Tonight we celebrate thecontributions of casting
professionals across theater,film and television.

What do you think has been yourcasting moment this season?
What's a moment that sticks outto you from your amazing work
casting this season that youwould like to share?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
A big casting moment was working on Jaja's African
Hair Braiding.
I think Black excellence, blackgirl, joy, black people just
everything that it encompassedwas pretty perfection.
Just everything that itencompassed was pretty
perfection, and just being inthose auditions rooms were so
exciting and so lovely that thatwas the highlight.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Congratulations.
I love that.
Now I know you got a lot to dotonight, but we have a quick
flash round.
It's the 40th Annual ArteosAwards, so we're going to give
you 40 seconds and we're goingto go through some casting
keywords.
It's just like word association.
If a piece of advice comes tomind, just really quick little
snippets.
Do you feel ready?
No Perfect time to do it.

That's what Tara Rubin said to me.
Analyzing breakdowns.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
If it fits, it fits.
If it doesn't, something willcome down the pipeline.
Oh, I love that.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Audition wardrobe.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Look in the world, but I don't need a costume.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Okay, cold reads.
Oh, ding, ding, ding, you didit.
They are terrible, terrible.

I'm so excited for the both ofyou.
Now, looking at this past year,I might know the answer, but
we're trying to get people'scasting moments.
So what is a casting momentthat stood out for both of you
from this past season?

Speaker 3 (03:39):
we'll say Wow, I can't say.
There's just one moment I think.
Uh, the moments are when youhave a director who watches,
somebody who you're, you've beensearching for forever and
you're praying that you've gotit right and they say, yes, we
love them.
That's the casting moment, that's the one we all dream
about.
When we've seen a thousandpeople and and you're hoping,

(04:01):
well, you should have a fewhundred, yeah, totally agree
with that Some cosigning.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yeah, that's like the best moments, like all that
work you find, work with allthese actors to find just the
right person for it, and thendirector season, like that's
exactly who I was thinking of.
They're perfect for it.
Let's do it.
I love that.
I think you're both perfect.
For, before I let you go, thislittle surprise game.
It's called Casting Keywordsand because we're at the 40th

I need to be liked that way.
Actor websites.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Actor websites come in handy, but I think it's
really about the audition.
That's what's important.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Audition etiquette Be polite, be nice, be good in the
room and we'll be the same way.
It's always goes both ways.
I love that Analyzing abreakdown.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
I think a good way to analyze a breakdown is to not
just look at your own character, but try to look at the others.
Just quite often you don't getthe script, and so you don't
have a lot to go on, especiallyif it's a secret project.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Smart.
That's like a detective work.
Oh time, we did it.
That was so great.
Thank you both.
You win my phone.

This is a small town, you know.
People are investigators, allthat stuff.
Do not lie Present as yourselfand try to tailor it to the
special job.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Being yourself in an audition setting.
What's your advice for that?
Because people put it on forthe camera, you know, especially
in reality.

Speaker 13 (20:54):
Okay, being yourself , know yourself and decide if
you should be yourself.
Is it appropriate, is it not so?
Yes, you know, just take alittle temperature and my
favorite term is read the room.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
Read the room.
Well, I'm reading the room andI got to let you go because I'm
clogging this carpet up.
Thank you so much.
I think you're amazing andyou're so much fun.

Speaker 14 (21:14):

The legend and the icon.

Speaker 1 (21:26):

I'm always excited when we can represent at our
office.
We had some nominations, butit's also really great to like
be in a room of like-mindedpeople.

You might be familiar with it,casting keywords.
I played it with you before.
I'm going to say a keyword fromthe process you know so well,
and then you just tell me thefirst piece of advice for actors
that pops into your head.

Speaker 13 (22:08):
Okay, we're going to start the timer.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Oh, I like that.
We can do a little buzzer, alittle, no, but I think that's
more organized.
She's like don't?
Okay, we ready, All rightHeadshots.

