It's In the Field Radio
y'all.
Everything's real in the fieldOn 91.3 FM WVKR.
Erin Boogie (00:20):
Welcome back to In
the Field Radio.
I'm Erin Boogie.
I'm here with Miss Lady D.
Lady D (00:24):
What's going on?
Erin Boogie (00:25):
And we have a
special guest in the building
the first of the year at aBrooklyn, new York, miss JL hey.
I'm excited we haven't done aninterview in such a long time.
Lady D (00:38):
I know and I feel like
this is the perfect way to get
back into it.
Erin Boogie (00:43):
Absolutely yes, and
her song Okay.
So here's what really drew meto you was the no man Song.
Was like Women EmpowermentCentral, and that's like the
theme of our show.
Jay Elle Music (00:58):
Ah, see, see,
Perfect Match made in heaven.
exactly.
WL.
Yes, so I mean,
that's it.
You know, I'm all about womenempowerment.
I'm all about, you know, notbeing in a box.
You know, as women, most of thetime it's like we have to fit
in this perfect little box, youknow, have perfect little women.
(01:19):
And it's like for me it's like, you know, I've always been
independent, I've always been ago getter, I've always been my
own boss.
You know, I've always been allof these things.
So it's like you can't put mein a box Like that.
That don't work for me.
You know what I mean.
I'm very opinionated, yeah, andit's like you know, I'm gonna
say what I need to say.
I'm gonna stand on business.
How do they say I'm gonna standon business?
(01:40):
You know what I'm saying.
So that's just me.
You know I by no meansdisrespectful, evil, anything
like that.
But it's like, at the end ofthe day, you know, especially
being in a space where most ofthe time is dominated by men,
you know you have to stand onyour square, otherwise people
will try you.
And it's like for me it's aboutI have a voice, I have a story
(02:01):
and I'm gonna say it the way Iwant to say it, not the way
somebody else gonna tell me tosay it so yeah, have people
tried to tell you how to saythings?
Lady D (02:09):
Have people tried to
change your music?
Jay Elle Music (02:11):
People try to
change my music, my hair, my
nails, my eyelashes, my makeup,my shoes, my everything.
It's just what it is.
You know what I mean.
Like people want you to be whatthey want you to be and then,
if you do that, youuncomfortable with yourself At
the end of the day.
You got to live with yourself.
You got to live with yourself.
You got to go to sleep withyourself at night at the end of
(02:32):
the day, and you have to behappy and comfortable with it.
How is different?
Right, when somebody's givingyou sound advice, it's different
when somebody's telling you youknow business advice, because
(02:55):
at the end of the day, this isthe music business, right?
So you know, but at the sametime you have to take what makes
sense for you and then let therest slide off your back.
You know, because what may workfor this person may not work
for you, or what may have workedin the past may not work now.
So you have to know.
You know you have to havepeople around you who are not
(03:18):
just telling you just whateverfluff you know, or try to turn
you into somebody else or turnyou into something else that has
already happened.
But I want to be something new, something fresh.
You know I don't want to besomebody who already exists.
Why would we need that?
You know what I mean.
Like, we don't need two of thesame artists that already exist.
I want to be JL Music.
You know I don't want to be oryou're the next such and such.
(03:39):
No, I'm the next JaL Music Like, and that's who I want to be
yeah.
Lady D (03:45):
I think it's important
to note folks, it is Jay Elle
Music.
Jay Elle Music (03:48):
You need to say
all three.
Lady D (03:50):
Do not just try to find
her without typing the "usic,
because you'll find other people.
It will be hard to do that.
It will be hard to do that.
Jay Elle Music (03:58):
Yes, I'm glad
you pointed it out, and that's
exactly why you know it's.
You know it's.
It's a clarifier.
When you type JL Music, youdon't see JL Music, though Make
sure.
Yeah, I'm gonna say JL Music.
Lady D (04:11):
Now, how do you feel
about?
I mean, I see hashtag, you knowthe cover queen.
Jay Elle Music (04:17):
Yes.
Lady D (04:17):
What?
What if people Just think thatyou don't have original stuff,
Like, do you feel like theoriginal stuff is even better?
Do you have more original stuff?
Jay Elle Music (04:27):
So I'm cool with
that.
If people say, if people areinterested enough to be like oh
I wonder if she has originalstuff, that means they're going
to look for it.
