Hello lovelies! Thanks for listening (and reading!)
Summary per Otter ai
Elizabeth West discusses the American Dream, emphasizing the freedom of choice as a central tenet. She reflects on her ancestors' sacrifices for her current freedoms, such as the right to vote and open a bank account, which were only recently achieved. Elizabeth highlights the societal pressure to pursue traditional careers over creative ones and the stigma against remote or online work. She concludes by expressing gratitude for her opportunities and announces an upcoming podcast course titled "Simple Podcasting Just Start," aimed at making podcasting accessible.
Summary by me:
Having a choice *is the American dream!
I've been listening to several different podcasts that have been saying something to the extent of "just existing are my ancestors' wildest dreams" and "how having a choice or an option is a part of the American dream". What does this mean exactly? Well, back in the day women in the US for example only had the choice to work as a nurse or a teacher and nothing else.
And then there's the whole belief that you gotta be a lawyer or a doctor and if you're not then you're a 'failure' to the family. But these days a lot of people are taking pay cuts (and some the opposite with being millionaires thanks to the option to create your own online business - things like the internet and paypal for example), that our ancestors *wish they had access to.
A lot of people are choosing to do what lights them up and what they feel is their purpose and are stating the idea that 'having' this choice or option, how this is really the dream that our ancestors wanted us to have and I agree.
