(00:06):
How? Many licks.
Now the making of a good compilation tape is a very.
Subtle. Art.
Many do's and don'ts. First of all, you're using
someone else's poetry to expresshow you feel.
This is a delicate thing. You got to kick it off with a
killer grab attention. Then you got to take it up

(00:27):
enough you don't know your Then you got to cool it off a notch.
There are a lot of rules home. I'm not at home, so I don't have
all my shit. So I'm I'm clicking between
windows. I don't have two monitors.
It's been ages. I'm just, but not as

(00:49):
discombobulated as you are. I feel relatively cumbobulated
but. Is that the word opposite of
discombobulating? I don't think so.
I don't think that's the word. Like there was been a there's
been a hot debate of what is theopposite of being nonchalant.
According to Google, no, you cannot be combobulated.

(01:10):
Can you be Chalant? Can you be Chalant?
No, you cannot be chalant either.
It's not an English word. However non chalant is comes
from old French. Just riveting stuff to start out
season 5 here. Yeah, let's, you know, let's
bring everybody up to speed because we were talking prior to

(01:32):
clicking record about what's going on in in your chomps
there. About my face.
When I you know what, I caught alot of Flack for posting that
picture. Well you know it, it was a
little pre emptive. It would.
I know you posted it out of love.
It was. It was too early.
Yeah, it's too early. You posted it out of love, but

(01:53):
it was. I had let you know you were one
of the first people I told you know, and very few people got a
photo, but you got a photo because I thought you'd
appreciate it. It's the background of our chat
exchange. Thank you iOS.
Yeah, so I guess we should. Well, let's, let's do this.
I'm going to talk about what thehell we're talking about here in
a second. But first, we have a big
announcement to make, and that'sabout to be relevant to what I'm

(02:13):
about to say. So I don't even know what it is.
Well, yeah, you do we we launched a Patreon.
Oh fuck yeah. OK, Yeah, I.
Do we launched A Patreon, so we should talk about that and I
just we have two members they. 2patrons subscribe.
Two, we have two patrons, so thank you to our pre emptive
patrons who somehow found our Patreon from I guess the TI

(02:35):
guess we did tease it. We we we put up an announcement
post that we're going to be doing a Patreon, so they must
have found that on their own accord.
Thank you both to former guests, but also big listeners.
So I'll take Brian from the horns episode and Carlina are
both patrons. So thank you guys.
So here's here's the deal with the Patreon is we said it in the

(02:56):
announcement video, but we'll we'll kind of say it again.
The goal isn't for us to like make money.
Really the goal is for we can make a little bit of cash that
we can put into advertising the pod to grow the pod is really
the goal. And so we only set 1 tier.
We don't have a bunch of tiers. It's just one tier.
It's 5 bucks a month. Oh, good call.
And you get the same thing as everybody, which is you get a

(03:18):
bunch of stickers. Once you're a member for a few
months, we'll send you a T-shirt.
More importantly, you get the episodes early.
So I'm going to post the unedited video episodes on
Patreon, like as soon as the recording is done.
So you're going to get all the UMS and Oz and and whatnot that
I edit out and you're going to get the pauses and fuck I'll.
Leave you edit. Sometimes if there's too many.

(03:39):
Yeah, sometimes. And you'll even get the bathroom
breaks where it's just staring at our blank walls.
I'll leave that in too. Fuck it.
So and then there's also bonus content.
So like right now there's some content up there where Don and I
talk about what the the residents of Candyland listen to
musically in their free time. Outstanding secret episode.

(04:03):
For example, so you'll get little things like that.
We'll post extras on there and so you'll get, you'll get the
episodes early and they'll be video and they'll be unedited.
That's what you'll get for beinga patron.
And you get direct access to talk to us via chat.
Although I have a feeling a lot of people who are patrons
probably have our phone number already.
So, but anyway, I bring that up.So please, if you're, if you

(04:24):
feel so inclined and you can spare a coffee's worth of money
per month to help the pod out, we'd really appreciate it.
It's I should probably give the address.
It'll be posted in the description of all the episodes.
From now on, make an Instagram. I'll make an Instagram post with
your photo. I would appreciate that it's
just patreon.com/mixtape pod. I try to make it as short as

(04:47):
possible. Mixtape.
Patreon.com/mixtape pod so go check it out.
Speaking of Mixtape Pod, I had aconversation with past guest
Bree today 'cause she posted a. Big fan favorite by the way.
She she's so good, so I want to bring Bree back with her Co host
Megan and I want to do the four of us.

(05:09):
They've they've asked if they could do spooky season music.
Also, of course, Palmer for saying spooky season, but makes
total sense. I don't know that I have a lot
of spooky season music. But either way, because Bree
posted like something and instead of the word lose, she
spelled it loose. Common misspelling and also no
business me correcting spelling. And it was funny because I we

(05:32):
were talking about, I was talking about how even still the
acronym for the podcast is wrong.
Yeah, for sure it is. There's there's no right way.
Well, there is a right way, I guess, but I don't like it.
I don't. Like it?
I'm just not gonna. I'm not gonna fix it.
It's it's, it is what it is we've decided we're gonna keep.
HTMMT. Our original version which is

(05:53):
which is HTM. M.
TI already forgot it yeah, but Idon't care It's just it's
mixtape. How to make a mixtape just
Google that or whatever. But if you want to join the
Patreon join. And the reason I brought that up
early one, because this is firstepisode of Season 5, first
episode with the Patreon. But also let's do a little game

(06:13):
here. So we're going to we're going to
already start to, I'm going to incentivize Patreon here.
So here's what we're going to do.
For those of you who don't know me personally, what Donnie is
referencing is my lip is swollenright now and I'm missing a
couple teeth. And that's new.
That's new. That's not how I always look.
All right, I hope there's not a lisp that comes out during this

(06:38):
episode. We'll see.
Or. A little whistle.
Here and there say it's not lispy.
Yeah, also, Don made his his name Donnie DDS for this
episode, which I, I very much appreciate.
So here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna give very TLDR
versions of how this happened. What's TLDR?
But I'm going to give too long. Didn't read shortened.
I'm going to give shortened. What very shortened version?

(07:01):
You don't know what TLDR is. It's when you don't want to
explain something in full, so you give a shortened version.
That's every e-mail. So I'm going to give three ways
this could have happened. If you're a normal listener,
I'll put a poll up. You can vote on which one you
think is right. If you're a Patreon member, I'm
going to I will reveal the actual way and tell the full
story on the spot, and I'll leave it in the unedited Patreon
version, but I'm going to cut itout of the regular version.

(07:24):
All right. So I'll give you the three
versions for everybody, three options T.
LDRS. They all start at the Deftones
Idol show in Baltimore. That's the common thread because
that happened 2 Thursdays ago. I went up to Baltimore with some
friends. Deftones absolutely crushed, by
the way. One of the best shows I've ever
seen. And I know you're not a

(07:45):
Deftones. Deftones, man, they are.
So good live. I hate the fucking Eagles man.
Had a great time I'm. Sure you did.
Show gets out, show gets out andhere's what happens.
Option 1A It's like a choose your own adventure.
A is I'm a little intoxicated from the show and from some pre

(08:08):
gaming at the show and I try to be a clever guy.
You've seen this happen a million times on social media,
that jazz Instagram that I follow.
That's like people falling down and hurting themselves to jazz
music. That happened to me.
I was being a smart ass. And they're not called
stanchions. What are the like the concrete
things that block people from the sidewalks?

(08:28):
You know what those are actuallyfor?
Could stop cars from like curbing people.
They're to prevent terrorism. Oh shit.
Anytime you go into a mall, usually they'll do it like you
know the big concrete post and it's so people can't drive their
cars in the mall. In Orland Square Mall in Orland
Park, IL they had something called anti terrorism flower

(08:50):
pots. Damn, just giant concrete like
flower pots. That just blocked the entrance
so you couldn't drive a car intoit.
Well, I tried to, I tried to jump one of those, but it was
one of those really wide ones and I didn't spread my legs far
enough and I. Destroy your life.
I got them face first. Yeah, Face first in the
concrete. Lost a couple teeth, fractured

(09:11):
my skull a little bit. That's back here in the.
Back. Option B is didn't happen at
Deftones inside in the pit or anything, but as we're leaving
in the crowd, right, like you're, you're packed in there
as you're leaving those stadium shows.
The the the herd. The herd we get right outside
the door and this kid in front of me, they must have been

(09:34):
talking about the pit. I don't know what the hell they
were doing, kids being kids, buthe like mimicked the pit and
threw his elbow back and just jacked me right in the face with
his elbow. Not at the show, leaving the
show. In the herd.
Boom in the herd elbow to the face and didn't even I guess
didn't even realize because he walked away as my friends took
care of me. And then option C is we get out

(09:58):
of the concert and it's heard you can't, you're not going to
get an Uber out of there. And so we grab some of those
like electric scooters. You love those things.
You zip around, you zip around cities in those things all the
time. We're so we're zipping around
Baltimore in those things. And I curbed that motherfucker

(10:18):
and just face planted into the sidewalk.
So vote on which of those you believe is correct.
Let. Me tell you something in the
poll. Your.
Delivery outstanding. There's a British show where
it's literally 2 panels of comedians and they just, they
tell a story and the story's either a lie or a truth and the
other team has to guess if it's real or not.

(10:38):
And I watch that show a lot and it's fun.
Practice this delivery. I thought I considered what my
options were. At least I didn't practice the
delivery. OK.
It was great. Great delivery.
I appreciate it. Yeah, dude.
So how you been? Well, I'm a cyclist now.
Oh, full on. Full on.
Do you wear the Do you wear the gear?
Do you have the padded padded rear padded keister?

(11:00):
They came via Amazon today. I wasn't home together.
Speaking of coming via postal carrier, you're the little early
birthday present. I know there's so much for me at
home. I've got that.
I've got a new pack because November 5th I'm headed to
Japan. That's right, dude.
Wow. Wow.

(11:21):
Yeah, and there's a lot going on.
Lot going on. I'm a cyclist.
I rode 35 miles the other day. Good for you.
Hell yeah. Dude, I could tell you Ivan that
far. You loving it?
I'm loving it. I have a short attention span,
so anything I can do to change up like a fitness routine gets
me like reinvigorated. You know, I did rowing for a

(11:43):
while, did running for a while. Now cycling is kind of, I'm
still running, but cycling has been my thing.
I'm a cyclist so. Well also cycling quicker change
of sceneries during the workout too, so probably more
interesting for you. Yeah.
Well, be careful. I don't want you to have an
injury doing that. I know.
Already in my first. And hurt cycling.

(12:05):
I'm a clip pedal guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Have you ever Have you ever doneit?
I've only clipped in on stationary bikes.
That seems scary. Clipped in in a moving bike and
only had one intersection fall so far.
OK. Where I was trying to clip,
putting on clips fell fast enough.
Just like literally just fell over on my side.