So I'm cool with that.
You know what I mean.
Like if somebody is soimpressed by a cover, be like.
Oh see, I have two ways aboutit, right.
Somebody is so impressed, likeoh, that was so dope, I want to
see if she has other music.
Or you might have somebodywho'd be like I can't believe
(04:49):
she trashed that classic, likethat.
But at the end of the day, they're still talking about it.
You know what I mean.
So for me it's like say whatyou want, but if you still
talking, you talking.
Lady D (05:00):
So that's interesting,
that's cool.
Jay Elle Music (05:05):
You can't please
everybody.
You know what I mean.
Like if you live your lifetrying to please everybody, you
will not please the one personthat you need to please and
that's yourself.
Because no matter what you do,if you do this one thing, that's
like, if I make you know, ifErin likes eggs and I make eggs
and Deb you like I hate eggs, then like, all right, well, let
me make something else, I'mgonna make collard greens and
(05:25):
Erin like I hate collard greens.
So it's like you can neverplease everybody.
You know what I'm saying.
So you have to do what's rightfor you, do what feels good to
you, and then the people whoexplore they'll come to it.
Lady D (05:38):
I like that because a
lot of people complain about the
people who don't like them andI'm like why are you so focused
about the people who don't likeyou?
And then the people who arethere supporting you and loving
you you give like no attentionto whatsoever.
Jay Elle Music (05:51):
That's terrible,
that's a fact.
That's a fact.
Like you know, I just had anexperience where somebody who
posted me they had they, youknow they were having a birthday
and they're like, oh, a lot ofpeople are not gonna come.
So you celebrate the people whoare there.
You celebrate with the peoplewho are there, because those are
the people who are truly closeto you, who truly care about you
(06:12):
, who truly make an effort to bethere to spend that time with
you.
The fact that you know thatmakes it seem like their effort
to be there doesn't meananything, because the people who
really don't matter didn't showup, you know what I mean.
So it was like show up for thepeople who show up for you and
the people who don't.
You know, you got two fingersthat could deal with that, but
whatever.
Lady D (06:34):
How long into making is
your music career?
How long you been doing this?
Jay Elle Music (06:38):
it.
It's been a while long in themaking and so I started singing,
probably I don't even know whatage, but I wasn't originally
called myself a singeroriginally, Right, you know, I
was more into that dance andfashion and stuff like that.
But my brother and my cousinsand had some friends who were
like all started getting intosinging and it was just kind of
(07:00):
like oh, you don't even see whatI mean.
So it was kind of like that.
So I kind of like jumped in it.
You know, it was just like oh,I want to thank you.
Y'all gonna come?
I was a pick me at that point.
Y'all Listen, tell the truth.
Lady D (07:14):
Oh wait, how old were
you, so you had to be like 13.
Jay Elle Music (07:17):
I feel like
Probably, maybe a little younger
than that, probably like 11, Iwould say.
And then after that, you know,we all played around and did a
lot of different things.
And then we started a girlgroup Me and two of my really
good friends.
We started a girl group, but itwas so cute and it was actually
good, like you know.
People were actually interestedin us, yeah what was it called?
(07:41):
It was just our initials.
It was just JAS J-A-S.
It was just our initials and myinitial was the first letter
and that's the only first thingI ever had, cause I never had no
lead, I never had, I never hadnone of that.
So it was just like hold upy'all, think y'all finna sing
without me?
what we doing, what we doinghere, but so, yeah, that was
(08:02):
that.
It was a lot of, it was fun,but you know, we were young so
we had like mama-gers, this andthat, and you know the tattiness
, so it was a lot of that.
Not, you know, then this personwon't my daughter, the same
lead and this person it's likeUh-uh, not the moms getting into
it.
Yeah, it was mama-gers involvedand it was just.
(08:28):
And then, so you know, I waslike whatever, forget this.
So I was just like you knowwhat, whatever.
But I was just kind of like youknow what, I wanna do it by
myself.
So I was kind of thinking thenI was like, well, I'm gonna do
it by myself.
I ain't got no songs.
So I was just like to get it,I'm not gonna do that anymore.
But then I was just like youknow what?
I think I still wanna do it.
So I was like I'm gonna try andwrite my first song.
