definitely dip my dabble in this.
Yeah, seeing a whole set of theirs was maybe a little much
for me personally, but they werereally good, you know?
(01:02:30):
They're really good, so OK. Cool red rubber generator.
Here we go. Do we do 30 already?
Yes, we did. Do we already do 37?
We just did 37. No, we didn't do 37.
No. 37's cuz that's for your dad's car.
That's all you all. Right, cuz that's in Dad's car.
Dad, it's. Funny I.
(01:02:51):
Think my dad was, I guess he's alittle more versatile than I
thought he was because when The Gambler came on by Kenny Rogers.
Said If you're going to play theGame Boy, you got to learn to
play it right. You got to know when to hold,
know when to fold up, know when to walk away and know when to
(01:03:14):
run. You never count your money when
you're sitting at the table. There will be.
Also a great karaoke song. Dad was did we talk about how my
dad was big greatest hits guy? Yes, we did.
Yeah. We talked about how my dad was
(01:03:36):
the big greatest hits album. So it would have been Kenny
Rogers greatest hits. It wouldn't have been a Kenny
Rogers album. Which I think the album this was
on is called The Gambler, but I could be wrong.
Yeah. I think you're right, but dad
was the big greatest hits guy. So Kenny Rogers greatest hits,
this would have been that's where he would have had it on
Chicago's greatest hits, which we talked about the album cover
(01:03:56):
with them painting that. That would have been one of
another one that was in dad's dad's car.
That's. What tears greatest hits?
We talked about that one too on the episode.
So it would have been a lot of the greatest hits.
So Kenny Rogers, the greatest hits, the gambler would have
been that's a really. That's a that's that's such a
dad's car cassette song it. Really.
Is it just? Really is a.
(01:04:18):
Lot of steering wheels happen. A lot of heavy steering wheels
happen. From dad on that cracked.
Like, like the like, you know, like whether your dad had this
or not. I'm still picturing like a like
an old Oldsmobile or something with cracked leather.
Oh yeah, he's been sitting. In the sun for too long, sure.
Over too many years, you know you got.
To condition that stuff you have.
To condition that leather that'll.
Keep your leather conditioned. Yeah, that's a really good one.
(01:04:41):
I did the most work for this episode on this song
specifically, which wasn't a lotof work, but I, I think I
mentioned it on the episode. But I inherited my daddy's
record collection, so I went through all my records to see if
something sparked a memory rightof like my dad's taste.
And it didn't take me long because I got to the bees and it
(01:05:02):
was Boston More Than a Feeling. And then it took me right
through the car and my dad singing More Than a feeling.
And like I said on the episode, my dad was a good singer.
God damn great, great job so. He could hit that, He could hit
that note, you know, but. Also, I wonder if that one would
have brought the house down karaoke style.
I. Couldn't sing it though, so I I
didn't. I don't even know that I could
(01:05:23):
sing some of the songs that I have on my karaoke list anyway.
But more than a feeling is not an easy song to sing man, he hit
that high note like I I don't have that.
I don't have that, the quality, the vocal quality to sing that
song. We.
Haven't talked about Boston at all really on this pod.
They've been an honorable mention for me before.
Not this song. A different song, but they've
(01:05:44):
never been on a what song? Was it Amanda for girls names
it. Wasn't actually Amanda, it was
foreplay a long time and I don'tremember the episode though I I
just know I had that as an honorable mention for something.
Yeah, and Boston is fucking cool.
They're great, man. I mean, was there something
specifically you wanted to bringup about that just?
How fucking cool they are did. You know, I'll bring up one
thing. Did you know that he basically
(01:06:05):
this is going to be one of those10 percent, 10% of the 100%
facts that I know that's. Exactly what I want he.
Either pioneered the use of thisor invented direct input
recording like DI recording. So like that first Boston record
that had like the five fucking massive hits on it.
He recorded. Like all the guitars and all the
bass and all that stuff hit himself.
(01:06:27):
He recorded everything except the drums, to my knowledge, on
the entire record. So there wasn't even a band yet.
It was just that, just the guitar player.
It was not even a singer of Boston.
It's like the guitar player thatwrote those songs and recorded
that stuff and he did it withoutlike amps or anything.
He just ran his guitar straight into the recording equipment and
then put like effects on him later.
And that's why that that album sounds so clean and clear and
(01:06:49):
crisp, even though it was mid 70s is because he like invented
this whole recording process. If you're, if you're a producer
or if you're Tim listening or ifyou're Jason.
And what I'm saying is 100% right.
You know what? Who the fuck cares?
It's, there's some nugget of truth in what I'm saying, Tim.