(12:26):
Yep, which is so embarrassing. Well, for sure, but at least it
wasn't like getting hit by a caror.
Not yet. You know.
I've got fun music related topics.
Do we have music news? Do we have?
Fucking I've got music news. I've got music news.
Do you want to talk about the weather?

(12:50):
I'm ready to too freaking hot here.
That's my weather. News, man, I'm over.
It too too freaking hot. It was 88° on Sunday in.
Chicago, I'm done. I'm over it.
It's it's autumn. Give me autumn.
Give me autumn weather right now.
It's fun, right? That was music news time.
Or sorry, that was weather time for music news.

(13:16):
All right. This was the only old one I had
that was already in my phone from last season that we never
talked about. But did you see the new Spinal
Tap movie? There's a new Spinal Tap movie.
Yeah, I knew that. I have not seen it.
I haven't either. It kind of came and went, man,
like without a lot of fanfare. It's a bit of a bummer.
Like I'm gonna, I'm gonna for sure go see it, but it's like I

(13:38):
just went to the movies on Sunday and it wasn't there, so.
It came out. Like 2 weeks ago, the new Paul
Thomas Anderson movie. The one battle after another.
One of the best movies you've ever seen.
Fantastic, dude. It was fantastic.
So good. That car chase scene.
Oh my God, that car chase scene.Dude can't even really call it a
chase scene. That car dialogue that was

(13:59):
happening between those cars, right?
Dialogue is a good way to put it.
One of the best movies I've everseen in a long time.
Long time. Did we recently talk about how
I'm bummed that there's no original movies anymore?
Yeah, we did talk about that. Everything's a reboot or
everything's a. Reboot or a comic, live action,
everything's the same, and that was the best original movie I've
seen in a long time. I also saw the the Naked Gun.

(14:24):
Was that Neeson, the Naked Gun reboot?
Not very good. No, they tried.
They tried to do it the right way.
You get a serious actor to be goofy.
That's kind of like what those old ones were too.
But yeah, yeah, but Spinal Tap 2, it let us know in the
comments if you saw it and if it's good, because it came out
like 2 weeks ago in that time ofrecording this shit.
Three weeks ago maybe. And I've heard nobody talking.

(14:45):
About recorded in a fucking age.I know, all right #2 Bad Bunny's
gonna be performing at the SuperBowl, just announced.
I feel about that. Stoked.
It's fine. I haven't been.
I mean, that's not true. I was stoked on Kendrick.
I wasn't stoked on the weekend. Who was before the weekend?
Rihanna. Question mark fine.
Did you see Adele turned it down?

(15:06):
No. They offered it to Adele and she
turned it down. Good.
Good for her. I don't.
Know that she gets it. They don't get paid to do it
like it. It's does she need it?
Really? I mean, I'm cool.
I'm stoked for Bad Bunny. It'll be great.
It'll he'll put on a show. I recently heard something about
Adele where she sued Spotify. Did you hear about this?

(15:27):
No, Adele sued Spotify because when you click play, when you
open a Spotify artist, it shuffles their songs.
It doesn't automatically start to play something in order.
It either plays their top five most listened or it shuffles the
the library with catalogues and shuffle.
And she's like, do you know how much fucking time and effort and

(15:50):
work and energy I put in to the order in which the songs are
played on my albums? And so like, I guess she like
went toe to toe with Spotify because she because she.
Cares about how her music is presented.
Yeah. Yeah, that's awesome.
Good for her. I like Dell.
Dell's awesome. She's great.

(16:11):
Taylor Swift broke her own pre sale or pre save Spotify pre
save record for her for the new record.
Most pre saves of all time. That's not surprising, but it's
news. I mean, sure, another record
broken. Sure.
By Taylor. Oh, she got engaged, I guess
since we recorded last two, but everybody knows that by now.

(16:31):
My last piece of music news, andthis is really for you, but did
you see Axel Rose is launching agraphic novel?
Nope, but I'll go out and buy itthe day it comes out.
It is described as a cyberpunk graphic novel called Appetite
for Destruction. I'm on.
I'm in. No, no, no.
It's. Axel like you.

(16:52):
It's Axel like you've never seenhim before, on the front lines
of a battle for humanity's future.
Yeah, I'm here for it. Do whatever you want, Axel.
There it is. All right, that's music news.
That's what I got for music news.
OK. And the last thing we'll say
before we get the guest in is thanks for being patient and
waiting for Season 5 to start. We've got a handful of episodes

(17:16):
set to record. Do you?
Know any times I've texted Doug?Is it texted or text?
I don't know either either. Anyway, you know many times I've
texted Doug about the Season 5 little Gimmicks commercial.
Just teasing it. Just teasing it.
You're about to hear it does. Top five best things you've ever
done. Thank you.

(17:37):
I was proud of the last one. The AI one, it was fine, just
fine. I was proud of it.
I thought this one was fine. This one is next level.
All right, well, you're going tohear it in a second, but
Speaking of little gimmicks and stickers and whatnot, we also
just, I put a bunch of new merchon the website, so go check that
out. Yep, join the Patreon, check out

(17:58):
the new merch, welcome to Season5, and let's get this little
little thing kicked off. Fantastic.
Why, hello there. It's me, John Gobblecon, host of
the number one comedy podcast inthe world if you don't Google
it. This is for little gimmicks.

(18:20):
This is for their pod. Oh, wait, no little gimmicks.
Carl, let me try this again. Oh my God, You think being the
number one comedy podcast host in the world, I would be really
good at AD reads? But I am dyslexic.
Sorry, dyslexic. I would say the word backwards.
Anyways, this is for the podcastknown as Mixtape.

(18:44):
Yeah, entering season 5. And they want you to know their
sponsor that they love little gimmicks, which by the way, I'm
not really a fan of gimmicks. Yeah, I mean bands that dress it
up and wear bass and stuff seemsa little cheap, but hey, this is
a sticker company and they're awesome, so make sure to check
out little gimmicks right now. 5fellow podcasters.

(19:08):
Mention how to make a mixtape podcast.
You receive 10% off your stickerorder.
To order, e-mail doug@littlegimmicks.com or visit
at Little Doc Gimmicks on Instagram.
Little Gimmicks B plus stickers that hold up to this.
How to? Make mix tape.

(19:29):
Tony, did you realize that you're the 1st guest of Season
5? I did not.
So, and you want to know what else, in addition to being the
1st guest to season 5, you're the 1st guest that has to follow
this season 5 little gimmicks adwhich we can talk about now
because it's played. OK, Yeah.
It has played. You haven't heard it yet, but
Rod bought a cameo from John Gobblecon from Necro.

(19:54):
Gobblecon that that is who does the ad for little gimmicks for
season 5 and it's fucking fantastic because he messes it.
All up, he fucks it up completely.
He fucks it up so good. Tony, welcome to the pod, the
curator of the Midwest Vintage Fest.
If you haven't attended one in Missouri or Wisconsin, Tony's
the one that makes it happen. And then you support Illinois

(20:16):
and Iowa. Is that right?
Yep. Yep.
And it's all things badass vintage.
What are some of the locations where you've hosted the event?
Because I know that there's beencrazy places that you've hosted.
We've done Madison, WI, Milwaukee, WI at the
Harley-Davidson Museum inside ofPfizer forum where the Milwaukee
Bucks play. We just did Columbia, MO at

(20:39):
Mizzou this coming weekend. We're in Peoria at Bradley
University, so we've got pretty much every college town in the
Midwest we've been to or going to this year.
With just the sickest curated good vintage.
I think so, yeah. You got like a website or
Instagram to point people toward.
They can go to wivintagefest.comfor all Wisconsin stuff or

(21:03):
Wisconsin vintage fest on Instagram.
Is there a vintage fest on Instagram?
Illinois Vintage Fest on Instagram or Iowa's is IA
Vintage Fest on Instagram there. We go damn cool.
What a cool. It's like the ultimate all the
time scavenger hunt job. Yeah, basically.
And then you get to see people find stuff that they had as a

(21:25):
kid or stuff that they've been looking for forever and just see
the excitement over some stuff that you know to you might not
be important or cool, but to them is like the most exciting
and coolest thing ever. Do you have something in your
collection, Tony, that is like the item that you found that is
that item for you I. Do have, so like we're we're

(21:46):
doing intro to 3rd wave emo here.
That like that's kind of what I like got me into vintage.
Honestly was like, I couldn't ever find some of these bands
shirts at I guess we had Sam Goody in Saint Louis.
They didn't carry some of the stuff that I was into.
And it was like too obscure for Hot Topic at the time because it
wasn't like cool to listen to that stuff.

(22:06):
So it was hard to find. So now I find myself going back
and buying all of the like 2000semo band stuff.
But I do have a Anaheim Mighty Duck shirt from the animated
series that came out in 1993 that I think is probably like
my, yeah, my favorite thing. It's definitely the most
expensive thing that I own for sure.
Like in your life? I well vintage T-shirt like.

(22:28):
A vintage collection. Yeah, yeah.
Got it. OK.
I was going to say, Jesus Christ, what is this T-shirt
worth? But OK, I get it.
OK, All right. Makes total sense.
Rod, I know that you're a big fan.
You're a big vintage. T Guy.
Yeah. Do you have a?
Do you have a favorite go to? Well, I hit up some of the
fests. I'm on the East Coast, Tony, but
I there's been a few kind of conventions around here I've

(22:49):
gone to. I've got a couple really great
vintage stores here in Richmond.Oh yeah, you're in if you're
there. There's a new one, newish one.
Yeah. Caught.
There's a place called Cobble Store, Rexco Sea Blues.
There's a lot of really good vintage stores here.
I found some cool shit. One of my favorite things,
though, I didn't even have to buy.
My buddy Cody got a bought a hatat a vintage store that didn't

(23:11):
fit him right. And he was like, hey, I got this
hat that I think will look good on you.
Gives it to me. It turns out to be a inaugural
Brickyard 400 hat that I owned because my dad bought it for me
at the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994 and brought it home for
me. And I, you know, got rid of it
at some point in my life. And then my buddy Cody gives me
one. It's fantastic.

(23:32):
Purple brim, old 90s Brickyard 400 logo.
It's got the date on the back, you know, like that's just cool.
Like you find something you had as a kid or that you or your
friend had that you always wanted but couldn't get, and now
you can get it. Or like, you know, you can get
yourself another North Carolina starter jacket, Donnie, if you
want. I never had North Carolina
starter Jackets starter Chicago.Come on, Chicago.

