MADD Calgary & Area officially launched its holiday awareness campaign, Project Red Ribbon, to promote safe and sober driving during the festive season. The campaign will run from November 1, 2024, to January 6, 2025, highlighting the importance of preventing impaired driving, a critical issue on Calgary’s roads.
The red ribbon, a symbol of MADD Canada, serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving and honors victims who have been killed or injured. Although progress has been made in reducing impaired driving incidents, families continue to lose loved ones and suffer life-altering injuries. Therefore, increased awareness and education are essential.
"Everyone has a role to play in spreading this important message," stated Aaron Libby at the launch event. "Together, we can help prevent impaired driving and keep our communities safe."
MADD Canada chapters distribute red ribbons and car decals to amplify the sober driving message. Canadians are encouraged to display these symbols on vehicles, keychains, or backpacks, reminding one another that driving while impaired is never acceptable.
The official launch of this year’s campaign took place at the AHS Calgary Zone EMS Headquarters, attended by local dignitaries and partners, including Calgary Police Service A/Deputy Chief Joe Brar and representatives from Calgary Transit and KAG Canada.
"Wherever you're celebrating this holiday season, making a sober ride home your first priority is essential," emphasized Libby. "Plan ahead—arrange for a designated driver, take public transit, or stay overnight. It's easy to organize a safe, reliable taxi ride home."
MADD Canada’s red ribbons and car decals are available through MADD Calgary & Area by calling 403-278-8081 or emailing info@maddcalgary.onmicrosoft.com. They can also be obtained at Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits Beer Stores.
