Speaker 1 (00:00):
My Peninsula coming up, run Cleve Run and a favorite
race day to push on despite a major hiccup. Hi,
I'm Jackie Lynn with iHeart Air Peninsula, your weekly local
news wrap for the Air Peninsula and surrounds. But first,
the Hello SA crew has been in Burrough this week.
Haley Pearson and the team have been busy visiting all

(00:21):
the best tourism spots around town to film a segment
for the show. The visit is part of the prize
package associated with winning the twenty twenty four Tiny Tourism
Town Award. I spoke to host Haley earlier this week.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
So beautiful. We had to come here. These guys, I
don't know if you know, but all of South Australia
should know this. But they won two massive awards this
year for the Tiny Tourism Town Award and the People's
Choice Awards at the Halosa Top Tourism Town Awards. Is
a tongue twister, but this means that Burrough is now
on the map for all of Australia to come and

(00:55):
enjoy it. And it really is like I had only
really been to Claire and I popped into Borrow from
time to time, but I didn't realize how amazing this
place is and how much history is here. So we've
come here. I've actually done something really fun this morning.
They've got a new e bike experience where you get
this thing called the Borough Heritage Passport, which gives you

(01:17):
this key. This sounds like a joke, but it's so cool.
You get this key and you get into eleven lot
places around the town, so you can go to the jail,
you can go to the mines, you go to this
place called the Uricorn Unicorn Brewery, and you get to
learn about all this stuff that you wouldn't know otherwise. Yeah,
it's actually a really great and I just said this morning,

(01:38):
it's a buzzing town. There's so many people here today. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Yeah, And its funny you mentioned that as well, because
just earlier this week we were talking about the fact
that the Borough Passport actually has won a tourism award
or has been nominated for one, rather in itself in
its own right. So, yeah, a really amazing thing, and.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
So it should.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I've done it twice. So yesterday I did it by
driving around to all the places, and today I did
it on an e bike, which I'm going to say
that e byte was so fun and you don't obviously
the kids would love this. Like, you go to these
places and there's something exciting about using the key, which
is your passport to get into these places, and you
know that the only people that can get inside this

(02:16):
is if you have a passport, which is only thirty dollars.
All the money goes back into the region and making
sure the upkeeper things and it's amazing.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Yeah, yeah, what else are you focusing on in Borrow?
What else is on the menu if you like?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Well, yesterday I went to a gorgeous accommodation. There's a
a lot of differ accommodations. I'm staying in this old
miners cottage last night Paxton, which is amazing. They're very
I guess they're basic little cottages, but there's a lot
of history there, so some of it because because there
is a lot of history, you go inside these places
and there's almost a little eerie feeling because I don't know,

(02:54):
you just feel like there's so much history in the walls.
And I just said, actually to the girl that's walking
around with us today, I know this sounds funny, but
it's like you're in Rome because in Rome. You see
Zara and then you see an old you know, ruin
right next to it, and it's the same as here.
You see these beautiful fashion shops and then across the
road there's really old ruins. It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, Bura is amazing and it is
you know, they're working to get it on the Heritage
List actually the World Heritage List.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Really exciting for the whole region and everyone who lives there.
Hopefully all these awards and you know that listing is
just going to mean that tourism booms. And of course
you guys being there now, have you had many people
coming up to say hello or anything?

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah? Do you know what's been beautiful?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
There's actually a lot of people that have come from
into state as soon as they heard that it won
a tiny tourism award. They've come from across the country,
so they're making the time to come here as oppose
they may have driven past or gone through Claire a
different way. But there's a lot of interstate people here,
which is really nice. But there's a lot of intrigued
in like what are you filming?

Speaker 3 (03:54):
What is this?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
I was like, well, we've got a TV show. This
episode airs on October twenty, so you'll see a lot
of Barra on our Hellosa episode on October twenty.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Wonderful. That was gonna be my next question, So I'm
glad we got that covered. What about what's not making
it to air? Anything funny been happening over the last
few days. Any outtakes I saw on Instagram the other day,
I believe you and Lauren went for a bike ride
and Lauren rode into a fence anything like.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Okay, So here's the behind the scenes stuff that you
don't see on the show. Lauren was never taught to
ride a bike, so that footage that you saw was
actually a few years ago and she tried to ride
as she went straight into a wall. So I put
my hand up for all the riding segments. So I'm
doing the e bikes. Every time there's anything involving a bike,
it's me, not her, because yeah, or she'll stand beside