(23:55):
OK. So obviously.
Well, that's why you would have had North Carolina 'cause it was
Michael Jordan. Everything, dude.
Michael Jordan College Bulls socks.
Everybody had Michael Jordan or everybody.
Everybody had bulls for sure. Everybody had a bull starter
jacket. But my second was not a starter
jacket. It was an apex.
Is Apex cool Tony? Yeah, yeah, it's not as cool as

(24:17):
starter, but I mean, it's prettymuch the same thing.
I had an Apex Miami Hurricanes jacket that was from the Swap
Arama flea market in Alsop and then I did have the Mighty Ducks
and Iraq pullover. There is a photo of me in the
front cover of junior high yearbook shooting a starting

(24:37):
pistol for a race in my Mighty Ducks pullover.
Hell. Yeah, so now I got to find you
in my. I think my dad committed
insurance fraud for that. I think I might have had it like
a Anaheim or Mighty Ducks starter, like windbreaker, like
not the anorak coat, but like a windbreak.
I had something Mighty Ducks. I think I had that same hat that

(25:00):
you're wearing right now, Tony the Brown.
Or. Similar one, I think it was a.
Black. Or maybe black and like
burgundy, I don't know. Anyway, Tony, as you mentioned,
3rd wave emo, 3rd wave emo, why did you want to go with that
theme? I don't know.
For me, that's kind of like whenI really started finding music

(25:23):
that I liked on my own. Like my childhood best friend,
he liked Slipknot, so I like Slipknot.
He liked 311. I like 311.
Like this era of music is kind of when I was able to kind of
pick what I liked and like, listen to things on my own
rather than just being fed what I was already hearing, like, I

(25:44):
don't know. And then just being able in the
era of like Myspace and just spending hours on Myspace
listening to people's like Myspace songs and finding bands
that way. Like to me, this is kind of the,
this era of music pretty much shaped kind of who I am today.
It's crazy as it is, but like, this really is who I am because

(26:05):
of that era. It was funny when I started
researching 3rd wave emo becauseI started to think about what
led me here. Do you know?
Do you guys remember Rod? I think we've talked about this
before too. Do you remember when?
Or maybe this isn't the case. Tony, did you transition from a
track listener to an album listener prior to third wave

(26:25):
emo? Or were you just tracks?
And then as you got in the thirdwave emo, it was like, OK, I'm
listening to all albums. No, I mean as a kid, like I
liked Slipknot, so I owned the Slipknot CD and I would just
only listen to that and then that's kind of how it was.
So for if anything I'd say more, this era is kind of when I got
into just like the tracks because they would be one song

(26:50):
on Myspace. So then I would go download it
on Limewire and I couldn't find the CD.
So I think it kind of flip-flopped for me.
Fucking Limewire. Yeah dude I forgot that like
third wave emo is probably the intro to a lot of downloaded
music as well. Yeah, yeah.
There's also the message board. There was a while where you
could still share music and message boards and people just

(27:11):
share tracks on those. I don't know if you guys
remember those back in the day too, before they started to get
moderate, but yeah, that that whole Wild West of the Internet
era, so. Rod Roderick, did you do a bunch
of fucking research to find out?Like to talk about the waves?
No, no, because I already, I've won.
I've done it already. I've read the books and stuff

(27:32):
and it they I don's teeing me upTony because he knows I have
strong feelings on the classification of music.
And I'm going to curb that for this because what my opinion,
hold on my why, dude, my opinionon what a certain wave is or
isn't is kind of irrelevant because it's never been

(27:53):
qualitative anyway. I don't like what you like.
I don't like putting music in buckets because I think it's
one's better than the other. I just like it.
So if somebody comes to me and they're like, oh, you should
listen to this whatever grunge band, I know that it's probably
going to be a band from Washington in the late 80s or
early 90s. Like I'm not thinking of a, you
know what I mean? Like it's a classification

(28:14):
thing. So I don't know.
I'll get. A.
I'll get a little, I'll get a little nerdy.
Basically what he's saying, Tony, is that there's a small
contingent of us. God, this makes me sound
completely pretentious. There's a small contingent of us
online and most of us live in Reddit.
And I don't, I don't even have Reddit or have a Reddit account.

(28:36):
But who don't? Who think there's been 5 waves
of emo, not 4. And I'm in that.
I'm in that five waves of emo camp.
So what most people call third wave I think was the 4th wave.
But you know what? I don't care.
It's irrelevant. I know when we're talking about,
we're talking about what, like 2000?
2008. Maybe 2008 nine.

(28:57):
Yeah, like. Yeah, most of mine are like.
I'm going to bring this. O2O3.
Yeah, it's the mall emo area. I'm going to bring this full
circle. I'm going.
To bring this full circle, OK, so there's a Zach Galifianakis
stand up where he talks about like he does impressions of
funny people and he does the thelike the three-year old or the

(29:19):
five year old that's mad that hehas a beard.
Like I don't like having a beard.
It hots and then he does the pretentious illiterate and he
takes off his glasses and he says, I already told you I can't
read. And it's really adding to a lot
of your pretentiousness right now, Rodrick, that you're
missing your front fucking. Yeah, I'm missing my teeth that
I look like a massive Hick rightnow.
I'm gonna say hockey player, but.

(29:41):
Yeah, yeah, say hockey player. It really adds to your
pretentiousness that you're missing your fucking teeth right
now. It adds to my emo cred is what
it does. Yeah, it does it totally.
You know front lines during the second wave, you know.
Get out of here. Get out here with that third
wave stuff and that 4th wave stuff.
No, I'm just, I like. Here's the other thing is I like
stuff from all of it. To me, it's a sound thing.
I think the second wave sounded a certain way, but not that all

(30:05):
those bands sound the same by any means, but there was like a
thing happening. 9:00 During thesecond wave, you weren't you
weren't living it. It's music you went back and
spent time with. It over.
Well, that's the thing that overlaps.
So there's like second wave bands that are putting shit out
in like the mid 2000s stuff thatstarted in the 90s.
Yeah, get up kids, save the day.Like, you're probably going to

(30:25):
pick some of those bands, aren'tyou?
We'll see. I don't know.
We'll see. All right, I don't want to get
into that. We're we're, I'm not going to
challenge anybody actually. You know what it is, Don, you
know what it is? It's not about the emo waves.
It's about when I when we were living through that, all three
of us were living through that. I just remember being like, like
there's bands that people say are emo now that nobody called

(30:46):
emo at the time. Like they were like pop punk
bands, for example. It was like they're pop punk
band. They're pop punk band.
And now they're labeled as e-mail.
I don't want to say who because what if one of you guys haven't?
Then I sound like an asshole because.
Who cares? Then you got to.
Then you got to tell us how muchof an asshole you are.
It's probably a band I listen to.
But like you notice some of those emo nights or like see

(31:06):
some of the playlists that the the emo night things are playing
and they have like the killers on there.
There's like Limp Bizkit, like that stuff to me that wouldn't
be emo. Those are just like.
No. With songs from that time.
But like, yeah I get what you'resaying where I I don't classify
a lot of the stuff people say. Is emo really considered emo to

(31:29):
me? It yeah, it's be we could talk
about this forever. It's just become, you know,
anything with emotion they say is emo now.
It's like, no, it was like a genre, but it's fine.
It's look here. Here's the thing.
Here's the thing, Don. None of this is about quality of
music. I love.
I love music, man. So it's whatever.
I'm just, there's some somewheredeep in me.

(31:50):
There's like a hidden librarian.Yeah, that just likes to catalog
things. I don't know what it is.
So yeah, you know what? I'm tired of reading the rules.
And so we're gonna say. Season 5 is officially We're
done reading the rules I. Don't know, Hey, listeners, tell
us if you miss them or not. But like at this point, you
know, hey Tony, if somebody picks an artist, you don't get
to pick that artist. You got to audible to something

(32:12):
else, right? So like that's the basically the
only rule that we ever really enforce on this anyway.
So no repeat artists. Otherwise, do what you want.
Tony, you want to go for a second or third, I'll go. 1st I
guess. That's a smart move, a smart
move, especially with a topic like this, because if you take
an artist that we would have wanted, then we're Ruptures

(32:34):
Creek. So you got to have
contingencies. All right, who's your first
contribution? Season 5 third wave Emo who do
you got? Taking Back Sunday Cute without
the E. It's a great start.

(33:04):
It's a great. Start to be.
I love it. What do you what do you love
about this song? Band that needs to hang it up,
go ahead. Well, they did get their they
did get Fred back and he somehowI must have he probably like
signed a contract with them so that Adam Lazaro has to like
actually sing because if you've seen videos with Fred recently,

(33:25):
Adam is actually trying to sing and he sounds good and they're
playing like. A lot of.
The Fred's songs, so it's it's honestly really exciting to be a
Taking Back Sunday fan just in the time being.
But yeah, I, I agree. Like I, I saw them during that
era of tell all your friends. And like even then I felt like
they should have hung it up because he didn't sound great

(33:46):
then. But like it, it does sound much
better than they did 20 years ago.
They sound better live now than they did 20 years ago.
Yeah, because like. I could I could see that Don
they back in the day they it wasa little style over that was.
The big joke with that mics are for singing, not for swinging.
And then I remember that whole, that whole thing, but like I saw

(34:11):
like footage of them like 2 years ago playing like an emo
cruise and he was doing head stands on a keyboard.
Like he wasn't singing at all. He was like out of his fucking
mind. So if you're saying that it's
better now that dude's back in the band, I'm going to take your
word for it, but I have not seenthat yet.
But I believe you. Yeah, it's it.
They sound so much better. But yeah, Adam does more stage

(34:34):
antics than I think. Anyone else I've ever seen,
ever. So much gyrating like he just
is. He's moving non-stop and it's of
no value. It's a lot.
It's a lot. He's gone.
He's he's like hippie core now too.
He's got the long hair and he wears like long flowy thing.
Him and man, him and Davey Havocactually kind of together have a

(34:55):
little bit of a thing going on as they're getting old.
Davey Havoc's new look is something else.
I love it. I saw someone someone said
whatever happened to all the dudes that wore the like big sun
hat and suspenders in like 2012 and then they were like Google
Davey Havoc. There was a photo, there was a

(35:17):
photo of Davey Havoc. There were three photos of him
and it was him now and then it was him like probably.
Sing the sorrow here. December underground.
And then there was him like. Light blue streak in his hair
like almost like Karen hair likethere.
Was. Him and then there was him and

(35:38):
what is the what's the first onethat looks like the front is the
cemetery? What's that album?
Art of drowning. Art of Drowning and it was like
mom and dad taking their son to their first show.
It was just three different Davey Havocs, which is so funny.
He he dresses, he dresses like Bea Arthur from Golden Girls on
like a Saturday, on like a lounge day where she doesn't

(35:58):
have to leave the house. You know that's how he dresses
now. I recently found out that in
Golden Girls they were in their early to mid 40s.
I know, dude. Or like, no, not 40s.
It was like 50s. It was way too young, dude.
Oh, you mean their actual age? You mean their actual age?
Like Blanche was portraying a 42year old woman.

