buddy? Oh, what's up?Man? Good to see him, man,
good to be seen. Excited tohave you on. I'm excited that
(02:23):
you're back in the comedy scene.Yeah, it's good to be back.
I definitely took I h I tookabout a year off. I just was
a year off. I just wasn'tfeeling it, and I just felt kind
of, I don't know, notshitty, but just not into it.
Yeah, until until Casadas. Theyhad like a I guess you can call
(02:45):
an audition for lack of a betterword, and they had like this,
they had a ton of local people, and then they also had essentially it
was like their holiday party for theirstaff and the soft opening the club.
So once uh I got asked todo that, I started open mics just
to kind of stretch my legs andget them back under me. And then
the show was so much fun.Yeah, it was a full that room.
(03:08):
Yeah, that room is amazing.I was like, oh shit,
I think I kind of like doingthis again. Yes, I yeah,
it's funny because I just performed therea few weeks ago and a buddy of
mine named Brian Jacobs just moved backto town like in June, and he's
been doing stand up since probably likefour oh five or whatever, and uh
(03:30):
so he came to one of myshows at Casada's and he's like, man,
I really want to start doing comedylike more, you know, like
because he does. He was livingin Lubock, Texas for a while,
and he was doing a decent amountof shows there, but you know,
just having like a comedy club likethat, Like he was all excited.
He's like, yeah, I wantto open here sometime. Yeah. Actually
(03:52):
I got to open. I gotto open for Ida Rodriguez this past weekend,
which was Yeah, tell me aboutthe shows, man, how were
they? Oh? That was great? So I got kind of I got
thrown I kind of got thrown offthe first show Friday night because room is
packed, and then Stephen Michael Cassatacomes up and he goes, hey,
man, He's like, I'm justgonna on the show, go out and
say hi, do a couple ofminutes. And was like yeah, yeah,
(04:13):
fuck yeah dude. And it turnsout his entire family was in the
front row, including his like nintyyear old mother. Oh sure, yeah.
So he goes out does this thing, and then I go out and
then I'm doing I'm doing my thing, and then I have like I'm not
raunchy, but I'm I'm a littledirty. So I felt like, well,
because this woman looks like she couldbe my grandma. So I kept
looking at her and apologizing to her, and I like, I turned it
(04:35):
like, I kept doing that andthen as I could, turned it into
a bit just apologizing to her forwhat I was about to say. But
uh, it was fun. Itwas a lot of fun. And then
the headliner was Outa Rodriguez out ofLA and she was fucking phenomenal. She
rocked the house. Pressure. Yeah, and then she brought this guy,
Antoine Young whom I've never heard of, but she brought him and he was
(04:59):
he was so much fun. Hewas such a laid back guy. Cool.
Yeah, he was. It wasa good time, and the rooms
were sold out, like the firstshow Friday, second sought second show Saturday,
and then the second show Friday wasa little light and then the second
show on Saturday was definitely it wasn'tsold out, but it was filled.
Yeah, I yeah, I hada similar experience. We had sold out.
(05:24):
I think both early shows. Fridaywas definitely over one hundred and then
Saturday light show was pretty packed, almost filled. And yeah, the crowds
are amazing, man, Like Ifelt like a rock star all weekend and
just such a cool room. Andyou know, the green room's awesome,
the staff's awesome. Yeah, thefood is great, Like you just can't
(05:47):
ask for, you know, better, the better spot for us comics to
perform. So yeah, I definitelyI definitely felt spoiled for sure. Yeah.
And you're not even you're not relatedto Steven All your name not you're
a little different, not even alittle oh that was going into it.
It was like I got my Igot my dumb opening joke. I was
(06:08):
like, you can say, youcan see his his name is spelled with
the Z, minds with an S. He's known for breaking bad. I'm
known for breaking wind. Yeah, dude, it's like, that's what we're
doing all night. Guys, that'swhat we're doing all night. You don't
like that, I don't know whatto tell you. So, but that's
so cool because well between Cassadas andthe course of Dry Heat, which is
fucking I love that club too.Yeah, and then Hyena's opening up too,
(06:32):
like there's there's just comedy is justopening up, dud. It's gonna
yeah, it's gonna be awesome, man, I mean, and and those
clubs are gonna be so far awayfrom each other where you know, it's
not like huge competition in my opinion, So you know, Cassandas gets a
lot of people from Santa Fe,at least, like when I worked there,
there were a decent amount of peoplethat came down from Santa Fe.
(06:54):
And you know, you'll pull peoplefrom Rio Rancho on the west side.
Yep. So yeah, it's verycool. It's great having comedy on this
side of town, especially being inRio Rancho. Yeah, you know you're
in Rio Rancho, right, ohyeah, yeah that was nice too because
it was, like I was,my parents came to the first show on
(07:15):
Saturday, my parents, my sister, a couple of friends of mine,
my parents came on the Saturday firstshow too. Yeah. Yeah, it
was a hell of an experience.I guess that I felt very spoiled with
how like how good the food wasand not nice the green room was.
They had a little fridge that hada bunch of like sodas and Red Bull.
Yeah yeah, yeah, everybody's supernice over there. The the guy
(07:36):
who runs the place, the manager, I guess. And then what's that
Jake John John Anderson, And Ithink I don't know, I was calling
him Sam. I've got his cardsomewhere. And then I met the director
(07:58):
of marketing as well, John Hewas cool. Yeah, John was super
cool. Yeah yeah. I wastalking about it on my podcast with Oser
Jose and on my solo podcast. But I had to I had to stretch
my time on Friday early show.I actually got there. I listened to
that. I listened to that agood first half of the podcast when you're
(08:20):
talking to him about that and howhe showed up like forty minutes late.
Yeah, that's fucking crazy. Yeah, so I had to do forty minutes
in a feature spot. Well weall know that this means stretch it not
Yeah yeah yeah yeah. Who wasyour opener, Chris o'tero. I don't
(08:43):
remember him. He was y youstand up back in the day and white
hair, right yeah yeah, yeah, okay, yeah yeah, one of
Steven's good buddies. And he wason the After after Party quite a bit.
That was the last time I actuallysaw him was one of the tapings
for the After after Party. SoI hadn't see the dude probably over a
decade. So it was cool tosee him again. Yeah, it was
(09:05):
nice. He's a very funny guy. I know. He used to come
down to Laughs quite a bit,and then he just kind of disappeared from
there. And then so yeah,it was cool to It was a good
show all around. Man, ChrystalTaro. It's kind of funny because like
(09:26):
so like when you hosted, likehow how did they open the show?