(04:43):
the bike, but she literally cannot ride a bike and
she's thirty five.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
So it's not like riding a bike.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Then it's not like riding a bike.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
No, it's definitely not. So yeah, you'll never see her
on a bike. But that's why I kind of owned
it this morning, although I think I was going a
little bit too fast on the e bike, but it
was fun. We cut again.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
I've absolutely bit it on an e bike before. You know,
you just you get way too excited.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Ah, you just feel like it's adrenaline rush and I
feel like I'm twelve again.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
So yeah, it's been awesome, wonderful.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Well, I can't wait to see the episode on October
twenty so only a couple of weeks away, and yeah,
have a great rest of your time in Borough.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Thanks lovely.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Two weeks ago, the inaugural Cleve Running Festival was held
and exceeded all expectations, so successful that organizers have locked
it in again for twenty twenty five. Sam Talbot has
more That's.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
Right, Jack. The Cleve Running Festival president Tina Treegez said
she was blown away by the amount of people who
signed up to run five k's, ten k's or the
half marathon.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
It was an outstanding success, blew all of our expectations
out of the water. We were very blessed with phenomenal
weather for the weekend, ridiculously high registrations compared to what
we originally thought we would ever get and the feed
back from participants, community and volunteers was amazing. So yeah,

(06:05):
really could not have asked for a better event.

Speaker 5 (06:08):
Three hundred and seventy runners registered to race on the day,
way more than the expected one hundred and fifty.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
So because we had fantastic weather, we really did have
that community village type vibe happening. At the finish line,
people were rounding around on the graft and I think
the last group of people left at about two o'clock
in the afternoon, which was amazing considering the last runner
came over the line at eleven o'clock.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
Of course, there were local runners, but there were also
interstate runners and a majority of participants coming from the
wider EP as well as other parts of the state.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Everyone that we've spoken to is so pleased to have
been involved and can't wait to be involved again next year.
So even the local businesses have commented on how busy
they were in the lead up and the next day
type thing, as people were still sticking around a little bit, and.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
With it being such a big success, of course the
festival will be back same place, same time next year,
So next year.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
We're going to be running Sunday the twenty eighth of September.
We are just going to stick with the half marathon,
the ten k, and the five k events, as well
as the kids Dash. We're going to hopefully add a
few extra bits and pieces in as we go, but
we really want to focus on getting the event established

(07:28):
before we make it more complicated. But we're really looking
forward to it, and we've already had stacks of people
asking us when registrations are going to be open, but
that won't be until later in the year.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
My Heart Peninsula, My Heart Peninsula.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Former Adelaide crowstar Rory Sloan will delve into his life
and football career at an Air Peninsular event next week.
Sloan will speak at the Port Lincoln Hotel on Thursday,
October ten for a retirement show. After visiting the ep
a few times throughout his career, Sloaney says he's keen
to say thank you to Adelaid Cruz fans and members
for their support. Sam Talbot has more.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
Thanks Jack EP Crouse Supporters Group president Jen Reagan says
Sloane has always endeared himself to fans of all ages.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
We are very privileged to be hosting the Rory Sloane
retirement show.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
Are there a lot of Cruise supporters on the EP
that are part of the group, Jan We've.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Got about two hundred in our supporter group. That's adults
down to children, so fairly family based. But there are
so many more supporters here and all through the West Coast,
you know, up through to Sojuna and cal Woodner, all
up around those farming areas that probably aren't members of
our group because of the distance, but they are steel

(08:52):
true blue Crow supporters.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
He's your favorite player.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Oh that's a hard one. If you're talking about current players.
My all time favorite has to be Taylor Walker. I
have a close relationship with Taylor. I mean he is
the number one ticket holder, but Rory holds a big
part of our hearts as well.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
Sloane, who described Jen as a superstar, played more than
two hundred and fifty games for the Cruise before retiring
earlier this year. But he told us about his very
first game back in two thousand and nine against Towthorne.

Speaker 6 (09:26):
I remember my first step onto the ground actually like
over the line. There was nothing going on at that
point in time in the game, and I stood over.
This huge cheer went up and I had about two
trained up. I was on the train line and I
had about two train carriages of friends and family and
people from the footy club come in and watch me.
And as soon as I still on the ground, this
huge cheer and one of the greatest feelings. Who had

(09:46):
to this state in football?

Speaker 5 (09:47):
Sloone choose to end his career earlier this season because
the risk of losing his eyesight was just too great.

