In the Field Audio Bibl (04:34):
Tonight
I have paused again, not for
lack of words, but because theweight of what I am about to
write it feels too holy forhaste.
Outside, the city stirs inquiet ways.
(04:55):
A boy runs barefoot throughepisode, the dust, laughing, his
scolds him in that warm, rhythmic way, the way that only
mothers do.
Somewhere, a man argues overthe price of figs.
Ordinary sounds, ordinarypeople.
(05:15):
And write, what I write is notfor kings or scholars alone.
Not for kings or scholars alone.
It is for them, for the mothers, the laborers, the weary, the
tempted, the broken, theforgotten, for the ones who need
(05:37):
to know that the God of heavenhas appointed a high priest, one
who knows their name, who haswalked their roads, who does not
scoff at their weakness butstands in it with them.
I've written of rest, ofwarning, of obedience that leads
(05:57):
to peace.
Now I must write of the one whostands between God and man, the
one who does not simply teachthe way but is the way, not like
the priest of old, who offeredsacrifices but had sins of their
(06:19):
own.
No, this priest is different.
He wept, he cried out, helearned obedience through
suffering.
Yes, he learned.
Can you believe it?
Even the Son of God took onweakness, so we would never be
(06:43):
alone in ours.
Every high priest is appointedto represent the people in
matters related to God.
And what if?
What if the one appointed nowis not just representative but
redeemer.
What if the priest is not onlyholy but also human?
(07:07):
I am tired, but not weary, thekind of tired that comes after
obedience, the kind that remindsyou this work matters.
You see, this letter is morethan instruction.
It is an invitation, an urgingto hold fast, a plea not to
(07:31):
drift away, because the one wespeak of, this high priest, he
is not distant, he is notunreachable, he is not
indifferent.
He prayed with loud cries, helearned through pain, he was
made perfect not because helacked anything, but because he
(07:54):
bore everything.
And if even he was shapedthrough suffering, what of us?
So I write, not for recognition, not for history, but because
the church must know the bridgehas been built, the mercy is
(08:17):
real and the throne of grace isnot guarded.
It is open.
The scroll is not finished yet,but I am closer now, and so I
dip the quill once more.
For every high priest isappointed to represent the
(08:39):
people and matters relating toGod.
And so it begins.
This is Hebrews 5, a whisperthrough time that tells us
Christ did not simply come tosave, he came to understand and
to offer mercy that no failurecan cancel.
(09:03):
As we prepare to hear Hebrews 5,take a moment to settle your
heart.
It is not just theology, it'stenderness.
It's about a Savior who steppedinto weakness, who cried out in
agony, who didn't just carryour sin but felt our sorrow.
This isn't distant doctrine,it's deeply personal.
(09:25):
The high priest we read of hereis Jesus, not robed in
untouchable glory, but clothedin compassion, and that changes
everything.
So, as you listen, reflect notonly on who he is, but on why he
(09:51):
came.
He represents us still.
He intercedes for you now andhe understands every part of
your human experience.
Let this chapter remind you youare never too broken to
approach God, never too far toreturn.
There is mercy waiting, thereis grace in abundance and there
is a high priest who knows yourname.
(10:11):
Now let's take a moment toquieten our hearts and listen to
the word itself.
Let these words sink deep intoyour spirit, bringing comfort,
conviction and encouragement.
Whether you're sitting in aquiet place or out in the world,
allow scripture to meet youright where you are.
(10:34):
I hope you have your favoritecup of tea or coffee.
Sit back, relax and let's stepinto the sacred text of the
Epistle to the Hebrews 5.
(11:11):
Every high priest chosen fromamong mortals is put in charge
of things pertaining to God ontheir behalf, to offer gifts and
sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal gently withthe ignorant and wayward, since
he himself is subject toweakness, and because of this he
(11:33):
must offer sacrifice for hisown sins as well as for those of
the people, and one does notpresume to take this honor, but
takes it only when called by God.
Just as Aaron was, so alsoChrist did not glorify himself
in becoming a high priest, butwas appointed by the one who
(11:56):
said to him you are my son.
Today I have begotten you.
As he says also in anotherplace, you are a priest forever,
according to the order ofMelchizedek.
In the days of his flesh, Jesusoffered up prayers and
supplications, with loud criesand tears, to the one who was
(12:20):
able to save him from death, andhe was heard because of his
reverent submission.
Although he was a son, helearned obedience through what
he suffered and, having beenmade perfect, he became the
source of eternal salvation forall who obey him, having been
(12:41):
designated by God a high priestaccording to the order of
Melchizedek.
About this we have much to saythat is hard to explain, since
you have become dull inunderstanding.
For, though, by this time youought to be teachers.
You need someone to teach youagain the basic elements of the
(13:02):
oracles of God.
You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk.
Being still an infant isunskilled in the word of
righteousness, but solid food isfor the mature, for those whose
faculties have been trained bypractice to distinguish good
(13:23):
from evil.
So, as we close today, I wantto leave you with something
(13:45):
simple, not a challenge, not achecklist, but a question what
would you change in your life ifyou truly believed Jesus was
that near in your life, if youtruly believe Jesus was that
near?
Hebrews 5 paints a picture of aSavior who didn't stay at a
(14:06):
distance, he drew near, he feltwhat we felt.
He prayed through tears, heobeyed through suffering, he was
heard, not because he wasimmune to pain, but because he
entered it fully.
And now he invites you to dothe same, to stop pretending, to
(14:27):
stop pushing through in yourown strength, to stop believing
the lie that you have to beperfect to be close to God to be
close to God.
So how do you apply this?
You remember in your everyday, quiet ways.
When you're anxious, whisperhis name.
(14:47):
When you're tired, lean intohim when you're grieving, tell
him everything.
When you're ashamed, draw near, not away.
He is not repelled by yourweakness, he relates to it.
Let the truth of Hebrews 5settle into your life this week.
(15:10):
Let it show up in how you pray, how you forgive, how you rest.
You don't have to go far tofind him.
He is already beside you, listening, interceding,
understanding.
He is not only the high priestabove us, he is the high priest
(15:31):
with us.
Let that truth live in you, andmay it bring you peace.
So, as you reflect on thenearness of Christ, don't walk
this journey alone.
We were never meant to Let thetruth of Hebrews 5 stir
something, not just in you butbetween us.
(15:52):
Encourage one another, praytogether, share the hard
questions, remind someone todaythat they are not alone, that
Jesus still intercedes and thatthere is grace for every step.
Lean into community thatreflects his compassion.
(16:13):
Build fellowship that helps usgrow, not in performance but in
trust, because when we cometogether, real, honest and
hungry for more of him, webecome the kind of church that
echoes heaven's heart.
Let's walk in that grace, let'slead each other toward it and,
(16:36):
above all, let's never forgetour high priest is not distant.
He is here With you, with usAlways.
Thank you for joining me todayas we journeyed through the
epistle to the Hebrews, chapter5.
(16:57):
I pray that you carry thesereflections with you into your
day, into your week, and thatyou find strength in knowing God
is with you in every trial, every temptation, and every step
of obedience.
If this time in God's word hasencouraged you, take a moment to
(17:18):
share it with someone who mightneed it.
And be sure to join me nexttime as we continue walking
through the scriptures, learning, growing, and staying faithful
in the field of life.
Until next time, may you findpeace in the quiet trust in
God's call and rest in Hisunchanging love.
