Now, some of you may be a little too sanctified for what you are about to hear.  I began to reflect on the mindset of our culture today, where songs are often about materialism, shine, and bling. Unfortunately, we don’t hear many songs, including gospel songs, that exalt the truth that no material item can satisfy us beyond the flesh or that looking down on another because you’re up should not be satisfying.

This morning, I want to discuss the illusion of independence. Independence is defined as freedom from outside control or support. The word independence was never recorded in the Bible because its very premise goes against the order of what God has established.  From inception, God designed every living thing to rely on something else to sustain its own existence. Independence is not part of God's plan.

Now I thought this message was just for the younger ladies… you know, the ones still figuring out how to block him and bless him at the same time. 

But the Holy Spirit tapped me on the shoulder like, “Uh-uh. This is for all the ladies—crowned, uncrowned, seasoned, married, single, divorced, dating, done, and delivered.”

Because there’s a woman we hardly ever talk about.

If we’re being honest, some of us have been held hostage by our “I need” lists for so long, we’ve forgotten what a real need even looks like.

We say:

• “I need this job or I don’t know how I am going to make it.”
  
  
  
• “I need a man or I’m going to die single.”
  
  
  
• “I need a woman or I’m going to lose my mind.”
  
  
  

No, beloved… You want that job.
You desire that relationship.

The God of the ages is God Almighty, the transcendent, consistent, sinless, flawless God, the only God worthy of worship or our submission.  

Satan is the god, lowercase g o d of this age.  See, ungodly gods do not transcend time; they are not consistent; they tend to take what was meant to bless, and pollute it, defile it.

We don’t like to forgive because we feel like we are letting the person off the hook for their actions, words, or attitude.

"I was nice to this person," "I was there for this person."  Betrayal runs deep and makes us feel justified in imprisoning this person in our cage of unforgiveness. The problem with holding hostages, keeping someone caged, is that we become prisoners ourselves.