(36:19):
What? Yes, dude.
No way that was. Amazing.
I don't even think she's still ababy, but I mean that means a
lot to me that I'm the age of a golden girl.
All right, we got a little off topic there.
Do do. This is one of those.
I'm curious if you guys do too. This is one of those albums.
I vividly remember my first listen to this record.

(36:41):
I Yeah, I was on. I was on tour and our singer
bought this at a record store and put it in the van and I'd
never heard, never heard them before.
We were starting to get into like emo, like we're mostly
listen to punk, but we're starting to get into this kind
of stuff. I think we'd all heard Your
Favorite Weapon already, but hadn't heard this from Taking

(37:03):
Back Sunday. I remember it.
I was in shot, I was shotgun. This went on and I'm just like,
oh, we listened to this CD. We wore that fucking thing out
on that tour. Like it's burned into my memory.
Yeah, it's one of those albums for me.
I remember vividly. I was at a party in high school,
I think I was a freshman. I might have been in 8th grade,

(37:23):
might have been junior high, butI just remember sitting on a
couch in the living room with everybody around.
It was super loud and they had this plane and this song without
the E came on. And I immediately stopped
everything I was doing completely and just sat there
and listened to the music. And then I the next day I went
to the mall to buy the CD. Like I remember the first time I

(37:44):
heard that song and then I mean,to me, this is the song that got
me into 3rd wave mall e-mail to me.
But that's the song that did it for me.
And it like, yeah, I vividly remember the first time I heard
it too, which is crazy. Great call.
This is important. Whether I go next or you go
next, who goes next, Roderick? Shit dude, I don't remember, I

(38:05):
didn't look this. You want a rock paper scissor
for it. Well, we can figure this out.
You. You.
Yeah, screw it. It's on shoot. 123 shoot.
OK, it's on shoot. Ready 123.
Shoot. I fucking one.
Can't see what you have. That's scissors.
Your second. OK so the song that introduced
me to 3rd wave evo emo was Thursday and it was

(38:27):
Understanding in a car Crash. You son of a bitch.

(38:55):
They were first on my list that was. 1st on my list.
That was the song that introduced me to 3rd wave emo
and this album was 2000 I think if I remember correctly right
when I looked it up. So I came out of Weezer Green
Day. Weezer Green Day no doubt is
probably where I was living. Maybe a little bit more like

(39:18):
getting more pop punky maybe. I was starting to listen to Less
Than Jake, and then I heard Thursday and I was like, you're
allowed to do that. Like you can fucking yell like
that in songs. And then I was fucking down that
rabbit hole big time. And understanding of the car
crash was like the technicality of the guitar playing, like the

(39:41):
cool heavy slash, not heavy partlike blend of the song, the
coolest logo. Like that band was fucking
awesome. And I remember a similar
situation. First time I heard it, I think I
saw it on MTV and I was like, Yep, I'm running out to buy this
album. I think I rode my bike to
Discount Records and. Yeah, this, this is like, and I

(40:04):
I don't want to get, I'm going to try really hard on this
episode not to get too geeky. But Thursday is one of those
bands that I think illustrates one of the things I like a lot
about third wave emo, which is that you got emo bands that are
going various different directions.
Like Thursday's essentially a post hardcore band, but they're
very much an emo band. They're very much a third wave
emo band. This was it was a steal.

(40:24):
Like I was going to pick Thursday.
That was going to be my lead off.
I'm glad I got it. And I love their sound.
It's and it's, it's when you hear mall emo, you think of like
the pop year emo and you think of that stuff like in general.
But Thursday was huge, dude. When this record came out, they
blew up. They were on MTV and stuff.
And I don't think people remember that.
I don't know what label they were on, but they this record

(40:46):
like dropped and they blew the fuck up.
And the the the video to the song was on MTV.
I remember watching it in the morning and stuff.
So I was going to pick just to get my two cents out there.
I was going to pick Standing on the Edge of Summer.
I just I think it sounds a little more like that third wave
emo thing. It's like a little more chill
and then it gets really heavy. But it you can't really go
wrong, dude. This whole record is great and

(41:08):
understanding in a car crash is fantastic.
So. Tony, you got a relationship
with Thursday. I do, it was the first shirt I
ever stole from Hot Topic in 2003.
Holy shit. Fuck yeah.
It might have been the first shirt I ever bought when I
worked at Hot Topic. All right, cool.
Roderick, over to you. They're fantastic.
Well, you really threw my my shit off here.

(41:30):
I'm. So stoked I got it.
What a good I. Really didn't think they were
going to be like, really Thursday I could have seen being
a steal for sure. Actually, I should have foreseen
that. I thought there were enough
bands that we weren't going to have a steal, but shit.
All right, Well, I wasn't going to pick this one first, but it
feels like I should go like kindof right down the middle on this
lead off because you guys both kicked off with with huge

(41:52):
bangers. Yeah, I realize we've skirted
them a couple times Don cause a slightly problematic singer,
although they're on tour right now and people selling out shows
and shit still, but. I know where we're going.
Even though it's not my favoriteof their songs, I'm going to
pick Sick Transit Gloria Glory fades by brand new.

(42:26):
And I'm picking that song because I think Deja Anton Do
was their most 3rd wave emo record.
It's their most like mall emo record.
And I think this song exemplifies 3rd wave emo so
well. It is just a kid remembering the
first time he had sex but but complaining about it and just
being a little whiny little chump.

(42:49):
And I say that with all due respect because I absolutely
love emo, but like, that's what this song is.
It's like, it's just so complaining.
It's so like high school kid. Everything in my life is the
worst problem I'll ever have in my life.
We have skirted them quite a bit.
We have and but you know what? It sounds like I'm dissing on
them right now, but I absolutelylove Brand New.

(43:11):
I think of all the 3rd wave emo bands, they're probably my
favorite. Like musically, I love this
band. I love the stuff they put out.
After this they just got better and better in my opinion.
But this record was such a big deal when it came out like.
I remember house on the front. Was that before this one?
No, that's the one right after this.

(43:32):
OK, that's the one I'm thinking.About yeah, that's the devil and
God are raging inside me, which amazing record this was their
kind of more. I think this was their best
selling record, though was Deja Anton do this is the one with
the astronaut on the front. The very like, mid like early
2000s album cover with like the oversaturated photoshopped shit

(43:53):
going on. But yeah, man, like the single
was the quiet things that no oneever knows which similar kind of
this album's kind of all like ifyou look at the plays on
Spotify, like this song's got 60million.
The quiet thing is 84,000,000. A lot of these are in the double
digit. This is such a fucking million.
God damn it Rod. Great call.

(44:14):
That baseline dude, that it it just so.
Then when it kicks in with the harmony, it's just so third wave
emo. It's like they're right down the
fucking middle. And there was that battle.
There was that Taking Back Sunday, brand new battle that I
feel like still rages to this day.
They. Hated each other, yeah.

(44:34):
They hated each other, but they toured together, too.
Like taking back Sunday's first headlining tour, Brand new open
for them. They came from the same group of
bands, like, so there's a whole, there's a whole fucking lore
there and the stealing of girlfriends and the T-shirts
making fun of the other person'ssinger.

(44:54):
And I think they're cool now. I just meant fandomize.
It felt like you had to be a fanof one or the other, even though
most people I think were fans ofboth.
It's just you had to go harder for one than the other.
You know? I feel like most people I knew
were were Taking Back Sunday stands.
And I've always kind of, I lovedTaking Back Sunday.
I've seen them more than brand new, but I always fell on the

(45:17):
brand new camp. Also one of the best live shows
I've ever seen. I saw them like 2 days before
that shit came out about Jesse years ago.
So I saw like their second to last show before they broke up
that first time and they crushedit.
But brand new we're sticking them on the list.
Jesse Lacy, Problematic individual.
I guess I was going to stay still, but.

(45:39):
Brandy's Music. Is, you know, it's like it's not
a scarlet letter you guys shake off.
No, got to start with that one. You carry it around.
Yeah, as you should. All right, Tony, back to you.
I've got buried myself alive by the used.

(46:16):
Fuck. Were they on your list?
On they were. On mine they.
Were my next pick and you pickedburied myself alive over
tasting. Yep, Yep, I.
Oh, I would have picked a box ofsharp objects so.
Box of sharp objects secret too late an album.
What? No, it's on the first album.
Sharp objects. So first album it's on the.
First album for me, I found the used during a commercial for the

(46:41):
NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. They had buried myself alive
playing during the commercial and I was like blown away that
they could have that on TV and that the NHL picked it up and
we're playing it. So that's why I buried myself
alive. The Taste of Ink is arguably
their most popular song, but man, I'm so tired of hearing
that song. It comes up on like, every
playlist imaginable where this one doesn't.

(47:04):
But yeah, this is the song that introduced me to the Used.
And I mean, yeah, this album, I have the somewhere.
I have the teeth from the album art tattooed on me like this is
the album for me. Oh yeah, this is the one.
Produced by Yeah, this is the one you know.
Sarah Goldfinger. Famously, John Feldman produced

(47:26):
Yeah. John Feldman.
Singer Goldfinger. Yeah, I have a lot of John
Feldman bands. That's the right call.
This is a band that I think was still releasing good albums
longer than most, but because the genre died they didn't
continue on. Like I think that every album

(47:48):
they put out. Hold on.
I'm trying to get the fucking discography to pull up, but I'm
again only working on one monitor here.
OK, first album for me it's up until.
Canyon. Right up until what the?
Canyon once. Once that album came out, that
was kind of when I lost interestand then they went back to work
with John Feldman and then I gotsuper interested again.
But yeah, the Canyon is is personal.

(48:11):
It is as that is to the band. For me, that was it.
I just like completely gave up on them at that point. 2017 I
mean you were with them for 15 years so that's still I'll be
honest, I have I've only ever heard those first 3 records and
when I say first three I'm including maybe memories, which
was like the. Their EP.

(48:31):
The demos and live thing they put out, yeah.
So I only really knew in Love and Death, maybe Memories in the
self-titled. I was way into that self-titled
record. Also remember the first time I
heard this because my buddy bought it and didn't like it and
gave it to me and I put it on. It was like, this is incredible.
It's a great album. Yeah, I think it's fun.
A lot of a lot of the bands probably on the list probably

(48:52):
heard that and and moved on withwhat they were doing.
Because I mean, to me they used are like some of the the
founders of third wave e-mail tome.
I think that's right. I like the way I think about
like I think some of the third wave bands started around like
2000, you know, and they used would have probably been around
then their first albums 2002, but that's still really early.

(49:14):
But this thing blew up and like it.
A lot of what followed had this sound like a lot of that like
metal and metal core adjacent. Emo was definitely like coming
off the back of the used gettinghuge.
That's and that's how I remembered at the time too.
Like the used kind of had a little bit of both.
It was metal enough for metal kids.

