In the Field Audio Bib (05:58):
Stirring
again, slowly, and warily,
roosters call from courtyardwalls and the smell of ash
clings to the garments hungoutside to dry.
You walk beside me now.
The hem of my robe brushes thedry earth as we pass silent
(06:21):
homes and shuttered shops.
The road is still cool beneathour feet and though the sun has
not yet warmed the stones, theair is heavy with the weight of
unfinished conversations.
I did not sleep well, not afterwhat I spoke last night.
(06:42):
I have loved you, says the Lord, and still they asked how have
you loved us?
They asked that, and yet theyknew Deep down they knew.
But sometimes, when a heartgrows too familiar with the
(07:04):
sacred, it becomes deaf to loveand blind to truth.
So the message came heavy, likea millstone around my neck.
But I am not finished yet.
No, the word of the Lord burnsstill, and there is more to say.
(07:25):
We pass the temple again.
The courtyard is beginning tofill.
Priests donning their linengarments, children following
close behind carrying basketswith grain, or doves, maybe a
goat too frail to survive theseason.
I watch them.
Their faces are tired, theirhands practiced, but their eyes,
(07:50):
oh their eyes, they areelsewhere, far from the altar,
far from awe.
And the Lord's voice comesagain, not as a whisper this
time, but with sharpness, likethe clang of a sword dropped on
stone.
(08:10):
And now you, priest.
This warning is for you.
And now you, priest, thiswarning is for you.
If you do not listen and if youdo not resolve to honor my name
, I will send a curse on you.
Do you feel that the shift inthe air?
(08:34):
This is no gentle invitation, this is a reckoning.
The priests, the ones called tobless, to teach, to stand
between God and the people, theyhave stumbled.
The covenant of Levi, oncebright with purpose, has dimmed
(08:56):
beneath layers of pride andcompromise.
I can see their shoulders tenseas I speak.
I can see one priest grip hisstaff a little tighter, another
looks down, jaw clenched.
They know the words are true.
I made a covenant with Levi, says the Lord, a covenant of
(09:16):
life and peace, and I gave themto him.
He revered me and stood in aweof my name.
Do you remember what it waslike back then when the Levites
walked in step with God, whentheir lips guarded knowledge and
their instruction turned manyfrom sin.
(09:38):
The village remembers too, butonly faintly, like a melody long
forgotten or a tale told by theelders, that the young no
longer believe.
Now the priests have turned, corruption has taken root,
justice is twisted, partialityhas replaced purity and the
(10:02):
altar itself has become a placeof performance, not worship.
And the Lord, he, is not silentabout it.
You have caused many to stumble, you have violated the covenant
with Levi, he says through me,voice trembling with grief and
(10:24):
fire.
We step away from the temple now, walking through the outer
streets of the village, wherelaughter once echoed in
courtyards, weddings, familiesgathered under fig trees, but
now the joy is strained.
Husbands sit silently acrossfrom wives whose eyes have grown
(10:47):
hollow.
Children run between the homeswith questions they are too
young to ask, because somethingdeeper is broken.
Judah has been unfaithful, saysthe Lord.
A detestable thing has beencommitted in Israel and
Jerusalem.
Men have married women whoworship foreign gods.
(11:08):
This isn't about ethnicity,it's about covenant, about
hearts divided, about sacredpromises made before God and
broken in the dark.
I see it in their faces.
I've walked with them.
I've heard the weeping at thegates of the temple.
The men come with offerings, with sacrifices, with crocodile
(11:33):
tears.
But God does not look upontheir gifts, not while their
homes are full of betrayal, notwhile they abandon the wives of
their youth, the women who oncestood beside them at the altar
of commitment, who bore theirchildren and carried their
burdens.
You flood the Lord's altar withtears, I tell them, but he no
(12:00):
longer looks with favor on yourofferings.
You ask why?
Because the Lord is the witnessbetween you and the wife of
your youth.
(12:22):
We stop now standing near thevillage.
Well, a woman draws water, anold man sits nearby staring at
the ground.
There's tension in the silence, reverence, guilt, hope
flickering beneath shame.
And I say to you, just as Isaid to them guard your spirit
and do not be unfaithful.
Has not the one God made you?
(12:43):
You belong to him in body andspirit.
This is the cry of a jealous God, not because he is insecure,
but because he is investeddeeply, faithfully, eternally.
He hates divorce, not becausehe hates the people, but because
(13:03):
he knows what it does to them.
He knows the tearing, thesorrow, the trail of silence it
leaves behind.
So what is he asking of us?
Not a ritual, not a mask, notanother animal on the altar.
He's asking for truth in theinward parts, for covenant kept
(13:28):
not just with our mouths butwith our lives, for honor not
only in the temple but in thehome, for a love that mirrors
his own faithful, unshakable, sacred Malachi turns now looking
at you, eyes steady but notwithout kindness.
(13:52):
This is not the end of the story, he says, but it must be the
end of pretending.
Stay with us.
In the coming verses the Lordspeaks again, not only to expose
what's broken but to preparewhat's coming A messenger, a
(14:12):
fire, a refining wind.
But before the restoration canbegin, the truth must be told.
Now let's take a moment toquiet our hearts and listen to
the word itself.
Let these words sink deep intoyour spirit, bringing comfort,
(14:33):
conviction and encouragement,whether you're sitting in a
quiet place or out in the world, allow scripture to meet you
right where you are.
