(00:07):
His name is a really funny guyand this is his podcast in your rise
endy Ridcaster letter. Hey everybody, thanks for tuning in. It's the in
the Right Podcast, episode number seventytwo, first one of twenty twenty four.
(00:29):
Happy New Year to everybody. Ihope it's a good one so far.
It's good so far for me.Twenty twenty three was all right.
I haven't done a podcast in acouple of months. Quick updates. Uh,
didn't do too many shows since mylast podcast. I did do Don't
(00:53):
Tell comedy show, which was kindof fun. I was kind of added
on at the last in it tothat one. I forget the name of
the venue. Uh. I wasalready sold out when I was added to
the show, so it was inthe basement of a barber shop. But
(01:14):
I ended up being a really coolshow. And then the last show I
did last year was that It's likea poetry slash comedy open mic. I
got a headline the that one,and that was all right, a little
better than I expected it is goingto be. And I also got I
(01:36):
got to officiate my cousin Devon's weddingup in Iowa in December. That was
a lot of fun. I hadnever officiated a wedding before. That was
my first time and it went prettywell I thought. Anyway. They had
like really short vows so it didn'ttake up very much time anyway. So
(01:59):
so that was a lot a lotof fun that at a really cool venue
and Fort Dogile and I don't know, it's just a beautiful wedding and reception
was fun. Got to see alot of old friends and some family and
stuff like that. So that wasa lot of a lot of fun.
So yeah, let's start this stand. The podcast is going to be about
(02:21):
comedy specials. So my plan thisyear is to perform a comedy special,
record a comedy special, hopefully atthe same venue that my cousin was married
at. That's my goal. It'slike this really cool old school ballroom and
Buddy Holly did one of his lastshows there is like a second to last
(02:44):
show was there and some people boughtit last year and remodeled it and stuff
and it's pretty cool, pretty cool. So yeah, that's my goal is
to record a comedy special this year. I am doing a lot of shows.
I got a lot of shows booksright now. Run down my tour
(03:05):
dates real quick. If you knowanyone in those areas or whatever, send
them to a show. If you'rein the area, go to a show.
Here we go. January fifth andsixth. That'll be at the Funny
Bone in Omaha, Nebraska, mybuddy Tim Gather. That is this weekend,
So if you watch it after thisweekend then don't go to the show.
(03:29):
Then we'll be there. January fourteenth, I'll be at the launch Pad
in Albuquerque for One Liner Madness, which is a really fun show. It's
sixty four comedians battle it out ina one liner contest. January nineteenth and
twentieth, I will be at Kazata'sComedy Club. Steve Michael Kasada is a
(03:52):
buddy of mine. He opened acomedy club. You'll recognize him from Breaking
Bad. He was Agent Gomez. He's got a new comedy club here in
Albuquerque, just outside Albuquerque at theSanta Ana Casino. And I'll be working
with Chris Catan, which is awesome. You'll recognize him from SNL or Night
at the Roxbury or a movie thatme and my sister quote a lot Corky
(04:15):
Romano. So yeah, let's uh, that's gonna be fun. February third,
I'm headlining at the Unhinged Brewery inAlbuquerque. February ninth and tenth,
I'll be at Looney's in Colorado Springsonce again with my buddy Tim Gather the
Saturday night show. We're actually filmingfor Open Bar Comedy, which is my
(04:43):

so we're film and specials for that. I think Gretchen Hess is also filming
that night. Then I'll be inDenver the following week. I got February

(05:26):

I'll be hosting that show. BuddyEddie Stevens will be headlining. That's April
twenty sixth and twenty seventh. Iwill be at the Funnybone in Des Moines,

one. They'll be with my buddyTim at that one again. And then
(05:50):
October twenty one through twenty sixth,I will be in Canada at Calgary,
Alberta, Canada at the Comedy Cave. Never been to Canada. I'm in
the process of getting my passport rightnow, so cal them down. I'll
have it, don't worry. Butyeah, that's exciting. And go to
(06:13):
go to my website funny flutter dotcom. Click on my schedule. All
the tickets should be on there forall those shows. If they're not,
you can call the club or youcan just wait until they're on there.