So what they told me is likeyou're gonna do you got ten minutes off
the top, so ten minutes immediately. So the way they break it down
is I'm on there from seven toseven to ten features on it. But
did they bring you up though,Like did they have like okay, ye
didn't Chrystal Taro didn't do that.He had He just walked out. He
(09:48):
said, I'll just I'll just startthe show. I'll just walk out there
and start the show. And Iwas like that would suck. But he's
got like a good energy and he'she's you know, uh, he's good
at that. You know, notsaying that you're not or anything, but
I'm saying that I am not.I would definitely love an introduction and you
(10:09):
know, for a little little bitof you know, people, the show's
about to start. You know, yeah, put your phones away and ship
like that. I know you weretalking to you You're talking to Josah about
open mics and laughs. You wereactually the first mic the open mic,
the first mic I ever went to. I didn't participate, but the first
(10:33):
one I saw was back in liketwo thousand and eight, laughs, because
I was working at the Hyatt andbernal Leo, and this guy that was
working there was like, Hey,I'm gonna do an open mic at last,
you go, I need to bringpeople. So we all end up
going and I remember you specifically becauseof your distinct look and take that for
sure. Yeah, yeah, allof that. So that was very cool
(10:56):
back in eight or nine. Musthave in two thousand and eight because laughs
closed. The last show we didthere was December thirty one, two thousand
and eight. Oh, then itwas definitely two thousand and eight. Yeah,
yeah, yeah. So did yourbuddy that you worked with ever do
stand up ever again? After that? He did it periodically, but he
(11:16):
definitely he dropped out within that year. That's when I started. That's when
I started doing it. You're like, I'm better than that long Yeah?
Yeah. Who was it? Thisguy Jim Plumber? I remember Jim.
Yeah, yeah, he did someshows after that, yeah he laughs.
I think I remember running into hima few times. I think he's a
(11:39):
lawyer now, oh no shit, yeah, I remember because I feel like
he took a comedy class at laughswith Tony Visik or maybe. Yeah,
I'm pretty sure it was Jim Iknow who he is, but yeah,
I think he might have taken aclass or two that laughs. But I
(12:03):
yeah, I definitely remember him.He had some funny stuff. Yeah,
yeah, I haven't. I haven'tseen him in probably ten twelve years.
Yeah, we get all just youknow how life. Life just moves on
for sure. So yeah, sohow did you get connected with AJ?
How did it? Did you goto high school with AJ? Yeah?
Yeah, well him and I played. We we met in eighth grade playing
(12:28):
and then we were just friends eversince. And then I remember because the
first open mic I did was atretros that up there on like what was
it? Yeah, like Wyoming andI forty Yeah, and I remember Mike
Boiled, host of that open mic, and that's where we met Brett Hiker.
Okay, but I went. Hewas the only person I told,
so I went. And then twoweeks later he did the same open mic
(12:50):
because it was every two weeks.Yeah, so we're two weeks apart.
Oh cool. Yeah, I haven'thad AJ on the podcast. I need
to get him on here. I'mactually he's open in form me on a
couple of gigs we're doing. Uhoh yeah in the Mountain Gods, right,
yeah, I know, the MountainGods. And then they added on
another casino, Sky City Casino. It's gonna be two nights in a row.
(13:11):
Yeah, I know he's I knowhe's excited about that. Yeah,
it should be fun man. Yeah, it's kind of funny because, uh,
I mean, I don't know ifI should talk about this, but
the guy who booked those shows,he he called me and he didn't like
AJ's tape at all. Yeah,He's like, are you sure about this
(13:33):
guy? And I was like,I was like, yeah, well,
I saw the guy you have featurein there tonight and he's way he's like,
way better than him. So Ialmost said the dude's name out here,
but see, I was like,no, trust me. AJ is
funny, man. He's uh,he kills he does well. Every everywhere
(13:56):
I've gone with him, he's donewell. So yeah, it's just you
know, it's so hard to makea good tape here, you know,
especially before any of the comedy clubswere open. And I'm I guess some
AJ's was probably from like just someshitty gig here in town. So yeah,
more than likely. Yeah, well, I know he was trying to
he was trying to record a setat UH at Turtle Mountain, but that
(14:18):
it was just it was a weirdroom that night. It was just a
weird vibe in the room anyway,mm hmm. Like it wasn't the it
wasn't the most conducive to recording aset. Yeah, And that's another great
thing about Kazatas Club is you know, they have cameras there and they film
your sets and yeah, it's alsoa great place to get a video made,
(14:39):
like if you have your own cameratoo. But you know, because
a lot of clubs, they won'teven look at your tape unless it's filmed
at a legit comedy club. Soif you just send them a clip from
Turtle Mountain, they're not gonna They'renot usually gonna watch it. They're like,
what the fuck is this? Youknow, they said, backyard wrestling
(15:01):
tape? Yeah? Right, haveyou have you done any of the pro
wrestling shows the new ones at UHat the l right Theater, No,
I haven't. I want to checkthose out, dude. It's well,
it's pretty cool, like Honk.Yeah, Hobo Hobo. Hank is the
king of is the King of Albuquerquewrestling really so yeah, he's fantastic.
(15:24):
So do you go to a lotof show? Do you do any wrestling
at all? He used to,right, I used to. Yeah,
I used to do it a lot, but I kind of fell out of
it. But I want to getI really want to get back into it.
There's actually the third Bushwhacker. Oh, I could be the second because
the other one's dead. I forgotabout that. Yeah, it's actually a
(15:45):
really cool show in Ria Rancho onfirst. Yeah, it's called Phase one
Pro Wrestling. Ah man, Igotta show in Santa Fe that night.
Ah ship, Yeah dude, it'suh yeah, it's Saturday. The second
the Sad Yeah, the Oaks Lodge. Yeah, at the Oaks Lodge in
Real Ranch Bar Loop. No shipthere, not too long ago. Yeah,
(16:07):
dude, that would be cool tosee, especially if you because your
nephew you have you have nephews intown, right Oh yeah, Oh dude,
that's the best thing. That's thebest thing to take a little kid
too. Yeah. Oh yeah,I can even tell them what the yell.