I hope you have your favoritecup of tea or coffee.
Sit back, relax and let's stepinto the sacred text of the Book
(14:54):
of Malachi 2.
And now?
O priests, this command is foryou.
(15:17):
If you will not listen, if youwill not lay it to heart to give
glory to my name, says the Lordof hosts, then I will send the
curse on you and I will curseyour blessings Indeed, I have
already cursed them because youdo not lay it to heart.
(15:38):
I will rebuke your offspringand spread dung on your faces,
the dung of your offerings, andI will put you out of my
presence.
Know, then, that I have sentthis command to you that my
covenant with Levi may hold, says the Lord of hosts.
(16:00):
My covenant with him was acovenant of life and well-being,
which I gave him.
This called for reverence, andhe revered me and stood in awe
of my name.
True instruction was in hismouth and no wrong was found on
his lips.
He walked with me in integrityand uprightness, and he turned
(16:26):
many from iniquity, for the lipsof a priest should guard
knowledge and people should seekinstruction from his mouth, for
he is the messenger of the Lordof hosts.
But you have turned aside fromthe way.
You have caused many to stumbleby your instruction, caused
many to stumble by yourinstruction.
(16:47):
You have corrupted the covenantof Levi, says the Lord of hosts
, and so I make you despised andabased before all the people,
inasmuch as you have not kept myways but have shown partiality
in your instruction.
Have we not all.
(17:07):
One father has not one Godcreated us.
Why then are we faithless toone another, profaning the
covenant of our ancestors?
Judah has been faithless andabomination has been committed
in Israel and in Jerusalem, forJudah has profaned the sanctuary
(17:29):
.
May the Lord cut off from thetents of Jacob anyone who does
this, any to witness or answeror to bring an offering to the
Lord of hosts, and this you doas well.
You cover the Lord's altar withtears, with weeping and
(17:54):
groaning, because he no longerregards the offering or accepts
it with favor.
At your hand, you ask why doeshe not?
Because the Lord was a witnessbetween you and the wife of your
youth.
Did not one God make her?
Both flesh and spirit are His.
And what does the one Goddesire?
(18:25):
Godly offspring.
So look to yourselves and donot let anyone be faithless to
the wife of his youth, for Ihate divorce, says the Lord, the
God of Israel, and coveringone's garment with violence,
says the Lord of hosts.
So take heed to yourselves anddo not be faithless.
(18:47):
You have wearied the Lord withyour words, yet you say how have
we wearied him?
By saying all who do evil aregood in the sight of the Lord
and he delights in them, or byasking where is the God of
(19:23):
justice?
The sun is lower now, stretchedlong across the stone paths of
the village.
Orange light flickers on thewalls, casting shadows over
doorways once filled with songs.
We sit once more on the edge ofthe city near a dry fig tree.
The breeze is quiet, almostreverent.
(19:47):
The breeze is quiet, almostreverent, as if the earth itself
is holding its breath beneaththe weight of the words that
have just been spoken.
You fled the Lord's altar withtears, I said.
But he no longer looks withfavor upon your offerings.
You remember those words, don'tyou?
(20:07):
You saw the tears.
I did too, but not all tearsare holy.
Some are soaked in regret, others in manipulation.
And the Lord, he sees thedifference.
I watched men bow at the templeand break covenant at home.
(20:28):
I watched priests bless withtheir lips but poison with their
teaching what we once heldsacred marriage, worship, truth.
We now trade for comfort andconvenience.
You have turned from the way, says the Lord, and by your
(20:48):
teaching have caused many tostumble.
There were children watchingwives weeping, students of the
law, now confused by the livesof their teachers.
When the covenant is cracked, the fracture spreads into homes,
into generations, into theheart.
(21:14):
You and I sit quietly now.
The road is nearly empty and adistant dog barks down near the
valley.
I can't help but ask myself, and I ask you too.
I can't help but ask myself andI ask you too where in your
(21:36):
life have you offered the Lordyour words but withheld your
heart?
Are there promises you'vebroken, not just to people, but
to God?
Is your worship built onreverence or routine?
We are the covenant people.
That means something.
It's more than a title.
It's a posture.
A sacred responsibility has notthe one God made you.
(22:04):
You belong to him in body andspirit.
So guard yourselves in yourspirit and do not be unfaithful.
God isn't just calling us torituals.
He's calling us to relationshipwhen marked by faithfulness,
honor and truth in the inwardparts.
He's not impressed withsacrifices if we're tearing down
(22:25):
sacred things behind closeddoors, and he will not ignore
injustice, especially when it'sdone in his name.
I rise from where we sit, brushing dust from my robe.
The light has faded into dusknow.
Fires crackle behind a fewdoors, but the real fire, the
(22:49):
one that matters, is stillburning within the words I've
spoken, and I leave you withthis Guard your spirit, keep
your promises.
Let your worship reflect yourwitness.
God is not far off.
He is here watching not justwhat we bring to his altar but
(23:13):
how we treat the ones he'splaced in our care.
He is the God of covenant, theGod of justice, the God who
still longs for hearts fully his.
As we leave Malachi 2, don'tleave unchanged.
Examine what's hidden, restorewhat's broken and remember.
(23:36):
Faithfulness is not just abouthow you start but how you finish