Do whatever you want. I don'tknow. I don't know what you guys
do, wait till the last minute, whatever, But yeah, those are
(06:35):
There's gonna be a lot of fun. Also trying to trying to line up
that taping in Iowa, and onceI do that, I'm gonna line up
some other shows in Iowa, includingmy hometown Clarion, and then hopefully some
other towns and I'll definitely post thoselots. So yeah, let's get into
(06:59):
my favorite Conny specials from last year. I actually want to cut a few
off the list. I'm trying tonarrow it down to my top twenty and
I'm not going to do them inorder, but I'll do my top five
in order. But it's it washard. I watched a lot of specials
this year. There's a lot ofgood ones. Trying to think of who
(07:24):
is could okay, cause I've gotabout twenty six here right now, So
let's see if I can knock afew off this list. I'll knock that
one off. But I'd like tohear from you guys and hear like what
your favorite specials were on the year. Maybe I missed a few. I
(07:46):
don't know. Man, it's hardto take off the list. Marlon Wayans,
that was a good one. Youknow. You know what, I'll
do top twenty five. I'm notgonna do top twenty. That's too hard,
Okay. So these are the Thesewould be six through twenty and no
(08:09):
order. These are alphabetical. Actually, Ben Roy Hyena, which is on
YouTube. If you haven't seen BenRoy, definitely go check him out.
I gotta work with him a coupleof times before. He's a Denver guy,
real high energy. Chris Rock SelectiveOutrage, which was his live special
(08:35):
on Netflix. I thought that wasa cool, cool special. I thought
it was cool the way he didthat. That was real good. Greg
Warren the Salesman, which I believeis on YouTube. I've worked with Greg
before. Super nice guy, greatspecial. If you haven't seen him,
(08:58):
check that out. Uh. Thisnext one was really a really fun one.
It was Jackie cation that's called lookingBack and she recorded it on the
(09:20):
h on the camera of a car, like you know when you're backing up
and you have the car camera onthere. She recorded it into that.
I thought that was really cool andit's like a I don't know, it's
a cool little special. It's notlike super long. I think it was
(09:41):
like eleven minutes or something like that, but super funny. I'm actually gonna
share a Jackie caation story with youguys. So I got I. Uh.
I used to work at Last ComedyClub in Albuquerque. Here's when it
was open, and there's a okay, There's a comedian named James R.
(10:05):
Zingleman. He calls me one day. James is a super funny comic and
hypnotist, comedy hypnotist, and hecalls me one day and he goes,
I'm reading this book. It's calledHow Not to Suck as an MC.
And he's like, I'm going toread you this and you tell me if
this sounds familiar, Sorry, it'syou, guys. I once worked a
(10:31):
club where the MC is also thefry cook and does telemarketing for the club
during the day. The club anda strip mall a half mile from the
condo condo in quotation apartment the clubhas rented and keeps comics in like dogs
and not good love dogs that youhave to walk to. You have to
walk to in front each night. Is run by people that treat comics like
(10:54):
criminals as soon as they get totown. And they justify this because they
keep booking criminals, so when theyaccidentally don't book a criminal, it's just
in their nature to treat you likea criminal. My professionalism was the only
thing showing. This place has theclass of a toilet. But the MC
is actually funny. That was me. Ah, He's a funny guy that
(11:18):
has to do his set, thenrun back into the kitchen and make mozzarella
sticks and pork toast or somedamn thing, run back out to bring the feature
off, bring the headliner on,then run back and finish his kitchen shift.
One night, he loses track oftime. The feature we'll call him
Frank, goes a couple minutes earlyand is walking off stage and no MC.
(11:41):
He went way short that night.By the way, there's no one
work in the room or anything.I go across the room into this professional
moment of show business. Hey,Frank, the kids not around, bring
me up. So so Frank bringsme up. The show is fine.
The MC comes up to me aftermy set, wiping his hands on a
(12:01):
towel and said, I think Frankgot off early. I was on my
way. I asked him for aride back to the condo. So that
was in the book I'm Not toSuck as an MC, written by Jackie
Cash. That section was that part. So yeah, that's how I had
to do it. Back in theday, when I was working in the
(12:22):
kitchen it laughs. I would startout in the kitchen, start making some
stuff. Then I'd go do myfifteen minute set, go back to a
backed up kitchen, work my assoff for about twenty five minutes, and
then I'd usually close the kitchen halfwaythrough the headliner sets usually. So that's
(12:46):
a fun story. I got towork with Jackie a couple of years ago
in Glendale at Stir Crazy Comedy Club, and it's funny because she actually told
that story on her podcast with Lorikil Martin, and someone actually messaged me
about it and was like, Hey, do you know who she's talking about?
And I was like, Yeah, that's me. So I told Jackie
(13:09):
when I saw her again, becauseI hadn't seen her since. I mean
this happened probably in two thousand andfive, maybe two thousand and six,
probably two thousand and five though,So yeah, that's fun. But yeah,
check out her special Looking Back isreally funny. She's a great comic.