Yeah. Yeah, So that's that'sa really cool venture happening. So
(16:30):
there's lots of comedy and lots ofwrestling. That's so cool, man,
Yeah, it's so cool. Like, you know, I travel around a
lot, and I see a lotof cool you know, a lot of
comedians. Not a lot of comedians, but you know a handful of comedians
here, and they are connected withthe local wrestling scene and whatever places I'm
at, Like, you know,McAllen, Texas has like a really cool
(16:51):
like independent wrestling scene, and youknow a lot of the local comics are
involved in stuff stuff like that.So yeah, I think I think the
two worlds combining is pretty cool. You know. Yeah, well they go
hand in hand, oh for sure. Yeah. I mean I feel like
a lot of comics growing up watchedpro wrestling and stuff. So I know,
(17:15):
I because a lot of times whenyou hear, well, you'll have
interviews with wrestlers interviewing pro and wrestlersinterviewing comics and vice versa, and they
always end up saying like, Icould never do what you do. You
know, it's always the yeah betweenthe two of them. Yeah, yeah,
I could never be a wrestler,but I could be like a mean
gene Okreland type of dude or somethingyou'd be you'd be a fun backstage man.
(17:38):
Yeah, that'd be fun, man, I would love or at least
they're writing scripts for it or somethingwould be cool. You know it's just
watched. Oh good. I Iwas watching this documentary about Andre the Giant
recently, and I was telling mycousin that, I was like, you
know, out of all the shittythings that happened to me in my childhood,
like my parents divorce and stuff likethat, the worst thing that ever
(18:00):
happened to me was when Andre theGiant and Hulk Hogan became enemies and they
were showing that clip, but Istarted like when he ripped, when he
rips the shirt, and I waslike, fucking heartbroken. I know what
is going on here? Take myparents, but leave Andre, yeah,
because those are like my two heroes. Man. It was like, I
(18:23):
don't know, it was just weirdafter that. But no, and it
was all scripted. Now it's notas bad but predetermined. Yeah, right,
but if I got really upset aboutthat, hung up. It's still
heartbreaking. Yeah, I did you? Did you see the Iron Claw movie?
(18:44):
No? I didn't know. Inever got around to it. Man.
I went here in Rio Rancho.Actually I went on a Tuesdays it's
cheaper, it's like five bucks, and I had the whole theater to myself.
It was great and so nobody sawme crying and stuff, so that
was nice. Yeah. Yeah,I mean it was one of those movies
that kind of came and went,oh, I need to go see that,
and you go see that. Yeah, I've heard nothing still might be
(19:08):
playing. Maybe I don't know,I haven't checked the schedule, but uh,
yeah, it's such a great moviebecause me and my me and my
brother loved watching the van Erics. My brother was a huge Kerry van Eric
fan. I was a huge Kevinvn Eric fan. And uh yeah I
didn't I didn't realize Carrie uh losthis foot. Yeah. I feel like
(19:30):
I started watching a little bit afterthat happened after he because I don't remember
him beating Rick Flair or anything, but I do remember when he made the
transition to like w w F.Yeah. But yeah, yeah, because
yeah, it seemed like after schoolthey would always show the uh was it
(19:52):
the w c W or something likethat. Yeah, but yeah, Kevin
van Eric and Carrie van Eric werealways on there, and I remember watching
their dad's final match. I thinkit was at Cowboys Stadium, No shit,
yeah, I mean I don't rememberwhat year it was. It might
have been like a replay of itor something, but I do remember watching
(20:14):
the match and I thought that waspretty cool. The first pro wrestling memory
I have is that it was likeit had to be like WWF Superstars,
and I was at my cousin's houseand I remember seeing the Mounty with his
with his baton shocking some fucking workers. Oh yeah, that was the first
memory I had. And then Idon't know how, and then I ended
up finding WWF like raw after that, and then of course, like as
(20:40):
soon as middle school hit that's onthe morning wore its erupted and that's yeah.
How old were you when you firstsaw I must have been like second
grade, okay, so like eight, okay, yeah, I feel like,
yeah, I might have been younger. I think it was because every
Saturday night they had WWF wrestling likethe main event. I think it was
(21:04):
called something like that. And soI'm gonta look up real quick to see
what your WrestleMania three was, becausewe had I'm gonna say eighty eight now
eighty seven. Yeah, so Iwas seven when that happened. So that
was the big andre the Giant HulkHogan match. Yeah, so yeah,
(21:29):
I was a fan before that forsure, And I do remember, Uh,
there was a wrestling events and soI grew up in a town called
Clary and Iowa, and there wasa wrestling event in Eagle Grove, which
was like our rivals, which waslike, you know, five miles away,
and they had a pro wrestling event. My brother got to go and
I didn't get to go. Iwas too young. And the only the
(21:53):
only wrestling there was like a tagteam called the Mod Squad, and that's
the only thing I remember about seeinglike the picture of who was wrestling.
Yeah. But when I was likeseven or eight years old, we were
in this other town, like thebig town is Fort Dodge near us and
that's like where most of my family'sfrom. And uh, we were going
(22:17):
to the store one day and Iwas probably seven maybe eight years old,
and we're walking in uh through theparking lot to the store and Jim the
Anville night Heart walks by us andme and my brother are like, no
fucking way. We're like we're likejust looking at him. We're like,
(22:40):
are you him? And he's likeyeah. We're like yeah, yeah,
yeah. So that was like thatwas my probably my first time ever seeing
a celebrity. Oh my god, you're just reminded me of something. So
this is like had to be AttitudeEra. And at Cotwood Mall, they
(23:03):
advertise the new Wage out Laws. The new Wage out Laws were gonna be
your signing autographs. So I gothere. I'm probably in middle school and
I'm waiting in line with everybody, and somebody comes out and goes, well,
the new Wage out Laws can't makeit, but uh, here's the
honky talk man, and you feltthe air. I believe every really just
got sucked up. Everybody was sodisappointed and a bunch of people laugh but
(23:26):
people like stayed in line because itwas dude. He was pretty popular when
I was a kid, and heeven does he even does some stand up
here and there. I know likehim. Jim Jake the Snake. Actually
I would and saw mcfoley when hewas the launch padot two years ago.
Oh yeah, yeah, I wasawesome. He is the nicest guy in
(23:48):
the world. And he was onthe high school wrestling team with Kevin James,
oh no way. Yeah, yeah, how funny is that? But
yeah, that was an inside jokesand friends of mine, well, Sorr,
I ran out of hot dogs. But here's the Honky honk Man.