(49:35):
It was punk enough for the for punk people.
It was even like kind of poppy and like the way Burke could
sing and scream and they hit thewarp tour circuit.
So like they kind of hit all thedifferent areas of that emo
crowd. I haven't paid attention in the
last, I don't know, 2 minutes. I know you're you're really busy
doing something. Yeah, again, single monitors the
devil's toy, but also I had to add a song to the list right now

(49:59):
as a result of Tony you. Didn't have audibles man ready
to go. But I had to pick.
I had to change it all together because you guys started talking
about cool shit and then I didn't pay attention to what you
said, but I had to add the song.I have 19 bands on this list
dude. Like I had no idea what I was
going. To go Christ.
OK, let me cross off my used song because Tony took that one.
No taste of ink. That's fine.

(50:20):
You guys remember Macbeth shoes?Oh yeah.
Of course, the footwear of the the footwear of the genre.
Everybody with an Atticus T-shirt on had some Macbeth
shoes on. For sure.
OK, company Roderick and I used to work for Roderick, Still
does. Originally carried Macbeth
shoes, one of the only places you could get them.
And back in the day, small company Macbeth reached out and

(50:42):
said, hey, we've got a show coming to the metro in Chicago.
We've got a couple free passes. If you guys would like to go,
we'd love to have you come out and kind of gave some of the
employees that were working for the store a bunch of free
passes. We go to the show.
The show is The Used and Finch headlining.
Co headlining. OK, so if you had Finch, sorry,
not my song choice, but we're gonna get there.
Have I told this story on the fucking podcast?

(51:03):
I don't think so. OK.
I don't think Finch has ever come up on this podcast.
I'm stoked they are right now. OK, cool.
I did some research on there. We'll go.
I wouldn't really talk about Finch, but either way.
So the used and Finch are headlining and it's a Co
headlining probably 2000 and two2003.
Tony, what year did taste the Inc come out or what year did
the self title come out 2000? 1-2 Thousand, 2002. 1002. 2002.

(51:27):
They're playing at the metro famous Chicago venue, really
fucking cool venue and we have cool passes.
We have cool guy passes from Macbeth footwear to go to the
show cause Finch had a Macbeth shoe.
Also they were vegan before Finch and the Used plays.
There's a band that's opening for Finch and The Used and I'm
like, who are these fucking nerds dressed like fucking

(51:52):
leather jacket? Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
vampires, like these guys are a bunch of fucking dorks.
This guitar player has stupid hair.
This band is going to fucking suck.
And it was My Chemical Romance. And the song choice is going to
be head first for Halos. Which is off of My Chem's very

(52:37):
first album. Their emo album.
Their emo album, which was I brought you bullet, I Brought
You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
That was their emo. You wouldn't say that they were
emo pass this album. I think they are.
It's fine. They're fucking up.
We talked about them. They're they're theater.
They're theater rock. They're whatever Queen in Coheed
And Cambria is which. Is cool now they're emo and the

(52:57):
song is head first for Halos. They were one of the most
energetic bands I ever saw live.Especially like opening for
Finch and the Used. And I think that cause Finch and
the Used alternated, who was headlining from day-to-day.
And I think the day that we went, Finch headlined.
So the Used plays first, but it went Mike and the Used, Finch

(53:20):
and Bert threw up on stage. Pretty typical.
And then Finch had a lot of wacky lights.
But I remember being blown the fuck away by My Chemical Romance
at this show, buying the record from their merch booth.
And then this was the soundtrackto like the next few months.
But yeah, head first for Halos is the song Mike Comes the band.

(53:41):
That was the band that I was looking up while you guys were
talking about the end of Used. This is just one of those bands,
dude, that like I illustrates what I'm talking about.
Like I don't personally hear a lot of emo when I listen to
them, but they're incredible. Like that's not a qualitative
thing. They're amazing musicians.
They're probably too good to be emo.
They're just like too good musicians, like and like,

(54:02):
they're so theatrical and they're so over the top and I
love everything about it. I bet they were Amazing Life.
I would have hated to have My Chemical Romance open up for my
band at any point. Not that I was ever gonna pay,
You know, like, in theory. Because they're gonna, they're
gonna be better than you. They're gonna be better live
than you. What was crazy is that this was
so early. Like, this was like nobody had
any fucking clue who they were. Like, yeah, they looked like the

(54:25):
vampires from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Like leather jackets, white makeup, black eyes.
Like they looked like little ghouls.
Yeah, they must have. Started.
They must have started get garnering a lot of attention on
this album though because I remember I remember there being
hype about them before 3 Cheers for Sweet Revenge came out

(54:46):
because I was in college when that came out.
And I remember this huge lead upto three Cheers for Sweet
Revenge because people were so excited for this new My Chemical
Romance album to come out. And so they must have, it's
probably because that live show and stuffed on right.
Like if they were touring with like the used and bands like
that, to Tony's point, like these influential bands that are
like blowing up third wave emo and stuff and you're on tour

(55:07):
with them, you're probably getting all this attention.
And that was back when there wasthings like MTV 2 and stuff that
were actually showing like thosekind of music videos.
So, you know, I, I just rememberwhen this, when Three Cheers
came out in the lead up to it, there was a lot of talk about it
and it would have had to come from this record because this

(55:27):
was the one before, right beforethat.
So I'm not surprised they're on this.
They're they're like, they're like the probably the poster
kids for 3rd wave emo. It doesn't matter if I think
they are or not. Who cares?
They're they're like the poster band for it.
So yeah. Yeah, they they were next for
me, but. Yours.
I stole them. Were they next for you?
You did. You did steal them.

(55:47):
What was your what was your song, Tony?
I put I'm not OK on there because that was the song that
introduced me to. Them.
Oh yeah. Which shame that was the first
song of theirs I ever heard yeah, arguably their most emo
song like that's very third waveemo, that song.
So I'm arguing with myself a little bit now, but that song is
very third wave emo. I one I love that the guitar

(56:11):
player in the photo on Spotify, them as a four loco shirt on
stoked on that second. So far there's been 2 bands that
I had on my list already. And then the other, the other
bands that were picked, I assumed would be picked.
So we're we're tracking. We're tracking so far.
I feel like we're covering the genre well.
We're doing great. All right, let me throw a

(56:32):
curveball in. Maybe not a curveball for you,
Don or Tony. I don't know, Tony.
I don't know you. I'm not going to assume
anything. This is a little early, but I
feel like this is very much like, oh, like you heard this
and you're like, oh, things are changing, but I'm going to pick
the Juliana theory. You remember them, Don.
Fuck yeah, I remember the Juliana theory.
I'm going to go. I'm not going, I'm going.
If I told you this was killing me, would you stop?

(57:25):
Because that's much more of an emo song than the other one.
What was the other one that was even bigger?
We're, we're at the top of the world.
That's like a pop song, man. This I, I remember listening to
this album on my, my first year of college, I commuted, I went
to IPY, which was a commuter school.
So before I transferred. So I drove like 40 minutes to

(57:46):
school every day and back, and Iburned the shit out of three
albums. I forget the name of the Bad
Religion album, but the one that's Supersonic on it, Sing
the Sorrow by AFI and this Juliana Theory album, Just like,
just churn through those fuckingthings on those drives.
And this band was like, I think this came out in 2000.

(58:09):
Yeah. So I, I just remember when this
came out, you were like, oh, this is this this you're going
to start hearing a lot of bands like this.
It felt like they listened to like the get up kids and I
listen to that stuff, but they were like, we want to make
something that could be on the radio too.
And so they like merge that shit, which I think is what a
lot of like mall emo era stuff tried to do, is like, can we be
punk? Can we be hardcore?

(58:31):
Can we be emotional? Can we also make stuff that
could possibly be on the radio? Most of it never was, but I feel
like that was kind of the vibe we're getting.
And Julian Ethere straight up again, I don't think they were
probably ever on mainstream radio, but they were going for
that sound for sure. They're great.
Tony, did you, did you have the digits of the Juliana theory at
all? I saw them live a few times but

(58:52):
I literally never listened to their music.
Like outside of the shows. I know the I know the band, but
I've never listened to their music.
It's funny because. When you said the Juliana theory
and you asked for the other track, I said the moon is down
which is further seems. Further, Seems Forever.
Which is the Juliana theory's theory's first.
If you listen to Juliana Theory, you should listen to this band
to. Further Seems Forever.

(59:14):
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, so further seems so The Moon is Down was on my initial
list, and then I'm like that second wave, so I took it off.
But it's Chris Carrabba's. It's Chris.
Chris Carrabba's band before Dashboard Confessional.
He's the singer on that. I know, no shit Sherlock, but at
the same time like that's not second wave.
I'm saying this guy. The Moon is Down came out in

(59:34):
2001. Yeah, but like sound wise, what
were happening? At the same time, you don't
know. Yeah, it doesn't sound like a
third wave band at all to me. That's probably why Chris left.
Chris is like, this will never be on the fucking radio.
Get Me Out of here. Same.
Time. Yeah.
He was playing in both bands at the same time.
Shut the fuck up. It's a great call.
The Giuliana theory belongs on the list.

(59:55):
Yeah, do you know, do you know this song, though, Don like the.
That that first album, I guess it's their only album, isn't it?
No, they put out like four or five.
Oh, then it's their first album, yeah.
Yeah, it's their first. No, it's their second.
They've had one in 99. Wow, I listen to this album a
lot. Yeah, this is the only one I
listen to. Like did they put out an EP in

(01:00:18):
2022? Have you seen the footage of the
My Chemical Romance concerts? The new ones.
Yeah. Like the current ones?
I've seen quite a bit of footage, yeah.
Tony, have you seen it? Yeah, I have.
It's nuts. The theatrics that are going
along with that, where they're passing out cards and like that
and people trying like there's a, it looks like fucking ghost,

(01:00:39):
like people are going to a ghostshow, but it's my chem.
Like there's all sorts of fucking lore around made-up
characters and shit. But they do like a costume, so
they do the Black Parade stuff and it's all like that, and they
leave and then they change into normie clothes and then they
come back out and they do old stuff.
Did you say normie clothes? Yeah, normie clothes, just like

(01:01:00):
T-shirts and jeans. Yeah, totally.
Good job saying normie clothes. Tony, we're back over to you.
All right, I'll go thrice. Song is Paper Tigers.