Speaker 6 (09:54):
Twenty one, i'd detached my retina. Going back into twenty sixteen,
I thrashed my eyes. I've also had the pitches in
the eyeball. I've had multiple tears in the retina and
then yeah, I had another detachment in this retina, and
they're not they're not nice. The surgery on THEMS horrendous.
You lie there with your eyepinned open, a few needles
bubble injected in, but basically they find a way to

(10:15):
stick your retina back to your eyeball, which is quite
a torturous process. But once it's done. Yeah, I've been
very lucky to retain most of my eye sight, but
some people aren't quite as lucky. But yeah, for me,
it was I've had so many injuries this one came
out of nowhere and the recommendation, I suppose from the

(10:37):
experts in we're just need a very high risk. I
must be susceptible to them and neither to try and
run that risk to play some more footy. But the
recommendation from them was like you probably should pack up
and take your eyesight and move on with life where
you've still got it. So it's a very very tough decision.
Was a just incredible hard decision I just had to make,

(10:58):
and I'm an indecisive person that it is, and that
one thrown, Yeah, it was. That was tough to work through.
But I've always been one that's enjoyed my whole life
and I've never just been solely swly Rory signing the football.
I enjoy life. I enjoy doing things. I enjoy exploring
the world, especially your part of the world over there
on the air potentially it's one of my favorite spots
in South Australia to go visit.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
Dealing with injuries and dealing with mental health has been
a big Partislean's career and he has this advice for
young footballers.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
Well, I mean, and people go through tough moments and
this is This can apply to whether you're going through
a tough footy moment, an injury, or if you go
on some personal hardship too. For me, you've always got
two choices, right, So I had two choices. I could
have felt sorry for myself and really felt down and
bumded it. I'm like, oh, I don't get to play
and still do my ultimate job and live my dream

(11:47):
out of still being a football and played for a
couple more years. I could have been extremely flat on
that and got really down about it all. The other
option is you go, well, actually, as you mentioned before,
I played for sixteen years. I played a whole lot
of footy, made something aible friends, I've still got my eyesight.
I'm going to look forward to what I've got next.
And for me, when you sound those two decisions out,

(12:07):
or those two choices out, you know which one you're.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
Going to take. The Rory Sloane retirement Show event will
be a deep dive into the person that Sloaney is
and how he handled different events throughout his life.

Speaker 6 (12:19):
Oh, Dearren show is one to say thank you to
the whole community over there, and we've got so many
supporters and fans over there that have supported our footy
club and myself in particular of all these years, so
to say thank you. But then the other part is
like just kid, they run a little more insight they
probably haven't seen across the years to football, and that's
that's something like I mentioned before, there's those little bits

(12:40):
of gold you learned around choices you make in life
and when in the hardship for you, there's stuff that
I've certainly learned through football that I'd love to pass
on and share to the people. And if that helps
a few people out, then yeah, that'd be great.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
Doors will open at seven pm before the show starts
at eight pm next Thursday, October ten e tickets online And.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Finally today, the Jamestown Cup race day is set to
go ahead this Saturday without the horses. Due to insufficient
rainfall making the track unsuitable for running, Racing Essay has
canceled the meat. However, the Jamestown Racing Club is pushing ahead.
Club cham and Philip Divens says the show must go on,
albeit with a bit of a twist.

Speaker 7 (13:20):
The stewards came up the last Wednesday afternoon to inspect
the track four or five weeks ago when they came
up there was enough given the track that still looks
like we're going to hold an event. Of course, we're
expecting rain to follow on from that and subsequently got none,
so the track hasn't come up at all. Low growth
or no growth can like courses running on cement. So

(13:41):
for the safety of the horses and the jockeys of
the stewards decided to cancel the event.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Yeah, so the event will go on though you still
have the you know, live music, the bar, open, the
fashions on the field and you might even get some
bipeds instead of quadrupeds running exactly.

Speaker 7 (13:58):
Yes, No, we normally do it ash for cash late
in the day the stewards have left the course and
let the hunters have a bit of a crack at
doing one hundred meters dash for a bit of cash.
So that's still on. We've got the fashions on the field.
Kicks off at two thirty for the juniors and three
thirty for the seniors. Yes, as you said, we've got
the live music on the day. The club felt we

(14:19):
had an obligation to still hold the event even though
the horses weren't running around. We've been going for one
hundred and forty nine years and it's sort of part
of the October long weekend. It's going to waste exactly
when everybody gland up. So it's we're still asking for
a race day attire.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
Well, it sounds like it's still going to be a
good day, going to be a busy one in Jamestown
with the show on as well, all the best for
it and hopefully still a good day out and lots
of people rock up in their fancy frocks.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
The comment most people have been feeding back to me
has been that races we come out every year, but
we currently remember a horse running around, so hopefully because
they're not here, he's not going to make any difference
to the event. It's really business as usual. Other than
we just don't have any live horse racing. We've got
a big screen TV that'll show the Adelaide and interstate

(15:09):
racers dead. No, we're looking looking forward to a good
day and.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