I used to love the Honky talkMan. He was pretty he was pretty
(24:10):
famous in w W for a while. Oh yeah, I that's funny.
I ran into, uh, justtotally randomly at Cottonwood Mall. I ran
into Terry Funk one time. Shewas at is that one of those nutrition
places up bike? I forget whatother stores are up there, it's just
above like the record store. Yeahyeah, he was like yeah, I
(24:33):
was just walking by and then thisbig old fucking dude walks out and I'm
like, god, damn, itlooks like Terry Funk. And I was
like Terry Funk and he's like yeah. I was like fuck, yeah,
was he wearing a Terry Funk shirt? Like no, yeah, he had
a wrestling shirt on, though Idon't remember what it was. It was
a white shirt and I don't rememberthough. I was like cool, And
(24:56):
it was before cell phones and shipso I didn't get to take a picture
of him or anything like that. But yeah, you know, he got
a shit for a couple of minutes. Back in twenty sixteen at the at
the Comic Con, I got tohost a panel with Rick Flair No Shit,
which was really cool. Yeah,I mean he's man. He was
so like this is like he wasactually really chill and once he got past
(25:18):
the curtain, then he turned iton. Oh yeah yeah, yeah,
yeah. He was real. Likemy experience the thing was like, I
have nothing but good things to sayabout it because he was so much fun
and he had fun talking to thecrowd and he was talking shit, dude.
Yeah. So yeah, I've gotsome funny Rick Flair stories. Actually
I've never met him, but acomedian buddy of mine named Paul Hooper worked
(25:40):
for him. Paul grew up inCharlotte, and I don't know what he
did for him work wise, Likehe would throw parties and Paul would just
kind of be there helping out andstuff like that. And he was telling
me about this one party where hedecided to like do some drinking on the
side. You know, he's thelate teen year old fucking getting into Shenanigans
(26:03):
and stuff, and he was kindof like hanging out and by himself,
like in this little closet and he'slike doing shots or whatever, and and
he's so he's kind of by himselfand this he comes up and he's like
in this little hallway and Rick Flaircomes out there, and it's like just
those two guys, and Rick's like, what's up, man, And he's
(26:25):
like just drinking a little bit.So they had a couple of shots together
and stuff, and Rick was justkind of, you know, getting away
from the party. It was gettingkind of crazy. But yeah, he
said he he Rick would get fuckingdis wasted and like toss people in the
swimming pool and stuff. Dude,he just reminded me of So I wrestled
(26:48):
in middle school and we took awe took a trip up the Tulsa for
the Tulsa Nationals. Oh yeah,And I guess this is around the same
time his kid was wrestling too,So I guess his kid was in the
finals and fled was there too,So I vaguely remember seeing Ric Flair.
Must have been like nineties and hewas just there, just there watching his
son just wrestling, which was reallyfucking cool. Yeah, he ended wrestling
(27:12):
at a pretty good high school,I think, like one of those big
like private schools and stuff. Yeah, yeah, was he like wooing at
him when he's wrestling. He wassurprisingly calm, and I remember even some
guy passed over like a little padto write his name to get an autograph,
and he just he was very likelike, that's not why, that's
(27:32):
not why. Yeah. Yeah, let's called Ariel Holmes. I don't know
if you remember him, you probablyOh yeah, but the best Paul Harvey
joke in the world. Oh god, the best. Uh that's one of
my top five favorite drugs of alltime. Uh. I just talked to
earlier yesterday. But his so hisdad grew up in Minneapolis, Uh,
(27:52):
not too far from Rick Flair.Like Ariel's uncle used to play football with
Rick Flair, and I guess hewould just fucking annihilate people. Like,
dude, you see old pictures ofFlair, he's gigantic. Yeah, oh
yeah, yeah. I watched adocumentary about him, and yeah, he
was huge. I can't imagine justplaying like some backyard football with that.
(28:15):
Dude. I see some silvered hairedbaboon knock you down. Yeah, you
come home, you're all bloodied upand bruise. Who did this to you?
The nature boy? Wait what Isee you're going to Calgary or bird
of Canada, which is the homeof the Hart family. Yeah, dude,
(28:37):
cool, that is cool. I'venever been to Canada. I just
got my passport the other day,so I'm pumped. Man. I don't
know if they have a museum forthem or whatever, but I'm gonna email
every single person last named hert andCalgary and invite him to my show.
I know Brett Hard. He hasa restaurant out there now, like a
barn rilling. Yeah. Oh man, I will have to check that out
(28:59):
for sure. Yeah. Calgary isa big city and I don't know exactly
where I'm gonna be and what partof town, but yeah, I'm gonna
look that up. I'm excited.I think there's some other famous wrestlers from
there too. Oh yeah, Icould tell you off the top of my
head, like, yes, yeah, that's the movie. Well's that I
said, Yes, yeah, yesthey are. But yeah, definitely the
(29:22):
hearts of the other ones that jumpto mine. Yeah, Rowdy Piper is
from Canada somewhere, I think,oh originally like Ontario, I think.
Okay, Yeah, he did somestand up too, Yeah, dude,
I saw him and I saw himin Denver, no ship, how many
works? Right? Yeah? Andhe was the nicest guy in the world.
(29:45):
And do you remember you remember JamesMorril? Right? Oh? Yeah?
Do you remember his friend Vince?Yep. So we're we're sitting there
because he's doing a little meat greedafter the show and we're talking and Vince
asks him about his jacket and thenPiper gets excited. He takes off his
and he puts it on Vince justto try it on, like he was
just Yeah, I just remember, like I was genuinely sad when he died
(30:07):
because he was such a nice guyand you could just feel it in his
spirit, you know. Yeah.I watched a documentary about him and like
you know, shows him with hisfamily and stuff like that, and it's
cool seeing that side of you know, wrestlers and other entertainers that you don't
get a scene normally. Yeah, and yeah, definitely made me made me
(30:27):
more sad that he was dead. But yeah, yeah, he was one
of my favorites growing up too.He was just one of those dudes,
just a likable dude, you know, well, dud. I remember it
was like, you know those latenights you have as a kid when you're
just going through channels on TV.Uh huh, So I must have come
across T and T and it wasthey live and it's that scene when he's
(30:49):
in the or it's the scene whenhe's in the grocery store and he goes,
look at you like you're putting onperfume. That's like putting perfume on
a pig. And he's just startsHe's insulting every in the convenience store.
