Facial hair growth in women isn't random but a sign of hormone imbalance that should be addressed at its root cause to prevent worsening over time.

• Facial hair often indicates high androgens (testosterone, DHT) which can cause irregular periods, acne, and scalp hair thinning
• Contributing factors include genetics, stress, diet, medications, PCOS, and insulin resistance
• Androgens and insulin resistance create a problematic cycle that reinforces each other
• Balanced meals, strength training, and reduced sugar intake can help break this cycle
• Consider supplements including inositol, zinc, magnesium, and spearmint tea
• Understanding your personal hormone picture is crucial before starting any supplement regimen
• Exercise, stress reduction, and blood sugar regulation are universally beneficial approaches

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now there are a lot of women out there who are just
plucking or waxing their chinhairs without realizing that
facial hair growth is actually asign, a clue about what's going
on with their hormones.
And if you aren't addressingthe root cause and understanding
the root cause, it is likely toget worse over time.
Now, that is why today, I'msharing the top three things

(00:21):
that you should know.
If these annoying chin hairsare knocking your confidence.
Let's dive in.
Welcome to I'm Hormonal, yoursource of information about
women's hormone health and howto support your body.
Naturally, I'm your host,bridget Walton, and I'm a
certified functional hormonespecialist and menstrual cycle
coach.
I am on a mission to hold thesehormone conversations with as

(00:45):
many menstruators as possible, because you deserve easier
access to accurate informationabout what's up with your unruly
menstrual cycle and with yourfertility mysteries.
Don't you think it's time thatwe figure this out once and for
all?
Hey there, friend, welcome totoday's episode of I'm Hormonal.

(01:06):
I'm your host, bridget Walton, and I am so excited to have you
here with me today to be talkingabout chin hairs of all things.
As we get older, we are likelyto have them at some point in
our life, but if you are justthinking, wow, I'm way too young
to be having these thick, likedark chin hairs.

(01:27):
What does this mean?
What can I do about it?
What should I make of this, then you are in the right place.
Also, if you think, well, Iwould kind of love to avoid that
situation.
What can I, what should I knownow?
Then you're still in the rightplace.
I even this morning I wastalking to my mom on the phone
and she says how do you evendecide what to talk about when

(01:50):
you do a podcast episode?
How do you come up with thingsto talk about?
And I said, well, what wouldyou want to hear if you were
listening to a podcast episodeand what would you want to learn
?
And she says, well, you know, Iwould want to learn what I can
do about these damn chin hairsthat keep popping up.
So I said that's the magic, mom, that's, that's the topic.
Then this is how we do it.

(02:10):
So shout out to mom Hi, ifyou're listening.
But also for everybody else whois not my mom, really grateful
to have you listening today, especially if today's your first
time listening.
I hope that this podcast is areally solid resource for you,
helping you to understand what'sgoing on with your body, what's

(02:31):
going on with your cycle, howyou can support better, more
balanced hormones and alsohelping to really reinforce the
fact that you totally can changewhat's going on with your
hormones by making differentshifts in your lifestyle, in
your habits, that are for thebetter.
You just got to know where tostart and really focus on the

(02:52):
root cause of what's going on.
Let's go ahead and dive intothe first of three things I want
you to know, which is thatfacial hair like this isn't
random.
It is a sign of some sort ofhormone imbalance.
Now, that doesn't have to be asuper grave, dire thing, but
regardless, just knowing that, okay, something is a little bit

(03:14):
off balance.
What is off balance and how canyou address that?
Through diet and lifestylechanges.
Now, oftentimes the imbalancewould be high or relatively high
androgens.
Androgens are hormones liketestosterone, or maybe you've
heard of DHT.
They are the I'm doing airquotes over here classically

(03:38):
male hormones, but they'redefinitely essential and
necessary in female bodies too.
However, again, when they arerelatively high or in excess,
that can result in experienceslike facial hair growth, like
irregular periods.
It can look like acne.