Text me and let me know if this is true.
That's what it was. That was it was the production
(01:07:10):
episode that this was honorable mention for me because I wanted
to talk about what I'm talking about right now.
But then I wanted to talk about Boston and then I didn't pick
it. I picked other stuff.
But yeah, got it. OK, God damn, this is good.
I'm fucking. I'm going to still clean the
house and listen to Boston when we're done.
Hell yeah. Shit, this is great.
Next song all. Right, random number generator
down to two down to two what's Iknow the two featuring and the
(01:07:34):
other Christmas that are all that are last party.
What number are they? It's. 38 and 30.
No 38 and 32. OK, hold on. 32 popped up first.
OK, so that's me. Yeah.
All right. I'm going with the waitresses
Christmas wrapping. Now the calendar's just one
page. Of course I am excited.
(01:07:56):
Tonight's the night I've set my mind up to give you much of
love. Is it the Merry Christmas song?
(01:08:24):
Yep, because it is my favorite holiday.
Great song. Yeah, this.
Is the Christmas party song so that's perfect for the Christmas
party? Absolutely.
I did Wham last Christmas for this one.
Oh, that's, that's good too. Did we talk about that?
That didn't even. I don't know.
Why did that even came up? But like when I was like, I got
to pick another Christmas song in the middle of March, I was
(01:08:44):
like, how do we not pick Wham last Christmas?
Yeah, that's surprising. That's about the.
Waitresses. You actually know about the
waitresses? Do you know about the
waitresses? There's a story there, too.
OK, so the waitresses was this guy.
So it's like it says they're from Ohio, but it really was
just this guy. Chris Butler, who was in had a
(01:09:05):
bunch of other bands and stuff in his that he like, he had been
signed multiple times. He was like a producer for a
while, and he kept trying to getprojects off the ground.
He had all these relationships with with record labels and
nothing ever worked out. Everything kept going sour,
going South, and there was a label.
(01:09:25):
It must be this Clone Records ormaybe it's the Sea, I don't
know. Some label.
Label was like, we want to put out a Christmas compilation
album like Money Maker. Christmas time was put out and
we want some originals on here. And so they went to this guy
because they had a relationship with him and they're like, look,
dude, can you write a Christmas song?
(01:09:46):
And so he wrote Christmas wrapping.
He hired some just of his friends or people he knew to, to
sing on it. Like the woman who sings on this
wasn't a professional singer. And actually, if you listen to
it, she's not even that great ofa singer.
She was like some woman he knew. And he According to him, he like
half assed this song and he was it's called Christmas wrapping
'cause he was trying to do like a quote UN quote like rap thing
(01:10:10):
right at the time. Like this is like late 70s.
So like it was that like hippityhoppity era of rap.
And he was like, I'm going to dosomething like this.
And then the song was massive massive 0 and he released it
under a fake band name. So the Waitresses was just a
made-up band name that he did. The waitresses does have another
big track They. Do Well, what happened was at
(01:10:30):
first, from my understanding, atfirst he was actually really
annoyed that this was the set because he had been in all these
other bands and written all these other songs and never had
success. But then he just fucking
embraced it and he was like, allright.
And he put together an actual band called the Waitresses and
they recorded like 2 albums. They're kind of like ska
adjacent, dude. If you actually go listen to it,
it's like New Wave with horns and some of their stuff and kind
(01:10:54):
of ska. And they yeah, they did like
this is their biggest song is Christmas wrapping.
But it's not their only song. Like they've got other hits.
Like, I know what boys like is them, you know that song that's.
What I was going to say like they have that other big hit of
that. Yeah, so like it's but that
that's the story. So like, it's, it's basically
like a, a band that was put together after the song was
(01:11:16):
already a hit because this dude wrote it and recorded it and
then he just had to put togethera band and they, they would tour
and stuff and they, I, I think they didn't like each other and
they weren't even a real band. They only lasted like 5 or 6
years as a band. So that's the story as I know
it. I, I'm, I'm not like 45% on that
one, yeah. That's pretty good.
(01:11:37):
I mean, you had me sold all right?
Yeah, but last Christmas is a good one too.
Yeah, I felt good about it. Last one, Don, And you know what
it is? It is features and my feature
was Usher featuring Alicia Keys,my Boo.
(01:12:32):
Nice. Yeah, that's another artist that
we have not talked about much was Usher I.
Know I there's a playlist or there's a mix tape that I think
we'll probably do someday that Ihave an Usher song bucketed for
and so I try to not bring him upbecause I'm so confident and on
this other one but I don't know if we'll ever do it but I've got
but you're. Saving Usher.