(01:01:32):
Who is that off illusion of safety?
Or is that artisan ambulance? Artisan Ambulance.
Where did you get thrice from? Like where did you first like?
How did you collect Thrice? Because they were, they were one
of those bands that was like we've said it before, like I
think that they were your favorite bands.
Favorite band. I think that the bands that were
popular in 3rd wave were listening to Thrice, but Thrice

(01:01:54):
never really broke through. So where did you get Thrice
from? Well, they broke through.
Now they're on like mainstream radio.
They're like a radio rock band now.
But I worked at a yeah, they're like huge now.
It's kind of crazy. I worked at a skate park in
Saint Louis, Yeah. And all of the kids that rode
BMX were super into Thrice. And we had ACD player that we

(01:02:18):
could just kind of plug in whatever, listen to whatever.
And this one kid just loved Thrice and the kind of like,
force it on me. And then I just really, really
got into it. And then Paper Tigers was kind
of the start of me listening to like a little bit heavier stuff
because that's the song that's like mostly all screaming on
that album, which is way different than anything else on

(01:02:38):
the Artisan, the Ambulance. So that pushed me a little bit
further into like metal core, I guess with like emos adjacent
metal core, not like true hardcore.
I'm so blown away that Thrice isa big band now.
Have either of you ever listenedto Dustin's Dustin Kinsru's solo
stuff? No, the singer, no.

(01:02:59):
It's worth a listen. It's fantastic.
He is an incredible songwriter. What is really, really good
shit? What is it like?
It's not like, I mean, it's not like Thrice.
It's singer-songwriter Y stuff like acoustic guitar, folksy
stuff. What's his name?
Dustin What? Kensru KENSRUE.

(01:03:20):
I'm going to give it a whirl. It's, yeah, I think you'll
really dig it, Don. But I that it, it kind of just
shows a songwriting ability and I think that's it's made me
listen to Thrice a little bit differently and appreciate them
even more. I mean, I was into them like
Illusion of Safety and Artisan Ambulance were heavy, heavy
hitters for me. Yeah, the ambulance was huge.
Yeah, awesome musicians. I remember, Don, you know, I'm

(01:03:41):
big on album art. When this album came out, there
was a special edition. I don't miss my CD collection
much, but I do miss every once in a while it'll be something
I'm like, man, I wish I saw thatCD.
They put out a limited edition version of the CD that was like
one of those soft pack ones where like if you're looking at
the cover, the white was the actual cover.

(01:04:02):
But then the picture of like that hospital and the telephone
pole, that was actually a whole stack of different cards that
came out. And you could switch what the
cover looked like across different photographs.
And there was probably like 10 of them.
And the back of each of them I think was the song lyrics.
So it's probably 1 card for eachsong, so 12 I guess.
And I don't have, man, I wish I still had that.

(01:04:23):
It was so sick. And I've actually looked, I
don't think they ever put out like a vinyl like that.
I think it was just the CD that had that so.
That's cool. There's another one of those
bands like Thursday, man, like that.
It's got like this, got some like MTV play, like the artist,
like the song artist in Ambulance had that.
That song I remember. That music video?
God. Damn, you're right, Tony.

(01:04:44):
They averaged over a million monthly listeners.
Yeah, they're, I think it's likesomething honey or like black
honey I think is like they're, Yeah, that song is like all
over. Well, it's been a few years, but
it was all over, like pretty much mainstream radio for a
while, which is crazy. What the fuck?

(01:05:04):
What? They put out four new songs this
year, Don, and one of them is already in there.
One of them is in their top fiveright now.
Two of them are albatross. You know the most listened to
city. Oh, let me guess, Chicago?
It is Chicago, IL, believe it ornot.
Oh, shocking, who? Would have thought, is it my
turn? Yes.
Christ, I'm going to do the spill canvas staple gun, but

(01:05:27):
once you staple got it right to.My side all over the tight world
Do I have just buried out for you, screaming in your face.
Oh. The chemistry between us can

(01:05:49):
destroy this place. Oh wow.
You didn't see that one coming? I did not.
I'm stoked. One of my favorite 3rd wave emo
drummers. Their drummer is fucking
ridiculous. That album there was 2 spill
canvas albums that are like notable.
I'm sure they released more but like the two like middle of the

(01:06:10):
pack ones. This album also has self
conclusion is the last song likethe ultimate acoustic scream
along song? If you haven't listened to that
one, I was going to do a self conclusion, but it's one song
and I think it's about Jesus. Not that there's anything wrong
with that. I don't want to.
I don't want to. I don't want to rain on
anybody's Jesus parade, but I think they would.
They leaned a little Christian rock, I think.

(01:06:32):
But Staple Gun is the song that I'm picking and I think that
this is probably their most played song.
Is it? I should look that up.
Nope. Not even close.
There's a song called All Over You.
Oh yeah, that one was in like the hills or some shit.
Or. Five There's 567 songs with more
plays than this one. Jeez, bad job to me.
And they're another one of thosebands that's not the spill

(01:06:53):
canvas. It's, oh, wait, they are the
spill canvas. Spill canvas, Yeah, but.
Yeah, but what's the most playedcity done?
Oh, let me tell you, hold on, did you already check most?
You know what it is. You already know what it is.
Something. Tells me it's probably Chicago,
IL. It's Chicago.
God, we're so fucking good at listening to music here.
We do a great job of listening to music.
This is one of those bands that like, I'm actually really stoked

(01:07:15):
you picked them because it's like, like, I agree, this is
totally 3rd wave emo, but like, yeah, I hear so much second wave
influence. Like I feel like they just came
up after that, that group of like the Get up kids and stuff,
and they just kind of kept doingthat similar thing, but it's a
little more polished and a little more like could have been
on the radio, could have been, you know, but it's still very

(01:07:37):
much e-mail. Like, they're just talented.
I like his voice too. I've always liked his voice.
Great fucking band. Great band.
So I'm live at the Rave in Milwaukee.
Tony, you in Milwaukee now? Are you still where you?
At still in Pleasant. Prairie.
OK cool. Do you still look to the rave
for shows? Yeah, I do, yeah.
God, such a Have you ever been to that venue, Rod the Rave?
In I have not. Is it the rave or is it the

(01:07:58):
Eagles ballroom that has the slanted floor?
Well, I don't know. I don't really notice I've ever
seen one that has or noticed that it's slanted.
OK, so one or the other, the floor slants towards the stage,
so if you're standing in back, you have as good of a view as if
you're standing in the front. Which is.
I don't know why every fucking music venue has not figured this

(01:08:19):
out. Yet I know, dude.
I know it's. Like the most basic of
engineering. I didn't even fucking pass
geometry, but I can tell you that if you slant the floor you
can see in the back and the front.
I mean, it's, it's funny becauseit's true.
It's true. It's it's either the Rave or the

(01:08:40):
Eagles Ballroom. I don't know which Milwaukee
venue it is. I know that they're attached,
but I saw them there. They opened for Saves a Day and
they were fucking fantastic. This band's great.
Puts it over to me, huh? Yeah, puts it over to you.
Second and last pick Ron and 3rd.
Yeah, I'm going to go. This is always on my list
because I I, there's not going to be a better opportunity on

(01:09:02):
this podcast for me to bring this band up.
But Don, you know how you know how much I love this band?
This off one of my top five favorite albums of all time.
But no, it's not fucking Beck. Got it.
Just making sure. Just making sure you didn't find
some way to convince me that Beck is third wave Nemo.
Although, no, I just kidding. No dude.
Hey, Mercedes, Chicago. Benz Oh yeah, good call.

(01:09:25):
Boy destroyers. All I know it's never gonna go
Safeway home. All I know, never gonna go
Safeway home. Just great example of third wave

(01:09:52):
emo because especially because they were basically a second
wave emo band, They were Braid. I mean this is Braid squarely
second wave emo. Kick out a member, decide you
want to Polish your sound up. They became a little more power
pop, but still emo. It got a lot more like
straightforward poppy emo rock shit, but they saw the pretty
emo sound singer and boom there you go, third wave emo band and

(01:10:15):
loses control. Is.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite records, bar none.
Any bad all time in the world, top five all time for me.
I listened to the whole thing today.
I was I was listening to random playlists and picking out and
being like, Oh yeah, that Bailey, listen to that song for
this soon as I put a Hey Mercedes song on, I had to
listen to this entire record front to back.

(01:10:35):
I could not help it. Let me tell you something, I
don't disagree with your call. I think hey, Mercedes belongs on
the mix tape, but you're leaninga little Jason with obscurity
there. I I can't argue that because
they like their first track doeshave a 1.8 million listens but

(01:10:57):
their average monthly listeners they sit at 20,000.
They haven't been a I get it, man, but they haven't been a
band since 2004 like that that that came out.
Four people that. EP that came out in 2008.
They were already broken up for that.
So they haven't been a band in 20 years, man like.
I get it like. I think they just we'll see the.
Plan on shows like Chicago, Yeah, because, well, they

(01:11:20):
reunited for that Best Friends Forever fest in Vegas, which
either which is happening in October, which I can't go to
unfortunately, but be because they reunited for that they just
announced some other shows. So they're playing in Chicago
sometime early next year I think.
So you better believe I'll probably be coming out for that,
Don. Which fucking member of Hey
Mercedes contributed to the LastPost Malone album?

(01:11:44):
He has a song called a Mercedes. Is that what it is?
Yeah, there's no way they've contributed.
Well, there's one of the dudes is a songwriter, but I don't
think he would have Bob Nana, but so Bob Nana's a songwriter.
I don't think he's contributed to Post Malone at.
All I don't know. He's got some solo records and
stuff, but. Post Malone has a song called a
Mercedes. Yeah, it's on his F1 trillion

(01:12:05):
record. I will.
I will give you that this is a this is pretty obscure in the
grand scheme of things. However, yeah, in my in my
defense, Braid was huge, hugely influential.
Braid was huge and big time nerds.
Big time nerds, big time emo nerds.
This was their third wave emo version.

(01:12:26):
I think this band should have been bigger than they were.
And there was another thing I was going to say about that.
And I they were on Vagrant. They were part of that whole
Vagrant so Vimo band. So you can't not be somewhat
influential. Yeah.
So they were on all that Vagrantstuff and all those tours.
So, OK, I'll let you have it. If you want, you can call all
500 and 5040 whatever people, 574 people in Chicago and

(01:12:49):
they'll come to the show with you.
Well. I maybe I will.
You should. All guys will.
All of you guys can be friends together.
Tony knocked this bitch out of the park for us with your fourth
track. Hit a Grand Slam for us.
Give us something good. All right, I got.
You sound stressed. Are you stressed about it?
Well, I have a pretty big list, but I also had, if we're talking

(01:13:10):
obscure, I have some that have like less than 1000 monthly
listeners that are like my favorite songs of all time.
So I'll leave those ones on the on the list on the paper here in
front of me. See those for honorable
mentions. OK, fair.
All right, let's do. Let's do.
Story of the year. Until the day I die.
Until. The day I die.