(08:49):
So I wrote my first song and Iwas just like oh, I'm good at
this.
So I was just like you know what, ever since then, I just kept
going.
I mean, I had some ups anddowns, some you know, some
tribulations and things thattested me throughout that time.
But you know, after that I wasjust like I'm not dealing with
no other people right now, I'mjust doing solo, doing it on my
own, and that's where I'm rightnow.
Lady D (09:12):

Jay Elle Music (10:16):
I've been
listening to all types of music.
Well, let me not say all typesof music, because house, at the
time I was listening to, youknow, at the time it was, um, it
(10:38):
was a lot.
Of course, people listen toMichael Jackson.
It was a lot of Michael Jacksonbeing played.
It was a lot of Mariah Careybeing played um, and then, as I
started to go through music onmy own, it was um I liked a lot
of hip hop.
I like a lot of hip hop, so youknow that's I don't know.
(10:59):
You can hear that in myundertones and a lot of my music
not no man, but a lot of myother records you can hear that
a lot,So no man was just a.
It's just a fun song like right, it's not, it's not my personal
story, but it's just a fun song.
Um, it's just about a woman inher healing stage.
You know, sometimesrelationships go through this
(11:21):
cycle and you get to the end andit's like.
You know, forget this.
I ain't, I ain't messing withy'all, no more.
I'm done.
I'm focused on me, focus ongetting my money, but I need to
have some fun too.
A girl got to have a littletime.
You know, friends with benefitshave a day, so wait, wait.
Lady D (11:36):
What's going on?
So do you have a man right now?
Jay Elle Music (11:39):
right now I do
not have a man, single, you know
.
Lady D (11:44):
Can you single, single,
for life?
Erin Boogie (11:46):
Team no man.
Right now can you no man?
Jay Elle Music (11:48):
right now.
But you know I'm, I fall inlove quick.
So I'm, I'm like gosh.
You know, I don't know, I'm inthere two weeks later.
I'll be like y'all.
I like, I love a man, I'm a manthat's what's your sign.
Lady D (11:59):
Uh, uh, what is your
sign.
Jay Elle Music (12:02):
I'm a Sag, I'm
sad to say it.
We don't fall in love often.
I don't know what that?
Lady D (12:06):
that's one of the sexy
signs.
I feel like it's a very sexysign.
Jay Elle Music (12:10):
Sag is a very
sexy sign.
I'm glad you said that Sag is avery sexy sign.
We, very we shoot straight fromthe hip.
We don't use a lot of fluff, wedon't.
You know people call us rude, but we don't.
We just tell it like it is, youknow.
I mean I'm not about to sithere and be s you like.
You know we tell her how it is.
But and we don't like a lot ofpeople, we don't fall in love
(12:31):
often, but when we like somebody, we like them all the way.
Erin Boogie (12:36):
We we go hard and
you guys are not afraid to walk
away either at all.
Jay Elle Music (12:40):
Listen, if you
deal with a sag and they walk
away, it's, it's over for you.
It's over you.
It's it would never.
They will never come back likewe wanted those people who we
would try to make it work.
But once we done it's, oh, it's, it's up to you, that's it, it
would.
You will never get it back, see.
Erin Boogie (13:02):
Yeah, my best
friend is a Sag.
Lady D (13:17):
Aquarius, be off the
chain, for no, it's just without
a cause.
Jay Elle Music (13:24):
Aquarius Though
I ain't gonna lie, I love
Aquarius yeah, um let's talkabout.
Lady D (13:30):
So talk a little about
about your um process for like
your songs.
Do you have like a songwritingprocess or?
Jay Elle Music (13:39):
I guess it is a
process, but for me, like you
know, it's easier for me to turnon the music, turn on the track
, go in the booth and recordwhile I'm creating the, the
lyrics and the melody and theidea that's my process.
Um, you know, a lot of peoplehave a different, you know,
process.
Some people they have to sitdown and you have to write it on
(14:00):
the pad.
They have to.
You know, they have to see it,they have to write.
You raise, not me.
I have to record it and thenlisten back and say, oh, I think
I might change that, I think Iwant to put a harmony here.
Oh, I think I want to changethat lyric, or I want to do
something else right there.
So I have to hear it.
Erin Boogie (14:17):
what are some
things you need in the studio to
create a vibe?