(01:12:52):
I've got to. Do my phone specifically, Yeah,
yeah, maybe I shouldn't, Maybe Ishould just let them
out-of-the-box, but. I can't wait to hear what you're
saving Usher for. I'm not telling.
Yeah, I know that, but I can't wait to get there so that we can
find out what you're saving Usher for.
Great song. Oh, yeah, And like, do you
remember when this, like, first came out and there was all of
(01:13:16):
the shit surrounding? They performed it at an award
ceremony and Alicia Keys was dating.
Swizz beats. Swizz Beats was like in the
audience as they were performingthe song and it was a very
romantic performance and it caused a lot of controversy
(01:13:39):
around like is Usher, Alicia Keys got a little side business
going on and so but. That's that's Usher, though.
Usher can't not be that way. That's just his state of being
is sexual. Yeah, I know, but it's a bit
problematic now because he was really good friends with Diddy
and like, you know, is that partof it all?
(01:14:00):
You know, Like is this. Yeah, So there's that.
But he's averted controversy thus far, so let's give him the
benefit of the doubt and say Usher's just a charismatic
persona. Yep.
Hell of a dancer, that guy. Hell.
Of a dancer just. Absolutely, and a hell.
Of a singer. Oh, absolutely.
(01:14:21):
Absolutely. Storytelling artist I.
I've said this on the pod before, but I can't every time I
think of Usher like that. Those first Usher records came
out when I was in middle school and it was just, it was one of
those things where as a middle school boy, I was UN
irrationally jealous of him. Well, it was.
Well, yeah, who wouldn't? But it wasn't even that.
(01:14:42):
It was just every girl, every girl in the entire school was
obsessed with Usher. Every girl in the entire school
is obsessed with Usher. And you know, you look at
yourself in the mirror and you're not.
You're like, I don't think I could literally be any further
from who this human being is. I don't think it's possibly to
be more opposite. Pimple faced 107 LB middle
school Rod is not exactly rippedR&B singer, an incredible
(01:15:06):
dancer. Usher I.
Disagree. I think that you were probably
an incredible dancer. I.
Was not I was not an incredible dancer, but thank you for your
faith, your, you know, appreciate, appreciate you
trying to to pump me up there, but Nope.
But he's fantastic. I mean, he's incredible.
So and Alicia Keys is just like a pretty singular talent.
She, yeah, she's pretty damn incredible.
(01:15:28):
She's a hell of a songwriter as well.
Oh. Yeah, she is.
Yeah, she is what? Did you have for this?
What did I? Have for this Oh, I had how do
you want it? Tupac featuring Casey and JoJo.
Casey and JoJo. Yep, how do you want it?
Yeah. Great song.
Yeah, great song. Yeah.
Jess inspired me on that one with the, with the, like the 90s
(01:15:49):
R&B hip hop collabs. I, I I was, I missed that thing
happening. But for some reason they weren't
on my radar for the features episode, which makes no sense
because I love that era where. Yeah.
Like hip hop, like a every. Rapper.
Every rapper had to have yeah had to have like 3 songs in
their album that were featuring an R&B artist or group.
Bring that back. Bring it back, bring it back.
(01:16:11):
We need the world needs that to help it heal. 2 Right now I
don't really not. Okay, all right, I agree.
I. Don't know who that would be.
There's so many good R&B singersnow, they're just not big pop
stars. Well, I.
Mean, like, fucking. There's a lot of that shit
happening, Post Malone and Shabuzzi, and I mean, that shit
happens still. Sure, you know, just not, not
(01:16:32):
like it did then. Sure.
I think it actually happens morethan you think it does.
Maybe it does. Maybe it does.
Maybe I'm just not paying attention, or they're probably
just not like, I don't know, maybe it's generational or
there's no radio anymore. You know, that would have been
radio for me. That would just been pop radio
back then, yeah. Totally.
I just realized that in the background, I had the video for
Any Time Any Place by Janet Jackson playing on repeat on one
(01:16:54):
of my tabs the whole time. This whole time since we talked
about it. It's good.
Stuff, Yeah, good stuff. So.
Your homework after this? Is to listen to Hayden Skates
skates. And then The Ballad of Love and
Hate. But you've already heard that
one. I think I was.
Listening to it. That's a great story song, very
pretty story song and. To watch that, watch the the day
(01:17:16):
or listen to the daily from Friday.
Oh God, you're such a fucking cool story about Prince.
And then my homework is that I have to find the the funny clip.
Yeah, from the guy that was on Last Week Tonight.
And send that to me. We've got some.
Fun homework, yes. Sir, I.