Speaker 16 (22:21):
Not as important as you think they are.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Actor websites.

Speaker 16 (22:26):
Important, but as long as you have some presence
on social media and we can findyou easily, not tantamount.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
Making strong choices .

Speaker 3 (22:35):
Always a good idea.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
I love that Social media presence Important, so
that Social media presence.

Speaker 16 (22:40):
Important so that we can find you.
Sometimes we have to educateour teams about who you are.
It's great if you've got greatexamples of your work out there.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
That's a great answer .
Self-tape tip before I let yougo.

Speaker 16 (22:50):
Keep the website and the social media presence
fairly professional.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
Oh, I love that and self-tape tip.

Speaker 16 (22:58):
Self-tape tip.
Don't stress about it.
If we can hear you and we cansee you, that's all that matters
.

Speaker 1 (23:04):
I love that we can see you.
That's a good slogan.
Well, I can see you both.
You look so great and it was sonice to see you have fun
tonight.

Just to celebrate casting as a whole and celebrate
my career so far.
I'm just really excited.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
Okay, I'm excited to play this little game with you
because I've got to keep moving.
So we're going to play castingkeywords.
Basically, I'm going to throw akeyword out from the casting
process and then you just saythe first piece of advice for
actors, performers, that popsinto your head.
All right, you ready, start theclock.
We're not really counting, okay.

Speaker 13 (23:45):
Headshots, Two of them white collar, blue collar.

Speaker 1 (23:48):

Resume.

Speaker 13 (23:51):

Put everything on there, allyour skills and your height.
Social media.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Social media.
Just have fun, but be careful.

Speaker 13 (24:02):

Now I want to keep it moving,so we're going to play a fun
game called Casting Keywords.
Basically, I'm going to throwsome keywords out from the
casting process you know so well, and then you tell me the first
piece of advice for actors thatpops into your head.

Speaker 14 (24:33):
All right.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Okay, you feel good.
All right, let's start.
I think I remember us at thispoint.
Let's start the time on theclock.
There is no clock, uh, andwhenever you're ready, headshots
headshots um clear.

Speaker 9 (24:46):
But I like the ones that are kind of different,
where it's just not the cozyright in the face, kind of thing
.
You know, some attitude or alittle emotion in it okay,
resumes.
You need them.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
Yes, you do, and unfortunately you've got to keep
updating them.
If you're lucky.

Speaker 9 (25:02):
Yeah, I think there's a format that's good to follow.
So many people forget to fitthe different components to it.
Training I want to see training.
Oh, I love that.

Speaker 1 (25:13):
Well, how do you choose your best training,
choosing your craft?
Do you have advice for that?

Speaker 9 (25:18):
I think you just you need to probably visit all of
them and see what resonates withyou, because I think they're
all good but it's individual.
It's almost like I hate to sayit going to a gynecologist you
got to find the one Glad yousaid it or a psychiatrist,
finding the one that fits you.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
Yeah, I love that.
That's personal.
Well, I got to let you go, butthank you so much.
It was so nice to meet you.

Speaker 17 (25:40):

Marion Doherty New York AppleAward, and I'm also up for a
Best Casting Award as well.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Congratulations.
If I could have you cheat out alittle bit, of course.
Bit Speaking of cheating out, what is your best piece of
audition advice for actors?
We have a lot of actors thatlisten.
I know you get the question alot, probably, but right now.

Speaker 17 (26:02):
It's a great question.
I would say preparation morethan anything else.
It's prepare more than youthink you have to prepare
because it's your chance to begood and you owe it to yourself
as an actor to do that.
So I would say preparation.
I love that.

Speaker 18 (26:19):
I'm Jinx.

Speaker 9 (26:19):
Monsoon and I'm excited to be here because I
worked my whole life to be onBroadway and they finally let me
in.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
Talk about celebrating casting.
You've been someone who's justcome in and shaking everything
up this season in the very bestway.
As we're here to celebratecasting directors, I would love
to play a very quick castinggame with you, called Casting
Keywords, sure, so I'm going tothrow some casting keywords at
you and then you give us thebest piece of advice you have
for performers out therelistening Okay, good, all right,
cheat sheet Ready, not reallycounting, I don't think

(26:50):
Headshots.