Yeah, that was. That wasbefore I knew who he was, and
like I found immediately and then Iended up watching wrestling and finding him how
cool? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was the opposite. I didn't
(31:11):
see that movie for years. Ididn't even know it was a thing until
I think my brother had like aposter or something or a magnet of it,
and I was like, what isthat? And yeah, great movie.
Yeah yeah, a lot of thosewrestlers end up being like pretty decent
actors. Some of them pretty shitty, but yeah, yeah it was cool.
(31:36):
So yeah, our movie theater thatwe had in a small town that
I lived in. Uh, thesetwo also rent videos, So me and
my brother almost every weekend would rentwrestle Mania's and just watch the ship out
of them, So I think itwas WrestleMania three was the one with Hogan
(31:56):
and Andre the Giant, and thenthere is one that had a tournament one
year, and then you know theyalways had Royal Rumbles and stuff like that.
Yeah, oh dude, Royal Rumblesstill the best event of the year.
Yeah. They just had one recently, didn't they. Yeah, yeah,
it was last weekend. Yeah.Do you still follow it or no?
On and off? Yeah, Idon't know if. Actually Russell Meinia
is building up to be pretty fuckingcool this year. Oh really, Yeah,
(32:21):
the Rock just came back and madea huge splash, and everybody's pissed
because he's like they've been building upHave you heard of Cody Rhodes. Yeah,
so they've been building him up tobe like he's like this amazing superstar.
He's he's like the most popular,he's one of the most like he's
the most popular babyface in wresting rightnow. And then so he's building up
the story for him and Roman reignsand he's gonna finish the story that he's
(32:44):
gonna win the title that his daddynever won, and they're building up this
huge thing and all of a suddenthe Rock comes back in. He's like,
no, I'm gonna do it.I'm gonna I'm gonna main event.
Sorry, man, just down.So there's a lot of interesting things happening
in Russell right now. That's socrazy, man, Like, yeah,
watching the Iron Claw was really coolbecause you get to see the behind the
scenes type of stuff that you normallywouldn't see too, you know, like
(33:07):
like how important actually winning these titlesare and stuff like that, you know,
especially yeah for sure, Like yeah, because when Carrie beat Rick Flair,
you know, like that was hugeand you know, like I said,
I didn't see that match or anything, and like but I remember,
(33:30):
you know, watching Rick Flair numeroustimes. And my grandpa used to even
get those wrestling magazines every month orevery week or whatever monthly. But those
are always so cool because they hadlike cool pictures and there's always a picture
of Rick Flair just covered blood andoh yeah, so cool. And they
(33:52):
always had like the rankings, soyou always knew who was like kind of
you know, fighting for the titleand stuff like that, you know,
and it had called it was likew w F plus saw these other ones
that some of the stuff that wasn'teven on TV, so you're like,
whoa, who's this guy? Youknow? Yeah? Cool? Reading about
that. I remember seeing one ofthose magazines and putting it together. It's
(34:13):
like, holy shit, I feellike a detective mankind. It is Cactus
Jack. Oh my god. Andlike I remember just like putting it together
as a kid, was like, that's whoa, that was your a finkel
Azeinhorn. Yeah, yeah, saidthat didn't shower afterwards? Dude, did
(34:35):
you have your did you have yourworld rocked? When they when they premiered
uh, Secrets of Pro Wrestling onNBC. I don't think I ever saw
that. Dude. Well, didyou ever see the like Magicians Secrets revealed?
Oh? Yeah, very so.So it's pretty much it was that.
But with pro wrestling, so havethey They had all these they had
all these guys in like wrestling gimmicksand going over the trades of secrets of
(34:58):
pro wrestlers. Really what year didthat come out? I want to say
it was like ninety seven ninety eight, because I remember my friends and I
would do like backyard wrestling like youdo when your kids, and we would
watch that on repeat to learn someof the secrets. Oh, how funny,
and so we took all like theygave us all the secrets how not
to hurt each to, how tohurt each other less. Yeah, but
(35:21):
we still did it, like westill were still fighting in a park like
in real Rancho. That's just alittle like a tiny bit safer. Yeah.
I think i'd probably stopped watching bythen. I think I kind of
stopped when I was around sixteen.I moved here when I was like seventeen,
(35:42):
and uh I yeah, so Ikind of stopped watching it like all
the time. I feel like becausehul Cogan was my hero, you know,
saying once he went to the darkside, I was like, man,
what the fuck? You know,I don't believe in anything anymore.
Yeah, it was tough. It'stough to deal with, like why would
(36:02):
they fuck with us like that?Well, first him and Andre break up
and then he turns to the darkside. Yeah, I mean that's I
should probably see a therapist about this. I didn't realize how much ho co
get fucked with my life. Maybejust maybe don't look past WCW. Yeah,
(36:23):
you just reminded me of something else. So this is probably two thousand
and nine ish, and went outto La to visit a friend and we
went to a taeping whole COVID CelebrityChampionship wrestling. Oh yeah, oh dude,
it was so much fun. Wewere both drunk, just yelling shit.
And and then do you know BradWilliams, the comic. Yeah,
(36:43):
yeah, yeah, yeah, hewas the warm up guy and I was
yelling at when he was doing thewarm with the crowd. I was yelling
at him. He's like he wantedto bring volunteers into the ring. I
was like, I'll do a moonSalt half drunk. He's like, we're
not going to do that. No, no, no, no, you
stay sitting down. It was somuch fucking fun. That's awesome, man.
Yeah. Hulk Cogan actually had acartoon when I was younger, when
(37:07):
WWF was really, you know, starting to get big. It was like
Hulk Hogan's Rock and Wrestling or somethinglike that. Yeah, it's fucking great.
It's so good. I still rememberone of the jokes from one of
the cartoons. They had the IronChic and his buddy Nikolai Volkoff and they're
(37:30):
watching a car or something like that, and Iron chikes like, use your
head, dummy, So he startswatching the car with his head, Like,
god, damn, that's clever writing. Take note, dude. And
even like pro wrestling in passing, like even because you're a former fan,
(37:51):
watching will Rumble and WrestleMania the twoevents that you just should watch, you
know, Yeah, because I knowWrusselemania is like in the beginning of April,
and that's going to be a hugeone. So even as a casual
fans the fortieth anniversary, if youhave an opportunity, oh cool, yeah,
yeah, I might have to tunein. Man, you know,
even if it's ridiculous, it's uh, I kind of want to go back
(38:15):
and watch some of those old onesand see if I remember some of the
matches. Yeah, you know, because I watch a lot of documentaries.