(01:13:50):
Yep, that makes sense. Yeah, that man, that if that
should be the closure of the mixtape.
Probably. See, My Closer is one of those
super obscure bands that no one's ever going to hear of
before, but for me, Story of theYear.
Besides that obscure band, I've seen Story of the Year live

(01:14:10):
probably upwards of 60 times in my life.
Holy shit that's so many times. Damn.
Yeah, I mean, they're from SaintLouis, so I saw them pretty much
every show that I went to. Story of the Year played like I
was going to their shows before Page Ave. like came out.

(01:14:30):
So they were everywhere, like once a week they played a show.
So I saw them so many times. But yeah, this that song and
that album for me just because being from Saint Louis like
that, that is like hometown heroes for me.
They are emo music, I guess to me, again, just all of these
bands mean so much to me. Like I, it's, it's so weird to
think about. But yeah, until the day I die,

(01:14:52):
that is. Like every person that knows emo
music knows that song. This is this is like, yeah, like
I realize that's what we're doing is the mixtape, but this
is a draft. And there's personal opinion.
If you really were to put together like a comp of like the
essential 3rd wave emo songs, like the whole everybody were to
vote, like this would end up on that list.
Like this would be one of those top like this is I feel like

(01:15:15):
everybody could agree on. This all of Tony's songs would
be on the the have to have. Well, at the very least, all of
Tony's bands for sure like that he's picked.
Oh yeah, Taking Back Sunday story so far, The used.
To use Thrice and Story of the Year, Yeah, Tony is like the
Mount Rushmore of third wave. Emo fucking name.
We got the hey, you know what? We got the right guess for the

(01:15:36):
theme. That's such a good riff.
Yeah, it's a great riff. It's a great song.
It's got that. It's got that those great third
wave emo lyrics too, like the overly dramatic and the best
way, like, you know, you always got to bring death into it,
always got to bring in like something until I die or I die
for you or I'd like, I love it. I love the overly dramatic shit.

(01:16:01):
Also another John Feldman produced record.
Oh yeah, yeah. God.
He could do anything. Are they vegan?
They were while they recorded, I'll tell you that.
Yeah, they were. The vocalist and the bass player
both had straight edge tattoos and then the vocalist also

(01:16:21):
started a party band called The Fuck Off and Dies where he just
pounds beers on stage so he's not straight edge anymore.
OK. Fair enough.
I don't think John Feldman straight edge, but did you know
he's so like militantly vegan? Like if you record with him, you
can't, you have to be vegan while you're recording with him.
Like a full of his. So are you still a vegan?
Yeah, vegan straight edge. Vegan straight edge.

(01:16:44):
Yeah. So fucking still doing it.
Good for you. Yeah, I didn't.
That's kind of weird to that youcan't have cream in your coffee
if you recorded John Felt Friedman.
That's like. You cannot do.
The The Smiths cancer meet during their set.
Oh yeah, they're playing some shows with since it's Fail and
Armor for Sleep. You want to talk about a third

(01:17:04):
wave emo to her right there do. You want to talk about what is
one of my honorable mentions, because now I'm not going to
pick them to put them on. Why?
I just had a touring with Picket.
That's a good segment. That would have been one of my
songs and and honestly, I don't know if that would have been my
next song, but it's wait. Which one since this failure
armor for sleep? Armor for sleep.

(01:17:25):
Is it water? No, it's true to make believe.
Oh car. Underwater is great though.
Car. Underwater is great.
If you had to guess the city that listened to the most story
of the year, who would you say it would be?
Is it United States only? No, no, it could be any state or
country. I'm probably going to say Saint

(01:17:46):
Louis, but maybe somewhere in Japan.
Is it actually Chicago? I'm getting tired.
This game isn't even fun anymoreDon.
Like it's getting so ridiculous.Fucking game.
I don't what is the that should be a Patreon side thing we do is
is the first person is like justname a band and the first person

(01:18:06):
to find a band that doesn't haveChicago in their top five.
What's crazy is that number one is Chicago, Sydney, Australia,
Melbourne, Australia and Brisbane Australia.
Brisbane are Brisbane are in their top five and then Denver
for the Story Story of the year. But my next pick is going to be
Dashboard and my son is going tobe the brilliant Dance All Your

(01:18:32):
Lovers. Close and front the letters
lover robot it doesn't make. It any.
Better doesn't make it any. I think I was.

(01:18:56):
Hoping somebody would pick dashboard.
Dashboard is how many people canwe put?
I mean, we can only put 4 on Mount Rushmore, right?
We can make our own How many youwant 6.
Would we sacrifice? Who are we?
Who are we putting on the 3rd wave?
Emo. Mount Rushmore.
Bert McCracken. I agree, Tony's got that one.
All, all, all, concede and say Gerard Way.

(01:19:18):
I agree. Chris Carrabba.
I agree. And then can can Jesse Lacy and
Adam Lazara be like head buttingeach other?
Maybe Tony do somebody else. Crazy to say.
Crazy to say great fucking I didn't even.
I don't even have Paramore on mylist which is even crazier.
They're they're on my long list.I just, we've talked about them

(01:19:40):
before so I didn't want to do it, but they were on my long
list. I was going to say Patrick
Stump. I follow up.
We haven't talked about either. Yeah, man.
You might be right. Do you remember did you get into
dashboard on that first record the the pre banned record?
Yes, yes I did. The drive through one, yeah,

(01:20:01):
yeah, that's same. I loved that record so much.
Yes, Swiss Army romance was the first one.
Yes, Swiss army romance with thelike but the like abandoned bus
steering wheel cover. That album is fantastic.
Like, it's some of the same songs from the places you have
come to fear the most, but like.Screaming Infidelities would
have been the obvious one, whichis still a great song.

(01:20:24):
I would not pick that one, but the brilliant dance that is the
opener of the places that you come in for the most in my
opinion is like the best of of his work.
Even with screaming infidelities, I prefer the solo
1 better than the band 1. Yes, for sure this.
Oh yeah, brilliant dance. This is great, dude.
This is fantastic song. Yeah, the brilliant dance.

(01:20:46):
But you're right, I prefer the all acoustic screaming
infidelities versus the full band screaming infidelities.
And I'll have you know #1 most listened to city, not Chicago.
Oh, we're #3 we're #3 it's the Philippines.
It's the Philippines. Chicago's third, though it's top
five top. Five, yeah, but he would

(01:21:08):
definitely be on the mount. Chris Carrabba's Mount Rushmore
3rd wave e-mail. I don't know if this is
controversial but I just prefer Chris solo songs to like I mean
Chris was dashboard and I guess is dashboard but I actually
prefer the solo stuff that doesn't have the full band like
this song. Like this is just an acoustic
Chris song. He these are my favorite.
He has such a cool voice. It pairs so well with the way he

(01:21:31):
plays guitar and he sounds greatwith the band and they've got
some great songs as a full band. But God, I love him just by
himself, with a. Guitar.
Such cool tuning. And the way he plays.
Tune a guitar wackier than the rest.
He plays it different. He doesn't play it like a folksy
guy or a singer-songwriter, though.
He plays it like a punk playing a love song.

(01:21:53):
You know, like he. I just dig it, man.
I wish he had more quite. I wish he did more of that than
the full band. And what a hunk.
I just I've been reading the I actually just finished the Andy
Greenwald emo book. Don you know that one The Who
remembers the talk? Nothing feels good.
It's called nothing feels good. Well, it's an interesting book
because it's about the emo movement.

(01:22:14):
But he wrote it and it came out in like 2003.
So like none like this had just started 3rd wave emo just
started. Nobody called it third wave emo
yet. So he has whole chapters where
he's on tour with Jimmy world. He does spend a whole day in New
Jersey with Jeff Rickley from Thursday and just talked to him
about the band. But the main the the one through

(01:22:35):
line of the book is this whole Dashboard Confessional story
where he interviews fans over like instant messenger.
And then he goes and meet some of the fans at shows and he
interviews Chris Carabba and there's this crazy, crazy fandom
around Dashboard in 2003 that just like, I don't know, it just
or I guess he probably would have probably would have been

(01:22:56):
2002 when he was writing it. So.
And Reed, it just brought me back to like he was on the cover
of magazines and shit. Like he was on like Rolling
Stone, I think. And I remember his AP cover.
Yeah. Enormous.
Dude, and like I, you just forget sometimes that there were
there was a time where it actually felt like emo was going
to become like mainstream rock and not not that it didn't, it

(01:23:17):
did to an extent. Like you got your My Kim's and
your Fallout boys. So they're definitely bands made
it through. But there was a time where it
felt like, oh, this is the next thing that's going to be on like
your local alt radio station. It was.
You don't think it was? For for like a minute.
It was for like a minute. And then it got, I don't know,
it just kind of died away, except for the Die Hards and
those few bands that made it huge.
Yeah, it did. It become, it became derogatory

(01:23:40):
to say, emo. There were bands that didn't so
Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Panic, Like My Kim, like, there were
certainly bands that made it outinto the stratosphere.
But. The rest of it like it didn't
become, it wasn't like grunge orlike the alt movement, like it
didn't come out like it stayed mostly in the underground and
had its. Whoopie bear and tight jeans

(01:24:02):
became the joke of the. Genre they they did.
They did. And we also were, you know,
working at the mall and stuff. Like we were even at the
epicenter of it. So it probably even felt bigger
than it really was in the rest of the world.
To us. But.
Yeah. Great pick though.
Yeah, it's my last one, Roderick, your very last choice.
I know. And I feel like this one's even

(01:24:23):
too obscure, like I'm questioning myself now.
I thought this was gonna be likea cool pick, but I had two
steals so. Let's hear what it is, and then
we'll make fun of you for. It I only have 30,000 monthly
listeners too. Shit.
Let's hear what it is and then me and Tony will make fun of you
for it. No, you know what?
I'm gonna go. You was stick to your headings
man. All right, fuck it.

(01:24:44):
I'm gonna go monine. I'm gonna go monine.
Are we really happy with who we are right now?
You said you want him. You said you need him.
What you don't know is I know that you can get.

(01:25:06):
You said you know me. You know nothing at all.
I know. You know, Yeah, I know.
You know Moanine. Yeah, yeah, I know.
Moanine too. OK, great.
You guys know Moanine? I mean, this song's got 1.7
million. Is that good enough?
Yeah, this is a great third wave, this.
Is just it's great third wave emo song too.

(01:25:29):
Like great fucking song, great great emo title, super long
title. I know I'm still writing it.
I learned about this band. Oh and that the reason this was
on my list too. Not not just because it's one
some Canadian representation. Also it's great third wave emo.
But I discovered this band on a comp like I remember discovering

(01:25:50):
bands on comps like I'd pick. Up the Alexis on Fire split that
they did. Yeah, I it was either that, it
might have been that actually. Tony, look at Tony flexing his
little 3rd wave emo muscles. Dude, Alexis on Fire is on my
long list too. What what?
It might have been a label comp though.
Were they on Vagrant too? I don't know.
But anyway, yeah, I discovered them on like a split or a comp.