Don't. I don't dislike it when it's
just you and I I don't. Either I think the guests bring
(01:17:37):
a nice dynamic. Dude, Can you imagine how
repetitive it would get if it was just me and you every
episode though? We would, we would our our, our
artist choice pool. It's just too, yeah, too shallow
too. Shallow.
It's too shallow of a pool. You want to read the read the
list out. Nope, because I didn't write it
down OK. I'll read the list out.
(01:17:57):
This is the first time for everything first.
Time I was so focused on crossing my own shit off.
Look at this chaos dude. Look at this pandemonium and
it's off of a tiny post it because there was too many
words. Well, I'm going to do my best
here. I guess it's only fair because I
didn't read the rules on this episode.
Because we don't need to. Oh.
Shit. It's just us.
We're all over the. Place.
We don't need to. That's fine.
(01:18:18):
OK, All right. Time of the season.
The Zombies. Donde S Santa Claus, Augie Rios.
Mine's A Lie by Hi Viz. Smooth Criminal by Michael
Jackson. Darlin from Houndmouth.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers. You've Got Your Cherry Bomb by
Spoon. Poetic Justice by Kendrick
Lamar. Come and Get Your Love by
(01:18:39):
Redbone The Gambler from Kenny Rogers, Christmas wrapping from
The Waitresses and My Boo Usher featuring Alicia Keys.
Yeah. What a weird mix tape with a
couple of random Christmas songsin there.
Can't wait. For you to sequence Christmas
songs. Into there, Yeah, well, we'll
see how that goes. We'll see how that goes.
(01:19:05):
How to make a mix tape? Did we record?
We already recorded episode 1 ofSeason 4.
No, No. Yes, we did.
No, the last episode of season 3just hasn't come out yet as
we're recording this. We've recorded it though, do.
We know who our guest is for thefirst episode of Season 4.
We. Do.
Hell yeah. There you go, I'm.
(01:19:26):
Ready to go? Got it.
We're kicking off Season 4 with the with the credentials.
Yeah, credentials. I'm excited.
You know, I'm excited for it. So I'm.
Excited for it. It's gonna be good.
It's gonna be a good 10. Yeah, buddy.
Yeah, I know. It's weird getting it.
We're actually like, been responsible and recording like,
like. You're.
Recording at a decent clip. So we have like we're like
(01:19:48):
multiple recordings in before. I get out there, so it's
probably consumed my confusion. Yeah, for sure.
Well, that and I do a bad job ofpaying attention to stuff.
That might be it too. Well hey man, season 3 in the
books now. What is the song that fades us
out of season 3? Oh.
Shit, I don't know. That's a great question.
(01:20:13):
I mean, we did End of the road by Boyz to men, right?
We've already done into the Road, yeah.
OK, hold on, don't go anywhere. Good luck babe.
By Chaperone. Should we?
That was on, that was on a mixtape, so that I know, that's
why I thought. Maybe that would be a good one.
What if I do? There's this really sweet like
folk cover of that song. Can I do that?
Sure. Or.
All right, I'm going to. I'm going to throw some out and
(01:20:36):
you tell me what you want to do.OK.
OK. A moment like this.
Kelly Clarkson. Oh.
That might be top of the list. So far OK, I've had.
The Time of My Life, Bill Medleyand Jennifer Warren's Dirty
Dancing. Yeah, OK.
Graduation for I don't see. Nope.
Congratulations, Post Malone. Nope.
(01:20:58):
Unwritten Natasha Bedingfield. Nope time.
It's I've had the time of my life.
Hey, look, Ma, I made it by panic at the disco.
Nope. OK, all right then.
We got it. All right then.
I've had the time of my life is the conclusion of Season 3.
(01:21:32):
All right, I will see you soon for Season 4, man, you've.
Got appointments to get to, that's why we've got a.
I've got an appointment to get to crack.
The dawn on Saturday morning. I have an appointment to get to.
Also. I have two stickers to design.
Because you weren't. You were right.
I never did a season 3 sticker, no so and now I'm going to have
to do a Season 4 one too. So I'm going to retroactively do
(01:21:53):
a Season 3 sticker, and now I have to do a Season 4 sticker
too. So we're going to have to have
two new stickers coming up. That's exciting.
It is exciting, so I. Think that the I think that
somehow we should make the QR code a part of every sticker.
I, I, yeah, it's good for advertising for sure.
I just as the, from a design standpoint, it's really annoying
to have to stick a QR code on there.
But you know what? If I'm being practical, which I
(01:22:14):
should be, and trying to grow the podcast, then yes, it needs
it needs a QR code. So I agree.
All right. Thanks dude.
Thanks dude have. A good weekend.
See you too, buddy.
