If you’ve applied for a job lately, it’s all but guaranteed that your application was reviewed by software—in most cases, before a human ever laid eyes on it. In this episode, the first in a four-part investigation into automated hiring practices, we speak with the CEOs of ZipRecruiter and Career Builder, and one of the architects of LinkedIn’s algorithmic job-matching system, to explore how AI is increasingly playing matchmaker between job searchers and employers. But while software helps speed up the process of sifting through the job market, algorithms have a history of biasing the opportunities they present to people by gender, race...and in at least one case, whether you played lacrosse in high school. We Meet:  Mark Girouard, Attorney, Nilan Johnson Lewis Ian Siegel, CEO, ZipRecruiter John Jersin, former Vice President of Product Management, LinkedIn Irina Novoselsky, CEO, CareerBuilder  We Talked To:  Mark Girouard, Attorney, Nilan Johnson Lewis Ian Siegel, CEO, ZipRecruiter John Jersin, former Vice President of Product Management, LinkedIn Irina Novoselsky, CEO, CareerBuilder  Derek Kan, Vice President of Product Management, Monster Aleksandra Korolova, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Southern California  Brian Kropp, Vice President Research, Gartner Matthew Neale, Vice President of Assessment Products, Criteria Corp Josh Bersin, Research Analyst Jonathan Kestenbaum, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Talent Tech Labs Suresh Venkatasubramanian, Assistant Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Sounds From:  How to Keep a Job, Coronet Instructional Films: https://archive.org/details/HowtoKee1949  Curious Thing AI (Sound from their AI tool) Credits: This episode was reported by Hilke Schellmann, and produced by Jennifer Strong, Emma Cillekens and Anthony Green with special thanks to Karen Hao. Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