Back to the list, Joe Bartnickkilling in Chicago. He's another guy
(13:33):
that I got to work with backat Laughs years ago. Actually had the
filling for him one time he wasfeaturing and he lost his voice, couldn't
talk, and I was there,so I went on for him. Kelsey
Cook the Hustler. If you haven'tseen her. She's fantastic. I saw
her live in Albuquerque one time openingfor Jim Norton. Super funny. She's
(13:56):
got a new podcast with Chad Daniels. It's great. Kyle Kyle Knaane Shocks
and Struts. Kyle is awesome,so he solid. I got to work
with him once in Albuquerque. MarkMaren from Bleak to Dark was a really
good one. Mark actually grew uphere in Albuquerque, which is pretty cool.
(14:18):
I got to see him it's notone time here and his dad was
at the show. I thought thatwas pretty cool. He told a lot
of cool stories from living here andstuff like that. Next one is Mark
normand Soup to Nuts. He's probablyone of my favorite comics right now.
(14:41):
He's a really good writer. Ilike his writing style a lot. I've
actually had a few people tell methat I remind them of Mark normand but
I started before I even knew whowas, so I'm not still in this
style. So fuck off. MarlonWayans, God loves me. He is
(15:01):
really good. I think that wason HBO Max. If you haven't checked
that one out, please do thisone. I just watched Mike Baldwin number
one top selling best comedy special ever, it's probably one of the best names
for a comedy special. If youdon't know Mike, he's great. He's
a comic from Kansas City. Hedoes a podcast with my buddy Tim Gather
(15:26):
called The Truth Again Podcast. Checkthat out if you haven't seen it or
listened to it. He's also gotone of the funniest shirts to comedy.
Comedians sell t shirts after they showedhim make money, and he's got one
of the best ones. It's justit's got a picture. I think it's
just like one Ninja. There's abunch of leaves and it just says Ninja's
(15:48):
hate crunchy leaves. Super Funny's nextone, I thought this was a really
cool special. Mike Birbiglia The OldMan in the Pool kind of felt like
a one man show instead of likean actual stand up special to me,
but it was really cool. Ilike the the stage is really neat on
(16:08):
there kind of looked like a likea pool like I don't know. Check
it out. It's on Netflix.Next one is Mike Vecchi vecchion. I
can't I worked with the guy andI don't know how to pronounce his name.
I think it's Vecchione, could beVecchyoni, I don't know either way.
He's funny. His specials called TheAttractives. I believe that's on YouTube.
(16:32):
Go check that one out. Thisnext one is definitely on YouTube.
Nathan Nathan lund soups On. He'sanother Denver guy that I like a lot,
known him for years. He filmedthis one in Chicago. It's a
shorter special, like thirty five minutesor so. Super funny. I like
Nathan a lot. Next one isNeil Rubinstein or Stein. I've had him
(16:57):
on the podcast. His specials calledHave Some Dignity. Man. I feel
like Neil's super underrated comic and Ihope he I'll be blows up soon because
he's really good. He's constantly onthe road and working his ass off and
just a good dude. So ifyes, if you haven't seen that,
(17:19):
check it out. Have Some Dignity. It's on YouTube. Next one's Ricky
Gervais Armageddon. I just watched thatone the other day. Just came out
on Christmas Day, I believe onNetflix. I always always a fan of
his stuff. Next one is SarahSilverman Someone You Love, which is on
HBO Max. I think I feellike I haven't. That one came out
(17:42):
a while ago, so I don'tremember it too well, but it's on
my list. I was on afight with Sarah Silverman one time and I
was too scared to say hi,so yay, I'm a dip shit.
Next one Shane Gillis Beautiful Dogs. That was really good. That one almost
(18:03):
made my top five. It wasreally close. That one's on Netflix.
We haven't seen that really good.Next one is another one of my favorite
comics, Todd Berry Domestic Short Hair. I believe that one's on YouTube.
(18:25):
I love Todd Berry. I thinkhe's hilarious. Every one of his albums
is great. I don't know,he just cracks me up. Check that
one out and then this one Ijust watched the other day to Tom Clark
Live from North Hollywood. I've workedwith Tom before. Tom and his wife's
Steph, great people, very funny. Tom's also a Milwaukee Brewers fan,
(18:51):
which is great. I actually wentto a Brewers spring training game with him
and his wife against the Cubs whenwe were working in Arizona together a few
years ago. But yeah, hisspecial Live from North Hollywood is on YouTube.