What's that it's all on Peacock too. Oh really, I am Peacock.
I'll have to check it out tonight. Yeah. I've been watching a
lot of documentaries about wrestlers and stuff, and I just watched one about Macho
Man and uh it's kind of cool. He uh so he played baseball also,
(38:40):
Yeah, so it's kind of coolbecause like my friend's dad played baseball
and he was in the same organizationas Macho Man. They were both with
the Reds, and he just missedplaying with him by like a year,
like all these people that are runningperipheral to like progress legends. Yeah,
(39:00):
isn't that cool? Yeah, that'sreally he was like a year. If
he was like a year younger orolder, I don't remember, he would
have been on the same team asthe Macho Man. That's so fucking cool.
Yeah. Yeah, have you everdo you know who Dan Soder is?
Comedian? Oh? I love DanSoder his matro man impressions. I
(39:20):
was just gonna say that, sogoddamn funny and he's funny. Yeah,
Dan's the best man. He usedto come to laughs. He came to
laughs I think in two thousand andseven when he was first starting out,
and you could you could just tell. I was like, Oh, this
guy's fucking got it and he's funny, has a great voice and everything.
Super cool guy too, So that'scool like watching him succeed. I haven't
(39:45):
seen him since then, probably twothousand and seven, two thousand and eight
or whatever, but yeah, Iremember hearing his name pop up on h
I think he's on Opie and Anthonyone time or something. I was like,
I wonder that's the same dance Sodaused to come to laughs, Yeah,
popped it on you hear the voiceyou know? Oh yeah that's him
(40:07):
any impression. Yeah, so that'scool seeing him do well out there.
Seems like he's really kicking ass andstuff. So uh yeah, who are
some of your favorite comics, Joe? Do you watch a lot of comedy
now or it's I follow more podcaststhan I do comedy, which is okay,
like I don't watch I don't watcha lot of stand up, but
(40:30):
I mean I love Dan Soda.My favorite podcast right now other than this
one is Are You Garbage? It'sand Kevin Ryer. Yeah, just so
good. And those guys are sofucking funny. They're so fast. Their
(40:50):
producer will chime in and he's he'sfunny too, like he he knows his
he knows his bounds, like heknows when to chime in and when to
back off. Cool like that. And then Fantasy Everything with Ian Carmel,
David Bori, and Sean Jordan. It's probably my secondary I know David Bori,
Oh yeah, well because he's aColorado guy, right, yeah,
he grew up with Sam Tallent. They went to high school together. Yeah,
(41:13):
yeah, so yeah. And thenspeaking of Sam Talent, it's cool
to see him popping out. He'sbeen popping up on everything lately. Yeah,
dude, he's all over. Whenhis when his book came out,
he got so many messages because myname's in it. Oh no ship.
One of the characters is named KurtFletcher. Yeah, no one. I
(41:35):
don't know how many messages I gotfrom that. Everyone's like, hey,
have you seen this? Yeah, lots of messages. No bookings, yep,
but no. I just cool seeingStam blow up like that. He
deserves it. He was kind oflike an open micro when I first moved
to Denver in two thousand and nine. So it's cool to see, you
(42:00):
know, because that was that wasyears ago. Man, you could just
he was one of those guys youcould tell too, like this guy's fucking
he's got something, you know.Yeah, And I was actually I was
actually at the show one time.My old roommate Jake Sharon was headlining the
show at this little burrito restaurant downnear Denver University or University of Denver or
(42:20):
whatever. It was a terrible setupfor a comedy show. Nobody's sitting there
watching. There's just a bunch ofpeople coming in to get burritos. So
they're standing in line, and that'swhere the line, like where they're performing,
that's where the line's at, rightin front of you. And so
Sam just did improv the entire time. He didn't do any jokes, improvised
(42:44):
his entire set and just fucking annihilateddude. And I had never seen anything
like that, Like it was oneof the best. I had seen other
comics do awesome sets like that, like Scottie Goff improvising, but I'd never
seen Sam do that, and itwas like one of one of the definitely
one of the top ten sets I'veever seen in my life. Probably.
Yeah, he just did so well. And just after that he just kind
(43:08):
of that was kind of his style. You know, did you do you
ever perform Do you remember Genevieve Mulleror Genevieve Muller? Yeah? Did you
ever perform at her house? Oh? Yeah. So one of my favorite
things that I've ever seen is itwas like a comedian's power hour and Sam
was there and have you heard hiswidow's peak joke? Oh? Yeah,
(43:28):
The way he told her because there'sthere's the there's a petition between the kitchen
and the living room, so hewas able to the way he like put
his put his hands on the sideand you see his fingers and he would
pop out. It's one of myfavorite things I've ever seen, and I
just I think about that on aregular basis. And then he did he
did that at a show at oh, what's it called, the place with
(43:52):
the no roof? What it usedto be called inside out. It's inside
out a stereo barn, that iswhat it was called at the time.
Well, okay, okay, hedid the same thing because there's a there's
a door off to the side andhe went over there. That's still I
(44:12):
think about that. It just itjust gives me so much joy. Yeah,
the look on his face is great. My husband dying probably my my
second favorite memory. Do you rememberNate Lund or Ethan Lund? Yeah,
So we were doing I think itwas Comedian's Power Hour, and we were
everybody was fucking drunk and him andI were like two drunken sailors singing wrestling
(44:37):
theme songs. Oh, it wasso much fun. Looks like he could
be a wrestler. Yeah, Well, when you're because Nick Gossard is still
running his licha libre laughs. Therewas one show where him and Sam actually
got in the ring and fought eachother. It was horrible, like they
were gods within two minutes and likeSam's bellies hanging out and Nate has got
(45:00):
a shirt off and he's laying downand they can't run the ropes for ship.