(03:59):
It can also certainly impactovulation or cycle regularity.
But coming back to our topicfor today of chin hair growth,
if that's something that you'reexperiencing, then high
androgens like testosterone orDHT is possibly a part of that
picture.
Now, if you're listening andyou're thinking well, what about

(04:22):
with PCOS?
Maybe you have PCOS and youknow that facial hair growth is
common with PCOS then you arespot on, because high, or
relatively high, androgens ischaracteristic of PCOS too.
It's also worth mentioning thatother factors could be your
genetics, could be stress, couldbe your diet, maybe medication

(04:47):
I mentioned PCOS and then alsoinsulin resistance.
These are all factors thatcontribute to what is going on
with your androgens.
I mean, really what's going onwith all of your hormones?
But especially when you'rethinking of how can I get these
androgens back down into a morenormal level, thinking, okay,

(05:08):
let's lower or eliminate stressand stressors, let's eliminate
processed food, high sugar stuff, eliminate, or rather talk to
your doctor about anymedications that could be
contributing to higher levels ofandrogens.
If you have PCOS, thenaddressing the root cause of

(05:29):
that PCOS is going to be a dopeplace for you to start.
And then not a whole lot thatwe can do about genetics, of
course, but there is a whole lotthat you can do about insulin
resistance and understanding howyou can support more stable
blood sugars.
So those are a couple of parts,a couple of stars in this

(05:55):
constellation of high androgens.
I am thinking too I didn'tmention this a second ago, but
sometimes, if you are havingthinner hair on your scalp too,
that could be a signal of higher, relatively high androgens.
So it is this additional hairon your chin and thinner hair on
your scalp.
Now there also are other causesof hair loss on the scalp.

(06:17):
So that is certainly not theonly thing.
Right, but something toconsider.
Right, but something toconsider.
I'm not going to talk at greatdepth about menopause today or
that phase of life, but ifyou're thinking of your mom or
your aunts or your grandma orother gals in your life who are
of that age, then you mightremember them saying something

(06:40):
about chin hairs or thinninghair on their head.
It's kind of the same picture,or it's a similar picture, in
that during that phase of lifeyou are relatively androgen
dominant, in that your levels oftestosterone are higher than
what's going on with yourestrogen and progesterone, and
so that can result in thesedifferences or changes in hair

(07:05):
growth or hair loss and alsocoming back to, like, midsection
weight retention.
That's also very much tied toandrogens and insulin resistance
.
So I mentioned that just as alittle bit of food for thought.
That might be something you aremore aware of, like in the
larger sphere of what are otherwomen around you experiencing.

(07:26):
And just tying that back toagain.
Oh okay, our levels ofandrogens in our life just
change, right, as we get older, those levels will go down, but
they still can be higher, and Ishould say higher than estrogen
and progesterone.
I do think for most folks outthere, it is worth doing the

(07:49):
testing to understand exactlywhat's happening hormonally, get
the quantifiables, get the labwork done to understand what
your androgen levels look like,so you know that you're
addressing the right, best rootcause.
Also, you probably don't needme to tell you that if you have
facial hair like this, if youhave acne, if you have these
things that are more visual, right, of course there are side

(08:12):
effects that impact your energylevels etc.
But since these are more thingsyou can see on the outside, so
if you're like me when I hadacne back in the day, you're
like let's get this over as soonas possible and figure out
what's going on here.
So, so, anyway, that is all tosay that this is certainly this
is certainly lab work that youcould do, in part at least, with

(08:35):
your primary care provider, right, when you go and have your
panels run, your your annualcheckup, sometimes they will do
a testosterone test or can atleast request it.
When I'm working one-on-onewith clients, this is something
that we monitor through theDutch test.
That is the hormone panel thatI use with my clients.
So there are a couple ofdifferent ways for you to do it,