Jay Elle Music (14:20):
I don't.
All I need is a mic honey,because I don't need a vibe like
I am the vibe you know, I'msaying like I don't.
I don't need the vibe, I don't.
I don't need that like justgive me the mic press.
For what?
It will be there.
I do like, I do like lower like, though I'm not gonna lie.
I do like, lower like, but Idon't really need a vibe because
you know I bring vibes.
working on um, right now, um, Ihave a little sexy songs.
(14:43):
You know that sexy sad drive um, but I'm also working on
working on some, um, somevisuals for that.
So I want it to be more visuals, you know, as the as the year
goes along, um.
So, yeah, that's what I'mreally working on right now.
Lady D (15:07):
Have you performed a lot
?
Jay Elle Music (15:10):
Prior to like
this year, last year, but Last
year I probably performed maybeabout five, six times, but this
year, 2024, we doing all theperformances, we trying to do
like some mini tours and and I'malso Performing in new york
fashion week this coming week,um, so yeah, anybody in new york
(15:33):
, you know you go see the flyersand make sure y'all, how about,
how about to see your girl?
I'm walking in some shows andI'm performing at some shows for
new york fashion week.
So you know, make sure you comecheck that out.
Lady D (15:46):
How tall are you?
Jay Elle Music (15:49):
I am not, so.
Have you guys seen any of mypictures like on my instagram?
Yes so I want you guys to guessmy height.
Lady D (15:58):
Oh my goodness.
Erin Boogie (16:00):
Five six.
Lady D (16:07):
Five, three or four.
Jay Elle Music (16:09):
Five, three or
four.
Both of you are wrong.
I am four, four, eleven.
I'm really five feet.
So people say I'm four, eleven.
Yes, and you know, I ask thatquestion because everybody who
sees my instagram like you looktaller than me on instagram,
I'll be like no, no, that's justmy personality.
You see it, you know, throughthe pictures.
Erin Boogie (16:29):
That's wild Mm-hmm.
Jay Elle Music (16:32):
Yep.
Lady D (16:34):
That's adorbz.
I feel like I wish I was thatsmall.
Erin Boogie (16:39):
Like finally, I'm
taller than someone.
Lady D (16:43):
But, you're taller.
Oh, my god, oh.
I'm five even five seven, so ohcome on yes.
Erin Boogie (16:51):
Five even.
Lady D (16:53):
Oh my god, here it is Um
.
What do you do to like Developyourself, like develop your
talent?
Jay Elle Music (17:05):
Yeah, that's a
great question and, um, that's a
lot of reason why I'm actuallyeven here now is Challenging
myself, like.
You know what I mean.
Like, for me, it's aboutbesting myself, you know, like,
uh, like I said, I wasn't thegreatest singer at the beginning
and it's just like I want to beable to Do harmonies and my
notes not go off.
I want to be able to hear theharmonies, I want to be able to
(17:27):
Hit better notes, I want to beable to hit higher notes, I want
to be able to, you know, control my vocals, and all of
those things is with me Tryingto better myself, and so that's
what it is.
You know, just looking atmyself and saying you know what,
what do I want to improve, howdo I want to improve it?
And then I just go about Tryingto to do those things.
You know, I'm a big self-helpperson.
(17:48):
I'm a big Um self-learner.
So I Google a lot of stuff, Iresearch a lot of stuff, and
even something as small as, likeyou know, how to hold a note or
how to you know stuff like that.
So for me, everything is aboutbest than myself.
I'm in competition with myselfevery day, and yeah, there's
some things you like to dooutside of music.
(18:10):
Oh, outside of music and y'all,I really like to do puzzles, you
know, like jigsaw puzzles,don't laugh.
Erin Boogie (18:16):
I see, look.
Jay Elle Music (18:17):
I see a job
laughing already.
Stop laughing.
I love you.
I love you jigsaw puzzles.
Stop laughing.
But yeah, how many pieces I've?
I've done a thousand piecepuzzles.
Listen, I love me some puzzles,y'all.
So.
But I mean other than that, Imean excited stuff.
I mean I like to travel.
I love to travel.
I'm a big foodie, so newrestaurants I'm take me.
(18:41):
I'm near, I'm near person.
Um, I love restaurants, I love.
I'm a real big DIY person, I doit yourself person, I love.