Speaker 18 (26:52):
Oh you know, be approachable, be sexy but
approachable.
Approachable, be sexy butapproachable.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
Approachable, approachable, approachable
sexiness.
I love that.

Speaker 19 (27:03):
Resume Only the stuff that really counts.
Learn when to let go of certainprojects.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Oh, my goodness Bye.

Speaker 19 (27:12):
High school Actor website oh have someone do it
who's good at websites, that's agood tip, and then self-tape
audition tip.

Speaker 18 (27:23):
Oh, approachable, approachable, approachable,
charming, delightful.
You got to show them in a videothat you're someone they want
to work with.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
I love that.
Now do you have any advice foractors out there to be
themselves in an audition, tobring themselves to it Like it's
hard to do that sometimes.

Speaker 18 (27:42):
I like to tell myself this If you're right for
the role, it's going to shinethrough.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
If you're not right for the role, but they love you,
that'll still be somethingsomeday, you know, you never
know what seeds will fertilize.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
Ooh, hopefully it becomes a sunflower.
I love that.
Thank you so much.
It was so nice to meet you.
You're so fun.
Congratulations on everything.

Speaker 4 (28:07):

So we're going to do a littlefun game we played with Tara
which is called Casting Keywords.
So we're going to put some 20seconds on the clock I'm not
counting honestly and then I'mgoing to ask you some.
I'm going to say some keywordsand you say the first piece of
advice for actors that pops intoyour head based on the keyword
keyword.
Okay, ready you ready.
All right headshots, amazingresume resumes, clean and

(28:41):

yourself, you ever see.
Just friends, ryan reynoldssorry, I'm lagging out.
Uh, choosing, choosing yourbest we're blocking out together
.

Speaker 4 (28:54):
Choosing your best takes um trust yourself, and
it's usually the first onethat's so good.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
Best audition advice in general Be yourself as well.
Be yourself.

Speaker 1 (29:20):

So we'll keep things quick.
Tonight we're playing a littlesurprise game to advice for
actors that pops into your head.
Good idea?
Oh, thank you, okay, sobreakdown Good thing to study.

Speaker 10 (29:33):

what to prepare.

Speaker 1 (29:36):

Speaker 10 (29:37):
Headshots.
Make sure they're in focus.
They show you as you are andhow you will come into the room.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Audition etiquette coming into the room.

Speaker 10 (29:46):
Be friendly.
Do the best work you could do,don't worry.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Speaking of not worrying self-tape tip, Do you
got any advice there?

Speaker 10 (29:54):
Oh, this is so hard, but I think, keeping it simple
there too, make sure it soundssilly, but really make sure
you're well lit and that yoursound is well balanced.
And it doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to be useful.
Oh, I love that.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
And finally I'll just say choosing your best take.
We could spiral there a littlebit as actor.

Speaker 10 (30:10):
You can spiral there .
Usually, I find the first onetends to be the most successful.
Do no more than three and giveyourself a little air to breathe
.
It's never going to be perfect, but it's going to be good
enough to feel good aboutsending it out.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
I love that Well, you're making me feel good just
seeing you.
Thank you so much.
I hope you have fun.
See you soon.
Lots of love to you.

Speaker 15 (30:29):
My name is Mauko Kwaji and I'm from Ghana, west
Africa.
I've been nominated for twocategories and I'm excited to be
here.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Congratulations, I'm so excited you're here.
So, in honor of castingprofessionals everywhere,
tonight we're playing a funlittle game called Casting
Keywords.
So I'm going to it's kind oflike word association I'm going
to throw a casting keyword outthere that you'll know and then
you just say the first piece ofadvice for actors, auditioners
in general.
Okay, you ready, we're going toput 20 seconds on the clock

(30:56):
Headshots.