Super funny. I feel bad becausethere's so many other specials that I
watched that were really good this yearthat didn't make the list, and I
(19:17):
don't have all those in front ofme. So those those were I guess
six through twenty five. Yeah, you want to know. My most hated
special that I actually watched the entirething was, I don't even remember what
(19:40):
it was called. Was Andrew SantinoSpecial. For some reason, I just
don't like that dude. I don'tknow why. He's probably a nice guy,
I don't know. I just don'tfind him funny at all, and
watching him on podcast a couple oftimes, he just kind of seems like
an asshole. I also, Iwasn't a big fan of Pete Holmes as
(20:03):
special, and I really liked hisshow Crashing, and I liked his last
special, but this one was justI don't even think I finished the whole
thing, which I don't know.I like Pete, so I was kind
of bummed about that special. MaybeI should have watched the whole thing before
(20:25):
judging it. All right, here'smy top five. You guys ready for
my top five? I want tohear your top five? All right?
Here we go. Number five. This is on Netflix Beth Stelling. If
you didn't want me, then Bethis awesome. She's one of my favorite
comics. Super super funny. I'dlove to see her in person, like
(20:45):
to see her perform live, either'dbe cool. I think she performed here
last year, but I was outof town or something like that. I
had to miss. Maybe Santa Feshe did the cloud Top Comedy Festival.
Maybe it's two years I don't know. Anyway, check her out really funny.
Number four is an old pal ofmine. Sam Talent has special called
(21:10):
The Toads Morale and that one justcame out a day after Christmas. That
one's on YouTube. Man, it'scool to see Sam having so much success.
I was kind of there when hewas he was he was pretty new
to the scene when I lived inDenver the first time, like back in
two thousand and nine, and uh, just watching him, you can tell
(21:32):
he he was gonna be something specialand he deserves all the success he's getting.
It's awesome. He was actually thereason I watched Kill Tony the other
day. I don't really like thatshow. Number three another Netflix one,
Ralph Barbosa Cowabunga. Ralph's another dudeI've actually worked with before, just a
(21:55):
few years ago. He just dida short set when I was performing in
Texas at It's like a brewery. When I say the town was called like
justin Texas, there was a smallertown like north of Dallas or north of
Fortworth or something. But he wason the show. Its Me, Me
(22:17):
and him and Jason Russell and TysonPfeiffer. That was the lineup, and
it was an awesome show. AndI feel like Ralph was pretty new at
the time, and he was,but he was still funny, but he
wasn't like as polished as he ashe is now. And and Special is
great. The writing is fantastic. He's blowing up. It's awesome. Number
(22:42):
two is Gary Goldman born on thirdBase. That one is own HBO Max.
That one just came out the otherday too, and I almost missed
it and then I was just flippingthrough HBO Max and so that was on
there. Yeah, holy shit.I love that dude's writing is He's great.
(23:08):
That state abbreviation's joke is still oneof my favorite jokes of all time.
That wasn't on a Special, Butif you haven't seen that, go
look it up and also watch thisspecial and the number one what do you
think it is? Nope, maybeyou gotta write I don't know. The
(23:30):
number one special this year is ChadDaniels Mixed Reviews, which is on YouTube.
Chad's probably one of my top fivecomics, maybe top three, maybe
top two, maybe top one.I don't know. The dude just fucking
rights like crazy. So he filmedtwo specials in the same night. This
(23:51):
was one of them. Just cameout in December, and then he's already
recording a new special in a fewmonths, a couple of months. March
second, on his birthday. Alwaysremember his birthday for some reason, even
though I haven't seen him in fifteenfourteen to sixteen seventeen years. I don't
(24:14):
know, I mean years, It'sbeen a long time. But yeah,
Chad Daniels Mixed Reviews. Check itout. Awesome. Oh my god,
my mouth's getting all dry scratchy.Anyways, that's my that's my list for
(24:34):
the year, my favorites. ButI would like to hear your favorites if
you want to tell me, ormaybe I missed one, tell me one
that's kind of under the radar orsomething. I'd like to watch it.
Yeah, that's all I got plannedfor this episode. It's episode seventy two.
(24:56):
Definitely planning on doing a lot ofthese this year. I know I
always say that, but I'm gonnado it, damn it. And I'll
have more guests and stuff like that. I got a got a lot of
guests lined up, so yeah, there's not much she else. I just
want to thank Jarrett Reddick form Bothingfor Soup for intro music, John Singleton
(25:18):
from Anesthesia for the outro music. And go to Funny Fletcher dot com check
out the shows, all the ticketsaround there. You can sign up for
my newsletter on there. You cansubscribe to my YouTube channel. I'm only
like eight hundred and fifty subscribers awayfrom a thousand, so that's pretty big.
That's a big, big number. So I just need eight hundred and
(25:40):
fifty people. There's definitely not eighthundred and fifty people watching this. So
anyway, thanks for tuning in,everybody, Alma, how funny bone this
weekend with Tim Gaither. Hope tosee you there if you're in the area,
and we'll catch you next week.Hi, everybody, sassible. That s
