Proverbs 4:7 tells us,
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."
Then Jesus says in Matthew 11:15,
"He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
Now wait a minute.
Jesus wasn't talking to deaf people.
He was talking to people whose ears worked just fine... but whose understanding didn't.
There is a difference between hearing words and understanding meaning.