Speaker 15 (30:58):
My advice to actors on there is that it's very
important and it should beupdated periodically.
Resume it needs to be updatedconstantly so that we know your
last work.
Self-tapes Make sure your soundis good and your lighting is
correct.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
Oh, that's very good, analyzing a breakdown as an
actor.

Speaker 15 (31:19):
If you don't fit, don't submit.

Speaker 1 (31:21):
Oh Wait, that's like a rhyme If you don't fit, don't
submit.
You say that a lot.
I love that you put that on abumper sticker.
It just jumped up my head itjust on top of my head.
That's really good.
You should honestly coin thattrademark it, or I'll take it
and then your your best piece ofaudition advice for actors in
general.

Speaker 15 (31:39):
Um just go in audition and forget about it oh,
I love that too well.

Speaker 1 (31:42):
Thank you so much.
Don't forget about me, friend.
Now have fun tonight.
So nice to meet you helloeverybody.

Speaker 18 (31:48):
This is asia luke here on the ones and twos.
I am a reality TV castingdirector and casting producer
and I'm being nominated for theGreat Christmas Light Fight.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Congratulations.
I had so much fun with yourfriend earlier that was up here.
Yeah, yes, what a good time.
It must be so much fun to worktogether.
It is One thing I was curiousabout in regards to reality
casting is that you're lookingfor people to bring their
authentic selves a little bit ofsparkle for the camera, maybe.
What's your advice for peopleout there auditioning for
reality shows on beingthemselves on camera and not

(32:22):
like putting on something extra?

Speaker 18 (32:24):
Right?
Well, the number one thing is alot of people don't understand
how to pull their storiestogether.
You know, like when we talk topeople, they'll be like, oh,
it's nothing interesting in mylife, and then it's like next,
you already talked yourself outof the whole situation.
Really take the time to reallyunderstand what makes you unique
, um, your hobbies, the thingsthat make you stand out and be

(32:48):
yourself.
Like everybody has a story.
This tell the story.
Take time to really flesh outall of your life experiences.
You know anywhere from, likehow your family is set up, where
you grew up.
Was it a rural place, Was it acity?
Did you go to Ivy League?
Did you play sports?
Like, do you collect anythinginteresting?
Do you collect anythinginteresting?

(33:09):
Like, there's so many thingsyou know that you can work on to
really flesh out that story.
That's the most important thingand just be yourself,
absolutely that's such greatlife advice in general.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
So everybody rewind that I'm gonna go open a journal
a fresh one and write all thosequestions down and the answers
maybe hi jordan carlos by the 10, based in brooklyn, new york,
where all of us run survive.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
I'm excited to be here for some hosting this thing
, and this is my first time here, so it's just a lot of
different emotions running atonce and they're all positive.

Speaker 9 (33:39):
Hi, my name is Alina.
I'm Jordan's wife and I'mexcited to be here to support
him.

Speaker 1 (33:44):
PhD.
We've got to get that on therecord.
I'm going to throw out somekeywords from the casting
process and the whole goal is toget some tangible advice for
actors listening, but we'regoing to give you like 20
seconds to do it.
I'm not really keeping track.
I'm here for you, I'm here tohelp.
I love this.
Okay, so whenever we're ready, clock started, here we go
Headshots.

Speaker 4 (34:03):
Headshots.
Okay, so headshots are 8x10s or8x11 glossies.
That are the casting director.
They should be appropriate toyour age.
That is the hope.
Some pens are not Shoot.
She was there when I got myfirst set of headshots.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
Oh, I love that, but what about when you saw his
first clips like a reel, anactor's reel?
Do you have any advice on that?

Speaker 9 (34:24):
Oh my gosh, I don't know, I'll keep it on you.

Speaker 4 (34:28):
I'll keep on Nurse Jackie once in 2009.
It was like man.
I was so booked and busy, veryblessed, and I was so nervous I
couldn't even watch myself on TV.
I remember this so well.
So, yes, this one has been withme, even though I couldn't
handle my first time on TV.
I love that.
Okay, best self-tape tip.
Best self-tape tip Go to Elliotin the Navy Yards.