It was fantastic. Yeah, Iguess I forgot about the athletic aspect
of it. But looks wise, yeah, Sam, Sam has a good
look for a wrestler too, orlike a wrestling like a wrestler's manager or
(45:23):
something. An incredible manager. Ohmy god, I would pay to see
that. I'll definitely pay to seethat. Oh yeah, that would be
amazing. Uh, that's cool thatyou watch a lot of podcasts. I've
been watching a lot more too,I've been I've actually been watching Howie Mandel
has a podcast with his daughter.Yeah, that one's kind of cool.
(45:45):
They did a live one today thatI was watching that I passed out,
so I had to get up earlytoday, so I took a little nap.
What are some other ones I like? Chad Daniels has started one with
his girlfriend. That one's pretty fun. I just listened to their first two
episodes. Check. Then their chemistry, well, of course, because they're
together. Yeah, but their comedicchemistry is fantastic. And he's just so
(46:08):
fucking funny. Dude, he's myfavorite comic right now. Uh so,
did you watch this YouTube special inDecember? No, but I've heard this
fucking asshole records two specials in thesame night. Yeah, two totally different
(46:30):
specials. One of them People isgoing to be on Netflix, and he
recorded it. This was December oftwo thousand and twenty two. He recorded
this. He's recording another special Marchsecond of this year. Good dude,
they're making all of us look lazyas shit. Well, he did well
(46:51):
because he filmed. He filmed bothspecials in one night, two separate shows,
one shot. It's all just inthere. That's yeah, crazy,
it's amazing. Actually, yeah,I talked to him. I talked to
him a little bit today. Actually, yeah, I still keep in touch
with him because I don't know.I had such a good time working with
(47:12):
him, But it was it waslike fifteen years ago. I hadn't seen
him in fifteen years, but heused to come to laughs and so he
hung out at Laughs, and thenI got to work with him two weeks
in a row in Oklahoma City andWichita, and like it was like two
of the funnest weeks I've ever hadin my life. We had such a
good time, like just fucking aroundat the condo and stuff, and it
(47:34):
was so funny because one night wewere at the condo and I was eating
the bacon eater and he goes, what are you eating? He's like,
oh, it was a bacon eater, and he goes, can I try
it? I was like sure,So I handled the burger and he just
eats the entire thing and he's like, man, that's fucking good. Oh,
(47:54):
I said there, like so mad, but so no, yeah,
that's how I was like, Ican't really be pissed because that's pretty goddamn
funny. Well, I'd be annoyed, yeah, more than anything. But
no, he goes, he goes, uh, he said, where'd you
get that from? Was it Wendy's. He's like, all right, let's
go. So he drove me back. He drove me down to Wendy's and
(48:14):
bought me another one about himself.One. Oh man, dude, I
miss do you remember do you everdo that show in like Winslow or was
it Winslow Arizona that I miss?Yeah, I'm Scotti Goff used to run
that. Yeah, that show.I had so much fun there, just
(48:36):
because there was one night where itwas like me, John Kuwaar, Drew
Wayne, and I think one otherperson. We all just and James Morrow.
We all ended up going out therebecause I think one or two of
us was booked and then I guessthe headliner are canceled, so and there's
to be this four person show betweenall of us. It was so much
fucking fun. And then there wasone night where I was there working with
(48:57):
Chris Shaw. Oh yeah, yeah, dude. The one thing I know
about Chris is that he'll look atyou like I'll raisy down there, and
he starts running down the hallway andthen you try to catch him. The
sprints out of nowhere, and itmakes you want to run too, which
is a terrible idea when you looklike me. But yeah, yeah,
I met Chris back in two thousandand two. I've known him forever.
(49:19):
Yeah. I like that room.I haven't been there in a couple of
years, but it's so funny becauselike, I always struggled when I featured
there, but I did really wellwhen I headlined, okay, and so
the first time I ever headlined there, I didn't know I was headlining.
So I was doing Laughs and Tucsonwhen Scotty booked it, and uh Arnault
(49:45):
Scotty might have sold it at thattime. Either way, I was with
Ariel. Ariel was hosting that weekand I was featuring, and uh so
I was supposed to be featuring thecasino, and you know, I told
Ariel he can go with me andjust crashing my room or whatever and I'll
try and get on my guest spot, and uh so called I called Scotti
(50:06):
on the way up there. Iwas like, hey, man, just
letting you know. We're on ourway to the casino and you know,
I'll be there whatever time. Andthen I go, uh, I was
like, hey, who's headlining tonight? And he goes, you are,
and I was like, oh,I was like who's featuring? He goes,
(50:27):
who do you have with you?And I was like Ariel. He's
like, Ariel's featuring and I waslike, oh, okay. And then
so I got off the phone withhim and I was like, Ariel how
much time do you have? He'slike why. I was like, you're
featuring tonight. He's like, ohuh, fifteen barely, you know,
(50:52):
And I was like okay. Andit's a little bit of a shorter show
because it's a casino, so Ikind of forgot about that when you know,
I started freaking out a little bitat first, because I'm like,
fuck, Feely does fifteen. Igotta pull an hour and a half or
an hour and fifteen. So we'rekind of freaking out about it a little
bit, and then we're getting closeto the town and stuff, and I
(51:14):
was like, you know what, dude, just go up and have fun
fell as much time as you can. Whatever you don't fill, I'll do.
You know, I'll do some crowdwork if I have to. And
then I, you know, whenwe get down there and talk to the
guy BJ, he's still there runningthe room. It's awesome, he's been
there so long. But yeah,he's like, yeah, it's just a
(51:35):
seventy five minute show. So Iwas like, oh, I could do
that, that's no problem. SoAriel ended up doing I think twenty seven
minutes and I did like fifty five. So I ended up being like a
really good show. Ariel had alot of fun doing it, and the
Paul Harvey joke killed with that crowd. So I still I love I.
(51:59):
Actually I paid him one time.He was performing at the end of the
Mountain Gods and it's funny. Soin the hotel room they have robes,
and I told him. I waslike, I'll give you twenty bucks if
you perform in the robe, andyou gotta you gotta prove it because I
wasn't with him. He was likefeaturing for somebody. So he calls me
(52:20):
that night He's like, I didit, dude, And I was like,
did you failm it. He's likeyep. So I was like all
right. So he he comes bymy house the next day and he's got
the recording like he did the entireset in the robe. How is Ariel
doing? He's doing good man.He wants to start doing some comedy again.