(08:57):
depending on what fits yourbudget, your lifestyle, who
you're working with, of course, but know that there are options
out there, and getting thequantifiables on it could be a
really helpful next step in theprocess for you in figuring out
a resolution.
Now let's move on to number twoof the three things that I want
you to know, which is thatandrogens and insulin resistance

(09:20):
are besties, but in the bad way.
I mentioned midsection weightgain a minute ago, kind of like
foreshadowing for this, but thepoint here, or what I want to
convey to you, is that insulinresistance can result in higher
levels of androgens.
Also, higher androgen levelscan further exacerbate insulin

(09:47):
resistance.
Now again, this is somethingthat is fixable.
This is something that you cantotally make progress towards
through simple or relativelysimple changes in your diet and
lifestyle.
But this is all to say that ifyou know that you're having
troubles with insulin, if youhave really irregular energy

(10:09):
throughout the day, if you arehaving irregular cycles that
also can signal high androgens, then these two things are going
to go hand in hand.
But starting with practicalchanges like focusing on getting
more balanced meals meaningprotein and fat forward, being
really conscious about what sortof processed sugars or added

(10:32):
sugars you're bringing into yourbody, that'll be a great first
step.
Also, knowing that strengthtraining will be good for both
your blood sugar levels and foryour androgen levels, and then
let me just say it one more timereducing sugar spikes without
any sort of extreme restriction, that will be really important.
So first step would be justmonitoring and becoming aware of

(10:56):
how much sugar are youconsuming on a day-to-day or
week-to-week basis and thenmaking a plan that is realistic
for you, or working withsomebody like a coach or
nutritionist to figure out howyou can create a plan that works
for you and be accountable toit and make it really work for
your lifestyle.
Those are some great places tostart.

(11:18):
The third topic that I want totalk about in just a moment will
be related to supplements, buthang on with me for a minute.
I want to walk through thiswith you kind of story style, to
make it really make sense foryou.
So, if you are somebody who hasexcess chin hair, you want to
start thinking through okay, well, what do I already know

(11:40):
about what's going on with myhormones?
Do I already recognize that mycycle is irregular?
I can't predict my next period.
How are your stress levels?
Do you have really high stresslevels, not just mental or
emotional stress, but also areyou doing really intense
workouts?
Are you eating a lot ofprocessed sugars?

(12:01):
Are you getting adequate sleep?
Then, are there any medicationsthat you're taking that could
be impacting what's going onwith your sex hormones?
Lastly, thinking, okay, what doI know about blood sugar
regulation?
Best practices, are thosethings that you implement?

(12:22):
And just reflecting on, okay, let me get a good picture here
of how these factors look for mein my life.
Of course, also, you'll want toput together this puzzle of
when did these changes start foryou?
Did it start after you finishedhormonal birth control.

(12:43):
Did it start after you had achild?
Did it start at a certain age?
Right, you turned 35 and thesehairs popped up.
So really putting together whatthat picture is for you and
then thinking, okay, well, nowthat you, etc.
When androgens are high, thatwill also result many times in

(13:14):
insulin resistance too.
But let me remind you thatthere's a lot that you can do to
focus on it, and let's look atsupplements in just a moment
here.
I guess that wasn't even somuch a story, but I just wanted
you to be able to think of okay, what are the things that are
relevant in my life?
How can you start thinkingthrough the process of what to

(13:37):
do next?
What focus areas are going tobe top of mind for you to zoom
in on?
So, anyway, hopefully that wasa helpful little recap before.
Now let's take a look atsupplements, and I want to
reiterate to you, too, thatsupplements can be helpful, but
only if you are targeting theright root cause.
So, making sure that youunderstand what the root cause

(14:00):
is.
Working with a practitioner, working with me, working with
somebody to say, okay, this isexactly what's going on with me.
Do whatever testing that mightbe helpful and supportive for
you and then using the rightsupplements to support your end
goal.
Okay, now I'm off my sort ofdisclaimer soapbox.