It's just, I guess, because I'ma creative, but I love doing
the IY project, like creatinglittle things or you know, I
love stuff like that.
Erin Boogie (18:57):
I don't know what's
your favorite place to eat in
the city.
Jay Elle Music (19:02):
I have not,
honestly, I haven't.
I've been eating in the citymaybe in about a year now, but,
um, the last time I was in thecity just for dinner, I was
vegan at the time.
Um, I've kind of weaned myselfoff a little bit from that.
I eat chicken now.
I still don't eat dairy.
Uh, I had dinner at this placecalled planter queen.
So good, so good.
(19:23):
It's vegan, but even if you'renot vegan, you will enjoy the
food.
It was really really good.
Erin Boogie (19:29):
So what about in
brookland and?
Jay Elle Music (19:31):
brookland.
My favorite place to eat isstandalone's pizza shop on
sutter avenue in east new yorkbrookland.
Listen to me, you're staying up.
Shout out to the pizza.
Erin Boogie (19:42):
That's what we
wanted here I got the best pizza
okay.
So I mean you broke off and didthe solo artist thing, but do
you enjoy working with anybodyelse at all?
Jay Elle Music (20:03):
I love working
with other people.
It just so happens that I don'tget the opportunity to do that
often, but I would love to dothat more often.
You know like I lovecollaborating with people, I
love writing with people, I loveperforming with people, I love,
you know, doing songs withpeople, and so I hope to do a
lot more of that this year.
Erin Boogie (20:21):
Who's your dream
collab?
Jay Elle Music (20:24):
Oh, I have so
many y'all.
But you know I'm in my sexy R&Bsad vibe.
So my number one collab will beand this is gonna probably
nobody's gonna even guess Iwould say this but Tank.
Hey, I love Tank as an artist.
I love Tank as a writer.
(20:45):
I love his vocals.
Like you have some backgroundson Tank on the song.
It just takes the song to thenext level.
It's like, oh my god.
So Tank is definitely my dreamcollab For sure.
Erin Boogie (21:01):
I think that's the
first on the show.
Jay Elle Music (21:04):
Love it, love it
.
I can listen to Tank album backfor for from back, yeah.
Lady D (21:10):
What about producers?
You got favorite producers orwho you wanna work with.
Jay Elle Music (21:15):
Don't have
favorite producers, but it's
just so many amazing producersright now that I can't even name
Any.
You know, I don't listen.
I wanna work with all theproducers, All the producers.
Me, yes, me, Right here.
Lady D (21:32):
How do you feel about
the rap girlies beefing?
Erin Boogie (21:35):
Oh, I was gonna ask
that too.
Jay Elle Music (21:37):
You know what?
Listen, I mind my own business,I mind my Jay Elle music
business.
So I don't really have anopinion about it, about either
side either way.
But I just think it's justunfortunate.
You know it would be so dope to.
On the one hand it'sunfortunate right, because it's
like two beautiful women, twosuccessful women.
(21:59):
You don't wanna see them goingat it, but at the same time beef
is kind of part of hip hop too.
So it's like.
It's like, you know, it's abalance.
You know you can look at it oneor two ways.
Lady D (22:12):
Would you beef with
anybody Like do
Jay Elle Music (22:16):
I don't have a
dream beef.
No
Lady D (22:21):
It wouldn't be fun to
crack on somebody?
Jay Elle Music (22:24):
So here's the
thing, right, here's the thing.
So the reason for me why Iwouldn't be for somebody is
because I'm a big fan of beef.
I wouldn't be for somebodybecause I just don't give a.
I mean, ooh, I can't say that,I'm sorry, I just don't care,
right, I don't care enough tobeef with somebody.
And the other part of that is,even though I am a, I'm
definitely cut through, likesaddest.
We're just we like that.
(22:45):
We'll say something that willcut your whole life down and
make you wanna be like why, whyis this?
And we're like that, so I wouldnever wanna do that.
And then it really hurtssomebody in a way that you know
you don't really wanna hurtpeople.
I'm not into hurting people,I'm not into, you know, that
type of thing.
But you pushed me to the limitand you're gonna get all this
energy.
(23:05):
So it's kind of like I don'treally wanna and I just don't
care enough you know, say whatyou want, I don't care Like it,
don't it.
Don't make me no different.