(52:42):
But he's got like a little kid. Now she's fucking cool. Yeah,
so yeah, oh she looks justlike him too. Man. It's
funny, and you look at him, You're like, oh, that is
your child, sir. Yeah,absolutely, I haven't. I haven't gotten
to meet her yet, but I'llbe up in Santa Fe in a couple
of weeks, so hopefully i'll getto But yeah, he seems like he's
(53:04):
doing good, you know, prettyhappy for him. Yeah, he's got
a cool family. I like hisdad and his mom a lot. They're
both really cool people, and youknow, they've always been really cool.
He come to a lot of comedyshows, like his dad comes to a
lot of my comedy shows. Evenif Aurial's not on the show. I
always thought that was cool. Nice, yeah, not bad. On's your
(53:32):
next show, buddy. I'm doingTurtle on the seventeenth, I think,
nice, twenty fourth. I can'tremember twenty fourth because it's the third Saturday
of the month. Okay, yeah. And then also then I'm doing brew
Lab in March, March seventh.Yes, yes, I'm on that show,
(53:54):
dude. Oh right on, yeahcool? Oh yeahs shit, but
we'll see. Oh man, Ijust realized I spelled Rio Rancho wrong.
Look at that Rio Ranco. Seethat March seven Rio Ranco. Idiot,
But that's the show we're on inRio Ranco, apparently at the Root Lab.
(54:17):
Uh man, that's cool. Yeah, I'm excited that you're back in
the scene. Dude. I'm excitedto see you again. We've got a
lot of cool times on the road. I was thinking about, Uh,
we did Loonies in Colorado Springs togetherwith Sean Kent. Yeah. I remember
(54:37):
we're having lunch and he was justtrashing on wrestling the whole time. And
then we're just sitting there and thenyou were he does wrestling too. I
didn't know that. Didn't you seenanything. He still has one of my
favorite lines I've ever seen too.He was performing at laughs. I'm sure
(54:58):
I've told you this a million times. But so he goes up. It's
Wednesday night. He's headlining. Theopener is Jabron from Olpaso. The magician
the feature act was Danny Keaton, and uh, he got the first thing
he says when he goes out there. He goes He's like, oh great,
(55:21):
they got me working with a magicianand a Mexican. My ship's gonna
disappear all week. That's fucking great. So funny, dude. I still
think about that line that Scotti Golftold some guy. Nice speech. Maurice.
(55:45):
Maurice lives here in Albuquerque. Now. I don't know if he does
much comedy anymore, but yeah,he lives here in town. Oh,
it's a fun nice speech. Ithink about that periodically. Yeah, They're
just random things that will pop inmy head. It. Scotty's got some
of the best improvised lines I've everseen, too. I always tell people
about when he was he was doingsome crowd work with these two guys in
(56:08):
the front row and they both hadthe same first name, and one of
them and they both had similar jobs, and one of them was like in
his forties and one was in histwenties. He goes, oh my god,
this is you from the future. He's here to give you the sports
almenak. Does he still perform?Isn't he do? Like cruises now?
(56:28):
He does a lot of cruise ships. Yeah. Oh that's fucking Oh he's
perfect for cruises, oh I know, yeah, yeah, and he loves
it, man. He he doesa bunch of cruises to Yeah. I
ran into Scotty's wife, Joy atthe airport not too long ago, and
she was she was like, Ithink I was going to Tucson maybe,
but yeah, she said that he'sloving it and she gets to go with
(56:51):
him sometimes and stuff, so it'sawesome. Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah,
Scotty's awesome. I miss I missseeing him around. He's like one
of those dude like, uh,he was always one of those guys where
like if you're struggling with a joke, like you know it's funny, but
you just can't get the wording right, you can just take it to Scottie,
(57:12):
you know, and he would hewould like figure it out like in
five minutes, you know what Imean. Like I had a buddy of
mine that was working laughs in Tucsonwith me years ago, and he was
kind of struggling with a joke andI was like, talk to Scotty about
it. I bet he'd help you. And uh, sure enough, Like
he went and told him the premiseand the idea of it, you know.
And and then we went and satback in the green room area and
(57:37):
Scotty comes back there and he's gotit all figured out and he's like,
oh, yeah, I do itlike this, and he tells him how
to do it and that's perfect.I was like, man, that's awesome.
But one of my worst shows Iever had was with Scotti and it
was at the casino Pinetop Casino.Oh yeah, dude. It was rough,
(57:57):
Like the crowd was laughing at nothingfor me. And this is like
the first time scott he had everseen me feature and because he had bumped
me up to feature at laughs, and I still hadn't done that date yet.
So like the whole time, I'mbombing him, thinking like, man,
Scotty's watching me right now, there'sno fucking way he's gonna have me
feature it laughs after this bullshit, you know, And then he goes up
(58:21):
and he's struggling. They're not laughingat anything like any of his material.
Then he starts doing some crowd workand that gets some laughs. Then he
goes back in the material nothing, crowd work gets laughs, and he he
improvised. I don't know if youremember his joke about like masturbating, like
(58:45):
comparing it like when you're older asopposed to when you're younger. But he's
like, uh, you know, when you're younger, you know, you
just fucking just jerk off wherever you'reat, and it's like it's a little
different when you get older. Youknow, you gotta like finesse it a
little bit. And he starts singingAmerican Pie, so he starts drinking off.
(59:07):
He's like a long long time agoand he sings the entire verse.
He sings the entire first verse, and then he's like switching hands and stuff
and then doing this and this, and then he gets the part where he's
like and something touched me deep inside, and he's like, oh, so
(59:30):
funny, and like he did itlike he improvised it, like how how
he has it in his act nowits like word for word. It is
so funny. But then he didbuck me to feature it laughs again,
so or after that, so Iwas pretty happy about that. But yeah,
(59:52):
just yeah, his improvation improv youknow what I mean. I was
about to try to say that provisationalskills. I once saw him doing an
entire forty five minutes said about RonBell. He was that laughs and he
was hammered, And I just wasn'the allegedly a cokehead too? Oh,
(01:00:16):
I'm sure he was. He usedto ask the strippers to pee on him
at chapter two. Yeah, ohmy god, where was chapter two?
Was it was your billiard palace, wasn't it? Chapter two was like on
(01:00:37):
Wyoming and Montgomery area. Yeah,oh my god. That's so. I
went there one time after a superBowl and there's only like eight people there
that's pretty cool. Yeah, theA team wasn't there that night, Yeah,
the second or maybe it was.I'd never been to chapter two.