(14:22):
Here are the couple ofsupplements that are commonly
used to support your body whenyou have excess androgens.
The first one that I want tonote is inositol.
Now, inositol is good forsupporting insulin sensitivity,
also supportive of normalandrogen levels.
Also supportive of normalandrogen levels.

(14:48):
This is something that, if youhave PCOS, could be a part of,
or rather, could be somethingthat is familiar to you.
There are different kinds ofinositol right, there's
myo-inositol andd-chiro-inositol.
So if you are going to be doingsome research on your own, then
just know that there aredifferent kinds.
You want to find a supplementthat has them in the right ratio
to each other, so it'd be abouta 40 to 1 ratio, which is the

(15:10):
natural balance or the naturalratio that they exist in your
body.
So inositol is the first one.
Zinc is another mineral that isanti-angiogenic and it also
will support healthy skin andhair growth.
Third, magnesium Magnesium isthe hero of all of the

(15:32):
supplements.
If you've been listening for aminute or if you've been
listening to other wellnesspodcasts, and I'm sure you've
heard about magnesium a lot.
But magnesium can be supportiveof ideal stress levels in the
body, or rather, like reducingstress, supportive of your HPA
access.
So that's why this can beinfluential, right, if stress

(15:55):
levels are high, that can pushup androgen levels.
It also can be supportive ofmore stable blood sugar levels.
So that's going to be helpfulhere in keeping that stress down
and not giving your androgensan excuse to be particularly
high.
I want to mention, too, not thatthis is related to supplements,

(16:16):
but testosterone is produced inour ovaries right, ovaries for
those who are for women, and, ofcourse, testes for males.
But sometimes we just think oftestosterone as being produced
and like we don't know, becausewe're like I don't know, I have
ovaries that make estrogen.

(16:36):
But just note to self, yourovaries are also the organs that
produce testosterone.
Now, fourth and final, I wantto mention spearmint tea.
This is one that is prettyaccessible.
Right To know that spearmintcan be supportive of normal
androgen levels as well, so thatmight be something that you

(16:58):
feel more comfortable withgetting into.
Again, talk through all ofthese things with your coach or
practitioner or provider to makesure that it's a good fit for
you.
But inositol, zinc, magnesiumand spearmint tea.
Those are four areas to startwhen you're considering what
might be a good fit for you.

(17:19):
I do want to emphasize again, though it's not a one size fits
all.
Taking random ones withoutknowing your unique hormonal
picture can definitely befrustrating, and I don't want
you to be wasting more and moremoney.
I hear that from my clients allthe time.
They're just feel like they'rethrowing away money on
supplements, just tryingdifferent things.
So that's why having a clear, personalized plan can really

(17:41):
make all of the difference.
What is more of a one size fitsall, though?
Right If you're like well, that's not.
That's not a resource I haveavailable to me right now.
Something that is more one sizefits all would be moving your
body and exercising, if that'saccessible for you, lowering
your stress levels andeliminating or decreasing

(18:02):
stressors in your life, and thenalso learning about blood sugar
regulation All of these thingswhich you can learn about here
on.
I'm Hormonal, so you're in theright spot Now.
If you are tired of wonderingwhat's going on with your
hormones and you want a reallyclear, step-by-step plan to
balance them and get rid of yourchin hair, then that's exactly
what I help women do in myone-on-one coaching.

, or in summary.
One your chin hair is not justrandom.
It can be a sign of hormoneimbalance.
There's some more investigatingto be done there.
Two androgens and insulinresistance are best friends, and

(19:06):
not in the good way.
And then three supplements.
They can be really helpful, butonly if you are targeting the
right root cause.
So come back and check out whatwe've got going on.
On Thursday, I'm going to betalking about five signs of high
testosterone, so if you'rethinking okay, some of what you
said today, bridget, resonateswith me.

(19:28):
We'll come back on Thursday fora mini episode where we will