Erin Boogie (23:16):
How do you feel
about modern rap beef, though
taking place more on Twitterthan it does on Wax?
Jay Elle Music (23:21):
I think it's
hilarious.
Honestly, I think it'shilarious.
I think it would be so muchbetter if it was happening on
Wax.
You know what I mean.
It'd just be so much more epic.
You know what I'm saying, butit's just funny.
It's funny Like Twitter is wellX now.
Whatever, it's hilarious Like.
You know what I mean.
One of my favorite apps is justhilarious to me.
Erin Boogie (23:45):
X's and shambles
right now.
It really is.
Jay Elle Music (23:49):
What's going on,
Elon?
Lady D (23:55):
I feel like I wish that
beefs happened in other genres
Like imagine a country song likeyeah, Jell-A-Roll better get
out Jell-A-Roll.
Erin Boogie (24:05):
Yeah, it probably
does.
We're probably just not tappedin.
Jay Elle Music (24:09):
You know that's
true, that is true, but that
would be hilarious.
I would love it.
I would love it R&B beef Iwould love it.
Lady D (24:19):
Mariah Carey was in a
beef right.
Erin Boogie (24:21):
Yes, with Eminem
Lady D (24:24):
E minem Can you imagine
how brave that is?
Jay Elle Music (24:28):
M1.
M1.
Erin Boogie (24:32):
E minem Yeah, but
let's be real, mariah Carey is
the queen of petty.
I don't know that you could gettoo many beefs past her and not
have her win.
Jay Elle Music (24:42):
Carey.
Love you, mariah, my boy.
If I was going to, beef.
Erin Boogie (24:50):
I would want to
beef with Mariah Carey, just so
that she could shade me.
Or like Rihanna, like Rihannabeef would be epic.
Jay Elle Music (25:01):
The same.
You beef the shade too real.
Gotta love it, though.
Shade is good.
Shade is good, whether it'sagainst you or somebody you know
, or whoever.
Good shade is good, you gottalove who she is.
Lady D (25:17):
I just want to beef with
a 50 cent probably.
Jay Elle Music (25:19):
You said you
would or wouldnt?
Lady D (25:21):
I would Everybody would
see it.
I mean, as long as he didnt nuton my face
Erin Boogie (25:29):
He's like a kid
with a hoodie too, Like when he
bought all of Ja Rule.
Front row tickets.
Lady D (25:33):
Yeah, that's so fun.
He has beef Like.
Jay Elle Music (25:39):
Not come up off
it.
Erin Boogie (25:41):
Yeah, you come out
to the stage and perform for
nobody, because 50 cent boughtall your tickets.
Like how angry was that Ja Rulethinking he sold these tickets.
And now he comes out and it'snobody there.
Jay Elle Music (25:53):
At the end of
the day.
Guess what, though, like hesold tickets, no matter who
bought them.
He sold tickets.
I saw me.
Lady D (26:01):
You should try to get on
Ja Rule's album.
I was like oh he has an album?
Erin Boogie (26:09):
Yeah, he said he
got a hundred million dollar
record deal.
That no one believes either.
Jay Elle Music (26:13):
Oh, I mean I
don't know how record deals work
these days, but I mean, younever know, he is Ja Rule.
Lady D (26:20):
Would you ever sign one,
or you want to stay indie
forever?
Jay Elle Music (26:25):
If the right
deal comes along and it makes
sense, I would definitely sign.
But I'm looking more at, butI'm looking more to do like a
partnership, more than justsigning to a label.
But again, it all depends onthe deal, how it's structured.
You know what we're talkingabout, so you know I'm never the
(26:46):
one to be like oh, I woulddefinitely.
But you know it all depends onwhat is built on.
Erin Boogie (26:53):
And so what do we
got coming next from JayElle?
Jay Elle Music (26:56):
Ooh.
So, like I said, I'm performingin New York for New York
Fashion Week.
I'm walking and I'm performingon three different nights and,
hopefully, fingers crossed I'mworking on a couple films this
year.
I think I have one that I thinkI pretty much got locked down,
(27:17):
but Fingers crossed on that, Idon't know.
But hopefully again, like Isaid, we're working on some
doing like some small tours, collaborate with somebody else,
a promoter who does the tours, and yeah, just some things.
I'm trying to do some nationalanthems at some games and some