(01:26:11):
It could have actually, dude, itcould have been a warp tour
comp. Yeah, they were on Vagrant.
That would make sense. It was either it was either a it
was either a year in the streetsor it was a Warp tour comp.
But one of the two, I think that's where I heard of them and
it was the song that I heard andinstantly like great energy,
great like overly aggressive guitar.

(01:26:33):
I think it would have been before that split Tony, because
that split came out in 2005. So I think this came out before
that but. Yeah, I think they were one of
the year on the streets, I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, they were vagrant band too.
Also Canadian. Do you remember those year on
the streets albums were 5 bucks at Hazavik?
Yeah, dude, you get them so cheap that's.
So cool that all. I used to get them for I used to

(01:26:56):
get them for free as spiffs if Ihit my sales goals.
All three, all three of them areon a playlist on Spotify.
All three of the Vagrant, another.
You're on the streets, are they?Yeah.
Is the song on one of them. Yeah.
Hell yeah, I think that's where it was.
Don't spell Vagrant wrong, otherwise you get the Vengaboys
if you're. Playing with that Spotify.
You'd be OK. I'm alright with that too.

(01:27:18):
Yeah, I didn't mean to be the obscure guy, but yeah, I had
Thursday, I had the used, I had some of the big hitters on
there. But you know, I feel like we
have a pretty well-rounded 3rd wave emo great playlist here
through some of this. No, there's no women on it.
So maybe a Paramore song would have been good, but we've we've
had them before on mixtapes. I have put quite a bit of

(01:27:39):
Paramore on there. I think I've put Paramore on
more than one mixtape. Did did either of you listen to
this band beyond? Well, it sounds like you listen
to that split, Tony. Did you guys like listen to
their records or did you just know like this song or?
Yeah, I I knew that split and that was about it.
Yeah, I listen from the from thething.

(01:27:59):
OK, I had this record on my pre iPod MP3 player.
I had a not a Zune, I had something different, some crappy
MP3 player and I downloaded thisalbum probably from Limewire,
from some message board. So I had this record.
I remember listening to this whole thing, but just a jam.
Just a jam of a song. Jam of a song.

(01:28:21):
Great, great song. Stuck money minute.
Yeah, Tony, you want to do some throw some honorable mentions
out? Give us some Tony.
Give us some honorable. Mentions.
Just name them. I got.
I got Finch. What it is to burn?
Specifically the drive through compilation version, not the one
that made it to the record. The drive through comp version,

(01:28:43):
it's better, right? It's the better fucking version.
Yeah, so much better. I got underoath a boy brushed
brushed red, which is more metalcore, but I I mean it still came
out in that same time. And then the the Super Obscure 1
is this band called Adair and they finished their set with a

(01:29:06):
song called the Diamond Ring every single time.
Like I saw, I mean, I've I saw them 100 times.
I literally followed them one summer on Warped Tour just to
see them play. And they've finished their set
every time with the Diamond Ring.
And to me that is like the ending song of an album.
It's super emotional, like greatsongwriting, great lyrics.
But yeah, that's that's the really obscure 1 for me.

(01:29:28):
What's the name of the band Tony?
Adair, Adair, Yeah. Adair.
Yep, I'm excited to look for this up. 537 monthly listeners
Don. That still beats a couple of
Jason's picks. Yeah, I think it does.
I'm excited to listen to this. Yeah, they ended up getting,
yeah, they got signed to Kevin Lyman's record label, who is the

(01:29:52):
one that puts on Warp Tour, and they were pretty popular for a
while. They played Taste of Chaos with
like they used in all of those bands in that era, but they
ended up breaking up in like 2007.
But yeah, that is like the band for me 100%.
But they're super obscure. Hell yeah.
What's their most listened to? City.

(01:30:13):
Did you check? It's got to be Saint Louis.
Has to be it's. Saint Louis, St.
Louis is top three. Yeah, it's top five.
St. Louis beat Chicago by 1
listener. And it's not not many. 14
people. San Antonio, Texas is their
number one city. 23 listeners. Ready to go, boys?

(01:30:34):
Monthly, or this month at least.Yeah.
All right, Don, what do you got?Finch what it is to burn.
OK, you had that too. Fantastic.
Yeah. For sure they were going to be.
If I know that it was, I had to add my chem because when Tony
took the used and I knew I had Finch as an honorable mention, I
wanted to tell the story and going to see him.

(01:30:55):
I did have Armor for Sleep Dreamto Make believe, and then I knew
somebody was going to bring up Taking Back Sunday, so I was
going to bring up Stray Light Run.
Yeah, fantastic record. The song was existentialism on
prom Night, but I didn't. I didn't go with that one, but
it's a great fucking record. It's a good record.
I don't know all the lore but I know like it's an ex member of

(01:31:17):
Taking Back Sunday that got in afight or it's like somebody's
girlfriend with somebody from Taking Next.
No, they just didn't get along. They got a fight or they had a
blowing out and or blowing up inhim and Adam and he dipped and
did straight running with his sister.
Okay, cool, but wasn't the sister dating somebody in taking
next Sunday? That's possible, I don't know.
Probably feels like they all each other.

(01:31:39):
Could be lower. Yeah.
Roderick, what do you have? Rita saw 26.
So much shit. Well, a lot of my shit listed is
second wave stuff that I just felt like was late enough that
maybe I could sneak it into third wave, but I didn't.
All right? So legit 3rd wave I had Barta.
Great call. Cut your ribbon.

(01:32:00):
I had Daphne Loves Derby pollen and salt.
I don't know if you guys ever got into Daphne Loves Derby.
Nope. They were on doghouse with like
All American Rejects and. Sounds.
Obscure. Who else was on that label?
It was like, I think Getup Giz was on that for a while.
It was like a label that got a lot of emo bands started who

(01:32:23):
then went on to do bigger stuff.Northstar.
Do you guys remember Northstar? Nope.
No, very. I couldn't pick them and brand
new because they sound so similar.
But the song the song Pollyanna by North Star and then The

(01:32:46):
Academy Is remember that band? Hell yeah, I remember The
Academy Is. Yeah, so probably attention
Terrible, terrible early 3rd wave emo album cover.
Oh yeah, terrible. The like the first version of
Adobe Illustrator came out and some dude was like, I can draw
some shapes, here you go, I can make a landscape.

(01:33:09):
I feel like The Academy Is is one of those bands that belongs
in the hills. What do you oh like the show the
hills? Sorry I thought you meant like
physically like get away to the hills Academy is get the.
Academy is is like just commercially digestible enough
that Lauren is getting in a fight.
Wait was Lauren LC that Elsie isgetting in a fight with the

(01:33:30):
other hills girl and they're fucking and then the sad Academy
is song is playing? Yeah, can I had one more that I
that I questioned if it was third wave emo or if it was just
indie rock. But do either of you listened?
Did either of you listen to the weaker than's?
No, no, all right, It was the soit's the the one of the IT was

(01:33:55):
the bass player or the guitar player.
It's a do from Propagandi who went and started.
This is his side project. I think he's still on
Propagandi, but it's his side project.
And it's like it's that kind of stuff that's there's debate is
like indie. It's kind of like Bright Eyes or
Desperacito. So these like indie band like

(01:34:15):
Cursive. It's like is it emo or is it
indie rock? Who cares?
Maybe I care apparently, but it's good shit.
But Plea from a Cat Named Virtuewas a great fucking song from
the weaker than 2003. It's a little power pop.
Maybe it's maybe it is indie rock.
I don't know. You dig them, Don?
I'm surprised you haven't heard them before.

(01:34:37):
I'll dip, I'll dip my toe in this pool.
I'll give this 1A whirl. A lot of albums.
Jesus Christ. Oh, they've been around for a
long time. Like start in the 90s.
Yeah, Yep. Damn.
OK. You want to you want to RIP off
the list there, Don? I got it, I'm ready to go and I
already sent to Tony so you can start with the sequencing Taking
Back Sunday cute without the E Thursday understanding in the

(01:34:59):
car crash brand new sick transitGloria glory fades.
They used bury myself alive My Chemical Romance head first for
Halos the Juliana theory. If I told you this was killing
me, would you stop? Thrice Paper tigers.
The spill canvas staple gun. Hey, Mercedes.
Boy destroyer, Boy destroyers. Boy destroyers.

(01:35:20):
Destroyers. Story of the year until the day
I die. Great call Tony.
Dashboard Confessional This brilliant dance moaning.
Are we really happy with who we are right now?
Yeah. Jesus, we hit the most letters.
Well, it's actually a surprisinglack of super out there, I guess

(01:35:42):
understanding car crash cute without a knee cut from this
there, I guess quite a few. I mean that's a that's a
hallmark of a good emo song though, right?
It's like a. Wacky out title.
A knock. Title voice runs the gamut on.
Sometimes a movie quote, sometimes something has nothing
to do with the song itself. Who knows?

(01:36:06):
How to? Make a mix tape.
Tony, I would start to talk there with you.
Thanks. For having me, I had fun.
I I'm stoked on the. When's your next?
Yeah, you have to sequence them,so put them in the order that
makes sense for it to be a mix tape.
When's your next event, Tony? This weekend I have 5 weekends

(01:36:30):
in a row starting this Saturday.Where's the Saturday at?
This one is at Bradley University in Peoria.
It's in there, the gym where thebasketball team plays.
Actually, this won't come out for a week.
So where is the first weekend ofOctober's at?

(01:36:53):
This. That one is in Columbia, MO at
Mizzou. If you're in Columbia, MO, in
Mizzou, go visit Tony at the Missouri Vintage Fest.
Missouri. Yep.
Missouri Vintage Fest? Hell yeah and buy cool Third
Review MO T-shirts. There you go there.

(01:37:14):
You go. Yeah, if you, if you happen to
see any, you know, moanine T-shirts or hey, Mercedes
T-shirts pop up anywhere ever, Tony, Which you won't, but well,
maybe around Chicago, that's possible.
I'm in Chicago. I might.
I love when like I find. I feel like Tony would.
I find those things, yeah, I find them.

(01:37:35):
And I'm like the most excited and geeked about them.
And then everyone around me is like, I what are you excited
about? It's not a Chicago Bulls.
Sure, we don't care about that stuff, but they always think
that they're worth like thousands of dollars because I
like it. You see an old emo?
Sure, you shoot Don an image of it if it's a medium or like a
large man. Your guy.
I'll Venmo you some money for that.

(01:37:58):
Hell yeah. But yeah, Thanks, Tony.
Appreciate it, man. Good time.
Love talking emo? Yeah, All right, dudes.
Well, another great thanks for kicking off Season 5.
We did it our fifth season. We did do it.
We did it all. Right, cool.
Well, until the next time all. Right.
Later, dudes. Thanks guys.
Bye.