(34:51):
He's amazing.
Brooklyn Self-Tape Actor'sStudio.
You see how nervous I am to sayit, because I'm so excited to
tell you Leave it to aprofessional if we can afford it
.

Speaker 3 (35:01):
That's really great advice, because then we spiral
it always comes back from therejust saying I love this guy so
much and I'm like it's like agood experience, that's a
healthy experience.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
It keeps you too healthy, as I that's a healthy
experience keeps you too healthy, as I was going to say.
Is this your built in reader?
Because I know with my wifeit's not always the best vibe,
but I'm like please help me doit again.

Speaker 11 (35:19):
I've broken her on the wheel, and so now he has
somebody to do that.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
I have outsourced it.
She's done her time.
She's done her time and it'slike you just have to go to the
industry professionals.
You know she's amazing and withto theater school like herself.
But I go to professionals sothey can hear me whine Amazing.

Speaker 1 (35:41):
Oh yeah, there we go.
The last question I'll say iswhat do you think makes a great
host?
I need some advice.

Speaker 4 (35:46):
He's the great host.
No you're a very good host.
You're asking follow upquestions.
You're interested?
Don't even worry about it.
Don't even worry about it, justlike.
I think a good host is justsomeone that's like the most
comfortable person in the world.
If they're, they're trying tobe the pace car for the comfort
level.
So that's at least my motonight is just be super

(36:08):
comfortable, super cash andthat's it.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
I love that.
Well, you're gonna kill it.
I can't wait to see you shine, and it was so nice to meet you
both congratulations thank you,I'm kaisha heebly.

Speaker 19 (36:18):
I'm so excited to be here tonight because casting is
one of the mostunderrepresented talked about
parts of the industry and theydo some of the most important
work okay, and I'm so tempted tohold your nail.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
Wicked style, these nails are sick, hold space.
We're holding space right now.
I gotta say can you please justshout out your handle.
You're the most amazing creator, performer, extraordinaire.
Tell the people at home wherethey can find your content.

Speaker 19 (36:44):
Yeah, you can find me at Kaisha Creates.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
Yes and it's so good you won't be sorry.
One thing I'm wondering for youis you've like, truly, I so
admire how you create your owncontent and you don't wait for a
yes, yeah, what's your adviceto actors on doing that?

Speaker 19 (36:56):
I kind of like taking their power back yeah,
you know, I think the thing thatis really important for artists
is to constantly be creatingand not limiting that creation
to only when you get past insomething.
Creation can be happening allthe time, whether it be on the
internet or off.
So I think about that, likewhat can I be making?
How can I pour into myself asan artist that has nothing to do

(37:17):
and is not connected to a jobthat I've booked?

Speaker 1 (37:20):
Oh, I love that.
I'm going to write that downand tattoo it to my face.
Okay, so really quick.
It's getting quiet.
I think the show's about tostart.
We're going to play a surprisegame.
It's called casting keywords.
Basically, I'm going to throwout some keywords you'll know
from the audition process andyou say the first piece of
advice for actors that pops intoyour head.

Speaker 13 (37:36):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
So whenever you're ready, you good.
All right, headshots Be you.
Resume Be honest Actor real.

Speaker 19 (37:47):
Showcase your talent honestly.
Ooh, self-taping, don't do itmore than three times.
Choosing your best tape.
Don't think too hard about it.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
Ooh, that's really good Dressing the part for an
audition.

Speaker 19 (38:01):
Dress how you would dress in real life.

Speaker 11 (38:03):
Ooh, I love that.
Finally, audition etiquette.

Speaker 19 (38:11):
Mm, listen.
I want to say more but, like, listen, pay attention to read
the room and pay attention towhat is happening.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
I love that.
That's good life advice ingeneral.
Thank you so much, Ren.
